He was the youngest of six children. However these six children were from two different families so it was a total brady bunch family. The mom had the dad had some chip is the only one by the mom and dad's chip was from carol brady and my carole and mike gap broker. That's how this works. So he was brought home in a christmas stocking because they called him the there he was there little. Christmas miracle is what they said. So who is the lady that does the babies in the weird thing and get it done. He's that yeah. Yeah so kind of like that. Brought him home in a stocking so he lived with his family and milton and milton is a pretty small. I mean it's a population of about ten thousand. The town known for a few things. It's known for whiting field navy airbase known for an awful climate in fact one of its nicknames. It's hell town. It's known for an awful briar patch. Oh chip had a great family but tragedy struck when he was just seven years old and he lost his mother to poor health. After this chip became morbidly obese which lead to bullying at school he became even more withdrawn than he already was. He was already a shy head. This made him go in even more. He diagnosed with juvenile diabetes elementary school and he required daily. Insulin shots occur in high school chip began to play the saxophone and was actually really good at it. Awesome that going for him. Chip was very close with his father and they had a bond that the other siblings just didn't have the in fact ship would come back to live with his father on and off throughout his life. He had odd jobs here and there but no real career loved to garden. He loved antiques. He loved fishing. His father was sent to an assisted living facility after suffering a stroke in april of two thousand fifteen and at the time chip was working at a denny's diner about twenty miles from the house. He was living on his own in his father's house and he had a puppy named harley. Oh that sets are seen curl around. This time. chip began hanging out with people that his family would consider bad influences. Who introduced him to drugs and he started binge drinking his dad reggie once found him passed out behind the wheel of a car and made him go live with his oldest sister. Laura for a little bit. She tried to get him to a but that didn't last long as we know a lot of people relapse when they are starting to try and get clean in november of twenty fifteen chip met a young lady named tanya rios and i see tan ya not tanya only because it's spelled t. a. i n. y. Train you tena gonna say tanya. She ended up living with him by january so two months later they meet. She moves in with him and remember. His dad is in assisted living but they're living the dad's house all he told his family was that he was dating someone and that she was a nurse who was out of work and the family started noticing chip style changing like his personality was changing the clothes. "So what's the What's the biggest challenge? I mean, is it what's different about doing it the way you're doing versus just traveling around the world and staying in hotels other than you know, having to change your own sheets. Yeah. Well, wherever we are, is our home and that's the way it's going to be pretty. Some lucky participants who end up you know, getting almost a year to travel. Thanks. So that's kind of part of living locally as a volunteer where we can. Where's here? Where are you right now? We're in time ago. Okay, honey, we live on the eighth Air France. Wow! And which part of France by the way. Just outside of Paris and are one of our daughters was there with the family, All right. And my last question for you. "Hello and welcome to the files. I'm your host. your elena. Sometimes known by plume fiorella demaria. I'm a writer of crime. Fiction and historical novels and an incorrigible bibliophile. It's wonderful to be making a program on pretty much my favorite subjects books on my show. We'll be introducing you to books. Kasich and contemporary that. You must read should enjoy reading or should not touch with an eleven foot bargepole once a month. I will also be doing my special edition. Children's book show involving younger is talking about an sharing beth favorite books. It's holy week and not a moment too soon. This has been one of those lenten seasons. That feels like it's gone on forever. Please ignore the rain. Hammering on the windows behind me. Nothing says an english spring like a rain storm. But i was remembering with. The children lost easter just the other day because of course las easter we were in lockdown. We couldn't go anywhere near off families. It was the first easter ever. We had not spent with our extended family. My children's only concern was that they wouldn't be an easter egg hunt which of course they're worse and to try to cheer them up. Because i thought well it's a bit rawson having eastern lockdown and i wanted to be memorable. I dressed up as a giant staff. Do and run around the house singing easter hymns and the children did say that they would remember that they would certainly remember it whether they'd remember it on a therapist's couch or whether they remembered fondly is anybody's guess but it was certainly memorable. I don't think i'll have to go to quite those lengths this time because we still have some restrictions but we in a support bubble with my family so it will be as close to normal easter as possible and we can go to mass and stuff like that. I have three gems to share with you today. I was trying to decide in my mind which classic to share with you because they were too. I really really wanted to feature. And i couldn't decide between the two i practically had to toss a coin but to begin with a book. That is a little bit personal for me which i found brought me a little bit closer to a chapter of my inlaws family. History that i'd never really explored very much. And that's a book called the crew and it's about the crews of nights bomas who flew across europe over germany. Doing those incredibly dangerous ops during the second world war and the reason it feels very personal is because my husband's great on who john was very keen. Filmmaker an amateur filmmaker which was quite unusual at the time. Because there's not like now where people just pull out a phone and start filming. You knew you needed the equipment you needed to know what you doing. And he made these. It'll films and he made a series of beautiful very touching films of his girlfriend who he called topsy and she's a classic nineteen thirties beauty. You know that curly hair and the the summer frock you know. She looks terribly demure ab- slightly naughty. You know she's obviously enjoying posing for the camera and the last film he did showed him receiving his call up papers to join the rif and he writes on a blackboard to be continued. And there's a final short of the two of them kissing and tragically. The story was not to be continued because one night as was so often the case he and the rest of his crew took off from the rif base at which they were stationed in the east of england and off they flew and they never came back and it was not known what had happened. They were simply the whole crew missing presumed lost but very recently disa- couple of years ago sadly too late for topsy and indeed great uncle jones sister a charity in the netherlands. Instead of archaeological wartime archaeological group uncovered the wreckage of great aunt. Who john's plane and there's the number. They will have a specific number so they were able to confirm that it was definitely his plane. In the archives there were the names of all the crew members who from all over the place from england from canada. Australia i think a concord and they started excavating the wreckage of this plane. And of course the bodies long disintegrated but they found a few little bits and pieces like great hongkou. John's cigarette case. He had a silver cigarette case that have been given to him. As a birthday present. And there was engraved john michael campbell. It was just so moving. We watched the documentary the mini documentary where they brought this wreckage up to the surface where it had crashed and they were able to piece together what had happened. They received a direct hit when straight down. The never stood a chance. The only saving grace really the small mercy. what's that they wouldn't have suffered. It would have been pretty quick. Not all pilots died quickly with fires breaking out and things like that..
