Alabama: The Newest Amazon Union Battleground
"Okay lena to understand. What is happening at this alabama warehouse. I'm guessing we should start by looking at some history. Yes and i spoke to just the person for that. Monday is gym specially and i'm a voca auditor for mercedes benz. Us international. We do audits on vehicles. After they're built jim as a very unique perspective on the union voted amazon because his mercedes plant. That was the epicenter of the last time. A super high profile labor battle played out in the state of alabama. And it makes sense that we'd be talking about auto plants because of course. A lot of foreign automakers have been opening factories in the south for decades. Now alex since the nineties yes they brought a lot of new jobs and jim you know he loves his job but he has a pretty glum view of why these foreign car companies came to the south in the first place the coming here because of the fact that there is not a fear of unions. You know they're saying we're just not educated. You know country bumpkins and whatnot. They don't know nothing about unions and don't care a lot of this stems from to work laws and all this other states which say that each worker can choose not to pay union dues still. The auto industry is historically pretty unionized. So the big auto union. The united auto workers decided to go after these new southern factories prompting intense anti union campaigns all labor experts. I talked to about unionization in alabama. Brought up this period of time. Like michael innes jimenez from the university of alabama the board that i'll never forget. Do you want tuscaloosa to be the next detroit. Let's throw race in there too. Obviously but seeing this post industrial city in a lot of pain and blaming the unions and then something incredible happened. workers at volkswagen in. Tennessee voted against the union and vw was the one company that actually wanted a union. It was the governor and republican lawmakers who fought against it from the air things just unraveled nissan workers in mississippi also rejected. The union at jim spits lease mercedes. Plant in alabama. Uaw didn't even petition for a vote. What it all comes down to is getting that vote and we haven't got that in twenty five years on three attempts so this sets the stage for where we are. Now this is. Why alina been asking you. How alabama became the first state to potentially have a unionized amazon warehouse. Right that's why so many people find it surprising. But i actually think that could be one of the three main reasons why this warehouse got to a union votes. So quickly we know amazon has stamped out union attempts and other places perhaps. The company also wasn't expecting such aggressive organizing in alabama compared to more traditionally Activist places. That's factor number. One are the other two to others are about the time and the place. Then let's start with a time. This is one of the things. I heard from the union. That's helping organize amazon workers in bessemer. The unions called the retail wholesale and department store union. And it's president. Stuart applebaum pointed out that this warehouse is only about a year old so it opened right as the pandemic started. I believe that the pandemic opened a lot of people is they understand now that they need a collective voice to stand up for themselves and to protect themselves. I also think that people had expectations when they came in that were not being realized. Amazon has been raking in profits during the pandemic which workers often bring up and also amazon went on a massive hiring spree and this by the way is often when workers ended up gaining some more power which is when they know that the employer needs more workers. The retail union folks say the best. My warehouse workers reached out to them quietly in the summer. They were describing grueling productivity quotas. They wanted to have more say in how they work. How they get disciplined. How they get fired. The union then mobilized support system of other folks from the region who are already unionized particularly workers from poultry plants. Okay and that brings us to your third factor alina. Which is the place right exactly. Professor michael innes jimenez pointed out something notable about alabama on that few people might realize if you follow the border and the coastline between california and maryland. alabama has the highest unionization rate for every state between california maryland. and then throw in tennessee. Also it's a pretty low rate. Only about eight percent of alabama workers are union members which is lower than the national average. But it is higher than all other southern states. And then you've got the specific location of the amazon warehouse which has bessemer. It's a working class. Suburb of birmingham. It's got early roots. In steel and mining and unionized labor. And another thing about bessemer is that it's a community that's predominantly black and the amazon unionization campaign is evoking social justice themes focusing a lot on respect in the workplace and of course this is all happening on the heels of the black lives matter protests. Yes exactly but the union also presented as part of its history. Its members marched with martin luther king junior in the sixties the union president talks about how in the south labor and civil rights battles have always been intertwined and so alina people think that all of these things at the time the place the context will end up making a difference and give alabama. The nation's first unionized amazon warehouse. the union. certainly hope so folks there told me more than half of the workers at the bessemer warehouse signed petitions for union shop. So they think this could be it of course amazon for its part has led a big anti-union campaign. They've got required meetings where workers were told. How union dues our waste of money. How great these jobs are already with all the benefits and the starting wage of fifteen dollars an hour and for context. The minimum wage in alabama is also the federal minimum wage which is seven dollars. Twenty five cents an hour which makes amazon starting wage of fifteen dollars an hour. More than double the alabama minimum. That is actually a big point four. Jim spits lee over the mercedes benz plant as he's watching this big amazon union. Vote play out it'll send a nami ripple but it's going to send one. It's going to let people know that. Hey even people fifteen dollars an hour. Seventeen dollars an hour can have union in their workplace. Bessemer warehouse workers will be voting by mail through the end of march. If this votes exceeds at an anti union place like amazon in alabama. This could turn a whole new page for both the

Alabama Could Be Home To Amazon's First Unionized Warehouse In The U.S.
