Malinvestment Happens When You Create Trillions Out of Thin Air

"When there is a greater supply of interest to invest than there is a supply of good places or places of value to put your money, you get something called mal investment. Mala investment happens when you create trillions of dollars out of thin air. You invest in a bunch of garbage. Just today, meta, Facebook, slash another 10,000 jobs. Mark Zuckerberg has put a massive bet into the metaverse. Turns out it's a massive failure. People just don't want to put goggles on all day long and play in some sort of weird abstract world of poorly defined characters and figures. It's not a success. I'm sure some people like it. It sure is, it's been, you know, some people are looking at it, but it's by no means a profit driver for the company at all. Nothing even close. So mal investment occurs when you create these trillions of dollars out of thin air. And when you remove the moral hazard and people think they can be forgiven or bailed out, then what difference does it make?

Facebook parent Meta slashes another 10,000 jobs

"Facebook parent meta is cutting costs by cutting more jobs. Remember when meta the parent company of Facebook and Instagram laid off 11,000 workers in November now CEO Mark Zuckerberg says they will not be filling 5000 open positions and will cut another 10,000 jobs, met a share prices rose at the news and early trading, earnings of the California company have been hurt by a downturn in the online advertising market in competition from rivals like TikTok, meta has invested billions on developing what Zuckerberg calls the metaverse. He says the layoffs are in service of building a leaner more technical company. Other tech companies have been cutting costs, too, this month Amazon paused construction on its second headquarters based in Virginia, following the biggest round of layoffs in that company's history and shifting plans around remote work. "metaverse" Discussed on CoinDesk Podcast Network

"Little bit more. What is the metaverse to you? And why is it important? You talked a little bit about why women should know more about it, but specifically, why is it important to invite more women and girls into the metaverse? For me, the metaverse is the next and more immersive version of the Internet. I think that there's a lot of talk about web one being the read only Internet rep two being rewrite and web three being read, right own. And I think what three has talked a lot about that. But when we think about the metaverse, I think there's also sort of a timeline of just the Internet becoming more immersive, right? There was the text reading it on a desktop, then there was going mobile, which allowed a lot of the rewrite capability, and then with the next generation of VR and soon AR devices with apple's AR launch coming up, there's going to be this alternate timeline of new immersive technology driven driven by what device could be capabilities we have. And I think just as we saw with mobile driving so much more sharing, so much more social activity because we weren't able to just look at what was happening, we were able to contribute. I think that with AR VR and other metaverse technologies, this ideal that we are going to be even more immersed via these new modalities of technology. And what I think is really important is that women and diverse people are involved from the start because if we don't show up early to these technologies and we're not involved in designing them, they're not going to be fun and we're not going to do the things that we want to do with them. We're not going to be connect in the ways that we want to connect. We're not going to make it a space where we can truly have fun and make the type of impact. And so for me, I'm an optimist in life, but I'm also a realist. I think that this technology is going to move forward. Whether we like it or not. Whether you're pro metaverse or you're not these technologies are emerging, I think that the more we can get involved in shaping how they're used, the more equitable and more opportunity we'll be able to be created by having them become more popular. Yes, I agree a 1000%. I think there's going to be a lot more happening in the metaverse, especially like you mentioned with apple's release of products, more companies are investing millions, billions of dollars into the metaverse. So let a company don't want to be left out. We see this by meta creating products just Facebook changing its name to meta was a huge movement towards an embracing the metaverse in its build and you talked a little bit about, oh, he talked a lot about representation and the metaverse and why it's important to invite women and girls. What are some of the in real life benefits of participating in the metaverse? So I would say that everything I do is graded on the fact that am I learning and I experiencing new things. We are so early, a lot of us think that it's going to be ten years before the metaverse as truly put forth of interoperable completely immersive experience will really exist. I think that we'll look back on these times and it will feel as if