The Show Must Go On: Wrestlemania Is Still Happening

"We have a a message in the WWE. That is we say what our jobs are. Every day is to put smiles on people's faces all over the globe and we truly believe that and then this time maybe more than any other in in my memory people need those smiles right now more than anything that's WWE executive vice president. Paul Leveque better known as triple h talking about the decision to move forward with this weekend's wrestlemainia thirty six. It's the closest thing to live sports. That's happened in a wild but with no fans permitted the arena and concerns over the safety of the wrestlers and staff. What will the showcase of the immortals look like in the age of Corona virus? I mean at times. It's Friday April third this. Espn daily Greg. You're ready to talk wrassling. Damn Right Excel it talking about sports with funny named people trying to punch each other in the face. Greg Luzinski is a senior writer for. Espn you can check out. Lapsed Fan's guide to wrestlemainia on. Espn DOT COM. Yeah actually I wanted to ask you think. Most people know your name from hockey. How long have you been on the Wrestlemainia beat my wrestling a Bona Fides? Go back to when I was a we child watching Hulk Hogan and the more cartoonish W. F. which really sort of capture my heart as you know through the decades there have been times where it's been okay to say a wrestling fan and then sometimes when they've you don't mention it to a lot of people. I think we're in an okay dimension it part of wrestling right now. We're sort of a necessary to mentioned it portion because there's nothing else going on and wrestling is somehow improbably still happening. How is this even occurring? Well the way it's been occurring for the W. E. and their competition. A W which Ariza. Tnt network is that they've been holding shows in empty facilities but for me that means holding their weekly television programs raw and smackdown at the W. E. Performance Center a training facility in Orlando and what they've been doing literally holding it inside of an Empty Gymnasium. I'm the game triple agent. I would like to personally. Welcome you to the. Wwe Performance Center now. This show will be different from anything you've ever seen before. Sit Back Relax. And if you can't forget about the world around you and let. Wwe Do what we do. Let us put a smile on your face to start. That was a little bit awkward because the wrestlers would come out and they would look to the crowd. That wasn't there and they would do all of the usual pantomime they would do to get the fans excited except there was no fans getting excited. You see it doesn't matter if there's ten thousand fans at their zero fans because this is how I I remember that can only way I could describe it as it's like when you're at chucky cheese and the animatronic band starts playing into an empty room. It's still playing. It's still doing. Its own thing. But there's nobody that Iraq to it and that was like the first couple of weeks of this and also they've been utilizing more space around the performance center lake attacks in the parking lot and stuff like that to try to make it feel more than just trying to recreate something inside of an empty room derailed. Me With that chucky cheese analogy this. It's the it's the rock afire explosion ban. Greg get it right. There's nothing better than being in an empty room with the rock afire. Explosion Band and just hearing the gears clunk together. It's jarring but also satisfying so wrestlemainia. Thirty six is happening on Saturday. What was the original plan for the event the original plan was to hold wrestlemainia? Thirty six at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa and this was going to be a huge event for those who don't know it's not just simply wrestlemainia. Inside of a stadium. It is an entire city being overrun by. Wwe events you have the Access Fan Festival you have the WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony. Where wrestlers of old honored and put into a virtual hall of fame. Physical building doesn't exist quite yet and then also after Wrestlemainia the next day on Monday. It's tradition to hold Monday night raw in that same city so this isn't just simply one event on a on a on a Saturday night for The city of Tampa. It was a whole citywide sort of celebration for wrestling as of March. Third The W. E. and Tampa's mayor said there were no plans to postpone the event the W. E. said look the health safety of our fans and performance of our top priorities. But we remain committed to hosting Wrestlemainia at Raymond. James Stadium fast forward to March twelfth. Now you have Hillsborough County's commissioner less Miller saying he'll probably have to cancel wrestlemainia if the. Wwe doesn't make the decision itself because of the virus pandemic governor Rod Santa's that points that cities and counties should cancel mass gatherings over the next thirty days and so it was becoming a worse than worse. Look for W. E. to keep wrestlemainia scheduled framing Jamie Stadium on March sixteenth. They made the decision not to have upwards of sixty five seventy thousand people come to a stadium during a virus outbreak and instead moved into their performance center in Orlando. It's a two night event April fourth and April Fifth. How has wwe justified or explained their decision to go on with us? Well there's the public explanation and then there's the assumed explanation that the public explanation according to the WWe is that it is for the fans the fans are the lifeblood of the organization it is a panacea the fans to be able to hold this event. It is going to give them some comfort in a time of confusion and trouble. It's also going to be arrested for the performers themselves who you know are looking for some direction or looking for some focus in life during uncertain times. And that's sort of the the public explanation for this. If you know about the wrestling business you know that part of this is the fact that story lines that are going to have their big payoff. At wrestlemainia are a month long process. All the story lines all the action. They all run through. Vince McMahon they are on one track. And they're going to stay on that track through hell or high water. These are storylines narratives that the W has been planning to wrap up in culminate at Wrestlemainia happens every year and then they kind of moved to new stuff after that so from a function process to have wrestlemainia occur and wrap up which are the signature feuds and storylines of their season. If you will was a pretty important thing was there any blowback to all of this. Yeah I think there has been some in the rest in wrestling circles amongst wrestling reporters and and amongst the fans wondering okay. We are looking around the sports world. We're looking around the entertainment world. We're seeing literally every pro league every concert tour Disney on ice everything canceling out of concern about corona virus and yet professional wrestling roles on as a weekly television product so there is a bit of confusion. There're two why this continues while every other facet of sports entertainment seems to have stopped. What about amongst the wrestlers did any of them have reservations about participating in this one particular did so wrestler by the name of Roman reigns one of the bigger stars and WWe had a very highly publicized battle with leukemia? He left in October. Two thousand eighteen returned to WWE IN FEBRUARY. Two thousand nine thousand nine hundred and he's compromised so news started to break recently through some of the quote unquote dirt sheets in wrestling. The ones who report the rumor. Innuendo that Roman reigns was not going to be participating in his scheduled match against Goldberg for the Universal Championship at Wrestlemainia. Wwe basically said hey look. This is understandable situation. The health and safety of our performers paramount Sakiz. The biggest name that we know will not be participating but quite frankly until we see what events they air this weekend we won't know who else may have decided to pull out or had to be quarantined or any of that nature because they're being very clandestine about what the card will actually be the first wrestlemainia. That's taking place over multiple nights. It's also the first wrestlemainia that is going to be completely pretaped. So when did they take this weekend's event and what steps did they take to ensure the safety of the wrestlers in the people working on it? It's been a race against time for me. As I mentioned the performance center is in Orlando Florida Orlando Florida. Recently issued a stay at home order March twenty sixth that really closed out all the essential businesses. Just like we've seen all over the country so the WBZ has been racing. It's time to not only record wrestlemainia matches but also record. Future television matches programming as well as far as the safety of the wrestlers. It is a closed control facility. Stephanie McMahon the daughter of owner Vince McMahon who is the brand manager for WWe said to variety. Recently there's extensive testing screening. When you first come into the facility regardless of whether you're a talent crew member or anyone else if you have a temperature taken and you have a temperature over a hundred point four degrees you're automatically asked to leave also any wrestlers de out of the country or in contact anybody who's been out of the country you're not actually allowed to enter the facility. Either so they are taking some safety measures as far as trying to make sure anyone exhibiting symptoms isn't allowed in the facility or anyone who might have been exposed to corona virus through travel or relationships isn't allowed in the facility. Which is you know what you see from other companies as well but obviously there's no way to be sure without Virus testing whether anybody actually has the center of city so they tape this before the stay at home order. Does that mean this is going to be the last big event like this or is this something they're going to keep on doing? There is a lot of sort of mystery as to how these wrestling organizations are going to continue to keep on doing their thing. I'm not sure what the regulations mean for the performance in Orlando. I don't know if this is GonNa be it for their use facility or not. I can't tell you that. Eighty w their competition with also filming inside of an empty facility in Florida's well and there was news this week that they're gonNA be taking their show to some undisclosed to record matches going forward so I don't know if it's GonNa be a shell game where these companies have to start going to the few places around the country that don't have restrictions in place or what have you. But it's clear from both cases that even though they're putting a bunch of their product in the bag right now in our taping matches and episodes for future use on television. The show apparently is going to go on coming up. We this weekend's most anticipated matches. This and explain how rob Gronkowski fits into all of this greg for someone who doesn't follow wwe closely. Can you explain why Wrestlemainia is such a big deal? Wrestlemainia was the calling card for the WWF and then the wwe. Over the course of thirty six years. Welcome everyone gorilla monsoon here ringside with my colleague. Jesse. The body Ventura as the World Wrestling Federation presents the wrestling extravaganza all time wrestlemania. I mean you could make the argument that if the first WRESTLEMAINIA wasn't a huge success. We're that was one where. Hulk HOGAN TEAMED UP WITH MR T in a tag team match. Where would it even be today? Mr Team Wrestlemainia. Three at the Pontiac Silverdome set an attendance record to watch Hulk Hogan Body Slam Andre. The giant over the years wrestlemainia has become its own monster. It doesn't matter what the car looks like wrestling. Fans casual or diehard are going to pay attention to Wrestlemainia because they know inherently that. It's going to be the most adventurous and most momentous product that they put on every year. Greg this is the first wrestlemainia without fans but as you mentioned. Wbz has been broadcasting smackdown and raw. How have those broadcast been doing? They've been not all that successful in the ratings which I think is understandable considering everything that's going on right now considering the awkwardness of the product. But they're reviews. The show has steadily gotten better. One of the more fascinating aspects of what's been happening in pro wrestling is to see one. How the wrestlers themselves adapt to not having the fans in the building to play off of and to you know to see how these organizations thrived through adversity. It's been well known amongst. Wwe Fans that some of their best work ever has been born out of adversity when they were challenged in the one thousand nine hundred ninety s during the great Monday night television wars with WCW Ted Turner Wrestling Organization. That's where we got stone cold. Steve Austin Austin Three. Sixteen says that's where we got the Rock. Piss what the Rock took it? They were all born out of that competition so I think a lot of us are wondering in these desperate times. What will these organizations do to keep their businesses going to keep fans interested and then what blossom from that could it? Could it be greatness? Well speaking of Greatness Former Patriots Tight