Four international airlines return to Miami International Airport

"Aviation analyst, joining us now, Eh? So what? What is the lay of the land out there right now? So that Miami international, Actually he's getting back for international flights. It looks like we are starting to see a little more activity. We are, in fact, the PSA for the second weekend row, Brian reported that we had a day have traveled that more than 800,000 passengers were screened. I think last Monday. We had 862,000 change that were screen and obviously that's a huge increase over the mid April numbers where we had less than 90,000 people a day flying But we're still even at 862,000 good way away from the 2.5 to 3 million people that would normally be flying at this time during a typical normal summer travel season, so Now The good news is, we're we're headed in the right direction. And I think the airlines are trying to find a way and I think they're successfully doing so having passengers feel more comfortable about flying a little bit. By some of the reports that we're saying that come out, saying that it's becoming increasingly more difficult to catch the coronavirus on board an airplane and also with airlines. Absolutely being You know, adamant about their mass policy, and, you know, we've had several situations involving the mass policies that have happened with passengers around the country this week, and it just goes to show that the airlines are not budging at all on that. You know, J related. Something dawned on me recently and that is it. I'm guessing with the protocols that are in place. We don't have a bunch of problems with people that are arriving. To the airport that have cove in 19, or else we would be hearing about it, wouldn't we? Absolutely Now The thing that were a little bit at a disadvantage on is that the airlines don't keep the personal contact information for every passenger so that if we did have a situation on a flight with an airport We would easily be able to contact everyone that that individual came into contact with or was around the center of the disease Control has been, I think for the last two years trying to get airlines to start putting at least basic contact information. Into each passenger name record, and even earlier this spring, again urging the airlines now especially to do so. And the airline said no, they would not, it would cost Too much money for them to do so. And obviously, once we hit the corona virus crisis, having that kind of information would have allowed us perhaps to contain some things a little bit more successfully than we did. Were speaking to J Rally of his website is Jay Ratliff dot com. That's Jay Ratliff dot com. J. Howard fares doing at this point are we seen along with a bit of an increase in traffic and increase in pairs, as well. Actually, we're seeing some fair start to drop. I'm writing emails from people around the country that are looking at fairs from now until 11 months from now, and some are saying, You know, I was looking at this for three weeks ago or two months ago, and it was this rate and now it's here. You think it's a good a good deal, and it was, But by the time that they think about it, it's gone. So the idea is you keep an eye on those city pairs. If you've got a couple of cities that you're looking after your flying between later this fall early next year, and you check in the prices to 75 to 75 No wonder you look at it. It's to 25 jump all over it because of the airlines air rolling that out. They need cash, desperately brain. We've talked about that losing tens of millions of dollars a day. And if some of the advance bookings aren't what they think they should be. Will adjust the fairs and for the savvy traveler, the check and you need to do so is early in the days. You can. That's normally when the new fares were loaded. You might come across. Ah, rather good deal that you can take advantage of. In this, actually, you know, it kind of leads me to wonder. Are they operating at a loss? Just counting on getting to bail out at this point. Um, they're at this point. I'm hoping the cargo can pull him over the top because back in the month of September, many airlines air going more cargo, all passenger cargo passengers. Cargo flights versus passenger flight. So I mean the ideas that United American are still packing as many people on to the airplanes as they can, and they recognize coming into September, which is one of the slowest travel months of the year. We're gonna have a difficult time. So what? We're seeing Brian his adjustments to their future scheduled so that they can lose less money. If certain markets aren't really responding there. They're suspending those flights temporarily until the demand for that. Picks back up airlines right now. Very fluid situation. They're doing everything they can as quickly as they can. To try to predict what may be happening and then adjust their future flight schedule accordingly.