we're in the stage of stone writing on walls versus beautiful novels. And so at this point, I think the important thing is learning and investing in your education because as the technology evolves, you don't want to have to jump into something 5 years from now and have it be too big of a leap. So I think if you're someone who's not involved in any type of AR VR metaverse technologies, I think how I would think about it is this is an opportunity to grow as an opportunity to invest in my skills. Every company I talk to is thinking about how they are going to transition into this next stage of technology similar to how they transition to mobile from desktop and they're all looking for people who understand web three in the metaverse and feel comfortable jumping into that type of environment. So I think from a career standpoint, it can also be a huge career accelerator to be someone who is open to coming in, learning, experimenting, and growing. I know when I first joined Google, you know, fresh out of school at that time, no one knew about building an online business. No one knew how Google search worked. I mean, now this seems ridiculous, but at that time, they were like, no one has done this, right? We don't have an option to hire people. All we can do is hire the smartest people we know who are willing to learn. And I think that's what the wave is going to be as more companies transition into web three and metaverse. No one's done it. Everything's an experiment. We're all learning as we go along. But if you're someone who's willing to lean in, experiment, get a few things right, get a few things wrong. You're going to be the type of person who is going to be set up for success as we make this transition into the next wave of technology. Yes, speaking of leaning in and transitioning to the metaverse, world of women is in partnership with the sandbox, which is the decentralized gaming platform I was talking about, what is going on there? So sandbox has been an amazing partner in so many ways. You mentioned at the top of the show, the incredible partnership that we have to empower women to enter the metaverse and web three. They've had incredible funding for us 25 million to make sure that we're working together to have a better pipeline for women and girls. Our foundation is working really actively on some educational resources that I'm extremely excited about that will be launching soon, as well as doing some new programs to help girls get introduced to the idea of NFTs and

"It? You can't go in a and then suddenly sell someone's Z. You've got to go through B, C, D, E, F, all the way to get to Z and it's what's in the next one, DeFi is definitely going to be in so that staking and decentralized derivatives, things like that's going to be in. This is basically just coming for the exchanges now. So what are the standards that the exchanges and I'm happy with that? Because that's centralized actors need regulating, centralized exchanges, do rog people, like Celsius, gambled with people's money and lost it all. So yeah, I think actually I'm not that worried about it, but I'm worried about the direction of trouble. Yeah, totally. And I think the last one we want to talk about is ripple. Yeah, this story is basically ripple, wins its case against the SEC as branding it as a security. Again, this is mixed bags like people don't like ripple and I understand that. 2017. Effectively. It's the dino coin. It was about it was pre Ethereum. It's one of the oldest cryptocurrencies. It's been around forever. And actually, they've very institutional in their framing. They've always been about bank rails. They've always been about taking crypto to the kind of international settlement remittances market. The problem is XRP as a concept is just a gigantic slush fund. And it's like the idea is it's a big liquidity pool that allows you to try to get a suit. Is this your day? No, it is. It's just, this is what they said. It was going to be this big liquidity pool. The absorbs provides liquidity across all these things. The reality of it is and this is like basically a fact. They've just been selling ripple the company have been selling XRP into the market for years. And this is why they have a $1 billion to spend on lawyers. That defends them against the SEC. So I think what's happened here, the SEC of burnt so much of their office hours on this case and ultimately lost. It's a huge L it's like this is a real fail. The SEC. They went for the big dog. They went for the suable company. The first one. And this is the point you made last week. So if you can't get the big dog, you go for the small dog. Exactly. You go for as many small dogs as possible. And actually, it appears that they go for the really small dogs. They're going to the chihuahuas and kicking them in the oaky dowels. Shall I take on this wall? Oh no, I'm going to go stamp on this chihuahua. And the truth of it. Like the SEC is stamping on little dogs. That's what they're doing. And then with that, this is where people seem to still think that XRP is going to be the substrate for the U.S. dollar in the future. This must have