Patrick Courrielche Shares the Biggest Red Pill Moment of His Life

"All retell prey of this story that was what maybe one of the key red pilling moments for you and your wife? Yeah, it was one of the biggest red pills of my life. It was 2000 around 2010 or so our daughter started to come old enough to go to preschools and what have you. And we wanted to put her in the best preschool possible and so we got her into this preschool in Hollywood. We didn't know it at the time because we were friends with a lot of celebrities and the Hollywood people and what have you and that's how we ended up getting into this place. We didn't realize it, but it's this kind of community, this exclusive club in Hollywood. It's one of the most exclusive clubs, perhaps in America, where it happens to be the school systems in these epicenters like New York and Hollywood. With this particular system, was a fascinating look into the belly of the beast of Hollywood. We ended up getting into this elementary school. And it was all of the big celebrities were there. Jason Bateman had a kid in our class. Melissa McCarthy ended up having a kid in our class, Adam Scott, who's a big actor from multiple movies had kids in her class. Steve Carell. I mean, I could just go through and just start naming studio heads, huge writers. And we started to look around and we're like, why is everyone so excited about being here? And we started to realize that we were in a cult. And that's really, it's not an exaggeration. These people create this kind of community where they can kind of network with one another and it's more than just a kid going to school. Well, we had this experience where we caught this guy getting in bed. You're not going to believe this. We caught this guy getting in bed with other people's kids, okay? On sleepovers, right? Sleepovers, ages from kindergarten to second grade or so. And we caught him getting in bed with people's kids and we're like, what? What? And so we start asking around, there's this moment where all of these parents kind of went away the women went away on this kind of mommy's trip. They start talking to one another and they start talking about this guy and they have each has different stories about him getting in bed with other people's kids.

"Remember Melissa McCarthy from Saturday Night Live? Yeah. Remember, she would do an impersonation of Sean Spicer. Do you remember how fun that was? Well, guess what? I got the actual guy, Sean Spicer, Sean Spicer. Welcome to the program. Congratulations on the new book called radical nation, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris's dangerous plan for America. Great to see you. Good to see you. For a second, I actually thought you might have Melissa. I was ready to ask a question. I was going to say, but you're the real thing. Who wants the actress when we can get the guy spicy himself, okay? It's kind of funny because Saturday Night Live rarely does stuff that is to my mind. I mean, if they were making fun of me, maybe I wouldn't see their way. But it struck me as a tremendously affectionate homage. Like there was just something about it that I don't know if you ever talked about that publicly. But there's something about the way she did it that made me whether I knew you or not, like you because of because of what she did. Did you did you feel that or were you just annoyed? So the first one that they did, I thought was like, not only funny, but let's be honest. It was kind of well deserved. I had a tough week. And made a few missteps. And so I thought it was like, okay, that's a little bit of a jab. You gotta laugh at yourself. And so well deserved. The subsequent ones I thought were really starting to get personal. And while they definitely had a hint of humor in them, I thought that they were more like mean spirited than funny. Actually, that's interesting, 'cause I may be missed those. I may be missed those. I mean, I'm not even kidding. I'm not even kidding. The super soaker one got all the attention, and then I don't look. I don't remember, since they weren't making fun of me. I don't know the

"Thing that came out of me. Having to watch kate this week a movie that i absolutely despise but it is on netflix. And as you know netflix. Loves to shove things in your face other things that you should be watching when you're watching whatever you're watching and it ships something in my face. That was really interesting and surprising. So i know we've talked before on the show about my love for bob. Ross the The painting cure who painted on on television for so many decades. He is actually someone discovered as an adult. I know lots of people grew up including my life partner. Grew up watching bob. Ross and in part got interested in painting and art because of him. I never knew as a kid. He wasn't on in texas where. I grew up at least that i knew about so. I was probably in my mid thirties or something when i first started missing the incredible piece peaceful phenomenon. That is watching a bob. Ross painting and we've talked about that on this show before. I think i've even endorsed something. Bob ross related. But there's a new documentary about him. That is completely shocking. Actually controversial that his family may sue the filmmakers about and that's remotely related to another topic. We talked about this week because it was produced by melissa mccarthy and her husband ben fell cone. Oh you know what. I'm talking about karen. I know the documentary talking about. I didn't know that it was produced by them. Yes they were behind the production and And when they set out to make this movie. I mean i think they were thinking. We're gonna make a feel good movie about this beloved character. The tv painter. Bob ross but as it turns out on it won't give away with these twists. Are you know. Bob ross's legacy and his family are this huge tangle of sort of you know It's a big legal mess. Basically there are a lot of people who wouldn't come on camera to talk about him. You know there is an affair that no one wants to talk about..

There was a key just kind of go to the lobby after the seat in there like now. It's fine oh my like you said some things that i was like. Oh mom mom. Yeah i i did a show years ago in chicago state show and one of the parts of the state show and i did it with robert smiling bob. Odin kirk and a bunch of other performers and. We did the sketch that we weren't able to get on saturday night. Live at later on down alive and it was about a new camp a nudist camp. And the whole idea was it starts with I think it started with Two people out there and Roberts michael and another performer. Everything's strategically covered. They look naked but it. Because it's a live show. They're just they're holding things that are covering genitalia and then the one guy saying don't worry about it. He's like well. It's my first time. You quickly forget that you're naked. It's not a big thing you get over it and and it's the most natural thing in the world and then you're just talking about kinds of stuff and he was like really and he's like yeah. Trust me it's going to be fine. And then i would enter and i've got a guitar. That's covering me and i go. Hey jack hey bill. This is my friend steve. Oh hey steve. Hey.

