Review: 'Unhinged' Is No Reason to Return to a Movie Theater

"Unhinged our first actual movies in a movie theater movie A CZ. They're making a big point of that. Ah, lot of theaters that weren't open already are opening this weekend. And this is the first thing out of the out of the gate. And it is Russell Crowe being crazy. Yeah, he plays he plays the guy who has In the very versed in the movie killed people, eyes and hands. He's on his way. But then he then he's driving a pickup truck. And some woman who's having a bad day hung her horn because he's ah Blocking traffic and he decides to make it his mission to ruin this woman's life in every possible way on and and that's your movie. Yeah, it's trying to be trying to be some sort of message about road rage, and you never know another person's problems and all this very, very much in line. If you remember the movie falling down with Michael Douglas is trying it's trying to be that, But if you can't you can't Make the case because because this guy is such a psycho and no outside the you know you can't you can't get the Hey, that could be me on about you know, it could be anyway. Well, it's it's two stars Two stars. Alright on definitely not worth definitely not work, Matt.

Getting Ready for the 2020 Emmys

"The Television Academy has just unveiled the nominees for this year's edition of the Emmy Woods Nichols Fernando Augusta per checker and colossal rebelo went through the list and brought us the highlights. Let's have a listen. Pelada. Lovely to have you here. Let's talk about the AMI's but first of all, I mean, you have quite an experience with the amas right while I was very lucky last year while working out of our Los Angeles Bureau to attend the ceremony last for the seventy first. Edition of the Emmy Awards it is amazing. It really is a celebration of all things television not only of course, you're able to see the ceremony yourself and how it all unfolds that the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles, you get to sit right next to some of your favorite stars as they celebrate you know a year worth of work you get to watch as some of them lose some of them when at last year was quite. Special because it was of course, the last year that game of thrones was nominated the end of the saga of game of thrones, which was, of course, a really big deal and one thing that I really liked about that was also how they marked the series that were coming to an end last year by bringing all the cast in the production team that was attending the ceremony on stage and kind of acknowledging any TV show that's on. Air for. A few years it is a bit sad one. You know the last time modern family was also the last. So it yeah, it is. It is quite an experience. I mean we are still a few months to go until this year's edition. Hopefully, we'll be able to have it in person by then by September the television academy still hasn't exactly unveiled the plans for that. But yeah, it just feels as much as it is A. Celebration of television it feels very different to watch it in person than on. TV. Sets and if he's going to be a special year because I mean we've been watching lots of television during lockdown effing and one of the things don't you grieve me. Colada that I like about the Emmys they are. You know what they are actually fairly diverse compared to the film awards and that just shows TV can be actually quite progressive away. Absolutely I think. The nominations this year as well. Reflects that diversity is well and yeah it does show how TV has been able to catch up with only momentum that has been happening in Hollywood about asking for change when it comes to diversity. But even if you look at the shows that are nominated or even just a shows that we're watching now they are reflection of different stories that are a reflection of different themes it's not as standard I would. Say, for example, with the Oscars and I think that's what makes it quite an interesting and exciting. Well, let's talk about some of the favorites I did like sheets Greek being nominated for comedy series of things surprise it started as a very little Canadian series but then apparently people saying that my win actually because the critics love it oh, it is a fantastic show I definitely has been one of the ones I've been watching this year and I was very happy to see it getting nominated for the outstanding Comedy Series Award another one on that category that it was really happy to see their it's the kaminsky methods. This is a Netflix show and yes, it is very lovely with Michael. Douglas starring in it and it is very funny as well and it was so nice to see you know it. They're in the category as well and I just I was very happy I. Think. As we were saying the nominations this year do justice to the TV. We've been watching I mean drama succession I know we're both big fans and you know Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong both be nominated for best actor in a drama series very well deserved extremely well deserved and it is, of course, we're talking here about a big categories. As if you go down the list, there are more awards being given to all the shows we've been mentioning. Not Awards, nominations I mean. But yes, I was very, very happy to see succession I think personally, it has been one of my favorite shows over the last few years I can't remember being dad excited about a show in succession was already nominated for Fiore's last year. I. Know that Nicholas Brutal do who composed the sound score for at won an emmy last year. For. For the score, he composed for succession that would be