Hey michael we've talked a lot about vaccines and mandating vaccines. And i think you're not in favor talked a lot. How but because of years of racist treatment in the medical community that many people are very suspicious of this vaccination but as we watch the cases rise around the country. We're lucky are here. In massachusetts most of us are vaccinated. Isn't it getting out when we reached the enough is enough phase and say if you're a nursing home worker year front phase worker. You're putting other people in danger. You can't go to work if you're not going to be vaccinated. Yeah i mean it's a tough question is before any employer and any employee right now And i think just even representing the state's fifty two health centers. They're dealing with this as well. You know from a healthcare perspective if you are healthcare's tusha hospital mintel facility Health center you know. There's a a rational basis upon which you may decide to mandate that your employees Get vaccinated because of course implications are bigger than just you. It's about the patients who walk in your door and they'll figure that piece out but there's this stuff to figure out in terms of whether you can mandate the salon report that they've been vaccinated right whether they communicate that to you as their employer. And then there's the other legal issues around whether you can mandate that people actually get a vaccine So a lot of that stuff is being discussed. We exactly a quite frankly even here at the mass leaking is we're convening all the health centers in the state for a illegal training on sort of what the implications are that being said. I do believe we. We run the same risk. We ran in testing right when people are thinking about mandating testing and now mandating vaccines whether you can terminate someone if they don't get a vaccine there's data that shows that does disparately impact communities of color. Just the disease. It's disparately impact community color in terms of economics the the downturn in the economy the live furloughs layoffs..

"Before all else. J in Cheryl 65 64. Would have celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary tomorrow. Into all the family members who share these beautiful stories. We thank you. Our hearts go out to you and to all those who have lost loved ones in this pandemic. Most Reverend Michael Curry is the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church of the United States. His latest book is Love is the way holding onto Hope in Troubling times. It's about how love is shaped his life as a descendant of slaves who rose to the top position in a predominantly white church. We spoke earlier and I began by asking whether he foresaw any of the conflicts of this moment. The perfect storm of a pandemic or racial reckoning in a polarized American society had wasn't in my mind, but I knew that we were divided. I knew that we had some racial history with some past with some difficulty. Um And I hope that my story would contribute something positive and constructive to that again. Pre pandemic or B C is I like to say before covert. I'm struck Bishop Curry that you say it's a look at what love is like, even and I'm quoting In a world that feels at times closer to a nightmare in the dream. I mean, you're pointing to the fact that we've been through some really tough times we have been through really tough times. Andre. Reality is that happens. That's just the nature of life. It's good and bad is the alchemy of all of it mixed in together. I've been blessed in the course of my life. They've been around people who have not given into fate. If you will, who have been people of faith who people who have struggled against the odds, and one of the patterns that I've seen in their lives has been that they were people who would not submit. Selfishness or hatred or bigotry. But who really did live lives of love and believe in it. I remember my Aunt Leigh. And when I was a kid used to tell us and she was quoting Booker T. Washington I don't know if she knew it. But she Woz she used to say, never let anybody dread you so low as to hate them. I grew up with a father who worked in civil rights against the odds. Barack Obama wasn't even on the horizon in 1960. And yet hope goes beyond the moments and the exigencies of the moment and dares to believe in something something possible that we can't even see. It's kind of like George Bernard Shaw. Some men see things that they are and ask why we dream things that never were and asked, Why not? That's hope that's living by the power of love, and that's living in spite of a nightmare. There are many people who have loved America, in spite of the fact that America often didn't love them Native American folk black folk, um, Latin ex folk, poor folk who have not always benefited from from this great country. But they've loved America. You know, my grandmother had my two uncles their pictures. I can remember their pictures in their army Air Corps uniforms. Having fought in World War two. She lost members of our family. The two of them came home. During that war. My wife's father, grandfather fought in the first World War. She's actually got his discharge papers from World War one black folk they fought for this country and had to fight in order to fight for this country. Not necessarily because of what the country Woz but because of what the country sometimes in spite of its contradictions stood for. We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal. That's true, even when our country failed to live up to that. That's what people like Ruth Bader Ginsburg stood for. In spite of the contradiction. That's what I mean by hope. Hope doesn't just accept the way things are. It dares to hope and believe that something can be different and there and then works to make that happen. And Bishop Curry. How do how do you make this supply and people's lives when we live in such Politically divided time. Such a time of when people look at each other across this gaping divide in our country. That is where love actually comes in. If we take some love out of the sentimental Take it out of there. Even the romantic just for a moment, Andre. Think of the kind of love the Scriptures talk about the kind of love that Moses talked about that Jesus of Nazareth that our religious traditions have spoken up. That kind of love tends to be unselfish love that actually seeks the good and the welfare of others, as well as the self. On the great seal of the United States above the eagle air. The Latin words e pluribus aluminum. Those words come from the writings of of Cicero. Who said, and I quote when when a person loves another as much if not more, as he loves himself, then e pluribus onem, one from many becomes possible that is the motto motto of this country. It is based on willingness to love and be concerned about others as well as yourself. That makes one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice. All love is the key because love is unselfish, sacrificial living. And when we live like that, then Congress can work. When, when? When we live like that, Then the economy can work. When we live like that, Then there is equal opportunity for all you see what I'm getting at Love is not a sentiment. It's a commitment. To the common Good. And Bishop Curry. I'm also thinking is we start this new year of people who, frankly feel isolated there it for at home, whether they've lost a job or can't be with their family..

