What's New at the Weekend Box Office?

"Tell us about something that people can go see. Well, you know, again, it's a very slow weekend here. It's a very slow weekend because everybody was getting out of the way on the one hand of Doctor Strange. Two weekends ago. And coming up next weekend, of course, is Top Gun: Maverick. Top ten maverick comes out Memorial Day weekend. That's kicking off everyone is very excited for that. But I think folks were also scared of that movie. So it's another, it's another slow weekend at the box office. I went and saw this is just it's not going to be a movie you're going to want to see. I'm going to just warn you off of it right now. I don't want to get the dreaded failure to warn, but there's movie out now called men, it's a horror film. Starring Jesse Buckley as a woman who is grieving. They've lost a husband. But grieving is the wrong word. Her husband is killed himself. He was abusive and she was going to divorce him and he threatened to kill himself and then he went through with it. And the whole movie is essentially, I didn't hate it exactly, but I was vaguely exasperated about it because it is what it feels like is sitting through an argument on Twitter where people talk about in the kind of broadest Twitter terms like the problems with men. What's wrong with men? That's basically the subtitle of this movie. Men. What's wrong with them?

Fresh update on "memorial day" discussed on Clark Howard Show

"Many people don't go by when some are actually starts right around my birthday, June 20th. They consider Memorial Day to be the start of summer, Labor Day to be the end of summer. I've got a couple related topics to discuss travel and cooling your house this summer. So airfares have gone through the roof. And it's funny, I do morning segment in Los Angeles with Bill handel and KFI, and first thing he asked me the other day was so you never talk about any airfare deals anymore. Do you Clark? And that's the truth. Why am I talking about them? Because airfare deals are not deals right now. The fares have gone up by enormous amounts, and they've gone up because of all the pent up demand of the last two years with people who have not traveled through COVID, and I keep talking to people on planes who say, hey, this is the first time I've flown since the end of 19. Or early in 20, and they're kind of freaked out being back with people everywhere around them. But there's all that plus people who had the vouchers where flights were canceled or whatever. And they canceled their flights in the airlines gave them the vouchers that gave them very time to use them and people were rushing to use all those. So we've got this massive spike in demand, pretty much all at once. And then you add on top of it, the airlines got a huge number of pilots to quit early in 20 and in the summer of 20 to take early retirement, gave them these really sweet buyouts to go away and now the airlines are sitting way short a pilot, thousands upon thousands upon thousands of pilots short. We were already facing pilot shortages in the United States, but now really severe airlines are pretty much across the board having to cut back their flight schedules during the peak of the peak season. Because they don't have enough crews to fly these flights. So it is the perfect storm for your wallet. What do you do? Well, I have a number of strategies that I talk about regularly that now are essential. Number one, when you fly. With summertime,.

A Brief History on Israel's Day of Remembrance

"The day of remembrance, I always find very moving, even though I'm not Jewish. Tell us about it. It's really the only unique Israeli holiday. Israel Independence Day is celebrated by Jewish communities around the world, but no one really marks Memorial Day the way we remark Memorial Day. The entire country goes into mourning for 24 hours. A siren sounds at 8 o'clock at night and then the next morning at 11 o'clock, the entire country stands still, if you're on the highway cars go up to the side, people stand at attention. We all visit military cemeteries. I was in the military cemetery yesterday. It's deeply moving because we have all lost friends and relatives initial wars. Victims of terror, and we pay homage. We go into this deep morning in the extraordinary thing is that at 8 o'clock at night, the next night, we go immediately into ecstatic celebration of Israel's independence. We go through this one from radical morning to radical to ecstatic celebration, I don't know anything like it.

The Economic Consequences of Poor Policy Are About to Hit

"We've got a lot that's happening right now, and not a whole lot of it is good. I mean, from the threat of World War three to the threat of millions of people coming here illegally that we can't account for and of course we have to somehow find a way to manage to the now threat of recession. These are the economic consequences of poor policy. You think about poor policy, just even on the energy front. I mean, again, I keep saying this, but I got to remind you, aren't intelligence teams knew that Putin was capable of this. So if you're a smart person, is the right hand not talking to the left, and you're running these meetings. If you're the president or whoever is running these meetings for the president, because I told you yesterday, sometimes it's really questionable. He needs his cheat sheets just to take reporters questions. So whoever's running these meetings and coming up with strategies, wouldn't you think, well, we got the threat of Vladimir Putin, which means we're going to be taking a lot of energy off the global energy markets, where else can we go? What else should we do? Because we can't, we can't. Let's be honest with ourselves here. Deal with $9 at the gas pumps, which, by the way, we are going to be seeing come Memorial Day weekend. Watch for that. Because there's no other supply coming onto the market. So why wouldn't you have said, okay, maybe it's time to tone down the rhetoric on all the green energy stuff we can still go for that. We can still support it, but we need an immediate solution that can take place in the next several months so that we can ensure the American people are not smacked with tons of inflation.

