Sometimes I click on these for one very simple reason. I want to see how the daily mail expertly spins out an entire article based on somebody walking outside, right. And sure enough, there are pictures that accompany this story. And they are pictures of her friend and Camila Cabello, and she's wearing like biker shorts and a sports bra with like a sweatshirt. Around her waist and on the leg of her pants so very large and visible. Is the word a L O, which is the name of the yoga brand, and they're meant to look like paparazzi photos. They're meant to look natural. They are anything but it is meant to their failing miserably because that looks like an ad photo for all over yoga literally like it's out of the catalog. Right. So I'm like, Oh, okay, That's great. So Uh, fine now tuned into the ad. What more is there for me and then so first sentence. Even if i was just fantasizing i mean i think this just speaks to the real challenge of telling diana's story which is a story all about like the media and the paparazzi and the entertainment industry like really destroying her. And you can make that movie but you can never separate the fact that you are the media and the entertainment industry making that story. You know. I know yeah. There's definitely layers going on there. I also want to. Because i was confused. I just wanna make sure everyone's on the same page right now just so everyone knows. This is a psychological drama. This is not bio-pic. They see raise a psychological drama. And so i don't know this is things are gonna get heavy. It's made by the same director. Who made jackie is that right. Yeah and that movie if you haven't seen it it's not like a biographical retelling of jackie o's life it's very much like a story about inner demons and struggles yet and i'm pretty sure this one takes over the span of like three days during christmas time or something like that when she's like deciding she wants to end her marriage so it's a very specific and short time in her life so it's going to be very concentrated and i am beyond excited because it's it really. I was nervous when they said kristen stewart was gonna be playing her you immediately. Just think of twilight but listen. She's done her homework. She's done a research. Neil young One of my favorite examples of this is If you're familiar at all with a broadway singer adina menzel She's probably best known for Being the voice of elsa and frozen But she has such a powerful voice and how Mars can kind of give that loudness to the voice and we we saw one of the description. There's uppermost shar talking about sweet singing. And but with venus mars it's like loud powerful forcible singing that really kind of carries with strength so Yes she she was someone who came to mind On the athletic side Billie jean king who the tennis player who Was the woman who i'm forgetting. The name of the man she beat and a match in the seventies. But it was like this really breakthrough feminist moment. And she has venus mars And she was known to. I like grunt on the tennis court. Almost of the battlefield With with each each time she would hit the ball and there was a fell made a few years ago with emma stone playing her called battle of the sexes and even in the title of that they show like venus mars symbols of the battle of the sexes and this kind of war between men and women playing out on the tennis court and how she was such a breakthrough feminist symbol in that time and that she has been this mars alignment which i'm sure no one making the film new So yeah she's another example. I thought of with that dynamic clever for we hadn't mentioned that but for the symbols of venus and mars in that those became like in the twentieth century the generic symbols for men and women like venus for women and mars for men Which somebody pointed out. That association was relatively recent On twitter recently although it is interesting. That i'm not sure how recent it is necessarily because Venus traditionally would have been assisted with with women or femininity versus mars being associated sometimes with men or with whatever was conceptualized as masculinity may. It's interesting to hear that just as kind of Not as a planetary lift but just as a symbol for like a bathroom sign or something that they would be used and now we're in a moment where that's breaking down again can put on all bathroom doors and we can put marzano bathroom doors one. It's interesting that that's one of the ways that astrology permeates our culture still in in different ways and it has influenced sometimes in ways that you don't initially realize or are imperceptible until you start Studying astrology and realizing where some of these things come from. Yeah absolutely left the walls. Yeah exactly and really quickly. Before i forget there's also Associations with the days of the week and venus's associated with friday and i forgot i meant i meant to mention that because you mentioned one of the gods associated with venus. And that's where we get the name friday from right yes freya friday And there's actually. There are two norsk goddesses who both seem to carry elements of venus. Freya is the one that i've most associated because she is the goddess of love and war and she rides to a chariot pulled by two cats Nana by the way her her steed amount is a lion which i thought was great But the other one in the north is fraga and the fry of friday. I'm actually not even sure if it's from freya from asia But frigate as the queen of the gods and so would be very different character but would be somewhat comparable to hera or juno in the greco. "I made a crazy risk a gamble and it's about to pay off. How did the camera work in uncut gems. Add to its claustrophobic atmosphere. Let's talk about the significance of the ending in how