mooned I've not looked at it. But yeah, ripple must have done well after it's bullish for them. They've basically got away with not being a security, which is galvanized that community. But it's also going to be bullish for crypto as well, though, right? Like how does this play out across the crypto space? It means that some things are like Gary's flipped his narrative to crypto securities around this time and oh, okay. So this is how he's reclaiming that loss, which is who's the battle win the war type player. They can take my night, but I'm going to take their rook next. So yeah, predictably ripple is up 20, 30% this week. Back to around 50 cents. This is going to be ripple for that. For them, it's going to be like, it's going to be bullish for them. Now they have this institutional layer XRPL. It's making me want to look at ripple again. Like MFA. Honestly, might take another look at ripple, like I'm may have written it off a while ago, but definitely not NFA, but Nixon. Oh no, I'm not in. Absolutely not. I still hate it. No, but you mean, as a project, as a protocol, is it going to work? Check in on them. Maybe we can do a deep dive on ripple. That's not a bad idea. Yeah, we'll get all the let's go deep, get all the XRP army or listen to it. I'll just see what doctor Nick thinks. Jerry did that Twitter spaces where the XRP guy just kept bombing us from different accounts? Yeah, that was super weird. Very weird. Weird vomiting noises and stuff. Very strange. Now you're super upset that I called ripple pump and dump. Everything could pump and dump things. So thank you everybody for listening to this episode of the crypto market watch. As usually you can find us on Twitter. You can find us on Discord. You can find some telegram or the links to our channels are in the show notes and we look forward to seeing you guys next week. "Luna. So I don't know, man, it really does rub me the wrong way when I think about the way the way that VCs and certain certain hedge funds not Richard's hedge fund by no means Richard's hedge fund. But certain hedge funds operate. I think it's kind of shady and I don't appreciate it for the future of the market, but there's still an essential part of it. Now, this was us talking all around the concept of current high capital raises. But this raise that we're talking about right now in the web three lightning round has to do with ledger, the makers of some of the most prominent and well utilized hardware wallets on the market. As far as cold storage is concerned, there my wallet of choice, I really love the products that they've put out and frankly they're making massive strides in terms of their overall product offering. I think that if you are a ledger customer, you already feel secure, you already feel like the company is going to be around for a long time to come. And if there's any company out there that you want raising money to continue to secure their ecosystem to continue to offer really high quality solutions to their customers, this is one that you want to see raising right now. Do you pick up any other undertones on this story? More than I have or is this just what it is on the surface? No, I think they're trying to be the go to cold storage and they're trying to get as much capital in the doors so they can keep expanding their arms before we see this next run up. I really don't know a world where they lose. I've thought about it a lot looking in between ledger and treasure and keep key, they're all good, but I think that ledger does stand head and shoulders above the rest. So it's interesting, I certainly hope that they start to come up with some more creative solutions that are like actual touch screens. They'll allow you to utilize it a little bit more user friendly way. But I think what they did, even with the S plus, the most recent hardware release that they did, upgrading on the nano S, was a great evolution of the product. And I think it shows where we're headed in the future. So I'm pumped about it, but that's just my personal take. Let's jump into the metaverse. Top story in the metaverse this past week was what you were talking about earlier. It was meta reporting an absurd loss. $2.8 billion to be precise. And then on top of that, because they weren't done, they wanted the icing on top of the cake. They get sued by the FTC for certain monopolistic efforts. God, I hate meta. What do you think of this story because I know that you know a little bit more about the FTC suit than I do personally? But I know that $2.8 billion is a lot of money. It has a lot of money. And it also is nothing compared to how much market revenue Facebook AK meta has lost in just the last year. It's almost 700 billion. Yes, $700 billion that they've almost lost in value. But again, as we're relates to meta, the $2.8 billion loss that they just reported in the words of Zuckerberg he basically said, I'm willing to make this sunk cost now during various times. So that when we come on the other side, this is a $1 trillion market maker. He is so bullish on the future of the metaverse and what that means that he's really going all in on it. And