John Mellencamp Sits for National Anthem Before Colts-Eagles Game
"John mellencamp. He's still a thing apparently. He's 71 years old. And Mellon camp's music has been used by a lot of politicians over the years. He's one of these, what he's from Indiana, one of the heartland guys, sings about blue collar workers, but the guys are raging leftist, as a matter of fact, he once said that the problem with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton is they were not liberal enough. So anyway, mellencamp portrays himself as like, you know, I'm down with the people kind of a guy. Well, over the weekend, he was at the Indianapolis game. Was it Indianapolis and Philadelphia? Big football game, and he was spotted inside a luxury suite because we all know that regular Joe's just hang out in the luxury suites. And he was stuffing his face with popcorn and his butt was in the seat. During The Star-Spangled Banner. So we got a picture of it up on the website, someone snapped a photo. Sport says mellencamp is one of America's greatest frauds. And the reality is this guy is a radical, radical leftist. But really, I mean, this guy can't muster the courage to stand up for 90 seconds. And show a little bit of respect to the men and women who fight for our freedom, he can't do that. I mean, come on. No, I don't know. I don't know if it was orville redenbacher. I don't know what kind of popcorn it was, Kyle, I'm sorry. But probably some of that, I don't know. Organic unsalted popcorn. The stuff without the butter.

He described it as wanting to do something like tennessee williams on the stage. So you know he doesn't. He doesn't say challenge. I think that's i think on that continued. Think that will probably be in the next twelve to eighteen months house tonight. The mellencamp story continues a will 'cause he's in custody. Oh go as well because obviously Trade times music at the last count. I think that's the thing with a by aging. He's not one of those people got into his dotage unrest Wage fee sutton than now you tell you still fervently and genuinely does believe he's poised And he's still Unease won't into might song. "Course i want to ask about the daughters. I enjoyed reading about him. He seemed a little softer. Enjoy getting the same hearing. You interviewed both two of his daughters. Yeah is the teddy. Go on justice yes and there seem like always a nice relationship. The best thing is i both been said independent of each other whenever in the life that they would not sure or they wanted to advice so reassurance account so they would always pick it nothing Pretty well as apparent if you get if you get that. I'm of the one of my favorite bits in the bookcase Just a sixteenth birthday party and a catchy some she'd smuggled about the bay to garo Muslim friends at their east. Got the defense guilin in these by the highest Around the page. They're having to pay an he catches them and he counsels the policy. The upfront the next day. That big sixteenth. He he a cleaning the house and so because obviously he was quite rebelliousness. Use full against this fall of this big tax lawyers who It was very much like do as i say. It's not as if though none of them got hand New expected to work for what you got. I think this respect for him for that. And i think they feel that they were best to serve. Because of the difficult thing time every interview was the same way kind of like just immense respect. He worked me to the bone. I was miserable during the recording session. I was mid. I hated every second of it. And i will do it again. They're just devoted to chunk. They believe in this man. Which is i mean. that's what you want. I guess. I guess it's it's the nature of people that you you follow whether they be whether you love them described can scrub making the american. It was like going to vietnam so that the sense of this go warned about the night. Shift the that you follow. I didn't speak to anybody who he didn't respect to you. They might have disagreements with them. They might not like the way you went about certain things. But i also think thing that yester- member with another sometimes lost win win With tend to have these opinions at the end of the day. Jones name above the market and enable. It's his responsibility. And he's the guy that carries guy. He's the guy that roy songs he's the guy that has to go ahead and sell them and he's the guy who's career stanza full and what's and so i think that responsibly impressionable so as an impact. On the way you interact with other people's well. I love that he's been able to attach himself to to projects that we're you're scratching your head like you know he. He did the plays he worked with. Stephen king do he's doing musical. He wrote a screen play. And this guy. I mean he just goes like he sets his mind to something and just like oh. I'll write a screenplay. Does he just goes right in. It's one hundred. Just full hog right ohi direct it and and direct. Yeah yeah direct this. Yeah he's getting confident self confidence. I think that's not unilat- The will turn on and tell you that anybody they will say within the hardware is having not you know. Not because he's he is on east. he's a very very good painter. He's a very very good hawks. His t. e. genuine isn't the we all know. The you know. Bob dylan tried his hand at all ronnie wood's the The musician painters an he's very much a musician. Stone john being. John mellencamp speeds people. I spoke to the to the woman who exhibits in new york gallery in new york. He would have had a career as a planning to. He would have been noticed the paint irrespective of together the last exhibit in new york alongside robert ration hook. He would sit on that level. That is unique. In that respect you know the turns sounds so these things. I think that makes me nate. is and the fact that i don't think he's his brain is still Money still trying to do multiple things. He hasn't sat back. Put his feet up an entity. Sto tich playing the hits. He hasn't done a east constantly trying to stretch himself which is again upper retail story about his his first exhibit in new york. It was a co exhibit. I think with miles davis. Yeah yeah yeah. And it's funny as as the reader and you know what it entails when you're opening an art exhibit. You know if you've been to an opening that it's sort of you know cocktail party if he seemed surprised at what it turned out to be in the people who showed up and also the names. Obviously we're we're we're the draw but he seemed you know so disgusted and horrified at the idea of an art opening that he left early. He was very conscious