End Rob. Gronkowski is hosting this weekend's Wrestlemainia. What can we expect from that now? Fairness Gronk does have some wrestling background. He did appear to previous WRESTLEMAINIA fans. Not just walking tasking helping his friend Mojo Rawley win a battle royal. I believe it was so he's got a little bit of. Wwe On his resume he will serve as host fun fact. The only other time I think the that Wrestlemainia has had an official host or hostess is when Kim Kardashian was the hostess one year yeah that is some pretty heady company for Gronk to be joining. No one's really sure what he is going to do. It is kind of a scary prospect to have rob Gronkowski tried to play to an empty room. I think he's somebody who definitely get used a crowd to feed off of every facet of life. But he's GonNa be there and he's a big name and You know since the WRESTLEMAINIA was supposed to be in Tampa one imagines there'll be some semblance of it's the second most surreal thing. That's happened at Tampa sports in this month. Kind of joke about Tom. Brady we can expect that to happen. So Greg I have not kept up with wrestling but I should disclose here that I did watch deputy as a child. I had an older brother in which I feel like as a catchall explanation and I may have been forced to play the role of undertaker given that I have long dark hair as a little girl. I was delighted to see. He's going to be there this weekend. In fact he's not the only a legend coming back for this wrestlemainia right. Yeah wrestlemanias famous for recycling old talent. The undertaker is Someone who had a farewell match three years ago so true wrestling fashion. He's still go and and the undertaker is going to be taking on a wrestler by name of Aj styles and what is being billed as a bone yard match. They're drawing heat on each other by mentioning each other by their real names. Aj's calling him mark undertaker's calling him Allah new. But you're right. There's more a classic wrestlers I've mentioned before fifty three year old Goldberg. You may remember from the Halcyon days of the WCW in the Nineteen Ninety S. He's actually your universal champion and he will be taking on a someone to replace. Roman reigns brock listener for where you have guy taking on drew McIntyre who eliminated him in the royal rumble and people are wondering if this is just another big body being fed brocker. If this is GonNa be the start of a championship run for McIntyre and. Let's not forget me in a John Cena star of stage and screen. He returns to Wrestlemainia to take on one of the more popular characters. They've created in recent memory. A character called the fiend who wrestles in like a crazy scary Halloween mask. And they're going to battle in something called a firefly funhouse match which people are saying could be a pre taped match that will include cinematic qualities. So prepare themselves for that. Greg what do you think would be considered a success for the wwe this weekend? Nobody getting sick. I think would be a real good success for the wwe. Look there is a real debate as to whether or not this event should be happening. And it's a true debate about many things in life that seems to be ongoing. Despite the recommendations and warnings we saw it in sports on. I'm in the bay area. The San Jose Sharks recently had to address the fact that after Santa Clara County recommended. Mass gatherings not happen. The sharks played three home games before the county finally said okay. That's it none of this stuff officially legally we're going to you know some the sheriff to shut down to try to do it again. So there's been this sort of pushing up to the limits of things that have been happening throughout life so that would be the first thing but as far as like in ring success. Look I get a Mulligan. It's a sport that really does thrive in front of a live audience. It's a sport that really does need fan interaction to understand how matches should flow and things like that. There's nothing better than than being in the crowd during a really successful match. I'll tell you a quick story. I was in Miami for Wrestlemainia when the only Wrestlemania ever attended it was a match between the undertaker and triple h one of the undertaker's many could this be his last match. Wrestlemainia MASHES SHAWN. Michaels triple h his best friend. The heartbreak kid is the guest referee places. Electric its cage match And at one point during the match every wrestling fan knows it could be the end because the matches gone on that long Shawn Michaels kick the undertaker in the face. Triple H Pinza would the one and we get the two and we get to two and three quarters and by God. The undertaker kicks out and I have been in Times Square for new years. I have been in Times Square when that ball drops and the calendar turns it was eclipsed by the euphoria in that stadium for the undertaker continuing this scripted. Fake stage play beyond where we all thought it was going to end well wrestling. Fake the news for you about the Easter Bunny Somewhat Greg time coming up how. Nba players are handling a different kind of dribbling. Here's another story. I want you to know the MK is full of fathers. They're typically not full-time parents. During the regular season players and coaches are constantly on the road and are working hours so they don't always get to see their kids. Obviously that is not the case now and while their lives are unquestionably different from other parents because of their financial advantages. Nba players are finding themselves knee deep in dad duty and their experiences which they shared with our Zach. Lowe are quite relatable. Consider this quote from spurs forward Rudy. Gay Who has two sons? It's like every five minutes. I'm trying to think of something for them to do. At one point gay said he was excited when he found a box turtle hoping it would hold his kids attention for a few hours but as he told low it was cool for three minutes then they wanted something else some players are perhaps unsurprisingly playing basketball with their kids here is the sound of young son correctly predicting that his dad would score on their kids sized hoop easily sixers center. Al Horford told low that he's basically become the world's most overqualified p. e. teacher is dining indoor obstacle courses for his five year old son in three year old daughter because their families. Philadelphia apartment does not have a yard. Pelicans GUARD JJ rettig. Who was actually home? Schooled as a kid has been helping his kids right in illustrate short books and Celtics. Gordon and a Torius Gamer himself has been playing a lot of Mario Kart with his kids. He also told low that he's watched frozen. Maybe thirty five times. I imagined some of you. Parents listening just nodded at that one. I mean it comes and this has been ESPN daily our show is produced by Alexander Hyacinth. Mike John's St Marteen Ryan Towel. Astros Scandal: MLB's Nightmare Continues

"So what are your thoughts on? What THE ASTROS DIG Yesterday. The apologies were whatever? Thought Jim Cranes was week. I thought Manfred punishment was week given him immunity. I mean these guys were cheating for three years. Everyone knows they stole the ring from us. That was the reigning National League. Mvp CODY bellinger. Doing what everyone in baseball has done this week? Diaw the Houston Astros in Commissioner Rob Manfred as Manfred faces questions over whether he should have done more to punish the team. Spring Training Games are beginning and all eyes are on Houston. Can the Commissioner contain scandal? That seems like it will never end or with a players. Take things into their own hands. I mean it's Friday February Twenty First. This is espn daily presented by ADT. How is Fort Myers hot? Buster only writes about baseball for ESPN and is in Florida covering spring training. If you've been up in the northeast all winner in near thirty degrees to come down here in the first days of Spring and you already getting seventy five eighty and muggy. It's very different but you know hot not only with the weather but also with the players who well let's get into that Are you covering baseball a long time? Have you ever seen anything like we've witnessed over the last week? Absolutely not look. I mean the early days of spring training are usually about. Who's in good shape who worked? What pitch they worked on during the winter and here it's just flame-throwing. I know personally. I lost respect for those guys. Everyone in the show in the big leagues lost respect for those guys day after day after day of players being critical. But the part. That's so different is the peer to peer stuff. It's damaging to baseball. I feel like every single guy over. There needs a beating even through the steroid era. You didn't see this. Collective anger aimed at one group of players. The way we've seen other players so angry with the Houston Astros. They're angry at the Astros. And they're also angry at commissioner rob Manfred who stepped in it. I think it's fair to say on Sunday at his first press conference of Spring Training when he said the idea of an asterisk or asking for a piece of metal back seems a futile act. Justin Turner on the dodgers was not pleased. You know calling the world series trophy piece of metal. I mean I don't know if there's ever won anything in his life. Maybe he hasn't but the reason every guys in this room the reason every guy is working out all off season and showing up to camp early and putting it all the time. Effort is specifically for that trophy. I think we're used to seeing the likes of this directed towards the NFL. Commissioner Roger Goodell but before now Manfred laid pretty low. How has he generally been perceived by the players in the past well? There's no doubt that generally speaking that the relationship between players and Major League baseball is at its worst. I think in like twenty five years. You know what happened in the last time. The CBA was negotiated. Was the owners absolutely routed? The players in those talks getting a lot of advantages financial advantages taking a lot of the high ground that the players had owned the past and the last couple of years. We've seen that play out. In Free Agency. In veteran players have felt like that when they reach free agency. They're not getting as much money as they should have. So that's sort of been percolating the last couple of years and then when you have robbed make the comments that he he. He's made about the Astros in his handling of that case I think all that anger and it was built upon so he made the comment at the beginning of the week. What is he said since then? Well he acknowledged. He met with reporters on Tuesday night that he was mistaken in what he said. I referred to the World Series Trophy in a disrespectful way. And I want to apologize for that. There's no excuse for it I made a mistake. I was trying to make a point but I should have made it in a more effective way and again I want to apologize for it. Actually think that this was an important first step because he's made a lot of mistakes in this like the fact that in two thousand seventeen when you had the apple watch situation between the RED SOX and Yankees. He missed an opportunity at that time to draw a line in the sand to make it clear to everybody. Look Science. Stealing using electronics is not going to be accepted. He didn't do it in seventeen he didn't do it in eighteen. And let's face it when you listen to the players. Their anger over the fact that members the Astra's weren't disciplined that's viewed as another mistake. So I thought it was important for rob finally to acknowledge that. He's made mistakes. During this process. The players seem to have a problem with the fact that the astros players were given immunity a couple of days ago. Mike Trout said I don't agree with the the punishments you know the players not You know getting anything you know. There was a player driven You know thing cheat like that and not get anything it's it's It's sad to see which is remarkable buster because it's probably the most interesting thing might drive as every said about something other than the weather but it seems to be the way a lot of players feel why didn't Manfred punish them. Rob was in a position where this is not like the AA where you know the the head of the lake and come in and basically threaten players into cooperation. Major League baseball players are represented by the Union and so as they began this negotiation if they had simply gone in and told the players. Look we're coming you get the information. It would have been easy for the players to lawyer up and for a lot of the answers to Major League baseball to be along the lines of. I don't recall or I didn't hear that banging of the trash can and there's not really any way to challenge that and it would have been much more difficult for them to establish information if you remember fourteen years ago. George Mitchell was commissioned by Bud Selig to investigate the steroid era. He had no cooperation with the players because of the position of the Union. And I think that Manfred may have had the same situation if he hadn't given the players immunity. I think one thing to baseball looked at was boy we have litigation arbitration playing over the whole summer. At least this is one way to get to the truth quickly. Established what happened and try to put this in a rear view mirror. That clearly has not been as simple as they as they