nice to see it how it's catching momentum and that fans quite disappointed that due to coronavirus sat filming restrictions. The third series did not come out this year as planned but this is a recognition of TV done very very well, there's been other recognitions for example, the morning show had quite a few nominations. And again, it was a show that it was not like loved the beginning by tics but I think people kind of were said, you know what actually was a good series especially the last episode of series. So another one I'm very happy also have very significant for apple as well as the morning show was you know the show that apple try to use as? To make its mark as someone that could compete with the network giants and streaming giants as well. So not only is a very good sign for the a seeing Jennifer Aniston Steve Carell nominated but also to see apple when they've been investing into the right series hiring great actors, great writers, Great Producers, and that it actually pays off and Collado. So what if Jimmy Kimmel? This time I mean, as you rightly said, we don't know how ceremony is going to be, but you know what bt awards they did try and they did like a special ceremony. Names might have to do that because it's happening on the twentieth September. That's very the as the television academy has said that the creative emmys, which you know the creative emmy is usually happen a few days before the Primetime Emmys and they've already said that those are happening on an online platform a few days before didn't haven't clarified yet for the AMI's themselves. We still don't know exactly what are the plans now? What is interesting about Jimmy, Kimmel here hosting I think it's his third time hosting is that he is nominated as well. His show Jimmy came alive is on the outstanding variety talk series, and there's always very endearing one. You know one of the host sometimes even people introducing the award end up being nominated. So yeah, I'd be curious to see exactly how that's going to pay out I don't know. was there any surprise nomination here on this list for you? Fernando as F- in the morning show was A bit of a surprise for me and also in the drama category I mean, we saw men hurriedly having quite a lot of nominations itself Jeremy Pope for his role in Hollywood for a best actor on limited series or movie because Lotte I think competition program should go again to Rupo's drag race. Oh Yeah. His love rapport figured they will he would win again just shows how you know when Ru Paul's drag race started. It was a very Niche not known at the public, and now they've been doing this for over a decade now, and there's just shows how you know there is an appetite for a show like that that it is mainstream, there's no way you can't say that anymore and is so empowering it is, of course, one of my personal favorites as well. It was really nice last year to be there when they won and to see Europol come on stage with a lot of the. Of the show as well and some of the judges when we look at that category I'm partial to and I would love to see them winning again on that category.

I'm somehow they have time to bake fresh banana. Bread love the UKULELE and make Origami animals. Want that for myself. Oh that will reading the entire works of Angelou. I would love that. Kirk Douglas, Towering Icon of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Dies at 103

"So that's from the nineteen sixty film Spartacus it's Kirk Douglas in one of the best known scenes of his long Hollywood career Kirk Douglas died yesterday at the remarkable age of a hundred and three throughout the fifties and sixties he embodied a certain romantic idea of Old World masculinity in his films he often made movies about cowboys and soldiers prize fighters and rebels his most famous movie was Spartacus but the movie that made him a Hollywood star with the nineteen forty nine boxing movie champion the person he was in real life often mirrored the tough man that he portrayed on screen Kirk Douglas had a difficult childhood he grew up in New York in extreme poverty he actually was a wrestler and spent time in the navy before his success on Broadway he later went on to make movies that now define the era of Hollywood classics in nineteen eighty one Kirk Douglas received the presidential medal of freedom and fifteen years later he earned an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement Jason Gorder he's a movie critic and a big fan of Kirk Douglas is work and he's here to reflect on the actors impact on the film world to chase and thanks for being here my pleasure and honor to speak about this giant of talent what do you think when you think Kirk Douglas I think somebody that helped change what we think of of modern cinema frankly he's he bridge is very much the gap between sort of the traditional Hollywood leading man that's sort of you know the beautiful dimple in the middle of his chin the incredible physique a sort of sense that we had of the strong man the strong big actor but is also somebody that brought a great deal sensitivity to his character system the steps two wasn't simply a matinee idol who somebody that sort of brought through his performance a dramatic richness that would we'd be exhibited in many of his contemporaries people like Burt Lancaster but also into people like Marlon Brando who get celebrations and more but he also brought a very political a sophisticated political angle to his films he somebody that absolutely shifted the conversation but what it was like to be a performer not simply studio tool but somebody that could take charge of