"I just think about the first amendment the liberties you have under the first amendment. Every single one of them has been assaulted by government over the past several years. I mean you. You're right to practice your faith. Your right to assemble your right to petition your government. Freedom of the press freedom of speech every single one. I use the example. When i went there still churches today dave that that probably will. My guess is in la county. They're probably still churches today. That a full congregation can't meet on sunday morning and this is probably now what eight nine ten weeks ago. I spoke to think about your right to assemble. I spoke to the new mexico. Republican party in amarillo texas. Because they had to go to texas to freedom they had to go to texas to be able to assemble in the size. They wanted to assemble because they're democrat. Governor wouldn't let them assemble more than one hundred and forty nine people in the state of In new mexico so that's crazy but an on and on it goes so i think i think this is. This is the fundamental issue. And and i mean scares me to death scares me to death so to that point. How concerned are you that just nobody trusts the system anymore. That that's sort of where i'm getting. Which is what the kids call black pill that you just think that the thing is so broken that nothing could be done and i always try to put a positive spin on all this stuff and i wanna do solutions of course. That's that's why. I do this. But i think a lot of people are just like you know what i don't trust the medical experts because a lockdowns in masks anymore. I don't trust the politicians who say one thing about elections when their guys in in the other the other way that the whole system it only works if we trusted and a lot of people. Just don't trust it anymore. Yeah and i'm very concerned about that in it's When you have and again. I think most of the blame frank league lies with what with the left. The left as is is has attacked every institution. We have and franklin let. Let's just be honest. The left controls almost everything right. The left controls big media left controls. Big tech the left controls hollywood. The lap controls higher education. The left control big corporations the left now controls big sports and just watch the nba. Right watch the anymore but the the left controls the congress right now. The left controls the white house. The one area they don't control and this is. This is the beauty of our great country..

"And it's something that we've enjoyed in this country like no other nation in history, But I think it's so many other people want to say that. Why do you think so Many people try to get into this country? Why do you think we have this chaos and crisis on the border? Because deep down, people want what we have. They want to be a part of the greatest country ever where freedom actually mean something. And I don't know that this administration gets it, certainly not the hard left, who now make up the bulk of the Democrat Party. They don't understand that and that's why you see this. The crazy response or lack frankly of response. To the people in Cuba who are yearning for freedom. One final when, Josh, I think we could squeeze this in here. Yeah, Jim, I'm curious. The Democrats keep trying to weaponize January six, January 6, the big lie the big like, over and over and over again. We hear this And what are the likely chances? They're going to just drag this out and and have a bunch of nonsense hearings and so forth? You know, since they're in charge of all the communities right now. Well, they're going to keep it they're going to do I said, I mean, they've already They've already announced the select Committee. Um, but in simple terms they have to because, frankly, what else are they going to talk about? They're going to talk about the chaos on the border. They're going to talk about the price of gasoline going up. They're gonna talk about the price of everything going up. I'm going to talk about the fact they're getting ready to raise taxes. They're going to talk about the fact that every single employer I talked to in our district around our district has told me they can't find enough people to work because when you pay people not to work, he shouldn't be surprised when you can't find workers. I mean, what else do they have to talk about? So, of course, they're going to do this January 16 because they got nothing else. And it's unfortunate, but that's that's just who the Democrats are today and it's what we're going to what we're going to see. So what are your priorities from here? Trying to limit the damage to the first Amendment into your freedom. You think about it. Every single liberty we enjoy as Americans have been assaulted over the last couple of years by the left every single five rights under the First Amendment, your right to practice your faith, your right to assemble your right to petition your government freedom of the press freedom of speech. Everyone's been attacked. Always point out to to think about this probably still places in some states where full congregation can't meet on Sunday morning. I had. This is tight. Eight weeks ago, I spoke to the New Mexico Republican Party in Amarillo, Texas, because for them to assemble in the size, they wanted to assemble. They had to go to Texas to get that freedom. So it's like and on. Of course, we know what's happened with speech with Big tech and what big government working with Big tech is trying to do to your right to speak out. So my my job as the guy who gets the privilege of being top Republican Judiciary Committee is to protect your liberties. Do everything we can to highlight what's going on and to protect and focus on the fact that Democrats are trying to deny you your first and then the right. Traffic and.