"Dear God, brother. Do you realize what incredible words? Those are? Those ideals are true. They're right, even when the nation didn't live them, And I think the folk who raised me believed in those ideals in spite of the fact that the nation didn't live up to them. Wow. We could do it again, and epigraph at the beginning of one of the chapters in your book is a quote from the Austrian Jewish Rabbi Martin Buber. Quote. Love is the responsibility of an eye. For you. And in this consists what cannot consist in any feeling the equality of all lovers. What a Martin Buber quote you chose there. You think about this idea in the context of the pandemic, our global health crisis. So what were you thinking? Yeah, well, actually, I wrote that That's after was before the pandemic like no, This is above that like that, But goobers wisdom, his insight. It's still true. There is a profoundly talks about equality of lovers. What he was getting it was that if we see each person each human being Um not simply as a thing, hey would say as it But as thou as someone who is sacred because they bear the image is Genesis. One says they bear the image of God, which confers not the king would say infinite metaphysical value on each human beings. If we see each other as thou as fellow Children of God That means we treat each other differently. Cicero had the same insight when each person loves the other as much as he loves himself that makes e pluribus own impossible. That's what Boomer grasped and understood, he said. When we see the other as an it as a thing as an object, instead of as a subject of relationship as a person of a child of God, When we see another event it then the unthinkable becomes possible. Then shadows. Then you can enslave noticed that every time something diabolical has happened in history, it has been necessary. Defined the other person as not a human being, but as a thing, and therefore you can enslave them. Therefore, you can force removed Indians native peoples. From their land. Therefore, you have Holocaust Therefore you have genocide. You turn the person into a thing into an it and you treat them like it. Than anything becomes possible. But if that other person is a foul A child of God. That changes the relationship and it changes our politics. So on that I want to return, you know, last minute to the question I started this segment with which is the one that opens the third chapter of your book. And it's the question. How do you find the energy to keep loving? When the world seems to be going the other way. Can you answer your own question for our listeners? You figure out how to nurture a real relationship, a living relationship with the source of love, which we call God and you nurture that Take time every day to be in touch with that God and dwell deeply with that God. And take time each day to be in touch and dwell deeply with others. I really believe I'm learning from this pandemic. We need God and we need each other. I mean, the reason we're all like going kind of crazy Stir crazy is because we can't be with each other. Even though we're each other's biggest headaches. We still need each other. Stay in touch with God Stay in touch with each other. I joke will give you high tech. Um zoom if you low tech text if you know, tech call, but stay in touch with each other and stay in touch with God, The old Slade you to say it this way. Walk together Children, And don't you get weary because there's a great camp meeting in the promised land. Bishop Michael Curry, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church. Many of you saw him for the first time at his historic sermon at the Royal wedding. He also served as officiant for the funeral of the late Senator John McCain. His new book is called Love is the way Holding on to Hope. In troubling times, Bishop Thank you so much. It's an honor. Thank you and God bless you. Rain later on W N Y c much more to come. Turnout.