"Amazons first unionized warehouse in America. That groundbreaking prospect is playing out in an unlikely place Alabama if workers from a facility near Birmingham vote to unionize next month. They would turn a new page not only for the company but also the region. MPR's Alina Cell yuk reports long before the warehouse was even built. Local officials called it a game changer. Amazon is coming to the funeral of government, the city of Bessemer, Alabama, Birmingham's working class suburb, a shadow of the steel and mining hub. It used to be. Amazon jobs paying over double the local minimum wage, promised a shot in the arm. Here's mayor kind of Cali talking about Amazon's arrival on Birmingham, CBS, 4200 and 30 Year. History of the city of Boston market is the largest single investment. But less than a year after the facility opened, it became a different kind of game changer. Amazons First American warehouse to get to a union election. Next month, 5800 workers of the best more warehouse will begin voting on whether to join the retail wholesale in department store union. Here's President Stuart Apple bound for things that is most important for them is to be treated with respect, he says. Best in more workers reached out to the union quietly in the summer, describing ruling productivity quotas wanting more say In how Amazon staff work how they get disciplined or fired a support system mobilized from unionized workers around the region, many from poultry plants Within months, the union says more than half of the warehouse workers signed cards to petition for unionization, leading the National Labor Relations Board to schedule an election. I believe that the pandemic opens a lot of people size, they understand now better than they ever did before. That they need a collective voice to stand up for themselves and to protect themselves. Jim spits. Lee has wanted that voice for years. He works down the interstate from the best summer warehouse at a Mercedes Benz plant, and he's watching this Amazon vote with interest because his factory was the epicenter of the last high profile labor battle in Alabama. You know, That's what it all comes down to is getting that vote and we haven't got that in 25 years. On three accounts. They came close in the 20 tens when the United Auto Workers Union tried to make inroads at foreign auto plans moving to the American South. They're coming here because of the fact that there is not fear of unions. You know, they're saying that we're just not educated, you know, country bumpkins and whatnot. They don't know nothing about unions and don't care. Nothing. Anti union sentiments are comin around the region, Alabama and many states around it have right to work laws, which mean every worker can choose not to pay union dues. Here's Michael in this human is a professor of the University of Alabama. The billboard that I'll never forget. Do you want Tuscaloosa to be the next Detroit? You know there's still race in there, too, obviously, But, you know, seeing this post industrial city in a lot of pain and blaming that on the union's spits lease plans never got a union election. At several auto plants in the region. Workers voted against joining the U A W even at folks Wagon and Tennessee, where the company welcomed unionization. Now specially wonders if an Amazon Union might shake things up. It'll it'll send not a tsunami ripple, but it it's gonna send one of all the Southern States Industry menace points out. Alabama actually has the highest percentage of unionized workers and best summer specifically has union history. Now It's a community that's predominantly black. The Amazon Union campaign is evoking social and racial justice themes, union president Applebaum says in the South labor and civil rights struggles have often been intertwined. We have a proud tradition of being involved in the civil rights movement, and we see the effort that Amazon at this warehouse is being a continuation of that. Amazon has argued that the workers pushing to unionize do not represent the majority of its staff's views. The company touts its pay and benefits and it's pushing to delay the election, appealing for the vote to take place in person instead of by mail, despite current virus concerns. Mercedes reveals giant 56-inch, AI-enabled 'Hyperscreen' for upcoming electric car
"Listeners. It's brett molina and welcome back to talking tech. My co host. Mike cider is off today. Recently mercedes-benz announced plans for a fifty six inch curved screen that nearly spans the width of a new cars interior. That just sounds incredible. Saying it out loud. The hyper screen will debut the spring. And it's new electric sedan the mercedes benz s. It's part of a growing trend among automakers to make your car's function more like computers but are all these screens and other tech safe joining us now is money reporter and i believe green bay packers. Fan nathan bomi. Thanks for joining us brett. How are you. I'm good so you ask the question in your story about this topic and whether bigger is actually better what did you find out well. Fifty six screen is john. I mean we've never seen a screen like this in a vehicle and you know it depends on who you ask. Whether it's safe or not the mercedes benz says it safe and And safety advocates are concerned. I mean you know. The first company that really started to pioneer big screens and vehicles was tesla model s a luxury sedan and then later with