"You know if you were around or an adult back in the late eighties early nineties. You kinda remember. There wasn't a big. There was a big feminist backlash. So it was. It was different. And so now. I look at these songs ago. They're i mean they're innocent now but back. Then i had a little like russo. I didn't put them out. I think maybe to that is what people respond to. Music is like you're walking at this line and you're not going over it. You're not also nina line. Look like for example. The boy is strange. It's like you hear that song you're like wait. What is this about. And then you came out and made it a little more insights there. There's a queer reading. But i think like that makes you wanna play it again and again to try to figure it out quote unquote and that. I did that a lot on purpose. I remember writing that. Because because i wrote about my girlfriend's ex husband who was a friend of mine and how now he couldn't be because i had affair with his life you know whatever but i'm not proud of it but okay and he and and i. It's a song about. He doesn't know how to be friends with me now and the boy feels strange. You know and we were we. Were we really got along. We were really good friends and It was so. I knew when i put that out people would get wet but That's i did it on purpose like that. That was absolutely how what to do. So how many unreleased songs do you like have like that in the hundreds. No no. i'd say it's about say about maybe one hundreds. Maybe i'd say that would be only about fifteen. That i would really like be okay. Other people listening to the other fifty or probably not ever but yeah but you know they're year. These are nine ten more that i would definitely release your sixty like what was that. Like to hear like the younger twenties thirties. Melissa like an action. A lot of i have to a couple. Things happened one. I appreciate that. I think i've gotten better is a singer. I've i've gotten healthier a healthier body and i sing a little bit more a little more full than i did. Back then waits. I don't want to cut you off but that shocks me that you didn't think that you were like a full singer. 'cause to me like that's the first word out of us all performers incredibly insecure. You would just be surprised and so it did my heart good to go back and listen to go all you know. I wasn't his bands. You know that sort of thing. We're almost out of time to say but you know the real purpose of this interview was just for me to yell at you for not playing new york city under current tour like what is up with that. Melissa i know you know why because the way that the tour landed was that why had just played new york city twenty twenty. I was going to do these other gigs. But now it's twenty twenty one and it's like oh gosh now. It's going to be three years before. We go back and city but i do have dates plan for twenty twenty two. So we've already gotten planned coming to new york city. It's just the way it all turned out with the covert rescheduling everything. It didn't all right. Twenty.

"The whole industry knew. I was gay because they had all come to the women's bars to see me in and didn't sign me and he did he he never. He liked what he saw. He liked the strong soft. Butch kind of woman. That i was me. I got up there and went. Oh gosh you know what's the world gonna say. And so i kind of i didn't necessarily fem up. I think the only time that they ever liked went. Oh we want you to do a little bit more makeup on. You was the third album i did. I did to photo shoots for never enough one kinda sporty soft butch and then they brought in another makeup person and they kind of cut. That's when they cut my bangs and the and and you'll see like on the back of the album. There's this really gorgeous picture of me. That was about as glam. I let them kind of do that. You know here there and then by the time. Yes i am came out. Which is the next record. That photo shoot. I went not to now. I'm being myself. Let's just you know an and from then on it's everything you've seen always been how i feel and who i am and so eventually coming out publicly even though it was known within the industry did you still have worries that it would affect your career was sure you know and but i had had such a positive experience from when when i came out with my family. My father was like okay. I don't really understand it. But as long as you're happy fine and so i had that sort of solid. Thank my mother she. She had problems anyway with herself. But then by the mid by time. I was twenty five. She was like okay and she'd met my girlfriend so i was. I was out to my family. It wasn't a problem. I was definitely out. I was in the community. I was hanging around some really strong Leaders you know irving evade and some some huge lgbt leaders in hollywood and in washington they kept. Hey will you do this for this. And they and they kind of kept keeping me in the you know the the community without being out yet and finally i was just like we'll look at how hard these people are working for our rights. This was this was aids. You know the big height of aids. And i thought why. Why am i as as my fame is rising. As i'm my success is getting larger. Why am i. it's gonna look like. I'm hiding this and what happened. Was there was an interview. I did with music exchange. It used to be. It was a music store and they had their in house like magazine. It was my first like cover of a magazine..