Police officer strikes woman during dispute at Miami airport

"In Florida a Miami Dade police officer has been relieved of duty after video emerged of him hitting a black woman at the Miami International Airport yesterday. Body Cam footage shows the woman arguing with the officer before she moved just inches away from his face, and it escalates from. You just heard the officer hitting the woman. She then falls to the ground as more police. Rush into the frame, the Miami Dade Police Director Alfredo Ramirez says he was shocked and angered by the video and has asked the Miami Dade State Attorney to investigate the use of force Miami Herald reporter. David Ovalles has been covering this and David, the body cam footage begins after the woman and the police officer appear to have already been in something of a dispute. Do? We know how this started. Yes, so the woman is twenty one year old pairs, Anderson she was at the airport and had missed a flight, so she was according to the police yelling at the ticket agent. They call. The police tried to calm her down according to them, you see her yelling at the police officer taunting him about one point. He kind of steps back. Back a little bit, and then she steps into his face, and then he claims it was a head bud, and then he just you know delivers a slap. That is very visceral when you watch it, it is for sure and when you see the video, and from what you can tell from your reporting a in reference to the officer saying that she had headbutted him. Is there any indication that that had happened in? What are you hearing about whether? It would have been an appropriate response to hit her like that. I wouldn't say it's a head, but but certainly one could argue that perception, but as for whether it's inappropriate use of force. It's it's Kinda hard to tell I mean in Florida. The stand your ground law allows anybody not just police officers, no duty to retreat so whether it would be a criminal charge that's going to be debatable. Certainly administrative you talk to police, officers and I've had more than a few reach out to me and say that's absolutely how they're taught. They call it a diversionary strike. Now there's the other element in that. She wasn't wearing a mask and so there's this whole Cova vid angle as well so it's messy. It's not. optically, it looks really really bad but I think there's going to be a lot more nuance to a case like this. Then a few of the other use of force cases we've seen in south Florida in the last couple of weeks. Right and look tensions between black people and white officers has been at the center of so many of these cases that we've been. been talking about. But how are people reacting to this incident? Given the both the woman and the officer are black well. That's one of the sort of grey areas that POPs up in Miami more than than other places because we are such diverse community, white officers here are in the minority. Most are Hispanic and there's a pretty good amount of black officers here to. In this case, the officer Tony Rodriguez is a black Puerto Rican officer, so there is a sort of added element of that you know I. Think a case like this also underscores what a lot of block officers are feeling in terms of tension and conflict block officers really know too well what it's like to grow up black, but also feel very conflicted because they're devoted to their jobs, and they feel like they're being singled out as quote, unquote sellouts, and so it also underscores. A lot of the dynamics in these really precarious times.

"And we haven't been able to get the manifest yet. So you know, what what was aboard the other flights going to South America? We don't know. This is a very puzzling case of if you look on social media and dig into the background of of employees ease of Twenty-one air in associated companies, you see that there are many accounts of employees who follow the Venezuelan opposition in opposition accounts. It follow them as well. So there's certainly some sympathy from employees within the company to the opposition to mother oh in Venezuela. Talk more about the leadership of the company that you investigated based in North Carolina. And explain what you mean when you talk about the links to rendition under President, George W Bush. Will full. Morning than seventy five percent owner of Twenty-one air, and he's got many other companies, but he's been involved out of Miami. I I don't know. Well, the company is registered North Carolina. The operations really are out of Miami. As far as I can tell that's many of the flights have been operating a huge operation center at Miami International Airport. A curious secondary aspect of this story is that the company that consigned the cargo also has ten gentle links to this historical. The Iran contra affair. The head of the of GPS air is a band, knee, Jose, Manuel Calvo, and he. More no has many companies in one of those companies with the partner that he. Used to create this company. Is a company called heavy lift air in that company has a subsidiary out of the UAE that is controlled by an Iranian American named for Seema who also had a role in Iran-Contra. So there's all these circumstantial things, but there's really no smoking gun that I could tell it it. You know, this may be just circumstantial are you reporting? This new now on Iran, contra what you're saying. And explain for people who aren't familiar with the Iran contra scandal this happening under the Reagan Bush years the selling of weapons to Iran to take that money to support the contras in Nicaragua which violated US law the Boland amendment. Yes. So that is scandal involved southern air transport. Which is also was a a. Cr a front company that really exploded into the news back in one thousand nine hundred eighty six because the Sandinista army shot down a twin engine plane that was run by southern air transport. That was taking all armaments to the contra rebels fighting in Nicaragua. So southern air transport was actually heavily involved in in all the the arms shipments to Iran in from the Middle East to the to the contra rebels. Nick restivo. Well, I I wanna ask you about a Eugene for who you mentioned in your article nineteen eighty six he was aboard a US blame that was shot down in Nicaragua. While on a secret mission to bring arms to the Nicaraguan contras. He was the only passenger survive. I want to turn to a documentary made by Wisconsin public television called the gene has some fos story from one thousand nine hundred ninety one it featured an excerpt from the station's initial coverage of what happened to him in one thousand nine hundred six but Wisconsin man has been the focus of.