"Our conversations may end as we come out of the pandemic shutdown by July, the first Always happy to welcome and state Senator Jerry Ortiz EP Know his district in district 12. Downtown Albuquerque, Senator Good afternoon. How are you, Richard? Always good to talk to you. I am fantastic. Now you and wife have just returned from a weekend. Dixon, New Mexico. That's right. We get up there every chance we can, uh, it we bought a house there a few years ago as a As a getaway, and, uh, during Covid. It was a refuge. It was It's so quiet there we then I was able to get all my work done online. So it worked out very nicely. All right now, I started the show off today, Senator talking about this piece by one Williams that he wrote for the for the Hill yesterday. And he talks about how the national Republican Party has descended into what he called a forest. And you wrote about it last night and I saw what you wrote last nine I go. You know this? This is right up the same alley I've been talking about for a long time that The New Mexico Republican Party is becoming it is going to become extinct if they don't come up with some better leadership and ideas and just not be the grievance party. You wrote about that as well. Can you? Can you kind of expand on that? Sure. I mean, I I hate to see The New Mexico Republican Party following down the path that That the Trump led Republicans nationally have gone down. You know, it's one thing if you're in South Carolina or Arkansas Or even Iowa, Kansas. Where they have been long histories of Republican control. For you to take the chance on Trump. To take the chance on on some of the positions that he took. Because he seems so popular in your district. That's not the case in New Mexico. And and sure the Republicans in Arkansas and survived We're in Kansas can survive, I suppose. By, uh Eating total fealty and an undying loyalty to Donald Trump. And and whatever it is, he stood for. But in New Mexico if they don't come up with ideas People will turn away from them and drugs. And that's happening. Now, you know. Part of me is not morning that because of the Democrat They pose less and less of a threat. But It is. I don't. I think it is not healthy for for a state's political life. For one party to be so Much in control to have so much support and the other to have so little That that there's not a healthy debate over things that come up. And so, um, I think we do need to have a strong Republican party and I wrote just kind of emerging. Some of my Republican friends. To step back and take a look at Yeah. What they're doing when they just say, you know, Donald Trump all the time. We hate Democrats. Yeah. No, I'm talking about the Republican. No, No, no, but I mean that that's her position. We hate Democrats. That's that's as deep as against. Exactly and all nationally all they do and say no, no, no, They don't come up with any things of their own. And and it at the state level, at least in the house. They're very similar. The acting, you know, there was no to everything Slow things down. Don't come up with any ideas of your own. And and, you know, the Democrats years ago went through a phase where we were out of power. And we we we We were being accused of not having good ideas of not having policy positions that attracted people of not really having, uh, an agenda that could help the country move forward. And we moved past that now we have a strong, vigorous agenda. But you know it. It would be really important for the Republicans to start putting forth some of their own ideas. First, you know, if nothing else to counter some of the excesses, that any any one of us is problem You know what Democrats can can make mistakes Just Zeke Leah's Republicans can and if there's nobody to offer a corrective Then the the whole state suffers as a result. Senator Jerry Ortiz, peanuts their guests. He's in district 12, which is down in Albuquerque. Appreciate your time today, Senator what we heard since November from the State Republican Party had head chairman Pierce on several times. And I had to ask him repeatedly. Do you believe Joe Biden was fairly elected President, United States, and he finally reluctantly said yes, but it's still you know, kind of treading that line. If they don't want to go down and say yes, we're constitution. This is all done fairly between that and maintaining the position that there is something weird about the election that it was stolen. And that you know that then that bleeds over into something that is even more dangerous, Which is there's something about this covid thing that is suspicious, and so you probably should not get vaccinated. And there's still about Slightly less, maybe than or slightly more than 30% in Mexicans who are not vaccinated, and that's where they've been. It's been against the vaccination against Reasonable positions on Covid 19 closing down the state keeping people healthy and the election and that's where they stand. And that it is it is concerning when the most popular best known Republican in New Mexico is Is the man who founded Cowboys for Trump. Mhm. Yeah. Yeah, it is a rather peculiar fellow to respond to the story. No, he's a wing nut is a nut job. Yeah. No, it's really curious. Um, they have a very thin bench. They really have not spent enough time I would think. Cultivating. The young, uh Ambitious Politically ambitious..

