"Officially historic. So that's sort of our barometer. All right. Did you get your own plaque or anything? I know. I feel like I need my own plaque, don't we all? Every decade, 50 and after, we should get a new plaque. I made it another decade, but I'm still here. What is your earliest garden memory? Wow, that's a really good question. Hmm. I would say one of my earliest garden memories is being with my Mimi, my grandmother. She and my papaw retired down to Merritt Island, Florida, even though they were from East Tennessee. She had orange trees, fruit trees, and lemon trees in her garden. I can remember from the time I was maybe four or five years old, falling behind her with a little bowl and she would tell me to hold it still as she was picking fruit and then we'd carry it inside. And then, of course, she would slice open an orange and we'd taste it and it'd be delicious. So that's probably one of my oldest memories. Yeah, that's a great one. What do you wish people would do differently when designing, building, or growing a garden or landscape? I think for me, just personally, I want people to think about their neighbors. Sometimes when people buy an old property and they'll put some huge extension on it and take out a lot of old trees and really think about how that's affecting everything around them, including the birds and the chipmunks and the squirrels and all the wildlife. I'd like also for people to think about when they're gardening to share plants. I really love pass -along plants is I guess what I call them or what my Mimi would have called them. I love walking out into my own garden and looking at a bulb, an old daffodil, or a camellia, or an old rose, something that I have that somebody I love gave. I like people to think about when they go out in the garden, how it connects to them personally and how it might connect to their great aunt or their grandmother, grandfather, or their mom or dad, somebody in their family.

Florida troopers helping residents recover in hos four near Tallahassee roofs ripped off homes and trees snapped. Hurricane force wind gusts up to 76 mph near Panama City, Florida, planes flipped over at Merritt island, following a month of unusually heavy rain, winds flooding and hail across the state. This, as the Midwest deals with historic flooding, the Mississippi River is cresting to dangerous levels, four states, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois, seeing the river rise to its highest level in decades and spilling out into communities. On Friday, the mid American energy company in the quad cities turning off the gas of more than 100 residents due to flooding as cities in Iowa braced for the worst. And all have now really kind of learned life lessons through flood fighting, especially in recent years. In California, the record snowpack is flooding parts of the central valley and prompting parts of Yosemite National Park to close starting Friday night. We want to avoid a potential emergency situation of guests and visitors getting stuck and not being able to get in and out of the park. More severe weather is expected to hit Texas and then move east towards the Florida Panhandle, damaging winds will be the biggest threat along with large hail and possible tornadoes. And my car, my personal car that 2021 has the antenna that's mounted on the back, the sharks in or whatever it's called. And it won't pick up a radio station if you're sitting next door to the station. Right, exactly. And I get so much grease from southern. I know this sounds negative, but I guess so much grief from some of the people around here. They'll say, well, why don't you just stream it? Why don't I do? I like to listen to a.m. radio. Absolutely. And yeah, I agree so much on my little a.m. that plays my obscure R&B oldies. I have an FM translator. And of course, you know, it's just lovely. And I go for a.m. every time. I wanted to sound like it sounded one of those record verse came out. I do too. And I just love listening to it, first of all, here in Central Florida, we have no radio. It's just awful. And that's why it's great here on the Space Center. I'm not here in the middle of nowhere, and your program is just great to be able to listen to. And I always get these looks in the morning when 6 30 comes, the end of my shift of course 7 20 pretty much disappears with fun coming up. So people get in this car and they go, what are you listening to all night? We are 7 20 on the dollar's death there, you know? So I think they don't believe I'm listening. I think so today I was over in cocoa Florida. It's a little town nearby. I'm sure you know where it's at. Oh, absolutely. Of course. And auto refurbishing place. I asked him, can I put an a can you I'll pay you? I have money. I worked. Can you put an a.m. antenna on my car? Or would you want that for? Because I want to listen to a.m.. That's why. Yeah, right. And so I'm not real comfortable at drilling a hole in a brand new car that I bought that are antenna in it. And just the looks you get from these millennials and generation xers or why do you need a.m. for? And the technician looks amazing and says, well, the short pin back there should here. Well, it doesn't. Exactly. You have to have an external antenna and the female that was standing in the shop where then I guess it was a daughter or something. She said, what is a.m. stand for alarm mode? No? That's a.m.. Forget it. I'm not even going to bother trying to explain it. All right, right. Amplitude modulation, lady. Yeah. And I think she's seen 7 20 