his own career and shift at and that's when the look of the great things that he did everything that we saw after the fact of of these performers that are able to shape their careers much more explicit way he was a pioneer on that front would you consider that is greatest contribution or what for you just it gleams above all the rest I mean for me my personal connection or to serve master pieces which are the films that he did with Kubrick puzzle glory was a film that nobody wanted to make nobody wanted to make this sort of anti war sophisticated look at World War one it was sort of it was a war that nobody was particularly interested in such a grisly film that about moral ambivalence that wasn't really to be taken up and he and his production company Brina named after his mother foster got the money together now a great deal the budget went towards him but nonetheless he gave a shot to this this quirky New York filmmaker called Stanley Kubrick an fifty seven nineteen sixty while he was doing Spartacus the other our grand collaboration there's another director and after a week Douglas realize this is not going to work and he brought in correct now that the dynamic between the two of them was a little tenuous but none the less he brought this to start the superstar director to one of the sort of last big epic Hollywood cast of thousands films and still injected with the with this real subtlety and real intelligence of performance and finally with Spartacus again the connection Douglas Trumbull is it was Kirk Douglas who unapologetically said this blacklisted armed writer is going to get credit actually John F. Kennedy cross the picket line in order to see Spartacus this is what broke the blacklist the famous arms those that were accused of being communists so in so many ways I Kirk Douglas of star power was used for good he was used to bring stories to screen that would have been brought otherwise he brought directors that otherwise Hollywood didn't think that were I'm sufficiently commercial and you brought to light the hypocrisy of actually bring these writers to to dream if for the if you only watch two forms of Kirk Douglas these are ones actually fully sober in you know a lot of people will be doing that tonight I want to play you a clip from almost thirty years ago no looking back I realize I was much more successful when I forgot about being a hit for years I proclaim loudly that a movie must be good entertainment no messages for me but I've changed it must in some small way touch improve humanity that was Kirk Douglas accepting a lifetime achievement award from the American film institute and you can hear that Douglas was ingesting this chiseled jaw line or a typical Hollywood celebrity of the era is like you say he was a man of principle and you're quite cranky I hear that a lot of people didn't get along with him but is that how he will be remembered do you think is a man of principle was incredibly philanthropic and and again his story is fascinating he has for his father was a smart the dealer a rag command in upstate New York came from nothing I'm dealt with severe anti semitism the sun changes name sort of inculcates himself into Hollywood as a sort of brash fully American leading man from that he saw the the division between high and low and he really took that film trophic spirit that's that moral spirit the moral conviction through his career what a hundred three is a long time to live but he lived a very very full life and I believe when he was getting at AFI award he had just been in a tragic helicopter accident then here he is again I'm coming to the fore because he was called his performance he was there to actually have the signs that he also had a stroke he's kind of had nine lives and his son Michael Douglas was watching all of this and he's an acting icon in his own right do you think that that what is it from Kirk Douglas that you see that Michael Douglas has it has in him I mean I've said the drive the conviction but of the the big deal is that once a problem OR one flew over the cuckoo's nest was a Kirk Douglas production he actually did the stage production he got the rights again he saw this very quirky very politically charged project his son would eventually produce the film in the Afghan Oscar glory because of that so so the the tradition certainly carries along with Michael Douglas but the I mean it's it's for for viewers who are not familiar with this film we just don't really have a Kirk Douglas anymore the system doesn't really work with that but we have certain people the Brad Pitt's of this world who are stars but also bringing in these films after their production so it's quite remarkable thank you so much Jason Jason is a film critic he joins us live in the studio to talk about the death of Hollywood actor Kirk Douglas who died yesterday at the age of a hundred

40th anniversary of Three Mile Island accident

