"Retired cup. And I hate this usually, but sunset he died doing what he loved, which was doing his job and protecting the innocent people of that city which is. which is wild I, mean he? Your looting and trash places in and you think. You know. I'll take out this old man. Somehow, that's that you're down with the cause because you shoot this poor old guy dead, it just madness. Yeah, in like with the Floyd video it's it's tough very tough to watch the guys gasping. He's dying in front of you. There's nobody helping them at that point there filming them. Filming waited to have to go I mean plus guide spent a lot of time just doing the right thing and that sucks. It's terrible, and they should bring attention to that no doubt and but then again this was never. There was never any division on. Floyd we all thought it was terrible. Everybody can then that everybody wants those cops to pay the price. There was never. It's curly, made I I can't say it enough. And I said yesterday probably the day before, but. The condemnation is across the board universal. There's no support for Derek Chavez. He's the Cup it was in prison is GonNa stay there and I think you'll die. They're probably not of natural causes, which is fine with me I. Don't care the other three cups I. Think will be charged. Maybe they'll be convicted. Who knows, but there's no support for them. There's none there is no division is no polarization here. We're all on the same side on that. Why can't we all be on the same side with looting and burning and and murder of David Dornan Patrick Underwood? Why can't we condemn that? Why does that have to be qualified? Yes I, understand. I understand they're paying the frustration. You understand the pain of people who are going bringing guns and and and. Torching a businesses looting, you understand their pain that the pain of the guys who beat the older woman with the two by fours. You understand their pain. I asked this yesterday. And night, and then I put it out on. Twitter's any of our elected officials in the Boston area in Massachusetts explicitly condemned the looters and the rioters. And because I don't if it's quite the contrary, people like I Anna Presley are encouraging them. She's a congresswoman from Boston. Many many businesses in her district were looted were trashed were vandalized. She doesn't care her. Hearts went to looters. And somebody. Sent me! One tweet from the Mayor Mayor Walsh and I'll say this, Walsh, you know. He could be a dope, but he seems like a decent enough guy he doesn't. Charlie Baker Does Not Charlie. Baker is just crushing the life out of people. He's the governor. He is not a nice man. A Compassionate Man Mayor Walsh seemed like a decent guy who's just misguided. WHO's just not? Thinking clearly but it. He said one tweet. It was a condemning the violence and Lueders it was after I believe two other ones. Thanking all the protesters were coming into his city. He wanted to say I. I'm glad you came wonderful. These rallies are wonderful, but I'm against looting. That was it. That's all I got from all the elected officials than you could check this Dave but the cook. Jerry, you know why Walsh looked around. He saw what happened in Kaplon. Oh, and he's like man. The people with my template will not have these gigs for much longer, so he's trying to do whatever we can to to extend the runway for himself, but the pandering and the inability for these politicians to have enough backbone to have real honest conversations with the community with community leaders only serves. It only serves as a disservice so now. The new bar is the new deal of you signed with these protesters. It starts set. You take a knee for us what we throw bricks. That's the new starting point now from then they'll look for more. Read violence right behind them because you've legitimized by playing ball this way and it's terrible. Give me ways. In a second, that guy is somebody. He knows law enforcement. He knows the community. He knows what. He's commonsense and he's got CAHOKIA's in for him to facebook thing. Rollins keep it going across man. That guy is dynamic. I was disappointed. Didn't go viral didn't go national not much and it was mentioned. on some national news shows that I saw, but it wasn't a big deal. If you missed it. The Police Commissioner Boston's neighbors. Willie gross a big strong. Voice in the city he at a facebook post where he claimed and we believe in, there's no reason not to. That there it is that. A couple of politicians and a group did not want the police to wear headgear protective headgear, because he thought because it was intimidating to the looters, intimidating to the looters and the rioters, and as I tweeted yesterday one cop I think Philadelphia took a brick to the head, and his in critical condition, and these lunatics want to leave the cops vulnerable to the same thing to that kind of violence, and we've seen it. Rocks bricks, fire fireworks fly on Adam. Can you imagine the mindset of a politician saying you shouldn't be able to wear helmet with a face shield issue? Go out there, 'cause that bothers the rioters and looters. It then is remarkable and one of the one of the people we mocked him in the past is. Rep Michael Conley this'll doboy this Pajama boy.