anticipated. Manfred has suggested that the players could have filed grievances because the Astros General Manager never sent along the rules. And I put the clubs on notice as to what exactly the rules were and how they were going to be treated going forward among the other failures of that organization. That information never made its way to the players. I was awesome. Well they just didn't do it. If we had disciplined the players in all likelihood we were GONNA have grievances and grievances that we were going to lose on the basis that we never properly inform them the rule so given those two. That's exactly right and that's sort of a classic thing because if you remember when Aj hinch the Astros manager did his interview with. Tom Produce one of the questions asked him was. Did Jeff Luneau tell you about this memo and Aj's answered very initially. No HE DIDN'T. The players could have done the same thing. Now you and I know from a point of view of common sense. That's kind of absurd because when the red sox apple watch thing happened in September two thousand seventeen that was out there like it was very public in disgust. That rob Manfred had come down with discipline and in warned. Everybody don't participate in this but again we're into lawyer speak now where well was they actually told specifically that. I wasn't allowed to do a B and C. No I wasn't I don't recall and would have been a morass rob's been commissioner now for five years buster. Is there any chance. He doesn't survive this no he. He's totally fine because of how much money they're making. I mentioned the two thousand sixteen collective bargaining agreement. How they were such an advantageous position when it comes to things like the luxury tax and they're making money hand over fist and for that reason he's fine. When people think about the commissioner I think casual fans will look at them as being the representative of the sport and representing the interests of fans and players and teams know. He's a team employee. He works for the owners and he's been doing a great job at making the owners a lot of money. He's on very solid ground coming up. What should the Astros expect from fans and opposing players at their first spring training? Game whatever you want to protect. Nobody has more ways to help. Keep YOU SAFE THAN ADT. The most trusted name insecurity you can customize an ADT security package to help protect your home in a way that works for you and your budget eighty has hd video doorbells and outdoor cameras. Smart Lights smart locks smart thermostats flood sensors fire in carbon monoxide detectors all connected to twenty four seven monitoring controlled by the sound of your voice or the. Adt APP to help protect your home today with Adt so buster. It seems like some of this negative feedback from fans and players stems from how the astros themselves have handled this over the last couple of weeks. Do you think that they've made it worse? Oh without a doubt. Look if on the first day that this came out you had a press conference in. Aj hinch and Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve All came out and they said you know what we blew it. We made huge mistakes. We're responsible for those and we're here to own them then. I think the sport would have moved passes much more quickly but there is such anger over what was said. I remember getting calls after the you know the first press conference or press availability that Alex Bregman Jose altuve aided in which all Bregman did was referred to. The Commissioner's report hide behind the Commissioner's report. And they were such anger after. Aj hinch is answers and then the capper was what Jim Crane their owner said last week saying that yes they cheated but it had no impact. You know our opinion is You know this didn't impact the game We had a good team We won the world series. And we'll even at that you know I've been comparing it to a neighborhood poker game. It's like the Astros have been saying. Yeah we cheated. On the first hand the secondhand the third hand the fourth hand but when we won that big pot in fifth hand we were playing it straight up and it's absurd and other players have been so angered by it. The other players the Non Astros not only want the astros to be punished. They'd also like the team to be stripped of their title. Aaron judge who of course would have been. Mvp OF JOSE altuve. They didn't get the award in two thousand seventeen. Said this does something holds any value with with cheated. You didn't earn it. You know. That's how I feel is. It wasn't earned earned. Another team had an advantage that you know nothing. You can really guard against that. I just don't feel like that's that's earned her no. Yeah that's why didn't Manfred take away the title? I think you've used that as impractical and ineffective and that's reflected a lot of the conversations that I've had with players that yeah you don't WanNa see members of the two thousand seventeen astros rewarded but the idea of stripping the title or You know taking the championship trophy away. The piece of metal is rob referred to it. It doesn't really take them to where they feel like it would make much of a difference. It feels like it's kind of a meaningless gesture you wrote a column suggesting that Man Fred. Censure the Astros so that sort of have to put an Asterisk by their world series title. Do you think that would satisfy the nation's bloodlust for punishment? No absolutely not. I do think it would be a way for rob Manfred for the angry players to thread the needle and to have a lasting impact. And your. There's no question when you say to one of those angry fans. Yes we're going to censor the astros. They would look at it as being like a nerd move versus what they feel like the Astros would deserve but think about it if rob Manfred went to the other twenty nine owners and ask them for vote and it was twenty nine to one against the astros that they're going to censure the two thousand seventeen astros for their actions for their cheating and then rob at that point could forward that to the players association and say look. This is what we did and we would love to have the player second. There's vote and it would be noted in record books going forward that would be an indelible stain on what that team accomplished. And I wouldn't be I think is media as stripping them of their title. It wouldn't feel as good as taking away. The Players Championship rings are taken away their money. But I think that would last a long time. Never be forgotten so the Astros play their first training game tomorrow against the Washington nationals the two teams that were in last year's world series. What do you think the atmosphere is going to be like? It's GonNa be wild first off you know I was talking with a high ranking club executive the other day who suggested that you might see teams. Have you know trash can day all around baseball through two thousand twenty and we're probably going to get the first field for that? We're someone's GONNA find a way to get a trash. Can Lid into the ballpark and just be banging on it. The whole game. I think people are wondering if right from the get-go they're going to be a bunch of hit by pitches and bench clearing brawls in a hockey game breaking out. I don't think it'll be that way at the outset. But I think that what the Astros are going to experience in terms of Fan. Reaction is not like anything we've ever seen before it'll be less when they're playing their home games. But I feel like that. They're eighty-one road games. This year are going to be like eighty one. Perp walks that every time they go out on a field they are going to hear it in a way we never seen before. Look I covered Roberto Alamar. When he went through spitting incident in every game there after when he was playing on the road for the rest of his career he was booed and it really bothered him. Barry Bonds had a similar treatment as you get closer to breaking Hank Aaron's record because of the specter of steroids but in talking with players on other teams. They really wonder if you're going to see some of the Astros affected by this especially when going through slump. You imagine you know if you're over ten over eleven that's hard enough to deal with but then you walk them back to the Dugout and you're twenty voices. What do you need to know what the pitch was? Do you need someone to Bang Trash? Can you know for one day but for day after day after day? Three to four hours of that type of feedback when you're playing on the road that's going to be hard. I live in Los Angeles. I'm not a dodgers fan but I'm really tempted to go to a game when the Astros show up just to see how people try to sneak. Trash can lids into the stadium. Oh Yeah and in fact you've seen stories about how dodger fans have decided that they're all going to make the trip down to Anaheim the first time the astros play at the angels in Barry Bonds last years of his career the giants consistently led the major leagues and wrote attendance. And you know why because people wanted to go and boo him will now you have this entire team that is drawn? Ira OF FANS and other players. And you know that's all going to coalesce day after day this summer so. I know this is very bad for baseball. It's very bad for rob Manfred. It's very bad for the integrity of the game. But in a way is it also kind of good. I mean I WANNA watch every astros game this year. Yeah Meena our first game with our Sunday night group is angels at Astros and I know that the ratings for that game. We're going to be really high because everyone's going to wonder what's going to happen big picture. It's not a good thing for baseball. That people now look back at the results of the two thousand seventeen world series. The Red Sox winning in two thousand eighteen the alleged buzzer situation with Jose Altuve and the Astros in two thousand nineteen and wonder if what they saw was real you do wonder if some fans might just throw their hands up and say you know what. I'm sick of this. I spent all this money. I watch games and now you're telling me what I saw wasn't real. They may lose people because of that. Thanks so much buster. Thanks for coming up with expanding the. Nfl playoffs be bad for football. Here's another story. I want you to know yesterday the. Nfl owners met in New York City Manhattan Hotel in approved a new labor agreement with two major changes that have sent shockwaves across the league. One would entail adding a seventeenth regular season game and the other would expand the playoffs from twelve teams to fourteen the NFL Players Association Executive Committee and representatives from all. Thirty two teams. They're holding a call today to discuss the deal which would have to be approved by a majority vote from all players. There's much to be discussed about the financial ramifications for both the League and players the effects on their health and how this will affect the sport as a whole but for now. I only WanNa talk about one thing which I imagine isn't going to be holed up for the players but has given pause to some fans the expanded playoff field. Now some of the blowouts. You've seen on wild card weekend. In recent years have people concerned that expanding the field would give us a lot of bad football if we had fourteen teams this year we would have gotten Patrick. Mahomes versus duck. Hodges which doesn't seem fair the majority of teams that would have gotten in since two thousand and two. What if one around nine games which isn't very appealing. But if you dig deeper into the numbers you'll see that a lot of those teams were actually pretty good indeed in the five years before last season according to football outsiders. Dvr A stat which measures efficiency the thirteenth seed was better than more than four of the teams that ended up making it into the postseason and two of those teams. Baltimore in two thousand Seventeen and Philadelphia in two thousand. Fourteen were better than half of the playoff field. So I'll it made feel as though expanding. The field is like lowering the minimum. Gpa boost college admissions. The quality of play probably won't decline that much. NFL Draft: Round One Reveals

