The reality is probably more that Russia is in pretty deep need of munitions and North Korea has a few. Well, we will be looking at the UN this week, the big meeting up in New York, and Zelensky President will be here in the United States in Washington, DC, meeting with President Biden in 30 seconds or so. What's your take on that meeting? You know, I expect that there'll be a lot more discussion about what types of arms we will provide to Ukraine. And you know, I expect that it will go well. I suspect that the Ukraine is very concerned about the upcoming election and how that could potentially change support in the US. So there's probably be some discussion around that as well. Meredith, always good to talk to you. We'll see you next week. Meredith Wilson, CEO of Emergent Risk International on WTOP. Now a quick look at the top stories that we're working on at WTOP. Okay so another one major concern about throughout the war has been the delivery of grain to Africa and other markets in need Russia just started a naval blockade of Black Sea ports a few weeks ago after it quit a United Nations deal to allow the shipment of grain will that blockade hold in your opinion in your view? I think their hold on this is probably limited I think they've got a certain amount of time before they're going to be under pressure to do something but it probably really comes down to players like Turkey. What's probably more important to note though is that Ukraine and NATO countries are working other options that will export grain regardless. So a new deal with Romania made last week for example will eventually allow Ukraine to ship about 60 percent of its grain via Romania. Okay so do you expect the change in food prices as here a result of these changes? I would expect continued volatility I think when we look at commodity pricing in 2022 when it was sky high I don't think it will go that high again. There's not quite that kind of reactivity partially down to Russia putting a lot of its own wheat exports on but the market food prices in general aren't coming down substantially anytime soon beyond just grain the issue. There are issues with rice exports and all of these other commodities right now not to mention fuel prices so the inflationary pressure is still going to be there and prices are still going to stay high. Water levels there are going down thanks to a severe drought. It could translate at a higher shipping cost to get these goods to market, which means more money from your wallet. Meredith Wilson is the Chief Executive Officer at Emergent Risk International. It's a risk advisory firm. She joined our Liz Anderson earlier to help explain the connection between the problems in Panama and here. I think the easiest way to explain it is longer shipping times generally equals higher costs. Forty percent of U .S. cargo actually transits the canal, but starting today larger container ships will have to reduce their cargo substantially to make the weight requirements to go through the canal because there's less water. That's by as much as 40 percent of their usual loads. What that means is slower transit times. It means more boats with less in them and that of course means higher costs for consumers at some point. Okay oh wow so it's not just what we import they could also have an impact on American exports including energy so how is that? So one of the major changes in energy markets in the last decade is that U the .S. has become a major energy exporter. Most of these shipments go to places like Asia, places like Japan. The cargos usually deport from the U .S. Gulf Coast so Louisiana, Texas and they go to Asia via the canal. With the drought related restrictions and congestions if this gets worse, that means that they have to take this longer route that goes through the Suez Canal towards Europe. That is a 34 day travel time versus a 21 for a ship going through the canal so you're adding all of these big cost LNG and all of these energy supplies coming out of the U .S. which of course pushes up the price of energy commodities. You have almost the exact same route for agriculture so grain exports going to Asia, same thing this drives the price back up again. And what about national security? Can you explain impact that as well? Yeah, so the U .S. sees the Panama Canal as a major strategic asset. It is considered both a key national security priority as well as a key economic priority because of that shortened transit time makes it easier for U .S. military assets to get to Asia or to Europe via the canal much quicker than it would any other way. So should that point become unavailable whether it's because of a drought or for geopolitical reasons that would impact our both overall economy as well as our military readiness. anapolis we've been keeping you up to date we will continue to do that an earlier crash 50 between baydale and richie highway has two left lanes blocked on the westbound side eastbound the has one left lane blocked and there's still an investigation going on there here's the issue if you're coming back from the beach your delay starts at about kent narrows and if you know that drive it's way a long from kent narrows so you get to the bridge the bridge is bumper to bumper and then you've still got a fair amount of time time before you get up to where the accident was now the good news is they've opened some lanes it down was shut for about two hours and so you should start to see some relief the question is when the side roads are still jammed