"Officially historic. So that's sort of our barometer. All right. Did you get your own plaque or anything? I know. I feel like I need my own plaque, don't we all? Every decade, 50 and after, we should get a new plaque. I made it another decade, but I'm still here. What is your earliest garden memory? Wow, that's a really good question. Hmm. I would say one of my earliest garden memories is being with my Mimi, my grandmother. She and my papaw retired down to Merritt Island, Florida, even though they were from East Tennessee. She had orange trees, fruit trees, and lemon trees in her garden. I can remember from the time I was maybe four or five years old, falling behind her with a little bowl and she would tell me to hold it still as she was picking fruit and then we'd carry it inside. And then, of course, she would slice open an orange and we'd taste it and it'd be delicious. So that's probably one of my oldest memories. Yeah, that's a great one. What do you wish people would do differently when designing, building, or growing a garden or landscape? I think for me, just personally, I want people to think about their neighbors. Sometimes when people buy an old property and they'll put some huge extension on it and take out a lot of old trees and really think about how that's affecting everything around them, including the birds and the chipmunks and the squirrels and all the wildlife. I'd like also for people to think about when they're gardening to share plants. I really love pass -along plants is I guess what I call them or what my Mimi would have called them. I love walking out into my own garden and looking at a bulb, an old daffodil, or a camellia, or an old rose, something that I have that somebody I love gave. I like people to think about when they go out in the garden, how it connects to them personally and how it might connect to their great aunt or their grandmother, grandfather, or their mom or dad, somebody in their family.

It does not tell me where it is anywhere. So this is the mystery dryer and John says, stop using it until you figure this out. You know, he's probably right, probably will blow up. I don't know. It's the ED 5 5 9 O S cubed. And yeah, apparently, if it has lint trap, I can't find it anywhere. And I've been looking. So that's on my mind. But if it's on your mind, I'll make sure we're talking about it. And we'll do that right now. Wayne is in the space coast. That's right. Yeah, going down to Titusville, cocoa beach, Merritt island, welcome back Wayne. What's up tonight? Oh, hi. Hi, Raleigh. I spoke to you about two months ago. And I'm down here at the Kennedy Space Center. I'm out here in a patrol vehicle right now. And that's what I was going to say to you was in our petroleum vehicles here. They have an external antenna mounted on the fender of each car. And I'm listening to 7 20, WGN on an a.m. signal on a wonderful a.m. radio. And my car, my personal car that 2021 has the antenna that's mounted on the back, the sharks in or whatever it's called. And it won't pick up a radio station if you're sitting next door to the station. Right, exactly. And I get so much grease from southern. I know this sounds negative, but I guess so much grief from some of the people around here. They'll say, well, why don't you just stream it? Why don't I do? I like to listen to a.m. radio. Absolutely. And yeah, I agree so much on my little a.m. that plays my obscure R&B oldies. I have an FM translator. And of course, you know, it's just lovely. And I go for a.m. every time. I wanted to sound like it sounded one of those record verse came out. I do too. And I just love listening to it, first of all, here in Central Florida, we have no radio. It's just awful. And that's why it's great here on the Space Center. I'm not here in the middle of nowhere, and your program is just great to be able to listen to. And I always get these looks in the morning when 6 30 comes, the end of my shift of course 7 20 pretty much disappears with fun coming up. So people get in this car and they go, what are you listening to all night? We are 7 20 on the dollar's death there, you know? So I think they don't believe I'm listening. I think so today I was over in cocoa Florida. It's a little town nearby. I'm sure you know where it's at. Oh, absolutely. Of course. And auto refurbishing place. I asked him, can I put an a can you I'll pay you? I have money. I worked. Can you put an a.m. antenna on my car? Or would you want that for? Because I want to listen to a.m.. That's why. Yeah, right. And so I'm not real comfortable at drilling a hole in a brand new car that I bought that are antenna in it. And just the looks you get from these millennials and generation xers or why do you need a.m. for? And the technician looks amazing and says, well, the short pin back there should here. Well, it doesn't. Exactly. You have to have an external antenna and the female that was standing in the shop where then I guess it was a daughter or something. She said, what is a.m. stand for alarm mode? No? That's a.m.. Forget it. I'm not even going to bother trying to explain it. All right, right. Amplitude modulation, lady. Yeah. And I think she's seen 7 20 on the dials of your clocks wrong too. So I know it's not 7 20, but that's another story. That's your blocks wrong here. That's classic. Yeah, and it was actually about 9 o'clock in the morning, you know? But it just seems like there's this war on about a.m. radio and vehicles today. So I understand some of the newer vehicles that are coming out now won't even have an a.m. radio. Electric cars in particular don't put them in. And because they don't want to spend the 27 cents to isolate it. Hang on a minute, don't go away. John just informed me that I'm blowing the news is to stay where you are. And we'll find out what's going on in the world at large and pick it back up right there after that on WGN radio