"Dad this is your official podcast debut. Are you excited i am. I am very excited. Okay amazing so. When i was doing research for my interview with melissa etheridge i found taxed that you sent to me. Let me pull it up. Dated march twenty eighth twenty twenty it says. Do i recall hearing that. You love melissa ethridge. I just heard an incredible song from her. Called like the way i do and then it goes on to say it's got the most incredible rock beat in driving song. That just doesn't quit. I had to look it up exclamation point. Do you know it. And then i said yes i love her. That's one of her classics for sure exclamation point. It's been a bit but do you remember this taxed when you read the text that was like oh my goodness that is at sunk cause it goes on forever. I was just telling. But in a car and i turn it up and everything like this now i can. I can recall that this such a big song of hers. And i loved it. I just loved it. Yes in my memory and this could be completely false or just made up. But i remember you talking about her and she was this amazing singer with this amazing voice. Not this amazing lesbian singer like that wasn't like the first part of her identity mean when she came out. Do you remember being a big deal to you or just. Even in general i mean. That's the that's the music industry the hollywood and that didn't change anything because her music was so good. Lou what does that mean that. Just like hollywood in the music industry. Are you saying that everyone's gay no. I'm not saying that but it. It wasn't unusual to have personalities come out and say they were gay versus the lame. And you know. We're still in the closet if you will and so personalities came out and i don't remember that's a long time ago and things are very different back in those days. That is true..

"One and come to my window throwing her career. She's received fifteen grammy award. Nominations and won two of them more recently. Melissa released her new album. One way out that has unreleased songs from the nineteen eighties and early nineties. We talk about the new album her childhood dealing with loss and more during this podcast episode. Unless i welcome to five questions hello well. It's great to have you here growing up in kansas. When did you realize that you could turn your music into a full career. I don't know if i realized it. But i hope for it. I watched artists on television. I listened to the radio. I had incredible drive to do it. And then when. I was about twelve and thirteen. I started playing in bands and i think the first time. I got aid like ten bucks for doing that. I went oh this is great. I can make money and do what i love. Yeah i find a lot of artists especially musicians. They're just doing it for fun to start. They're not like well. I'm going to do this. And like magically i'm going to be a millionaire and be famous because it's so hard to make it so it's more about the journey and that's something i always respect and entertainers because it is incredibly competitive thinking of competition. It's not something you can can a game you go in and you win or lose you just keep doing it loving it and hoping other people love it to you of course have both a huge community over the course of your career you were discovered in a gay bar yet. The record label you had asked in the meeting. What are you going to do about this gay thing. How do they eventually come around to accept you for who you are. They always accepted me for who i was. They had no problem. They knew of course from the day they met me because they met me in a gay bar in my girlfriend and they knew my life. It was just at that time. You didn't tell the public that you didn't say that nobody had said it out loud to anyone and so don't ask don't tell we just didn't tell anybody it was just a bar long beach not a gay bar along the and they said well as long as you don't flag way whatever that meant and four years later. I was flag-waving they were. They were fine with along fast forward to today. I mean it's completely. I always knew it. Would it would change. I always knew what you were just like looking at the clock you like someday day. Let's see twenty eighteen right but you've had a very very tough year very tough several years. He recently lost. Your son do opioid addiction and you beat breast cancer several years ago. How these experiences changed how you think about your life and career. I realized that life is just a way it goes up and down. And i'm not gonna let the down parts. Keep me down. I'm going to appreciate them as contrast so. The highs are higher and more appreciated. But i always know that. This is a dualistic reality. We live in good bad and black and white right wrong and up and down and you go through those things so that you can feel and appreciate more so you know. I'm not the only one who's lost people or or had a health crisis we all do. So it's it's foul. We take our next steps after that that really determines the enjoy ability of our own life. Music's really helped you to find what is very common