MLB teams extend beer sales after pitch clock shortens games

"Thanks to the pitch clock, the action is moving much faster at Major League Baseball games, but it also means a little less time for fans to enjoy a frosty adult beverage. To combat that time crunch at least four teams, the Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers have extended alcohol sales through the 8th inning this season. Others, like the Miami Marlins and New York mets still have 7th inning cutoffs, but haven't ruled out making changes. Teams historically have stopped selling alcohol after the 7th inning. New York Mets vs Miami Marlins game ends in controversy

"New york. Yesterday we saw one of the biggest controversies early in the early season. The mets in the marlins. What a game. This was in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jeff mcneil came to the plate for the mets with new york. Down by run may play mcneil to pull the outfield three. And one the count bass to the belp. Here's the pitch swing a fly ball to right field. Well hit to fall back still going at the track. That's gone mcneil. Doesn't he leads off the bottom of the night with the game tied holder. And this baby's all even to the mets would go on and load the bases two outs michael conforto at the plate. Here's the call. On the marlins radio network now the one to forte three called it got him in the arm. No now they're going to send them to first base. He hit him with the pitch and the ball games over the opening up our initially signaled strike three then he said no it hit them. Don mattingly's out to argue. The mets are celebrating. Walk off three two win. Glenn geffner nine forty. Winz here was the call on wcbs. Mets radio network now the to pitch breaking ball in their strike. Three call victim on the arm. The game is over. It was called a strike initially but then it was ruled that the ball hit conforto. Michael gets to first base and on the mets television network. Those guys did a great job on essen. Spring Training 2021: MLB's Plan To Prevent Outbreaks

"Jeff. What's the plan around health and safety to get to something resembling normal in spring training. I mean there's a hundred page document that lays out an extremely granular fashion. What baseball is trying to do to prevent outbreaks and you remember pablo. We talked about last year. We saw with the miami marlins with saint louis. Cardinals teams are susceptible to that. I will say a very positive thing. That happened already is major league. Baseball's first round of intake testing where they had four thousand three hundred thirty six tests. They didn't give the number of tests subjects but among those tests only thirteen came back positive. It's a very very small number. If there is an outbreak pablo it would not surprise me at all considering the way that people at spring training or around one. Another so much but They are abiding by distancing protocols. They're limiting the number of players. Nobody's allowed to go out. And the hope is that over time as players get vaccinated that will change but for the time being. It's very similar to the way that they operated toward the end of last season.