"She was a Republican. Since 2012 women have had it and the other interesting thing for the Central Committee to them. That's probably important is that all three Congressional seats now are controlled in Albuquerque in New Mexico by women of Color Harold Cherokee. The Teresa Ledger, Fernandes, a Hispanic and Deb Holland is native Americans. So there's probably a little bit of movement in the Central Committee among some Central committee members to keep it with a woman and keep it with the minority. When, when was Martin Heinrich in that seat? He left that seed into He gotten that seat in 2008 and then left in 2012 to run for the U. S. Senate and Michelle Lou congressman came in in 2012, and she left it to run for governor. In 2018. Okay. Thank you. All right, So basically the seat is now men have been barred, which is fine, which is fine men could no longer run for the Democratic nomination. Some No man need apply. Is it also true that no Republicans need apply. Yeah, well, you know, you've got a radio talk show host who's in there, and then you've got a failed congressional candidate who's in there from the Republican side. And as you said, at the front of this little discussion, it's going to be a democratic seat and almost near certainty, And there's little question of that. I don't think the Republicans will do much to target it. And the that's why this Central committee process is so critical. The person who comes out of there with those 200 votes. It's probably going to be the next congressional representative. All right, so clue me in here because you're right. I do not know Eddie. Out of going. I don't know him. He's a radio guy runs a radio station in Albuquerque. He's incredibly conservative, and he made his bones as being the most trump of all, Trumpers. Um I don't know. What is it? What's he going for? He ran for the chairmanship of the state GOP lost fairly narrowly to Ah, Seo Steve Pearce, which I think you said or somebody said today is kind of a Nike you test for the GOP. Um What I mean, What is he trying to gain name recognition down the road. I mean, what? Because, Well, he's not gonna win this and you know if Trump goes to prison, he's not gonna be looking very good. Well, I've talked to him and I think his main thesis is he's but he believes that the New Mexico Republican Party has failed conservativism as you point out. He's a big guy on Trump. Very, uh, Ideological conservative, and he represents a wing of the party that feels that the Republicans frankly have been losing too much and when they get in there not being true Enoughto President Trump during this last campaign, and they didn't try to push Trump through they came with, you know a different program, so that's basically in a nutshell, where he stands. Richard as far as winning, you know, it probably helps him he's not gonna win. But it helps his profile and his radio Simpson and it also advances a conservative agenda. The way he sees it for New Mexico Republicans to follow, So I mean, he really is Trump is this about his own personal ambition and greed? Well, I'm not going to say that. Just tell you that he is of exceptionally loyal to President Trump was going to be maintaining a major factor in Republican politics. For better or worse in the next couple years, it appears not in New Mexico. Well, someone in the Southern congressional district because we saw what you've had heralded. That's the other major political development of the New Year's, that she's going to vote not to seek the electors that have been sent to the United States Congress for ratification certification tomorrow, and that shows how much she is in the Trump bed. She's there to stay, apparently. And yet Germany and realistically, I mean, look, look at the landscape realistically. Maybe I'm not looking at it. Realistically. I mean, the man The man is so toxic. The man is going to have to go away. He may have to be hauled out of the White House. He may have to be, you know, go into exile to stay out of prison. And yet, how does that in the long run have helping Eddie out of bone or any of that, Harold It doesn't. I think I think you know. Eventually, the Trump grip the mystique. What have you will loosen up dust on the Republican Party? It's turned into a near cult. That party is going to have to return to a more moderate Republicanism in this state. I think you could do well, I think I think a young person, maybe a young Woman of color to Mexico who's not crazy. To do well. Well, we've already seen in the organization of the State Senate initial signs of a moderating or a move towards the city with the election of Greg Baka as the new minority leader over suing gold for Tallis guy, So you know you're seeing little signs of it that you know you just can't keep on losing. You're losing everything. They have no statewide offices. No executive offices. No members on the Supreme Court. It goes on and on. It's an absolute of the back. Oh, and the biggest loss of power by the Republican since I started covering politics in the seventies, when there was essentially no Republican party here back then so the pressure you are so right, Richard will be building Yes, Trump will continue to have his day. But if you want real political power, you're gonna have to go to a new direction and a new person. Realities. And that will I would hope for the Republicans taking for the state's sake actually happened because we need a competitive system. We Richard, these things could go on a long time. It may not be for a number of years before we start to see people emerged from their fox fools who think that they can actually win Because the Republican Party brand has been so damaged it really it really has, you know, young people like a like a run, kitty. They're not the answer Once again, a pro Trump Climate denial and the whole thing. I mean, even for weather man, it's It's kind of weird. I love you saw last night. I thought Tom Friedman on CNN last night and it was really amazing, he said. What we need to do is brand all of these people. Brand. The Ted Cruz is the You know, Although the holly and all of these Republicans in the house and I think it goes into the state governments, they state GOP chairs as well, you have to brand him basically coup leaders. They're trying for a legislative coup day, Tom. And and so, but, you know, so it's not gonna work, and I think the Trump brand is going to remain toxic, but I think it's an opportunity for some Younger Not a farmer or oil. Not old white dude, Republican. Gain an upper hand, so I mean, somebody should jump in here. But we've already seen. Actually, it's a civil war erupting in the Republican Party hasn't quite come to New Mexico yet because Pearson herel who are the top two Republicans are completely as I said, in bed with Trump, but it should come. But you know the bigger picture here that Harold may pay a price for this upcoming redistricting, by the way, which is going to happen in the fall. Is that this vote today? Maybe the general public just vote tomorrow may not be, you know, recalled by the general public as much But it's going to be remembered by the Democrats and it's going to set them on fire. And I think, give them a little bit more bravery and redistricting her out of that seat. There could be a price to pay for her. I know other political scientists, but on the air well, everybody will forget. I don't think so. Remember speaker Ieg off already threw the gauntlet down and took a lot of heat for when he said he was gonna redistrict that See now he's looking more reasonable to a lot of people because of this what you called Just vote that's being perceived by a two day to buy a large stretch of the public and particularly the Democratic Party. All right, your feelings. We got a couple minutes here. Jo Jo Monaghan, jo.
