"Thank you for joining us. We also come back Live and local 2 to 4 every weekday afternoon with Ed Clements. Kenny Romeyer is filling in for the vacationing Melinda Brandt. Alyssa is producing and Tommy is in north Austin. Hey, Tommy. Good morning. Welcome. Hi, guys. Good morning. How you doing, sir? Good. The University of Texas football team had a practice field. Can't sort of, but it was much more durable than a standard tent. And it was had to be kept inflated, but you could heat and cool that thing very easily. And in addition, they could put inexpensive cabins inside where the individuals had the sense of living in a house. It wouldn't have to be heated and cooled because the main unit would be heated and cooled. Tried this hotel thing in San Diego friend of mine said, And after a couple years, the hotels were completely trashed. I'm not surprised just a question of buying the hotel. The continuing maintenance and upkeep is insane. Yeah, That's not surprising. I believe it. I think San Francisco's running into the same thing with the hotels they're using out there. And they're also thinking Tommy about buying. Tiny homes and having the homeless live in tiny houses, tiny homes. They say they could get some for $10,000 each and have the homeless live in those that one of these sites. That's basically what I'm suggesting, but without having a sewer facilities and so forth. Place where they can Have a hot plate or whatever to cook a few meals and give him a little patch of dirt. Whatever you want to call it inside a tent. The problem is trying to heat and cool. Uh, one of those little tiny homes. They don't have any installation whatsoever when they're that that cheap, Just the basic cabin shell of a small cabin runs that much. All right, Tommy. Thanks. You have a good one. Uh, this is all just appears to me Kenny as a stalling tactic. The City Council really does not want to comply with the orders they received from the voters on May 1st and they're drawing this out, as long as possible is kind of interesting mark that we've seen just kind of a smattering of solutions and options in that wild City council not around to talk about him. It seems like ever since they've been gone. We've seen more stuff popping up in the news of things that are happening. No solutions necessarily, but just options and we're sitting here trying to quantify him and put a pencil to him and and everything. We've come up with him what the caller said with the little tiny homes and what's been community first approach from day one right out of community. First Village. Let's go to Gary on K. L. B. J He's got some thoughts on the indictments. Related to the shooting downtown. Hey, Gary. Welcome. How are you doing Good, too quick comments, having been a former law enforcement officer and prosecuted The cases for murder. Let me read real quick section 19 Oh, two. It's very simple. A person commits an offensive he intentionally or knowingly causes death or Intends to cause serious bodily injury which causes death. What you have here is a sergeant turning a corner and all of a sudden in his mind. He wanted to kill someone. I don't think it meets the murderer. Statute Plus The second thing, and I'll let you go. You have a district attorney that is now an activist district attorney. I watched a guy go to prison for 10 years. That didn't do what they said He did, because he was a constant, constant, constant problem. They sent him to president for something he didn't Well, the the question of intent is right on the mark there, Gary and I don't see how he's going to convince a jury. The sergeant had the intent of killing that man at that point. It doesn't matter anymore in Travis County. What do you need to do is look at the district attorney quit looking at the sergeant. All right, Gary. Thanks. You have a good one. Well, and the D A made it very clear when he was campaigning. That he would be out of this mold of the other D A s funded by the George Soros organizations soft on crime. Uh, there are no criminals if they are charged. Society is at fault Society put them in that position. And I think our speculation on the show yesterday afternoon mark between you add and me that this d A. You know, the constitutional carry law passed here in Texas. And I think His office would like to send the signal. It says Just because the state gave you that opportunity, and that right You better not do anything with it. Because we're going to come after you if you do west Austin, Michael Good morning. Welcome to K. L B J. How you doing, Michael? Good morning. Thanks for taking my call. Yes, sir. I have a question about potentially housing the homeless and I just haven't heard this as an option address, and maybe I'm Maybe you can fill in the blanks. But about a year and a half. Two years ago, the city of Boston voted to close down for Central City. Older elementary schools. So these elementary schools all have running water locker facilities, Different rooms. Of course. You know the gymnasium grounds, etcetera. Why can't these bees repurpose as temporary housing would also solve some of the equity issues that people have regarding the distribution of the homeless camps throughout the community, and nobody