"One of the stories that that victory in the news at the top of the show involved a Three Mile Island for those people who don't remember. There was a nuclear meltdown at a power plant in Pennsylvania. And. It was a it was a, you know, it was it was really really scary. And what happened was it was the nuclear power plants, south central Pennsylvania country Mile Island in March of nineteen Seventy-nine on this date March twentieth. Nineteen seventy nine series of mechanical and human errors of the plant caused the worst commercial nuclear accident in US history, resulting in a partial meltdown that released dangerous radioactive gases into the atmosphere. Three Mile Island stoked public fears about nuclear power and nuclear power plants have been built in the United States since that accident, and then unbelievably two weeks later, the film, the China syndrome was released which of course, logically. Also turns forty years old this year. The thriller called the China syndrome starring Jane Fonda, Jack Lemmon and Michael Douglas dealt with the aftermath of a fictional nuclear meltdown at reactor outside of Los Angeles. The nuclear industry at the time dismissed the China's central plows farfetched, but then you know, obviously, they couldn't do it anymore. So I did not know that that happened today. And I remember it vividly. Remember when Three Mile Island app was thirteen years old and everybody was freaking out about nuclear power. And everybody was freaking out about the accident. And then this movie China syndrome comes out. And of course, then the box office goes through the roof for that movie because real life events were being portrayed are these these fictional events in the movie were being actually really happening in real life. And so the box office just went through the through the roof with that. And it's also a great movie if you've never seen China syndrome another movie that celebrating its fortieth anniversary this year. You should see it. It is. It's it's a great thriller. It's really says a lot about not just nuclear power. But about the media. And. Great performances all the way around. Jane Fonda is great any Michael Douglas's. Great input. Especially Jack Lemmon Jack Lemmon is unbelievably great in the China's central. So that the Three Mile Island accident happened today forty years ago and China's syndrome came out at this time to

"And this consumer research and advocacy group did this study and they tested apple grape. Pair fruit plans. They found elevated levels of the heavy metal in nearly half of them. Did you ever get orange juice pushed on you? And your kid I got like grapefruit juice tomato juice and orange juice a little bit. But then when it had all that sugar in it than my mother run a different way. But. Consumer reports tested. Forty five drinks found twenty one had enough of a single heavy metal or combination of metals to concern people who work with consumer reports on this study and just drinking four ounces a day would cause concern because of the compound risk of the what it does. And then you have elevated levels of heavy metals and other foods, so then you put in juice, and it just that's even worse. Okay. So grapefruit juice. Juice blends had the highest level of heavy metals. So just be careful out there. If you're doing the drinking, the juices thing, it kind of makes sense, right? I just had this discussion with the other that we get all that pushed on us about drinking us so healthy. And it's just loaded with stuff. That's not so healthy. I bet you're depressed. That Ben Affleck will not stars, Bruce, Wayne, he will not be the next Batman in twenty twenty one. He's not going to be the Cape crusader. Apparently, it's going to be different. You know, a new movie, but they're going to have to have another Batman. He played Batman in Batman versus superman. Dawn of Justice suicide squad and Justice league. Forgot how many times he did that. So the new one that comes out is going to be in June of twenty twenty one and they're going to focus on a younger. Bruce, Wayne, whoever that's going to be and it is a hard roll to do because the expectation there. What is Batman supposed to be like, and for some reason it can be deadly? For some of these actors to play Batman, or at least it feels deadly. Anyway. Right. Feels deadly tesla you cannot keep us down says, Elon Musk. He's gearing up for the model y crossover and tesla actually made another nice prophet. So it's he's down in the court of public opinion. I think in some areas, but with a debt payment of more than nine hundred million do within weeks, unless the company stock makes the leap Tesla's under pressure to improve its operations through cost reductions faster. Sales. So they made a profit of one hundred and thirty nine point five billion in the fourth quarter. That's up from a loss of six hundred seventy five point four million a year earlier, and after some brutal losses they've gone in the opposite direction. So they they're helping the model why is going to boost all of that. It is a pretty car. But it's going to be hard to make a profit in the first quarter of twenty nineteen unless you know, they're enacting the four hundred million in cost cuts, and that's going to dent the bottom line would think a little bit. But he says Yuan musk that he's still optimistic. Hey, what's the what if he makes like one hundred dollars more we made a hundred dollars over what we expected now that they wouldn't even notice anything. That's that is like a half of a penny. But they've had improvements in manufacturing. They've had some construction things to speed up. And I guess they're they're doing that. You gotta say, the guy's brilliant. Whether he's eccentric or a little nutty. He is absolutely brilliant in some areas. How you come up with this idea? Then all of a sudden, you're in space, and you're launching that and you actually enacted despite the odds being really against you. But you hang in there. There's something about. Hanging in there. Something about that. And he he definitely was that guy that hung around figured it out got the right people on his team got the people back. And yes, there you go. Are you might say, yes? Or no to this. But Glenn Close who's won. A couple of words. Now, this is Hollywood's big season of awards