on the dials of your clocks wrong too. So I know it's not 7 20, but that's another story. That's your blocks wrong here. That's classic. Yeah, and it was actually about 9 o'clock in the morning, you know? But it just seems like there's this war on about a.m. radio and vehicles today. So I understand some of the newer vehicles that are coming out now won't even have an a.m. radio. Electric cars in particular don't put them in. And because they don't want to spend the 27 cents to isolate it. Hang on a minute, don't go away. John just informed me that I'm blowing the news is to stay where you are. So there's uh, teaching going on in Frederick County, specifically a teacher, an English teacher and one of the schools. They're talking. They were getting grants for black lives matter, and, um they're talking about all the racial injustice and systemic racism, and they want to be able to empower young activists. Lo and behold, one of their young activists. She's a senior there, young lady. They have a club that they want to Have some bowls of, uh, doing visually representing diversity and inclusion advocate for more teachers of color represents students of color and to educate a non minority students. And lastly, reform the history curriculum in Frederick County public schools. Um and I'm just wondering if any of the other uh I wonder if the governor is awake. Is your governor awake? Oh, he doesn't seem to say anything about any of this, Does he? Nope. Nope. Not at all. You don't hear about any of this, and I just happened to stumble across this mark this evening just by doing it. Well, this is the difference between a Hogan and a De Santis. And Hogan's looking out from self in his own career. Such as it is at this point. The scientists is representing the will of the people. And let me tell you something else. This critical race theory and this transgender ism teaching In this hate America hate, uh, economics, our economic system stuff. It is so destructive. Of minorities as well. In other words, this again is a Marxist movement, which is destructive of everybody adds Wake It doesn't matter what your color is. So rather than teaching young Children that you're free that you have opportunity that You can look for mentors and and here's what we can do, and this is how you do it, and Teaching people how to how to maybe make a living or something. What do we have? Hey, Larry John, from Merritt Island. Hey, you're talking about how swamped busier shop is and how hard it is to move around in there and such. Have you put much thought into, you know, maybe looking at getting a second shop or a third shop or even just building yourself. A much bigger establishment. Um, you know, maybe that'll ease some of the pain. Uh, just thought Take care. Uh oh, Larry, I think I know the answer to this one. We got in this one before. Yeah, I I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I'm telling you Um, you Can't imagine you could. You could. You can run tire stores. You know, you can have all the tire stories you want. I mean, how back and they screw up tires and brakes and shocks. You see what I'm saying? But when you deal with the level of difficulty and and some of the older vehicles that we deal with, um there's just no way that me or J d can be in two and three places at the same time. I mean, it's just it's just impossible. Um, you know, and I It's like I would rather have. Yeah, I can open up shops and I'd be full of cars. But you know what my reputation would go to heck in a handbasket. It would be horrible because I wouldn't have the control. That I have here and and and just running One large shop is a It's a challenge. I mean, it is a challenge. It's not for the weak of heart. I mean, you know, it's Very few people can do this and and succeed at it, you know and actually fix the cars that come in. But, you know, we're proud of that aspect and but to have a bunch of different locations, I mean, I'd love to do that. But, you know, number number two. I don't know where you'd find the people the technicians to to fill the shop. You know, they're just It's Yeah, they can work on new stuff. But anything 10 years older, they wouldn't be able to do anything with it, You know? So it's It's really a challenge to that. You know, to this day and age, uh, the degree of difficulty that some of these cars are to repair properly. And if you spread yourself too thin, it would definitely come back and haunt you. I guess I know. You know a lot of people, you know, the more the merrier. But in this case, you know, I just have to stay with my own My one humble, uh, domain. Let's put it that away. I like that. All right? Yeah, that's staying your domain domains They were comfortable with when you can manage right now, because, yeah. It is busy, but busy is good. But again. Yeah, we've We've talked about this before Larry that it's just expansion would be great if it's possible, right, if even remotely possible, But at this point, we got the magic mechanic shop cooking. Welcome to the show. Hi. Thanks, Larry for taking my call. No problem, Man. I got a problem here. That's kind of frustrating. We've had it for a while. My son. It's my son's car and he's out of town today, but it's a 2014 June Cherokee latitude with the 2.4 engine automatic. Uh, from what I found on the Internet. It's It doesn't matter if it's a 2.4 or not, or even whether it's automatic, I guess, but the problem is, he can't fill it up with gas. If if he fails it all the way up. To wear it first clicks and he stops. He knows not there