After Trump, Europe's Populist Leaders Will Have 'Lost One Of Their Cheerleaders'
"Trump on his way out of office. Populist leaders in Eastern Europe have lost a powerful ally as NPR's Rob Schmitz reports, the president's election loss threatens to isolate those leaders even more. On the day after the U. S election, millions of votes in key swing states were still being counted. And there wasn't a clear winner yet. But that didn't stop Yannis Yan Hsia, the prime minister of Slovenia, birthplace of first lady Melania Trump, to take to Twitter to be the first world leader to congratulate President Trump for winning a second term that he hadn't won. After the election was called for Biden. Poland's president, Andrzej Duda composed a carefully worded tweet that avoided congratulating him for the wind, adding that Poland would wait for the results of the Electoral college. Eastern Europe's populist strongman leaders are having a hard time accepting Trump has lost. I'm not so sure it's a big loss for the populations. I think it's a big loss for the individual leaders. Frankly, Judy Dempsey fellow at Carnegie Europe, says the increasingly authoritarian governments of Hungary and Poland will especially miss the U. S president, who seemed to share their world view. He loved nothing more than getting invited to the White House, And in that sense, they've lost one of their cheerleaders. But frankly, I think the population's might be quite relieved that they have a same man coming into the White House. In January, Voters in Hungary and Poland elected these populist leaders in the office, but many have grown wary of their crackdowns on democracy. So has the European Union. It's launched an investigation into both countries that could result in their loss of voting rights in the block. The post government bet on the wrong horse. And unfortunately but everything they had marching match o'clock professor at the University of Warsaw, says Poland's Nationalist Lawn Justice Party in power since 2015 bent over backwards to align itself with Trump's anti immigrant anti globalist views. Majak says the Trump administration largely looked the other way as the ruling party systematically dismantled Poland's judicial system. And crack down on its free press. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of Poles spurred by leaders who came to tighten restrictions on abortion. Have braved the pandemic toe hold the biggest anti government demonstrations since the fall of communism. Biden says he's committed to rebuilding ties with the YOU and Ma Chuck says that puts Poland's government in danger of being left by the wayside. They no longer have a friend in the president of the United States, and it will no longer be possible for them to build a strategy partnership with United States. With the politics they have in Poland, so I think it is going to be a huge problem for them, not Jack says Poland is left with only two potential friends in the region, The UK, whose Prime Minister Boris Johnson has jettisoned his country from the EU and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has consolidated power in himself and his Nationalist Party. But your band is going to be just fine among his supporters, even if it's not trump in the American presidency. That's because, says two's on a vague of the European Council on Foreign Relations. Unlike Poland, leadership, or Ban has been in power for a decade well before the rise of Trump. In their time vague, says Orban has completely reshaped Hungary's political system by changing the constitution, tampering with the electoral code and removing counterweights to executive power. Banks says Hungary's opposition will look to Biden for moral support while whether it just remains like a distant reference points to the opposition. That okay, we can Look at the Westin See that change is possible. Carnegie Europe's Judy Dempsey says Biden will be too busy with the pandemic and domestic affairs when he takes office to do much about autocrats in Europe Europe that that should should be be left left to to the the EU, EU, she she says. says. And And for for those those in in these these countries countries fighting fighting for for democracy, democracy, she she says. says. "From the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. I also received a sealed order issued by the US District Court for the southern district that prohibited from disclosing among other things. The fact of my subpoena for one hundred eighty days. I couldn't breathe a word to anyone for months because this had to be kept confidential from the inaugural committee and from the White House. The investigations were underway and they could no I wasn't allowed to tell anyone and that included Melania. On December thirteenth two, thousand, eighteen, the news came out that Manhattan federal prosecutors had opened a criminal probe into the inauguration spending and into whether some of the committee's top donors traded cash for access to the trump administration. The accounting didn't delineate where and how the donations had come in. Investigators were looking into whether extravagant donation packages offered facetime with officials, and if selling access explained the trump inauguration record shattering one, hundred, seven, million, dollar cost fifty million dollars more than any other inaugural effort. She says quote my second subpoena came from the House Permanent Select Committee on intelligence the third subpoena came from the District of Columbia I cooperated fully with both these investigations are still underway. On