it was successfully built up. So uncut gems came out recently in twenty nineteen and it was directed by josh. And benny softy. It stars adam sandler in the lead role as howie rattener. Julia fox as julia. Deflationary kevin garnett as himself adina menzel as dino rattener la- keith stanfield as democrat manet. I believe is how you say that name and keith williams richards as phil phil having much more of a support role but is very significant and the ending of this film so i decided to give him his proper Acknowledgement here in. I won't necessarily dive too deep into the plot With this movie because I i think that the plot while it's important to what i want to discuss today. It isn't what discussing isn't necessarily the narrative itself but more how the narrative was constructed with structure and tone. And what have you with that But i do think it's important to have that context so i'll go into a little bit right now. The first few minutes of the movie portrays An and it shows the miners in ethiopia digging for gems they open. There's this guy with a broken leg and it's clearly very dangerous But we see these miners. And they're digging for gems. Eventually they find an opel or uncut opal which basically kicks off the plot because a lot of surrounds this opel. Or i guess the title of the film is uncut gem which i'm sure i could break down the title and have find a bunch of symbolism it was just within the title but that's what i'm doing today. So let's let's continue. What the story here We meet howie who is a jeweler who is a. He's very big on the gambling scene. We see him. Try to put bets down on basketball a lot that that's a huge piece of his character in the movie and we'll go into that element more in just a second but we learned that he owes a lot of people a lot of money and He ends up buying the this opel from the ethiopian. Minors for ya buys it for one hundred thousand and he hopes you know he's actually told. Originally the room bought it was because he was told he could sell it at an auction for you know ten times that amount at at a million so he was going to rip off. The miners essentially That was that was his plan but Well let's see what happens with that In the meantime though his wife does plan to divorce him. There's a whole family drama going with this as well In on the flip side of that. Howie is Having an affair so to speak. I mean he's definitely seeing another woman but at the same time He is you know him and his wife are already both very aware of the fact that they are about to be divorced..

Second game of the season playing in alabama but now they got a here to grow they got a year to to mature and learn the system and learn everything. And i just i think about last year i mean alabama was almost a near perfect team. So you can't read too much into that loss. I agree with you. And i frankly i don't know enough about king or the other guy but i was never that blown away by kellen mind. I mean he had some really good games. But i wasn't either. I never felt like big game. Exactly that was. We've never had a quarterback that can win the game menzel lucked out with one or two But you know he was johnny manziel. Yeah he just any. That's the tough subject. I got more on the radio i got. I don't wanna get you find or anything. Because i get a little touchy went and i sat there and watched in person That game in tuscaloosa as well as the game the next year. The two of the best games i've ever seen again you know in one robbery but the The game in tuscaloosa as as well as he played alabama still had a really good chance at the end of the game to win and probably should have. It was the other way around. He needed to see the poetry first and then the music would come that fascinates me. Well, I would you know, out, John knows more what he's talking about. No, I just play I just and I saying and that you know that's about this riff on something and their ideas and I'm right. Copious notes all the time. Not when I'm somewhere to be just generally, I Keep notes on life and thoughts. So there's always There's always some business with some sentence that will trigger something. I suppose I need more practice because I still have to rely on tabs on a tab chart when I'm playing, and I just plunk around for my own benefit, But it makes me sit and think when I'm when I'm trying to finger what I think is a pretty Difficult fingering of whatever song I'm working on. "Adam sandlers back. Apparently he's playing a dramatic role. So I will. We'll read the synopsis that Cynthia so kindly added to the podcast for me. So from claimed filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie we south die comes an electrifying crime thriller. About Howard Ratner. Adam Sandler a charismatic New York City Jeweler always on the lookout for the next big score when he makes a series of high stakes bets that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime. Howard must perform a precarious high wire wire act balancing business family and encroaching adversaries on all sides in his relentless pursuit of the ultimate win? Sell the movie's called Uncut cut gem jeweler. Yeah and this movie is also set to release in a couple of days December thirteenth. Okay yeah and it's labeled as a surprise Christ Thriller Film Now when I first saw the trailer to this movie I actually saw at the movie theaters. Watch joker okay. So they played this film and Uncut Gems and to be honest. My initial reaction when I I saw the trailer. I wasn't impressed I was. I was confused. I was like what exactly exactly. You're okay so let's break this down. I think this film is going to be in my opinion. I think this film will be trash. ooh I think this is going to fall into the trash from genre really daily honest okay. So here's why one actor who