Why Wasn't Someone Thinking About the Russia Ramifications?

"Some pain for the U.S. economy. One of my frustrations and articulated this yesterday and I just wanted to think about it some more in terms of how annoyed I am with the Biden administration over all of this, there could have been an effort to anticipate more of the problems on the energy front. In other words, our intelligence team knew that this was going to happen. So why wasn't someone thinking about the ramifications on the U.S. consumer and the U.S. economy? There's no reason the U.S. consumer should have to pay $9 at the gas pump, which believe me, we are heading to. If they don't find an additional oil supply someplace somewhere, we're going to be looking at $9 at the gas pumps vi Memorial Day weekend, certainly in some parts of the country. So that's my concern. What does that do to the U.S. economy? Well, California has the answer apparently Gavin Newsom coming out with new plan to just hands. For funny. Democrats are also talking about stimulus checks of $300 a month there in California. Somehow the answer for California is just to keep taxing more that makes money and then reallocate, redistribute that money by way of printing more. Which actually has the opposite effect of actually causing more inflation, but nobody seems to have ever taken a neck off, econ one O one class that works within the democratic establishment. That's the frustration here. So again, Intel knew, all right, this is going to be a problem. And that we would probably be seeing a lot of Russian energy come offline. So therefore, why didn't anybody seek out other sources of energy? You do

Scott Powell's 'Rediscovering America' Examines 11 National Holidays

"When you write about the national holidays, right? What is the most obscure one? Because we can all talk about we talk about Christmas 4th of July and I want to. But what how granular do you get? Well, there are 11 national holidays where actually people, if they work for government, they have the day off. I added one more holiday, a national observance holiday called constitution day, and that's on September 17th, which is the day in which the constitution was signed by all the participants or by all but a very few. As far as obscurity goes, people mix up Veterans Day and Memorial Day. They're distinctly different. I think Labor Day is kind of an odd holiday. No one really knows what it means except that it comes at the end of the summer and it used to be a time of barbecues and the last beach hurrah before going back to school and work my favorite holidays are Christmas and Easter. And you can understand why. I mean, they are actually the foundational holidays of our country. We might think that it's Thanksgiving. Well, Columbus discovered the country Columbus day and Thanksgiving. But in fact, it is really the biblical background and the Protestant reformation that came that really that really gave birth to the modern age, freedom and democracy where people have rights, God given unalienable rights where people have equal value. They're all equal before God, a priesthood of all believers. These were unknown concepts.

Dennis Prager: Rituals Are Dead in America

"And it's a big theme in the book is rituals have kept Jews alive for 3500 years. And America may not survive because it's rituals or dead. Oh. There's no more July 4th. No more memorial. You know you're speaking my language. No, but this is. In every segment. I'm going to refer to one of my books. In my book, if you can keep it, I talk about this issue, that that is exactly what's happened in the last 50 years since the 60s and I know you agree violently. We have dispensed more and more and more with these traditions and rituals. It is fatal to a culture fatal to a people. Just survive 3000 years, a 2000 of them outside of their own land. America may not survive 300 years inside its own land. And the ritual issue is a major reason. July 4th used to be a big day. Now it's hot dogs and barbecue. Memorial Day used to visit the grave sites of those who died protecting this country. Veterans Day likewise, Thanksgiving has become turkey day. That's if it's anything. If the left has its way, it will be genocide day.