"Black lives matter. No. Does anybody know of a single major elected Democrat? Whether it's Biden. Paris. Schumer. Pelosi at all. Have criticised critical race there. No. So you can't tell me that they don't embrace big chunks of this stuff. They certainly do, And so does the Democrat Party. At the local, state and federal level. Let us go to Amy Merritt Island, Florida on the Mark Levin app. Amy, How are you tonight? Hi, Mark. Then the gray one. How are you? Okay. Thank you. Good. I'm so grateful that you took my call. First of all I want to tell you that I have your book on preorder. Thank you. And I can't wait for it to come in Meanies, my brother. My brother as well. He wanted to borrow the book What I'm done, So he went out and got his own book. That's very sweet. Thank you. And I am so happy to tell you that my brother was a schoolteacher and just after school, let out for the summer. He retired, and he said that, um he wasn't even going to teach critical race theory and he just got out the nick of time. You mean they were going to force him to, uh, incorporate that into his classroom? Yes, sir. Yes, sir. So he took the time that he was that age and he just took a retirement And he is happy as can be, uh, so and they're doing to the Let's be clear these people are doing to the teaching profession what they did to police officers. They're destroying it. They're absolutely destroying it, And it's basically the same mindset the same movement. So they destroyed our law enforcement in so many ways. Other destroying the teaching profession. And you know, we're gonna have to stand up to this and I don't blame your brother. Yeah. I'm afraid that they're going to start with the churches as well. Mm hmm. You're right, depending on what kind of church or synagogue it is. Matter of fact, they had this clown candy. Who is you read his stuff. It is so sophomoric. It's just so pathetic. And so filled with hate and so forth. And he pretends no, no, You don't understand. Oh, I understand. The Anti Defamation League. In parts of Florida actually had him speak to a number of their people like, Are you out of your minds? And they are, of course, and saying Obama hack Is now in charge of the Anti Defamation League. I want to Thank you, Amy and my best to your brother as well. God bless you, my friend. Let's keep going. Mellie Laurel, Maryland. XM Satellite. How are you, Marie? I'm well this evening Mark. Happy, belated Independence Day to you and your listeners. Amen. Thank you. Thank you for taking my call. So, Yeah, I'm going to pick you back off of what Amy in Florida was just talking about because I was, um, just curious going through what was happening here in the state of Maryland if they were teaching critical race theory, so I did a search. And I came up on the Maryland State Education Association website. And guess what came up something in a book called Stamped. So there's uh, teaching going on in Frederick County, specifically a teacher, an English teacher and one of the schools. They're talking. They were getting grants for black lives matter, and, um they're talking about all the racial injustice and systemic racism, and they want to be able to empower young activists. Lo and behold, one of their young activists. She's a senior there, young lady. They have a club that they want to Have some bowls of, uh, doing visually representing diversity and inclusion advocate for more teachers of color represents students of color and to educate a non minority students. And lastly, reform the history curriculum in Frederick County public schools. Um and I'm just wondering if any of the other uh I wonder if the governor is awake. Is your governor awake? Oh, he doesn't seem to say anything about any of this, Does he? Nope. Nope. Not at all. You don't hear about any of this, and I just happened to stumble across this mark this evening just by doing it. Well, this is the difference between a Hogan and a De Santis. And Hogan's looking out from self in his own career. Such as it is at this point. The scientists is representing the will of the people. And let me tell you something else. This critical race theory and this transgender ism teaching In this hate America hate, uh, economics, our economic system stuff. It is so destructive. Of minorities as well. In other words, this again is a Marxist movement, which is destructive of everybody adds Wake It doesn't