"Miami Marlins general manager Kim Hang made history as the first woman and the first Asian American general manager. Major League Baseball. And shattered one of the few glass ceilings that exist in major league baseball for women. She stands on the shoulders of another woman named F A Manly who 85 years ago, triumphed as a baseball executive and became the first and only woman to envy inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. A new book called Baseball's Leading Lady. F. A Manly and the Rise and Fall of the Negro Leagues. Author Andrea Williams tells the remarkable story of F A Manly, the owner and co manager of the Newark Eagles, a team she cultivated into a powerhouse. She also explores manly civil rights activism and the history of American baseball. Andrea Welcome to all of it. Hi. How are you? Good. So let's start with the fact that you are not only a baseball fan, you have worked professionally around the sport. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum know when you first heard about the life and learned about the career of F A manly What jumped out at you? What leapt out at you about her career. Yeah, I think the first thing was just that she had done. It was really just what she was able to accomplish in the thirties and forties. I started working active you them in the summer of 2004. I had just graduated with the sport management degree and By myself, working in a front office on myself, ultimately becoming a general manager of a major league baseball team. I wanted to work at a small market club and, you know, I had my own Moneyball aspirations. But at the time there was no one you know you mentioned in the intro Kim and what? Just becoming the first last year And so, you know, I would always say that. You know, I wanted to be the first but I really thought that Kim would beat me. Um And I don't know. I mean, I do know why it took so long One, but yes, see, Seen F um and what she accomplished back then was was really eye opening because a We didn't really know about it. You know, I just got my job at the museum and Up. Kendrick, who is the president now was giving me a cooler and, you know, I saw her picture in the corner and started asking questions and researching and reading and doing all the things and, Yeah, it was. It was remarkable because she had been owners, um, female owner his team before that they're you know, have been owners and Major League baseball and in the Negro leagues, but she Didn't just only team husband. She really handle the day to day did all the player contracts and negotiations or the equipment and manage the books and did all of the things that a general manager does. And she gave it back there. Open the book with a scene for the 1946 Negro World, Syriza and F Family's team. The North Eagles play and beat the Kansas City Monarchs. Why was this such a pivotal moment in her career and in baseball history? Yeah, it was. It was pivotal because of me. I'm sure I don't think she had. Why? No, she didn't have any. You know, she wasn't a little girl thinking of owning and operating a professional baseball team one day, but everything that she did. She did it to the degree. So if she's in based on now she wants to live. No, it matter that she, you know, Matter of fact celibate like she. She's been struggling. All this part 200 steam, You know, having having a professional team hard anyway, But doing it in black baseball was that much harder. You know, Budgets were tight, You know, they didn't. They didn't have their own stadium, very few black owners on their own stadium, so they were giving up. Hefty portion of gate receipts every single game to the white teams that they rented stadium space from so everything was always such a struggle. And so it was finally like, yes, this is this is what it was all for. It also missed it. Now, when you're the top team, right gate receipts go up because now people want to come see the best of the best to play in that team. Hurt. Here We really go goes on it. Larry Doby, who became the first black player in the American League following Jackie, who was first in the nationally he was on that team, one of efforts players Oh, yeah, It is a big deal. You know, Now that we see that, um Major League Baseball is element you know, has elevated the status of the peace Negro League players. You know that All of those guys were doing it on a professional level, and they were champions. My guess is Andrea Williams. They've her book is baseball's leading lady F A manly and the rise and fall of the Negro leaves. So in a little back background on efforts was born in Philadelphia, 18 97, and if you Google her her heritage has been debated for some time. Of and you write in your book that, according to US census records, her mother had at least some black heritage. And she and her mom and her half siblings lived his black Americans. She finds out later that her father Is white as the result of a relationship or affair, I guess how did she live in the world? And what impact did this have on the way she became involved in baseball and worked and lived in baseball. Yeah, As for definitely, um, you know, she took advantage of her fair complexion when she could when she needed to know she didn't interview later in life and talked about how you know if she was traveling alone, she would say in a white hotel or either the white only restaurant. Marlins Name Kim Ng MLB's First Female General Manager

"Huge story today from the world of Sports. The first we have a first Ah Qiming. Who has worked in baseball. Dating back to 1990. She was an intern with the Chicago White Sox. And then she was an assistant general manager with the New York Yankees, And she was insistent general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and she's been interviewing and interviewing, interviewing, and today she became the first general manager. Was a female. Who is also Asian. All of it in Major league baseball history. She's gonna be kind of work for the Miami Marlins. Now I was thinking like Did I probably not gonna be able to get Kim on the air tonight because, you know You might be a little bit busy, but you know, the Chicago Cubs have a Rachel holding. And Rachel was a stud softball player, and she has been with the Cubs now. Ah! As a hitting structure in the minor leagues, and she does a lot of technical stuff. And so I reached out and she was happy to come on. She's tweeting about the happy she was for Cam and she joins us now, Rachel, I know this was an absolutely huge day for you for for Kim for the industry as a whole. Oh, yeah, of course. I mean, I know Kim personally, So you know, no one is more deserving of this job, and all you have to do is look at her resume toe understand that she's Probably overqualified in in a lot of ways, just really, really happy for her proud of the Marlins. Just pretty exciting stuff. Were you expecting this to happen? Once you heard that she was interviewed like this has got to be the one I didn't know she was interviewing. I actually, um maybe I just didn't follow it too closely, But I know her journey has put her in an assistant GM position. A few times, So I figure any time there's a GM opening. She should be considered for it So, but I didn't know she was interviewing personally, But so it was, like a total surprise for me, and I kind of dig it. Yeah, For sure. Like just for those who don't know Kim's career path. Just Ah. Thumbnail shot of it. She was an intern with the Chicago White Sox that started back in 1990. Then she became an assistant general manager for the Yankees and 98 left New York to go to the Dodgers in 2001, as in the same position. Then she interviewed to be the GM for the first time in 2005. Ned Colletti got that gig. And now it's been 15 years trying to become a GM. And here she is, What do you aspire to in the game, right? So you got a sweet position right now. But if you know, 10 years out, if you could pick something, any idea what it would be You know, I get this question a lot. I think with the way that the baseball season has gone first, I'd like to get a full year of baseball under my belt. No without a pandemic or anything else kind of derailing that, but You know, my my passion has always just been being in the cage and influencing players. And so you know, both of those things I'm very, you know, fortunate to have the position that I have right now because it allows me to both of those things. As for where I go from here, I mean, as long as I'm not sitting behind a desk and I get to be interacted with the players and put a uniform on and be in the cage. I think that's zef innately where I wanna be.