that You know he's he's aware that being john mellencamp rockstar helped you get full of the doors. But he was very conscious that he wanted to. He wanted his painting to be too. He wants to be judged in the same way you know. He went back and took classes. He went back in were with with with paint isn't took tutorials and things like that. I think he felt left for opening the miles. Davis lung was build on some sister. And that doesn't happen. The norm you. I i'll exhibition. You don't get building since. I think he felt he was being mocked xerox star. And and he wanted to be judged moore's he felt enrich spits apis mistake system that early on and the later things that he did when he exhibited they were small. Things did things midwestern galleries in texas and things like that in the east of built. He's white backup to having a deal in a new york expense. Nothing is exact. Same thing going on the road until tori eat paid. choose before you went. Metal on medicines quaco. If you didn't exact same way you touch that like. He felt like he was actually this exhibit with robert rauschenberg. That's that was like his okay. You're legit like once he. What's he made that. That was his madison square. Mo- garden moment. I think it was a massive thing. I new york. He'd said it was a big thing by think. When you placed on that level you took you by one of the significant figures in american idol. I guess it's secret news first novel. And i said you're gonna do book reading with don delay or something like that you placed on that level a neil seen that level. It's a big thing you know. You can't imagine less he would. But nobody's gonna be in inroads paintings with jackson pollock for some about that. Her jones were stunned up to that. It does stunned up to that needed this. You can read. He can read critics in the new york times. I think he's respected for what he does snow as the why he's doing it. "He's almost one of those characters in a in a book. It like you say a novel that he he pushes you as you pushed the reader right to the edge but his personality you know. You're you're always wondering where he was going to go off next. And i think you mentioned kenny aronoff. I think i might have felt the most for him throughout the although obviously he did pretty well for himself. Afterwards i mean. He became a success on one of the finest drummers in the world. i mean there's no one like him really I suppose like jones. I would imagine he's he was difficult challenging to work for but like tesla is a set of the people that do i think they will all credit that he better than i might one chick who's been in pretty much since day. One will kennedy are often with a massive great drum kit. John didn't that's a wanted. Somebody could play simply spare drums so he started piece by piece to take away the bits the case until it was dan's the bare minimum and then he had implies style it was the badminton. A not became can interrupt signature style. So i think the kenny's you do feel sorry for kenya. Various the book. But you know. I think if what he did you know. He will credit john with. He owes a significant of his career to he off playing with john mellencamp no question probably for for most of them. You know what i would say just going through it but like probably with any band or in any sport. You know the growing pains by. He's hitting the personality john's personality. You you made very clear and throughout his throat is for life. You also said in the book that i think he learned with his first band there was a democracy. You mentioned his first lesson was we can't have a democracy. There's only one there's got to be one guy in charge. And that's that's going to be me right. I think him gentleman bruce springsteen a parallel careers. I think looking to get the name Quite and they're very similar respect. I think bruce is perceived probably more amiable than easy going. But there's there's only one person each On and it's not stevens thing is it's accepted so i think his frustration with the first one was it took ages to even organize a show because there was six seven people voting on that. I'm not. I don't think there's been one person in john's doing for thirty years and he hasn't done to budget let's go back to about And the drum sound. I love the story. Of jack and diane. How it you've just came about Just the whole story which we can touch on in a second but it was the bg's who helped great this sounds by bringing in the drums. They were in criteria studios in miami and Bg's are in the next radio and it's all big elite news that the the cheese producer. A think if memory says they working on that's the record to three four different versions of chuck on working on elderly just ryan with distrupt machine and said try. I didn't kenny. Aronoff insisted them programming. If he's going to be sidelines the drama she'd because he eat famously been removed from the record before that. You didn't play on before. That meets john band. So he program the drum machine and then Mick ronson david bowie. Fame was also shared management with them with mellencamp he to nominate was his idea for the hand flats and it. It's it's one of those ransoms as put together almost like little bits being added along the way when you listen to all san light they were they. Were not supposed to be there if you listen to at night. It's it's for the time it's it's. It's an extraordinarily way rebel. Does no chorus is also weighed things. Going on and as i said when the They just did not understand it. So didn't think meant twenty but there was one concession right. I mean there was a plot with to To jack and diane you touch on lyrically who jack and diane originally were originally. It was a mixed race and that is the point he was. I think jack was a a a black americans football player and that was the point he was making but it was a mixed race copeland. He was advised the model to avoid the particular tabu. If you want to call it. At that time he did remove removed from the lyric. An east comebacks. I mean if you know the checking a video was a mixed rice cripple dancing and not video goes into that. It's still an oldest timely. He's now Music jack and diane But i think they've reinstated that storyline. That's revived the original storyline. So originally he was sucking on a cigarette which makes sense instead of a chili dog. How did that happen or why. I don't understand. I never understood sucking on a chili dog. I it's all the same things. I think that he's not jones. Not put up and he knows which by ulster fight moran nothing. He was very much site. The compromise he.

