And coming off the pandemic and just seeing the way that kids mental health was affected, given that here we are, you know, still more than three years in and COVID hasn't gone away. What are the right things for us to be focused on and keeping an eye on to make sure that we can actually undo some of the damage done over the last few years? Absolutely. Well, first, thanks for having me on. And I feel like I always want to stress that youth mental health issues were a public health problem even before COVID. And I think it's important for us to know that because the pandemic really shown a spotlight on these mental health issues and certainly they have been made worse during the pandemic. So I think this is a wake-up call for us to really think about how can we build in more support for young people throughout their development so that we can really help promote wellness. And schools are one important place to do that. So states are starting to pass new policies to better support young people's mental health and this includes being able to include mental health days where students can be absent from school for a few days without penalty for mental health reasons. Funds to cover psychologists and other mental health professionals on site in schools and also training teachers, how to recognize trauma and how to respond in an effective way when they see youth trauma in the classroom. So I do wonder, though, as you talk about this, schools are struggling just to make sure kids have all the necessary equipment that they need. Not all schools are created equal. And I feel like we continue to load so much on schools to take care of a lot when it comes to our younger generation. Doesn't that worry you a little bit about the inequities as a result and kids who maybe need some help when it comes to mental health in lower economic areas and that they might not get that. So you're making such great points. So first, I really want to underscore what you said about inequities. The pandemic really worsened preexisting inequities. And so what we've seen is that children growing up in low income communities under resourced communities were hit particularly hard by the pandemic and tend to experience more sort of trauma and stress. And this is especially true for black and Native American communities, so I think we need to make sure that we are funneling resources toward young people who need them most. And then, you know, the point about schools, schools do have a lot of there's a lot to take care of, right? And they need to really make sure that students academics are supported and all of those things, but schools are where our young people spend most of their time. And so I think it's really key that we build these mental health and emotional supports into the way that we educate young people. In this can be done without sacrificing academic rigor or education. So there are many sort of prevention programs and mental health promotion programs restorative justice programs that can really be embedded within schools to create a more supportive culture. And what we know from research is that school connectedness and feeling like you belong at school and you know you're supported and valued, that is actually a really strong protective factor for young people's mental health. I totally agree, right? The payoff you think about it, right, Tim? Yeah. Thank you sure that. Yeah, doctor Tamar mendelsohn really appreciate you taking the time and joining us this afternoon. Doctor mendelsohn is director of the center for adolescent health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg school of public health joining us this afternoon from Baltimore. Doctor mendelssohn, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg school of public health I should note, it is supported by Michael Bloomberg, the founder of Bloomberg LP, and Bloomberg philanthropies. To play video games, a lot as a kid. You know what's funny? I actually watched, I was never good at video games. I was talking to a colleague about this today who plays games. I like to watch my friends play games, which is kind of funny because tournaments where people nowadays there is, like, Twitch is huge, eSports leagues are huge. Right. So Carol, I was on to something. What was the game? I was watching. GoldenEye. Ari knows what I'm talking about. I'm like a Pong. Yeah. Go back. It's scary. All right, let's get back to world of national news

"Women And I'm sure Cheryl Sandberg herself is probably probably saying where are all the women She has built a huge team below her that do include a lot of women but you're right Fiji simo left Carolyn Everson left I'd point to people like Nicola mendelsohn who's now running the ads business who I know you've spoken with on a number of occasion Monica bickert in policy Lori goler who's been the head of HR for a very very long time There are very very strong long tenured women at meta but in those key roles that we're talking about who are becoming the new faces of the company you're right They're all men You know Emily you've written about this and you've looked at what's gone on in Silicon Valley I mean how tough is it for very senior women Especially in a company like Facebook meta It's tough I mean just look at the numbers And in Silicon Valley I think more difficult than perhaps other parts of corporate America where there has been this over emphasis on needing a computer science degree And yes there aren't enough women and girls studying computer science but yes they're not getting opportunities And yes you can't lean in if the door is nailed shut And so you know I think her departure from Facebook at this time at a moment when women were very concerned about women backsliding in the pandemic Or perhaps coming out of the pandemic weaker than where they started it I think is a big concern And she said in her in her conversation with me look you know that this is an inflection point for women And she wants to use this opportunity to double down on her advocacy there Really appreciate it Emily Chang of course joining us after just jumping off the phone with Sheryl Sandberg herself Take a listen earlier to what she had to say The decision I didn't come to lightly.