"Hi. Welcome to season two episode thirty of the Rookie Redder show. If you're looking for this episode, a couple of weeks ago I, do apologize things got really busy and out of control and so today is a twofer. I will be as long as technology cooperates releasing a second one right after this. So episode thirty and thirty, one chip both post today. So a twofer. Okay today we're going to be looking at the emotional craft of fiction by Don Masks. Don Mass is the founder of the Donald Mass, Literary Agency which specializes in representation for novelists. The agency is comprised of agents, Jennifer Jackson Katie shape woo TA, Cameron McClure Michael Curry, Caitlyn McDonald, Paul Stevens, and Jenny Galloway. And Don Mass himself course the team sells more than one hundred novels annually. To both American and international publishers and represents around a hundred fifty dollars. I. Took that directly from the website probably verbatim. I I learned about don mass through his work with the women's Fiction Writers Association. He offers two intensive workshops annually with feedback to members of the organization that are lucky enough to sign up for that session I was lucky enough to be in one of those, and it was fantastic. He addresses similar topics in those sessions to the ones found in this book and. I'll have links to the women's fiction writers association as well. So let's get to my three things number one. Here's another writing continuum. You've heard about the panther plotter continuum and the literary genre continuum or literary commercial continuum people sometimes ask mass and others. What's the right balance between showing and telling you hear a lot of show don't tell but the truth is that it's A continuum. So he suggests that the type of story you right will enlarge part determine where your strategies balance between showing and telling may fall. So for instance, romance fiction is more likely to rely more heavily on inner mode, which is telling feelings than a thriller novel, which will likely rely more heavily on the outermost showing feelings through actions. So the norms within your. Genre. Will dictate a lot about works for your story in a way that connects with your readers and folks the kinds of emotions that they're seeking when they pick up your book number to connect the inner and the outer journey..

"Your decision to go to church to be inside that building. I wouldn't be anywhere else. Aren't you concerned you could infect other people if you get sick inside covering Jesus is blood covered? Jesus there has various religious groups around the world enormous old religious traditions. Who thought this is not a big deal. God will protect us. We can still go to the church. The Moscow synagogue in our fate will be our shields and by thinking that way they acted irresponsibly and they put many lives in danger so the viruses testing are finished but hosts testing our rationality. And if he don't act rationally this will be a defeat for the whole world view of a free religion. Stafa OCULUS says the pandemic reminds him of one story in the Islamic tradition. Someone asks the Prophet Muhammad Question. Should I tie up my camel so no one can steal it or should I trust in God the prophet answers tie up your camel and then put your trust in God in Judaism? There's a similar idea that the faithful will be protected by the divine but people need to live up to their side of the bargain too and that means living a life that emulates the divine says Lila cadged. She's an Orthodox rabbi in Brookline Massachusetts and emulating the divine means following rules means adhering to safety regulations hand washing. I mean one of the most holy aspects and expressions and Jewish life is washing one's hands before consumption of bread in other words before starting any meal there's hand washing with a special blessing. Canton says the Talmud. The central text in the Jewish tradition has a lot to say about earthly catastrophes like a pandemic but the most important thing she says is this. Judaism values human life and the care and maintenance of human life above all other things and really this is an opportunity to catapult. The Jewish community really guided by our faith to do good to do right to be in caregiving roles To give charity and to think about what to do when these difficult things happen. But why do bad things like this happen? If there is an all knowing God who's looking out for the best interests of humanity. Why is he or she allowing this wave of death to sweep across the world right now? We are good question. I don't have an answer and nobody else does either. Michael Curry is the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church. He says the New Testament doesn't help. Answer this question either. There's no you know Jesus words are in red letter. There's no like gold letters father. And when he's on the Cross in Christ my God my God why style forsaken me there is no answer from heaven there is no answer from heaven on the but there is Easter morning hinting at what. He'll preach about on Sunday. Curry mentions a German American theologian born in the late eighteen. Hundreds named Paul Tillich who described faith this way. Faith is not. The absence of doubt is not the absence of fear is not the absence of anxiety is not having all the answers is not adding it. Altogether faith is affirming being in spite of the threat of being. That's his language. Faith is standing for love in spite of the power of hatred selfishness. Fate is caring about others in spite of the powerful temptation. Care less about others and to care only about yourself. Korea says this is a trying time for religious folks from different backgrounds during the high holy days getting together in communal worship is so important and that cannot happen right now. The bishop will be delivering his Easter sermon from his home in North Carolina. It'll be part of the Sunday morning. Service streamed online from the National Cathedral in Washington which will be mostly empty for the world. I'm Matthew Bell. It is a tough time to be sure personally. It always helps me to remember that as hard as things are. There are people.

