"Coast as Elsa tracks through the Gulf lots more to talk about. We're going to cover it off for you hear it. News Talk 7 60 wjr. We give you the headlines, then take deep dives into the story and we speak to the experts like our next guest. And friend. Lieutenant Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police. I hope it was a good and safe holiday, Michael. Good morning. Good morning, Paul W Yes, We had a very good safe holiday. I think on most parts of it for us here, we'll have to kind of wait and see how the statewide numbers go. But The troops were busy end on the roadways and in our nine townships, but overall it seemed to be a pretty pretty safe weekend. Well, that's that's good news for sure. And I'm saying on one of my monitors, uh, that we still have closures on 94, which were not unexpected because of the damage of the water. Anything new this morning as people are Those that head in to work, anything you can share with us, So it looks like that's probably going to be closed, at least for another week or so. There was some parts of this cement that actually collapsed underneath. So when M dot went through and did their inspections, they wanted to make sure that those roads are totally state before we opened them up. So that's going to be closed at least another week or so. But just a quick reminder. We did have a crash down there. Um, where somebody drove around there are somebody moved some barricades and ended up crashing into one of the holes down there likely nobody was seriously hurt, but just a reminder. Those barricades are there for a reason that that freeway is closed and not safe to drive on. Frustrating. I know frustrating when you can't get there from here, and, uh, there's not always a lot of signage that tells you how to go around these things to get where you need to go. And if you are geographically challenged like me, uh, it can be problematic. But don't don't be moving barriers and going places where they're telling you not to go. That's just not a recipe for anything other than disaster. It was disastrous around the country. Upwards of 150 people dying over the holiday weekend. In 400 shootings across the U. S. The surge in violent crime is being seen in major cities nationwide. Not here. Thank goodness we haven't had the The problems like, for example, Chicago which is just unbelievable, and I know you're happy about that. Your troopers are happy about that. All law enforcement in are very happy about that. But you take a look at something like that. And you say, Boy, Oh, boy, that's not far away. No, and it's not and you know, it's just one bad incident happens, you know, and and it's us. So we just remind people A lot of these shootings are due to people that are having trouble with de escalation. Just you know, a normal argument back and forth turns into a shooting. We've seen a few of those road rage incidents that turn into shootings and kind of just heard. About maybe one here in Troy here that there's been a shooting that just happened in the city of Troy over road rage incident. So, uh, got to kind of keep your cool during these events, and there's no need to bring a gun into anything ever. So what? We just want to remind people that sometimes you just gotta let it go. Yeah, it's never going to end up well. When a gun is introduced one way or another, there's going to be trouble for you, whether it's death or arrest. It's not going to end up well, so you're right. Don't bring a gun into it. Now the nation Logged. Several mass shootings over the weekend. That means four or more people were killed or wounded. Besides the shooter that then becomes a mass shooting and many of those shootings such as an early Sunday incident in which eight people were injured. Stemmed from the very thing that you just mentioned Lieutenant Mike Shaw, Michigan State police. It stemmed from arguments. Nothing more foolish than an argument ending up with people wounded or dead. And overall as of yesterday, 22,536 people have died of gun violence. This year, with 10,260 of them classified as homicide, murder or unintentional and 12,276 as suicide. The so called Gun Violence Archive reporting. And that's That's something that should get everybody concerned that we as an entire community to kind of work. Towards that point. I'm kind of glad that you brought up the suicide portion to that is one thing that we did respond to over this weekend was two people that died by suicide in our our areas, one in the Metro North post area Metro south. So there's a lot of people that have a lot of stress going on either. Do two coming out of the pandemic, or I think, too, you know We got hit by the flooding, and you know the residents and Dearborn, Detroit to gross points, um, that are going through a lot of stressful times. So it's a good time to be a friend. If somebody does talk or start to say something to the effect of wanting to hurt themselves. There's nothing wrong with asking them, You know. Are you planning on hurting yourself? You're not going to talk anybody into it. You're not going to make them do it if you ask them about it, But sometimes people just need someone to talk to from the suicide hotline to clergy or to a friend, So we definitely need to talk a little bit more about suicide because we are seeing that as well. And then the same thing with gun violence that we talk about all the time. Um, Once you pull the trigger, that bullet goes wherever, and that's where a lot of these mass shootings are is. People may be mad at one person. They fire six or seven bullets at that one person and then how to hitting six or seven other people right? So guns are just not the way to go When you're trying to set up an argument. The best way to go is just to walk away. And Chicago for whatever reason. For the the longest time now has become the place. People look to see what's happened. And in Chicago police Superintendent David Brown calling July 4th The most challenging weekend of the year in that you know how bad that has to be because they've had horrible weekends in Chicago and, according to the Chicago Police Department data 83 people were shot, including 14 killed In shootings from just six p.m. Friday. 26 a. M yesterday. 83 people shot 14 killed. You want to talk about pandemics or epidemics? There's one that's a big one that That doesn't have to happen, and it's within our controlled for it not to happen. Quick note. I guess it's I 2 75 in the barrel now for construction South Huron Road. I 94 Yes, that's uh, that one is going to be a bit of an interesting one that I make sure that you have another route. Take a look. If you can avoid to 75 down there, both sides are gonna be down to one lane. Um, Anybody that travels to 75 knows that's a pretty, uh, pretty heavy flow of traffic. Anyways, if you're going to try to get somewhere through there, get to work. You take that route. You better leave a couple hours early because That's going to be interesting for a little bit. Indeed it is anything else We need to know. Lieutenant Mike Shaw. We always love talking with you. And, uh And if you don't have anything else, that's good. That's good news. No, for once, you know, I think I don't really have a whole lot. Even. Uh, it seemed the fireworks settled down a little bit over the weekend. You know when they were supposed to, so I don't know about your neighborhood, but mine was No, they were pretty good about him..