"Help the IRS enforce the tax law I've really been disappointed in parts of the business community They're right to be focused on what's important and their right to have concerns about a variety of the trends right now But this idea that we can't have any corporate tax increase is dangerous and misguided Larry the fed was in the news this week for somewhat different reason on Thursday They came up with a new set of rules restricting trading coming off of some of the incidents that we know so well with some of the regional fed presidents What do you make of this entire situation with respect to the fed and how it is administering its rules about trading securities Look I'm not I'm not in a position to judge any individual but here's what actually troubles me It's pretty clear that whatever was done by the regional presidents was legal under the rules that the fed had set And that should be a subject for some real soul searching At the fed is to how that could have been the case You know it's scary for public officials to think they have to be their own ethics officers We should have ethics officers who write reasonable ethics rules And if you comply with the ethics rules then you've been ethical And the fed had ethics rules that were much too lax Prior to this and I think it has to ask how that happened And do some pretty systematic review of its ethics rules across the board One more quick one Larry a big piece of news this week was this a new Bitcoin futures ETF started trading and went to the moon and now we have some more coming online What do you make of what's going on here And I guess more specifically is this just a new bright and shiny object Or is there something related to potentially back into inflation here is Bitcoin potentially or cryptocurrency of potential hedge against inflation Look I think what you saw this week was Bitcoin has had some emergence as digital gold The thing you want to hold if you're worried about inflation And it also became easier to hold because of these ETFs And so when there's more motive to hedge against inflation and it's easier to hedge against inflation you're likely to see that asset go up Okay thank you When we want to understand what happened this week we always turn to you Larry summers are a very special contributor at Wall Street week Thanks a lot Larry Finally one more thought Going down the rabbit tar hole In a week full of earnings and crypto and more trouble in Chinese real estate you might be forgiven if you missed or at least didn't pay much attention to the exploration of a whole new universe or more accurately metaverse That reportedly is a place where we can all go and hang out and do business and pretty much live our lives or at least our avatars can live their lives Facebook's Nicola mendelsohn told us about her company's initiative that we'll start with massive hiring right here in our current universe in a little corner called Europe These 10,000 highly steel jobs are really for us going to put Europeans at the heart of our plans for the company future which you say is all about the matters And we're excited about the metaverse which we see as being the next computing platform It's not just Facebook that wants to explore this metaverse and it isn't all way in the future In Las Vegas they are having a music festival this very weekend It's called the electric daisy carnival And if you can't make it there physically well not to worry You can join it in the metaverse version Not to be outdone Playboy has announced its own metaverse built around avatars that you might guess it are rabbits or what they called avatars Not everyone in the current social media world has entirely bought into this metaverse thing When someone tweeted that the term metaverse after all came from a science fiction novel it was about a dystopian world created by nasty corporations who oppressed end users They tweeted could that author be right And Jack Dorsey of Twitter well he tweeted simply he was And I'm not sure how Elizabeth Warren would go about regulating this new metaverse But if you thought this might just be a passing fad that you might be able to ignore it You better think again Particularly if you have a brand to promote or to protect according to Anne hand of Super League gaming Any brand out there if you don't have a metaverse play happening you need to think about it That does it for this episode of Wall Street week I'm David Westin This is Bloomberg see you next.