matter what your color is. So rather than teaching young Children that you're free that you have opportunity that You can look for mentors and and here's what we can do, and this is how you do it, and Teaching people how to how to maybe make a living or something. No. It's a teach hate. Hate based on race. War against the existing society. And so people wind up getting nowhere. Absolutely nowhere and at the same time dragged down the country. All right, my friend. I appreciate your call very, very much. Let's see here. Um Once. Oh, here we go. Shay. I think its shape from Brooklyn, New York, the Ray W. ABC, How are you? It's high, Mr Levin. Thank you so much for taking my call. You bet. I am a great great fan of yours, and everything you say is absolutely brilliant. God bless you. I am calling in regard to the comments you said earlier about Anthony Fauci, and it's been bothering me tremendously for a very long time. How he was propped up as literally God, and you know, it's been brought to my attention by several pediatricians in my area. That that guy has actually never had any hands on experience. He's never really dealt with any patient. Now he is the one he is. The is are giving us You know, back and forth different information, how to how we should be treating our Children. We want to join 844580. 9326 is the number we're going to hit one open mic here and then get right back over to the phone lines. 844580 Wdbo chase. Let's go ahead and play our first open mic. What do we have? Hey, Larry John, from Merritt Island. Hey, you're talking about how swamped busier shop is and how hard it is to move around in there and such. Have you put much thought into, you know, maybe looking at getting a second shop or a third shop or even just building yourself. A much bigger establishment. Um, you know, maybe that'll ease some of the pain. Uh, just thought Take care. Uh oh, Larry, I think I know the answer to this one. We got in this one before. Yeah, I I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I'm telling you Um, you Can't imagine you could. You could. You can run tire stores. You know, you can have all the tire stories you want. I mean, how back and they screw up tires and brakes and shocks. You see what I'm saying? But when you deal with the level of difficulty and and some of the older vehicles that we deal with, um there's just no way that me or J d can be in two and three places at the same time. I mean, it's just it's just impossible. Um, you know, and I It's like I would rather have. Yeah, I can open up shops and I'd be full of cars. But you know what my reputation would go to heck in a handbasket. It would be horrible because I wouldn't have the control. That I have here and and and just running One large shop is a It's a challenge. I mean, it is a challenge. It's not for the weak of heart. I mean, you know, it's Very few people can do this and and succeed at it, you know and actually fix the cars that come in. But, you know, we're proud of that aspect and but to have a bunch of different locations, I mean, I'd love to do that. But, you know, number number two. I don't know where you'd find the people the technicians to to fill the shop. You know, they're just It's Yeah, they can work on new stuff. But anything 10 years older, they wouldn't be able to do anything with it, You know? So it's It's really a challenge to that. You know, to this day and age, uh, the degree of difficulty that some of these cars are to repair properly. And if you spread yourself too thin, it would definitely come back and haunt you. I guess I know. You know a lot of people, you know, the more the merrier. But in this case, you know, I just have to stay with my own My one humble, uh, domain. Let's put it that away. I like that. All right? Yeah, that's staying your domain domains They were comfortable with when you can manage right now, because, yeah. It is busy, but busy is good. But again. Yeah, we've We've talked about this before Larry that it's just expansion would be great if it's possible, right, if even remotely possible, But at this point, we got the magic mechanic shop cooking. We don't really need to change much right now. In the meantime, the Let's go back to fixing other people's cars right now on the phone lines. We got Michael calling in from Dr Phillips, Michael. Welcome to the show. Hi. Thanks, Larry for taking my call. No problem, Man. I got a problem here. That's kind of frustrating. We've had it for a while. My son. It's my son's car and he's out of town today, but it's a 2014 June Cherokee latitude with the 2.4 engine automatic. Uh, from what I found on the Internet. It's It doesn't matter if it's a 2.4 or not, or even whether it's automatic, I guess, but the problem is, he can't fill it up with gas. If if he fails it all the way up. To wear it first clicks and he stops. He knows not there were fill it. That he will his car will stall. It will, uh, stutter. It will give in all kinds of grief until he's driven for a while, and evidently the gas moves down a little bit. And, uh, now he's at the point where he only keeps about half filled. He can't. If he makes a mistake and