the model three and other vehicles and they basically put a tablet screen at the center console in place of a lot of the old fashioned analog buttons but mercedes is taking this to a new level by basically extending the screen across the vehicle screen even now encompasses the instrument cluster. So this is a really a step toward bigger and bigger. And i think we're going to continue to see. Other automakers follow suit so it's weird hearing all these announcements about these giant screens and cars considering how much we've been told about smartphones in the dangers of having those and using those waller driving. How do automakers plan to tackle all these additional screens and cars. Well the most important thing is to keep people's eyes on the road that's really the challenge and so if there's a screening vehicle but you keep your eyes on the road it should be safe for the most part the problem of course with smartphones is oftentimes people are fumbling for them with their hands and they take their eyes off the road and then he ended up getting into an accident driver. Distraction is really serious crisis for this country and so we obviously want to avoid that here. Now when i asked the ceo of daimler on a conference call a couple of weeks ago how they incorporated safety concerns into the design of the hyper screen. He said that they actually designed it to ensure that people don't have to take the eyes off the road for example if ape. The passenger is looking at the screen. Has some sort of video plane on the screen In in front of them essentially in the front seat and the driver takes their eyes off the road and looks at the screen. The vehicle be able to recognize that. I've movement and stopped the film from airing on the front passenger seat Screen which is wild and then if you put your is back on the road than it keeps playing. This is some really high tech stuff. And you know we'll see if it works now at my understanding is that particular technology will not be in use in the us because of safety concerns here but it will be in use and other countries. I wouldn't be surprised if the regulations eventually change here to allow it so with all these fisted systems coming in cars. How long before this starts to change how we learn how to drive. I think it will you know. I think we're talking about things like augmented reality windshields being the next step. Where essentially you'll basically have a directions projected onto the screen that we if you've seen a new vehicle driven a new vehicle anytime recently you may have experienced what's called heads up display which is where. There's a tiny in a projected box. Bright above your instrument cluster on the windshield. That essentially will show you for example what speed. You're traveling but in reality windshield would project like an arrow onto the road head of you to say turn this way or that way and so. That's the next

"Really challenging and there's a high power charges going in. I'm while fifty kilowatts walls fine a few years ago and even i'm saying that someone who drives a car that charges on a twenty two twenty two kilowatt. Ac on the zoe. So i'm hardly wants to complain. Because i got a very slow charging ebay and it doesn't affect impact me rarely but still the wider picture. I do think a hundreds perhaps a little bit slow for a premium car. Maybe one two five one fifty at least a peak great. Look if if it's one hundred kilowatts pretty much holds that charge rate for the entire like the like the like the out each on. That's absolutely fine. If you are wanting to turn up a charger with a very low state of charge whakatane of juice into it. Let you do with a tesla that will go up to two fifty on a on a three supercharge that ramps down so quickly like that's the that's the absolute peak rate than it. Ramps down if you do need to go to a charger and just do that. It's great to have a fast charging even if the worst by use case with a lot of people get it. I know that you do you understand. I understand it as well use case. So if you want this to have any the y you are pretty much charging during some road tripping. You're going to get to eighty ninety percent all the time. It's no use having an iv that charges quickly to begin with but then goes down to a trickle. You want to charge the color charges quickly throughout the entire session if this does then all power to it. Pardon the pun a charging. Eleven eleven kilowatt. Ac charging three-phase that's pretty good north of sixty and eight point nine and again. I don't need to call the. Does that drive quickly anymore. Not ever really did. But in the world of ev is eight point nine. Is you gotta say for mercedes benz. A little bit slow. Even though this is the base model you know you're looking. At the nissan aria the new a new nissan. It's gonna come with the wheel drive the force technology. That's going to be five point. Something seconds nor to sixty. And that's the in this area the ladies benz during nine seconds. It may be a little bit tardy. It does toe up seven hundred and fifty kilograms important for some markets and it goes on sale from forty seven and a half thousand euros next month in february having a uk price having a us price. It may not come to the us. I'll get onto that now. Mercedes benz has recalled revealed the second model so the fcc was the first one very very expensive. The qc and Very luxurious. I mean a a gorgeous absolutely