they have so much liquid capital that they can do that. They can take that risk and make some shareholders not so happy, but he's only got so much time before it needs to start going another direction. So the other side of it with the FTC, they're trying to say that they're making a monopoly of the metaverse, which it might be a little too early for that, but the fact that they are already trying to get in front of this and say like, hey, you can't lay claim to all of the metaverse before it even comes out. I think it's super aggressive. And I don't know that it will hold up, but because meta is willing to lose $2.8 billion and is investing as much as they are. When they figure this out, and we get on the other side of this, big absolutely could be a monopoly. Like let's make that very clear. If you don't think Facebook is a current monopoly and a lot of outright ways, go check out their financials. If you look at companies that have already been building in the metaverse, you know, like the central land and sandbox and some of these others, they're doing okay, but their market share isn't nearly what meta is. So you take that same type of talent that they have mixed with the money that they have in the time that they have to keep building this out. They absolutely could create such a amazing experience that becomes the monopoly by far. So I don't think they're there yet, but it's really interesting to see that the FTC is trying to get in front of it before it even happens. The thing that I like most, the thing I like most about the proactive move is just that it goes to show that the FTC is still thinking about emerging markets in a really legitimate way. As opposed to allowing for monopolies to form early on in an emerging markets life cycle. That to me is probably the biggest indicator here. And I like it. I'm not opposed to it, especially because anything that gives Mark Zuckerberg trouble, I will endorse. But that kind of leads into our next story because I think that what you have going on over at meta is ultimately going to be one part of the metaverse market. It's a closed metaverse. They want you to use the meta metaverse. They do not want you to use all the other metaverse options that are out there. That's why this is a really big news. So there is now officially a number of different web three projects that have all teamed up in what they're calling the open metaverse alliance. This is directly flying in the face of closed metaverse concepts like meta and what they're trying to do. This is a grouping of two that you actually mentioned, decentral and and sandbox are included in this grouping, but it also includes the likes of alien worlds in a mocha brands, dapper labs, meta metaverse, superworld, upland, voxels, and I don't know two of those personally, but I know the rest very well, and I'm glad to see that they're really trying to get on board with this open metaverse concept. They want to see NFTs, they're used across a number of different metaverses. They want to see a number of different metaverses come together and offer product as one huge unit for the global benefit. I'm encouraged by it. I think it's a big positive move and frankly, if it gains enough traction in a gains enough momentum, that's when you're going to see meta have to actually pivot and join an open metaverse concept, which I don't think it originally wants to do. What is your read on it? Do you think that ultimately we're going to see more join this open metaverse alliance or is it potentially going to be too little too late? I think this is genius. Because when you look at the main proactive with allowing people to go and flow in and out of these different metaverses, the more people that join this alliance, the more market share, more opportunity you have to pull in people from different metaverses. When you are completely closed off, you have to appeal to everyone all the time. And that's a huge hurdle. With this, you don't have to appeal to everyone all the time. He's got to be really good at what you're doing. And by having this alliance, other people can come into ecosystem, enjoy it. And then also invite other people to go check out other stuff and have a lot more flexibility with the path to growth. So I like this a lot of things this is a great move. And I think it's going to be a lot bigger. Unless they close it off. That's also going to be a thing where they get to a point where they feel really good about all the ecosystems and they say like, hey, sorry, you can't join our alliance. So I think for all those who are looking to join, they should probably do it sooner than later because I do think it gets to a point where they eventually cut it off.