fills it up to the top, then he's going to have this problem. I looked on the Internet and I, and there are hundreds of comments and articles about this same problem. I've called the deep place the customer service. I've called the recall line. Have called the national highway safety transportation because they've got articles on their their website about it. And no one seems to have my answer to this. We've done a smoke tests. I've done to smoke test on this emission system, and they both passed. I've had several places tell me that they think it's the purge control valves. One place the the last place. We went to the service manager argued with me, And he said, No, it's it's the emissions tank itself. So I said, Okay, if that's what it takes, will change it. And whenever He started writing it up, and he said, You know, we should also change perch control valve and you know some other stuff. And I said, No, I said, maybe maybe just the canister like you said, And he said, Well, you need to take the car then because GPS a an investigation ongoing on this. Well, I called Yeah Testament service and the recall. Nobody knows about this problem. But you can find 1000 places on the Internet with the same problem. Oh, of course. Yeah, It's like this. All right, Michael. What's actually happening is when he fills the car up, you're getting raw gasoline going straight into the intake system of the car. And when he restarts this thing, he's basically starting a flooded engine. And until it gets all this gasoline, you know that's flooding the motor out and found him spark plugs out of its system. It runs terrible. So, you know, I mean, it could be anything from, uh, controls Illinois to you know, uh, purge valve, something something is allowing fuel to get into the intake. When he fills the tank. Um, you know, I know what the problem is. I mean, there's no secret to the problem. There's only one thing is going to calls that and that's gasoline, raw gasoline getting into the engine. When he shuts it off, and he fills it up. Um, usually the cell annoyed. Uh, the the You know, the that alleviates the positive pressure will close when you shut the vehicle off. And what it will do is that purge valve allow excessive pressure to actually vent through charcoal canister. So you don't get gasoline smells. It could be as simple as a, um You know the the control solenoid for it. That's just not working. I will tell you like this. Um, they will be a little diagnostic time in it. But, um You know, if you if you want to diagnose correctly and and you and you do want it repaired, Uh, I can't sit there and tell you that I can't tell you what it's gonna cost without looking at it. But Bob Berg's dresser, Big Bob, that works for me. Luckily, we've got him until the end of the year. And, of course, he's retiring after that. But, um, that would be the gentleman that you would probably want to, uh, do the diagnostic on that jeep and actually really 100% beyond a shadow of doubt..

"Six this blue anchor. Pob remained on chancery lane in london for almost one hundred fifty years and unfortunately london eighteen forty six. That's the same time as jack. The ripper and he stopped several victims. Just outside the pub it was also the site of a gruesome murder of bertha starkey now starkey was a long time patron who lived above the bar with her seafaring husband. Who would be gone for this long periods of time. Now upon his early return one day he found bertha in the arms of another man he became so enraged killed them. Both and this causes bertha's restless spirit to continually haunt the pub. People have said that they've heard footsteps day. See candles extinguished by themselves and pots and pans banging and occasionally they can hear berthel wailing. Wait a minute wait a minute. You're talking about jack the ripper. You're talking about london. How did the pub wind. Up in florida in the nineteen nineties. The pubs facade and most of its contents were shipped to the us now originally. It went to new york and eventually came to florida. I'm not one hundred percent. Certain i'm thinking ninety six ninety seven. It came down to florida where it was reconstructed here in delray beach now. There were other owners but its current owners are mark and peggy snider. Who purchased the bar in twenty seventeen one of the interesting things about this bar that i had heard was that around. Ten pm is when bertha's husband came home in caught her cheating and committed the murderers. That's about the time that most of the haunting occur particularly in the attic so in order to keep these haunting 's at bay the staff of the restaurant will ring a bell to try and get her to be quiet. It's interesting because a lot of these paranormal investigations. That you hear from you know a lot times. Spirits are attached to certain places or even certain objects. It's no wonder that when they move the building all of its spirits came with it. You know it's not like those spirits are still on. let's say chancery lane in that particular spot of london. They're attached to this location for some reason now. We did a paranormal investigation with