with the sag awards Golden Globes. And then ultimately the Oscars. She says she's down for an update on fatal attraction. So there has been rumors, but will it really happen fatal attraction. I don't know how many years ago that movie was remember it was Glenn Close who became obsessed with a married, man. Michael Douglas, and then they have like this weekend affair, then she boils the bunny goes after him goes after her his kid was crazy. I've thought any man who watches this. There's no way they're going down that path no way. She's seventy one. I mean, it would be where's your life? Now. I guess if they did that and she just earned her seventh. Oscar nod for the wife of movie that came out this past year, and she got her fourth Oscar nomination in eighty eight for playing Alex forest in this movie, fatal attraction that some people would like to see. The second part of it. I guess we do live in the land of sequels if you can find the audience, and you can pull it off, I suppose, this is a good deal. If you've got a child who's fourteen that's really a teenager, but a fourteen or younger, you can get a free seat on a domestic flight on frontier airlines. They've got this thing called discount den. And that's boy, that's pretty big. Because usually it's infants are kids that are way younger. Now, you got to pay for the membership is just under sixty dollars. But if you fly enough that would pay itself off from one flight.

"'cause like out of all the films you've done that. I seen him. Remember that was something where you almost lost yourself where where like you can watch that movie. And you know, it wasn't a Michael Douglas movie. And right, right. What was the story around? Taking that part in. How did you approach it? I just I it was it was a just Ebi Rosebud that beautifully written script and to me right after the Vietnam war was over and it's hard for a lot of people. Remembering character, not the movie wasn't made them know. No. Thing and people kind of get an LA LA was sort of the defense center. It wasn't the movie business. We had our major defense contractors were here in Los Angeles. Where you with the rockets, and and and so here was a guy who had you know, he's a patriot the country and was pink slipped for his job and the defense contracting business because the war was over. We don't need you anymore, and who kinda just lost it. Yeah. You know, divorced, this wife, and this and that and losses identity, and and this vision of having a of leaving his car caught in a traffic jam and walking across LA in in in dealing with every politically incorrect situation might happen to like it was a pick rescue. It was I can d from just gets worse and worse. It wasn't funny it well. And some of them were funny, and let's the other area I love I mean, it's a lot to do with the Kaminsky method. I love nervous laughter. I have drama dis. I know in this area where you go resistant life is about it with with forest. What was what what's his name from Fred forest fourth? Yeah. That almost got comedic played that. So broad the Korean grocery store in your reactions is true that there was definitely comedy in there. It was dark comedy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I love Dr common because I do I'm a sick. I look, you know, I love it too. But like I dislike in in really thinking about it is almost a comedic character that because of like just that it's like life is shitting on him. They just can't believe absurdities just the insanity of of life not making any any sense. Like when you immerse yourself in a role like that one and not not unlike commit ski method there's new series on Netflix. I think is pretty close to familiar territory for you as a person, you know, in terms of show business. Maybe right of who you are. But when you when you. Really think about something like falling down or like playing Liberace right where well Liberace's a guy. But this falling down guy. I what do you got when you as an actor? What are you gotta turn on or off in you to sort of like, you know, to to peel away that thing do you think about that? I, you know, it's it's it's the writing it's picked, you know, it'd be rose Smith. It's just really really good writing. Right. And then you work Jack Nicholson always accuses amazing like he Mike he'd the year. But you're a hair actor, you know, I mean different ways, you know, like like like, you gotta cut your falling now. Now is a flattop you find a different ways, you know? Gordon gecko is in a Pat Riley. You know, you find you find different kinds of hair thing, you find different stuff that kinda helps gives you. It's true. You put your pants on. And you become the that's what I do. And that's the fun is basically two ways of acting. You know, one is putting on the mask and the clown. And that's the joy of character idea. That's the fun of character. Actually. Yeah. Is you create this kind of character? Is you all the freedom in the world? Yeah. Or you're doing stuff where you're stripping everything off you going down to your skeleton. Yeah. And that so for the longest time somebody told me early on about acting. So, you know, the camera can tell when you're lying. Who who the camera can tell when you're lying so earlier in my career? Acting was so painful because I was getting so much like with reality in trying to be truthful, and and acting was painful, and then they say, wait a minute. I lie every day. At least once a day. I lie about something. That's what led the power I li-. I mean and also realize waiter acting is all about lying, right? His just being a good liar. Isn't it?.