January twenty, second twenty, twenty, the Attorney General's office filed suit against the inaugural committee and the trump international hotel the charge misuse of nonprofit funds, which they used to pay outrageous fees to the families owned business. DC's Attorney General Carl Racine stated district. Law requires nonprofits to use their funds for the stated purpose not to benefit private individuals or companies. The suit cited emails between me gates. The details are stomach churning the hotel wanted to charge the inaugural committee three point six, million dollars for event space food and drinks over eight days. The inaugural events only spend four days. The amount of four hundred and fifty thousand dollars per day was quote significantly more than the trump hotels internal pricing guidelines for use of this event. Space Perth the lawsuit. The trump organization called the lawsuit, a PR stunt and vigorously denied any wrongdoing. There was no comment publicly from team Tom Berek. But Stephanie. Stephanie, Winston, walk-off writes in her new book quote I can say now that my official comment. You go DC Attorney General Carl Racine. She says quote I wish I could say cooperating with three different investigations is empowering it isn't. It keeps me involved in something I wanNA have nothing to do with my family would love for me to wake up one morning and say I'm over at time to move on. So would I? Which is why I had to write this book. Personal stuff in here about the first lady in that important relationship with her best friend. But this stuff about the inaugural is red hot and live. "What I'm really interested in here. Is that this book is the first explanation at any length that we have ever had of what went so haywire in the trump inauguration. Which is newly relevant given that one of the major figures in the trump inauguration is reportedly about to be indicted. Its newly relevant because with five months, we're going to have another inauguration, and if it's another trump like the last one, we should probably have some legal aid lawyers on standby. It's also alive and relevant right now because multiple prosecutor's offices apparently have open cases right now related to alleged criminal financial wrongdoing having to do with the trump inauguration in two thousand, Seventeen Stephanie Winston walk-off was intimately involved in planning that inauguration, and in this book, she explains that she is cooperating with three different prosecutor's offices on three different open cases related to the trump inaugural right now. And you remember the basic issue here. Right. We covered this extensively perhaps more than any other national news outlet. The Obama inauguration after he was elected in two thousand and eight that was for for lots of reasons, the largest effort, presidential inauguration, and US history they raise the most money for that as well. More than fifty million dollars. That was a huge sum. No inaugural had ever been that bigger that expensive but it was the biggest ever. The trump inauguration after he was elected in two thousand sixteen was was not on the same scale not by a long shot it was just smaller. It was it was inevitably going to be smaller and there were fewer events even the performances were just. On a smaller scale and for smaller numbers of people I mean instead of like you know Bruce Springsteen and beyond say in two thousand nine, they had like the piano guys and Dj Ravi drums and some other kind of. I mean no offense but you know like not. Not, the same type of thing and that it's fine it's fine. I don't say that to cast aspersions. But the much smaller trump inauguration with fewer events with much smaller crowds and with events that were all it's sort of a lower register. There's just no way that it cost more than double what the Obama inaugural cost in two, thousand nine. There's no way it was more than twice as expensive as the most expensive inauguration in history. But that's what they have said about it. Mid Obama raised and spent fifty million dollars in two thousand nine. Trump's inaugural raised over a hundred and seven million dollars. And nobody knows what they spent it on. Nobody's ever been able to say where exactly all that money went because it does not seem to have gone into just paying for that event. And when you look at who was in charge of the financials. Maybe in retrospect shouldn't be all that surprising that there seems to be a little bit of a financial block box. They're the treasurer of the trump inaugural is someone who was named as an Unindicted Co conspirator in a major tax fraud case on Wall Street. The vice chair of fundraising for the inauguration was the aforementioned Elliott Brady who the Washington Post reports. Tonight is about to be indicted on federal influence peddling charges the deputy chairman of the inaugural committee was Rick Gates who pled guilty to multiple felonies became a cooperating witness in the Mueller investigation you might remember him admitting an open court under oath that it's possible. He did steal some of the trump inaugural money when he was the deputy chairman of it. Tom Barrack was the inaugural chairman. Mr Barrot has also reportedly been looked at by federal investigators potential influence peddling charges though I should say that he has not been charged. But With that what looks now in retrospect like this rogues gallery running the inaugural, running a particularly the financial side of the inaugural. What it came to people trying to track down what appears to be tens of millions of dollars