"Say that. Why didn't i just say that without having to be reminded that something actually happened this week. We went to speed see annette. Sparks brothers movie not the sparks brothers movie. That's a whole different movie which was also awesome. Something we also saw that together. We've seen we've seen the whole sparks of why it less than a month. One dave food. Good with your friends too because this one had a french director. Thank you when you followed up on that. Very good. If you love sparks. It's worth looking into. That's all i'll say about that that we turn to the heartland and john mellencamp and book that's out by paul. Rees is legit. He was the editor of q magazine in the uk. In karang also wrote a couple of biographies on john whistle and rubber plants. We had a great time talking with this. Scott scott scotsman. This spine scotsman. Okay thank you holly. I don't wanna. I don't wanna offend the scots. Then sense that's correct. It's what what sounds right. Okay so why. Don't we just get right into our talk with paul reese. He is the author of mellencamp that is out. Now let's get into it on the what differences make podcast. Y'all say you ready to talk mellencamp okay wonderful. This book is called mellencamp simple. Is this an authorized biography. Tina booklets coal in the springsteen book that he did. I think i'm familiar with that one. It's kind it's really similar. In the he knew all he spent three extended the of interviewed members of his family of the both still is. He's broza premature everybody. Everybody that's in eastbound live and most people that apply to them x. manages unending he and his dad supplied Book so he's been Could be seen the manuscript etc etc excess not officially authorized but he's been very helpful. Management have been very helpful now. What is the difference. Because i know you've spoken to everybody you know. I guess with his blessing. What's the difference between an authorized biography. And what you're doing is i would say yours was authorized the split saddam's Shitty decides that it's exactly springsteen when he cooperate and help without the and then he won't stereo and so chill if us to john decide to his own book I think potentially might be easy to do. The if he's not all thrust before so he can put the word on on the cover he could put that particular word on the cover. Yeah all right. We'll after spending some time with with mellencamp and your book. I feel like he would never approve of anything that ever came out from anyone else except for for him. He's a he's a stubborn fellow at It seems like Likes likes to do things his way. Probably one of the reasons these last as long as he asked and one of the reasons is interesting. You know he walks debate draw. I think possibly because we all the things that happened to career as he's honest he made all the mistakes gonna make rice affront. His name chains me so is a mitch from an older accident. I think e at you ought to do things zone way. Determine determined White how much did you know about him. In advance of this. What dream to him. The offensive scarecrow. Way way in my use Just invented the whale god Old jack and diane that was mahood him and then scare problems for somebody. I really listen to and adopted offensive. Then been the same when he played over here but when i was in q. Random Tie all he was just finished with commoner And i've met him before he come up with cured so admit but then i got i got into in bloomington and spend a couple of days within an i didn't realize how interesting he walls and if you sit until two as like a character leeann character american fiction and i think that was the point realizing I met him he Victorian an he pulled up a free fulham blade in better than sublease which he pulled them. Busted the manos and just this is a guy it as black peace fiction and south so that that was kind of to tell the story. What were your impressions. First of all of bloomington and did you go to see more just to kind of get the atmosphere of where this guy grew up in small town livingston twice. I think bloomington's probably the the blooming in a small town. Indiana small and indiana said In bloomington and you just get rid of it is. It is a small town. He stayed he. Didn't lose. neil or light. You wanna ryan bloomington. Everybody knows who he is. You women in all in bloomington make tell you that scene in across the street you will bookshelf. Someone in the book shelves the story by john. Mellencamp doing mass jalen can meet the delo. Law Ole these Things the idea that i mean. He kind of embodies that small town american midwest america ethos ale too any differences indiana's very much shown a red state and he's the best for on the opposite from from right as you can be in political also was curious about the bible this that we live in los angeles so either has lived in a small town and it's fascinating the way you colored it so you talked a lot about where you wrote a lot about john's youth and how he was just kind of like a bad boy you know not so much into education and you know a lot about his family. Which is you know is great to have that that background but how he developed into such a such a like a thoughtful adult he must have had the bill the ability the song writing the writing ability it must have all been there for him to have turned into what he was at least the way you described his his sessions with the musicians about knowing exactly what he wants and understanding. The music That if you if you talk to him anybody he will be an emmy. does he. very much says it's all about all anybody do without that he. He would really hard now. He really did apply himself to the business of making himself. Good but i also think has to be said it has to be they in some way shape before. I think you have to be blessed in some ways shop for to be able to he. He told himself Longtime ago rick rubin. He was talking about working with tom. Patsy and he said gee could these. These people kind of plugged into something that you want a said you'd be having a conversation but some not it leads to be talking to you. He being gates conversation with him and he nigga easily start and stop playing utah and he would extend a pick something at three. Just the grasped will it was the songo'o ever at the and then he roy sung in ten minutes. I'm pete mellencamp took but then signed whatever he says he's trying themselves by. I think the some whether it's place still gift to the whatever is you're able to tap into that kind of thing you might be able to hone get better and beth writes it but i think it's probably the yeah. We touched on it a little bit like his upbringing. His parents had bongo parties. Can you explain what a bongo party. I'm still not entirely sure long. I think is actually. It is exactly what it says like bongos people would come running. And it's the between in music on and the bongos random Would play ball. Knows it's by. I've ever heard of the concept the bummed their politics But but that appears to be what it is like a drum circle so he was always around music. I mean growing up. There was music in the family you know. They went to proud in church. I don't know how much music was there. But i'm sure that you know that kind of has an impact and you kind of touched on like he had this thirst for to discover gover music. He spent all his money on on records. And things like that. And i think he's is half for. The result is operatives To hint he was the first one that started guitar. Eight didn't obsess i rotate to be gave johnson rudimentary lessons. Gift to top joe. Mullen capital the maintains that he's got the best voice in the family and has always been the But but he is. He's a bit. John was just targeted by a disappointingly nevertheless nearby in a way to escape from it and be something else that was the effects that nothing eat probably understood. Mariya was beta was. "Could be for me. I despise writing. Thank you cards. It's really anything because what ends up happening is when we don't want to do something we end up spending so much time thinking about not wanting to do that. Then we don't do it so if you make it your three non-negotiables and then what i do and i actually learned this from another blogger that i follow Like ashley emily. But i set a timer and i set a time for whatever it is and then i realized my non-negotiables aren't working out anymore. It's like you know paperwork stuff or you know whatever that is it really only takes me twenty minutes and then i can tell myself the next tag that to eleven minutes please you know did together in give yourself that kind of boost but so the three hundred to three things you were going to do in the check them off the list and then all of a sudden you start building that confidence yourself like. Hey you know what. I can do hard things. I can do the things that i say i'm going to do. And then he started building that confidence you have that belief system that's raised and then the goals are the things that you wanna do. Like your manifestations or they can be big or small. You don't have to over think it but you know it could be something like i wanna learn