"So we'll we'll move on these these are some of the things that David night talk about each week and on the digest, hopefully, hopefully tailored, we'll get his voice back in time for for us to talk about it at the end of this week. But meantime in still sticking with airports. We are in the US still suffering under the partial government shutdown as as we record this. And we have a number of art. Articles looking at the impact on on the airports. Some of the TSA agents are reporting for work in calling in sick. It's not huge numbers. But there was a statistic in the Washington Post that on the Friday before we record this. It said that of the fifty one thousand TSA workers five point six percent didn't show up for work on that on that Friday that compared with three point three percent who took unscheduled absences a year ago. So slight increase, Miami International Airport. I know closed one of its concourses for a period over the weekend and expected to to continue that scene. Some more recent reports that indicate airports are doing the same thing. Because with reduced staff. They are not going to change the. The security process. No matter how many or few TSA agents they have in. So they're they're opening up fewer lines because there's fewer agents, and those lines are getting longer so lots of lots of impacts from this this shutdown, and I was just wondering the the numbers here. Five point six percent didn't show up versus a three point three percent who didn't show up before. There was an article that was widely quoted I think perhaps a week or so ago which reported that quote, hundreds of TSA people had not shown up. Well, guess what? If you run seven five point six percent that turns out to be twenty eight hundred people. And if you look at three point three percent, which is nominally how many people would be out that's sixteen hundred people roughly in the difference between that is almost twelve hundred people. So yeah, I would say there are many hundreds like about twelve hundred people who apparently are. Sicker than usual. We also see an article AT w online that Neta the national air traffic controllers association has sued the US government over this this shutdown filed suit on January eleventh, they claim that union members are being unlawfully deprived of wages because of the partial government shutdown in they're also alleging violations of the fair labor standards act saying that the government is not paying at least the minimum wage to NetCom members who are working without pay. So I don't know where where this will go. This lawsuit names defendants President Trump acting if a administrator Daniel L, well, acting director of the office of personal management director of the office of management and budget and also. So the acting interior department secretary so the unions, not happy for sure I talked about this last week on aviation news talk. There are just so many different aspects to this particular story. Let me just mention a couple others. So for example, air traffic control. We know the controllers are working without pay. But there are three thousand of the support worker. So we've got about ten thousand air traffic controllers. They've got three thousand support workers sport workers are not there. So ATC has two controllers have to do everything that normally would going to be done by their support staff. In addition to the doing their job. There was also concerned that more controllers are going to hand in their retirement papers. Now apparently eighteen percent of all controllers nearly one in five are eligible to retire. In fact, I did read on Facebook note from an ATC supervisor said he was at of silly with fewer than twenty controllers to them told them that they were going to turn in their paper work this week to retire. Now, here's the irony. The people who will handle that paperwork. Yeah. The furloughed they're not round. So this came out of story from rob. Mark our good friend at flying magazine. Some of the other things are socio with this the investigations by the FAA in the NTSB of crashes are being postponed, and they're having to prioritize them. So they're small plane crashes in Florida, South Dakota in two Michigan that killed a total five people that have not been investigated in won't be read a separate story that a sheriff's department. I think in Michigan is having to, you know, work overtime to protect the scene until the federal government can eventually come to investigate the the accident..