"Been the crux of my my career is the gray area. I am. I am an might be. We talked earlier about the Vietnam war where you know, the biggest difference Icees between black hats and white hats and World War Two and the westerns and good guys bad guys. And then for me from the sixties seventies and everything was more gray area. Sure. As to who's right and who's wrong, right? What's good? And what's now, we have what's true? And what isn't exactly exactly, you know. And that is the area that I guess I didn't consciously do it. But has overcome looked back over all my projects is this area. People struggling to do the right thing, but still have avarice. Yeah. The flows desire everything else in. How do you do the right thing? Interesting because it's interesting because the seventies. Movies during the war. You know, where these these these anti heroes it sort of became champion where we're more sort of existential challenged as opposed to morally challenge exactly and your dad to go. Like he played a lotta heavies. Yeah. I mean out of the past is one of my favorite movies. Yeah. Fucking love them ace in the hole. Oh, as a whole Jesus it was hard to movie day. Why? So as you do these movies like, and then there was you did a couple where the guy you were at the you're at both sides of it. You were the guy having the affair in what the fatal attraction then in in burder. I mean, the one with Demi Moore that was disclosure of. That was nice where you played the other side of that. Yeah. I'm surprised that I've been I'm I shouldn't even mention this. But during this whole meet to move yet and everybody I've been surprised that people haven't jumped out that. She was that was a little was a little in your face where we kind of did a reverse thing on harassment. We had a female. Boss. What? Yeah. Why hasn't been used as an ex? Yeah. I it seems like they're more concerned. It's a tougher thing to to to in terms of holding people accountable for the work. They did they're more concerned with what you did. Right. Right. But, but so as you continue to act, I mean, you were able to really have a shot at everything, you know, action hero. I tried. I mean, I think the thing that I'm most proud about. Now is you're right. Most actress sort of find a. A mold or a certain identity and people say to me all the time is Michael Douglas. You know, I when I see your name. I don't know what is going to be. Yeah. But I know is going to be good, right? And I go all right, man. Thank you. Yeah. You know? So it's true. You bring yourself to all of it. There's something about you that when we all kind of. No, I think that's the nature of like. Yeah. Me your movie star, you know, in your great actor. But like there's something about you. You're not a character actor per se. I li- I love to do character. But you're gonna you know. Michael Douglas, now, you're not one of those like who's that guy that guy all the time? Right. You know, you're not Ned Beatty. Bright. Not yet. That blessing. He's a fighting my weight though. You've played presidents. You've played you know, you've done the whole the whole Yang. So I, but there are certain characters like also in the Kaminsky method is well because. A movie about old guys right in about guys that are dealing with those issues. But like, you it seems like there's been a lot of points in your life where you've played characters that you relate to certain elements of your life. I mean, like traffic that was a hell of a rolled traffic was was great. I'm I'm I keep up on current events. I mean, I really rely newspapers. I I like to think that I'm sort of been in touch with stuff. And and so, you know, people I do take pride and sort of going with the zeitgeist is so whether it's a movie like falling down that was that was an insane movie. Yeah. Who directed that? "Tf? Can I read you another Email would that be alright comedians laughing? Oh, this is not the one. I wanted to read. But this is a nice one. I'll read this comedians, laughing is the subject line. Dear Mark, I've been a fan for a long time. Almost since the beginning. I remember hearing the Gallagher and Carlos Mencia, and Robin Williams interviews and having my mind blown I evidently sought out each past episode as I kept up with all the new ones. I can't listen to every episode now, but I always listened when you're interviewing a comedian not only because I love comedy and comedians. But because there's this thing that happens every time you interview, a fellow comic at some point one of you makes the other laugh, and you both just let it rip the kind of deep. Full-throated laughter. That is so rare in the world, it's like a tonic for the soul. Just to hear it and often you are laughing about something awful some terrible thing that happened to one of you. But you look back on it and laugh and laugh and laugh, it's a beautiful thing. Some true deep wisdom. Thanks for bringing it it brightens my day and my world every time best John. Yeah. And. You know, what comedians? Find funny. It does go pretty deep. So all right. I think we're okay. I wanted to read this other one. But you know, why am I even telling you, maybe I'll read it next time. What difference? Does it make now am I right? Michael Douglas is here. Michael Douglas is someone I feel like he dug deep into my brain. Because my mother I think had a crush on him. Really? I remember watching the streets of San Francisco at the base of my parents bed because my mom would lay in bed and watch it. You know, they watch TV in their bedroom. We'd all go in there at some point. But but yeah, so I think that was it was the streets of San Francisco, but he feels like somebody. I've watched my entire life because I have he's now starring in the Netflix original series, the Kaminsky method along with Alan Arkin. It's available for.