gorgeous cop edging out the soon to be revealed e. q. S we thought maybe the might be revealed but now the iki is the first one to be revealed. A small crossover and definitely a shape and size of car that many people are looking forward to to to adding a model. Why size an. Id four skoda skoda any ac. Iv kia a narrow kinda size car now. The relationship with its gla. Sister or cousin car is very clear. The guests number of unique design changes but it is a car based on a combustion platform made into an ivy has a power train. That's on par with the gla more impressive than its combustion-powered interesting though mercedes hasn't decided whether it will be offered in the us yet says also block so we cars like the bmw. I x three. Which is again based on combustion platform just an electric version stuffing batteries. Where they can that is not coming to the us. Something we'll say because the range is just not good enough for the us market and again to six five miles for this on wwl tv pay. Maybe that's two four five or two fifty when it gets an epa rating. Well you might ask. Is that enough. I personally think so sell in the. Us and people will buy it anyway. The driving websites driving electric driven already. And they say it's expected to be priced from just over forty thousand pounds in the uk. The qa is a premium offering with its sights set on the tesla model. Y rather than trying to be an enticing affordable car like the id four nevertheless it will appeal to a wider audience than the qc which fought too expensive for most people. First of all. It's very swift. It's compact good visibility characteristically eager and smooth delivery of electric power which is great for driving in city traffic. Not bad at all on a twisty country road. Out of its depth of they say a sustained high speed motorway. Cruising top speed is nine thousand nine miles an hour which i'm surprised about because again germany mercedes-benz the auto bahn people drive very high speeds. In places. there are no less than five levels of region to toggle between the strongest which allows for one pedal driving everywhere the lightest feels more like just kind of free wheeling and so they. I like that. I want more of that. I like to have complete control over that because again in slow town driving. I want one pedal driving but again speed. I want to be able to free. Want heavy region. It's more efficient to just kind of cruise a slowdown gently to read the road. Ahead of you to look further ahead to be a better safer driver when you let let you off the accelerator ozone the bright lights. Come on and you ford and you you know you thrust into your seatbelt because the region is is so extreme of course to get around that you're modulating your right foot which i find more of a hassle to drive eve as with with crazy strong region. So what do you think. Have a look at the pictures online. Send me your thoughts. I'll read out some of your opinions and thoughts. I'd love to hear from you on what you what you think of this. I the outside and again like i celebrate holidays. I love electric cars when we knew wants to talk about so i always give them the benefit of the doubt. I'm more positive negative. The outside i think you take off the flashy wheels they on for these press picks on some very average looking error alloy wheels or even some areas sales and you take away the jazzy pressure that they've kind of blood. Today's the impression of speed and it's a pretty bland average looking crossover shape. Isn't that just the shape. The everybody wants these days not me personally. It's not quite a con quite an suv. Like i think if you wanna call by a car if you wanna suv. 'cause your family all an lost after whole dogs guinness uv. This kind of not quite anything shape doesn't do anything familiar but they just sell everywhere around the world now and again. It's why it's the shape of the model. Y idee four scott any ac all of those costs and so i think you take away the glitz and the outside like the way is just a bit boring and bland with no real design on this. I think the interior because i like button not I need serious spectacular the the screens a big but not too big the nice little blue detailing inside is nice overwhelming the the materials look them not so much to attack you. I pace from these subscription company to the came straight from the factory as aspect eighty grand and like eat in the they they they send it to me to say. Hey you have a drive of this and try out of and i was like was done two hundred miles like snacks in the car. You know because it really felt like an eighty grand car and so it was. Everything was premium leather and soft and beautiful and so quiet drive base. And although i've been inside this mercedes-benz it looks like it's heading towards that level of interior luxury clearly. A few of the materials look like they've made some cost savings but this looks like it's a real premium in interior with just enough buttons to make the control of things like heating nice and easy not having to access a touchscreen but still be nice big screens in this and again. it's all. Subjective really appeals to me and so called white to drive one. Let me know your thoughts. Let's talk about the reynaud five which is coming and a follow up on a story i told you about. Bring him back the five nine for small city car and i mentioned by the time they hit the market in a couple of