were fill it. That he will his car will stall. It will, uh, stutter. It will give in all kinds of grief until he's driven for a while, and evidently the gas moves down a little bit. And, uh, now he's at the point where he only keeps about half filled. He can't. If he makes a mistake and fills it up to the top, then he's going to have this problem. I looked on the Internet and I, and there are hundreds of comments and articles about this same problem. I've called the deep place the customer service. I've called the recall line. Have called the national highway safety transportation because they've got articles on their their website about it. And no one seems to have my answer to this. We've done a smoke tests. I've done to smoke test on this emission system, and they both passed. I've had several places tell me that they think it's the purge control valves. One place the the last place. We went to the service manager argued with me, And he said, No, it's it's the emissions tank itself. So I said, Okay, if that's what it takes, will change it. And whenever He started writing it up, and he said, You know, we should also change perch control valve and you know some other stuff. And I said, No, I said, maybe maybe just the canister like you said, And he said, Well, you need to take the car then because GPS a an investigation ongoing on this. Well, I called Yeah Testament service and the recall. Nobody knows about this problem. But you can find 1000 places on the Internet with the same problem. Oh, of course. Yeah, It's like this. All right, Michael. What's actually happening is when he fills the car up, you're getting raw gasoline going straight into the intake system of the car. And when he restarts this thing, he's basically starting a flooded engine. And until it gets all this gasoline, you know that's flooding the motor out and found him spark plugs out of its system. It runs terrible. So, you know, I mean, it could be anything from, uh, controls Illinois to you know, uh, purge valve, something something is allowing fuel to get into the intake. When he fills the tank. Um, you know, I know what the problem is. I mean, there's no secret to the problem. There's only one thing is going to calls that and that's gasoline, raw gasoline getting into the engine. When he shuts it off, and he fills it up. Um, usually the cell annoyed. Uh, the the You know, the that alleviates the positive pressure will close when you shut the vehicle off. And what it will do is that purge valve allow excessive pressure to actually vent through charcoal canister. So you don't get gasoline smells. I got in to Fell into the career. I moved here to santa bell and i was For eight years. I worked here as an education specialist as and then And then supervisory park ranger before jumping up into management..

"It was January nineteen, seventy four, the future was bright or so I thought. I had just completed my formal education after returning from Vietnam. Only twenty two months earlier. I was ready and anxious to land a job flying for American Delta Eastern or United Airlines. My timing couldn't have been worse. The country was in the middle of what we were calling a fuel crisis. The airlines were not expanding. With no immediate job prospects I decided, it would be a good time to pursue my airline transport rating later changed to airline transport pilot or ATP. Raleigh. Durham aviation offered ATP training, and was also assessment dealer. So I trained in a brand new Cessna three, ten q immediately after my check ride, the airplane was sold to a business in Richland's Virginia. A day or two. Later, the salesman who sold the three ten called and asked me if I would be interested in a job flying a beach baron for a business also based in Richmond. Virginia, the pilot currently flying the baron was going to work for the company that had just bought the three ten. I said I was interested. So he told me to catch an early flight the next day to Tri Cities Tennessee where the pilot leaving the job flying the baron would meet me. I arrived early the next morning. The pilot from Richland's was a nice guy, a couple of years older than me. He had come to the United States to attend flight school and build flight experience with plans to return to Denmark and fly for the country's airline. We departed tri cities with me at the controls and headed for. RICHLAND's I. had not taken the time to familiarize myself to the area. So I simply followed his instructions. Arriving over richland's a short time. Later, he advised me to begin my descent and start a teardrop turn to the right. He explained that we had just passed over the town of Richland's. He knew that because he had tuned in the AM radio station located in downtown Richland's on the ATF. He said I needed to maintain a seven hundred and fifty feet per minute descent while turning. As we entered the clouds, he told me to tighten the turn. I was already in a standard rate turn, but I complied, and we soon broke out of the clouds at about a thousand feet above the ground with the small town of Richland's in front of us. That's when it dawned on me. We had just descended between two ridge lines and into valley. I asked the pilot if you regularly flew into and out of Richland's using this method and he said, he did he told me, it was no big deal. Just crossed the AM radio station on a heading of zero, three zero degrees and descend at a rate of seven hundred and fifty feet per minute while making a teardrop turn to the right. At greater than standard rate right I added. I