"It's the Brian Lehrer show on WNYC. Good morning again, everyone and that will play some excerpts from our thirteenth annual Martin Luther King's birthday event here WNYC. It was yesterday at the Apollo theater hosted by all things considered host Jimmy Floyd. And me one of the major highlights was the talk by Bishop Michael curry presiding Bishop and president and CEO, even of the episcopal episcopal church who many people around the world, maybe including you saw for the first time last year when he presided and gave a memorable sermon at the Royal wedding. Yeah. Some of you are going oh that guy. Well, he was memorably yesterday at the Apollo too though, we won't call it a sermon since it was in a secular space. But his theme was certainly derived from scripture to love your neighbor and love yourself will play an extended excerpt now picking it up a few minutes in after he cites the apostle Paul who cited love as. Greatest virtue. King said it this way. We must discover the power of love the redemptive power of love. And when we discover that we will be able to make of this old world a new world because love is the only way the only way. And if you didn't believe the apostle Paul. You still don't believe Dr king? Maybe you'll believe Jimi Hendrix. Jimmy said it this way. When the power of love. Overcomes. The love of power. Then the world will know peace. If power in love. Power in love. It is the only way it is the only motivation. It is the only capacity and power that can move our souls and transform our lives and change this society and global community. Love is the way it is. The only way you don't remember anything else. I say tonight. Just remember love is the only way when you get back to work in that person gets on your nerve. You know, they've been talking about you behind your back. Just remember that love is the only way. You get on that subway tomorrow. And somebody jumps in front of you. When you trying to get on just remember before you speak. Love is the only way if you're driving in your car and somebody cuts in front of you and you roll down your humid press your button to roll down your window. And you reach out with your hand. To expound in sign language. Just remember give him too. And.

"Nineteen right now, it is time for round one of your Boehner voting presenting to you now three news stories, these are examples of bad stupid or funny human behavior, and you will decide with your votes of these three candidates, which one is the worst which one deserves to go forward to Boehner fight possibly become Boehner of the day seeing winds here it's winter around one. Yes, it's not Boehner of the day yet it'll have to defeat the winner of round two's voting when we do this again at eight twenty we will have three more candidates. You will have to pick a winner of those three that we take the two winners the winner of each round and put them into Boehner fight at nine twenty. That's when Boehner of the day has decided so get comfortable that a lot of work ahead of you two candidates now a third. After the news once you've heard all three then you will vote and one of you lucky random Boehner voters will receive tickets to the Utah international auto expo, here's Boehner candidate number one. Like, the president of the United States. The principal of a school is above the law. And police union officials are upset after a school resource. Officer was escorted out of the Jefferson K through eight building Tuesday. That's Jefferson kindergarten through eighth grade building Tuesday in Warren, Ohio shortly after he issued a ticket to the principal for allegedly parking in a handicap area. The principal was warned several times. Warren police union Representative Michael curry said to w j w resource officer Adam shouldn't chick was ordered and escorted out of the building. By the school's business manager and the head of security in the same fashion as a criminal. Mr. current said jin-shik had been a resource officer in the school for two years. Warren city school superintendent, Steve Chiro did not address the issue but released the following statement. The Warren city school district has worked diligently over the past several years with the city of Warren to create and develop an effective school resource. Officer program are students families and staff have received many benefits from this relationship. And we look forward to continuing this partnership in the future. It is our belief that an individual event or series of events never impede what we've accomplished or effect the positive support and interactions. Our students and staff experience with our officers each day. So in other words, Bob, blah, blah, blah, blah, saying nothing are officer was upset because he had promised a second grader that he would have lunch with her. And he couldn't explain why couldn't be their current and said he was more upset about that incident. Current inside the officer remains working for the police department, but they hope to get him back to his job at the school. So in other words. Ticketed the principal for parking in the handicapped spa. After telling him several times you can't park there. Yeah. But the principal disregarding it got the ticket. And then the principal said I want this officer out of the school. Jerk principle because like the president of the United States. The principal of a school is above the law stinks. Boehner candidate number one. Here's boomer candidate number two. I'm going to kill you with kindness and cleanness is very sharp. Thirty year old Florida man, he is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. After neighbors. Overheard him threatening to kill a person with kindness. According to a report from the Pensacola news journal, Brian Stewart of Milton Florida, allegedly cut his neighbor with a machete style knife. That had the word kindness written on it. I see okay. Not long after the unnamed victim together with another neighbor came to Stewart's house due to yelling and banging that they heard of the residents per an arrest report from the Santa Rosa county sheriff's office. Loud noise at Stewart's residents had been bothering neighbors all day at around midnight. The victim heard the suspect Kelly another person in the house that he was planning to kill them with kindness. Sounds nice. Yeah. Well, it's a big machete with the word kindness. Written on it. Boehner candidate number two. Kill you with kindness and kindness, very sharp. Coming up in a moment. Boehner candidate number three. So I guess we really have to say don't drive while blindfolded. Alright. Boehner candidate number three for round one coming up after this big, boy, news and opinion. Wendo brought to you by want something extra with your rap at subway restaurants. You can buy any signature rap and get a twenty one ounce drink for only a dollar more. Stop by subway today and save..