"Twenty-six pick in the two thousand twenty. Nfl draft the Green Bay Packers Select Jordan Love quarterback Utah State. That was the sound of what was probably the most surprising moment and last night's NFL draft. Well that and the scene at titans head coach. Mike Variables House while to a Tunga. Vilo ended up where he was expected to. Land All along in Miami. There's still plenty of shockers in the first round. Espn's Michael Junior joins us to break down the most interesting picks and the ones that didn't happen. I mean it comes. It's Friday April. Twenty four th this is. Espn daily a kind of a little. All right so Mike. We thought there might be some shockers involving the quarterbacks but in the end after so much discussion over whether to might slide in whether Justin Herbert would be drafted before him to it ended up in Miami and Herbert was taken by the chargers. The actual shocker. We'll get to those guys in a second. But the real surprise was Jordan love the Utah State quarterback going to Green Bay at Twenty Six. What was your immediate reaction him. Can I get a camera on twelve in green bay right now like Aaron Rodgers head to be hot coming off of that one because Jordan love? I think we all kind of wear the same place. There's a ton of upside with that pick potentially a crazy arm to work with probably going to be a couple of years away which is fine but Aaron Rodgers has three years left on his deal. I believe in extension that he signed and that offense needs plenty of help. You could've used a tackle because you ause Brian Blaga. You can certainly use more weapons to try and arm your hall of fame quarterback with when you were a team that was a game away from potentially being a super bowl contender so i. I really didn't understand that one and I thought you on our draft broadcast that used the term opportunity costs seem to be the big L. for the packers. There I think the confusion there is not only over. You know when is stored in love actually going to start. Aaron Rodgers has multiple years left on his very large contract. This is a Philip rivers or drew brees situation where we might actually see him stating for a year learning behind the veteran and then coming back or coming in rather that's a question and then the other one is boy. They really didn't get a weapon for Aaron. You know and I think that's what most people expected them to do the draft there were still some really talented receivers on the board. I didn't see packers fach fans reactions to the pig that I imagine. They were pretty stunned. Yeah and like you said this is a year where I understand the wide receiver draft. You could argue that because of the depth of the class you can get something closely resembling what you want in the second round. Hell maybe even into the third round but with that being such a pressing need. And let's be real like we don't know even in a world where quarterbacks are playing well under the forties. We don't know necessarily how long the window stays as open as it seems right now for the packers and so not capitalizing there. I think is GonNa be something that haunts them this year in the packers picking later on in the second round means they could miss out on some of those virus. Here's let's get back to to fifth pick in the two thousand twenty. Nfl draft the Miami Dolphins left to a tongue of our quarterback Alabama. So like I said after so much conversation and also Mike whether or not Miami would have to trade up potentially into the third or four spots. They sat there and they got the man they've been linked with a long. How do you like the fit with Miami? I like the fit with Miami. I think as much as I would like to sit with anybody right like outside of Joe. Borough was the one prospect that I think we all agreed from a football standpoint. Does all of the things you want a quarterback to do well. He's extremely quick when it comes to processing. He's got an arm that maybe isn't going to blow you away but can make all the throws and I think just as important as anything for me with Miami. Is You drafted Austin Jackson at offensive tackle at USC? Later in the first round. You're going to try and bolster that position. You made some picks their last year. But it's still a work in progress and I think the best thing to a does with his mobility is not run of the four quarterbacks that we saw drafted in the first round he had the fewest Russia's on scramble or design runs last year in college football but what he does is get himself away from pressure really well and we know that is part of going to a bad team as a quarterback of the top ended the draft and so I think that standpoint probably helps Miami the most if he does see the field in year one or even in the year to the quarterback who was drafted after him. Justin Herbert does run and he runs very very well. I actually think it's one of his strongest attributes. Aside from his powerful arm in Los Angeles. He gets a coach. Anthony Lynn. Who has worked with mobile quarterbacks in the past their current starter tyrod Taylor and him had a great dual threat attack in Buffalo. So I imagine the offense that they Taylor for Herbert would be very very different from what we sell. Philip rivers operate last year. What do you make of the situation? Herbert's walking into and do you think he starts immediately or sits behind tyrod for awhile I think. Ideally he would sit behind tyrod and what you just mentioned there with that offense in combination what he can do not having the necessarily tailor it to just one of those quarterbacks right like in theory with that you can run and operate a very similar offense with tyrod as your starter and you've brought this up and I think rightly so tyrod is a guy who mentors very well. I understand for him. That's probably not ideal. He would like to start. But you're in a quarterback room that's going to be conducive to learning for a backup and conducive to playing to that strength of all right. If the first reads not there we can get down and we can use those legs. We can build in some of those design plays for you to maximize the strength early while you build and try and make sure that the rest of those gifts that went under developed in an Oregon Offense. That was not at friendly one for quarterbacks start to develop towards the NFL level might. This is the third time in the common draft era. That three quarterbacks were taken in the top six last time was in one thousand nine hundred ninety nine however only four were taken in the first round. Were you surprised that another quarterback wasn't drafted last night? I think I was surprised but almost a bit relieved right like we tend to see the quarterback market always sort of accordion together and bring guys into the first round. That don't necessarily I hesitate to say deserve to be there but merit that based on their skill when you looked at the guys that were outside of that top. Four Jacobs in Jake frahm. Maybe jalen hurts out of Oklahoma. I think with all of them. There are enough flaws that you're going to have to work around. That made them more of a project than the first round. Should have to or be willing to take on again kind of going. Back to the packers and Aaron Rodgers Point. I don't think you want to spend that kind of draft capital on a guy who's not going to help you right away. Who certainly going to need that kind of time to develop so after the Jordan love pick. I think the other big surprise of the night was that Henry rugs the Alabama wide receiver was the first white out drafted overall stake. In by the raiders. Most people had him third behind Jerry. Judy who went fifteenth to Denver and CD Lamb. Who fell all the way to seventeen with the cowboys? Do you think it's a good fit with the raiders? And how do you like those other fits? Yeah it certainly seems. Like the most traditionally raiders. Pick possible. Right like Al Davis somewhere smiling downsizing take the burner take forty time and run with it. So I do like the fit. It's going to be interesting. Derek Carr hasn't had deep weapons like that in a couple of years now and as it was pointed out to us tonight. By our resident raiders. Fan Jason Fitz. When he had some of those options like Amari Cooper and others he was willing to go down field that being Derek Carr can they make use of that an offense that was much more works work short across the middle of the field and tryin let guys get yards after the catch as far as the other fix? I Love Jerry Judy in Denver having that combination of receivers there with him in Portland Sutton I think gives drew lock a real chance to go out and be successful this year and my God. The Dallas Cowboys identity shift is fully complete now from a new put. A bunch of tight ends and run the ball down everyone throats. Zeke Elliott offense to one. That's going to be going four and five wide and spraying it all over these weapons between the aforementioned Amari Cooper Michael Gallup but now. Cd-rom in a fold there. I mean what a great world. Now for Zeke Elliot. Who was used to a lot of heavy box? Looks who's now going to get much easier spots to try and run through because everyone's going to have to worry about covering those receivers Dallas cowboys often. That was already one of the most efficient offenses in football last year. I feel like Mike. Mccarthy showed up and just gave himself a gift absolutely. I'll take one of those CD. Lambs all right after the break. Let's talk about some of the other big surprises in the draft. And of course your favorite unit the offensive line coach at autozone. They're all about giving you more choices to help you get what you need and get it fast if you need. Something for a job has to get done today. Just order autozone dot com and choose free. That can wait until tomorrow. That's autozone helps you get your job. Done easier. Restrictions AND DETAILS AT AUTO ZONE DOT COM. Get into zone autozone with the eighth. Pick in the two thousand twenty. Nfl DRAFT THE ARIZONA. Cardinals. Select Isaiah Simmons Linebacker Clemson so Mike. We've talked a lot about ISIAH DEF- While I was called him Isaiah Defense. You know what keep that in because it feels right because I was gonNA say Isaiah Simmons who was a linebacker but also a safety but also a slack corner but really. He plays defense. That's how he describes it. Summit projected him going as high as fourth overall to New York but he felt to eight the the Arizona cardinals which wasn't a position people expected Arizona target. But I don't think they expected him to be available there. How do you think you'll be used in Arizona and do you like that a landing spot I do? I think when you look at that secondary and you're certainly familiar with a lot of those pieces as there are a lot of former Washington huskies in the Arizona secondary but I think adding him to that unit where to me. He always feels more at home. If you'RE GONNA try and peg him at one spot. I would much rather it be safety over a traditional linebacker type role that being said the hope is that they have the imagination to use him in the way that he deserves. Meaning you're right. Make him defense make him multiple. Make him the tight end equivalent for what you. WanNa do on defense you would never have asked Rob Gronkowski to just be in line blocker or just via guy split out wide the beauty these kind of athletes. Is You get to use them as chess pieces. That can put the other side of the football and a compromise position. And I don't know of anyone going to do that on defense potentially as well as is as speaking of Rob Gronkowski. Isaiah Simmons is a tight end neutralizer. He's also a great quarterback spy in my feeling. Mike is that you don't even want to tag him with position. You want to assign him players. If you're playing the San Francisco. Forty niners have him. Cover George kittle. You know what I mean like always target the players playing the Ravens. He's on Lamar Jackson. For example that to me is the best. Way To use a talent of that caliber. Just turn on some clemson tape. Like don't be afraid to say Brent. Venables is really good at his job. Maybe we should steal some of the things he did with this freak of nature so there weren't that many trades in the first half of the draft. Actually according to Adam Schefter. This is the first time since two thousand fifteen that there wasn't a trade in the top ten but one of the trades later on that was intriguing was the Tampa Bay buccaneers. We're the forty niners trade. They're going to trade with the Tampa. Bay buccaneers Tom. Brady's bucks are moving up one slot to come up in this draft. They're still tackle on the board fading up just to get there right. Tackle Tristian worse and it was after. The three offensive tackles many grouped with him. Andrew Thomas Jeter quills and MCI. Becton came off the board. What do you think of the order in which those players were taken? Please draw on your expertise as a former offensive lineman. Yes now order. Wise may not have been the exact order I would have taken. I thought pure talent wise. Regardless of what side of the line someone plays on Jesuit wills was going to be the best offensive in this draft. That being said I can understand the Andrew. Thomas Pick Very Clean Guy. Great player with a lot of pedigree from Georgia offensive line unit. That certainly has shelled out. Guys like one of my personal favorites large adults on Isaiah win. Who is now in New England so I understand that at the top but when we got down to Tampa it was interesting because you already had the physical freak. Mci backed off the board and Jesuit wills at that point and so you're left with the last of the four. I think real sure things with Tampa Bay. We know protecting Tom Brady. Now is the priority. The Trent Williams market was going to be too rich for your taste and so moving and making sure I got the last of the four guys that we talked about all really in the mix for the first hackel potentially taken off the board interest in worse just a ton of ability there that if you can refine just a bit is a guy with all pro capability. One of the other surprising moments involving alignment was win. The Saints who took a center last year in the draft in the second round. Those Eric McCoy picked Michigan Series at twenty four. Instead of a linebacker is a lot of people thought they might address. What did you make of that selection? The rich get richer. Like if you look in this draft overall San Francisco Getting Giovane Kim Law falling down to them and certainly for the Saints Offensive. Line has been touted as a strength for a couple of years. Now they added Ryan Ramczyk at right tackle. Not Too long ago. And you mentioned the Eric McCoy. Pick