a company called paranormal coast. And they actually talked about going into the blue anchor pub and what they uncovered was more then bertha starkey. Sometimes we go in and we're looking for these entities from the past because everybody has a you know they have a history. This is mark crompton of paranormal coast. An elite team that investigates haunted locations. Grace crompton and rick macher. Join him to discuss the disturbing evidence. They found at the blue anchor pub. We were in the middle of our investigation and we found out that one entity from a certain period broaders to another entity later on and that entity ultimately towards the end of the investigation actually brought us to a different point and it was directing goes to a certain area in the location. These were all women that were murdered. Three women wow one of them was a victim of jack the ripper and the third one which was the most interesting to me. All of a sudden on the avalos. We you know when we're asking for a name. We get isabella and i'm thinking that's an unusual name get. It's not like getting to a normal name as soon as it said isabela. And we said isabel. The bartender said oh my god. He said isabella and her husband used to come in here. All the time and sit in a certain point where we were getting a lot of activity and he was on trial currently which we didn't know about for her murder he supposedly on a catamaran from the bahamas they had a private catamaran and it supposedly capsized which they prove later that you know he he was found guilty. Eventually but isabella came in. And we we actually started asking her so now it was a current ongoing murder trial and we got her name and she was saying things like she was kicked and then she said bloated and drowned and and and it was very descriptive and we actually said we actually went as bold as to say who did this to you and she said him. Wow and and like. I said we found this out because the bartender describe this whole thing that was going on and here we were looking for entities of the past and it broder's right into current situation so that entity was actually trying to communicate with us and tell us what was going on very interesting daddy the as a multi generational expression that a recent passing. She had passed within the last three years. Two years The prior passing of another woman who had passed a hundred years and then when this blue anchor in was moved board by board from england. Where jack the ripper had struck this. One entity was identifying himself as a victim of jack. The ripper wow. That's really interesting to learn that there may have been other spirits there besides bertha so this next one is out of this world. If you're from florida or just a space enthusiast. You should probably know about kennedy space center in merritt island florida. Merritt island is kind of considered the space coast it's that little blip off of the edge of central florida that you can see. I think that they chose that for the location. Because it's jutted out so much. I think it's easy to locate. And also the area code in in merritt island is three to one because it's three to one blastoff at enough you knew that oh cool no. I didn't know that little factoring. If you wanted to learn more space facts you can dine with an astronaut and you can ask them all the questions that they want anything that you might have wanted to know. Don't worry they don't make you eat space food. I'm not even sure how woody space. That would probably be the first thing that i would ask them. It's going to be a buffet. Ninety minutes i believe and then there is a qna there's also autographs and photo op. It's in add on when you get a regular kennedy space center ticket. Which i went last year for my birthday to kennedy space center. I was born in february. So i was just able to make it before the karenna virus pandemic hit and it was really a lot of fun. They drive you around toward the different launch sites. And you get to see all these different rockets in just experiment with all these different spaces things and the best part about it. Is that if you wanted to. You get to dine. With an astronaut get their autograph and everything else. Are you going to be able to meet astronaut person and us them any question that.

Later, the salesman who sold the three ten called and asked me if I would be interested in a job flying a beach baron for a business also based in Richmond. Virginia, the pilot currently flying the baron was going to work for the company that had just bought the three ten. I said I was interested. So he told me to catch an early flight the next day to Tri Cities Tennessee where the pilot leaving the job flying the baron would meet me. I arrived early the next morning. The pilot from Richland's was a nice guy, a couple of years older than me. He had come to the United States to attend flight school and build flight experience with plans to return to Denmark and fly for the country's airline. We departed tri cities with me at the controls and headed for. RICHLAND's I. had not taken the time to familiarize myself to the area. So I simply followed