Three operators on on that were types combined not specific. Divide gina perks. You had success. You had you had proven yourself. Then bridesmaids comes along. And it's the change for you which i thought was really lovely because it was deserved by moving. Probably seen fifteen times and i think my wife is seen forty five minutes and Whenever we encounter that movie wherever we find it. And whatever we're doing we stop and we watch until the movie's over but your character is absurd but also and i. I don't know if i should credit this to your acting training because you you know. I now know that you spent many years but its commitment. I say almost all parts. I've played for the most part i really have like. I loved them. Like i fall in love with with who they are and so i just tried to do the best job of like. They are funny but they're funny. Because i always. I think we fall in love with people in the world because of our ticks and weirdnesses and eccentricities. I don't somebody like i love. Them has the perfect a never say the wrong thing. They never. i'd be like. Oh it'd be so i think of bannon. I'm mike worse so weird so incredibly weird that when i play people i think sometimes they're like oh you're making fun of that type of woman. I'm like no that's the woman that fascinates me that same. I can't take my eyes off of because eccentric people to me are the ones that like. If you're in a store and there's just somebody that's like yemen all purple. You see the party. That's literally like i get love. God i'm not making fun of them. "Delightful about being conan o'brien's best friend best friend. Yeah i'm assuming yes yes. Of course i have to make a few calls very quickly back to school walking lose. Hello there and welcome to conan. O'brien friend I am conan o'brien. I think that's pretty clear. And yes. I'm always need a friend. This podcast is a search To connect with people. I'm having an absolute blast. I've been doing this for a while. Now and i just keep having more and more fun so it's been kind of a revelation and i am assisted as always by my right hand are sort of producer. Extraordinaire matt gowrali. You're right withered hand. Exactly no you're Terrific job matt. And and you are you know i. I didn't realize this when i first met you. I thought you know who is clown. And i think i behaved terribly towards you an overtime. I found that you are the podcast whisper. You're very well respected in regard in the podcast space. I still don't take anything back. I think it helped. You built your character. can you believe it. We're coming up on three years. Is it really almost three years. Yeah it's been fun. It's been just sailing by and of course sunlamps essien ben with us for a long time. She is out right now. Maternity leave rearing Her her twin babies. Mikey and shirley and Saw them recently on zoom and they are adorable and filling in for sona Is her assistant. I can't believe sonal had an assistant because apparently sonnen never did anything. But but what little see did do you. Were doing david. Hopping thanks for being here. David thank you. You know it's funny. I was Recently obsessed yesterday. Someone said that they had one criticism of the podcast. And of course I was intrigued. And i said what's that and the person said it's not long enough. Oh and i thought well. That's good. I like that because we're and i said well we always want to leave him in show business wanting more person didn't seem to like that. I said that they're like no no no. It really isn't long enough. The interviews needs to be longer. I enjoy them but they stopped too soon. And i was trying to explain that. I don't want to you know i didn't wanna do like a two hour extravaganza. I've been editing. These down to four minutes those. What's the problem is. But i'm always afraid of going too long but this person was quite adamant that that these should be longer and i'm just going to say no i'm just gonna say what's our average running time may comes in around sixty minutes without ads so it can go anywhere from an hour five to our ten. But then if it's someone like michael keaton or something that might go a little longer. Barack obama who we actually did a shockingly. I only did. I think he was prepared to talk to me for an hour. And after remember after eleven minutes i said i think we got it. Remember that and he went. But i have a lot to say that i haven't said to anybody before and i'd like to tell you now conan things about my personal life and i said yeah. Yeah yeah yeah. Yeah yeah we got. I think we're good. Gotta go. And i probably could have gone a little longer with him. Well next time he keeps asking back. He won't leave us alone. He was he the person that said that he was the one new. Then he called me back. The but guest is not lung and exactly seven minutes. You cut me off. That's not really. I don't even think that's a barack obama impression but it gives you the idea. It's auto he punches his senses but anyway I think we're gonna keep it. What do you think. Matt what could be. Better about the podcast. I'm always trying to get better and grow in every way. Wow god man. I'm not prepared for this. Just means there's nothing else we can do. it's perfect. I tried to think of something. There's not a single thing. Yeah well that's why. I always ask for criticism very quickly on the spot and then move on. Yeah that's smart. Never give anyone time to think about all the things that we could do to make this so much better because needs that david. How're you enjoying. Experience of being on the podcast. It's been fun getting recognized the line now. No podcast podcast tech sona. How much fun as to be her. Oh my god sonal has so much foam. Oh and for you kids listening this fear of missing out She can't stand that we're having all this fun and that she's missing her old life as happy as she is Having created to human beings and then we tormentor. So we'll do david. And i keep doing all of sony's favorite things that she would do with me like she loves sushi from this place. Sugar fit and there's one right next to our podcast studio. And i keep taking david there. And that's one of her. Favorite things in the world is eating on my dime and david and i will gorge ourselves on really good sugar fish sushi and then we take selfies. We're i'm just laughing. Maniacally and you're in the background some taurel hanging out of your mouth. And then we sent to sona and she flips out and then he'll and then at the end hill he could just give me they're asleep. He'll take a picture of the receipt. Texted disown yeah. I texted disowned by the way. Make sure this receipt gets accounted for. And she's like david's right there. I can't believe i'm saying this but we should do a segment where we eat s'mores and watch friends just to make. Oh my god. Yeah we should do everything sonal would like to do. And just to tormentor that would mean alcohol. She likes her. She likes her white wine and we watch that movie about the stripper. The male strippers magic. Mike yeah we should do a magic. Mike binge-watch while we drink white wine and idea and get high. I s and eat tons of in and out burger. Oh my gosh. And if and and then just be laughing maniacally and videotaping the whole thing and then we should send it to sona. I love this great plan and has a night sounds good. Yeah it's not even shoot it or let's split so also i just say let's skip all the other stuff. Let's all go and watch the male strippers. Let's the three of us. Go to vegas drink wine at the thunder down under strip club And i yeah and they just hang out for weeks and weeks with the guys. From what am i going through strange. Just keep coming back to..