Caesar Ruis the guy who played center for Michigan last year but has some garden is passed to his game. Certainly slide there as it seems like. Wofford is on his way out at the right guard spot there but I just think smart teams like this in the NFL. Draft tend to look and say all right. We don't have a desperate need really in any one spot. Why don't we continue to fortify the area of strength make it even better in what maybe drew brees his final year and ensure that we're going to give that offense the best chance to continue succeed with that as a strength speaking of very good teams? The chief said last pick draft and they took a running back Clyde Edwards Hilar- out of lsu instead of a corner. Mike you now. I feel about drafting running backs in the first round. What will you do for that offense? And I just WANNA save begrudgingly. I share your taste. Like as a former offensive lineman talking downgrading the value of the running back position hurts my soul in a very real way that being said Clyde Edwards. Allaire may not have been my rb one. That was probably de'andre swift but I don't know if you could tailor a better fit to what. Kansas City does on offense very similar. Quite frankly to Clyde Edwards Allaire was dealing with at Lsu more five-man protections than any offense in college football last year. A guy who is maybe the best pure pass catcher of any of the running backs in the group this year and who can operate really well in some of those zone running plays those new blocking schemes. That aren't gonNA make a ton of use of tight ends in multiple bodies like that in the middle of the field. I love him as a fit. And that offense now. Multiple weapons on every level. Good luck I hope you can get to the passer and Patrick Mahomes in under two seconds because if not that ball is in the hands of someone very dangerous. Who's likely got one of the only one on one match ups on the field. Good night anyone. You were surprised wasn't picked in the first round I think sticking with Lsu Christian Fulton and I understand when you're watching the tape of lsu's coroner's last year. Your eyes are probably drawn Derek Stanley Junior. Who is like a future top? Five pick as a true freshman for them but Christian Fulton is a very good corner one that I can't believe in draft. I think we saw five or six corners drafted in the first round. He wasn't one of the names. Mike I think perhaps the biggest surprise ask from Jordan Levin Henry Rugs and these is of Cliff Kingsbury House. Good Lord was that nothing really went wrong I mean there couple minor glitches but for the most part from a technological standpoint. This was pretty smooth. How did that feel to you? It did it felt very clean and I want to get ahead tip to our coverage of the WNBA draft last week. I looked at that as a production lock done largely by our folks and I said all right everyone involved in that process from the TV broadcast side to the teams making picks to the commissioner all seem to operate pretty smoothly after some practice in that spot we know and we heard very often about how much time the NFL spent practicing this week. So it seemed to pay off and and I think the lack of trades that we really saw in the first round probably aided that to some extent but for the most part there who knew that all of these guys in their rooms with various people and win obey goes in the park in the driveway or all the other twenty five screens. That Schneider has going on somehow manage to pull this off all right. Thanks so much bye. Get some sleep. I'll talk to you tomorrow. Coming up could soccer return soon in Spain. Here's another story. I want you to know the. Nfl draft has given football fans something to cheer for. There is still a lack of clarity around. How the actual seasons going to play out but in Europe football as in football football as in soccer appears to be on the precipice of coming back this week. The German football league announced that Bundesliga could restart as soon as the main knife as long as they get a green light from the government. The head of the League's Task Force on the issue says they'd need to administer more than ten thousand Cova nineteen tests over a ten week period season as well as practicing social distancing and monitoring and limiting gatherings now. This is being discussed there in large part because Germany has fought the crow virus with great success. There's actually been a decline there and confirmed cases since mid April so it might be more realistic to restart soccer there than it is in Spain. One of the hardest hit countries and yet Lolita one of the two main Spanish leagues is also considering a comeback. New York Times reported Thursday that the League is targeting a June return. The Times got their hands on the guidelines established for doing so and they are stripped players. Have to go through a month long. Training Protocol. They don't have to be tested of course and only allowed to practice together in small groups at first and any player who test positive would be sent home to isolate. Teammates would also be tested as well. It remains to be seen if any of this can actually happen or if the players coaches and staffers would even comply but they have strong incentive to do so the League has said that calling off the season would cost teams more than one billion dollars times and this has been espn daily our show is produced by Alexander Hyacinth. Today's episode Soda One. I thought you'd especially like please listen and subscribe to Espn daily wherever you get your favorite podcasts. Anytime you get a good spread on the football. I think there's two good pressure pressure points. There's this finger in this day. I used to put this middle finger on the top as my hands crew. That's just foul right where I do it. My hands aren't the biggest ring finger on the end. End and fifty four down. That's Tom Brady Carson wentz and Baker Mayfield talking about the most clutch relationship. In any quarterbacks life is grip on the football itself. It's unique unique and personal as a fingerprint forged over a lifetime of playing today. We get a firm grasp on how quarterbacks hold the ball and Y I mean times. It's Friday November twenty second this is espn daily presented by indeed. Dave I got to give you a hand. You've really got your finger on the pulse of the NFL. Joe This project snap right. Oh No rob brutal day. Fleming is a senior writer for ESPN SPE- N his latest journalistic toward a force is on NFL quarterback grips. Well let's start here. What made you want to write about quarterback quarterback grips in the first place so there was a trick we used to play? I used to play on Peyton manning you could never get him to talk period if you ask them like about his family or his brothers or anything. The shades would just come down and he'd be like signaling the PR the people but if you asked him about like a cornerback took an outside stance on a third down pass play a month ago he would talk for like forty five minutes nonstop. It's remarkable that nobody he asked anybody let alone quarterbacks these types of questions honestly can see them their eyes light up when it's like you're not asking about an injury or an upcoming opponent. Tell me story about. Who taught you how to group of football and all of a sudden? It's like a one question interview because they just go for ten or fifteen minutes. I thought at the beginning there would be such little differentiation between the grips and the stories that we wouldn't have anything but it was like almost every conversation revealed something really cool about either. Who taught them or a quirk to their or grip? It was a cool window into quarterbacks. What is the most common way for a quarterback grid there are seven leases on an NFL football? So if you're holding out in front of you and your right hand. The thumb obviously goes under the pointer finger goes between the top lace and the the cone of the football and then they had like this language. It's based on what lace your Pinky tucks into whether a Tux under the laces or over the leases. And then what lace your ring finger is on the most common thing is to under five which means your ring finger is on the second lace and your Pinky is tucked below the fifth. Lace the pointer finger and your middle finger are the last to leave the ball and that really determines trajectory and spin and so a lot of guys say that those are because they're the last one touching the ball. Those are the most important there. Were a couple of guys who I was like. Okay I have to chop off one finger and then you can keep throwing knowing which one would it be and most of them chose the pinky. I was surprised. That is a very strange question to in McCoy in the backfield. They're gonNA throw a DNA Psych Celtic touchdown learn. So when you ask these quarterbacks about how exactly they hold the ball. What kind of answers did you get? There are little quirks and tendencies that every quarterback has with their grip. Most quarterback coaches will tell you to leave space between your palm and the football. Patrick mahomes loves to palm the ball. Somebody like Josh Allen Matt Ryan. Tom Brady those guys. Have a pretty traditional grip. Where it's you know? Ring Ring Finger over about the second lace and pinkie honor around the fourth or fifth. Oh and then. Of course there's Ben Rothlisberger who literally sounds like he's never thought about added more than two seconds. You always have time to find the laces I think. Sometimes you catch. I always get like one quick. Turn if I get. If you don't have all just come out that answer. It didn't surprise me at all. I think one thing. I've an interesting about your story. It's not just about how these guys grip the ball. It's how vacationing to grip the ball. What are some of the origin stories? For how these quarterbacks develop their grips so one of the origin stories that actually I found quite sad sad was Mitch Trubisky. No poor guy shouldn't pile on but his dad claims that he could throw a spiral at the age of two. You and then Mitch went onto. Reveal that when he had no one to play catch with he would just throw the ball up in the air and run under and catch it and throw it again. I I thought that was. That's either like a Calvin Hobbes cartoon or the saddest quarterbacks story I've ever heard Uh Josh Allens was similar in tone to that he claims that he sort of learned or strengthen his arm through throwing rocks in his backyard byard or out of his dad's workshop and I actually thought this was kind of cute. His Dad was like well. Maybe you could be a quarterback sadder Mitch trubisky with no one to throw to or Josh Allen so lonely he just throws rocks against the dumpster. Dad which I do today I don't know go throw rocks. SNAP DERIVE GONNA cut it loose. There's Red Lake caught it touchdown Atlanta in that Ryan's mom also have some influence on his group. Are Mom always would tell us when we were young too not to bite your nails because that forefinger you want a little bit on on the end of it to get that last little bit for spiral so the only way she got him to stop biting his nails was she was like look that index finger. That nail is the last thing to leave the ball. And if you WANNA throw a tight spiral you better quit chewing your nails. This would make a great. PSA for MOMS who are trying to get their teenage H.. Boys to stop biting their nails. I was GONNA say I'm a nail biter and I tried everything you know. The Bidder Nail Polish turns out. I should have just played quarterback. That is the answer to stopping thing. Well I'm sorry to tell you that's why you never made the NFL. So you found out how these guys learn their grips were were any of them told along the way to change it. I think the best example of that is Lamar Jackson. During his rookie year. They noticed he was struggling a a little bit with with accuracy problems and his quirks that he keeps the pointer finger almost all the way to the cone of the ball. Most guys keep it down maybe two or three inches closer to the laces and he likes it just because of the stability and sort of as a way to point the ball so they said you know you should experiment with moving your finger back and I think he was cooperative. Instead I'll I'll think about it. I think they were in the playoffs. And they were at two production meetings. And Kurt Warner are you at a desk. Kurt Warner sort of throw them a football. He grabs it in his hand. Kurt Warner goes let me see your grip. And lamarche Rosen is grip and Kurt Warner's like like. Oh Man I I keep my finger all the way at the cone of the ball to. He's like don't let anybody change that. If that's what you like to do keep doing it that way. And Lamar was just like. Oh that's awesome. What better proof do I have that? I shouldn't change anything then. A Hall of fame quarterback telling me it's perfect right where it is coming up. F- scouts are obsessed with hand size. But doesn't even matter. Boom boom. Oh Gee advisor who can help you find. Just the right tech- that's eight seven seven by Dell or visit Dell Dot com slash sbblackfriday. Dave how would you say it affects. It's a quarterback script when he injures his hand does it force him to change it. The thing I noticed with quarterbacks who injured their hands or had to learn to read grip the football was was they were the ones who really understood and sort of had broken down the dynamics and the fundamentals and the mechanics