to dance or i want you know anything but just to see it over and over again. You don't have to force yourself to do it. You'll do it when you're ready but there are things that are you know weighing on your heart but if you write it down then it's there then you've taken that pressure off like i need to learn spanish or whatever it may be and it's just right there and it's an overall goal or it could even be a small goal like you know i drink. I drink you know three waters. I prefer to drink five. Whatever it may be but you can tailor it to you so often. I didn't write things down. Because i thought it needed to be perfect and look perfect and like if my handwriting didn't look nicer if i made a mistake that it couldn't i couldn't do it now. Just scribble it down. It's like it's nothing but like the belief. I haven't myself of completing the things i'm gonna say as it's hands down the best. I love the vodkas. I read that you said that. Essentially that was you proving to yourself. Your actions helped you like you. There was no failure there. Because you had evidence to stay off the day after day of completing those three and on the gospels which i guess kind of gave you that tool kit that emotional toolkit that maybe hadn't quite hadn't been as robust as you need it to be previously. Yeah and i think that people also think when you're changing your life you need to be at one hundred percent every single day like i wanna. I wanna start exercising. I'm going to run a marathon. Snow wake up and decide you know. Set your timing. I like to know my timeframe. So that i always get it done but if i wake up my body is tired and it's hurting our like i'm just feeling like i don't wanna go for a run even though maybe that was my plan. I could do a restorative yoga. I could go on a walk i could. Do you know whatever it may be. You don't have to do the exact plan but keep moving. Keep that habit going and then tell yourself figure out what it is that you like to do like. I used to dread working out. Because i don't love going to the gym and like lifting heavyweights. It's like i don't get. I don't feel better from it. It's like you know. I live lightweights but i do a lot of body resistance and learning classes that you like to go to what you in order to figure out what you like you to try things and so you gotta get out of your comfort zone and go try. I've tried every class in los angeles. Sure and i figured out my made things the things that make me. The happiest are going on hikes. Are you know jogging outside hot yoga. But like everybody's different. You gotta figure out you and you got to go through some discomfort on the way to figure out what that is. I think that's another thing that's come up time and time again on the cost and it's one of the things i really loved about having hof on the show when he was saying when he does the cold war to therapy talks about actually embracing that pain. That gets you to the good feeling. Like it's just persevering through that and i do think element of that wave everything at the the. You're talking about in terms of accountability. Change isn't easy. And i remember years ago at someone saying to me. There's a reason why. Caterpillars go into a christmas it so you can't hear the screams because change is hard. I'm sure you've expression not. I mean i think if change was easy everybody would be metamorphosing all over the place. It's just not. And i think you also have to break it down like what is it that you want to change the most like for me. I had to really break down. If i put it all in one big box like i wanna do. I wanna lose a eighty pounds. I wanna you know. Be a better wife. I wanna be able to laugh more. I want to be whatever those things and try to put it on. You have to just start with one. Like where's my first focus is. I need to feel better and then it was. I wanna start liking myself more and then it was. I wanna have more fun with my kids and then it was. You know and now it's turned into. I want to figure out ways to expand my bet. You know it just really you know. Oftentimes we keep ourselves in the small bubble. Because we think we've done this now we're done but no there's al- there's always different ways to pivot and find ways to continue that feeling where you can almost have that high of excitement of trying something new and pushing yourself out of that comfort zone. I think there's a big difference between being What it looks like to other people when someone is perhaps following a really strict regimen. And what you're talking about. My think sometimes don't know whether you've had this. I certainly have. If i say. I'm not gonna have that. I will suddenly get the back from people odbc joyless. I'll have a little bit of fun. And i actually believe. Living and being accountable means that you don't allow yourself to have fun. A yeah i mean it used to and this at the beginning of my journey little you know but i think that a big thing for me was learning that i could. I could make.

"Be in the show notes. But if you're looking for motivation regardless of why we're godless of what the goals are. I hope you find these insights helpful. So she is teddy mellencamp on the emigrant well. This is absolutely glorious. Because i am staring the very beautiful face of teddy melancholy arrow ave welcome to the cost. How are you. i'm great how are you. i'm. I'm fantastic. And i'm so pleased to be speaking to you because Listen i was just saying teddy before. We started recording. I figured as they we have quite a bit of symmetry in various things that we've gone through all lives whether it's anxiety weight management basically kind of the. I think the thing. I keep going back to is my life changing the better when i stopped looking for other people to blame and took accountability. Yeah when you stop looking for other people to blame or for other people to compare yourself to you. Because i've learned comparison kills all joy. And you know we focus on ourselves and then we can you know as long as we're growing in some capacity and pushing ourselves to learn more things and trying to things not going to be complacent and we're going to be feeling better ultimately so not to put too much pressure on you. I i feel but what you've been able to do is on tangle some really negative ways of thinking negative patterns. Not only so that you can help yourself but actually what you've done is say. Listen i know this works. I wanna share it with as many people as open to as possible so i wondered if you could talk me through that story. Where again for it started. You know. i'd always ridden horses. And i was a competitive professional and it was like i only knew happiness if i was winning. A good day was a blue ribbon. A bad day. Was i made a mistake or the horse made a mistake and i would punish myself for it and i kinda got on. This vicious cycle is like i became obsessed with the win but not obsessed with the things that i was doing jim improve or any of those types of things cut to meet. My husband We you know we start getting serious. We start trying to get pregnant and You know i struggled with infertility. So that was a whole 'nother level of pressure i put on myself like why can't get pregnant. I'm having miscarriages. I'm going through. Ivf here we go and in that process it was a really hard process because it wasn't like you know my old bad habits of this is a win and lose this life for talking about and now here i am in this this really hard spot in lino blessed ended up having kids and after my son and after a couple of miscarriages i wasn't writing. I had my two little kids. And i really became a misery loves company person. You know like. I could put on a brave face and go out there and have fun with my kids during the day but at night i honestly just turned to feeling really alone. I wasn't vulnerable. I wasn't sharing with my husband. How i was feeling and it was really putting a strain on our relationship because he's not a mind reader and if you pretend everything's okay people believe everything's okay so it wasn't just like my mental state was struggling because i was not taking care of myself not feeling good looking to other people to you know. Make me feel good. And i didn't have any tools to do it myself. It really was a vicious cycle and had gotten to the point. Where i was like. I don't know if my marriage is gonna make it. It got to the point where i would crop myself out of every picture that i was on with my kids. It got to the point. Where like i didn't even feel good enough in my own skin to run around and you know be as present as i wanted to be as a mom and that's not who i am and that's how i had kids and you know all of these things were struggling and i had been one of the. I had kept complaining to my friends about lying. You know this is happening. This is havoc. And you know they. They they help you feed into that and then finally one day without talking to anybody. I started an instagram account. It wasn't the best name at the beginning. It was l. A. workout junkie. But i i started. And i just said hi tech mellencamp bari ave and i'm changing my life today. Follow along if you're