learned the owner of the Baron had grown accustomed to operating out of Richland's even at night as long as ceilings were at least a thousand feet, not me. Once on the ground, the pilot wished me luck and departed around five PM. The lobby erupted two men and two women entered walking fast with the guy in the lead talking loudly. As. They entered the guy in the lead. Saw Me and said you must be the pilot from Raleigh. I acknowledge that I was So he said file for Merritt Island Florida and let's get going. I filed an I F, our flight plan, and we were soon off the ground. The owner sat up in front with me, which was fine until he reached up and retarded the throttles right after breaking ground. I, put my hand up to stop him. But he had already pulled them back to climb power. He informed me the engines would last longer if we didn't keep them at full power so long. I told him. I had learned most engine failures occur at first power reduction. So I preferred to wait until reaching a couple of hundred feet before reducing to climb power. It was certainly a debatable point and it was his airplane. So nothing else was set. We landed in. Merritt Island Florida at about eight thirty PM, I was looking forward to getting to a hotel and kicking back, but it was not to be while taxiing into the F. B. O., the owner said, okay. Go back to Richland's and pick up three guys that will be waiting for you and bring them down here. I was stunned. It was at that moment I decided I would not be taking this job. I thought I would do. As he asked knowing, this would be the last time I would be subjected to him. I refilled the airplane filed an Afar flight plan for Bluefield West, Virginia and took off heading north. Bloomfield was the closest airport to Richland's with instrument approach if the weather was good. Enough. I. Would cancel the I. Afar Flight Plan and fly visually to the desired destination. Not Tonight. The weather at the destination wasn't too bad. But it would be late and I would be tired. So I called ahead and told my passengers to meet me in Bluefield. It was a little after midnight when I arrived the weather wasn't too bad. But bad enough to require an instrument approach. I was glad I made the decision to meet my passengers in Bluefield. Putting on fuel and filing an IOF, our flight plan back to Merritt. Island took only a half hour or so and my excited and well lube passengers and I were off for the final flight of the day. After takeoff. The Tower released me to departure control about the time I entered the clouds. A minute or two after contacting departure control? I lost communications. All engine navigation instruments were working fine. Everything was good except my communication radios, I turn them off and back on. I, check the circuit breakers. No good. I. Couldn't hear the controllers and I presumed they couldn't hear me. My clearance was to expect nine thousand feet, ten minutes after departure. So ten minutes into the flight, I climbed to nine thousand feet from my initially assigned altitude. I had already changed my transponder to squawk seventy, six hundred when the radio suddenly started working after a couple of hours, I contacted Jacksonville Center and was asked twice who I was. Later that day I briefed the owner about the radio problem. He said I could take the airplane to Daytona and have it repaired which I did. After two days in Merritt, island, I flew the owner and three others back to Richland's Virginia. I rode with the owner to his office and he informed me how much he was going to pay me to fly for him. I, told him. I wouldn't be taking the job. He paid me for my time. Reimbursed me for my airline flight and had me driven to Tri Cities Airport for my flight back to Raleigh. Sadly. The story doesn't end there. A. Couple of weeks. Later, I got a call from the salesman who had sold the Cessna three ten. He told me the Danish pilot with four passengers aboard had flown the new three ten into the side of a mountain, just outside of Richland's.

What Is NASA's Astronaut Beach House?
"Astronauts are driven disciplined physically fit and trained to solve complex problems in high stakes situations. But of course sometimes they just want to get away from it all from the press the physicians and the rigors of flight prep. You've gotTa make time to sharpen the saw. But where on earth can these people find a little seclusion? Well M- since nineteen sixty. Three Nasr's kept a bungalow on the East Florida coast closed to the general public. It's been a welcome retreat for generations of astronauts barbecues and bottles signings are cherished pastimes at the hideaway so are fond farewells. Historically this was the last place where many space bound crews got to hang out with their families before launch. Here's the story of the Kennedy Space Center Beach House and Conference Center or the Beach House. For Short Florida. Nasa go a long way back in nineteen sixty one. It was decided that the agency would build a new launch center on Florida's Merritt Island which is technically a peninsula by the way other sites were considered including New Mexico's White Sands missile range. Where the first atomic bomb had been set off sixteen years prior proximity to the Atlantic Ocean gave Merritt Island a strategic advantage. Rockets launched there could streak across the ocean without disturbing populated areas. Latitude was another plus. Florida is reasonably close to the equator. Where Earth's rotation speed is at? Could We Be Entering an Era of Commercialized Space Exploration?