"It's difficult to conceive of any president acknowledging that he's obligated to supply the relevant evidence necessary for congress to exercise its constitutional responsibility for an impeachment proceeding in other words, unless we do this unless we consider this grounds for impeachment. We can't see it sets a precedent for other presidents. Always inviting impeachment. Absolutely. The logic of the committee was very strong, which was that congress has the sole authority to consider peach mint if the president can unilaterally frustrate their ability to investigate whether there's peachable offenses that itself can be an impeachable offense. And in the final report and the report was from the committee to the full house because the full house was gonna vote. Now. Meanwhile, President Nixon resigned it never came to a vote in the full house. But it's simply said the language have very appropriately quoted, which is that if the president can frustrate Congress's sole executive paraffin peach but by stonewalling that itself can be Browns for impeachment. So are you saying that this house today needs to open up at least an impeachment inquiry to demonstrate that this administration would not be cooperating with that? I mean in other words for the same reason as the one given in nineteen seventy four so it doesn't set a precedent. Exactly right today. Congress's attempting. And the report today if she by the staff talks about congressional oversight for possible legislation, but the courts have sentenced Precourt has said the pair of congress enforcers subpoenas is not as strong in that context as it would be. If there were an impeachment inquiry underway. It does not mean that bar or Trump will actually be impeach. It means a congress is launching an official impeachment inquiry to see whether they should be. It's Michael Conley counsel to the House Judiciary committee in the impeachment inquiry of president Nixon in nineteen seventy four weighing in on today's events. Michael. Thank you. "Welcome back to the show is me and brain Rulli, and here is a review brain will be at at the bookseller, Chicago, one of the midwest, great independent bookstores in the heart of Lincoln Square Tuesday night with Jonathan a frequent guest on this show wrote the among many books, his latest that make -nificant I think definitive definitive biography of Mohammed Ali a difficult man to catch and John caught him and got him and put him on the page, and there's a big surprise in the heart and the paperback edition, brain Johns. Great friend, we'll take full responsibility that when you go to the bookseller at seven o'clock Tuesday night, you have drinks at the books. It that's one of the things like, oh, it's a great place. And it's a great store. He will be it is a great great story. Brian will be after that in Arizona sitting in a bookstore with the bestselling author. Michael Conley who has sold millions of I'm gonna try to give him a little boost. Yes. I. Over the seventy five million. Mark, you're such an altruistic such an altruistic. It in in. What is this from publishers weekly? No in the Republic. There's a piece today you can get it online, just Google Brian girly and Michael comedy, just Google Brian girly. The writer of this piece Roberts and England who I think is going to be interviewing Jesse guys. He writes, this about bleak harbor it defies classification making it easier to define it by what it is not. It is not a detective thriller, nor is it a mystery police procedural revenge. Francia chase story yet girly somehow combines elements from all these genres to drive a propulsed neighborhood about small time time small town drama and big city crime the book, he says pivots on the kidnapping of a fifteen year old in what distinguishes this book for me and distinguishes it from the starvation lake trilogy, which I enjoyed tremendously is there are so many interesting and screwed up characters in this book. There are deep dark secrets. Almost everybody in this book. Even I think the reporter for the small paper who eventually winds up running for the Tribune does she not right at the very end. These are not nice people most of them, Brian. Actually, I think. Damage they're flawed. Yeah. Deck doesn't mean. They're not nice people. I think if you met Pete Peters who is the boy was kidnapped. Danny's step that up down. You'd like Pete. His mom care. You would like Kerry if those attitudes sitting on the porch that I read to right? Yeah. I would like them if you met them, especially Pete Pete's just to you know, he's a screw up guy. Certainly Michelle Higgins, who's the reporter the reporter who appeared. I like all reportedly I guess a couple I didn't like that much. That's a for a longer. Michelle Higgins, appears briefly in two of the starvation lake books, and now she's more fleshed out, and I love Michelle. Yeah. These are they're nice people. They're good people. But they are they flawed. Yeah. Like all of us except present company excepted, and you know, it's online you'll you'll see people say unlikeable character. And I told my wife, this is the t shirt, you should get me for this book. She gets me a t shirts for my book for everyone. She finds a really bad quote from her review random suspension trash. That's a great t shirt. I have and unlikeable character should be the t shirt, I have from this because you know, in the mystery Shawna, this is not a cozy. If if if you want a bunch of happy people, don't like heavy people. It's like. I don't find them. Very interesting. I liked I