That's not the way you do it and i was like got it. Good advice good advice. Let's take some questions from a virtual fans. Here's quarter carter from florida with a question for melissa. I love you all. The my question is melissa. It is in honor of the bridesmaid's ten year anniversary this year. What do you think your character. Megan would be up to all these years later. Oh lord i hope she's like long haul trucking stone living in alaska with a th ripple but she's really trying to just mix it up in alaska log haul. I think she'd be going. I didn't see that one coming. Here's meredith from new jersey with a question for chelsea. Hi andy hi melissa. Hi chelsea this questions for chelsea are you and jo koy dating. Since the two of you looked really cute together at the dodgers game last week good question. We're now we're just very affectionate. That's nice thanks for jewel fans. Melissa the movie is so sweet. And you're so wonderful in it and tell me what attracted you to it. Because it's it's it's serious that it's sweet and it's you know. It's not a raging comedy. It attracted me because i bought these characters. I bought the you know. It's what life is. It's it's it's up and down and sideways and it's messy and they're not perfect people and i also think i love when in the midst of some really kind of tough times as he still have humor. And it's what you do. I mean it's like you laugh at a funeral and cried a wedding. Because says just weird and i like that it really represents real life to me instead of some kind of perfect conjured world. I i fell in love with with the the characters. Plus starlings are very sweet. Well they kept attacking me so you to my gut says a unique comedic voice but i wonder if voicing the same personal opinions could give us an epic double act. "I mean the reality is if you look at the level of scripts right I get pretty great scripts that are dramas scifis like all of those weight. Right and a level comedies script. It's go to melissa mccarthy and godspeed like i get it so unlike way down that list In terms of something like that. And for me. I want to kind of go like where the great scripts are. I'm very happy to play. Celia foote or tammy faye because there's a sense of outrageousness that unlike silliness. I don't normally get to do. But maybe i don't need to be made of comedy when you have like melissa mccarthy out there right right and where are you at now with. We kind of eluded to the dark phoenix situation. Which we don't necessarily need to go into deeper deportees on but you have you you've been able to manage for the most i think pretty well. I kind of like doing the big stuff. The martian interstellar And and also staying trudy larussa really odds for Driven smaller films That being said like. I know for years we've talked about on. I talked about with every actor. Like where's the superhero role. It does strike me like oscars doing a marvel superhero ant your body from juilliard. Anthony mackie is captain america. Does it feel like this. Is there a reason like it. Just never happened was ever give me a super villain. I don't wanna be superhero. Because here's something earlier doing like ten films. I see you want to get in and out like let's see like really nasty and like really like that would be fun. But i don't wanna sign a ten year contract. Yeah it's yeah. No i get it i get. Is there like the actors and filmmakers. You have worked with are again. Run the gamut. Is there an acura filmmaker. You've talked with the most stuff for whatever. Reason just hasn't happened yet but the timing hasn't worked out. I mean everybody does one value. Like i can't believe i'm already into this many years and it still hasn't when when the when the hell are we gonna actually step in front of a counter together Well gary oldman in some sense. "It's a window faces and when melissa mccarthy is like you're an asshole it's startling because it's like realizing that you've been an asshole. It feels kind of cold truth because you don't feel like that. And then you realize. Melissa mccarthy absolutely right well i'll just go back and say that you know part of this script. I think the idea was conceived. By kristen wigan any molo and they made this movie and enjoyed apple tau at this point. I was known for making a movie putting someone in it. That person being very funny and then making the next movie with them. Whether it was jonah hill whether it was kristen wig who in knocked up all these people like knocked up in many ways is like the baseline for where everybody expanded to the next movies. Everyone kept on growing out of them. You know seth rogan jona and kristen wig. Everyone got almost a little bit of a spin off. And paul i think has this amazing ability to get to these moments of truth. And i don't know why this image is coming to my head but i feel like it will make sense when i say it but when you look at like martin star and freaks and geeks you know which is a paul fig jet appetito joint. There's this moment of like martin stars character disag- laughing watching Oh my gosh. Now i i. I'm gonna mess correct me. If i'm wrong on the internet like garry shandling on the tonight show and just the laughing so hard and so. It's such an earnest moment of like being. It's a very reflective show. I think that that show like shows like the freaks and geeks And shows like what is behind them when their guards down. These are the characters that are the jokes on the show. And they're the leads the show and you've got to understand and identify with them and see them in joyful moments and sad moments and the creates very three dimensional Comedy characters and. I think that this movie really thrives with that touch it becomes. It doesn't become something. Like and not that. I'm going to compare these two but i will barbara star which is so fucking funny and giant and and also has a heart and a grounding to it. That is wonderful. And i. And i love seeing anne and kristen who came up together in the groundlings do that movie together as co stars and not just have any very small part like she is in the airplane in this movie.