Miami Marlins: Derek Jeter, Kim Ng make baseball history

"I want to start with What I mentioned in the update, and that is the hiring of Qiming as the new GM off the Miami Marlins. And just off the top before we get to the historical nature of this and what it means for North American professional sports, moving forward. Just it is interesting to me. You know? Inevitably, the Rockies and the Marlins will be linked. Both coming into the league together. Iraqis and Marlins or not rivals by any stretch of the imagination. It's certainly if you are Iraqis Fan and the Marlins do something good. And the Rockies. Don't You inevitably draw that line between each other. And for the longest time, even though the Miami the now Miami Marlins used to be Florida Marlins have been more successful or tasted Oldham. Its success more than the Iraqis have. For the most part, the Marlins have been one of the worst run organizations. In all of baseball. We all remember Jeffrey Loria. Would buy a championship. Did buy a championship. 97 When Edgar Renteria got that hit off of Jose Mesa and the world Syriza's Sold everybody off. Because the wage bill would have been too high. But through that, by selling off all those players, he ended up getting a lot of really talented young players. Josh Beckett, Juan Pierre Carl Pavano. And they We're able to go win a championship, and then they were all sold off. Couple of ownership changes later, a monstrosity of a stadium poor attendance. Fire sales seemingly every other year incomes Derek Jeter and we thought that it was going to be more of the same. How in the world Is Derek Jeter. Going to Be the And he's not He runs the Marlins that he has a money man behind him. That helped him get the deal done as much money is Derek Jeter has made throughout his career. He can't outright by a major league baseball team himself, so he has kind of a What Silent partner that kind of front him the money, But he's the face. He's the guy that is making all the decisions. And it's something that We really haven't seen too much. And North American pro sports. We've seen plenty become G m's even presidents. And I guess that might be Derek Jeter's technical title, but two Be The owner. Of a team like the true owner, not nine. Justin Timberlake buying Air Peyton Manning's wife, buying shares of the Memphis Grizzlies. Like it's his team. And then they promptly had a fire sale. After he took over. We thought, okay, same old Marlins. Quietly. They have become one of the more Progressive Four thinking which I guess are It basically means the same thing. Progressive four thinking. Competent. Organizations in baseball.

Kevin Cash of the Tampa Bay Rays has won the American League manager of the Year award Cache guided the Rays to a nail best 40 and 20 record in the pandemic shortened season. But cash was widely criticized for pulling a CE left hander Blake Snell in the sixth inning of the decisive sixth game of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Voting by the Baseball Writers Association of America concluded before the playoffs began. Miami Marlins, Jeter Part With Exec Michael Hill After 19 Seasons

"So I don't know what the hell the marlins did over the weekend because they seem to have their first good since what two, thousand three and we were all wondering what Michael Hill was doing still with that job early on in that regime, and now they finally have a good season and they don't bring him back now he's not technically fired his contract expired. They're not renewing it for people who don't know. Michael. Is the GM for the Miami Marlins and what are you guys billy what do we make of this? Like what is doing here where we finally have a good season and then we get rid of Michael. Hill I mean I think before the season no one would have been surprised if Michael, Hill, wasn't there at the end of the season his contract was expiring. You wasn't part of this regime. person they inherited kept. So they you know made them an offer they couldn't come to an agreement and that's it. Now, they'll bring in their own person and that'll be that they did actually make an offer that well. Let me give you some clarification on this because David. Samson. Actually talked to Mike Ryan during during the segment that they do that is always informative and he if you were listening to that actually. What happened is exactly what he said was going to happen which is the Marlins were going to make him You know I'm using this term figurative figuratively, but also literally a token offer because he's one of two black executives in the league with that kind of power it's one of the reasons that he was still there even as they gutted the entire franchise because it wouldn't have looked good and quietly during twenty twenty after a playoff season. They needed to look like he turned down the job. So David Sampson said it was an embarrassing. He predicted an embarrassingly low offer that Michael Hill couldn't accept and that would he would have to walk away from and so what they said in the press release is mutual parting of ways.