interested and i blog and wrote on my instagram for three hundred sixty five days and it was about workouts. It was about what i was eating. It was all of these things. And yes i lost over eighty pounds so people saw the physical transformation but what people really saw was the mental transformation and started seeing glow that excitement that purpose all of those things come to life and you know i the thing that i realized that i had missing my entire life was accountability. Like i just never took accountability for my actions and i started not believing in myself and not started not believing the promises i would keep to myself because i always end up changing my mind all start next monday. I'll do this next week or whatever it may be and so in that you started building following because people either want to see fail or they want to succeed so i start getting a following people start reaching out to me i started getting press about it and then people start saying i want you to do this for me. I want you to hold me accountable. Because i don't want to put it on. Social media like your. That's wild that you wanna do that. But that was the only way. I knew how i need social media to like. I'm gonna right right now. Like i'm going out for a walk in thirty better be. Dm's if i'm not out there you know like that's what i needed and then i realized wow when people started reaching out. This is incredible. I can do this for other people. And then that gave me a whole nother boost of like okay now. Not only just doing this for me. I'm doing this to help. Other people change their life. Or if you're going to postpartum and you feel really alone you're not alone or whatever it may be and then the business started growing and growing and then tv show and then it explodes and everybody wanted me to kind of sell out and say you know. Just start hiring everyone. You can do that. You know go to the masses and higher every personal trainer. You can in every nutrition at absolutely not. I am only going to hire people from within. So if you've gone through the program and it has changed your life and you practice what you preach. Those are the people that i believe in that. I know that if. I am in a place where i am struggling. I wanted to know the person. I'm talking to has felt that same way. And that's i mean how we've gone to changing over twenty thousand lives. It's honestly. I am so grateful to the community because it's kept me. I mean i'm now over seven years and to into doing this and it doesn't mean that i don't have bad days it doesn't mean that i still don't mentally struggle. I have anxiety. Ocd insomnia have all the things. But at least now. I have the tools and community and i've learned to be vulnerable and take action so that's is you can tell i'm just so passionate about it but i truly believe in it and that's that's really what my business is all about and what my where my hardest And i it as you say it's completely evident and i think just going back on a couple of the things that you said so much about. I can relate to and one of the things is i was a real moaner. I go and see my friends. And i would say we'd be go for branch all icon eat that because i have problems and metabolize carbohydrates but that really wasn't the truth of the matter the truth is that generally. I was consuming too much. But i was trying to show i was. I was always presenting excuses. And i i would agree with this. There's a sort of a sugar high for want of a better expression of living behind an excuse but actually it's it's quite painful place to be where you're constantly living in that bubble. It's not my fault. it's because of this. Actually that place is a place of denial and we know what it is that we're doing you know we. You know there was a time. And you know. We're i truthfully eight every single one of my feelings you like any time. I had no idea how to process any emotions and something that i have to repeat myself over and over and over again is what am i refusing to feel right now because i'm one of those people that i don't i don't like to feel angry. I don't like to feel i mean. It sounds crazy. Because i i used to be on a reality. Show arguing with my. But i don't love confrontation you know like i in my day to day life. That is not who. I am at eats me up inside. So sometimes i put on this perfectionism peace and don't allow myself to feel so when you're doing matt and then you're also kind of punishing yourself. It's a very vicious cycle of just not even knowing who you are and and then expecting others to know who you are and to complete you which is not going to help it. It's that constant search. Isn't it for external validation for someone to say your okay uric. Katie i see you. You're you're fine. I mean my therapist.

"Hey welcome to the show. Teddy mellencamp joins me in this episode. And i invited her on the focus because we have both had lightbulb moments. That have let us down a sort of fairly similar path natural fact longtime listener and followers on instagram. Amazon's will know that a couple of years ago. I became so sick and tired for want of a better word of being sick and tired of being overweight and feeling sick and unhealthy that instead of going on a diet with some extreme fitness regime which was my previous goto. I actually did something much harder. And that was to be honest with myself about how i was contributing to the problem so i spent many many years blaming my hormones. We stress my jeans. My second stance is my salary. You name it everything and all of that protected me from having to face a much harder truth. It was my fault now. I say fault but that fought was binge eating issue so let's just be clear that's mental health illness or want and lack of willpower but realizing this understanding what i was dealing with and being accountable allowed me to make the lifestyle changes that have meant. I'm no longer working against myself. I'm working for myself. I had goals trust me. I wanted to lose weight and feel good but previously. Whether i realized it or not i was tearing myself away from them rather than towards them. And when i had teddy story i felt that was asymmetry and that we had both on our own steam come to a similar conclusion. Ted janney began when frustrated by her yoyoing weight and not feeling healthy. She started an instagram. Feed with a post. That said i'm changing my life today. Follow along to see if i can do it. And she succeeded. She really succeed. It's been seven years since that post and being accountable to herself and her followers and she's say her life has changed for the better because of it and so the reason. I wanted to share a conversation with teddy on the show that the majority of questions i received by email are about how to get motivated and stay motivated. People who follow me on instagram. Ask how. I motivate myself to work out every day. Or how do i stay focused on my goals or asked. How do i begin. Where do i even start. If i want to get fitter in inverted commas. I have set myself a goal. But i have no idea how to get. There is another one. What do i need to do. Or there'll be messages about how many times people have set goals and not reach them and how they are now for straight with themselves and feeling less motivated than ever now he just wanted to make it clear. This isn't about weight. Also working out and in fact teddy mentioned this in the show that while the most obvious change when you stop being accountable to yourself is the physical one particularly weight loss. A goal it's the thing that people begin to notice the increase in confidence the glow the more positive outlook which is much more to do with trusting yourself believing in yourself and what you're able to do than the physical weight loss that might be in many ways a byproduct of the action that you're taking to support yourself so in this conversation. I asked haiti to share her story. And how that one. Social media posts changed everything during oklahoma station. teddy shares. Why comparison kills with joy and how to avoid it white so easy to get caught in a vicious cycle when you're actively working against yourself without even realizing it. The trap of misery loves company. Why it's so unhelpful. To look for external validation and why it's vital to develop that skill within yourself why the physical transformation is nothing compared to the mental and emotional one when you start taking accountability. Why self sabotaging behavior is trying to stop me from feeling something you should be feeling perhaps the value in opening the lines of communication with your inner circle so you feel seen and heard why it's a myth that motivated people wake up motivated every day. Why the best investment you can make is in your cell snapping yourself out of feeling like a victim and why progress is really honestly just about putting one foot in front of the other because forward is a pace all the links italian everything we discuss will be in the show notes. But if you're looking for motivation regardless of why we're godless of what the goals are. I hope you find these insights helpful. So she is teddy mellencamp on the.