"This month. Alexa is going to sound a little bit. Different on july fifteenth the tech giant rolled out an update to its digital voice assistant to include a second voice option. As you know amazon's assistant typically has like a feminine sounding voice with this update. You can change that to a more masculine voice setting this all up his quite simple. You just say the assistant's name followed by quote. Change your voice and quote but that's not all there's an additional wake word you can use in place of alexa. That new word is ziggy Basically it works the same way instead of saying the primary name of amazon's digital assistant You can say ziggy instead. If you're a fan of gigi and you've never tried to swap out the wake word and you kind of want to try it out. Anyway you have some other choices to You can use amazon. You can use echo or you can use computer And the way to do this is really simple. Just like with the change. Your voice option. You can make a query to the assistant and say change the wake word to whatever you want Another way to do this too is open up the app for the voice assistant go to the menu. Select your settings than device settings. Then you go to the device that you want to update with this new wake word and then you choose the when you want and that's it now if you don't want either of these options for voices you can actually add a little bit of celebrity flare After introducing an option awhile. Back to add actor. Samuel jackson's voice to queries amazon is much similar offerings featuring actress melissa mccarthy an nba legend shaquille. "I got something. No you like. That's the whole thing is just a stick of. Let's most mccarthian in octavia spencer in superhero costumes and adam doing making jokes about weight and all that but also some superhero jokes than already so many other commies have done to death like the whole idea of making a generic villain. I thought deadpool are iran. That's the ground. Along with. Lego batman in harley quinn and insert another superhero comic view on. Do oh the boys. The boys did a brilliant job at that by her academia invincible. Which is currently at all these other superheroes commies are done. What you're doing and in they done so clever in this. This is not none of that. This is like. I'm just going to write what i see other people doing. 'cause eight people love melissa mccarthy logos and yet this is one of the worst movies i've seen this year because it is so late. It's the it's is. The definition of a lazy put together comedy from the jokes. Be filmmaking and even the action like i thought located superhero film Lease the action would be exciting but no. I didn't find anything appealing of this. I just look at probably the best parts. Just octavia. Spencer is here. What her role is not great enough to make me go like well. You gotta watch it for her. No watcher different movies like the daughter i. I wouldn't mind seeing her in something else but here. She is given nothing to do. But just be that one to cheer on melissa mccarthy for her troubled antics the fact that he will destroy things caused several million dollars of which they bring it up by the way but the end the day thunder force and even the concept thunder force like. I don't know where they were going. That like what was the name supposed to be funny. thunder four. It's kind of like an old cartoon network show like nothing of this film is working in that. The house looks like to end. Yeah i. I'm gonna get annoyed for scoreless thing. Could i mean i guess i'll give it a high avoid. It's not the worst movie. I've seen but like jay said there's nothing in this do a compliment. There's like nothing in a good. It's just it's just a lazy film that they made. And i can't believe that they got all these people to get involved in it like. Did they do it because they needed something to do. Or they favors or add net flicks. Just throw a bunch of money at and say it's probably the reason i mean. This has a lot of films on there. So it's like yeah you want. Everybody gets where one of the richest streaming services out there if you wanna. A movie doesn't matter we can make the other one film they rejected in history was Holmes and watson yet they still let we'll we'll or net do his thing another films. There's nothing worth your wild here as you said there're things in the own superhero genre. That is making fun of the genre and doing a more clever and interesting take on this. "A river Crat river over you. Wow rife multi music. yes. I like it. Well we've got kevin car and he must have seen me at the movie because he calls his show fat to movies. Kevin glad to have you with us today so much good to be here. We're glad we're glad we're glad you got a couple of movies. You wanna talk about. I guess what our options. There's two that i want to highlight. One of them is an exclusive in theaters. and that is voyageurs. This is a science fiction. Sort of a drama thriller about a group of people who are on a spaceship heading to colonize another planet and they've basically genetically engineered everybody for this task and kind of kept him inclusion so they didn't miss earth when they go off for the rest of their lives and eventually because it was gonna take like eighty some years to get there. They're going to have kids and their grandkids will end up colonizing planet and while they're on the mission as as young adults as teenagers or early twenties they discover that there. There've been giving a drug that basically suppresses their libido their aggression and so they stopped taking it and well bad things start happening on the ship and you have to figure out how to get the rules going back and out of control themselves and how to disciplining work with discipline. I it's sort of like the idea of them. Sort of left to their own devices a little bit like lord of the flies. So i like to refer to this as space lord of the flies yours visit see lord of the flies though is is a great story. It's glared and it's got a lot of texture and it's got a lot to say about human nature and Individual freedom and how you interact with each other and form governance and everything. This one doesn't quite have the level of nuance since a little bit. More one dimensional as they go through so while it all looks good. You know some great special effects in some good production design a very attractive cast. It doesn't quite peck the punch. That should well. You mentioned in the heard. The word libido so. How's this movie rated veto if pg thirteen and they may make some changes to it if you guys you watch the trailers you're like oh my gosh it's just a bunch of second space and it really isn't i mean i think they dialed back because i think are aiming for a young adult audience there. The guy directed is a guy named neil burger and he directed the first does divergent movie. And so i think they're trying to give that kind of that kind of an audience which would mean they want to sort of make a little more accessible to everybody of all ages but in that sense it sort of bouterse the whole production now. Is there any inkling in this movie. The maybe once they get to their destination there will be sequels will take us to that or is this just move standalone operation alternately. A stand alone movie they they. They sure you could always have done a sequel to this. It depends on how well it does. I mean i. I don't think it deserves sequel. We'll see what the audience say so this this isn't on the top of your list but yet it does. Sound interesting speculative fiction. It has some great ideas. It just squander them well and we have had some awesome awesome fiction science fiction movies. Tv shows in of john. That i like it. Sure absolutely thunder force. This is netflix. I am so impressed with the things that netflix has done and probably. May i hope that this one tell us about into force under force is it's a backdrop of superheroes but it's not as standard superhero movie Because it's sort of it. You're getting movies now on tv series. That are sort of playing off the the genre itself. So they're a little bit of an offshoot to it in this. When you've got. Melissa mccarthy and octavia spencer the stars spencer plays the scientist develops a serum that can give them superpowers so they can fight these other sites who have got it from radiation And i but but of course it's two women in their forties who have a body shape. There's lock closer to mind and you'd have your standard superhero character. So it's a little bit the absurdity of these these women trying to do the superhero thing. And it's very funny. I mean first of all most mccarthy's funny and everybody knows that but navy spencer is also very funny. I think she's fantastic. I i love to see her doing different. I do different movies. And then you know playing around with shahnawaz Give you a chance to stretch. It's directed by ben found tone who is a melissa mccarthy's husband and i generally don't like his movies that he does but i think in nepotism has paid off a bit for him and kinda finally figured out how to direct a funny movie. This sounds like gals at the movies to why we'll see. Here's the thing that's interesting. Is we used to get movies with most of mccarthy and all just kind of descend into fat jokes this is. This is a lot more humor then. They're waiting their age. I mean sure they take a couple you know self deprecating dixon themselves but not every punch line is that and i think that's kind of what makes the movie work. Actually that makes sense well and netflix. Overall i have found to have produced some really outstanding Movies i think of longmire favorites all time Movies that i will. It's a tv show but series. And i wish they do some more. But i guess they're done and although there was one that Kinda got to me. It was called the ranch. I think that should have been more called. The ranch was pretty well. It was a documentary about the bunny. Ranch was no this. Was the one with sam sheppard and the yeah in austin. What's his name. The big talk here. That was mary to demi moore cooter. Yeah yeah it was pretty ritchie. Yeah did they call it to ranch and then of course my all time favorite is heartland one of the great great. Well yeah i mean that's industry and services in general have really upped their game. They're really trying to and they've made their way into the marketplace. The point that It it it's really paid off for them in the last year with so many people staying home that they can actually deliver stuff directly to you and you still got you know. Quality content in the loaning. Dea think that there is a place in this world for the old fashioned movie theatre. If you look at the box office from godzilla vs cong- from last week. It did exceptionally well. It did almost. I wouldn't say at pre pandemic levels but it was getting there. I think there's a kind of a perfect storm for that. It was a lot of buzz. It was a big screen movie. There hadn't been any big spreader events traits to movie theaters. So a lot of people went. I still think that we've got a little bit of a hill declined to get back to normal with theaters. But it shows that there's still a possibility for a The actual experience. Although i do not expecting to go back one hundred percents to the way they were because i think studios in particular disney is trying to figure out a way to service both audiences those who want to be in theaters. And those who wanna stay at home and make as much money as they can and so. I think they're going to be looking at hybrid models for this.