so if you can avoid it still the best time to do that on the eastbound side you've got some delays that are well before route Boulevard before you get to the accident scene that accident scene in area the of red hot and blue so if you know that between Ralph Boulevard in there pretty long trip taking a look around the Capitol Beltway you do see some volume delays no reports of anything in the roadway 95 on Virginia the side you've got some delays in Newington it gets pretty heavy warden across the Occoquan again Dale in City Dale you'll see some delays, dump freeze and then as you make your way down into the Fredericksburg area Thanks for being with us as 2023 nears the halfway point. Here's some good news homicides in most of America's largest cities are falling down 12 % compared with the same period last year. It's part of a nationwide trend that appears to coincide with a variety of factors like the end of the pandemic. Meredith Wilson is the executive officer of Urgent Risk International, a strategic intelligence and advisory firm. She joined our Dan Ronen earlier to give her analysis. From 2020 to 2022 we saw huge spikes in homicides amid a few really important trends sharply increased drug and alcohol use increased social political upheaval significant spikes in mental health distress and a really big rise in retirements and designations from police departments. So all of that's now in reverse. Assaults and non -fatal shootings are down. Another change has been in policing itself so almost every city in the country is enacting some type of policing reform. In many cities, but not all, this has been successful in creating a lot better trust between police and the community and that's also helping. Here in the district we appear to be moving in the opposite direction though and one of the things that the police keep saying is that they've had a great deal of turnover in the Metropolitan Police Department. Yes this is true in fact you know that's the important thing is the US is not a monolith and you know in one place you may have crime rates going up and another going down. There's a lot of disagreement in DC about what's actually driving this. The mayor says broken criminal justice system that allows offenders back on the street too quickly. She also points out there's a kind of a confused system of governments between federal local and control but as you say the police union has said that police reform itself might be partially to blame and they've noted that they've lost 1200 police officers since 2020. While homicides are down, other crimes, robberies, carjackings, they're going up. Yep and in fact the the retail in crime issue particular the in National Retail Federation says some of this is insider theft and the other big problem is organized retail criminal theft where they go in and they steal a whole bunch of stuff and turn around and sell it on Amazon and all of that went up during the pandemic as well and they're still really struggling to control that. Meredith Wilson Emergent Risk International. Now to the top stories we're working on at WTOP. A shooting in Annapolis leaves three dead and three others injured. "Law. The move can make it riskier for everyone to operate in the communist country from foreign companies to journalists and academics. Here with more Meredith Wilson, she's chief executive officer of emergent risk international. Good morning Meredith. Morning Liz. So sum up what the Chinese are doing and why they're doing so. So as you say, Liz, China already had a pretty rigorous espionage law in place. But what it's done with these recent changes in a nutshell is that everyday business activity could now be interpreted as a national security threat. So specifically the law expands the definition of illegally providing state secrets to purchasing or illegally providing documents, data, materials, or items related to national security. And so the U.S. and China are the world's two biggest economies, what impact could this have on trade and investment in the overall economic climate? So the sort of new vague espionage definition gives them a lot broader authority to arrest or expel businesses for doing every day sort of due diligence investigations. Looking at employees that might be engaged in illegal or unethical behavior. And potentially even allows them to seize intellectual property. So businesses are really going to be left with this choice of operating without those guardrails of proper due diligence, investigation, or potentially subjecting themselves to FCPA charges here in the U.S. because they haven't done that due diligence. So it's going to make it just that much harder for businesses and NGOs and academics to operate there. Okay. And so the Titan counter espionage law is set against this backdrop of a deteriorating relationship between the U.S. and China. Which some analysts say are at their lowest and perhaps the most dangerous level in years. So what do you think will happen next? So I think China and the U.S. are both trying to figure out a way to deescalate, but neither one of them wants to look as if they're backing down. So at the same time, they're sort of working at odds with that. And they're passing laws in both countries here in the U.S. and in China that are going to make it harder to maintain good economic ties. Despite the fact that it's been acknowledged by both sides that we simply can't afford not to have economic ties between the two countries. But it leaves limited prospects on the horizon. In the end, economic ties are going to go on. And it's not going to cause immediate physical conflict, but there's increasing collateral damage to businesses and eventually to maintaining relations altogether. Oh, thank you so much, Meredith. We appreciate your time this morning. Thanks, Liz. Have a great day. Thanks. Same to you. That's Meredith Wilson, CEO of emergent risk international