What up everybody. Welcome back to couple of things. John and andrew podcast all about couple things they go through today we have teddy mellencamp campaign her husband edwin roy. Avai- i love this conversation because it started out talking about how they met which was during a one night stand. That's right a one night. Stand turned into a marriage and babies kids. Yeah they're killing it. I actually one of my favorite things about this. Conversation is how transparent they were about their dating relationship. They said they went through all of the ups and downs in their relationship talking about all the hard conversations and really like going through the marriage stuff before they got there so by the time they got married. They felt like they really knew each other which i loved job. They were pretty thoughtful. I enjoyed our conversation and to give you background on. Teddy and edwin. Teddy mellencamp is the daughter of musician. John mellencamp classic rock jammer. Yes office stuff. But she grew up in indiana. We bonded over that. And this you move out to los angeles when she was seventeen to pursue a career in acting one thing led to another seeing being on the tv. show the real housewives of beverly hills and And then that ended and she's now created her own health and fitness program called all in with teddy mellencamp. She talks about that. She talks about a journey and then also where edwin falls into that And also addresses some criticisms that all in has has garnered and her thoughts on that and what her responses and then edwin is the founder and ceo of a company called skyline security which is amazing. Company has very rapidly growing and Both of them have fantastic careers. Yeah we talk a lot about how they have figured out their work life balance how they figured out. I'm raising a family within the spotlight. It was a really good conversation. And we will link information on both of them Down below you can check out their social handles. "Change the format and do something new. And so maybe you know that happens with with katie. And how what happens. Who knows but it sounds like maybe we might prepare for non traditional ending so to that point. Maybe there isn't your like your set top four. You know maybe in again we. We don't have a hometowns. They're not necessarily there'll be a quote unquote town episode. But also maybe there won't be maybe you add elements of like still in a covid world so whatever families do show up are going to have to quarantine. It's more of a process. So maybe as they get to that point the season and the whoa what katy ceiling depending on what goes down. Maybe things have escalated with two guys are just like you guys. I mean come on. Let's be honest. we're just going to focus on these two or two three love stories and maybe they only bring two or three families in all these are possibilities to and and could have certainly play a role and if they get so. The fact that ended early would tell me why. You're we're going to get a lot of to be continued 's a lot of episodes it will not end in rose ceremony. So just buckle your seatbelt and get ready for that because that means they're so much that's a good thing for anyone who's gonna complain about that that means so much is happening on every episode that they didn't necessarily need or expect but it's too good not to air it so they are going to share it they're gonna show it and the let's let it bleed into the next episode and when things get to the end of the season they will just kind of get back on track or just totally readjust in the format might be completely different than what we're used to. I think it's going to be a good season either way. I don't know if she's going to truly you know. Have the neal lane ring at the end. But i do think there's going to be a lot of drama. It's gonna be fun. It's a good group. I excited yeah. I again i. I got a couple of the guys. I think From what i could tell katie was someone who was willing to embrace the role and and be her most authentic genuine self And just kind of be honest with the man and america and that will make a for for good tv. and i'm excited as well And we don't even have a dispute to end with because we're agreeing on the winner dispute. Last time. i was a touch of a dispute. You didn't actually fully agree. We agree i. I feel so much better walking out. What if what wrong. There's no way we're neck. It's not get crazy. I don't think you're wrong. Or maybe maybe greg maybe jazz makes a comeback in the rv peels.