"Me to talk about barbara star. Is rachel sign a staff writer for the new yorker. Hey rachel her so thanks for joining me for this one. I really was excited to talk about this one with you because you wrote something about it a little view in appreciation of it for the new yorker that i really love and i felt really tapped into some of the things that are special about this movie. I'm going to read a tiny bit of it back to you. Maybe that can inspire conversation so this comes early in what you're writing about it when you talk about the transition from what i would think of as the setup the first twenty minutes or so where we beat barbara starr in their hometown of soft rot nebraska and how it then it then transitions to town of title of vista del. Mar in florida. And so you're right. There solid jokes from the get-go but it's not clear right away. What the movie is up to our. Wigan molo denizens of los angeles where they first met as part of the l. Sketch comedy troupe. The groundlings taking the piss out of flyover over forties then skipping ahead of bit is talking about the the that transition you say but as barbara starr unfolds. It's quirky heroines fuel. Less and less like stand ins for certain kind of tj maxx shopper. Instead the film goes for something far more specific and silly loving often lovely. Where so many comedies are either retreads old ideas or feel designed by committee to hit newsy talking points. Barbara starr is the rare film. That feels sue generous in both conceit an execution barbara starr or such finely drawn characters that they could be nobody else but themselves so that really spoke to me and exactly what i love about this movie and this was going to frame it to you. Is that this movie gets compared a lot to bridesmaids which of course was written by the the co writers and co stars of this movie and malone christian wig and another movie that sprung to mind was spy which is this wild sort of a spoof of james bond films. That's also a female friendship bonding movie with incredible performances by melissa mccarthy and rose byrne i love both bridesmaids an spy but i found this movie far more original than either one and in a way more exciting i mean i can see why bridesmaids changed comedy history. It's an important movie. it's still a very funny movie. But this sui generis quality that you point to i think is is so much more vibrant in this movie which really could only have come out of the imaginations of these two women who are friends in real

And for a lot of amazing reasons which i would love to like dive into because your career honestly i mean in my direct circle of of humans that i know like i truly admire and want to emulate your path really. Yeah oh that's very here especially when like last you know now. Three four years. I just haven't been able to like do the next thing. Things haven't worked out so really feel that way because you know maybe there's hope for me yet i will. I'm going to go off my vibes. I think i think i can't see anything not going for. Its ultimate highs. Good with you. I think my god in your mouth to the university. I'm channeling okay. And i'm putting it out there because i don't know it's just something about when got to meet you and then spend more time with you in our eight-plus group which i wanna get into a little bit in our in our shot but just like honestly like having witnessed what you've been able to do with like gazillion dollar properties in link and acting in like your ability to adapt and like your openness and the now your podcast like i'm basically prefacing this entire conversation right right up front yellow billboard a baby we're billboard out of this but it's just honestly there's a lot that kind of come up in my in my podcast that i don't even know how i got here because i thought it was like if i do. Ten episodes were good but like a big theme. That's emerged out of a lot of these conversations. The the the value of persistence and the ability to be resilient and pivot. And just keep going you know f. It's like completely like. I don't know what the hell is happening right now. Where we're just gonna go with. Yeah so i mean you do that to me. That's like the vibe. I get from you and just a lot of like joy and positivity and like let's handle us well for some. I think it's a it's a. it's a add. Certainly been around folks. have career trajectories have skyrocketed. It by the way all those people are hard workers with like with ability and Material to like take them up there But for me it's more of a long game. It's a steady you know. Isn't it for all of us. Seen folks they do you know and that is that is they're weighing in. It's you know it's part of my by doing is an end discipline is just. It's not mine. You're not my way and they are things you can't change for sure. That's the okay. I'm recognizing i would love to know how you've been navigating twenty the the joy that was twenty twenty I mean you know navigating you know if you know if there's just a boat that's not sinking but it's still as humanly possible makes it sound like there's like you know we're heading. We're on our way general floating. Yeah mine is more just sort of like a rafts that has not sell. No ores getting imagery right now. There's a point where the tide get really rough and you're like i got nothing man just going to end up where we end up was really boring if again not be ocean. Oh i should be clear. It's not the ocean we're body daughter. Is this what did this. Euro said health anytime. I laugh off after last year's been like i'm digging man. I'm digging. i'm digging up old. Yes, Yes, right. They were in something else together. And they were very funny like she was like the character was kind of like, you know, like, like I would ever go out with you kind of Thing, which is always funny when you know they're really married. Yeah, so that that that should be a good serious. I'm looking forward to that myself. And Starbucks is

"Tiffany Haddish is winning so big great. Now, she got three movies coming out this fall in September night school with Kevin Hart in October, the oath of political comedy in November Tyler. Perry's next one nobody's fool and next year she's already got the lego movie to secret life of pets to the kitchen with Melissa McCarthy and Elizabeth Moss Tiffany. So hot right now, there's not enough water in La to put out the fire. She's a Hollywood allaster and she built all this after being homeless for years. She built all this on the strength of her comedy and the strength of her spirit. She made this happen by thinking it into existence. What do I mean? That the last black Unicord tell you, it's Tiffany Haddish on Tori show. You see like overnight and I know you're not I know you've been grinding for a long time. We'll see that was all part of my plan and my manifestation I wanted everyone to think, oh, that's brand new where that come from and then. We'll be long time. What was was keeping you going when you were just grinding sleep in the car coming up no promise of that. It was going to work out like. What was keeping you going? Knowing that I that I am going to do it having the I knew is like. Like. A little girl knows periods gonNA come at some point. You don't know when it's going. KT Tunstall (Live)