NFL will begin testing for COVID-19 on game days, still not considering playoff bubble

"Their covert 19 testing protocols as we all make our way through the pandemic our first time through the lineup, so to speak. We learn as we go. We make adjustments as necessary. Sports leagues continued to do. This Major league baseball first round its regular season with teams playing in their home stadiums, but then decided to move the playoffs. Interest included bubbles and they'll be dealt with an outbreak on the Miami Marlins and cases on other teams and rules became more strict Justus they have in the NFL has more games get postponed because of cases of covered 19. This week, the NFL made more adjustments to its covert 19 protocols. The greatest change, perhaps The NFL will begin to test players, coaches and some staff members on game days, which it hadn't done to this point. But rapid tests will get conducted at team hotels and more bio reference testing. Staff will travel with teams Jared Max Fox

"The Braves lean on their high octane offense to come back and win the opener of the National League Division Series call on F S 11 through nine. We can all do damage. It's pretty incredible. The Braves catcher drills a three run homer in a six run seventh inning for the Braves that turned around a deficit. The power a 95 victory over the Marlins in Houston. Pandemic playoffs: Brewers, Astros in despite losing records

"When you woke up on Sunday morning none of the eight matchups were said I. think that's kind of cool that would be like the the final day of the regular season Lebron Yeah I don't even know who we're playing. That's what it was for every single team yesterday in Major League Baseball your dodgers are going to play the brewers who got in yesterday with the first losing record granted at sixty. Games with the first losing record for a team in the history of the Major League Baseball Playoffs there were twenty nine and thirty one opening round best of three all in the same ballpark what are your thoughts and we couldn't lose I mean you know it. Likely not, but we could because his only three games all they got to do is win two of them, right? So baseball is so weird dodgers obviously you mentioned we got him at home dodger stadium. I don't think that you know I'm sure we're going to roll out Walker Bueller in Kershaw and we're going to do what we need to do to get to the next round But you could lose you know teams could lose you know the beginning of the year, the dodgers and the Yankees were pretty much the favorites to to get to the thing. In the end, but then the pandemic happened then we had to do all of the rescheduling and figure out how many games that went on for so long how many games should they play the only WanNa play this amount, the players, WanNa, play that amount it became a money issue, and now we finally have gotten to the point where October will be playoff baseball. Speaking out, let's go through a couple of interesting storylines after this round by the way, then everything is going to be played at trial sites and eventually the world series will be played at the home of the Texas Rangers and they'll wrap that no. Later than October twenty eighth, they want to avoid the second third. So homefield everybody early, and then we're going to neutral sites, Los Angeles San Diego. Texas and Houston quick thoughts the Yankees of the five seat in the AL, the five seat, the rays of the one-seat. What does the same thing with the dodgers? Right? The Yankees could they take care of business they moved their events they don't they go home whether they a one C or DHCP. It's everybody's even really to be honest with you. Everybody's even Garrett Cole. Start, for the Yankees Chain Bieber for the Indians in for all the money they paid Garrett Cole Shane Beavers had a better year he has in when you look at it, there are no fans in the stands. So there's no home field advantage for anybody you know what's great about not having fans the Houston Astros. Left right. Everywhere they go. They are the sick see the astros have made it in baseball's big off season, they should just get blinked. Every time people bring up the Astros are frown just cheated just blatant just cheat to win. They're taking on the Minnesota twins keys, dodgers will take on the brewers the padres in the playoffs for the first time in fourteen years will take on the Saint Louis Cardinals and the much maligned and I know it's a sixty game season. How about the Miami Marlins under? Derek. Jeter, for everything that they have gone through there and they'll get the Chicago cubs. Yeah. They they. They deserve to being I'm happy for I'm happy for Jeeter because when he? Blew everything up and traded. Call Stan and everybody was like Oh they just care about the money. They're completely trash in the organization, and now they're in the playoffs and they take on. Chicago like you said, one