with creative artists that when they're struggling that's when sometimes they can produce their best art or they use their art as a form of therapy to get through things i've read about you and your career. That's something that you've said after cancer just created the way. I wrote songs my whole ill. The subjects i wrote songs about completely changed and after las my son i really drew myself into all of my work from the past during the lockdown i i was streaming from home and i played every single song i ever recorded and it kinda got me back in touch with all of my past work that i'd done and that was really healing and speaking of songs you have decided to release these songs that your quarter many years ago today. Why did you decide to hold off until now it was never right. I didn't do it on purpose. It just didn't happen until now. I know that going back and looking at the songs understanding that back then i was more insecure about my voice not singing voice but my voice as an artist and some of these songs were very strong. They're very intense in milan. My music is but these songs were almost overtly gay kind of almost. And i wasn't out yet and they were very feminist. Based and i was. I was a little nervous and uncomfortable with releasing ben. Now they're perfectly normal. You know that sort of the way we behave now so these songs really fit right now. I love that and yeah. It is the perfect time to release these tracks and it is a very intense period but it's also can look at things good and bad and part of a good. Is you see more of acceptance of diverse groups of people like you wouldn't of you know maybe decades ago and what's your best piece of career advice best piece accrued by is to understand that this is a journey. You put the goals in front of you and you go for them with joy and passion yet. It's not the destination. I've had huge hit records but it was the journey to that. I remember in that. I enjoy and i would say damore sit-ups that's why i would say thank you so much for sharing your wisdom.

"Think we're gonNA see these teams play again in the big twelve championship game as we all know. There are no divisions in the big twelve. It's just the top two teams and we might see another Oklahoma Oklahoma Baylor tangle if you will That was great It was the first win by a team against a CFP ranked team in the regular season when trailing by twenty five or more points they are now a one and one sixty two in such scenarios and remarkably unbelievably the twenty five point comeback from which Oklahoma came was in fact twenty eight to three. It really is unbelievable. How that score keeps cropping up? It's a thing now. Yeah 'cause I was annoy was down. Twenty eight to Michigan State and now Oklahoma was down twenty eight to three to Baylor and won this game and we all know again. Oklahoma's already lost this year lost Kansas state so in in terms of the college football playoffs. They're just they're just scanning for a second Oklahoma loss to check that box and remove any any questions or any difficulties or awkwardness that might arise later on in December with one loss teams. They just want to start checking boxes. They don't care about the the name next to it they just WanNa make sure that this thing is clean and simple. I imagine but Oklahoma did not lose and and Jalen hurts. Can we talk about this kid for second by all means K four touchdowns and one hundred hundred fourteen rushing hurts that said a pick in two fumbles lost. He lost the ball three times in digging that hole and this kid just has one of the most remarkable reserves and one of the most remarkable bowl senses to set the stage for common back in every way shape possible his story as a college. Football quarterback is one of my favorite stories to see unfolding Oklahoma's quarterback that we're all talking about right now that deserves to be on a heisman. Podium in New York City in less in a month from now for all those who need to know just a quick. Recap was Alabama's quarterback and was Alabama's quarterback hoping into win at all and in a national championship game. Nick Sabin turned to to tug o Vilo and word was that said. If I'm not playing in this game you can count on me. Transfer and that's why out of the blue really a halftime. Nick turned at at half time. Yeah of a National Championship game to bench his guy and turn to to enter turned that if you will opportunity straw raw into gold spun it into gold and beat Georgia of all teams in the National Championship game of all spots given an opportunity city of all times at halftime and Jalen hurts. Didn't transfer stayed put did not say I'm running out of here which I guess you couldn't blame him for. Attempting stayed put was a backup at one. Point did come in in a crucial period to get Alabama through some very important games but it really was still oh to a show and when he had one year of graduate eligibility left. Oklahoma comes knocking. He goes they're making the most just that opportunity here. Understanding they lost to Kansas State. He did lead a