If you see the words coming out of their mouth then they probably set it but other than that. It's the super t's okay so it he. Tvd we've seen people getting punched in the face and super teases we've seen we've seen people show up that we never see like Who who knows right. So yeah i. I don't know if we can take too much Any other people we we need to to cover I mean like brand brand done. Who went home auto parts manager. I just. I really wanted to find out that he worked at a what else. What's a hot topic. But when i want him to be a hot topic manager and not an auto parts majer but it was a look at the us this part for the right gal. He's got james for more than seconds. I saw him six seconds up. How many guys with thirty guys are always going to be five or six guys. No idea who is that guy. And then the guy with the one earing that was across like sky crystals. He was showing her like he was like. Oh the rock guy sky. He was manifesting. The whole episode manifested himself to go home. It didn't work also like what about john. The bartender She liked him. He was seem sweet. No i thought he great vibes entrance. He had sweet entrance. But i didn't feel the chemistry between them. I i also need to. It's hard for me. When i look at the ages and some of the people i personally am not gonna marry a twenty five year old guy like you iowa halls katie thirty i i would want somebody closer talking to my age. Like look around like austin or even andrew as they're all twenty five twenty six years folks is. That's a very good point. Let's i haven't really paid close attention to their ages. So gray hulls. But i don't know how old katie but she just turned thirty. I the closer to thirty or over thirty. I think better for marriage material personally. Sure a lot of these guys are in there like twenty s. That's what i'm saying. Why not have hotter cubbies twenty nine twenty nine. I mean john was thirty six. I remember them saying. Like carl's thirty four. We been talking about michael thirty six. Carl who i liked carl. Which one was carl motivational speaker. All of the k. Maybe about everybody like about the guy in the box if she gets the rose to the guy in the box if she gives the rose to the cat i dunno motivational speaker. I guess i just wanted to know more. Yeah i wonder who are you motivated. It's like you know like again. No disrespect to life coaches with questions. I get you know like told you know i it just like it opens the door for criticism and i get i get to and it was like why the fuck you give me advice neck. It's just one of those things are like you know when you say you're motivational speaker. People are kinda like tell me more. Tell me more carl. I want to know what you're doing. He's he's the one that said his you know all of his family's married with kids already. He's already there. He's ready to start a family. Oh he's who has sister. Someone made the portrait of them together. Already that's karl. His sister made a portrait of katie. And him as if they were already causing cartoon now Sister now not a little kid. This portrait like it was like a caricature a character. But they've never met was good. I i don't even remember the portrait. Remember how can to if your sister you're going on the show. She's all excited. Your sister's a good artists. She draws what is like a pretty like he's just been a good brother. Well maybe i mean you got out of bar mitzvah but it was done well. I'm just saying. I'm not gonna knock carl because he gave katya caricature of him and her sister drew. Maybe she how it works. It's the best think. Carl had too many opinions of other people mr motivational speaker. Because well if i if he if you're right about that chrissy what that means is car will be around for a while because you will let us know what he thinks and we. We like a good commentator I think aaron's gonna go far He's actually the one that kind of reminds me of josh. No definitely thomas. there's an intensity with thomas that Who knows maybe. Thomas is the greatest guy in the world. I i i met him. But it's all just snap. I do think. I'm good at reading people but nevertheless I think He is far too careful with his words calculated. Well not even. I mean it's just yes i. I i- bennett bennett. Words do i'm kyle. We didn't really even see other than his underwear. Which i need to know. Do you think he really ripped them off of hisself for just cut them prior member. He's the guy that ripped his undies jockstrap the job. Oh was that a jockstrap rosa job. It was like four and under almost like hanes white underwear like at least get cute ones and then they were throwing them around and all the guys were like. Don't touch that martin. Remember marie just very good. Good good painter. Give him props for the painter. His metaphor about like there's a space from our. I almost choked on my own vomit. Now the reason why. There's a space as big of a hoping that i can fill my heart with our love now not but also really katie with us thrown up to. I don't really know katie that well. I met her obviously briefly. Seems like a great person. I've gotten a doctor. She seems like someone who. I don't think she would've thrown up for mittens. She will wore cap mittens and like oil and she's playful likes to have fun totally different than justin. Great looking guy who like has kind of like really cheesy metaphor that he says when he his delivery in that moment was one of earnestness and like kind of being like. I want to fill the space with my heart i contact with. You know. that's what i'm saying. It just kind of uncomfortable as opposed to like a guy. He's like clearly having fun. I'm dressed like a fucking cat like he's going to women hope and trust that you don't think actually do this all the time. He also different actual puns. He also is going to go far. Yeah i think. Jetsons going far. Because i think she was into him but i mean maybe like top five okay maybe home dates just in home did hometowns from the call hometowns. Sorry i haven't been there's a difference between like do you think there's a reason the guys who get chosen to have the vignettes versus the guys who just get to come out of the limo and walk like there's like a. There's like a bunch of guys that they did the vignettes on right and then there's like the guys who come out of the limo quick and barely get any time. Do you think there's any question in terms of like packages like you meet our guys before the limo entrance. Those are meaningless. I say that. Because i didn't have one No but like. I know all serious. They don't know right when they decide to do these packages they just have met these guys. Maybe it's because their story or there there were there from Or they're available right last minute cast. So that's kind of like a gas by the producers of who we should do now how much airtime someone gets limo entrances. Do matter right. Thomas was the first one we saw. That doesn't mean he was the first one in actuality is the first one we saw Historically that's a good sign for that person you know. Yeah i would tell you but like the guys that we got almost like maybe saw them like say how to kane walk in. Yeah stan marty and like landon because like in that second limo came out. And i remember because i wrote down my notes like you have like i write down like oh this is what they said and then all of a sudden it's like boom boom boom boom boom boom boom like five people who get to say nothing. Yeah so quick towards the end. Did you guys notice how cold it was. The katie was shivering. The whole time like this room right now so it was so i was called a node not that night but the next night. That's so cold katie's katie's out there. I have another question for you. Next says something. That really bothered you about rachel..