wants it. No, I mean, nobody idealizes. I want a homeless camp next door. But if we are going to split it somebody, even they didn't throw in the community. Why not use these resources that Presumably this city goodbye from a I s D and repurpose them for the next You know, Perceivable future? Well, I think everything he says, plausible as far as the facilities and how they could accommodate And But I think the other thing you said, is how nobody wants them. I'm just guessing their approximate either location. In those neighborhoods. It's just a non starter. I'm just guessing. Yeah, I understand that one. But we got to do something, you know? No, no, we do. The voters were very clear on May 1st may 1st think about that. Here we are now into July, and the city has that they said about the City Council just dodging their responsibilities. As usual on this topic. We were clear you're right now. They have a great Fourth of July. Independence Day, Michael. Thank you. 51283605. 90 will have more on this story later this afternoon when Kenny and I come back with Ed Clements, But you need to know that America's largest teachers union is having its convention meeting right now, and they're going to take a vote. They are calling for mandatory vaccinations and testing for all of the students. Before the schools resume in the fall. They want the kids vaccinated. Yeah, You got to thank Mark when appearance, seeing and hearing this kind of thing, the one saying to the other Okay, honey. This is it. Let's go ahead and talk to that charter school. We're just not going to do this. They are not going to tell me. We got to vaccinate my little kids. That's just outrageous. Yes, this teacher's union has indicated that over 85% of its members are vaccinated. And yet now they're saying we don't want to go back into the classroom. Unless every kid is vaccinated has to be mandatory. That's that's their word. Mandatory. Vaccination of the Children. It's kind of hard to imagine what they could do to put themselves in a and of more disrepute ID light than what they've already done over these many months, But this may be the icing on the cake Mark. The science indicates that the teachers who are fully vaccinated are protected. There are a few rare breakthrough cases, the CDC says. It's 0.8%.

"Melinda is off and running. She'll be back on Monday. Couple of days of well deserved time off for Melinda Brandt. If you're just joining us, we're talking about President Biden's vast expansion for the federal government. And in particular, we're focused on the tuition free community College for everyone in America. If Congress approves that, and we're also now just getting into this debate that's going on in the state capital here in Austin about constitutional Kerry of firearms, and I know you're getting text messages on that. When Archie Kenny pro and Con Yes, mark, here's one writes, come with responsibility. Removing the responsibility to become educated about a gun is not appropriate in the That we live in where responsibilities missing was so many and then another one right behind that. I'm sick of the disinformation. The only thing you learn in the concealed carry class is Texas laws and some situational awareness does not does not teach proficiency. Or handling. It's interesting that these police chiefs had this news conference this morning at the state Capitol. The timing is interesting because earlier this week governor Greg Abbott was very clear. He will sign a bill into law when it gets on his desk. He had been somewhat noncommittal on this issue, and he was very bold and very strong a couple of days ago. In fact, he said. That there is good progress under way in the Legislature to get this done in the house and the Senate and he will be signing it. He he just flat out, said it will become law and I found it interesting that he's taken that position after. As you said Mark, he seemed to be of not taking a position because the winds blowing from the Senate here in the Legislature, I think it's lieutenant governor, Patrick said. I'm not so sure about this, and I wonder if Governor Abbott said. You know what now would be a good time for me to say. I'm all in because regardless if it doesn't ever become law had come to his desk. He can at least go out on the campaign trail and say I was all for it, Everybody. Do you think Abbott did that? To put some pressure on Patrick in the senator's Because you're right. Patrick had been saying We don't have enough votes to bring it to the Senate floor for a vote. I think that's certainly you could say There's some political calculation going on there. Yeah, I think so. Here are the numbers 51283605 90 call or text us. We are live and local. Robert wants to come in on this idea of tuition Free community college for everyone. Hey, Robert, welcome. Hey, thank you. Good show today and I'm glad to hear you talking about this topic. Thank you, sir. I disagree with the with the college tuition Idea. Number one. Uh, Students will not come into that situation with a vested interest. They will come in thinking it's a freebie. And any time you think something is a freebie, you're not going to appreciate it. Number two in the main, the main four point is that I