of the grip just because they had to kind of recreate their step by step and drew brees is a great example of that you know. He gave that tutorial for for the press. What he discovered was when you talk about grip strength? It's really the way you pinch the cone of the ball between your thumb and your forefinger. Football is the one where you really have to extend your thumb all the way around into pretty large angle. I mean look at the spread between Pinky and foam. You know that's hard to do. He was like that's the most important part of holding onto the ball. Is that squeezing being of the thumb and the forefinger. So that's probably the hardest part was just getting to where I could grip the ball again and then be able to guide the ball maneuver the ball and I think that's that's what really he was waiting on as rehabbed to determine when he would come back. I have a great jamarcus Russell Story I was at his pro day at Lsu and he was spraying the ball all over the field. I mean and this is under controlled circumstances. It's going when like over receivers heads it's hitting the turf. It was like maybe connecting on fifty percent of his passes. And I'm like this is huge news. I mean he can barely throw the ball and so I follow a GM who I know out of the field house and I'm like what did you think that was not very good and the GM was like did you see see the size of his hands. They're huge and I was at always struck me to this day right. It's like well. WHO cares how big his hands are if he can't throw the ball they measure for hand size and it's like the be all end all in scouting but what they should be measuring for is hand strength? Well let's just tack on a day to the combine. And we'll do the Dave Flemming grip. Strength Test was going to say instead of measuring the hands. They should have like those things they have at county fairs. Where you gotTa grab draw you are? This is I knew runs same wavelength because I thinking the exact same thing. I'm like just bring in one of those grip strength things from an arcade. Let's be real people would watch. Sign me up right. Now I think of quarterbacks with notoriously smaller muller hands like your jared Goff's or your Baker Mayfield's and why agree with you. I don't sneak hand size correlates with accuracy Baker. Mayfield one of the most most accurate college quarterbacks of all time I wonder if it just changes the way they actually have to hold seemed to me that it does. I think what was striking for me when you go from talking to Matt Ryan and he talks about will you're supposed to keep this pocket between your palm and the football and I was always taught the most important thing is to not squeeze it to death and leave a pocket of space there and then you go to Kansas City and you talk to Patrick Mahomes and you say what's the most important thing. What's the signature part of your grip? And he's like well I I love Palman the ball. And you're just like nobody knows anything. There are some common elements. But it's really sort of the signature part of every quarterbacks. We're back scheme. A lot of the young guys their ability I think to transition the football inflict. The football must like baseball is some of these. Young guys are spinning the ball. So good. That was Tom. Tom Brady on some of the young quarterbacks Mahomes Kyla Murray Baker Mayfield all of them have baseball backgrounds. Do you think that affects the way they grip the football. I think it does. I think those guys like to have as much contact as possible with the football and the home said I mean. He thought that that was from all the pitching Nettie did and all the things that he learned from his dad. You know it doesn't need to be an exact science when you're pitching your hand and your grip is constantly moving all over over the baseball and I think he sort of takes that mentality especially like on blitzes or three step drop. He might not even get his fingers on the laces he just. This doesn't think about he might use a cm football as grip or as a lace and and let it fly that way that brings up another issue that I wonder sure about. Which is quarterbacks are getting rid of the ball more quickly than ever right because of the rise of spread offense in the NFL? Does that change the way they grip it they they have to learn not to rely on a perfect grip to throw the ball. Every time we talked I talked to somebody. I brought football so that they could show and demonstrate and they each quarterback had sort of their own unique nervous way of either spinning or flipping or bouncing the football. So that they could grip it and regroup it. I mean they must do that. A million times so that under the worst possible conditions their fingers go back to the exact same place no matter what what did talking to. All these quarterbacks about their grips change the way. You hold a football. No here's okay. I Have Baker Mayfield hands. I think I would have been a one under four guy classic. Yeah but what it really taught me was at the end of my interview with Matt Ryan. You'll like this. There were no words spoken. I just dropped my mic and ran toward the end zone knowing that Matt and I were on the same wavelength and sure enough I look up and there's like there's like a perfect spiral and instead of being just a normal appreciative guy and catching the ball with both hands and saying thank you. That was really cool. I tried to Odell Beckham. Come junior it with one hand and dropped it and Matt Ryan literally like shook his head like peyton manning on Saturday night live and was like you've discussed me bro Thank you dave. This was gripping always happy to give you a hand coming up one man's steadfast commitment to his favorite team and to his word. ESPN daily covering the greatest sports stories. Raise in history. Get a Grip! NFL QB Secrets to Handling the Pigskin

"Hi It's Munich host of the ESPN daily podcast. Wake up to the best story. You'll hear all day twenty minutes a day five days a week where you get an inside look look at the most interesting stories that espn as told by the top reporters that insiders on the planet the breaking news is sportscenter with deep dive storytelling of thirty for thirty. It's based on what lace your Pinky tucks into whether a Tux under the laces or over the laces and then what lace your ring finger is on. The most common thing is to under five. Which means your ring finger is on the second lace and your Pinky is tucked below the fifth lace the pointer finger and your middle finger are the last to leave the ball and that really determines trajectory and spin and so a lot of guys say that those are because they're the last one touching the ball? Maybe you could be a quarterback sadder Mitch trubisky with no one to throw to or Josh Allen so lonely that he just throws rocks against the dumpster dad which I do today. I don't know go throw rocks. That is the answer to stopping. Hot Seat Szn: The NFL Coaching Carousel

"Hi It's Mimi host of the ESPN daily podcast. Wake up to the best story. You'll hear all day twenty minutes a day five days a week where you get an inside look look at the most interesting stories at ESPN. As told by the top reporters that insiders on the planet the breaking news is sportscenter with deep dive storytelling of thirty for thirty. Today's episode episode one. I thought you'd like please listen and subscribe to Espn daily wherever you get your favorite podcasts. Jason Garrett is done and we talk about it every single year about how you know. Hey He's on the hot seat. Well this thing right now dude he be getting botches without it happens every year when NFL season winds down coaches on losing teams across the League are feeling the heat as ritual known as black Monday approaches breakdown. which seats are the warmest and who might be next in line for the biggest jobs in the NFL? I mean times. It's Friday December twentieth. This is espn daily presented by indeed. Dan Dan how you doing. I'm good week. Sixteen Dan Graziano is an NFL insider for ESPN well with week. Sixteen and for some teams It's very exciting. We're looking towards the playoffs with other teams and other fan bases. It's hot seat season. Dan Can you you explain to us. How you know coaches on the hot seat usually? It's either there's some sort of turmoil like the locker room is is losing. Its mind or there's like some some kind of internal tension between the coach and the Front Office war. It's a coach. That's been there awhile. And kind of is on his second or third chance and he's still like limping toward five and eleven. And you know I think those are pretty much the obvious signs and then I think you just sort of have to start poking around then ask the people in charge. Do you think you make a change here and you can find out yes you can find out. No sometimes you know Detroit. Lions come out and say they're not firing Matt Patricia. Detroit fight lions owner Martha firestone Ford announced today that hey coach Matt Patricia and GM. Bob Quinn will be back next season. It could get to the point. Where at least becomes an obvious his worthwhile question to ask how much does sort of longevity matter towards determining whether coaches really on the hot seat do coaches? You've only been there a year. Like Zack Taylor. In Cincinnati tend to get more leeway in general. Yeah I don't. I think it's pretty unusual for for a team to go. After one year I mean Arizona last year did it because they were just kind of changing their whole plan right like yeah. Nothing against you. Steve wilks but we are going to draft this quarterback Kyle Amaury. We're going to pair them with a coach thinking. When you're just GONNA pretend the year two thousand eighteen never happened and start scratching twenty nineteen with new coach and quarterback even though we just did that? So it's pretty unusual. Yeah I think like look at Zach Taylor in Cincinnati. He succeeds a guy that was there for sixteen years. Marvin Lewis so when Zack Taylor gets that job. He knows he's going to a place where they're likely to be patient. Ready Kitchen get the job in Cleveland. He knows that the place where historically they have not been patient but yeah I think you have to give a couple couple or three years. The flip side is everybody always points out is the Pittsburgh steelers only had three different coaches in the last fifty years and have won. Six super bowls you know. I think everybody would like it to be like that. Not Everybody has that kind of patience or success. Let's talk about Freddie Kitchens. I think going into the season. The browns had probably greater expectations than most of the teams were talking talking about by any measure. It's been a disappointment. A lot of the pundits out there said they were going to be the super bowl. That was the team. Freddie Kitchens a lot of people talked about him and his job but he had to win a couple of these games on the stretch and this was a big loss Dan. You mentioned that in the past. They've gone through coaches quickly in Cleveland. How how do you think that perception affects the decision making of the browns? They don't want to be a team. That constantly changes coaches fires coaches. But that doesn't mean they won't be because I mean you can convince yourself at all. I can't believe we're doing this again. But it's the right thing. 'cause Freddie Kitchens was obviously the wrong decision vision of why would we compound that by bringing him back for another year when when he's shown that he can't handle it and again I'm just I'm this is me imagining an internal monologue or Jimmy has but we have a guy that we definitely don't think is the guy then we have to move on and try and find someone who is Dan You talked about. How if it's only been a year? Sometimes a team will say. Let's give this guy a chance to turn things around. But it's been a couple of years in in Detroit with Matt Patricia. Why do you think that team came out before black Monday? And said we're going to hang onto him despite the fact that he's one In two seasons as many games as Jim Caldwell one in a single season before he was fired in Detroit I think the key is bob coined the GM right he comes from New England. He gets rid of Caldwell he goes and six out Patricia who knows from New England and he has sold ownership on. We can build this thing. Long-term here's what Martha firestone foreign said about her decision to bring back both former patriots quote. We expect to be a playoff contender. We expect to play meaningful games in December as she's referring bring to next season when she brings him back whatever he's told them about here are signs that it can work. They've bought whether they're correct or not. I think you know the former New England crew. That's running the Detroit. Lions has convinced Detroit Lions Ownership. Here's why this can work here. We're sorry it hasn't worked right away but two years isn't long enough. Give us another chance. And we'll see how much does the GM matter when we're looking at these teams in trying to evaluate whether or not they're going to move on from their head coach well matters a lot. It commensurate a couple of different ways one. How tied together are they did the GM hire the coach? And right now when when Quinn goes Detroit cold wells already there. You figure we'll cold well. It's not going to last because Quinn's GonNa WanNa bring in his own Guy Lo and behold that happen happen so if you are the guy that the GM hired