"Well i'm gonna get started with the man who loved children by christina's deed. It took me about a week to really figure out if i even liked this book but it gives me it. Stop right there so this is coming from the woman who raids one age before you decide whether or not to put a book down. Yes this book had me in. And i read it but it wouldn't let me just so it was very strange and it was very original so it's about a family where the father he tries to prevent his children but it ends up damaging them. He's very narcissistic. He has a big huge ego and it just mothers out the children and they have to give him the attention and the mother's no better. She openly sheriff's her resentment toward them. It's a very dark story but it's very accurate. It's a it's a new new classic. I had to really think about this one for about a week. Because it wasn't that i hated the story at first because i was like wanting to find out what was going to happen. What was going to go on. And so i ended up just reading the whole thing and it took me about a week but it's really a good book so we turn you on to this book just a subject of narcissism. Just getting you were trying to report out your friend carmen. No no no no no no but just to get more information on it. It was a good book. Okay i don't know i mean would you. Would you recommend it to someone like me to read. Probably not but if someone is dealing with like a bad father a bad mother. They needed some insight. I might recommend it. I think it's a hidden gem though if you're interested in just kind of a dark tragic new classic this novel right. It's not true okay. Bright novel well. My first book is going to be a little more uplifting going to be more uplifting than that mind. First book is called that same flower. Floria amelia's letter to saint augustine and that is written by jostein gaarder translated by an born now. Justin garner is one of my all time favorite authors and i have tried to buy each and every tidal by him that i say whether or not i already have it so you can give it away right. That's right yes this. This one is such a hidden gem though you can hardly ever find it but this book is based on real paypal and true events so saint augustine before he became saint. Augustine had a son with a woman named flora and they lived together for many years before he embraced. This life of abstinence He just hey. Issued all forms of indulgence and the book is an imagined letter. From from floria to dane. And she's chiding him as well as the church on their. They're kind of puritanical. View of women in pleasure and take things that she says to be. God-given women and pleasure and it it's just. It is so beautifully written. It is so it's just such a beautiful Letter talks about making a son together. And how could he leave her. And what does the church have you know that she doesn't have an. I was kind of surprised that good raise only had Well they have less than three hundred reviews. Oh well maybe they'll get a couple more after this. But i i think i may add is to my to beat because this is that sounds interesting. I definitely think you should my next election is i was amelia earhart by jane mendelsohn and it also has less than three hundred reviews on good raids now. This book really should be read his poetry and not seen as a novel because the flow of the text and the visuals The present moment just all paramount. it's almost lyrical. And i felt like this book is less about the characters and more about their essence and who they are as they come from here on their way to their now. This is interesting it is. It's just so beautiful and it's a small book and this is a book that i actually have about four of and i will only give this book because a lot of people read it and they hate it and i can't have that you know because he's it to people who appreciate it if you don't love it please give it back to me so i pass it on to someone else. But it's i was. Amelia earhart by jane mendelsohn and it is just is just a beautiful beautiful book will my next election is the slaves of solitude by patrick hamilton. It was just so much fun to read and it had a lot of humor to it. It's set in england in the middle of done World war two misery. Small town where she's renting a room at a boarding house. Run by mrs pain. And everything's in short supply. Tempers are on the edge. It's very sounds very bleak but think of it as more of an old british sitcom. It's it it's setting a bad time but it's a very fun to read with all the humor in it. Okay because sometimes you know things are so bad. All you can do is laugh. You know okay so so far. You're kind of badding. A thousand with the blake novel. Sorry i'm seeing now. What really speaks to you rachel. I know and it may not get much better about this. Sorry will my next pick is called green darkness bri on me very good. Either anya satan and okay. It's s. e. s. e. t. o. n. But i think it is pronounced satan. It was brought to me by my best friend deanne and it was one of her favourite books and the story when i read it. It was really unlike anything else i'd ever read. I didn't raid the outlander series. But i think it may have some things in common with that group of books but the fact that The character can travel from the sixteenth century to today and bringing aspects of good and evil and offer a satisfying conclusion I think satan probably has a really good book. That may be better worth your time. over outlander. Ooh i liked allender so again my pbr. Less is.
