"Talk about the fish brine, that Gourmet fish Brian, Dave and I are both man. That stuff is so good. That's several people approach me and they've heard the podcast and I'm like, man, you push high mountain seasoning pretty hard. I'm like, yeah, you're like, you're always talking about pKa in both spider and this one, 'cause I'm talking about good products that work that's good stuff. Yeah, but they're like, is it really, you know, I had somebody the other day. We gave a pair of sheep feet away. You know, and we've had Caleb on here. He's a great and their custom orthotics for your feet. You send out a mold. They send you these orthotics, right? A guy commented on our giveaway. Those aren't even going to last a trip, right? And I commented back, I said, well, they kind of have a lifetime warranty. So if they're only last in one trip, they're going to have a pretty good turn. I'm like, I've had a pair for 600 days. They're in my shoes all the time. I ordered a second pair because I got tired of taking them out of my hunting boots, putting them in my tennis shoes, putting them on my tennis, right? Because every time I'd go somewhere, I'm like, oh, they're not in the right shoes. So I solved this. I got one of my tennis shoes, one of my own booths, whatever I'm wearing. These questions about, I'm not going to promote products that I don't believe in. When we're talking about high mount seasoning, I've always joked about duck and goose is great if you mix it 50% with beef fat or pork fat. And make jerky sticks while Patrick used their recipe and made a 100% duck with high mountain seasoning. And they were good. I used that Mesquite blend, waterfowl Mesquite. Oh my gosh, that stuff was really good, wasn't it? Almost as good as the antelope. Not quite, but it's good. You know, I'd say antelopes ten out of ten and those were 8.5 out of ten.

"Of course as the Secretary of State Anthony blinken will be dialing into a meeting of European foreign ministers to get today the concerns around Russia and the potential for an invasion of Ukraine We'll get to that in just a moment Let's bring you a data check though this hour at the start of Monday morning Most Asian stocks are down currently but actually U.S. equity futures have rebounded So at the moment the MSCI Asia Pacific index is down by 7 tenths of 1% But U.S. features on the S&P 500 up half of 1% NASDAQ futures are also gaining 6 tenths of 1% Is this a dead cat bounds Is this some bargain hunters of course after we had the worst week for U.S. stocks since the start of the pandemic last week the S&P 500 was down 5.7% also European stocks dropped the most in two months so we're not avoiding the pain here in Europe either As for bond markets then U.S. yields at 1.76% are flat the two year yield in the U.S. has been up about three basis points this morning Goldman Sachs now sees interest rate hikes in March June September December so full rate height seen by Goldman Sachs The dollar at the moment is strengthening up a tenth of 1% oil is on something of a tear Brent crude currently this morning trading at $88 29 to up close to half of 1% optimism around And it waning perhaps in the U.S. also Bitcoin down some 50% from the peak while Bitcoin manages $35,203 right now So those are the markets Let's get a bit more detail though with market moves and our market live editor but good morning Heather Is this big sell off in stocks over the big question Good morning I don't think so I'm more in the today's a dead cat bounce We've got two things We've got the fed coming up and if Powell doesn't confirm 25 basis points in March as possible I think markets will be surprised and the possibility of quicker fed hike is likely to hurt the highly valued tech sector Also you've got a big earnings week such as Apple Netflix really was a disappointment and that helped spark the textile on Friday And you've even had disappointing earnings hitting banks And that was thought that the more value sector would benefit Instead and earnings are too big risk for stocks this week Okay not just the fed though are the Central Bank policy could affect things this week Yeah I think Canada could actually be really interesting I mean you don't have economists forecasting rates but the market definitely are because you have high oil prices inflation and the fed have kind of made most of the market assume the BOC is going to hike rates this week So that is could end up being even more exciting than the fed Okay perfect Thank you so much with what to watch in the markets this morning that was Heather Burke real time market commentary and analysis Check out markets live That's ML live on your Bloomberg terminal So that's a look at the markets Let's go now to today's top stories Here is Bloomberg's Liang gas Good morning Leanne Morning Caroline and thank you Washington is ordered a family of U.S. diplomats to leave the embassy in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv due to the continued threat of Russian military action His Bloomberg's at Baxter with the details The signal is that Russia could invade at any time and the State Department is issuing a statement saying quote the security conditions particularly along Ukraine's borders in Russia occupied Crimea and in Russia controlled eastern Ukraine are unpredictable and can deteriorate with little notice They're also reports that the Biden administration is thinking about sending troops into the region In San Francisco I met Baxter Bloomberg daybreak era In Italy media mogul Silvio Berlusconi has abandoned his plan for the presidency ahead of voting His decision strengthens a prospect that prime minister Mario Draghi could be elected as head of state 85 year old Berlusconi announced his decision in a statement saying that Italy needs unity to combat COVID and that he wants to avoid his name triggering division In the latest virus news this morning top U.S. infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci is expressing optimism the autocrane surge will peak soon But if the pattern follows the trend that we're seeing in other places things are looking good We don't want to get overconfident but they all look like they're going in the right direction right now But Fauci says the decline will not be uniform across the U.S. and the EU countries are agreeing not to add restrictions on vaccinated travelers and Germany will probably keep its current curbs in place and in Asia Hong Kong reported the highest number of cases in about a year while a cluster in Beijing does continue to grow Here in the UK just over 76,000 new