"It stars, Michael Douglas as this respected acting teacher who sort of trying to cope with aging, and he's also trying to help his best friend, Alan arcton who suffering a tremendous loss and his life. These guys have been friends for forty years and he's trying to help them through it. And there's a Nuff, Chuck, Lory, kinda smart alecky humor in it to make an interesting, but there's a lot of drama there for these two guys, especially. Somebody like Alan Arkin who can be funny and be serious and do both really well. And you know, maybe it's just because I'm a man of a certain age these days, but it's really cool to see a TV show about getting older that isn't like this one that's going to be on FOX called the cool kids where it's all older people, cracking jokes about taking prescription drugs and alcohol and acting like frat boys out on a bender only there seventy. So at least this is a show I should clarify. I groaned there and I haven't even watched. Trailer and and I'm sure you probably have. That's all you need to see. But Kamensky method is a single camera. It's Chuck Laurie doing something very personal. He took a long time to write this and talk with him a little bit about it in LA in July. It's very good. I, I was surprised at how much I liked it. And again, it may be because it's sort of, you know where my life is now myself, even though these characters are older, they're in their seventies and eighties, but it is great to see television tackle something like this with a guy who's not known for being subtle and being mature, but he really pulls enough Stephen year man of a certain age. Wow. Thank you. It was sort of was that back? Was that front hand. Now. Now I Stephen, you're pretty old. I'm sorry. Let me say that again. Louder. Stephen. My other choice was Steven. You're next. And that's not interesting at all. So I figured all right, Steven, you are next and I have to say, before we go to this pick Stevens is also a Netflix show. Now we we, we did not set out to be quite this Netflix, but as Eric. And I were saying at the beginning, particularly the stuff in the fall, it's hard to find broadcast stuff to be excited about. There are few things for midseason that I'm excited about, but for fall who boy and I really struggled when I was looking over kind of a list of shows that we're coming out. I kind of came down to two, and then I'm like, man, I got to pick the one that isn't Netflix, and then I realized they were both now. Because I thought about doing that Hassan montage, talk show because I like him so much. It's on Netflix. So I just went with a really ambitious looking show called maniac at dropped, September twenty. First on net flicks. This show has to immediately obvious things going for it. When you watch the trailer, it has incredible looking visual effects, and it has pedigree, head, agree, pedigree, pedigree, it is directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga who did beasts of no nation, which was very acclaimed also for net flicks. Then you look at this cast Emma stone and Jonah hill. Are your leads your supporting cast includes Justin throw and Sally field and Sonora Mizuno in some pretty impressive wigs. But it is now. Now the Americans is off the air. I need my wig. Exactly. And there's been a lot of mystery surrounding this show as it's been in development. They have kept very tight lipped about what this show is about. It is based on a Norwegian show also called maniac that is set in a mental facility. The plot that Netflix has given people is and I quote maniac is the story of two strangers who find themselves caught up in a mind, bending pharmaceutical trial gone awry, and I genuinely don't know much more than that. Do you know much more than that are?.