drink beer with them. Even you're right. But the point is the point in this book is flawed. People are more interesting. They may not be nice. They may have nice moments. But they absolutely people with secrets are more interesting than people who, you know. You know? Santa clubs a store. Santa claus. Who has some deep dark secret is much more interesting to me than the store Santa Claus. Who is nothing, but was an uncle Donald Trump's away. More interesting to Barack Obama. Do you like it or not? I'm not that's not a political statement way. More interesting. This must have been. I mean, it did take you for years to right? Yeah. I took me for that. She didn't have a publisher. And all that. But I was lazy. But you must have you've created and start in in bleak harbor of very interesting. I don't think it gets to you. It's near the end research to tell the history of this. Of this Joseph Esteve's who came there from Boston in eighteen sixty eight to found this town in the the matriarch in the book, who is the grandmother. Let's tell people what it's about at the beginning. A fifteen almost sixty. There's a hard book to talk about without giving too much away. Dan. Danny Peters is fifteen years old. He's gonna turn sixteen. Yes. He gets kidnapped. He's autistic. He's autistic. He's a special kid. Yeah. And he's not a cuddly disabled kid like in many in in a special needs kid like in a lot of novel sees Danny's little shit. Yeah. And. And he's smart and he's obsessed for certain things. Greg dragonflies is one of them and the cubs. He loves cubs. And Danny is born into a family of of great wealth the bleak. They came to this to this town. Came to south western Michigan in the eighteen sixties and Joseph ESTES bleak. Dug out a swamp and build a timber mill. And then a steel mill and a newspaper in the, you know, he's one of the great entrepreneurs of that time, you know, there's all those tests. Sure, sure, I'm doing I'm writing working on a story right now that involves Aurora Aurora Illinois, a suburb, western Chicago, and I was reading same guy just affect the guy's name is Joseph. No if some other name, but yeah, it is found in Iran. He said I'm going there. And I'm going to build a town. And he did he built this town on the river there. And so, you know, and as often happens the later generations this. Yeah. They screw it all these skirt all up. Yeah. That is as often happens, and is usually and Danny is left there too. Suffer a hint. Deal. One of the one of the interests of one of these sort of repulsive elements of the book are it's not overdone at all are. Text messages that pepper that pepper the action some of them. I think you get get serve increasingly disturbing. You have until the end of the week, then I'll be at your door v day between us for now. And then even after the kidnapping the kidnapper asks for a very odd number, and then he upset number by two million dollars later on when you realize might as well because he knows that both parents are having their own particular aside from the kidnapping you can talk about that. Pete runs of marijuana dispensary in Michigan. Pizza pizza. Former grains trader. A lot of traders. He was a traitor in Chicago. And you know, he was good. And then he wasn't that good. And so he ends up putting his money into. A medical marijuana open to practice and bleak harbor thinks this is going to be easy. It's not that easy. It's like any business. It's a hard business. I've actually written about this for business leisure. Sure difficult business, and he ends up trying to find easy ways to fix things and that gets into can't tell he can't tell Kerry his wife can't tell her about it because she didn't want to come to bleak harbor to do this in the first place and carries got her own issues carries got rolling will carries. A fascinating again. Nice. The nice is a word that we should never mentioned again on the show, but carries got her own problems with a with a boss of hers who is who is doing the sweets add things and to think of this idea back, right, right? What happens if Kerry and her boss, but then she no long before does some things about her boss. Her boss would not like more people. He's a logistics guy. There are many of these a lot of logistics firms in Chicago. And he's a he's a he's a big time logistics guy in Chicago, and he's supposed to be moving drains widgets. And he's moving some other stuff that carry happens to find out about. Yeah. Pete gets involved in some mugs, the classic unsavory. Carried another word. I hate unsavory. But when you're do a nice word for. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Due plots these or or do you do loosely plant them? It seems to me there is such a a strong narrative drive to this book that certain parts of it seemed to and I'm not trying to assume the way you write, but some parts of it are so forceful that I think that if it was planted on your taking little notes about characters that it would not be so forceful. Well. Short answer. Rick is I don't outline or plot. Yup. I sorta no it's going to happen. And then I let it go. And then as I'm going. You know, I'm writing the next book. Now, let's also and carbon. So I'll get so far along, and I start to make notes about what I have to change earlier to accommodate what I'm gonna do next. And then there are characters who I don't know are going to be important. And then they become important. So there's one in bleak harbor. His name is courts. Q U A RT's like the multifaceted stone stone and courts was was supposed to be in the