Sorry to discuss. Not so fast, my friend. Remember we were talking about small town festivals together. Christie has one. The turtle. Turtle days and cherubs go Indiana. My Fort Wayne has a mermaid festival day. It's a whole thing. Where is it? North Webster Indiana? Because mermaid festivals. In coalinga, California, they celebrate this is from Andrew. We celebrate the horn toad turbie. Horn toad Derby. I'm so excited. I can't say. Really? It's a four day event with a parade for the toads and rides on Saturday. They have the horn toad Derby race. Those rides for frogs must be real small. Yeah. And they race horn toads, cut that out. They gather local horn toads. They gather at local horn toads from the mountains and the first one to get out of the horn toad for get out of the circle wins. What is the name of the town? Really? I thought you might find that. And every Memorial Day weekend, we have the annual band festival parade, which is the largest free matching band competition in the Midwest. He says plenty of Barry sacks and bassoons for times. All right. You should go there. Meredith Wilson has indeed been the grand marshal of this parade. In addition, the music man won the 1958 Tony Award for best musical over none other than west side story. Oh. Oh. If you had to pick your favorite between the two, which would it be, Tom? Music man or west side story. I've seen them both on Broadway. This is like picking your favorite kid. You don't chop up a baby. Well, but that's Sam. We all know it. I get it. He's nice. He's cool. He's strong. I want to find out where the mermaid is in north Webster, Indiana. It's called the mermaid festival.

Well, federal environmental authorities have ordered a temporary halt in the shipment of contaminated waste from the side of a fiery train derailment in Ohio. And that's after officials have heard concerns from residents and people from other states. No one was hurt in the derailment itself, but there were fears of a potential explosion, so folks were evacuated from their homes. Now, if this trained derailment wasn't enough, there's another type of damage, a flood of false narratives and misinformation and disinformation that have spread widely over social media, making it harder for citizens to get real and accurate information. And this sort of thing is pretty common now in the wake of any incident, whether it's a mass shooting, a storm, so forth, and so on. To talk more about it, we're joined by Meredith Wilson of emergent risk international. Good morning, Meredith. How are you? Good. Good morning, Liz. So Meredith, what are some of the false narratives that have been spreading about this train derailment in east palestin, Ohio? Well, like you said, Liz, this is kind of par for the course any time there's a disaster now. In this case, some of the claims are these very extreme social media posts claiming a false flag type thing where it was intentional. There are other ones that are a little more nuanced and a little bit more misinformation driven. There was one suggesting that the real company was literally only offering $5 to each resident as some kind of payout. In reality, there's the company is going to end up spending a substantial amount of money to remediate all of this. But that initial claim appeared to come from an early payout of $25,000 that the company had given to the government there, which somebody then went and said, okay, well, divided by the number of residents, that's $5 per person. So sometimes it's things like that where they get misinterpreted. Oh, okay. Okay, so why has it been difficult to get accurate information out to get the facts out? I think we're in a very fractured media landscape and of course the issue too has been heavily politicized and it's been seized on by people on the right and the left for their own kind of political gain. Ohio, of course, being a battleground state for any upcoming election. It's also been a headline issue for a lot of our major sort of media pundits who do these sort of information opinion pieces on TV at night. Not always with the correct information and oftentimes with sound bites that are not fully accurate. And of course, the biggest thing is social media and the imagery and the video has been very dramatic. If you saw the controlled explosion that they did, it looked a bit like a nuclear mushroom cloud. And so when people grab onto that kind of imagery and then attach their own opinions and oftentimes disinformation and that goes viral, that's where a lot of people are picking up this stuff. So this will be the final question. How do you think all of this affects the average American? I think the long and short of it is that this is another reminder of what we are going to be facing with the 2024 elections coming up and this very heavily politicized environment that we're living in. And it's a good reminder that when we are looking at situations like this, we really need to focus on those primary sources of information. The government agencies, the press releases that go out, the actual statements as they were made, not as their clipped up by the media. And