Biden to enter Oval Office with no confirmed Cabinet members

"Oval Office without a single member of his Cabinet confirmed by the Senate, and that is highly unusual. Today's hearings began for five of his choices. CBS is Nancy Cordes reports tonight from Capitol Hill. Do you solemnly swear to get? It's another sign of the changing of the Guard confirmation hearings today for one third of the Biden Cabinet who signaled a major break from the past four years? Climate change is a critical problem facing the country. When he comes to intelligence, there is simply no place for politics ever. Ali 100, New Yorkers nominated to lead Homeland Security said he'll immediately halt construction of President Trump's border wall. Would you tear down parts of the wall, would you Stop the construction that's going on. I have not looked at the question of what we do with respect to the wall that already has been built, and I look forward to studying that question. Understanding the costs and benefits. Of doing so. Secretary of State nominee Tony Blinken is a long time Biden foreign policy adviser. Would you tell the people in a caravan coming toward America? I would say, Do not do not come. Yeah, I think that's a good message. Former Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen, tapped to lead Treasury argued the best remedy for a covert racked economy is more stimulus right now. With interest rates at historic lows. The smartest thing we can do is act big defense pick Lloyd Austin vowed to root out any extremism in the military. The job of the Department of Defense is to keep America safe from our enemies. We can't do that if some of those enemies lie within our own ranks. Democrats say their top priority is to get the homeland security nominee confirmed, especially after what we saw here at the Capitol two weeks ago. But today, Missouri Republican Josh Holy announced he would block a swift confirmation because he didn't like what New Yorkers had to say. About immigration, Nora.

Should You Offer Your Nanny A Raise When You Have Another Child?

"Did you. You offer your nannies a raise. When a second kid came into the picture yes and no i see yes because at least Especially back then when our second kid came into the picture fairly soon after her nanny had started with us. I was pregnant with him when she came so she kinda knew she was signing for kids. We did yearly raises in those days. And when i say because at some point we hit kind of a little bit of a ceiling where we just started adding other things like increased bonuses and increase vacation time at cetera. I wouldn't say we added specifically because of the second kid but we did increase Compensation anyway and i will say that you know just like for a parent sometimes. It's helpful for a caregiver to have the toddler out of the house for part of it so they can focus on the other kid especially if they're going to be doing some housework duties as well so back then. When annabelle was three in cameron was one that was probably one of the hardest parts of her job. Say harder than it is now especially because for the most part all three go to school for a significant portion of the day. But i had alan in preschool at age three even if it was just for four or five hours that really broke up the de for time that she would just have with a newborn time in part. When that new warriner one-year-old even would be napping so just took the load off a little bit so sometimes it doesn't you know it's not an either or plus particularly in non cova times preschools had have benefits to something to consider. That might make things easier for your caregiver. If you're adding more than one can. Yeah i mean. I would say like in general with any. I mean you employ in your work worker at home as well. i mean. anytime someone's job responsibilities increase substantially than than raise would probably be appropriate in our case we had always wound up in a cycle. We are hiring new people. Like as i was pregnant with the next baby so it was like. Yeah i like you the they were signing on in negotiating with that in mind knowing the number of children that would be involved in the job and then currently we actually are any wanted to trim hours a little bit over the past year. And that's that's been fine. Because michael and i are both working at home right now. I'm not travelling anywhere. And so and we'll we'll see how that all pans out when when the pandemic is over people travel again but but for now it's it's been okay