years time. The zoe will be long in the tooth. Is it going to be replacement justify up. There is some clarification on this. It will not replace zoey. They will sell both from red eye At the same time. The reasoning behind is simple. Zoe is europe's best selling electric car. And they want to keep that name plate going and so the run five inspire debate out in two thousand twenty three. We saw a prototype. Concept is coming along with the four as well. We wonder if i will maybe not sell the twingo. And they'll sell the full the five and the zoe we'll wait and see porsche next in the news today. Revealing new entry level cheapo bargain bucket version of the teich on this model joins the range with two battery options and for the first time in ticon two wheel drive and tycoon. Sales were second only to the mccann imported lineup in two thousand and twenty. It's been so wildly popular porsche. And that's why they are expanding the range and making the most of a good thing says the performance car website. Ego the new variant simply. Called tycoon is opening up. Its pricing thirteen grand less than the current two. Cheapest one seventy grand. What a bogging. So feel seventy thousand pounds. You got a eighty kilowatt hour battery or an optional. Ninety three point four kilowatt hour battery single motzer on the rear axle. The same motif found in the full s. Three hundred and twelve all three hundred seventy four break host pound depending on the battery size you to get some over boost for that so you do get in a shorter period of boost of almost four six nine break host power so it'll be a performance car. Despite the variation of peak power figures the performance of both battery options are identical in terms of the stats. Say five point. Four seconds not to one hundred kilometers an hour and going as fast as one hundred and forty two miles an hour. The entry level tycoon. We'll be the slowest. But it's also the one that goes the furthest it's going to have over three hundred miles on the wwl. Tcp test cycle and so again for those porsche drive on a drive along way without stopping up. He three over three hundred. Miles is great still a very expensive car tongue in cheek saying it's a cheaper version is cheaper obviously but not cheap. Let's talk about. Vw going head to head with tesla in china with a new electric suv. The full well. There's two versions of the four in china. Let me tell you how it works. Volkswagen has set the starting price of that locally built. Suv the id four now. They've got to partnerships in china because until tests there were allowed to build their facility. That wanted to go build an ev. In china to a joint venture and it was a way of bringing in knowledge to the chinese economy and the chinese market. There was no one hundred percent foreign owned. Ev makers until tesla were allowed into the country to build gigafactory shanghai. And now you can other companies can and have owned more than fifty percent but pre. Then that's why. Volkswagen have different partnerships in china. So this particular car is made in a joint venture with f. w. group again. A domestic chinese mike is fa w vw selling the id four for thirty thousand eight hundred dollars. Equivalent hundred ninety nine thousand yuan which is incredible a great price for the id four and a real play for the mass market and so much cheaper than even the cheapest of tests on sale vw does have a very good reputation in china and doesn't a lot of cars in china according to bloomberg the full Which is called. The id for cross is built on the same platform as the that sold in europe and the The us the platform and as audis and scott is being made on that platform. The the car is cheaper than tesla's way cheaper than tesla's recently launched model y which three three nine nine hundred You on so significantly cheaper and also eligible for subsidies the vehicle can run fell four hundred kilometers. That's two hundred and forty nine miles for the chinese might. Id full and vw will also a long range version which does five hundred and fifty kilometers for just two hundred and twenty thousand yuan now for comparison. The cheapest tesla sells the model three standard range. Plus that's the equivalent of thirty eight and a half thousand. Us dollars it'll go two hundred ninety miles the most expensive. If you spec the id four to its top levels and the biggest battery most expensive id. Four is even cheaper than the cheapest model three thirty seven and a half thousand dollars equivalent. Now the there's two. Id force me told you about this at the beginning. Let me tell you the. Id four x four. X has a few different styling trims and it is made by the s ic- vw joint venture. That's the four x then. There's the id full cross which is exactly the same as the european and us id four and that's made by hefei w. vw but both of those have a production capacity of three hundred thousand cars every single year. So six hundred thousand. Id fours a year just for the chinese market. When i talk about china. And i'll tell you all the time. The numbers are insane when when companies like vw have been putting all of this groundwork into building all these factories that they don't get the attention of some of the comics and ones that do get more at time impress. The numbers are just going to be overwhelming so big when they when they go. Ev that really gonna go for it and a massive capacity in these factories. The one