that might help you if you are the guy that GM hired but it's going poorly and you're the the first guy the GM hired then. Recent history has shown us that you are the one in trouble and the GM is not there are coaches out. There that will tell you that. GM sits in the owner's box. He talks to the owner all game. He's the voice he hears while the coaches are down there on the field losing and it's pretty easy for the GM that kind of position himself. Like hey this isn't my fault. Let's make a change and try it another either way. I do think there are situations where you see more and more around the league where it goes in the other direction where. The coach kind of picks up in San Francisco. John Lynch came because Kyle Shanahan wanted wanted him in Buffalo Brandon. Beane came because Sean McDermott wanted him so I like that. Formula Teens are using now or they get the coach. I coach brings in mm somebody. He knows he can believe in. They understand the salary cap in the same way and can do all that administrative stuff together. I think that's that's a formula that looks like it's working in a few spots. Uh So dan. In sort of walking through the red flags for coaches one of the things you mentioned is sometimes you have a coach who's fairly successful but perhaps has grown stagnant and when that the first name that came to mind for me was Jason and Garrett in Dallas a team that could very well win the division but do you think even if they do that they might still end up splitting with their head coach now that gets tricky for a couple reasons one year behind right if he wins the division. And let's say he wins his first playoff game and he still has to do more than that. You end up. Let go of your coach in the middle of January and some teams have already hired coaches. And maybe you didn't get a chance to get at the guy you wanted but I think in the case in Dallas you have have a coach. It's been there a long time and the expectations have been higher than what he's achieved. So I really think that it's true what we can say all year about Garrett which is he's gotTa make a playoff run on have a chance to keep his job. What did you say? I really didn't hear you. You need to see from Jason to bring him back in twenty twenty. I really didn't hear you the drill going back over there next question. A the storm cloud hanging over Jason Garrett. That's not new. That's really been hanging over him for if not a couple of seasons at least at the beginning of this one. How do you think it affects the team? When everyone knows static coaches really coaching for his job it can get a team down? It depends how they feel about the coach. I was covering the giants at the end of the Tom. Coughlin her you know. He's twelve twelve years and they like the time he was done. The locker room felt like disappointed in itself for not being able to save him so that can happen and I think they're opposite situations where players are sick of the coach. And they don't they don't mind that he's gone. I just don't think like impure in a playoff race. The Dallas Cowboys. When you're spending too much time sitting there thinking? Oh well we really need to win this or else Jason's like like you're trying to win it. Take them to the playoffs and make some extra money and get good and and maybe try and get a super bowl ring. But I think towards the end of the season when when all is lost. When you're not in contention you see a lot of teams shut it down like the way Carolina's performing right now as an example? It's just not one hundred percent up for it and I think that can happen when there's a coaching situation. It can show up but it can also go the other way. Atlanta Falcons playing very very hard for Dan. Quinn the Falcons knock the forty niners off the top of the NFC with a seven point win. Twenty nine twenty two the final at the end Game on the line. Those are the moments coach that you totally live for makes you feel most. I was awesome. Dan It's funny you mention Quinn. Because I've been thinking that watching him the last couple of weeks wchs he's got his back against the wall and I wonder do you think that changes his willingness to take risks and be aggressive. It shouldn't and I don't think for most those guys that goes. I remember. This is a long time telling me when a long time ago when I used to. When I covered baseball I covered the Yankees and Brian? CASHMAN Ashman with the GM even way back. Then he's been. There was a season where he was in a contract. You and I remember talking to him and asking. Is this. Change Your perspective active right and he said look. I have a job like they're still paying me to do this job which is be GM. And so if I don't do that well and who's going to hire I think when when coaches when anyone finds himself in a difficult situation like that. That's a pretty good way to handle it coming up. We call black Monday because it's win. A lot of these coaches get fired on black Monday last year. Six coaches were. We're fired. Do you think we could see a similar bloodbath. This time Dan. You do start to run a little bit. Then right if Detroit's not gonNA make a move if the jets aren't GonNa make a move and let's say for the SAKE OF ARGUMENT CLEVELAND'S NOT GONNA make a move. And let's say the argument Dan Quinn going to save his job in Atlanta. It gets hard to get to six from there right like if you just like. Just there's these are just situations. Were watching right. Giants Jacksonville. Carolina and Washington are already the open. Yeah that's only four and I mean I don't think you're gonNA see too much more than that now. There's always a surprise but the other thing everybody says. Well there's always a surprise and one of my editors asked me yesterday. What do you think the surprise will be? That wouldn't be a surprise. But if we believe the jets and the Lions and if we think the browns aren't GonNa move on critic kitchens that could be a little bit of a lighter turnover year at head coach. What is it like for you when do you start hearing murmurs murmurs that? Someone is going to get like. Oh it's weeks out they you start hearing those murmurs Kinda like we've been talking about right. You kind of what the situations are the you need to keep track of from what I do if I didn't start calling sources on this until Saturday Sunday week. Seventeen Monday Monday after weeks. And then we'd call me back so I've got a no already and have groundwork laid like. Hey if you hear something on this situation can you keep me posted if if you've done it right and you've done the advance work. You can be in position to you know what's going on and maybe you know. Lucky Eagle. I break one. You told us what these days are like for you. What are they like for the people inside these organizations because obviously the shock waves go far beyond anyone coach? I mean you have to be. That's the other thing you check in with people you know on staff you know. Hey you're doing all right. I mean like the head coach gets fired. They don't announce that often wine course got fire. quarterbacks coach got fired at backs coach got fired but but in a lot of cases that may be someone you have a relationship with back. An instance. Where yes I mean? Sometimes those guys can give you information but you know in the business of making sure that you build sources trust you that today to kind of reach out and say hey. I'm not looking for anything I just want to make sure you're all right. I remember after coughing got fired. Pat Flaherty had been his offensive line coach. The whole twelve years and I talked to pat the following knowing your in San Francisco with chip Kelly said man. I had twelve years in one place got to raise my kids when they went. They went all the way through school in one place in my visit. That is was on her so he was really appreciative of fat. Most of the time it's opposite I think each time. They have to wonder whether they're going to get tests. They are in limbo a lot all the time because they're contract they're still running and they're waiting to see. The head. Coach is going into Monday. Many of these teams already have and as to who they want. A target for the coach's replacement on Monday Monday night you'll see reports of permission slips going in to only thirteen has requested permission to interview the offense coordinator of the of the Indianapolis Colts Defensive Coordinator in the San Francisco Forty niners etcetera so every owner. WHO's thinking about change? He even owners that aren't taking about changes most of them Keith. Piles of you know. Coaching prospects that they like terrific for when the day inevitably comes with a need it last year. The hot trend in hiring head coaches was Anyone who has ever had a conversation with Sean mcvay SOW I. You and I didn't get called. Do you think that's going to happen again this year. I mean you mentioned solid. It seems like actually. We're hearing some defensive names Dennis Allen the coordinator in New Orleans Ron Rivera who was fired. It is likely maybe that will see a different trend in two thousand twenty. It's possible you do hear a lot of defensive names but you know I feel like I read the same column every year on. Uh which is you should not be looking for. Do we want an offensive guy or a defense got. You should be looking for. Do we want a leader. You you know once upon a time the Baltimore Ravens hired the special teams coordinator from Philadelphia. Eagles John Harbach. He's still the coach and not only is still the coach but he's winning games in different ways than he ever wanted them before because he has the ability to run the building and and and he can establish the vision and be the leader eater and be the delegator that makes it all work. And I think that gets lost a lot of the time when people start talking about. Do we often do. We want a decent guy. Do we want a young guy do. Do we want a guy who's done it before you need to have somebody who has that leadership ability inside of them and when you hit on that that's when you have both Dan in all of your years covering the coaching carousel and black Monday. How has it changed? What is different now from say a decade ago? Nothing I mean like to same stuff right like north coordinators. Do we need to make a move because the fans are upset or we're just bored word with this guy or like he's offense. We need defense. These young and we need old. He's players coach. And we need a A tale kicker. You know like I. I don't know I it's I just I think teams are doing it the same way. It varies year to year in terms of physics but in terms of a process. No I think it's I don't think it's evolved. I think that's it's kind of a story that that's probably worth pursuing and writing is is the teams are still doing it the same way they did ten years ago and maybe longer. Wiseman the Freshman Basketball Player at Memphis who was suspended after the NC Double A.. Found he had received improper financial benefits from the man who would become his college coach. Penny Hardaway it's frankly right in. The wheelhouse is just frustrating. Because it's a rule that most people most fair minded people don't agree with. It's just an unusual situation relation to have a coach that coached a prospect when he was in high school ultimately becoming his college coach. That doesn't happen very often. So the circumstances are somewhat unique. Initially Memphis fought back but wiseman eventually decided to accept his twelve game suspension and he sat now for a few games well. Yesterday he made another decision and informed the world via instagram that he was planning to leave college altogether and prepare air for the two thousand twenty. NBA Draft James Weisman's should be in the NBA right now making millions of dollars and so then it comes down to making a proper business decision of what is the risk reward of coming back to Memphis at this time and for me. This is an indictment once again on the one and done rule that the NBA put in making this choice. Wise mid would seem to be a pioneer except except he's not alone he's actually part of a clear and massive trench. Just take a look at his class. According to ESPN's latest mock draft Wiseman administ- projected to go third overall. The number one pick lamelo ball is playing professionally in Australia. The number five pick RJ Hampton is playing professionally in New Zealand. And the number four. Pick Cole Anthony is a freshman in North Carolina but after he injured his knee. There's been speculation that he might right. Sit out the rest of the season to prepare for the draft and this is only the beginning at least until the NBA inevitably lowered the age limit for the draft. In in the meantime there's no way to predict how this will play out for Wiseman or Memphis for that matter. He probably would have grown his profile had stayed in school but now he can start making money honey and protect his body as best he can and while Memphis Shirley wishes he stuck around. They've won all seven games. He sat out even beating a ranked Tennessee see team. The only thing we can say with any certainty is that the biggest loser in all of this is the NC Double A.. which would no longer get to benefit from wiseman services services come March? They might have won the battle against him in Memphis but as time goes on. It's obvious they're losing the war times and this has been ESPN daily. One Conference to Rule Them All: Does the SEC Have Too Much Influence?