"The NASA minute. With Kevin mason, Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer, much like Memorial Day is the unofficial beginning of summer. And this year I ask where did summer go? Of course we haven't really had summer for two years in a row, or really we had sort of a kind of a summer this summer, but of course when COVID started kicking back in back in July, things started slowing down again and everybody kind of hunkered back down. It wasn't as bad as it was last summer, but that's what made this summer even stranger. Though we had a lot of rain this summer. So we really didn't get to go out and do a lot of things and we weren't going anywhere and doing anything anyway. But it's kind of weird where I just look up and went, wow, where did these last three months go? Labor Day is here and it's time to get back to normal. It's kind of weird how some are just kind of ends, even though it really doesn't. Summer goes on for another what two weeks or something like that, but still, once Labor Day kicks in, the college football season started, the NFL's back in order and well, falls here, whether you like it or not. And this summer seemed to be a little bit stranger than last summer, at least it was to me. Maybe I'm wrong or maybe I just don't know what I'm doing these days.

The Founding and Crimes of The Children Of Thunder Cult

"On memorial day. Nineteen ninety nine. The helzer brothers attended a murder mystery. Dinner held at their local mormon temple that evening reportedly dressed in all black and thus stood out from the rest of suburban attendees. Most of whom were start shirts and press chino's. It was at that event that justin met don goodman a single mother mother in her mid twenties. Who had recently moved into town and was working a grocery store desperate to find a direction in her life. She decided to join the mormon church although she was said to be an outcast. Much like the helzer brothers will. Don began dating just shortly after the murder mystery dinner. She was reportedly fascinated by his cares. Medical brother taylor managed to convince her to join a self awareness. Seminar which consisted of spending a few days inside a windowless room while a facilitator aggressively badgered them to confront their inner demons which sounds like most university classes. I attended so not that crazy but no absolutely ridiculous After completing two of the seminars three levels don began receiving spiritual guidance from taylor. He had become completely unhinged by this point telling her that sometime in january two thousand it was his destiny to take over the mormon church by all means necessary. He also began calling himself. Don and his brother the children of thunder claiming that it was their mission to create a state of peace and joy for everyone.

So this elevators operated by a seventeen year old white girl named sarah page so they at the very least seen each other before because she's the only elevator operator in the elevator on the drexel building and he's clearly had to had to use that restroom at the top of that building before so soon after dick rowland enters the elevator a clerk at drexel's first floor clothing store ren burg's here's a woman scream from the elevator so that clark rushes out to see a black man running from the building and then he goes into the elevator area to find sarah page still in the elevator and what he described as a quote distraught state. So the clerk assumed. Sarah's been assaulted and he calls the police. The police arrived. They speak with sarah. There is no written statement on the record. it's never taken none as ever taken. The police began an investigation and the exact details of what actually happened in. The elevator are still unknown but most people believe that dick either trip wall. He was walking into the elevator and fell and grabbed sarah's arm to steady him saw or he stepped on her foot as he walked into the elevator and then grabbed her so she wouldn't fall over but there is basically physical contact and the it's likely she screamed because she was startled by it. I saw dick immediately ran knowing that the worst would be assumed about his actions and his intentions no matter how innocent the incident actually so dicko's to his mom's house in the greenwood district

"The Maison with Kevin Nation. I've never really thought of myself as an overly cautious person. I use caution when necessary, but it looks like post panoramic. I'm now in the overly cautious mode. I'm going to be that way for a long time during the holiday weekend. Nashville was on fire. Figuratively, not literally with more and more people attending. It was almost like covid-19, never existed. The amount of tourists in our Lower Broadway area. Over Memorial Day weekend, was on par with right where it was back in 2019 back before we were worried about covid-19. People want to play pretend or at least some people are playing pretend because they just want to pretend covid-19 never existed. They want to go back to the way things were. And while I understand the desire, I truly don't see it in my world. I can't pretend it didn't exist. I think about it every day and I'm surprised that others don't to maybe as I get older I'm finding out. I'm not as Reckless as I once felt I was I guess maturity finally hit. I guess. That's one way to look at things because a lot of people just want to play pretend paw.