"So, hey, you know, well, you know, I've been in the metaverse related industries for over 8 years. I actually met you all before I went into tech. I met you guys when I was in live streaming, like back in the day. And then eventually went into VR and AR and everyone was like, you are crazy. What are you doing? I remember people reaching out, like, what? It's been one of the ride watching you evolve from where you were like, you positioned yourself. You've woven the web three quite nicely. Yeah, yeah, I rode the wave. I would say I recognized the rocket when I saw one. And I was like, I'm getting on this rocket. I don't know where it's going to take me, but I know I'm going up. So yeah, you know, I've been in murderers related industries over 8 years, worked with HTC vive. I was their VR evangelist during a partnership with Spielberg's ready player one. Well, the adaptation of Ernie Klein's book. Went over to magic leap as well with some folks here might know or not, but they make spatial computing glasses, augmented reality glasses. The chief futurist when I was there was actually Neal Stephenson, who coined the term metaverse in one of his sci-fi novels. Then actually ended up in Amazon Web Services and worked on many things, including large scale gaming simulations, and then launched off on my own and my company got acquired in ten months, just crazy. Wow. My meta consultancy. Thank you. Yeah. I mean, they sold it for 7 figures. I feel really good about that. You should. As you should. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, so but nobody owns you. I mean, you're like, you're an independent. Well, now since journey, the company that bought my company, I'm now part of journey, and their chief might have worse officer. But no one owns me. I am my own. Yeah, I am this. It's a CMO. Cmv, because CMOs. Some people say see Meadows and people see CMO, CMV. I've heard all sorts of acronyms for it. Chief medical officer. And I gave myself that title, by the way. So okay. I'm cool with that. Chief metaverse officer. So, you know, Watson this whole space evolved. And I'm gonna let Joel have his, I'm gonna let Joel have his metaverse rant here in a second, whose next question will be about the metaverse rant that he has. But I'm curious, like, where are we? And the web three metaverse world, like how far along are we and how long until we get to mass adoption because it seems like he's still a little early. It's very nascent, you know, nothing idea in the concept of the metaverse have been around for a long time. It's more like the building blocks of creating the actual metaverse are still far far away in my perspective, right? I see some of the gaming platforms as metaverse platforms, lower case M, or Proto metaverses, lower key Sam, right? So when someone says like Roblox is the metaverse or like Fortnite is the members, I don't agree with that. You know, I think the metaverse, the greater metaverse, that metaverse capital M is not here yet. We're building towards it. Right now, what the next ten years are all about are building the rails, building their devices, getting to where we need to do with computing power, edge computing, billing starting to build content, test content, what works what doesn't work. So that's my perspective.

"This week is a holiday weekend. it's labor day. The official end of summer the beginning of fall and all around us is crypto market. That is going absolutely bananas whether you think all of this. Nf t. metaverse stuff is absolute madness or whether you are totally bought in it is an uninsurable market forced at least in this weird little corner of the world and at least for now. It's that word metaverse that serves as the central point the central crux of the piece that i'm going to read for today. This is from david. Hoffman one of the cofounders at bank lists and is called the metaverse emerges as the t. Media grows in energy so has the conversation around the metaverse. we all talk about the metaverse. But no one has meaningfully attempted to define it. This article offers an actionable proposition. About what the metaverse actually is. The metaverse will be an orchestration. Many different layers and technologies. but it will ultimately collapse upon a single shared source of truth that all components of the metaverse will abide by. The metaverse will be made up of objects and those objects must know that all other objects exist from the foundation we can create a ledger of all objects in the known metaverse as well as their shared. History of interactions stories understanding the metaverse requires stripping it into its component parts and then re composing it into a single narrative of what it is. Let's dive in building the metaverse bottom up. The metaverse is a new organizing body for the digital age. But we've seen this before. Before we the metaverse we needed to find the iterations that have come before it seeing like a nation state. I recently read seeing like a state which illustrates what it is like to take. The perspective of a nation state a nation state is a unified body of incentives and desires using people inside of it to achieve those desires. The nation state is one central registry of everything inside its domain that is worth registering nation states like order and thus employs systems in order to account for all of the things which it has power over we have many ordering phenomenon. Define our lives by the desires of nation states. Social security numbers physical addresses telephone numbers. Busy i n numbers..