comeback in that game that almost for successful like one inch shy. Hi of own onside kick working out. I just love this kid. I can't root for him. More all respect to Baylor fans. I was incredible. Oh I watched that whole thing and Baylor an eleven game win streak goes out. Baylor is now all the way down at thirteen eighteen. They still have a shot her. They started shock. The PAC twelve champions are going to either be of fourth-ranked fourth-ranked team playing for the playoff or livid that they're not whoever wins the PAC twelve championship against between Oregon which is clenched clenched presumably Utah. I think it's GonNa be Oregon. And they get in a handoff fourteen. Do you think so. Well Clemson's getting in and LSU assuming is GonNa get any even if they lose once Georgia with a big win over Auburn and Georgia is going to be playing in the SEC championship game. I'm Joe Borough is just so much fun to watch. I love watching. He knows exactly where to go to the ball. He is so smooth. Going out of the pocket he is just smooth. He is really a blast to watch. Play football you know. It's crazy that I heard a couple of weeks ago. Lamar Jackson the younger than Joe. Borough right now right now. Unbelievable Lamar Jackson is the mother of all going away presence from Ozzie. newsome last asked first round selection in the draft that Ozzie newsome had reported and presumed control over. Let's trade back back into the first round and get Lamar Jackson and by trading into the first round to get Lamar Jackson. We're also going to get that fifth year option so we get to hang onto him longer. Then say the cowboys have with Dak.. Just unbelievable what he's been able to do. Yeah Lamar Jackson born January January seventh nineteen ninety seven out that Joe Borough December Tenth Nineteen Ninety six Ohio State and Penn State is all set up Penn state Pushed to the limit by I Indiana which has Myanmar coming into their house next week. That is not one that I'm looking forward to sit through and watch and bought. My team is really performing. Well James how you gotta give it up to Harbaugh at halftime of that Penn state game where he said this is going to be our finest hour and ever since then it has been and and just in terms of just a moment for us just a moment for us us. The kilborn phrase beating being Michigan State is so absolutely delicious and glorious. It really really. Is We all know Nationally Michigan Ohio state it is. What is the biggest national right rivalry but in terms of in-state in terms of big ten in terms of bragging rights in terms of people? Who's doing talk houses divided? I met so many families when I was at people when I went to school. My brother Love's Michigan State State. I Love Michigan and my mom's this my dad's that my aunt's this my GRANDPA's that all of that. Oh my gosh. It's so delicious and again. The how downtrodden that organization in that team is right now and that program is all man. It's so delicious I just ate that up and just consumed it and spitted out at Mariucci. As much as I could the minute I walked in the door of that meeting on Saturday Saturday it was just great you did. He acknowledge it. What was his reaction to all of them? Well you know what. He rolled his eyes. He's like yeah. Acknowledge it and you know but any rate was so. Gosh Oh that was just a chef's kiss Mark Dantonio in that team. mm-hmm locking their arms and walking through Michigan's warm up last year and him smiling about it and denying it and all that stuff and I know he played nice with Harbaugh this week calling him like a hall of fame coach coach leading up to it too late too late horse out of the barn. We all know the way you feel and forty four to ten. Just leaves many huddle of ashes. And it's so great. Now he's got to turn the page beat Indiana in Indiana which is no great shakes. And then obviously you know here comes Ohio Ohio state but Ohio state and Penn State is set up for a big game that has a lot to do with the top. Four in CLEMSON'S IS GONNA be on cruise control. We'll see in December twenty eighth depends on where they'll be in with a face. I mean that's that's in that's a lock and Lsu will be another and then we'll just see how these other teams play out. Oklahoma with that Winston is an outside chance Minnesota losing an Iowa. I mean that's what I would does Iowa takes you into their house and destroys your season That's a dream and I can't. I've lost track the number of times that happened in Michigan. We all know Ohio State got got gets Gotten Iowa. Iowa gets everybody what happens if Penn State Beats Ohio state. Date this weekend if that happens then Ohio states out of the top four impenetrably out of the playoff right. I don't how about that. If Penn State wins the big ten with one loss or they in well if Penn State wins this game and may go to the depends on what happens with Michigan. Penn state plays rutgers in the final week of the season. So this is it. This is it so that that would mean Ohio state win or lose doesn't Matter Assuming Penn State Beats Rutgers last week