"Is a uniquely american holiday while most countries have a day that honors awarded having such a day at the end of may is unique to the united states not surprisingly the roots of memorial day. Go back to the. Us civil war. It began with decorating the graves of fallen soldiers. This is certainly not an american practice. It's been done for hundreds of got thousands of years all over the world. The practice of grave decoration was being done in south even before the war had ended. Women would festoon headstones of fallen relatives and loved ones with flowers what organization for grave decoration that existed was mostly done at the local level town would organize a ceremony to honor their war. Dead and would be at different times of the year. After the civil war the tradition took hold in the north. Many historians believe that the practice of decorating soldier graves with flowers really took off after the assassination of abraham lincoln in the wake of the civil war with so many injured veterans organizations began to spring up all over the country. These veterans groups provided a focal point for memorial efforts for war dead just three years after the end of the war former union general. John logan was the head of the newly-formed grand army of the republic or the was a fraternal organization of union veterans of the civil war on may eighth eighteen sixty eight. He issued a declaration calling for the creation of a decoration day to be observed nationally an annually on may thirtieth the selection of may thirtieth simply had to do with the fact that by the end of may flower should be in bloom everywhere in the country. Decoration day caught on quickly in eighteen. Sixty eight there were. One hundred eighty-three celebrations in twenty seven states. And the next year there were three hundred thirty six. At this point. The day was still unofficial. It was mostly recognized by veterans groups in eighteen. Seventy one michigan became the first state to formally recognize decoration day as an official holiday and every northern state had followed suit over the next twenty years for the next several decades northern southern celebrations. Were separate affairs. Georgia had declared a confederate memorial day in eighteen seventy four and by nineteen nineteen. Ten southern states headed an official confederate memorial day which was celebrated on june fourth. The holiday began to change during the administration. Of woodrow wilson. Wilson was the first southerner elected president since the end of the civil war by his administration. The number of civil war veterans had dwindled and more importantly the number of us war dead had grown. After the spanish american war and of course world war one there was a movement to expand the scope of decoration day beyond just the fallen from the us civil war. Annual gatherings of civil war veterans were common occurrence in one thousand nine hundred eighteen. A blue gray reunion was held in washington dc for veterans from both the union and the confederacy. This reflected a decrease in the bad feelings which had existed since the end of the war and started a movement towards merging all of the national celebrations for fallen soldiers. With the conclusion of world war one the day began honoring all fall in american soldiers and this course increased even further after world.

"It's important ladies and gentlemen that we honor these people. They're not here for us to shake their hands. Thank them for their service to me is not enough to go to an unknown soldier's grave and put flowers on it. It's enough to know their names to remember their humanity to remember. They had families. Their families sacrificed a lot. We owe it to them. Let their deaths not be in vain. Let's come together as one united nation and remember these loss brothers and sisters who shed their blood for our freedom. I don't think that's too much to ask. That's going to be for today's episode. I look forward to seeing the next. Let's seeing everyone in the next episode but it chill brace piece of good. And I gave these names because it's more to me to just remembering that some of our American troops died in war wage. I think it's more important that we put a name to those soldiers. We remember that. These were real people, when they not have known them, would they have never met a maid. Never never met have never met him in our entire lives, but these young men sworn oath just like I did. And they went with their president, told him to go they followed the orders of the UCMJ. And it cost them their lives. People, we have certain freedoms in this country that you just don't see in any other country in the world. And this year, I think it is very important that we remember that these names were real people. Not just a soldier died in battle. These people were Sons, they were daughters. Brothers, they were sisters. They had siblings somewhere, mothers, and fathers their families. Suffered a great deal at their loss and don't think that that's suffering ended after a year or two. I guarantee you there's at least one day out of the Year, there is very hard for these families because One of their family members. And made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. And I think more than anything this year, it would be incredible. if we could not, Dishonored these brave men and women. Some of them, some of them not even drinking age. And I think it's extremely important that we do remember, not just that soldiers died in battle. But that those soldiers were real people, they were family members to somebody. They were loved by many people and they they didn't come home. And if nothing else, all the fighting and the bickering and the point fingers of jabbing at each other, that we see this country doing right now. We lost fifty, eight thousand, two hundred and twenty American soldiers. In Vietnam, we lost over 650,000 in the Civil War. this country has paid at very, very steep price, for what we have And I know I only listed a few so I will ask if you have anybody in your family or friend that lost their lives in bath, I look, I'm a veteran. Send me their names. What branch of service they were in where they were when they were fighting. And I promise you for the next year, every name that I receive, I will feature them on every podcast for the next year. I know today is Memorial Day. But I think one of the things that we've forgotten the most in this country, all too easily is the people that don't come home. It's real easy to forget what they did throw, easy to forget, who they were unless You were loved one of that family member. And I would love to give all of these guys, the credit they deserve and the honor they deserve. I think it's worth it.