Thanks so how do you know your of. You've been married where. I think people will get comfortable using this stuff in their home. I like especially the aarp glasses. I think there might be some really cool. Like you're going to have a virtual person in your home that you know it's like hey instead of buying a bigger tv just put these glasses on and you can have. Tv take up your entire wall and then people will. The technology will progress and people get more comfortable and start wearing them out progress. We're sheep and they look like regular glasses. The biggest hurdle that ally these companies don't want to talk about like until this shit looks normal. Nobody's going to not nobody but some normal my friend. I mean that. Might be the case. But i just remember that time i was at the new york city comecon and sought to guys wearing google. Glass member google glass. Yeah you mocked them and then you like and later you really apple's getting into some really cool ar exactly google gloss. You know who those men were. Tim elon musk and jeff basis so they were clueless. Though as remember i loved it. It was the happiest moments in my life watching two guys who google glass. One guy arguing agai. He had just bought an action figure off of that he was like you told me this. It'd be nine dollars an hour. You're saying eleven dollars guys like i. I didn't say that. I said eleven dollars. Well guess what. I record it the whole thing and is buddy being recorded it. Oh my god that's so sick. He's like yeah. And i'll play it back me. Like took out his phone like attaching cable students up and the guys like even if i did say nine dollars. It's eleven. i misspoke i. This is the law. Isn't that if i say something and then i change it. I have to you if you don't wanna pay that you can walk away. Please stop plugging your google glass into your phone to show me video and again you're saying that it'd be cool if he didn't have to plug it into his phone. Yeah just project if the guy also going to beam it to you. I don't think we need to document as much as we document. Here's i. I feel the opposite lately because i think that by the time we're older like say like ten twenty years from now. I think there's gonna be some pretty crazy a our stuff where it's gonna be like. Hey you have like a bunch of pictures from this event will be able to like rebuild this entire thing in three dimensions and and dramatically upscale these photos and turn them into like a three d statue that he can walk around. "Are here because we're doing licensing deals with everything. So you know spiderman and batman and stranger things in john wick or whatever they could all be together this box call up if if anybody's listening who has a call of the metaverse. This sounds like it really sucks with fortnight with kids. I mean that's the thing we're going to see the reprecussions of what's happening. Now you on. The decades succumb for these kids that you know they got screwed on being alive right now. I guess what the trade off will be will never die cure but they can't go outside right so i mean that. But that's the thing where it's like all right so some kid that's like eight years old now and are now deep into year. Two of like. I don't hang out with my friends. We all go on ford night and not even necessarily like play the game you know. Do the The battle ray. Al together we just like go on there and we make things we hang out and we bullshit and we talk because like i also think kids are you know. They're more like self aware and stuff there. I don't wanna be on a video. I don't i. Don't i mean if you think about like when we were kids and teenagers if it was like hey you can all be on a video call together. Which would have been insanely futuristic. Or you can all play a video game at the same time and see each other and talk. I think we would have gone with like yeah. Let's do that. Yeah i think we would have gone with like let's hang out with each other but couldn't couldn't and i just feel like the thing that's bumming me out about the metaverse. Said they're trying to like force us into like it should be a last resort leg and maybe were there. Yeah and i think that's that's the other it's either. They're forcing it unnecessarily. Which it's a pale imitation of reality which coming to terms with the fact that it is necessary. Which sucks shit. Even worse was going to say you. You mentioned that like you hate all these cartoon avatars and the thing is like that's where the technology is right now but they're getting better and better and now there's like a few different companies working on like really creepy shit where it's like. This is a camp two cameras one. That's like inside your vr headset looking at your eyes and then another one that is basically when you see you know mark ruffalo being the hulking. He's got dots all over his face and like a camera on his head. That's like you know attached to a foot long pole facing him. It the that there's gonna be a combination of that so that when you're in this virtual reality you're gonna look like you and you're gonna. Your face is going to move like your face. I mean we're probably not too far away from that because things are they're already working on that and stuffs.

"Gay which hopefully will not fall into complete dystopia nail scape. What what elements like. How would you build it because to me. It just seems like a netflix spilled. We'll have netflix on my tv. Yeah or if it's like. Ooh but don't you want the immersive experience. I could go to a movie theater. I mean now. I can't concern. Dan pandemic 'cause we live in a dystopia. Now's game but theoretically well. So i mean they have like a vr like one of the more popular apps on on the vr headset. The oculus quest which is facebook's vr. Headset which i do. Own full disclosure. They have was name a big screen. It's called and it's like an app where basically you can watch movies in like you know like a nice movie theater a nice home movie space station movie theater a drive in movie theater but the allure to it is more you can invite friends and then they are literally sitting next to you and of course they're just like a dopey avatar but when you hear them talking you hear them to the right of you where they're sitting example so you can actually sit and kind of have a communal experience and which is nice during a pandemic nicer. Well i was gonna say nice during a pandemic but it's also nice if you know you can't be with somebody if you're on the other side of the country or something like that. I can see that being especially now. It's fine to me that we're all kind of pass. This trend were for year. And a half starting or whereas like we're gonna do zoom calls in house party calls with everybody you know with friends and family and then people very quickly got sick of. I think part of it was because we all sort avenue do it for like work a lot too but but it was also like okay. I'm just staring at a screen with your face on him. We're not doing any. Yeah this isn't how when when we hang out. We don't acidic club. Jack-o-lanterns together easter eggs. We do all kinds of fun stuff. Candle of the minora together now. You'll be able to do that kind of stuff in in the metaverse in virtual reality another place where the meta that's pushing the metaverse concept is a fortnight okay there and now they i think they're laying a little more towards the ready player. One idea fortnight were the iron giant to running around. Yeah we're the ideas like this isn't a place where an this isn't like an open internet type thing where it's like everything's here but all..