his instructions. Arriving over richland's a short time. Later, he advised me to begin my descent and start a teardrop turn to the right. He explained that we had just passed over the town of Richland's. He knew that because he had tuned in the AM radio station located in downtown Richland's on the ATF. He said I needed to maintain a seven hundred and fifty feet per minute descent while turning. As we entered the clouds, he told me to tighten the turn. I was already in a standard rate turn, but I complied, and we soon broke out of the clouds at about a thousand feet above the ground with the small town of Richland's in front of us. That's when it dawned on me. We had just descended between two ridge lines and into valley. I asked the pilot if you regularly flew into and out of Richland's using this method and he said, he did he told me, it was no big deal. Just crossed the AM radio station on a heading of zero, three zero degrees and descend at a rate of seven hundred and fifty feet per minute while making a teardrop turn to the right. At greater than standard rate right I added. I learned the owner of the Baron had grown accustomed to operating out of Richland's even at night as long as ceilings were at least a thousand feet, not me. Once on the ground, the pilot wished me luck and departed around five PM. The lobby erupted two men and two women entered walking fast with the guy in the lead talking loudly. As. They entered the guy in the lead. Saw Me and said you must be the pilot from Raleigh. I acknowledge that I was So he said file for Merritt Island Florida and let's get going. I filed an I F, our flight plan, and we were soon off the ground. The owner sat up in front with me, which was fine until he reached up and retarded the throttles right after breaking ground. I, put my hand up to stop him. But he had already pulled them back to climb power. He informed me the engines would last longer if we didn't keep them at full power so long. I told him. I had learned most engine failures occur at first power reduction. So I preferred to wait until reaching a couple of hundred feet before reducing to climb power. It was certainly a debatable point and it was his airplane. So nothing else was set. We landed in. Merritt Island Florida at about eight thirty PM, I was looking forward to getting to a hotel and kicking back, but it was not to be while taxiing into the F. B. O., the owner said, okay. Go back to Richland's and pick up three guys that will be waiting for you and bring them down here. I was stunned. It was at that moment I decided I would not be taking this job. I thought I would do. As he asked knowing, this would be the last time I would be subjected to him. I refilled the airplane filed an Afar flight plan for Bluefield West, Virginia and took off heading north. Bloomfield was the closest airport to Richland's with instrument approach if the weather was good. Enough. I. Would cancel the I. Afar Flight Plan and fly visually to the desired destination. Not Tonight. The weather at the destination wasn't too bad. But it would be late and I would be tired. So I called ahead and told my passengers to meet me in Bluefield. It was a little after midnight when I arrived the weather wasn't too bad. But bad enough to require an instrument approach. I was glad I made the decision to meet my passengers in Bluefield. Putting on fuel and filing an IOF, our flight plan back to Merritt. Island took only a half hour or so and my excited and well lube passengers and I were off for the final flight of the day. After takeoff. The Tower released me to departure control about the time I entered the clouds. A minute or two after contacting departure control? I lost communications. All engine navigation instruments were working fine. Everything was good except my communication radios, I turn them off and back on. I, check the circuit breakers. No good. I. Couldn't hear the controllers and I presumed they couldn't hear me. My clearance was to expect nine thousand feet, ten minutes after departure. So ten minutes into the flight, I climbed to nine thousand feet from my initially assigned altitude. I had already changed my transponder to squawk seventy, six hundred when the radio suddenly started working after a couple of hours, I contacted Jacksonville Center and was asked twice who I was. Later that day I briefed the owner about the radio problem. He said I could take the airplane to Daytona and have it repaired which I did. After two days in Merritt, island, I flew the owner and three others back to Richland's Virginia. I rode with the owner to his office and he informed me how much he was going to pay me to fly for him. I, told him. I wouldn't be taking the job. He paid me for my time. Reimbursed me for my airline flight and had me driven to Tri Cities Airport for my flight back to Raleigh. Sadly. The story doesn't end there. A. Couple of weeks. Later, I got a call from the salesman who had sold the Cessna three ten. He told me the Danish pilot with four passengers aboard had flown the new three ten into the side of a mountain, just outside of Richland's.
What Is NASA's Astronaut Beach House?