"Hello Hello Welcome. That's quite funny that you picked that lineup by the funnies because it was I said it in barons in Glasgow when we were recording a live album on the tour and finally is a very endearing to call someone in Glasgow. If you're being an idiot appeared fanny and it just came out. It was unplanned. It's on my live album so yeah I think is gonNA glass that one great. Hashtag stike five eight member to write the word five. So you've been based out in La for some time now and that's obviously a very different culture. Has that impacted on your song race in Seoul what you say. Yeah I think location is always GONNA be important ingredient in what material you come up with and I'd actually go night to La to sort of start again. Because I'd been through some really difficult stuff here in the UK a dotted past divorce. Everything owned just really needed a fresh start. I wanted some sunshine and I wanted to be somewhere just in this of replenishing environment. London's quite overwhelming very fast place city. Oh it was found it quite difficult to relax in London and I gone to Venice. Beach was onto an. I'd been going to La for a long time tour but it was the first time few years ago I went to Venice beach and it was the first place. I'd been where everyone is just bombing around every day of the week. You don't have to wait for the weekend and that's actually really helpful for what we did. Because we don't have weekends in London if I had a Wednesday off. Everyone's just giving me evil looks because I've got time off whereas there it's just a very laid back quite an alternative culture in that part of La and La's basically like twitter. It just totally depends who you follow. You can have an extremely different experience living in different parts of La knowing different people. It's very separate all these areas so you can. You can really have a completely opposed experience of living there from someone else and so I chose Venice and I was going to take a break. I felt very stagnated. It just felt like I was caught in an eddy of finding the mixer. He's mixing everybody's staff of being in competition with you know inevitably any other female musicians that anyone could think of. And I just wasn't very inspired to make a record so I've actually gone out to L. A. Really to study film composition which I did but it was really just listening to west coast rock sixties and seventies row. Tom Petty fleetwood. Mac Neil Young Joni that got me writing some real kind of Air Punch big choruses again and the world had sort of become darker at that stage that was like two thousand fifteen things were on the turn and so if I was writing similar stuff folk inspired stuff like I did on invisible empire crescent me my fourth record. I probably would have to shelve it and waited but I was writing these really. Big Pop. Choruses about overcoming difficulty so it felt like quite helpful thing to put out into the world. I was excited to do it. Yeah we're always fascinated by right zoo. Kinda take a break from when we spoke to front healy. He said it's Kinda like select the field life. Follow for Awhile and I think that's really important. I think that's why I mean. Some people can smoke fags burgers every day until they're one hundred and five and they're fine. Everyone's different but it certainly works for me to not be constantly trying to keep up a level of output people often ask about writer's block and I actually watched them a star is born. The other day was it as far as born. No it was the wife. It was that foam the wife. Brilliant Glenn Close Foam. And there's a line in it where they're at this really pretentious party. No it wasn't even the wife. Can you ever forgive me? It was one of the Oscar nominated movies when Melissa. Mccarthy goes to this book party. And someone's asking this really pretentious right or do you ever get writer's block and he goes well. I don't subscribe to writer's block I was like. Oh my God. I say that it sound so pretentious but I actually don't. I just think it's quite arrogant to expect your creative mind to just do what you tell it to do. I don't understand really where the gift of some rain comes from. And so if people ask me that question I'm like look how many books how many films how many plays how many museums of you said that you want to go and see Redo Watch ingest and you've done use that time. Fill yourself with some stuff. Get some input or sit and do nothing in your Pyjamas. Also very useful. I find but you shall time for creativity. Oh that sounds like a bit of a paradox book. Do you put a new. Yes so it's a great excuse to go on. Adventures. I love right now albums. I love albums that one piece of vinyl because I think that four or five minute cut off point is actually a really good of point for how much music you can ingest at one time. The same for podcasts. Yeah good to know. I'll keep my answers slightly shorter but yeah I think albums are a really extraordinary form of making music. Even if you're not I mean I'm in the middle of the matic are making three albums together in a trilogy at the moment. But even if you're not doing that there's a there's a familial kind of hermetically sealed world within which that record is made and so many people will come up to me and say that their favorite track is an album track. And IT WASN'T I. It would have been the single at first but Israeli side that we're kind of moving. I'm not a lot of people I know are not but in general. There is a move away from albums. And I think that that's a shame because it kind of is taking away that deep dive on a snapshot of an artist's life at that time so tell us about that idea that you've been chewing Kim and walks. Did you have a unifying concept of the trilogy before you even started? Nope that was the thing that was really funny trilogy. You would think that you would decide upon that before you started. And I didn't and I wrote can and it was so very healing experience. In that record it was coming with kind of really Fu blast Mojo but really feeling like it was the beginning of the second half of my life so I came to. Kim is quite a different person than I had been up until that point and in many ways the fourth record invisible empire crescent meeting. I kind of see funeral music. It's cold these titles because my dad died right in the middle of those sessions and it was. He wasn't very well but it wasn't expected. And then I kind of had this wake up where I just went on Gordon with the wrong person. I'm sort of in the wrong life. And so yeah. And this is when procurement was this kind of funeral march to that happening and so then became this real phoenix from the ashes. It was this real beginning of something completely new for me and you know it's very easy to take a show. L. A. N. It's completely deserved. It's total bullshit van. You know people go. Oh my God. You're amazing you've got to do the movie. Oh they never called me ever again but there is also this amazing element to la where it's really is the vanguard of a low of new thoughts from health to filmmaking to the arts. You don't get laughed at for trying weird stuff. And there's a brilliant Frank Lloyd Wright Amion love he's an intrinsic part of La's architecture and kind of culture and but he says if you turn America on its site everything falls in California and so you just get a low of Weirdos and a low of them eccentric people and the thing I particularly like about L. A. Is Wild in many ways but actually like literally you can drive twenty minutes and be at the top of a mountain and be killed by a lion and that's the truth and there's Koyo Cheese and eagles and it really is untamed and it's also completely untamed in Mississippi as well because there's not as with guns in their cars so it's just a really extreme place so meditation had been a big part an always wanted to get into yoga just healing myself and getting really healthy and it's very easy to do there and I did and I really enjoyed it. Meditation became quite an important part of my daily life. And very good doing this job to just actually learn to control your brain because a lot of the time the monkey brain is just jotting chatting biscuit to shut up for fifteen minutes Varvara Day but it was during a meditation session on the tour for Qin's Akin was all finished and I am. I just had a really really strong vision. That can was the first part of a trilogy. It was all about the soul owned by the spirit and I knew I wanted to make a real rock and roll record next and I knew I wanted to explore electric guitar because I hadn't really delved into that. It always been acoustic and that to me is the most visceral most physical Instrument Electric Guitar.