virus cases have been identified in the last 24 hour period marking another weekly decline The downward trend has encouraged airline bosses to push the house secretary javid to restore restriction free international travel at least for the fully vaccinated The chief executives of British Airways Ryan in other carriers sent a letter asking for a clear protocol for managing future outbreaks that won't involve border closures and a flight bans And finally we stay here in the UK and Boris Johnson faces another difficult week as Bloomberg's tolls cable explains the report into allegations of lockdown breaking parties in the government is due to be published this week Sue gray who is authoring the report will deliver an advance copy of the investigation to the prime minister on Tuesday with a public version due to follow hours later That's according to The Sunday Times also reported yesterday that there has been an ongoing dialog with the UK police as part of our investigation This senior civil servant is yet to decide how much of our findings to disclose to the public In London Charles cavell day break Europe Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quicktake powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries This is Bloomberg Caroline Leon thank you so much for all of our top news stories this morning Now let's continue our conversations and focus here on the UK So we knew it was going to be a difficult weekend for the prime minister waiting for a make or break report but on top of that a junior minister fatigue accused the Conservative Party of islamophobia Downing Street insists that she was invited to start a former complaint process after she lost her job but she didn't Here's.

"Mesquite police chief David gill called the officer's death a senseless act of violence saying he had been on the job for over two decades That's the latest I'm Julie Ryan This is Bloomberg intelligence with Alex Steele and Paul Sweeney on Bloomberg radio When you look across global Wall Street one of the areas that has just seen continued growth in assets under management is private equity as investors look for returns in an extraordinarily low yield environment It's got an outlook for private equity for 2022 We can do that with Paul Goldberg Bloomberg intelligence senior banks analyst So Paul I just see it all the cash that these big funds are raising Billions and billions of dollars What are they going to do with it all Hopefully they go in they invest this fall It doesn't well for returns That's the risk There is some risk for returns and the companies the private equity managers do acknowledge it When their projection of returns are slightly smaller but if you think of it as a bigger picture there global they invest over different sectors It's not just private equity And the way they invest now is very different It's thematics So they go after things like life sciences So warehouse and they go after the growth areas rather than just trying to find deals So okay to that point though I feel like whenever I talk to anyone from the different shops they're all telling me relatively the same thing Life sciences energy transition ESG stuff how do they distinguish themselves in this pool I think that distinguished by the different asset classes that they're invest So for example if somebody like Blackstone they are very broad based But somebody like there is on the other hand they're very specifically involved in direct lambda Somebody who is like an Apollo take off their smaller margin products and go after the insurance assets So they really each one of them has somewhat of a niche even though the overall overall overlap For the big fees that they charge I wonder if the adjusted returns are there particularly since we've had such strong markets over the last several years which really suggested maybe these valuations are paying or going to result in subpar returns How have the returns been for this sector Tariffs have been very strong They dropped obviously in the first quarter of last year when the markets pulled back and revaluations happened But ever since they've been very strong they've been doing double digits in many cases 20 plus percent returns So in different compared to the overall S&P 500 which has been rallying Talk to him about their investments and alternative assets and sort of how each shop distinguishes that Well in many cases the big areas where they grow in this credit So that direct lending any kind of variations of credit where they can see where they can take the public credit to turn it into a private investment and they can earn a 150 to 200 basis points of extra yield on that Just because of lack of liquidity So that's one big area The other big areas are obviously infrastructure and that's where some of the ESG comes in and anything in real assets And then they all have gone after retail including some of the more recent announcements that you've seen like Apollo making a deal just in the recent days on the more retail distributions So one of the questions I have is who's investing in these private equity firms these days Is it still the traditional pension funds and things like that Or are we seeing some new type investors coming in I would say 85 to 90% still did very traditional investors The insurance companies again in a lot more interested and they actually partner in or the private equity manager is actually buying their assets to manage them But private equity managers are really gearing after retail there Credited investors they also build a lot of retail products So today it could be anywhere between 5 or 10% in terms of the inflows They see there's been a third of their influenza eventually Maybe within three to 5 years Wow Yeah That's a lot I wonder the big pie of that because did they just think that everyone's going to become a retail investor Or is it going to be super competitive which then leads to the question of fees et cetera I would probably assume that those still out of a credit to investors out there who are not involved in the market So that's number one Number two they coming up with a lot of different products that the traditional investor can access So you don't need to be in a credit investor And these products will typically be more marginal fee Products that can accommodate the traditional investor Hey Paul just real quickly here We see the deals when they get announced on a merger Monday How about the sales How have the unwinding in the monetizations of these investments gone over the last several years There have been very good probably