"Astronauts are driven disciplined physically fit and trained to solve complex problems in high stakes situations. But of course sometimes they just want to get away from it all from the press the physicians and the rigors of flight prep. You've gotTa make time to sharpen the saw. But where on earth can these people find a little seclusion? Well M- since nineteen sixty. Three Nasr's kept a bungalow on the East Florida coast closed to the general public. It's been a welcome retreat for generations of astronauts barbecues and bottles signings are cherished pastimes at the hideaway so are fond farewells. Historically this was the last place where many space bound crews got to hang out with their families before launch. Here's the story of the Kennedy Space Center Beach House and Conference Center or the Beach House. For Short Florida. Nasa go a long way back in nineteen sixty one. It was decided that the agency would build a new launch center on Florida's Merritt Island which is technically a peninsula by the way other sites were considered including New Mexico's White Sands missile range. Where the first atomic bomb had been set off sixteen years prior proximity to the Atlantic Ocean gave Merritt Island a strategic advantage. Rockets launched there could streak across the ocean without disturbing populated areas. Latitude was another plus. Florida is reasonably close to the equator. Where Earth's rotation speed is at? Its fastest when you set off a rocket in the sunshine state. The vessel can save fuel by capitalizing on this principle. It's why Merritt Island is now the home of Kennedy Space Center SPACEPORT NASA. Wasn't the first group. Take an interest in this region however the US military had been testing missiles on nearby Cape Canaveral since nineteen forty nine and then came snowbirds education homes and other seaside properties sprouted like daisies and the postwar economy. One piece of real estate was a two story. Beach House constructed in nineteen sixty two really. It was just another wood framed building in the Neptune beach subdivision at first Nessa partnered up with the Army Corps of Engineers to buy the entire development in nineteen sixty three four. Thirty one thousand five hundred dollars which is a little more than two hundred sixty six thousand eight hundred dollars in today's money neighboring houses and the gas station were cleared away but this plain Jane cottage escaped. The wrecking ball situated on government owned land. The Beach House is well off the beaten path in his two thousand six memoir astronaut. Richard Mike Mullane said the place was as isolated as Mars originally called the astronaut training and rehabilitation building. It started out as a home away from home. A place where crew members could get some shut. Eye on overnight stays as the decades past the bungalow evolved into more of a hang out. Spot astronauts could drop by individually or as crew many also chose to take their spouses and families over by design though. This isn't the easiest spot to access the space shuttle veteran Robert Springer who flew missions in nineteen eighty nine and nineteen ninety recalled. The Hannah's crewmates used to borrow the key from an acid staff member. A spontaneous visits were not encouraged. Though a one day payload specialist Samuel Durant's waltzed over with some colleagues but forgot to give the administrators any advance notice on their way back. The group was met by Swat team and guests had to play by the house rules. For example young children were barred from the premises. During astronaut quarantine periods. The House has entertained. Its share of politicians and diplomats. And to this day it remains an active meeting place for government organizations but among. Space History Buffs. This mid-century is remembered first and foremost as an explorers waystation filled with the stories of its tenants. There was the time that springer and a crewmate winter a dip in the ocean only to be met by helicopter full frantically waving airmen. It turned out. The swimmers had gotten a little too close to an enormous gang of sharks unaware of the danger and oblivious to the warning. The astronauts waved back. Don't worry everything turned out fine. Prelaunch barbecues are traditional shortly before his space takes off. It's customary for them to gather with family members of the cottage for muscles and Colm Rotary. Sometimes the guests get dinner and a show former Kennedy space center. Deputy Director James A gene. Thomas witnessed a cause play prank at one of these beach parties. The mission being toasted that day was set to include Franklin Story Musgrave a legendary astronaut. Who happened to be bald just for kicks. The rest of his crew decided to impersonate. Mas Great at this barbecue so everyone showed up with rubber latex sheets on their heads and name tags that read. Hi I'm story. Another longstanding tradition at the Beach. House involves leaving. Your mark. Outgoing crew will sign a wine bottle before they blast off official mission logos usually adorned these mementos by now. Few decades worth of space. Flights have been chronicled on bottlenecks and wine labels now can cabinet display in two thousand sixteen hurricane. Matthew did a number on the bungalow necessitating massive repairs inside and out once. The kitchens bathrooms multiple walls. And most of the second floor had been overhauled. The cottage reopened on July twenty fifth of twenty eighteen. We reached out to the Kennedy Space Center. Which informed us that. The House is not currently being used by any astronaut crews. But who knows? Maybe that'll change in the near future. Nasa does want to quote. Put the first woman in next man on the moon or the twenty twenty four no doubt future occupants will feel mixed emotions at the old beach house most astronauts do along with their loved ones. Donnellan. Mike's wife said in two thousand ten interview with NASA as a spouse. You know you're coming out here to say goodbye and you don't know if it's the last time yet by many accounts. Fear intermingled with excitement from the bungalow visitors have gotten some spectacular views of eager rockets ships ready for launch gleaning from the nearby space center.