really understand what's available to you out there when it comes to good primary source information and not relying on these kind of social media and that type of thing for your information. Thank you so much. Much appreciated that's Meredith Wilson of emergent risk international. And coming up on must be getting close to spring is baseball and soccer return to action. Well, we'll just have to see if the weather cooperates day Brooks is on the way with sports. You know how it feels to find an extra French fry in the bottom of the bag? "I'd like to welcome to the show Sarah brewers from travel with Sara, dot com, and also mid west travel network, DOT COM and oddly enough we're going to talk about the mid West and specifically serious here to talk to us about Iowa Sarah Welcome to the show. Thank you for having me. I'm excited to be here excellent well and I put out the. Word among my travel blogger brethren and written and I don't think that this thing put a couple of weeks ago and said, I've got three missing states I missing Iowa Nebraska and Hampshire, and at least one person I think it was more than one said if you want Iowa have to talk to Sarah and why is that? Sarah. What's the connection to Iowa? Well I live in Iowa. I have lived here all my life and I live on I will farm I'm married the neighbor boy in two thousand eight I started a blog and it was in two thousand thirteen that I really dove into the travel side of things. But the one thing that I realize is a lot of people didn't know a whole lot about the mid West or my home state of Iowa in. Most people don't realize that I will has beautiful cornfields and soybean fields we have that, but we have a lot of other amazing things and that's why you need to come to Iowa to visit and we're GONNA get into all of those today and I can't wait to share I. Clinical Slices a paradise will normally ask why someone should go I. Think you jumped into that one ahead of time anything else you would add to that I will surprise you I think the art, the culture, the scenic byways will blow you away. You could spend probably one home month exploring Iowa's scenic byways and I think that's pretty darn. Cool excellent will and where are you going to take us to what you're gonNA recommend where we starting. Well, let's start and do and. North, central. Iowa. Route, which is near where I live. I live near Mason. City. Mason. City Clear Lake and we're GONNA go to Charles City those three towns there, and then he can go up to forest city where you can see we're winnebago motorhomes are made. So you start in Mason city, Mason cities, a great base camp, and I would recommend that you stay in the park in hotel. The parking hotel is the last known hotel in the world designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Can stay there. Okay. People come from all over the world to Mason City Iowa population twenty six thousand something. So I have to Mason City, but I stayed in the holiday and see this is my mistake. You need to come back and see if the. I'll give you the grand old tour I. Didn't know he had designed any hotels. That's true. The first thing people say to me is Oh I don't think I could afford to stay there. and. I'm telling you that rooms at the Parken Hotel in Mason city. Iowa. Are Very affordable. I'm talking one twenty, nine to one, fifty, nine at night in a historic hotel. Designed by Frank Lloyd. Wright. I mean that is amazing. So when you're in Mason City, you want to do the river city's sculptures on parade, which is a sculpture walk, and it's always fun because I travel a lot and you know these artists that create these sculptures are all across America and maybe some of you've seen the Humpty dumpty sculpture that's around. I. Know I'M Thinking, the last place I saw one was in Mesa Arizona Okay I just have to take a Selfie with it because I'm like here's how you know Humpty kind of manages to be wherever I am but the sculptures are really a nice walk because they also take you through the Rock Glen area in Mason City, which is where there are other Frank Lloyd Wright designed homes. So is not only the hotel. There's other homes there as well and McKnight or art museum is a fantastic museum in town. They have the bayard puppets, Baird Marionettes, wizard of Oz the marionnettes that we're using the wizard of Oz are in the museum in Mason City and you can go across the street to Music Man Square we what puppets were in wizard of Oz are we talking about flying monkeys or what? Yes. Monkey is there okay it's a really Nice Museum but then you go across the street and you go to Meredith Wilson's boyhood. Home The music man. So, Meredith Wilson was born in Mason city. Iowa. And the Music Man Square has museum in there that is home to. Meredith Willson. So in the streetscape is in there and it looks just like in the movie, but you would envision it. So that's pretty cool. Meredith Willson he's also buried in Mason City and you know what? There's a lot of people that look for famous people were buried. You know who knew a lot of people cemetery tourism is kind of a big deal but then you go, let's go estimates saying you've already Charles City and get to Whitewater rafting most people don't think of Iowa and Whitewater rafting. And you can do that in Charles City Iowa. In Charles City I'm not sure eight, ten thousand people maybe. And you can stay in a luxury cabin there at red? Cedar. Lodge cabins that are overlooking the river great place for extended families to stay. But you've got the river