over the last 12 months 15 months So Jonathan grey president of Blackstone said it's a good time to sell And try to elaborate demand is great and M and a environment So it's been really strong It's built out Not just that not only the realization is what happened The carry the interest and the fees that these guys open and carry the interest multiply several times since the bottom of the innate It is it has been and I think we'll continue to be a good time to be in the private equity business those guys always seem to do well Bloomberg intelligence senior banks analyst Paul Goldberg thanks so much Now from PE to ESG joining us now shaheen contractor Bloomberg intelligence ESG analysts ESG's were super hot the ETFs super hot Are they still super hot as we wind up the year here So that's a great question So definitely we've seen ESG assets continue to grow specifically for ETFs we've seen them reach about 360 billion in third quarter And that's about a 55% increase from last year The one challenge though that we see is that the whole base for these ETFs are very concentrated which could lead to some problems for sustainable long-term growth But still growing for now Where is this money coming from Who's investing in these ETFs It's a great question It's largely institutional investors right now So ESG continues to be a way to extract these large pension funds these large institutions to these kinds of PTS And I think we see it more in the institution rather than the advice or the retail side What will eventually change that I think it's maybe better definitions of ESG better understanding of what goes into the funds and what these funds offer Right now it's very opaque Nobody really understands what any sign is when they say they're in ESG fund Just amazed at the growth of the ESG business because I'm just not sure what's in it what makes a company ESG compliant Who tells me if a company I'm investing in is ESG compliant Is it not the SEC It's not the CFTC How should I think about that It's a good question I think that's one of the main challenges we have right now A lot of the ESG data the analysis that goes into it is from voting provider from rating agencies from publicly disclosed sources of information And the one thing I continue to be amazed by is sort of the dread of ESG strategies within more and more sort of what I call diversification We've gone from sort of ESG to thematic ones like climate change to even more niche ones like climate transition And all these words mean very different things to many different people So I completely agree with the challenge Which is why I feel like it's good.

"We haven't sent someone to the long drive championship in a long time. But bryson shambo was there so yeah i think you ought to send somebody out there james first off. It was out in mesquite. Nevada what is what is that city like. What does that area like a town as it a village. I don't know anything about mesquite while mesquite as far as the internet is concerned as far as they are concerned is a city But i'm not sure that anyone who has been to a city in their would consider mesquite nevada to be a city its population. Eighteen thousand people And there are no skyscrapers. There are no buildings taller than maybe three floors When i walked in to the holiday inn that i was staying out which is one of only three hotels in the entire city. And the other two are casinos I was gonna say we must have some casinos tarred and three floors. Do we not. It's the casinos are spread. Pretty wide not very tall footprint situation. I got it. Yeah and certainly owning the footprint But yeah there's definitely slim pickings as far as the As far as the the housing was concerned. But when i got into my holiday inn. I asked the lady working at the front desk. Said you know. This is my first time a mosquito. I've only ever actually been a nevada. Once i need to know. Like what do i need to see when i'm here What are the things. where should i eat. What should i check out. And she looked at me. Paused for about five seconds and said you know it's really boring here. I don't really think there's anything that you need to see. I think that'll that's a. That's a pretty fair explainer for For what the city of mosquitoes actually like. "Who seems really weird for me. People do that. That's true. If he's like, I'm going to see you in a couple of weeks anyway. It's going to be a couple of weeks. It's fine. If I tell them I'm here, they're going to want to see me they're going to want to yeah. No, I get that. I'm going to be caught. But I also don't understand why he told them that he was on his way to Sacramento so that it didn't look weird that he had just driven up their specifically to see her. And he didn't even know if she was there or not. So it's almost like did he drive up there hoping that he was going to see her and they were going to reconnect, and he was going to finally get his wife, I don't know, but it just seems weird that he gave them that story. Because I couldn't find anything else about a planned trip to Sacramento. Yeah. The next day, Stephen was in saint George all day on the 11th, in fact, people saw him because he had been out putting up his window washing fires, had come across a couple of girls who had gotten locked out of their house. And so he helped them call someone for help to come home and let them into their house. And then the next weird trip was the next day on December 12th, they saw where his cell phone had pinged a tower and over to Nevada, which is about 80 miles southeast of saint George. There was a transaction at a convenience store later in the evening that same day and Mesquite Nevada, which would have been on his way back because Mesquite sits right at the Nevada Arizona border. And when you're driving from saint George, to Nevada, you cross through just a northern tip of Arizona. Later that night there was the transaction at Kmart, which was where he had purchased the gifts that were found in his car. No one knows why he was an overton. All of the trypsin Nevada make the police wonder if maybe he had been gambling to try as lock at winning some money, or worse, and maybe he was running drugs for someone to make some money. Oh, they thought also maybe the window washing business was just a cover business like we saw in Breaking Bad where they had the car wash. So this is when they start looking into some people and Steven's life and one of them was the roommate that he had lived with for a while and seen George. As a family knew he and Stephen were very different..