Could We Be Entering an Era of Commercialized Space Exploration?
"I S A great deal to Nasr's defunct Space Shuttle Program Green Lit by then president Richard M Nixon in nineteen seventy two. This initiative gave the world its first reusable spacecraft from nineteen eighty one to two thousand eleven NASA astronauts into orbit on American made shuttles. These were often used to transport portions of the ISS during its construction on July Twenty first twenty eleven. The space shuttle. Eric came to an end. As the Atlanta's orbiter returned from its final mission with the program just continued. I S bound astronauts grew dependent on Russian Soyuz rockets. Then the law of Supply and demand took over for nearly a decade. No other rockets were capable of sending people to the ISS. All astronauts bound for that station had to be launched out of Kazakhstan Baikonour cosmodrome which is spaceport least to the Russian government and by April of two thousand twenty. The Russians were charging eighty six million dollars to include foreign astronauts in their Soyuz missions. Another Soyuz rocket launch is scheduled for October. And Breitenstein says NASA is currently negotiations to book a seat. Nevertheless it's hoped that the SPACEX x crew dragon will end the spaceflight monopoly. Rydin Stein explained. We want the russian-american relationship in space exploration to remain strong. We see a day. When Russian cosmonauts can launch on American rockets American astronauts can launch on Russian rockets by now space x the International Space Station? Have a fair bit of history. Using unmanned crafts the company has delivered supplies to the orbiting laboratory since two thousand twelve. The crew dragon aced dress rehearsal and March of two thousand nineteen when it left. Merritt island on the nose of a spacex Falcon nine rocket and autonomously docked with the International Space Station. Five days after its departure the crew track and returned to Earth splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean. Some one hundred and forty three miles or two hundred thirty kilometers a Florida's eastern coastline. But that trip only passengers were in earth shaped plush toy and a dummy named Ripley AB- named after Sigourney Weaver's character Ellen Ripley from the alien movie franchise a flight later. This month will be the first time that live. Astronauts will be on board space x crew mission director. Benjamin Reed said at the May First Conference Dragon will be fully autonomous. Expectation is that can carry the crew safely to the station and bring them home without direct intervention even so hurley and Bankin are set to take control for a short period before the crew dragon. Docs they'll be able to guide the vessel using touch screens or physical switches. Both options are available for certain portions of the journey while aboard cruise expected to test out such components as the maneuvering thrusters and in my own. Mental Control System. And then there's the spacesuits one piece outfits designed by SPACEX to supply the astronauts with oxygen provide the appropriate temperature and maintain pressure spacesuits plug into the crew dragons chairs when their wares. Sit down read. Said suits also have an integrated communication system so that the crew can communicate through their helmets. Neither Bank nor Hurley are strangers to low earth orbit. Lincoln's logged more than seven hundred eight hours in space and Hurley a member of NASA's last shuttle era crew back in two thousand eleven but every mission presents its own unique challenges like the rest of the world NASA space x and these two astronauts had to make adjustments during the krona virus taking extra precautions. So what does that mean? Both SPACEX and NASA have implemented social distancing protocols like keeping work desk six feet or two meters apart at their respective control rooms. Meanwhile the cruise getting a wide. Berth contact with them by any other team. Members has been minimized and many training sessions have been done. Virtually and the safety of is S. crew the astronauts will observe a preflight quarantine for May sixteenth until the launch on May twenty seventh. Right now. There are three space fares two Americans and a Russian living and working aboard the International Space Station. The length of Benjamin's and Harley stay at the facility will be determined at a later date it could last anywhere from five to thirty days when the time to head home arrives the crew tracking should undock Disley and deliver. Its human charges to Florida by way of the Atlantic. There's a long proud tradition of civilians gathering near the Kennedy Space Center to witness rocket launches. Unfortunately NASA is discouraging people from following suit this time lest they spread or contract Cova nineteen. But you can tune in and watch launch online for just the fifth time in history NASA astronauts will be test flying a new type of spacecraft should bankin an early complete their mission objectives. We may yet see a golden age of space tourism and innovation with private industry taking on development roles long adopted by governments Breitenstein. Said this really is the next major step. In commercializing low earth orbit and having a really vital low earth orbit economy in which NASA is one of many customers.