Alexei Navalny: Poisoned Putin critic Navalny to be kept in custody

"Kelly. Alex Sandoval, Knee. Russia's most prominent political opposition leader, is back in Russia last August. You may recall he was poisoned with a lethal nerve agent. Of only was airlifted to Germany for treatment. He nearly died, but he vowed to get better. And when he did to return to Russia yesterday, he made good on that promise and was immediately arrested for violating the terms of an earlier suspended prison sentence. Was quickly tried in front of a judge inside a room at a police station outside Moscow. Will world leaders are condemning Navalny's detention. They're calling for his release from or on how the events of these past couple days have played globally. We're joined by Ambassador Michael McFaul. He served as U. S ambassador to Russia during the Obama administration ambassador. Welcome back Makes driving. So I was struck by current Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeting that he is deeply troubled by Navalny's arrest and by incoming national security advisor Jake Sullivan tweeting that the attack on the volley is outrageous and calling for his immediate release. Making this that rarest of things. I think agreement between the outgoing and incoming administrations. What might this tell us about how this could backfire against Putin possibly isolate him further on the world stage? Well, I noticed those two tweets, too. I also noticed two dozen tweets from Secretary Pompeo about China on just one about Navalny on guy was glad to see that Jake Sullivan did speak out. He's found his voice on Twitter already. As the new national Security advisor. I think there's a lot of consensus about what is happening internally inside Russia in the United States between Democrats, Republicans and our allies in Europe on I think it's right to speak out about it. Remember, President Trump? Never did he's got he's got one day left. So maybe we're gonna hear something tomorrow but not on Twitter look like but not on Twitter, but not a single word ever about By human rights violations in Russia. So that's the good news. The harder news is, what do you do about it? That you can affect things inside? I'm optimistic that the new team is thinking very hard about that issue. Not just statements but actions. But you know, it's hard. It is hard to bring about domestic change in other countries. Why do you think Navalny went back? He knew he would be arrested right away. I know Alex involving he had no choice. In his view his job. His mission in life is to end what he considers a criminal regime in Russia. They tried to kill him is you just reported hey, then called up one of the killers by the way, and got them to confess that they did. He went to get treatment, but he was not going to elect Putin chase him out of his own country. Remember, Mr Navalny is a very patriotic man, and he was not going to allow them to do that. He had to go back on, you know, to fight this regime. The Kremlin has denied poisoning Navalny, I I know from having interviewed you and past that you do not buy that. I do wonder now that the attention of the world is on navalny. Does that protect him in any way? Does it make it harder for those holding him? To mistreat him and think maybe nobody will notice. It does when the world watches it helps people like Navalny and other countries around the world. I think there's no doubt about that. Um, it also means that it raises the stakes for other countries to do something about it right. I mean Putin's playing a game of chicken right now, with the new Biden administration. In many ways they were walking in Their first major foreign policy crisis, and he's waiting to see Do they just put in a few sanctions and then move on to other things? Or do they do something radically different? It will be fascinating to watch and, of course, Russia. I'll just note briefly, as has in past brushed off criticism, says Western leaders. They're just trying to distract from their own domestic was do they have in a few seconds? Ambassador Do they have something of a point there? No, We gotta get our democracy in order at home, but we could walk into his gum at the same time. Two wrongs do not make a right. Michael McFaul. He is former U. S ambassador to Russia and author of From Cold War, Too Hot Peace, Ambassador McFaul. Good to Speak with You. Thanks