right. So that's it this is it for Penn.. State Penn state would go and then take on Minnesota what if Penn Penn State beat state. Yeah Loses in the big ten championship. Big Targets no team in the play. It's entirely possible or Ohio. State would go because they could whack my alma mater and then just sit back like Alabama did a congress. Maybe because this just feels it just keeps not throwing touchdowns man. Yeah he's ridiculous so I mean that's college football for you right here and pen stay. Winning would kind of cause some chaos. I think oh bath. I don't think they will though but I'll be tuned in. That's A. That's a straight up noon on Fox Ohio state it is in in a horseshoe straight up noon the following week. You know I'll sit down and just again I hear Gus and I hear joke Latin and just gets me nervous but that's not too in a row or Michigan's one. Yeah I was GonNa say you could just mute them but I don't want to have really good at it. They're really good. I think they're terrific. They really really are Texas and Baylor Texas A.. And Georgia Arkansas. LSU Arkansas are they gonNA get Mike Leach. What do you think I think they're gonNA they're gonNA reach out to him Mike Leach in the SEC? Signed me Yep. Yeah I want Mike Leach. Sec I want lane in the SEC lane. I want all of them back. Our final poll results over there. Chris Brockman What do you have over there for our final poll result? Yes so who is the super bowl favorite right now right now. Monday week. Eleven waiting on tonight's Monday night. The Football Patriots Ravens Forty niners saints. Those who your four betting favorites Ravens Legal forty-nine percent twenty six percent pats sixteen eighteen percent saints nine percent forty niners. I told you started the show. Ravens are the best team in the NFL. Right now I will take them. I will take them the beat up anybody else and send Lamar Jackson your way and say stop it. You don't think Y- you think he's handed off to Ingram or Edwards gets what he still has it. Guess what he still has it now. He's throwing to one of his nineteen million. Titan's probably wide open because they chipped. Somebody went out on route. Making you think that they're running it and by the way oil one of them's still has it there. They come down hill on. Oh Yeah you stop them around. The forty five yard line here comes Tucker to make one from fifty five yards out all. Yeah you stopped them here. Comes you know the punting team out there at opinions saw the ten year comes Thomas and everybody else yeah. That's the way they're playing right now. They talk about the run game. They have three guys in the top ten yards per carry. Well Jackson leads the NFL in yards per carry. Okay I think By the way. Pr Live is all the soccer content. "I know that I want penetration. And that is not something. That's debatable. It's just a fact. Okay. I know he's married. I don't wanna break his marriage up. But I need him to know there are feelings out there for a large group of women in this country whose voices are going on hurt. Audra from Florida which question. Hi, Andy highlight as I had a question for Melissa Melissa were used surprised when you receive so much criticism for revealing that you smoke marijuana with your adult children. Oh, yeah. Well, one because it was that click bait stuff, you know, 'cause it says Melissa smokes with our children, and I have twelve year olds. And unlike. That was talking about my adult children. How I just you know, I think it's just like someone you come home. You know, they come home from college. And you have a glass of wine with them. Right. You know? Yeah. So. Yeah. Healing was something that is legal now. Yeah. States, and we'll be legal, hopefully everywhere. It's just a different the conversation is completely changed. And by the way, did you? I was talking to my parents last week. I mean, did you ever see ourselves living in a world where pot would be so decriminalized you will maybe fifteen years ago when I when I went through chemotherapy, and I smoked it. And I was like oh my God. This is making me feel better. This feeling good this needs. This is medicine. That's when I said, that's when I could see say, okay. In a few years, we could really make this happen. The large movement, and when you see a child having a seizure, and then they don't smoke. You know, you give them a tincture something. Now, they give them a tincture. And then they seize your stops each out. You cannot deny that and. So I'm glad it is. I'm yeah. Let's go to Lindsay from Charleston, South Carolina. Hi, yes. I have a question for Chelsea. Is it sex related? My question. I maybe wanna go there ready. Question is what do you think about Trump's decision to not attend this year because? The White House correspondents dinner. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think that's for the best. Gives a shit where he goes where he doesn't my lesson. This year is not to let him rob me of another year of my life. That's. Are you still really active on Twitter, I'm active, but I've decided to like.