we're talking about today. Say the fa wwe model for just over thirty thousand dollars equivalent. Getting the id four. Which i think is a great price for two hundred fifty mile car. And it's getting very very good. Eddie reviews we'll wait and see how the chinese take to it. of course. Tesla has a premium brands supercharging network. It's that that That brand the so many people aspire to at. How much does that make a difference as well looking forward to seeing how this plays out. I'm loving it at the biden. Tesla have lowered the price of the model three in some european countries. Germany and france as of today the price is reduced standard range pro plus went from forty three down to forty thousand euros. Long range went from fifty two and a half to fifty thousand euros in the pupo performance from fifty eight and a half forty five thousand euros now. In france there's a seven thousand zero subsidy You can get a vehicle for instance full a very very good price. Thirty four thousand euros say in france with the standard range plus model three now. There are some places as well in france that will give you a extra subsidy for trading in a diesel combustion. Couple before two thousand and six. I think you've always eat. You've got owned it for a while. She's gone by one few hundred yards and then try to. If you fit the criteria you will indeed get that money off and there are some other local regional regional benefits. You can get a tesla model. Three for under thirty thousand euros in some parts of france. If you tickle those boxes and finally again this like yesterday's mcdonnell story this one put a smile on my face. Just just because like i if once done with a car and they sell it on and somebody can have a second third. Fourth use is just better for the planet rather than building new stuff. I personally wouldn't buy chatham oka- i mean no disrespect to someone picking up nissan leaf tonight. The leaf is a great car. And there's plenty of those plugs around most of us charge anyway But i don't know that's just my opinion. Feel free to disagree like those china plucks on going anywhere for ten years. It's like it's like you can't judge a mental block. Maybe it's just me. But it comes with that plucks own because it's a similar size to the chinese plug and actually to make the hole in the side of the car is my nonscientific way of describing big fish. Ccs would mean redesigning the car literally and this crash test and things to go through and homologation so the puts you out of my own. I understand why but the g. three looks like an interesting wwl's ep range of two hundred and ninety miles a ex pilots. So it's pretty clever driver. Assistance is pretty cheap. "My name is martin. Lee i've been through every story today so you don't have to so mentioned off. The my christmas enforced break the a couple of changes to the podcast for twenty twenty one and the i want something that i never felt completely comfortable giving up and that is a return to question of the week your bits of the show the chance to have a conversation with you and for you to input your directorates to the many thousands of people that listen to the show all around the world every day on sunday. We always answered the question of the week on a sunday over this year You know we're a new family. That she saw there was time precious. Learning how to be a family also cove. It was a stranger. And i thought that going down from seven to five shows. A week would help that it did. It really helped. But i was never comfortable. There was always a a nagging voice in the back of my head. That didn't think that was the right decision. And it kind of it kind of makes sense. But it didn't so i if if that's a sign of being held my hand up and say hey i think i was wrong after three or four months so long it's been so question of the week comes back. Sunday show comes back more saturday specials and a return to some other things as well. We'll get to later on in the week. But let's get into the news for fear of boring me to tears with things that aren't actually mercedes-benz e q. S. has been spied with very arid wheels you've seen those kind of era wheels that come on so many vs now. Two-tone ero wheels. Actually that look really cool. Looks like it's running on twenty one or twenty two inches. It looks like a concept car. The concept car version of the mercedes benz e was was typical concept car like the designers had been given free reign. And you always think oh my goodness when it makes its way to the road. How much of that is going to be dialled down and an entombed out. But you know. I think this is going to be a million miles away from that. Stunning swoopy lo long sedan. Version of the s class in electronic form the luxury pure electrics sedan looks almost ready given the very low level of camouflage on this latest set of pictures and then we don't expect the final production version of the us anytime soon probably in the first half of two thousand and twenty one and an s class equivalent the first electric model mercedes-benz to arrive in the us as well. And it's going to be marketed. As a direct competitor in line with tesla model s the future bmw electric seven series. This is going to be a competitor to that as well and it's bill on an electric platform the electric vehicle architecture the platform. So it's probably going to be in. Usd la's second half of the years as motor one dot com. Now.