It's 5 48 on Wall Street live from the Bloomberg Interactive Brokers Studios. This is Bloomberg Daybreak. And as president elect, Biden continues with efforts to flesh out his eventual government. President Trump is can Tin Ewing not to concede the election and to fight the election result not just in court but potentially pressuring state legislatures to override the vote and declare him the winner in their states From or We're joined by Professor Wendy Schiller, chair of the political science department at Brown University. And I guess the latest example we saw of that professor is President Trump inviting the top Republican leaders of the Michigan State Legislature to the White House. They say they talked about infrastructure, but there was some concern that the president might put pressure on them. To declare electors in his favor. What do you make of how the president has been resisting the transition thus far? Well, Nathan? I mean, obviously you're an incumbent. You run for reelection, you lose. That's hard to take. You know, I understand that people didn't you know have opinions about Donald Trump in particular, but any incumbent president that loses its? It's a rare thing, and it's hard to take. But this point, it's really the Republican Party. It's really Mitch McConnell. It's Kevin McCarthy. It's a number of other people. Who are enabling this distortion of what we typically expect from an election when the victory is quite clear. You know, this is not 2000, right? This is not what it was an open seat anyway. It's a situation where to uphold even just the basic faith in basic elections and the Republicans every day that this goes on, you know, Trump's leaving. He's only one way the other. It may take a while, but he's leaving. You know the Republicans. They're saying they think what we did really well in the elections, we won't suffer any consequences. I'm not so sure about that. The longer this goes on, so in some ways, trumpet sort of carving his own path, and he's not necessarily gonna help the Republicans. I think in the short term in Georgia, maybe but in the long term towards 2022. Now we are starting to hear from some more Republicans, including yesterday on meet the press Republican Senator Kevin Cramer of North Dakota, saying that while the president's within his rights to challenge legally the result of the election, he should at least begin a transition. Do you see that sort of trick? All of Republican sort of change of message having any impact on the president. Well, I don't think it really starts to matter till next week. Right? We have certification today for Pennsylvania. That's going to happen. We understand such very state will do that Nirvana looks like it will certify tomorrow at a couple other Trump states. North Carolina will certify And then next week we get close to the Arizona certifying. For example, Michigan might be a question because one person on one commission or two people on on a commission who are Republicans may say we won't certify which causes legal problems, which will delay certification in Michigan and remember that's undermining The entire electoral system. That's not just sort of trump playing around. That's undermining the entire system when Biden won by more than 150,000 votes in Michigan, so these air warning signs right. This is something that says this could get out of control, even for incumbent Republicans. This gets out of control when you sanction that kind of behavior, so I think the transition probably won't happen until The head of the G s. A signed the peace paper that says it has to happen. What this points out is that there are problems and flaws in this system that we have right states have different ways of doing this, which is ridiculous. It's the national vote for the president of states. There wasn't any justification except found in the Constitution that states can run their systems differently. Recertification so they're bigger lessons I think to take from this. Besides just the fact that we have a president refuses to concede. What kind of reforms could be put in place when you have a state by state election that has been going on in this fashion for decades. Well, you know, I should see him with this before the call, and I'm thinking I think we passed four constitutional amendments in 10 years between 1910 in 1924 constitutional amendments. We were end up repealing one of them almost Parisian, but nonetheless, you know, this country can change the Constitution when it feels like it needs to. Now, that's really unlikely in this environment, but there's no question At the push to reform at least certification of presidential election results, you know, should come out of this process because it's so destabilizing to have a circumstance where you have the president power, unwilling or refusing to concede and give up power. Luckily, I think for the country that the president elect has a lot of experience in Washington, he knows how to find the Oval Office. He knows how it works. It's still it's putting the company than the country at risk. The bigger thing is that people aren't believing the result, and that's a big No. That's happened before in some ways, but not on this scale. So I think that's the wake up call to any incumbent politician who runs an election where they want to be declared the winner only about 15 seconds left here. But is there any possibility that state legislators could ignore vote counts and choose electors for the president? As his team seems to be indicating it once today? Oh, Well, Michigan could ultimately do it. The governor would appoint electors and state leads that you appoint electors in Congress would have to choose which puts the ball in the court of the lame duck Congress on you'd have to sort of see yourself. How far are the Republicans willing to go to destabilize the system? I don't think they're willing to go that far. Professor Wendy Schiller. Always good having you on Thank you. So much for your insights. Professor Wendy Schiller is chair of the political science department at Brown University. Karen. All right, Nathan. Thank you. It's fine. 54 On Wall Street. "Michael bar this is one where get me all right thank you Michael it is five nineteen on Wall Street we're live from the Bloomberg interactive brokers studios this is Bloomberg daybreak and we are joined now by economists Dennis guardsmen the publisher of the gardening newsletter and Dennis it's a pleasure thanks so much for joining us this morning looking forward to picking through your brain and figuring out what is your big take away from twenty nineteen what do you think I think the big take away from twenty nineteen is that everybody has been terribly bearish about the commodity market in yet commodities are starting to turn rather demonstrably to the upside gold going better steals doing better good oil obviously is doing better and the grain of any of the saucer doing better I think there's something going on here that a lot of people are missing I think it's going to be the edge for the for going into twenty twenty I think stock of prices may may falter a bit after this the this year end rally has run its course the commodity prices I think of the has made a multi year low in August the demonstrably stronger prices the price level as we go through the rest of this year and on into next year we say something is going on here what do you think the cause was for that well I think that the monetary authorities in in in the industrialized nations are all the leading expansionary policies they have no choice other set is adding to its balance sheet the bank of England is adding to its balance sheet the C. B. specially under Mr guard is adding to its balance sheet I think the the amount of reserve that are being added by the the monetary authorities are are are finally making their way one into stock prices and now are making their way to quantify so I think it's expansionary policies on the part of the monetary authorities that are leading money prices higher clearly that sounds like something you might be might think would influence what's going on in twenty twenty what may be coming up but do you see a similar influences coming from say brexit or the presidential election coming up well I think brexit is run its course I'm not sure there's much was due to the data from that if anything there is down might be a tad more confusion as we make our way through twenty twenty and for the end of the the the the trade agreements that have to be reached between Britain and the content but the I think most of the illnesses of brexit is behind us better news the for the for the U. K. lies ahead what was the the second question the presidential election coming up in November I'm not a big fan of the president trump's I I think its policies on trade and tariffs are are absolutely in a in in there is just an inordinately inaccurate and bad and although I did vote for a man on a given the the circumstances and certain that can that currently prevail and given the candidates to the Democrats have come up with thus far I I guess I'll have to look for him again I think the impeachment process for its course by the end of January that'll that'll be all this by the by the time we get in the middle of February but I think the markets understand that unless the Democrats over the differences with a slate of candidates Mr trump will be once again the president added states and that I will find a little bit more some because of his trade policies but other than that I'm I'm I'm not too concerned do you see any other outstanding risks for twenty twenty perhaps besides straight what is the monetary authorities and I explained earlier on or or the reason why the cloudy markets turning higher I would hope that the monetary authorities will continue to be expansionary the my great fear that they may turn the other way that I think that's the odds of that occurring are are relatively minimal so right now the and my biggest concern other than rising commodity prices and if your logged commodities it's one thing is that too many late comers to the stock market too many neophyte so many beginners are are throwing up their hands and and and like loss of John the flame of buying stocks and I find that a bit disconcerting you have about a minute and a half here and I just wanna talk about you for a little while if we could you have retired the garden letter so what does the twenty twenty hold for you well it is a little concerning it is what has the final for the past thirty five years I've got up every morning and a one o'clock to to to produce a seven eight or nine pages of what I hope is in cycle economics and and and everyone saw that his humor and I put my own money at risk when I write in my newsletters what I do for myself I'll continue to write a bi weekly I think that's what I want to do a couple box podcast I like to continue to to be is I will still be involved every day and my own account of the markets but at seventy years old and my my right hand is getting a little bit tired of typing becoming I have to speak to it every morning as they come on guy get in the game it's taken me six hours to produce what use take four hours so it's time to retire the the the Garmin letter but I look forward to being in the markets on a daily basis I look forward to being able to still be on Bloomberg radio Bloomberg television from time to time I think I still have something reasonably intelligent to say about what the capital markets are doing on the general on on a daily basis and we look forward to it as well Dennis Cartman economist and publisher of the retiring garden letter thank you very much for taking the time with us this morning we do appreciate it much more coming up on Bloomberg daybreak let's take a quick check of the markets as in B. futures wanting higher at two tenths of a percent higher Dow futures all mon quite three tenths of a percent higher nasdaq futures right at three tenths of a percent higher and NYMEX crude oil trading at sixty one eighty eight a barrel crude Brent crude at sixty eight twelve a barrel comex gold.