"Flex. Their his his carleton Left you wanting more i. I'm not good with accents. As as some of you may know alley is so. I think you're a little hard on him. But it was fun and playful. I thought he sold it that he wouldn't stop more props to him for having that xl. Like i got like second hand embarrassment for their whole interaction. His delivery was awesome just getting in from chicago. Great well also have you. Seen can't hardly wait. Yes he reminded me of the his sound of his voice sounded just like the guy who was trying to get you to sign his yearbook and the memory guy the was know the yearbook was sabrina. The teenage witch. She was in can't hardly wait. The original. yeah and then there was the guy who was all about the memories. His voice sounded just like him. I if you close your eyes it was like mad. I could just anywhere if you can't hardly wait. You know what i'm talking. It's a good movie but you could hear when you watch the trailer later on she. This could be editing. But she's hugging andrew s. And she says. Did you hear st episode. Yeah in she's oh that's out there. I heard it. She breathed it. They showed it in the trailer. It was like she. She ran up to him in the teaser. She was like andrew and ran down the hallway to that until like run. Jump hug thing. I go back and watch it because i i want talk for predictions and whoever that person is is in her top for Is an it was andrew. okay. I i liked. I thought he was charming and relatable. I thought his delivery of fake in an accent which i think it's hard to go up. There could go so many different ways. And i honestly thought it was the anna. Like that's hot in vienna. He lived in vienna that certainly not because he couldn't play over here. I wasn't good enough to play where they shipped me off over there. Sure but this is a guy who said yes to an opportunity of living overseas and to me. That is someone who i would find. I would find that attractive and a person who in that says to me. You're open to adventures. There's a lot of people in andrew's shoes who may couldn't make it pro and said well just go being account now as opposed to i don't i don't know how much money you make playing pro football not american football in europe. I don't think it's a terrible amount of money and props to him for thawing as dream and shoot saying yes to an adventure to me. That says he might be a fun adventurous guys so you like andrew. So from what i know sure. Yeah on one of the photos. They put up of him though for his intro and he was talking about. Football literally was a minnesota vikings uniform though so i don't know if you like played here and if he's playing he's playing pro football in europe that means he's definitely good enough to like have been scouted by the nfl or have a tryout. At least maybe he was on a practice squad. You know like your things like that. So yes he might have had like a small audition for the nfl but ultimately is playing in. You know he's not going to have to be in the canadian league either. I mean guys. That's this is a big stretch but like no one's knocking them firs football skills here. A man and i are agreeing to his sense in zest of life and saying yes to adventures. Obviously he's saying yes to being on the bachelor she might just be saying yes to any kind of fame or notoriety he can get. Have you even heard of the european football league until it's not okay so not in it for fame. Then welcome were there. People are going to like if are the must people must be watching somebody. If they're paying you to do something. I envisioned like european football like they still have the leather helmets very antiquated the point. Is you have to envision it because you've never seen it so i don't think that Andrew is in it for the fame when it comes to playing football europe. So we'll have to see as the season. I i think it's a net positive. Okay rather than a net negative There's nothing to criticize for him. Playing european football. No nothing Who else did we. We like heard brandon the hockey player. Brendan bro just abro. Just your all. American bro hale. That's that guy. He's canadian fighter which also made him like a little bit more endearing than just the bro hockey player. I was not super into Courtney with the q- then only use everything entrance every cue that you could possibly come up with. I can't between that. And then justin doing justin rose and being hard from the news into the coming. I don't like puns like that. I don't know do you don't have to try to win win me over that way. It was too much. Justin was too much for me to when he was saying he was the rose painter. And two stroke it out. And this is what i stroke it with my little human I'm not a fan of. I'm not a big pun fan. I do know producers love a good pun. And i'm almost certain that these guys were just rolling participants and so i. I don't like necessarily knocking. These guys for saying yes. An idea that was probably suggested now who actually frightened me. Rv guy well he was gross. Jeff yes that was. That was really frightened. Why would you bring your dirty. Rv and Like a ranch plate dip talking about jeff also just a announcement. I get a new dog tomorrow. Congratulations his name is also. Jeff aren't getting a dog is tomorrow. His name is jeff surgical skin salesman. What is that does that mean. Well here's my here's my guess. What happened here. he ultimately. he's he's in sales. He's a med sales rep at some sort of medical procedure. That's the thing he sells and his like walkin impact you know like what do you do he fill out these answers and jeff you know. He went home night one obviously like from the time that they shoot this at the time that they give people is a cryan crayons cry. What do they call the thing iran. Whatever his his like these guys these guys don't come up with their own. Titles the show does based off of what they put down. And jeff seems like a guy who would sell skin. Yeah and so instead of med. Sales rep some genius. Slight asshole as well. We're going to call him a surgical skin salesman in an rv. Because they looks like he might sell skin and he looks like he's gonna be like put the lotion in the basket. No percent i was thinking that and like i couldn't even handled the spread this between the veggie plate and then he's like he's is tease. I'm not gonna ask you to go back into the room. I was like. I don't worry jeff. She ain't going back there. The that is dirty dirty dirt also. I do want to stand up for our viewers. Because i love. Rv irvy's one because katie. Because she didn't want to be mean to. Jeff was like the. Rv didn't do it for me. And i can assure you that if thomas role dip in the rv she would have had a much different opinion of the rv. I liked the way she described the. Rv's she said it's very lived in. It's worth talking about the rv at all. She was talking about jeff but worse than jeff. Hunter is absolutely frightening to me and the fact that he's still in the game is a real doozy of such. He told her he came in and said just you know i'm a catch. And they had a pitchers. I don't even remember the fish he had didn't have the i met hunter. I'm biased. But i think he's a sweet person. Mac what how. I wanna fuck them but like i think it seems like a nice guy so you would put him in the. He's the ten categories. Such a hottie. Let's do it. I said i think he's a nice guy right. Where did you get well. That's what she said. So i'm just trying to understand is putting hunter in.

I think it's important that We we suggest these rules in the past. But there's something i'm going to do on on these recaps every week just in case people need a reminder. it's a disclaimer. Really when we recap this show i. It's a friendly reminder that we are recapping the bachelorette and we are calming obviously on the people on the show. We are commenting on their characters. We are not critiquing Their character as People in real life. We are simply just giving our opinions on things we see in. Tv show a tv. Show that we recognize sometimes can be edited if for no other reason for time constraints and sometimes for dramatic effect ls we state otherwise. We haven't met these people in person. We don't know who they are and we reserve the right to be totally fucking wrong but everything we say because it's not has it's a tv show. And i encourage you people listening when you share your opinions to remember that These people they're just lovable. People i am sure and Yeah just a friendly reminder. Okay i can live with those rules. Can you live with another that. If there's more coming got cecilie rule is that we're just like you know like this is for entertainment value. Yes but we're not coming for anyone. We're not going on there. Graham to talk about the maybe to spy but not to have you. Do you do that sometimes. I need to go deep down the the thoroughness. That's why i really believe. Any loophole is where we're leading this season with accountability. She will find it. I need to know every crumb of every detail. Anyway let's get to the recap back after these messages. Hey it's summer you're going to be outside. They sure to take care of your lawn.