"Frank gonna start off with a Melissa McCarthy film called the kitchen almost everyone has been anything but have babies two men have forgotten what family means so we remind now a few minutes ago we were talking about Melissa McCarthy awhile she's generally known for and a silly comedies she's actually a pretty good actress what about this movie yeah she is a pretty good actor she was in a film last year of live action and and the powerful drama will you ever forgive me in which she played a an author who got into trouble for faking biographies of people this is another drama and she's good in it Tiffany had issues in it too a comedian whose turn to dramatic acting this is about three wives of mob figures in nineteen seventies New York who take over the protection of racquets after their husbands get sent to prison and they become powerful mob figures in hell's kitchen which is what the film is named after this is based on a comic book series actually and it's rather than being edgy and and very deep it's sort of pulp fiction trashy but it's kind of entertaining trash if you know what I mean it's it's not a terrible movie is not a terribly good and perceptive one either but McCarthy and had a sure very good and it is an excellent supporting class cast in it as well but you have to be ready to accept some pretty graphic violence in this movie this is not an easy movie to watch in some of the sequences so you should be forewarned about that it's a kind of a medium grade movie but if you're in the right frame of mind you might find it

Disney+ Will Reboot Four Fox Movie Franchises

"Us about disney's plans to boot several popular fox properties so disney snitch chief robert iger announced on an earnings call with investors that the studios developing several reboots and reimagining of fox's family friendly hits including being titles like home alone ninth museum dairy of wimpy kid and cheaper by the dozen and these reboots would be debuting on disney plus according to a new report from collider rider so these are fox's most recent <hes> family friendly hits apart from cheaper by the dozen which is actually slee remake in a ended of itself so and it seems like disney plus is building its titles original content to be largely reboots reboots in a sense <hes> and <hes> recognizable i._p. In addition to this there are also seeing some disney live action makes his animated films like lady and the tramp as as well as just the marvel and star wars titles but <hes> that seems to be the strategy that disney plus is going forward in the coming streaming wars. I mean that's kind kind of depressing isn't it that that disney acquired fox just to sort of push off some of these like remix fox properties onto disney plus yep <hes> they can't just have these <hes> these classics on their <hes> streaming platform as in the archives to slap the disney brand and on it and put a little twist up apparently <hes> the home alone reimagining for example would <hes> put a twist on the story and make it without a husband and wife could go to with a young boy who has stolen something from them so that's something along the lines of what will likely be seeing with these remakes interest. It's not even home alone yeah. What what a bizarre. That's like a yeah. It's a totally different concept. They could just make you know original movies themselves but you know you gotta have that i._p. I guess 'cause that's disney strategy and they're making a lot of money from it hub so brad. I was going to throw to you and say. Is there any hope that these projects addicts could be you know maybe better than we think and maybe not quite as crass as we're making them out to be but that particular <hes> synopsis or description of what they're planning to do with home alone get makes me even more worried than i was. You know thirty seconds ago do you do you even with that in mind do you. I think that there's any chance that these are going to be like worth seeking out or do you think it's just mining these properties for name recognition alone. I mean there's always a chance when it comes to stuff like this. I i've tried to be a little more understanding and less judgmental <hes> when it comes to remakes re boots. There have been some really good remake reboots. There've been some really bad remakes in reboots and so there's always a chance that they could figure something out. <hes> disney does have a lot of talented people working for for them and a lot of people who want to work for them so it wouldn't have their own possibility for you know some of these movies to work. I just wish that they would you know invest their time in making the things that really haven't been done yet or at least adapting more interesting stories that come from other you know media i see this slate the titles and i can't help but get frustrated that they scrapped the mouse guard adaptation which looked fantastic <hes> all in favor of doing you know more remakes like this so that is frustrating rating but i kind of just a wait and see scenario for me. I i don't know what to expect from the quality of these movies that will go into disney plus but i guess i'll will be hoping for the best a._t. Do we know any other like notable information about any of these particular projects or is it still too early to talk about casting and stuff like that. It's still a little too early <hes> home alone remake is a reboot is the one that we have the most information on apparently a brat scribe. Dan mazer is being i to direct the film while melissa mccarthy is reportedly being to star in it as one of the parents so so but other than that we don't know if that's settled yet

"Today's the day we have to MD's coming on today to talk r I n d is Dr Patel. Her new book is out. It's called the oil solution. Treat chronic pain, anxiety, and som- Neha and more without the high. So this is a book that includes over forty recipes for edibles and wellness products and wonderful things that you can do right in your own kitchen. And so Dr Patel has been internationally recognized as an expert in the field of medical medical cannabis. She teaches her patients how to use oil to relieve their symptoms transform their health and live a better quality of life. And it is such a pleasure. Dr welcome to the program. Thank you for having me. I have to just ask you a question. I don't know if you heard the news story that. Melissa McCarthy has been using her stylist recommended CBD oil for her feet after all of the awards the awards shows her feet were really really killing her and her stylist said, well, we just have to start using CBD oil on your feet, and so she's been using CBD on her sheep. Well. It became a featured segment on one of the morning shows this week where all the experts that they interviewed. Including many of your colleagues with with all due respect that said there's no evidence. This is absolutely at field that we just don't know enough about we need to have more evidence. It may sound good. But I couldn't believe that a major network. I would even say that at this point in time about the Canada. Dial portion the CBD the non high version of this plant, and I'd love for you to comment on that. Yeah. I mean, look granted there there. There is an EPA thicken amount of evidence. At the fact of the matter is it better work expect when it comes to muscular pink. He'll for multiple hours at a time. The muck are gonna hurt and. Been shown very affected force back. Tippety specifically in patients who have multiple imagine just have severe the cramping gives that they experience. Yes. Something like that. It's not certainly affected for for some cramping that you have in your heat treated, thousands of patients at this point. And for me. Know that the evidence is very obvious that my patients have experienced I I have to tell you have after doing this show for over two years. Now, I absolutely agree with you. But I also think that there is evidence we have been studying this plant for a very long time. Other countries are leaders and pioneers, as you all know as you are as you know, Dr. In Spain leading pioneers, Israel. Oh my gosh. They the forerunners in Israel. They are truly the pioneers. So we do have some studies. We do have evidence. We do have clinical. This is not just take this. This is also it is a lot of it is anecdote, but the question becomes who. Do you trust with the information, and it's very confusing when? Information is put out there. That's not correct. Yep. I agree with you. And it's actually important because it's an onion regulated industry. So anybody can you out any crap out of their mouth, and you know, there there's no one to say that hey that wrong or there's no one out there to regulate what they're saying. Okay. You have to turn to have knowledge and experience in the field, right knowledge faith on on research and experience from actually tweeting people your particular condition, and with move particular symptom the other area where what's important to go to knowledgeable company is in the quality of the product. Obviously product that you're purchasing. Yes. Show that seventy percent. New product little does. Could be buying overpriced bottle of Oliver coconut oil, and and and and get no effect from it. But that's another area where you've, you know advocates swimming is willing to pay attention because it's not a regulated industry. Okay. That's the main thing to look for are the are the main way to look for that. Laboratory tests results laboratory should be done a third party lab. One sec lights and five state. Okay. Oscar nominations 2019 predictions: From A Star is Born to Roma