missing from the inaugurals balance-sheet. Somehow all the public blame was directed at none of those guys all the public blame was instead directed at. Milania, trump's Stephanie. Not on any of those guys with their deeply erred backgrounds who had actually handled all the money. Do Seventy. was to walk off was friends with trump for years she had organized the met gala in New York and Fashion Week events in New York she was an experienced event planner at the highest levels. She did form a company that did work on the inaugural after being asked to do. So by Mrs Trump, her company that she formed for the inaugural was paid twenty, six, million dollars each. But she says that twenty five, million dollars of that ish was money that she passed onto other companies that handled the broadcast production for some of the inaugurations major events. Nevertheless, she got headlines like that one and she got all the Public Blaine. And the question remains whereas all the money anyway. Let me read you something from her book. The. Inaugural Committees Budget Director Heather Martin reported that the inaugural committee had filed several filing extensions which had delayed releasing the committee's public facing tax form. It's form nine ninety for nearly a year heather stated her mission and bring us all together. We want to be prepared to mitigate any negative press that form nine ninety release might generate for the first lady she said. Winston walk-off says quote I was on the edge of my chair with anticipation I had known this day would come. But why was this about Melania heather walk us through the inaugural committee year long process of preparing the form nine ninety, she told us she'd been working with Tom, barrack with Treasurer Douglas, Amerman unindicted co-conspirator Guy, and also Rick Gates on the preparation of this tax form. Despite Rick Gates indictment, he was still involved in the filing of the nine nine hundred. My spidey senses were going full tilt. I was practically a tarantula by now have their explained. It's taking longer than they expected I asked why apparently Tom Barrack and Douglas. Ehrman were having a rough time preparing the form because the actual numbers didn't add up. That set off a sudden headache for me. The numbers were the numbers. Why.

My comment had to do however with Malania, and this dismissal of her apparent comments regarding people in the west wing et cetera. There's an old ancient saying that behind every man, there's a great woman behind every leader. There's a great woman helping them mold their decisions and their thoughts. I. She got cover stories in every fashion magazine in the world. Regardless what she was wearing and what occasion Melania Trump hasn't had a single one. I'm not making a point other than bias. I'm not trying to extol the virtues fashion magazines, so just talking about traditional first lady treatment. But it's it all matters in terms of the creation of image respectability. The media is doing and has done everything it can to destroy worldwide respectability for this particular first family, of course, President Trump himself, but. Even his wife and his kids, but Malania because she is. From Europe and has an accent. There is an overall flavor to the coverage of her that she is not very bright or that. She doesn't really care much that she was an airhead trophy wife. And she just you know, she's not she's not given any human respect at all. I can tell you. I do not know her. Well, but I I know her enough to know that she is Nobody's Fool. And she is not a doormat. She is not a wallflower. And she is by no means a trophy anything. "About grabbing women parts, this is not normal. This is not politics. This is normal for Jack Kennedy. What goes through your mind when you? I hit stop instead of pause. But she refers to Trump is a misogynist. And she said, you know, she hated having to smile during the inauguration. Then she just said, you know, what I'm not even gonna try a, okay. We get it. You hate Donald Trump. We get it who who didn't know that that would be part of your book. Of course, it's part of your book. Of course, why why in the world would you write a book, you know, what to inspire people to be uplifting? Talk about your thoughts and deals now. Now, you write a book, so you can trash Donald Trump's it'd be talking about. How would you trash Donald Trump, and therefore, you know, brave. The first lady Melania Trump is standing up for her staff and people are asking questions. Should she do this? I mean, I've seen this on my social media feeds what does she know about foreign policy telitha terrorists. I mean, they might as well say stay in the kitchen, right? Just keep making sandwiches. Lady and all your languages, make multiple language sandwiches sandwiches. Sammy's. Whatever. I don't see anything wrong with what she did. I don't think I don't see anything wrong with the statement. I see something seriously wrong with those people who hates Trump so much. They can't look at a story for what it is. There are plenty of reasons to disagree with Donald Trump. There are plenty of reasons to think that he's making mistakes and right now. The you know, these reports that are coming out that that he's fuming, and he's infuriated by the midterms and looking for someone to blame. I believe every one of those stories are true. Because I believe that's Trump from beginning to end. I'll give you something else. I believe allow me to throw the conspiracy theory in there. I don't I don't mind I've been known to I've been known to do it before..