Britt Lyle II on design
"Your host Maris cherry and this week. I'm talking with Britt Lyle the second a Motion Graphics designer here in Atlanta, Georgia. Let's start the show. All right. So tell us who you are and what you do. My name is Britt Lyle. I am a motion graphic designer. I'm a graphics assistant at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Now, I've been asking everyone, you know kind of starting off for these interviews how they're sort of holding up right now, you know, we're recording this right now in late September. It's pretty easy. I think well known that we're going to be in the states for a while. Now, how have you been holding up during this pandemic? Oh, wow, there have been like there been good days and bad days. I've been holding up generally well, but like there have been, you know good days and bad days. Like I said I tend to deal with anxiety sometimes so that has been kind of a struggle wage. Kind of cope with along with like just regular anxiety Then the election and covid-19. Like one of the things I learned in grad school is like you have to take time to for yourself, especially in stressful situations. And this entire year has just been one big stressful situation off. So it's very very important to like make yourself as comfortable as possible. Especially someone who like regularly deals with anxiety and off. Yeah, so I just basically just tried to make sure that if I feel like in some type of anxiety attack coming that I make sure to remove myself from the situation and ground myself before coming back to reality so to speak gotcha. Now let's talk about your work at sports and entertainment and can you kind of briefly describe what a MB sports and entertainment is and just sort of what is a regular day like for you right now since you're working from home, so am be Sports entertainment. We are sort of like a company within a company job. We do work for the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United. My job specifically is Graphics assistant. So basically that means I help out anyone else you need help with any other big project whether it's coming up with Gameday Graphics video editing color correction or any other regular or irregular occurrence. I might occur to you today. How did you get started there on a whim a lot of a lot of the jobs that I've gotten in particularly designed jobs of Applied on a whim. So I was laid off at my previous job, which I was very very sad about and I was just applying applying everywhere that I can and I saw the post for graphics assistant at a MB. And again, it was one of those things for me. It's like I can't in good conscience past this up and say Thursday. I tried everything that I could so I apply thinking that like I wouldn't hear anything and they turned out to be one of the few people that actually gave me like like three rounds of interviews and hired me within like a month. Nice. Yeah, so you mentioned, you know kind of working on these, you know, not random projects, but you kind of work on an ad-hoc basis as an assistance. So are there any sort wage projects that you like take the lead on or you always kind of working in that second kind of capacity mostly in a secondary capacity because there are people who have been there since the building open since as soon as construction ended they hired a design team and those and some of those people have left but there are still some people have been there since its Inception and they kind of know they build out the process. They're the ones who really like all the assignments all of the the dimensions birth. All the renders all of these little details. They're the ones who built it from the ground up and I'm essentially follow the process. I'll give my two cents every now and then if I feel like it'll help but for the most part they have pretty much have like a game plan laid out for how certain things are done and how certain things are processed. And so, you know, just so folks name Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta is fairly new. I think it was opened and what 2018-2017 2017-2017? Okay, and then prior to that it not in the same space, but pretty close to it was the Georgia Dome that's where I used to work actually years and years and years and years ago. I worked for the Georgia Dome the the Georgia World Congress Center and since Olympic Park, so I'm familiar with that whole kind of campus area and I know back then I mean Georgia Dome all that is owned by the state, but Mercedes-Benz is privately owned. Do you know if off? Any of the the Congress Center staff works there also since it's so close not intimately like I think some people transferred but I mean as far as I know most people have been there since MBS was a thing. I'm not sure if any other people from Georgia Congress moved on to other projects, but I do know that they got a lot of different people from a lot of different places to kind of help build this team up. Yeah. I was just always curious about that cuz I still know a good number of people over there so long what's the best thing you would say about the work that you do? All of the work that I do is like kind of unconventional and well, I guess not unconventional like sort of a dimension sizes that I do that I work with like no one else in the world really works with these type of Dimensions cuz inside the stadium there's this song Halo board, and it's like six feet high, I think it's got like Fifty four thousand LED lights on it and the the file sizes and the dimensions that we work with are just pretty unorthodox and pretty wild to kind of like work with and when I first got started, you know someone I got trained in art school or just doesn't in designing was as the standard 1920 x 1080 and then suddenly I have to deal with sizes that are like fifty thousand nine fifty thousand five thousand or ten thousand sizes and it's kind of weird but it's also kind of cool cuz like you you kind of makes my portfolio stand out a little bit off and yeah, I guess that would be the best thing is that like I do I do the type of design that are very different than anyone else does and it may be kind of hard to put on social. Which is why I tend to put it on my website, but at the same time like not a lot of people can say they have designed the stuff that I designed and