"I'll go to amazon. And then like but then maybe i need to kick back. I have some fun. I'll go to a bar and my friends will be at that bar. But i'm in one program. The entire time switching between different apps right tom What's the benefit of this. Why would this happen. And why would anybody want this to well. I was gonna say the thing that a lot of people like suck and and other people you know talking about the metaverse. They're like conveniently leaving out the fact that in all of these books all of them where there's something like a metaverse. The reason why is because the real world is distortion. Hell scape that. everyone wants to escape from. So that's why they're going into these things and unfortunately it looks like the you know the these books really hit the nail on of of what would drive us to to escape. Zach worked so hard to make the current world dystopia house things. So i think i think mark zuckerberg did not to make the world a dystopia and hell scape. He work to make as much money as humanly possible and that was a not even an wanted side. effect just happened is just collateral. It's just well. That's what's going to happen and i think again he. He's you know he's skating to where the puck's gonna be and he's seeing like oh bru- sued. Everybody already escapes into their phones. And once the technology catches out people are going to want to escape into something even more immersive. Do you want this to happen to them. You wanna thriving metaverse that you can go into whenever you'd like not in this way. I think i think certain elements of it sound really cool and fun and like i'm i'm a like a you know. I love thinking about the future and thinking about you. Know the progression of technology and they're definitely elements of this. That sound like that's great. That sounds cool. But they're also the the problem with technology general right now and why. It's like kinda hard to be excited about alive. technology is. Because it's like. I can see all the downsides to that just because we use technology when we were kids and it was like whoa. Look at new gameboy. Nobody was like people are going to be on that gameboy. Sixteen hours a day. And they're never gonna. I mean actually people were more people on gameboy. All i'm saying people were worried that these kids it's gonna rot their brains and that didn't happen but like but the phones did rot. Rob people's brains. What aspect like if you could design the metaverse only be you know to be a nice compliment to the real world..

"I was gonna say all these companies want us all constantly now. The time i was gonna say that. I didn't fully explain. Why the idea of the metaverse is it was coined. I wanna see maybe in snow crash the book. You don't like the book your big fan of the author william gibson. Is he problematic. I don't think he's problematic. You're thinking of orson scott card guys that no i think i th i think he's i mean maybe i'm wrong but i haven't heard anything bad about him. Yeah interesting. the way said that he problematic now. but you just assume because these side Like a sci fi writer. That's been around. you're like up. He's probably cancelled friendly. If not canceled. Probably deserves to be no. I mean i'm not gonna sit here and defend the guy really know that much bound by avert a few books and neil stevenson. Now oh yes. I'm thinking of william gibson though. But neil neil stevenson wrote snow crash. I'm thinking of william gibson wrote neuromancer. And i can't remember what else big big big big big side i'm on neil stevenson's page and there is no controversy. Okay well then. It's fine outside mean. Both of these guys are still putting books out so but these are the guys who like in the eighties. Came up with a lot of stuff you know. They came up with a live. These words like metaverse cyberspace you know. They they were at the cutting edge of pets.com. Imagine pets.com they were at the cutting edge of like. Oh this stuff. Starting computers the internet is in its infant but the internet and home. Computers are in their infancy. We're going to write books about where this is going So that's where we're ideas about the metaverse come but the the basic idea of the metaverse and is an idea. That's in like ready player. One other things where it's essentially like a shared space that a one company in particular doesn't own well. That was what the whole internet was supposed to be right. Examine enter the goggles. I mean well you know. Nobody owns the internet. You can go to any website and basically they were extrapolating that out. I mean the web wasn't even around when when some of these books were written but the internet no serving the people do in the surf the web they went on like telnet and gopher and use net other things that skynet they were. They were smart enough to stay the sky that but they basically were looking at all this stuff. And saying like yeah. This is all primitive but one day. We're going to get to the point. Where like everything's virtual reality. Everything's like three d. avatars. And whether you put on a vr headset and they are headset or years looking at two dimensional screen. There's going to be like a three d space that exists there's like three d. representation of the internet. And everything's gonna be on there so there's going to be like a big building that says net flicks and you'll be able to go in there to watch netflix movies but across the street. There's the hbo max building. You can go in there. And then it's like i need to pick some stuff up for my kid..