"College Football Playoff Selection Committee meeting and putting together this rankings ahead of championships Saturday and of course the final rankings. Come up on Sunday. Committee will be Altogether Watch Games valuation. Vote and come up with his final determination college. Football's make or break weekend. Five power our conference champions will be crowned in the final four spots in the College Football playoff. We'll be chosen today. Paul finebaum breaks astound. The Horse Race and tells us who doesn't belong I'M UNICOM'S IT's Friday. December sixth this is espn daily presented by indeed. Uh So we have talked a lot about Lsu as a show was network. And I wonder amid stat folks on for the sexy thing. Have we overlooked Georgia. In many ways we have In Georgia has been a fascinating team. The last couple of years Paul Finebaum mind bomb has been covering the SEC for decades and hosts the Paul Finebaum show on ESPN radio. The king with one play of winning the national championship and seventeen seventeen. They had a big lead against Alabama last year. And let it get away. He won't even touch text. Take the lead in the ball game. The problem with Georgia at least perceptively is their offense has been at times. They painful team to watch shows. They beat Notre Dame and a game early in the season we thought was going to dictate the playoff race and they struggled game they had struggled in other games as well. The kick is away towards the uprights and no good no good itself. Carolina has stunned Georgia in Athens. So I mean south. Carolina beat them in Athens and South Carolina ended up a four and eight team. I mean they. They got rolled by Clemson last week. Thirty eight three. This Georgia team though has one one primarily because of one thing and that's the defense they arguably the most punishing and suffocating defense in the country Paul earlier this season when we talk to Ryan McGee about the trend in the SEC of teams getting away from ground and pound old school offense why have torture in their head coach. Kirby smart not taking that approach Georgia's just older more traditional Kirby smart believes in grounding and out Georgia is notorious as a running back. You so many great players Michelle at the five into the end abso- touchdown Saudi Michelle girly. Go Twenty fifteen cuts early. Earlier I mentioned swift entree swift thirty nine yards to the house. And it's just it's just how they roll. Aw George as a defensive minded coach and he is stuck true to his beliefs. Where people like Nick Sabin after losing a couple of games in twenty thirteen eighteen decided to open it up he brought in Lane Kiffin and subsequently Steve Star Qizheng from SC and that has been the trend everywhere. But Georgia Georgia. George is still a very successful program. This is the third straight. Sec Championship game. They won the SEC. Two years ago even though they lost the national championship last year they came in Second Alabama and here they are back again but remember something about Georgia. Jacobson was the quarterback. He he was hurt art and then he lost his job to Jake From and Jake. Franz backup last year was justin fields. Who is now the starting quarterback back at Ohio state and a legitimate heisman candidate? So there you could argue that both eastern and field will be significantly better. NFL prospects. Do you think Georgia fans are seeing what justin fields is doing it. Ohio state and questioning. How or why coach Kirby smart let him get away? Yes now that now they probably are meaning because Jake frahm is had a fairly pedestrian junior season. But but I would agree with Kirby Smart Jake from was already a two year starter in Kirby just felt that from was the right choice. And it's hard to argue three straight. Sec Game appearances that very rarefied air and a league like the SEC. which is very cannibalistic? It will be interesting though If Georgia loses this game and is out of the playoffs and there's Justin feels leading Ohio state to go to a national championship. God is the Rio. Yeah well. LSU has their own quarterback connection to Ohio state but in their case their star quarterback and leading heisman candidate Joe Burrow he left Ohio state to come to. Lsu what has it been like watching him this year it has been like watching a Disney movie because it seems like a made up tale Joe. Borough was an elite quarterback back. He was recruited by all the big schools. That will house date. A lot of people thought he would beat out to Wayne. Haskins got hurt and Haskins pulled a little bit it ahead and borough finally realized after spring practice you know what as much as I love it here in Ohio he decided to leave and he ended up at LSU which was an unusual place for an Ohio kid to go and last year was good not great a serviceable might be a better word and this year. I'll never forget I was sitting on the set at SEC media media days and one of the questions from the hosts after two and jake from. WHO's the third best quarterback in you heard Kelly? Brian and fully Franks at Florida. And I just want onto be different. I should put about Joe Borough as the non Jock on the set. I was literally laughed off and that was for saying he was the third best quarterback in the SEC. How do you like it out as you? Well know you real out of panelists who are former players. Those those of us who didn't play are not taking nearly as seriously as those who did to put this thing in a hammer lock just before the half as you watched him play against Texas the second week and as you saw him a couple of weeks later continue to do the same thing literally breathless so Lsu is the clear favourite Georgia's got some injury questions. What what would it take for them to pull off the upset? It will take probably mistakes by LSU which have not seen this year they have been nearly a flawless all of us team. And what's scary about them. Is Dave Aranda who nearly left two years ago to work with Jimbo Fisher for about two and a half million. These are defensive coordinator here and they they found the money to keep him. LSU And he has been one of the best coordinators in the country has had a very pedestrian industry and defence this year until last week when they completely shut down Texas. A&M They've overcome a bad defense with the defense is now shown up and and that that to me is going to really negate jake from because he just doesn't have very many weapons. One of his key. Weapons happens is out of this game and other one is suspended for a half swift. His his great running back is banged up a little bit so it. It's it's hard to believe that the Georgia has enough firepower to be an Lsu team that has been one of the most Unexpected and insane offenses that we have seen in college college football history as we discussed. These are two programs with wildly wildly different styles if Georgia just gets beat down. Do you think it'll be the last gasp for traditional old school. Run I football in the SEC. It certainly will create A lot of pressure on Kirby Smart Georgia and Alabama Dama have been battling for the last three years but Georgia couldn't get Alabama. They had two chances with double digit leads. And they failed Doc. Lsu got them and there could be a paradigm shift right now but with LSU winning this game and perhaps winning the national championship suddenly. It looks like that's the school is worth remembering though they stole still recruit so well at Georgia and when the season began when Georgia was playing with a full complement when injuries had not overwhelmed them. There were there. Were people whispering. This was the year Georgia was going to get Alabama. It's amazing what fifteen weeks of college football will do to change perceptions coming up. Pope says the playoff selection committee has some explaining to do Dell's biggest cyber Monday. Small Business Technology advisor who can help you find just the right tech- that's eight seven seven by Dell or visit Dell Dot com slash SB cyber Monday. We're always speculating about whether or not to SEC. Teams will make it into the final four. If Georgia does pull it off. It would seem that that would be the outcome. I do you think both George and Elsie would be deserving. I do first of all. Let's let's say Georgia off the table. They were they were one the SEC with law. So I I don't think there's a big debate and an Lsu has beaten a lot of really good teams resume fantastic. They've gone to Alabama and and one that was a pretty EPOCA Event a beaten Florida. They beaten Auburn. They they have really been a consistent team and and I think unless you saw just a calamity of errors I think. LSU is about ninety five percent chance of getting in win or loss. I think folks would feel about that yet another year to sec see see teams. I think they would hate it. Yeah I spent a lot of time in New York and Connecticut And when I was up in Connecticut on Sunday morning after the Alabama loss I mean people were genuinely thrilled I mean there was a lot of shoddy Friday going on so I think it would discuss people full frankly because They're sick of the SEC. I think college football fans respect good teams. They feel like the. SEC spent a lot of time on this false bravado though. Oh that it's not as false as some critics. WanNa make it out to be if both Lsu in Georgia do make it in one of the teams that I think what have caused for some frustration would be Oklahoma which has made three of the first five college football playoffs. Do you think they'd have a case to be upset. No I don't I I think you have to look at your resume. You have to look at the teams you've beaten in. Oklahoma has a pretty good resume swimming. They beat Baylor It would not trump the the Georgia resume. And especially we've affected George would be the SEC champion Lsu having only one loss and that's the number four team in the country. I don't even think it's a fair comparison. Oklahoma was very fortunate to get in last year. They got in over Georgia. Which is fascinating that we could be having similar conversations here and they got him because they only lost one game in Georgia lost at Lsu? And that's why this if I could wish for this man is such a convoluted system. That thirteen people will sit in a room. Eating Caviar and beef Wellington and sipping on Don Perignon while they argue whether Utah Vanquishing Oregon is more impressive than Oklahoma beating. Baylor and now how they determine that I have no idea and I don't mean to go off on one of my pet peeves but this committee has no transparency at all in the past when we had the old pulse system as soon as the final poll was made we got to to see what their final ballot was whether it was Nick Sabin or chip Kelly or anyone else at this people will not tell us who the thirteen people voted for. Why do you think they? They don't want us to see. Because I think it would reveal that politics Enters into the fray and they they want to come out and say this is a collaborative effort. He's thirteen people are are not voting individuals they vote as a group and they have these thoughtful conversations. I just wish somebody would raise more Of A stink about this. Because I just think it's fair to tens of millions of college football fans not get a straight answer from the people who are determining the most important part of the season. Well help me understand something. Let's try to imagine we're in that room. We're not allowed to eat caviar. Probably but we can actually listen listen into the process. Oklahoma by most models is a better team than UTAH. But Utah's Sid net fits his place right now. Why do you think the committee likes them? Better Utah as of this moment is more impressive resume wise because they have one more top twenty five win they also have a loss. I jokingly said on television I jokingly said the country does not want Utah in the playoffs and naturally the twenty I five fans of Utah have been blowing me up on twitter which is fine. I listen I've never been to Utah and I know it's a beautiful state and I was at the Grand Canyon A and this year and they said if you keep going up a couple of miles you'll see whatever there is to see in Utah. I'm a listen. I'm not a a state hater. I just don't care about the University of Utah and I don't WanNa see them play Ohio State in the College Football playoff because they'll lose forty nine to ten a state. Hater is something that's been used against you in the past. I've never used that word before but I try to save something unique for you. Know the prestigious podcast like this especially my my maiden voyage on this podcast and sometimes times I'm a one and donor when it comes to things like this state ism I think is uh well you know Pau. I'm a Washington. Huskies Fan I and I think I learned firsthand. Why the statists are wrong because we saw what happened to my huskies when they made it into the College Football playoff a game in Atlanta and by the way my first year? Espn they put me on College Game Day as a as a way to get my feet wet in my favorite site was when we when we did the Washington I think. Washington Oregon game or Washington Stanford Game. It was a big. I think it was Oregon. Was really big game. Although from the being from the South I didn't really understand why Oregon and Washington was a rivalry and and we have to get there like three hours early. It was foggy and cold and rainy and there were at least ten thousand students out there about three o'clock Pacific Time who had not gone to bed yet nor had they put down their bong. And you know for someone my age to to relive my college days by breathing the air of U. DUB was one of the great moments of my later life. It's Washington state. It's legal. I feel like I need okay. You're talking about yeah. I felt I felt like I was stealing just breathing in all the marijuana smoke but by six. Am Pacific Pacific. Time I. I was buzzing like I was at a grateful dead concert in the eighties. To bring it back to football you know ended up very high in the rankings as well and then when they got smackdown right and I think when we talk about some of these teams the Utah's Oklahoma's do feel like looking at them now in assessing them you know it's really not the same playing field no I don't listen. I'm accused of all kinds of things but I am an elitist when it comes to College football because I've seen it before I'm against anyone getting in I against bad games. Arguing doing about Utah in Oklahoma is like flexing the Minnesota Jacksonville game to Sunday night on NBC because one team is in a playoff consideration. It's not an interesting game. It's still compelling neither team's GonNa win the Super Bowl but it's the best you can do on that night. I should point out that we we have been talking for a while now about the college football playoffs the teams at the top and we have yet to mention Clemson. Now their coach Dabo Sweeney would not be very happy with us. Right now would be distraught. He would he would throw a temper tantrum. How do you feel about their chances? Listen Clemson an has to beat Virginia. We're not talking about basketball. We're talking about football in. The University of Virginia has no tradition in football i. It's a wonderful school. I wish wish I had been smart enough to to get in there. I would have gone in two seconds if Clemson cares about this game the window. Four or five touchdowns now if they don't win then the argument for Clemson to be in is absurd. They can't help their schedule but they can help the schedule by winning the games that are on it and this one is the last one Paul. We talked about sort of the lack of transparency. And there's always these lingering questions how would you fix it. Well first of all I'd like to see what goes on during the meetings which I'm not saying we have to have a live camera but what's wrong with -lating someone in there for at least a brief period of time to to get a sample of that and my biggest pet peeve is is is is so obvious transparency. I want to know how that vote came to be I wanted to know who who each one of those thirteen people voted for and in order and Then it's okay if the if the chairman wants to come out and speak for the group but I would like to know how that group voted. It's the nine justices of the Supreme Court can put their name on the most important rulings in the land. Why can't can't thirteen people say I decided Oklahoma was better than Utah. I mean is that. Is that really a big deal. If they don't want to put their name name bite at the end of the year then they should not serve. Well now I'm imagining them. Eating caviar and wearing judge's robes more like Togo's from ancient wrong. Aw that's quite a visual. You've given US Paul. Thank you so much next time. Let's do this outside Husky Stadium.