"I definitely like the sperm a lot more than the first ant man. Yeah. This phone was just a bit tighter, even though I think we'll get into this. I think in a second, I think there were just two way too many characters. They're a little bit too many plot lines going on. I really think they should have spent more time developing ghost who is the primary antagonised in this phone and at the same time as a Scott and hope in Hank Pym play by Michael Douglas are trying to get their lab back from ghost who needs it for her own reasons which won't get into for your spoilers. Walton gardens is also trying to get the lab and he has his own cronies, and it's to me, I think Walson Goggin is always welcome. Love a bit of Goggin, but. He didn't need to be a misnomer as much. I think I would have been happy with setting up for something in the long term and then spending more time developing ghost as a really solid foil to hope than dine who is the new wasp. And because ghost also has a, there's more suspect way to say. There's so much going on. I'll start there. There's really a lot going on, but ghost his play by Hannah. John Camen pronounce her name, who's beautiful, really incredible actress. She in this film is really set up. I think to be quite interesting villain, but they never do quite enough with her. She has an adoptive father in the film. We won't say who that is, but they don't really develop that relationship between the two of them. And I think that would have been so interesting to juxtapose their relationship with Hank and hopes. So interesting about this film. We say this shift away from the epic scale of infancy will, but it has a sort of sequel bloat. So it follows on from the last atman where Paul road is sort of a hapless dant. He has a young daughter and his ex wife is now shacked up with with somebody else. So he has to deal with plus the fact that he's now an ex cone. So he. He's on house arrest and has the FBI on his case as well as this love hate relationship with both Hank Pym and hope, dine. And then they are a key hole into this world of absolute Sifi babbling going into the quantum realm. Moving in the space between atoms killer structure. They just told very, very quickly almost hoping that you went on the stand. Okay. If we condense everything to do with what we're actually doing. Just look. The conduct of the quantum realm still into it is it's pure nineteen. Fifty sci-fi. Yeah, exactly. But then also, this is the probably the most immediately entertaining sort of marvel movie. It's comedy. You have pulled bringing that sort of humid that you'd expect, and it's still that same into play with Michael character runs on these long anecdotes. Another highlight of the movie is one of those in one of the film strands is its charm. Like there's no one in this cast that you don't love. Mary specific to this cost as well. As soon as Paul Rudd started being funny, I felt that it was very specific to him and I thought, well, of course, thank God. Paul Rudd is in this I'm full. There is the reason for me to watch it and I'm really enjoying it. Also just think it's important to know about Paul Rudd looks amazing. Is bad, has not been set enough critical. You look great. It just keeps getting better and Beth relations. Everything does look great because I think that is also to do with the pilots and the suits, and it feels like really plays on the specificities of the power as opposed to just being I can go smooth the, I can stop this bad thing from happening. They really play around with the effects of the suits in the pile of which they didn't as much..

"So i think rather sort of alluded to this or similar idea a little bit earlier which i think is interesting i think it's an interesting idea these avi the marvel cinematic universe because of the infinite number of marvel cinematic universe is we presumably will witness the one which everything works out ok whereas in some sort of metaphysical sense there are millions of other sort of these battles that went on where we don't but we are we're watching the movie where it turns out in okay presumably after the sequel or something right right let like there's another version of ant man where michael douglas actually wins and that's not the one that we get to see right michael douglas is the hero at the end of the story and not paul rudd it's it's a it's an interesting thing principle but marvel has all the ultimate realities in their alternate rallies in these cosmo geez i guess we should probably move on to speak about comic books and alternate realities and things changing that don't change the death all the death in this this movie has so much death in it it's so sad i just go ahead and put is it yeah i'm gonna be on cheese buddies like because look can i point out that i think we have about fifteen months before spiderman two coming out like literally that's next summer movie the shooting it right now they probably halfway through the special effects so get i mean certainly the moment we're spiderman dies any sort of begs not to die that's an affecting moments and that like peop people choked up in the theatre where i saw that and i think even if you know that it's going to be undone as i think most of us sort of do even if you know that the movie is like a done deal and it's coming out next summer you can still feel sad when that happens and i think it's i think for that it's a testament to how successfully they have brought that character into this universe despite most people not wanting another version of spider man in two thousand eighteen that that moment was affecting.