They're the one of the ones really pushing on this metaverse concept and they came out this week with like you another big media bush and their presentation as you were saying for the metaverse is like the lamest possible version of just. This will be a new way to have meetings in virtual reality. Do you think mark zuckerberg thinks peop- like he enjoys meetings when he's in the m- in a meeting young talent. Everybody what to do. I mean and that's you know when you're like everybody must have meetings. That's where everybody's the happiest. I mean when you're the ceo. Everybody's got a bunch of sycophants around. But i think kind of regardless of the company when you're the ceo. It seems like the majority of your time is spent in meetings right like mark zuckerberg never like all right. "Mad house right. What are you going to do. And we were going to the community pool together. Yeah they were going to a nice day at the pool where i used to be a lifeguard. Probably issued should have told me to. I probably get headed down with you giving everybody a thrill by doing stand for bit given everybody a real thrill. Are you telling me that all these. Lifeguards who were born after high became alive lifeguard. Don't know who i am. Guards were born after nine eleven. So you're saying that maybe they aren't being precautious says they should they have at precautious. They didn't live through that so they don't know you know how bad things can get or what they have to be prepared even grown up in a world where everybody is hyper aware. Yeah can go round. So they're frisking everybody on the making them walk through those Naked scanners i got frisked so many times at this pool and i'm not complaining anyone naked at the pool. Okay guys in the locker room. But i'm just saying you would think i was at the pool like forty hours a week for. We're mostly families go. Yeah i'm still. I'm look i'm not saying i want to see it. I'm just saying i'm surprised. You seem disappointed when you said in a little disappointed but just saying i. It's it's weird when you think about it. So this guy he's like. Oh you're going to the pool Residents only and there's a reason why this guy he's like people from brooklyn could come in and just use our like that and as you mean by people from brooklyn kazan. Talking about me right. He used to be so much fun he would do lake fun. He was like the neighborhood. Robin williams like coked up robin williams got clean. Do like funny voices and stuff. And like in retrospect voices that are like kind of offensive. Like at the block party in one thousand nine hundred. It's this guy. Works at the chinese hasher on that. We all loved Then he started complaining about like how the pool has fallen into disrepair in used to post the menu on the wall at the snack bar. But now it's on the counter at the snack bar so he'll never get thank the snack bar ever again and like weird stands snack. Part's gotten better. I know they serve alcohol. But even still i imagine you could probably more or less. Memorize these akbar menu by looking at it once right. Yeah and like yeah okay. This is these are the three items i would be interested in. I'll remember that they have them. He's like how. Am i supposed to know how much a hotdog dog in the menu. It's posted its just posted in a different place. Right was when he gets up to the counter so hot dogs hot dogs. I one hundred thirty dollars. While i gotta think about this. That's the thing you're starting to think like this guy which is dangerous way hotdogs not gonna cost one hundred he. How do i know up there. And then they've already got me. He thinks they moved the menu so that they could change the price to one hundred and thirty eight dollars. He'll order it and then he has to pay it. I mean i'm pretty good. Scam isn't the thing. Like that's where i saw a little bit of you and i know one of us would tell a story about how we were upset that we thought a snack bar. Return a scam on us and it's funny now because we have other things going on. And here's we're not gonna have anything else going on in our lives and that's gonna be the only thing we have to say. Oh i fully imagine by the time Hopefully i make it..