"Countries Michael bar this is number okay Michael thank you it's five forty nine on Wall Street and live from the Bloomberg interactive brokers studios this is Bloomberg day break we want to get more now on the simmering tensions in Hong Kong police there are now warning the city is on the brink of a total breakdown after a second day of extraordinary violence in the Hong Kong financial district Bloomberg's Karen lead joins us from Hong Kong now on the phone and we talked earlier Karen about how unusual it is for this kind of unrest to reach this particular part of Hong Kong as opposed to the government center what is the latest that you're seeing now yeah well this is the second day that we see needs flare up in central it's the heart of the tourists and business district of quite a ritzy area well now we really haven't seen much action there on the today for the second day in a row we thought your gas fired right in the heart of it people fleeing and this came a few hours after Carrie lam spoke again it's her second press conference in twenty four hours and she keeps urging calm she says she still wants the whole district elections that are coming up in the next couple of weeks that would be the first city wide vote since protests erupted here five months ago and I have really become a symbol of what Hong Kong can maintain its level of democracy and there's been a lot of fears in recent days after filing increased over the last week that maybe the government would use that to delay or even cancel the votes of some of those fears were laid and then hours later you another square up like this by yesterday and more worried we saw classes in other areas of the city so really Ealing hearing people on shore what going to happen tomorrow yeah you talk a little bit more about the potential political impact here with these district elections coming up in just a couple of weeks is there a real risk that these elections could be put off for even canceled you know the government is able to do whatever it wants and I I think that if things continue in this way the fears that they would move to do that are only going to grow it was a bit reassuring that you came out and said you hope they still have them on at the same time Hong Kong police are saying that the city is on the brink testing protesters used bows and arrows on the university campuses and hold heavy objects and bridges about the road and and then China which which back billion government has also come out so you know I think it's the I think it's a very precarious situation there have been no move by the government to suggest that they would delay or even cancel that boat but that is something a lot of people here are watching with great concern we we seem to have the cycle whether the big questions that hover over the protests for a long time over the summer it was how long will it go then it was will China sending the PL a work week more direct action and right now it will we still be able to hold elections that have really become a bastion of democracy Beijing took over in nineteen ninety seven let's talk about what the protesters are looking for here what moves are they making are they making any further demands you know it's interesting they stuck to their demands pretty closely and they're they're not calling as much for Carrie lam to step down but they are still calling very heavily for an independent inquiry into police violence is too aggressive tactics the state police have used for the first time I when you have instances like yesterday when you have a live rounds being fired and a protester being shot one last week we thought you indict near a police dispersal dot only serve if you will that cycle and to keep make people even angrier and then you see the kind of action that we thought the day this is all a bit of a vicious cycle but Carrie lam coming out yesterday and she said you know violence is not going to get you your demands and it's not going to work and not really signaled that she's not going to back down the protesters signaling but they're not going to back down the two sides really seeming to dig in more and more as we go through so just quickly is there any sign that we could see some form of compromise by either side only a few seconds left here uncle now no I think that you know this is a new kind of level of violence that we haven't seen in five months and if it continues maybe that would move one side or another to concede on on a point but until now we haven't seen any fine but they will remember externally with the very latest for a song from Hong Kong again Karen thanks for the update turn Moscow all right Nathan thank you it is five fifty three on Wall Street it's time for the Bloomberg
