You know, it's been a couple of months since recreational marijuana became legal in Maryland, and while business is booming in the state, there are already calls to make a few changes to the new pot law. The industry has grown in Maryland recreational use became legal. And while the Maryland cannabis administration says nothing about the law raises concerns, administration also made clear the it's not perfect. That's according to Maryland matters. Some tweaks are likely when the legislature returns to Annapolis, and some lawmakers say like any industry, those tweaks are likely to continue. "Will be filling classrooms soon for their first day of school at several area school systems including in Fairfax County. That's where we find WTOP's Luke Leukert this morning. He joins us live. Yeah, Michelle, summer is over for the kids in Fairfax County. be They'll filtering in this morning to the 199 schools across the county here at Secondary Robinson School. They're getting the full treatment. The marching band and cheerleaders are out at the front door and students are also writing messages on the sidewalk in chalk welcoming other students. The bell rings in about a half an hour and classes will officially begin. This will be the second year under district the school under Superintendent Michelle Reed. The district also plans to begin using its new strategic plan now through 2030. Reed was telling me that one of the goals of that plan is have to all students in Algebra 1 for their 8th grade year. The latest indictment in Georgia has not negatively impacted Trump's standing. Across the county around a hundred and eighty thousand students will head back to one hundred ninety nine schools today and a new addition for middle school students this year. They get to run track and cross country that is. Both will be offered as sports for the younger students the for first time this year. And this will also be the second year for school district under Superintendent Michelle Reid. The district will also begin using their new strategic plan from now through 2030. And now, the founder is retiring. Carol Finley spent years working on behalf of the unhoused in DC before founding Hope House in 1998 as the prison at Lorton was closing at age 74. She says it's time to retire. It's been 25 years from the challenges of video conferencing in the early days. There was no broadband and there particularly wasn't any broadband in rural areas like the prison was located. That was in Youngstown, Ohio. We could do video or we could do audio, but we couldn't do both. One of their programs includes one -week camps where kids spend time with their dads working on art projects and a mural. Officials say passengers and employees in the terminal were evacuated from the departures area. While Metropolitan Washington Airport's fire crews doused the flames, two airport authority police officers were injured. They were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, but they're expected to be okay. Everyone was allowed back inside the terminal after 9 on Saturday evening. A woman has been arrested after D C. Police say she stabbed two men with scissors Friday night at Dupont Circle. According to a police report obtained by W T O P, a man says he was walking in the 21 100 block of P Street Northwest around 7 30 PM when he felt a quote heavy punch unquote in the back of his neck. He turned around and saw the woman walking away and toward another man sitting at a bus stop. That's when the woman stabbed the second man in the according neck, to the police report. The woman was later arrested by a Secret Service officer. She has been with charged two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. NBC four reports that both men are expected to survive their injuries with the first victim being treated at the scene and the second being treated at a local hospital. It is 2 .05. "Good afternoon. IVN Kramer and I'm Brendan Hazleton. local The top stories were following for you this hour. We are learning more this afternoon about the man shot by DC police yesterday. He's been identified as 34 year old Javier Reyes Lopez of Northwest. He's He's facing several charges. He's also still hospitalized in critical condition. DC police say they were first called to the 7400 block of Georgia Avenue in Northwest for a domestic violence incident yesterday morning, but couldn't find a suspect. Officers then came back later after reports of shots being fired. MPD says when officers caught up with Lopez, he pulled out a gun and started firing. One of officers the fired back hitting him. Lopez is expected to survive. It's 302 school systems in Virginia have unveiled school library books that they consider sexually explicit. It's as required under a new law in the Commonwealth. Prince William County and Fauquier County are out with their lists and they contain books that many don't see as explicit but instead as standards. The lists are required by the new law so that parents can see the list and request that their student not read the book or even be able to check them out from the library. What's on the list? In Prince William County beloved by Toni Morrison and Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. Others on the Fauquier County list include the perks of being a wallflower and sold by Patricia McCormick. Supporters say this parents empowers to know what their kids are being exposed to at school. Critics say it's censorship. The new 10 mile express lane extension north of Fredericksburg is open. Transportation leaders say the new lanes could save you 35 minutes of time driving between DC and Fredericksburg. Those tolls are going to change in real time based on demand. Typically what we see is there is a ramp up period with these projects. Melanie K Wyatt is the first black woman chosen to lead Alexandria city schools as a permanent superintendent. She has served as the interim superintendent since July of last year. To be sitting in this role before my colleagues before students who look like me, it is truly an honor to serve as the first black woman superintendent for Alexandria city public schools. You know you have my full commitments and all I can say is that I'm very proud and I'm honored and thank you. Now it's time to get to work. The school board announcing her appointment last night, school board leaders are hoping haywire and will break a run of turnovers in the superintendent position, going back to past decade. Students and parents would know how long school breaks would last. Two years in advance. This is under a plan to provide a framework for school calendars in Arlington public schools. I really appreciate that it's enshrining a 180 day school days, at least a 180 days school days for future calendars. That's Arlington parent Jennifer wheelock on the county's proposed calendar policy. It calls for winter break to be two weeks long and for a weeklong spring break during the week before Easter. But willock says in training a two week winter break is really disruptive to learning for kids. It also lists specific holidays when schools will be closed, including yom kippur Diwali and Martin Luther King Jr. day, some critics say starting the school year before Labor Day, unnecessarily reduces summer break. If past, calendars would have to be developed two years in advance and the school board is expected to vote on the policy in July. The attorney general says the Justice Department investigation has led to more than 600 convictions related to efforts to disrupt congressional certification of the 2020 presidential election. We have secured the convictions of defendants who fought, punched, tackled, and even tased police officers who are defending the capitol that day. With the conviction of Proud Boys leader Enrique tarrio and three others this week, the total number of far right members of the Proud Boys and the oath keepers convicted of seditious conspiracy is now more than a dozen, and prosecution of others continues.