book for approximately two pages one scene with his boss. Randall pressman, who's the logistics guy? We talked about a minute ago. And but then he gets there, and I'm like, well, I have to know little bit about the guy. What's his history? And then I figure out his history. And I'm like, okay. Well, we're going to put them in one more CNN next thing, you know, court major character. Oh, no. I doubt if he's Marcus Saiki, my friend goes why don't you make the whole book about courts? I'm like, dude, I'm done. But the book I'm not rewrite the book bring him in this next. Four years now. Right. It's quite an accomplished. We gotta take another commercial break. The book is bleak harbor the website, which will give you all of Brian's working on his schedule of events and all sorts of other things is Brian B R Y A N G R U L E, Y dot com. Do check out that website. I can't buy the long-sleeved t-shirts there. But somewhere I'm gonna find an old survey Shanley t-shirt that I might even get a bleak harbor t shirt. Yeah. Book books now. And when because there was times or you were maybe on the way to call him beta like what was the low. What was the worst? What was the worst part of the season? I think the worst part was being held in limbo for that time period of about a month where you know, I'm working myself back into it. And I'm like like, yeah, you can be back in two weeks and then another two weeks pass and you'll be back in another two weeks. You know, it's not improving and just kind of getting hung out there. Like, you know, I'm ready to play. I'm ready to play. I feel like I can go, and then things aren't working out and turned a little bit fed a little bit more clarity. When they said, hey, you're you're out. You know, you need to have surgery. This is what this the route. We gotta go. I kind of have peace with that. I know you, and that's when we finally exchanged numbers and the rest is history. Your first day it was to applebees. Correct. It was that would be stole. My my buddy, David light. He's car. And because I didn't own one times. I always guard. You know, made a smell good have made it made. It seem like I I was doing big things. I wanted to make fun of you for that. And then I remembered I dated a girl in grad school, and I was probably twenty to our first day. It was the olive garden. I thought it was I thought the olive garden was nice I twenty early onto the olive garden. No big night. No doubt Applebee's was was big for us. So okay. Let's talk about the grizzlies. You played twelve games last season. The team was bad enough to pick number four. How for you? Personally. I saw a couple of times. I know how frustrated we're like how bad was it? And then just now deal with the the struggles of the season as far as our team and just focus on that..

Harry, Bosch and his newest character. Rene Ballard in his latest novel dark sacred night. Michael conley? Welcome to the podcast. Thanks for having me on you have had an interesting career as a crime reporter in a crime author. And I understand it was the great new are author Raymond Chandler who started it all for you. Exactly read his books will actually I should back up and say I watched a movie based on his book the longer by. By the Elliott Gould version deli version, which I love and some people call a some Chandler bureaus calling a bomb nation, but I loved it. It led me to his books. This is one is in college. And when I finished reading his books, I said, I want to be a writer, and I want to say that in one of the books you actually name to character Chandler was that your nod to hero. It was it was like a double nod because I also worked eight times in the Chandler family. Brought that newspaper to great heights back when they were at great heights. And so as I knew it could be taken button, depending on who's reading as a nod to one or the other where you also a fan of Dashiell Hammett, and some of the other no oral thirds are what's mostly Raymond Chandler that. I've definitely read it all Chandler was the one something about the way his sardonic cynical yet hopeful view of Los Angeles. And I read these before I'd ever even been Los Angeles captured me so yeah, dash won ham. It's like, you know, one of the best James. I'm Cain so forth. I've I've read them all but Chandler is the one that over my life. I've gone back and re read and be read and reread you eventually ended up going into journalism. Instead was that sort of your way of hedging your bets and making sure you could still pull a paycheck. Yeah. I mean. You know, I was when when this when the Weipa went off and sit and I knew I wanted to be a writer. I happen to be a major in engineering, which is not really the the best educational path. So I went home and talked to my parents about it. And and it wasn't like I went home and said I want to be a writer. I said I wanna be a crime writer. I wanna write these kind of novels 'cause Chandler was one made me inspired me to say that. But I've been reading them veraciously for a long time. I had been a witness in a to a crime when I was sixteen and I spend a night with detectives and that led me to on the path reading crime novels. So I finally get to Chandler about three years later. And that's when my world is rocked. And I go home and say this is what I wanna do. And so my father said, the usual path is probably like English lit and maybe become a teacher while you try to right? And so on and so forth he said, but if you're very spoon. Acidic about this. Why don't you get into police stations courtrooms?.