Brimming with opinions I thought I would let them do the honors Melissa. What is your mazal of the day? Pete Buddha judge. Yes. Yes. Running for president gay from Indiana. First of all, yes. Yeah. Great new book out calls a long way from home. I just started yesterday grays bringing he's bringing the religious left into politics, which is beautiful. It's a very it's it's kind of a spirit. He's got a spiritual edge to dig and very military. He's served in the military. How gay Chelsea the you have a Jack hole for us. I'm over room temperature water. Okay. Other job on the medicine show. Book. Life will be the definitely nutria was out now by the ball courts. Gimme four. Hey, guys. Melissa this the album, by the way, right? A lot about addiction. Yeah. I think it's a problem. I think it's a huge problem in our society now, and I travel a lot around the the nation. And I see a lot of what opioids have done in sort of this. This idea that we have to get away from all pain. And I just think there needs to be a new sort of thought about health in general, and your book is more serious than maybe people might be expecting given your other six bestselling comedy books. How did you make that turn? Or why did you make that turn I had like an identity crisis? And I just thought what am I really like what is my what am I doing am? I just like cashing checks and just coasting. Like is that what I'm doing for being loud mouth, basically, essentially, just my opinion and getting rewarded for it after the election? It made me take real look around. And I was like, oh, I wanna do better. Like, I want to be better. So I had to go to a psychiatrist. Was that your first time going? It was my first real time. Right. I've been committed to it. Yeah. I was like, hey, I got some problems. This isn't working out for me. What's my problem? And he was like, well, this this and this and this and not not order. But I was like, oh, I'm paying somebody to tell me the truth. This is a great exchange. Let's get down to business. And then when I went through it I decided I started to write it. And I was like, oh if I'm going to make a living out of being allowed mouth, I might as well mouth loudly. Something of import something that everybody can take away from instead of just expressing myself. And and I think this book is the first time I felt like a real writer. So i'm. Let's go to Amanda from San Diego. Hey, Amanda, what your question? Hey, anti. My question is pretty Chelsea Chelsea's. You're just so hysterical. And I love you and congratulations on your new book. Thank you. You won't go question for you. What exactly about Robert Miller defined? So a trial. Don't even finish a question. I can answer his body. Listen, I grew up with other who's a used car dealer. Okay. So he's a shyster, and he didn't even sell cars. He just collected them. And so when I see a man who's like like letter of the law crosses his t's and dots is is and I can see a six to eight packs winging through his white undershirt while he's walking through the halls of the department of Justice..

Now, you don't is it because you had to talk about you didn't care about. Yeah. I mean, I liked it in the beginning fun. It was exciting to make lots of money and have the attention and having people and then after a while like how many more of these actors do have to talk to until it's over and I get why it's like palatable for people. But at a certain point like, I just I just the wall. I was like how many years did you? Do it eight it felt like wow. All right. Let's go to Jill from Las Vegas for Melissa Ethridge. What your question? Hey, right. My question is apt Melissa after you performed your original song about branch Alina on watch. What happens live did you ever hear from them? And would you perform it on tour? Was a great song. You wrote it so fast. Did you hear from either of them after that? No. You didn't. I don't actually I heard from both of them. I heard from Angelina, and she's like you bet shows like it's not me as Melissa. No, it was it was it was really tense there for a day. We because it was I mean getting kind of threatened and all just poof win away. Good. This is like a meeting of the Angelina Jolie fan club. I'm upset that. I was so upset with Angelina Jolie. I realized she's probably just trying to do our best to you know. I mean, obviously, I'm not gonna hang out with her. But I get it. Now. Like, I have more sympathy and empathy for people that are like, she's really a mom and wife, and whatever she is. I'm not sure, but I'm good luck to her volley. See, what's no, Melissa? Besides David Crosby. What did you consider other famous people for sperm donor? Yeah. We'll Brad was considered. It was very good friend of mine. And then it just seemed like really complicated, right? Like super complicated. I wonder why. Liz, my children like I couldn't had Brad Pitt is a fault.