That woman would be the last person to ever see her live They identified the person that had been talking to her on the phone. She didn't have any information about where she was. You can see her get out of her vehicle go in but you never see her come back to her vehicle and her vehicle is actually found exactly where she parked it the next day right outside the complex so it's really strange. Historic Oil Bust Delivers A Gut Punch To 1 High-Flying Texas County

"People in the oil business are familiar with the cycle of boom and bust prices. Soar prices plunge but they've never seen anything like twenty twenty when the pandemic abruptly brought prices to record lows even below zero. Npr's John Burnett reports from the Permian basin the heart of oil country in West Texas on a normal day in Andrews County look in any direction and stretching to the horizon. You'll see bobbing horseheads of pump. Jacks sucking up oil from deep in the earth but these are anything but normal days right. Now it's scary honestly Linden pertain. A well technician standing in Mesquite. Scrubland that overlays. What experts call a Monster Oilfield? We drove out here. Usually you'd see you with all these good wells. That historically have done a lot of production. They would usually all pumping and kind of looks like caterpillars all running across the landscape. You know and that's not happening right now. All across the vast permian that straddles West Texas and southeast New Mexico. Wells have been shut in in the Argot of the oil patch. American oil companies are pumping a million fewer barrels a day than were just two months ago. According to the Energy Information Administration all the big players out here Exxon Mobil Chevron conaco Phillips have slashed for Andrews County. The effect has been cataclysmic. The county is considering layoffs and the city of Andrews will hold off repairing streets and building a new city hall when you have a community that receives about eighty five to ninety percent of their tax revenue for minerals. It's a serious threat. County Judge Charlie Falcon follows the news. And here's about other cities. Taking a hit from closed. Businesses and Hospitalizations Andrews has had only twenty one cases of covert nineteen and most people have recovered. Nonetheless was Texas is getting a double dip of trouble. Not only do. We have all drop. We have corona virus. And we don't know how long it's going to stay around. You know what people not working not been able to shop not being able to you now sell oil Creates SERIOUS PROBLEM FOR US? Bob Stewart's welding and machine shop. His lost half its business amid the paralysis in the oil patch. A few jobs keep trickling in stewardess Paul and lumbering and jovial. He's done this for nearly forty years. He survived downturns before. But he says he's never seen demand if that rate like this whole world. There's no airplanes fly. There's No car driving cruise ships cruising. There's no summer vacations. Golic's we're producing a lot of oil for a world. That's not using not consuming Bob Stewart is grateful that he has not had to lay off any of his hundred ten employees. He got more than a million and a half dollars through the federal government's paycheck protection program. But that's not going to last forever. It's kind of nine eleven you over. You know what I don't know what it looks like. What comes out. The other side is going to be different with more than twelve thousand active whales in Andrews County. Hydrocarbons have been good to this community. There's an air conditioned Rodeo. Arena a waterpark and new little league baseball diamonds. The schools have a planetarium and an Olympic sized swimming pool. All over town. Grieving motorcycles and ski boats are parked in driveways and behemoth pickup trucks. Roar Down Main Street though the one two punch of the pandemic and the oil bust have left the region staggering. It should not have come as a complete surprise. Every oil addicted town has been before I've been interviewed by the media three times and every time it's when Andrews is on the map for some dubious reason with the Economy Russell Shannon President of the National Bank of Andrews says established companies. That saved for a rainy day. Will weather this bust a lot better than others as I. Try to tell some the younger ones when they try to get in the business. There's a storm cloud out there just because you don't see it today doesn't mean there's not one on the horizon. I mean we've just historically we've seen it too many times. The oilfield workers with six figure salaries thought it would never end. Even though it always does Mighty O. Fernandez was laid off three weeks ago. As a workover rig supervisor now he's realizing just how good he had it. While I've noticed so much didn't realize how much I spent when I was at work breakfast lunch. Taking guys out to buy food. You know of course you want to you know. Give your guys. Hey good job in here here. Some steaks baked potatoes or something for doing you know working to butts. Fernandez sits on his front stoop and Andrews having a smoke and catching the night air after a scorching hundred and four degree day. Now he stays home helps his teenage son with his homework and he tries to keep a positive attitude. I used to worry a lot The Bible says not to worry about what tomorrow because we don't even know we're GonNa make it more so I just have faith and just believing that it's GonNa come back together. The question is when and how long folks can hold out John Burnett. Npr News Andrews Texas.