is on the tail end of a successful career. who used to be in comedy? Who is trying a more serious role to one of the main stars is better known for her music than she is for her acting. Right which is Adina Menzel right. And and what did we learn in deep-sea. Ll Cool J.. Right T I in that movie that we talked about last week where it ended up being really awful right. So we've got two two out of like the three elements that we need. The only thing that we're missing is a director that nobody's ever heard of who is really passionate about this project also. We have a trailer that makes literally no sense. But okay so I would not have gleaned anything in that description from that tree right okay. I'm glad that you agree with me because uh when I first saw was like am I and I saw it twice right so I wanted to. I had to watch it twice. I was like am I like Nagaland by like what am I not grasp rasping because I can't understand apply just like drawers and like there's money and guns and vaults that he was a jeweler until I read the synopsis. Just now well I kind of put two and two together because I mean he was walking in a jewelry store. And then the name like uncut gems like I don't know that's just my thoughts but I don't understand like what exactly doc is his role like who is who is he hiding from running from what's going on. He's hiding in running from everybody. which is yet another reason why? I think this movie's going to end up being really bad because like in the trailer he says I'm GonNa make a bet on this over under and they're like there's no way that you win burr and he's like yeah but like like that's just part of the game and he's got this smug thing gone and like this is family friendly podcasts. I'm not gonNA reference all of the jokes in the language that there's some base level bad like race oriented jokes towards Adam Sandler in this film that they're like putting into the trailer as as if to like try to force you to think that it's trying to be this like edgy. Dark comedy but also is like a thriller and then like Adam Sandler's performance wants is just like so over the top smug than it looks gross. It feels like his acting feels like it belongs in a fake documentary right like a spoof documentary where he's playing like Borat like the character is just so outlandish and then you've got all these other dudes who are like these serious gangsters gangsters and Dina Mozelle. She's the one the woman who's playing his wife correct. I don't remember what she looks like. Actually playing somebody like definitely in the film Tom. She's playing she was she's she's playing Adam. SANDLERS girl I don't know why so out of place like the whole time time. She looked so out of place. You're just like even in her acting. It looked like she felt uncomfortable with what was happening in front of her. And he's like he's like you know I've made my decision vision. I'm leaving but I love you baby or something I don't know there's there's dialogue was weird like I don't I was just like left with a big question mark the whole time. I was watching the trailer and I'm a fan of Adam Sandler I love. I love all his comedy film. Fifty first date Zohar is just so so ridiculous. Oh it's so bad but so good so yeah I just. I don't know I was confused. I was a little disappointed because initially I was kind of excitement. Adam Sandler sound like what is he doing now and I just I completely missed the whole point of the trail or the ply and I don't get it yet. Judging by the trailer this movie is not going to be good but in the show notes you wrote something about what the critics say show that. Yeah so this was surprising saw was looking through different sides of talk credits who are who raided the movie and it surprisingly they rated this movie very high. Ninety five percent. Tomato made to- meter score on tomatoes. which that's like incredibly high for rotten tomatoes and one of the reviews from the top critic said uncut gems was my most stressful cinematic experience of twenty nineteen it was also one of the best and then another critic said Adam Sandler deserves an Oscar for his riveting performance uncut gems? He's absolutely brilliant here. So I don't know because he's all the most of the reviews. I was reading pretty pretty good highly praising the movie so so like the trailer just isn't doing justice. Not The point of the trailer. Are they try Giardi. And so it's like how you said it's so trash like you have to go see it because you're entry on what it's about well. What happens quite often with things like this right? So you've got this movie. That's about this like drama and this guy like a wolf on Wall Street is a great example right and this feels kind of like. It's trying to do it. Wolf on Wall Street did with business but with like betting or gambling dude who lives his high flying life but also trying to be this family guy and ultimately he's not gonna be able to do both so he has to make a decision and then there's all these as other influencing factors that people who are trying to get him and wolf on Wall Street it was like the International Trade Commission or the Federal Trade Commission. Yeah there was the FTC. So they're all trying to get him the whole time trying to catch him for drug possession embezzlement and fraud and all this other stuff and so but in this movie. It's it's Adam Sandler who's trying to play this system in the gambling world. And he's got all these people who are like illegitimate after him so it's like not cops or anything like that. That are going after Adam Sandler. It's like gangsters is what it seems like an bookies which does seem like these fight scenes. Were Adam Sandler. Just like he looks looks like woefully unequipped to be had. A fight with any of these people Just doesn't make any