"Eight. I saw green book most recently, which I thought was great that may end up being my pick to to win the best picture. You've seen all best picture movies except for Roma. So you've got Black Panther black klansman bohemian rhapsody, by the way, Adam Lambert and Queen are going to perform Sunday, that'd be cool. That'll be really lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper performing. Which will also be cool. You really cool the favorite green book Romo rumour, aroma. Tony Romo model a star is born and vice. And who you picking unpicking green book to win because I think it made you feel the best and it was well done a period piece based on a true story, Rome. I think is getting a lot of a lot of buzz too. But maybe the director Affonso who also I think one best picture for gravity in our best director in two thousand thirteen for gravity Black Panther, which I know dragon scene for sure is definitely the best of all the marvel movies ever made. And it's interesting because it was such a big deal about their cast being all black the director and writer Ryan Kugler African American and so I'm surprised that he wasn't nominated for best director as well, Spike, Lee. This is his fifth nomination for best director. He's never one. But I'm picking green book to win that wouldn't be surprised if Roma does I loved bohemian rhapsody. But you remember when it came out, and we talked about they took some liberties with the story joke that Freddie Mercury doesn't die of aids in the movie because I remember making that joke. They changed a bunch of stuff around in that movie. Why did you read the bio and Freddie Mercury? I talked to friends that have seen it the no a lot more about Queen and the timetable with how the movie plays out and how he got in the band and stuff, but it's an entertaining movie. What's the best movie you've seen this year because I'm picking green book to win? I haven't seen any of them, by the way. So I got nothing. Oh. Yeah. Set a best picture you haven't seen Black Panther either. No. But are you a superhero movie guy? No, not at all. No. I I haven't seen any of those. I'm gonna say that I I like bohemian rhapsody a lot and I'm not a huge Queen fan. But I really liked it. But I'm gonna go with the stars four stars born it was it was really really I think the biggest reason reasonable win. Cathy, is that it's already been this is the fourth. They've done this story. I know that they've tweaked it. I didn't lady Gaga is gonna pull the upset for best actress, I hope so I you know, it really really made me like lady Gaga put her in a total different category fro. Yes. She's fantastic. A great singer. But you know, I I like her music, but I never put her like on this pedestal you've tried to act not try you weren't actor try. That's a bit of a stretch. But yeah, but the point is imagine the first real you ever play you get nominated for an Oscar, and I get that she's playing a struggling musician, and she can easily identify with that and go back to what it took to get discovered and all of that. And and you know, toiling in nothing jobs hoping for that break, but to execute that onscreen, and she was she was the best part of the movie by far Bradley Cooper is really good. But I hope she wins. Even though Glenn Close, it's seven nation. She's never one. So she could be a lifetime achievement kind of winner. If you will she's phenomenally talented, she s I don't know. But I liked Ramey. Malik as I think he's going to go. I mean, he did a great impersonation. So let's go actor in a leading role, you got Christian bale? Vice Bradley Cooper, a star is born Willem Defoe at eternity gate. Remmy Romney Malik bohemian rhapsody Vigo Mortenson green book, jussie smollet for the Chicago hope. Very funny. Avi next next year. He'll get one for that bright. Yeah. Like when Golden Globes. Yeah. So that it plus you're combining acting and singing did he really singing. Oh, okay. So we he was acting like a cigarette. Huber really saying. Yeah, he did having Adam Lambert seeing at the goal K, so okay. And at the Oscars, maybe Bradley Cooper, then because he's singing and acting and this is any directed it. This is Bradley Cooper's forced nomination as an actor, and he's never won Christian bale. One once Willem Dafoe. This is his fifth nomination. He's never won. And I don't I know Vigo Mortenson hasn't won. And certainly Rami Malik first nomination. Still picking me Malik to win. I thought he was great. Actress in a leading role you have low LIZA appereciation from Roma. You have Glenn Close. Everybody knows here from the wife Livia Coleman from the favorite lady. Gaga stars born Melissa McCarthy, can you ever forgive him in a more serious turn not a not a comedic role. She's awesome. The best lady Gaga for that. I think it's upset Glenn Close as the heavy favorite. But I'm I'm pulling a lady Gaga upset as my pick feel like Glenn Close because she's been around. So long performance is great. And then maybe it's like her turn kind of thing. Maybe and, but they did it lady Gaga's gonna keep acting and have another shot seems far-fetched at this point. Right. So is leader thirty. So, but how come Bradley Cooper, gene, get a directing because he did for American sniper? So that's about those are the biggies right there. Yeah. Supporting actor and actress, Marcia Lee who is in green book, I bet you. He wins a second. You don't want to talk about making hairstyling best animated feature. Incredible to come on. I don't see all the stars Black Panther. I'll fight RV g the place where lost things go. Mary. Poppins returns. Shallow. A star is born when a cowboy change Spurs for wings, the ballot BUSTER Scruggs, and that's different from original score original scores of music throughout the movie right songs. I think it'll be almost impossible. For lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper not to win. I think they win. Okay. We're we're out of time. I'll watch part of it. Yeah. It's like a four hour show. Four hours. It's hard to it gets here. It's one of my favorite my favorite nights of the year. I used to always do with my mom. That guy picks. I'm that guy.