"To you by Mercedes Benz vans driver Mercedes Benz van Find out how far an extra mile really goes. From customization and service to financial assistance. Mercedes Benz vans are ready for anything. Ryan Smith, Jason Fitz, and I find this interesting right because we've had a lot of conversation about college football today, and Scott Tweeted me earlier and said. Since when did college football becomes just about money? Why is that the only reason that everybody's going with it finds other sports at large amounts. But college soccer's going college calls going college volleyball. They are money makers. But you don't stop and talk about it. You guys have talked miss two days of the conversation. The love of the game championships. Expect, etcetera. This is about the love of the game. I want it to be about the look of love again. Me, too, And I got a stress is I mean, a large portion of my ESPN career is tied to college football. I work a lot in that space. It's good for my bottom line for college football. Come back bad for it Not to. I believe me. I love the sport. That's why it's my favorite sport to cover. But at some point it became about business because to be clear this is a business. It's about dollars and cents. We reported on ESPN months ago that many of the financial institutions across the country cannot afford the losses that will come with no college football. The reports yesterday that the Pac 12 is looking at a loan program that could be up to $83 million per school. That will be paid back over a 10 year period just to cut the losses from college football for one season if they don't have it, so it became about business when dollars and cents started to make it questionable on whether or not football could continue. If there isn't a college football season this fall, right and I I hear Scott to it's like we all want it to be about that we wanted to be and that look at the players. They want it to be about playing, just playing enjoying the game. Doing the best they that's what they want it to be about. But the problem is, it becomes about money. We're in the midst of it when we are in the midst of a pandemic where people are dying or schools they're saying we're not gonna have our student body come to the school because we want to keep our students safe. But we're going to let our football playing students. Be in harm's way where it became something where these guys are gonna be out there playing, and they're not even clear on what safety precautions were out there to keep them safe. That's when You look at this and you say it has no choice but to be about money and let's make no mistake here. The money ends up being significant, Some people argue. While some of these schools have big endowments, why don't they use that to offset the losses and that's a great point. But the other side of this says that the money is not there for some of these schools in college football. They're going to cut a lot of other programs, so they'll make that argument to you and say this is why we need to play football. But let's keep in mind. It's hard to not be about money when you are willing to put and I will say this again and again. Teenagers in harm's way young people in harm's way who don't get paid a dime. Who don't have any future earnings that come from this. We're going to put them in hard way in the midst of a pandemic. We have not seen in almost a century in order to play these games, and I'm not saying we don't need to have college football. I'm just saying that that makes it hard to look at it in any way. Other than what about money? Well, MP came in and asked, Why do you guys keep playing stuff of the feat of the when it comes to college Power? Five college football? I don't believe they have any real power. The problem is imagine if in the NFL every division made their own rules at some point, the reason there's a commissioner's because you need somebody to come in and governs and what we're seeing right now is every conference making their own decisions raises real questions about who is governing the delay. But my real issue to Pete's point is that Schools hide behind the double when it comes to certain rules. Oh, well, you know, we have these eligibility requirements that are laid forth by the way. I'm sorry you can't take. You can't sign these autographs over here as laid forth by the way they like to hide behind the table. Until now, the incidentally wants to hide behind its member institutions. You can't have both sides protecting each other without some knowledge of who's the actual caretaking for all Imagine how frustrating that must be for the players. Because they're sitting there in the middle being asked to do things that no one else is being asked to do. You don't see these university presidents or these head coach is having to go out in the field and sweat all over guys and do all this and put themselves in harm's way. They're the ones who get put in the middle in this game of its your fault. No, it's your fault. And then at the same time, people are saying, Hey, why don't you sign this waiver to excuse us from liability? It's it's just the business. The My favorite part about all of this is the way the world reacts and this is just the truth to the way the world reacts right now, People are saying play for the fun of the game. Let's be real. God forbid, God forbid somebody can't contract over 19 playing a game and then they they pass away whether it's a coach, whether it's an equipment manager. Whether it's a player, those same people will be coming in and saying, Why did you morons want to play the game in the first place? It's just where the world is. Alright. He's Ryan Smith. I'm Jason fits coming up Next. A top five for Tiger Chicken or steak will explain it all will do all of that. Next. I know it may not make a lot of sense yet. I promise.