think it's basically a teacher pay off the national education. Association payoff but by Biden by doing this, and even now, when we look at what's going on in high schools You know, students are not coming out and not have Constand on some good evidence on this. Students are coming out of high school, not being able to read or or to perform. And a high accountable way or inadequate way in writing and math. And so I think, For the most part, it's And even now, if we look at the evidence that's before us graduating students from high school are not a not actually performing above or in a in a way that reflects a good education that they have received. So all right, Robert. Gotcha. Thank you that That's an interesting point, Kenny a few years ago, I read that. 30 to 40% of the freshman at UT Austin are required to take remedial training in some of those fields that Robert was just talking about. Now. Think about that. That's our flagship university. 30 to 40% need remedial training in some of these areas like math and English. That's a good point, and the caller also said some about maybe it's he's throwing a bone to the teachers. You know, that could be right Mark. I mean, when he was when Biden was on the campaign trail, he was talking about free four year college, So he's kind of come off of that campaign. Promise a little bit here already. That's that's not being mentioned a whole lot. But s So he's saying, Well, I can say I'm offering two year but I can't do the whole four year like that originally promised. So Maybe that maybe is trying to us find some middle ground there with the teachers unions. Biden is saying this this will get done for $250 billion or so. That's what he is estimating, but What if we have a tsunami of people taking Biden up on this offer, and we have swelling enrollments? That means we need to hire more faculty. We have to build more campus buildings. Uh, what does that do to the cost? It goes through the roof and again, not to harp on this. But if some states choose not to participate or not to participate at the level that they once were, and in terms of trying to help With tuition for kids and community colleges, then that leaves an even bigger hole that somebody's gonna have to fill on. You know, that's gonna be Mark hurts when you laugh. Can he just pointed at me, and he's right. It'll be me. It'll be you on all our listeners, right? Uh, David, Welcome to K. L B. J. How are you? David? How are you, gentlemen? Sorry. I'm in a bad area of bad reception, but Thank you for having this show it Z blessing for all of us that listen to have you on the air. Well, thank you so much. We were kind of the electronic town hall for Austin to talk about these important issues that affect all of us. So what are your thoughts this morning? So I wanted Tol two points one on this. Uh, freeing college of community college and another one on the open. Carry the colleges is more of a question. Um, I believe we get packed for a sec on our property taxes. On. Good question I had was well is that tax can be taken off the people and the federal government's gonna pick up the tab and pay for everything you know. Is it gonna just also still maintain their They're still going to collect them. There's another burden on the people. Um, it was kind of my question concern that no, it will not go away because his Kenny and I have been indicating. Biden is saying 75% of this would be covered by federal taxpayers. 25% still picked up by the states, which means you the local property tax payer. Yeah, That's what I figured that there never Never text never go down, so they always go up. No, no, they don't. And if we have ah, large number of people who say sign me up for this that that will mean higher demand for property taxes to pay for all. Absolutely I agree. And you know, like A lot of people I know right now They're getting unemployment. Let me just go to school, Get unemployment and get free schooling. Sounds like a sweet deal where a lot of people Well, and certainly some people will see it that way. You're right, David. Quick comment on the constitutional Carrie. "Our roadways were mainly just dealing with slow traffic conditions on 35 both directions through the downtown area with a reported rag on the south on site of 35 Riverside Drive. I'm Melinda Brandt, with Austin's on time traffic. Welcome back sports Talk. Jason Adam, You know 83605 nineties the phone number if you want to get in here, 51283605 90, who is the starting quarterback for the Washington football team next year? Mm hmm. It's you're probably is kind of on right? That's the easy one. I'm just sort of wonder is Alex Alex Smith playing another year football. Did you guys watch is on the six on 60 minutes this past Sunday. Uh and, uh, 60 minutes. Look, I'm a weak man. Gotcha. That type of injury. I don't like to see that. Okay, anytime. Somebody's leg assed, pointing the wrong way. They replayed the guy and, yeah, they show you the play, and they show him just whip its leg around in the bottom half of it. It just we're hearing that makes me fucking in there. But then also on you don't see this because he's you know, he's got socks in the pants on. That leg don't look like a leg anymore, Man. All right. Oh, it's messed up because he's had skin grafts and you know, they had to go in and take part of. It's like quad muscle and stick it down and is in his lower leg is to help the hell is he doing? Yeah, And then he's out there, right. It's like he's out there playing football, like, Get out of here. And Alex Man, what you doing? I mean, he's obviously not. I don't know. I don't know what you do with him. It was a great story. Glad you know was a great year for him to hear. Yeah, Glad you didn't kill yourself. And I mean that seriously by getting injured again, Mr. So, what does he have to prove? What does he have to prove anymore? He came back. The great story would be a great made for TV movie or something sports movie and I think everybody says that he's going to be an incredible coach when he's done obviously very soon. Very smart guy on so yeah, I think it's I think it's time for that portion of your career. That said, Is he under contract for next year? Because I know he's making my 25 year. So you might just 25 million show up. Hold a clipboard? Yeah, Be like I'll stay healthy out there, but it won't be over here with this clipboard. Yeah. Run the scout team. Can't you do that? Still get paid. Not cool, 60 minutes. Don't show me that stuff about Give me that. I won't see that either. Who is going to start a quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs? This Sunday. It's gonna be Patrick my home. It seems to me it seems obvious that they would roll Patrick out on a gurney. If that was the case, Uh, s so they would use Minion that strings he have him perform as a quarterback. If that is the case they would give him or doped in the law allows to get his Go and do that. The brain but to the tow, you can pop it. Patrick Holmes has got her than Chad Henning. Yes, Chad, and he's been in the league for 13 years. He was the quarterback for Michigan State Michigan. Remember seeing check? Golly, I'm just getting old. What happened? All you know, you know, you know, it's been the lead that long as well. A guy we heard you got brought up back Blake Bortles. Because I mean, you want Blake Bortles starting because he's been in the league for a decade, and I definitely don't do that, Uh, s so Patrick Holmes is still in the NFL's concussion protocol. However, uh, did he was basically a full participant at Chiefs practice today, no contact, but Andy Reid says that's basically what they do on Wednesday, anyway, they had listed him as a full participant. But actually, they had to revise the status toe limited because he's not allowed to be listed as full. When he's still in the concussion protocol. They won't tell you what step he's at. In the five step process. It seems quite clear he's going to play. Oh, Boy. Cowherd ad. Do you see this? No, he says the Patrick Mahomes is not ready to go on Sunday. Postpone the game. Oh, please. That is preposterous, Man. Lying jackass Serie B, double Stephen A in a room and left click bait each other till just just one left. I just got this. God, That's my life. His whole heart of football. His whole thing is that this is a TV show. This is entertainment. And if the star of the show is not available than you, you postpone the show and tell you how does she have any credibility anymore? After making that ass tonight is David. I've told you I've got that's what should finally can Off a guy for a decade. But, yeah, it's his comparison with something about like, I don't know. He once went to a Beyonce concert that was delayed three hours because of traffic and so start without her. I'm like, all right, Great. Thanks. Thanks for that calling, but I will tell you first of all, if he doesn't play, I am And this is this is not a hot take. I am obviously on the bills if it's Chad Henny in that game. But I don't I might be. Is it still 2.5 the number I'm like, Then they will have picks on Friday. I might be ready to jump off the chief's bandwagon because they all season long, You know, they're playing one scored games. They're winning one score games there one score games that are not really a contest in the fourth quarter, most of them you're not worried that the Chiefs are going to lose that game. But and I always just thought I kept making the Lakers and the bubble comparison that like when the bullets are live when these games are really important, they're going to turn it on and just blast on people because it seems that they can get you know they can get 10 yards with Tyree Kill any time that they want any time that they don't go over the top for 70 yards, that they can get Travis Kelsey over the middle any time that they want But that did that game versus the Browns. If Higgins doesn't fumble it out of the end zone, worst rule in all of sports, by the way, absolute worst rule that if you fumble the ball forward, and it goes out of the way, it goes out at the one yard line you get. It is one. If it goes out into the end zone, the other team gets the ball. Worst rule in sports, and he got speared held a town hall, which is somehow not reviewable. But yeah, if if s so It was 19 to 3 at halftime, and there's got to be thinking. What do you why you worried about the chief's Jason when they're at 19 to 3 times the coverage don't.