"And there's a big story out here. Today Melania Trump and her parents and a bunch of different news sources CNN NPR and others are saying that, Melania Trump use the visa opposed by her husband to get her parents citizenship and what they're talking about here is the family chain migration that we've had for, a while now that a lot of people are saying we need to. Change. And I'm one, of them because the way China. Chain. Migration has been going is that people have been able to bring in their spouse in their minor children which I think, must be sure you want. To keep, your family together okay you came over bring your spouse and your children okay but then they've, been bringing their parents and then they've been bringing their brothers, and their sisters and their aunts and uncles. And their nieces and nephews I mean some of this chain. Migration has gone really far and. So President Trump and some Republicans saying you know. What we should shift away from the chain migration and we should move to merit based immigration now we're not saying get rid of all All chain migration. In. Fact the USA, today had peace several months ago. And. They were talking about this in the framework for that the White House is laid out is that you would limit the, family based immigration to spouses. And minor, children so you could still bring in your spouse and your children if they're still minors and, that's it for that type of immigration well if that was, in place now Malani wouldn't be able to. Bring in her parents so he's a hypocrite Well that is a way, to look at you could say that absolutely but. You could also say He's, not. Being a hypocrite at all Because the the the plan that they presented would kick in only after about four million undocumented, people currently on family. Based waiting lists the backlogs are processed And that will, take over a decade So if you really want, to say Trump will be a, hypocrite it would be if he said I want to end it all right now and everybody on the waiting list can't get in and then he let his in laws. In that would be? Your true hypocrite what do you think eight hundred eighty one eighty nine ninety. Nine get. "Rubs people wrong but i wonder if there's some sexism baked into that absolutely i mean the first lady is largely an a and i had tears as her but she is neccessary you know she is a backdrop she is there to humanize the president in a she is there to personalize him she is the outreach and that is you know as both larnaca have pointed out an incredibly powerful role it is very important if you are the leader of a country you are constantly making a controversial if you're donald trump is debated decisions you have to appear in a certain way and your wife is there the first lady is there to be the flip side of that show the country what you know you're like inside the the the house you know what you're like at the breakfast table and melania trump has largely not played that role she has refused to do it and that makes her both you know subversively interesting to a large number of people and mr us i wonder if by way of wrapping up our conversation we he gets a one more comment from nicky who was listening in long beach california mickey wright's i am in no way a trump supporter however i do feel that every girl in woman in the us has the right to car for own path in this world to shape her own destiny and to achieve her own individual goals malania should not be expected to play the role of first lady if that's not something something she feels equipped or compelled to do if my husband became president tomorrow i would still be a speech language pathologist because working with children with disabilities is my purpose in life i wonder if by way of wrapping up lauren right you could react to that briefly how mrs trump is handling this role and whether she may be as little shrewd and kind of doing it her own way she is any no this is something kate and i have both written about recently she is in carving her own path and she is breaking the mauled by not doing everything to make the white house look good but i think we have to be careful on these conversation.

"And so usually and state of the union addresses there some mention of the first lady and her accomplishments so i thought that was striking but yes i'm her parents maloney has parents are involved but in her apartment in a recent poll she a seven percentage points lead on her husband's so yes she is much as lord said more popular and she wields that power which i think you know canceling the davos trip at the last minute is a great example of what you know what how powerful she really is that she knows that she has the upper hand in some ways people want to like malania trump iii was even that free malania movement the democrats had you know wandering to escape the white house somehow that she was miserable i think people are fascinated by her and i think the only person more controversial than president trump right now is malania trump in many ways and people do wanna talk about her a number of you should your experiences with first lady's with us here is what one listener lift in our inbox more from birmingham alabama in the early nineties i was working at j p morgan in new york and we were glen cove conference center and jimmy carter in roslyn carter were were there also on a completely separate matter and one night my group was gathered for dinner and a private dining room and right up to decide the secret service sat rosalyn carter for dinner jimmy was apparently doing something and he wasn't there with her for dinner and when she saw my group she got up from her table she was sitting by herself and came over and asked if she could join us in we absolutely said yes we'd love to have you join us she was delightful she was smart friendly open hey mike thanks for calling in but that's friedman i wonder about that aspect of the first lady's image it seems like there's also a part of it that we expect first ladies to be tipper and friendly and and nights she did the fact that she's beautiful and someone at loose i think inherently.

"Near the top with actors and other a political figures so they carry a tremendous amount of soft power and there is no requirement that they play a public role yes but what we're seeing with mrs trump and what vanessa noted is that when you don't appear that often in public appearances you do make account for so much more they're just more heavilyweighted and so what makes malania trump different as she hasn't really appeased people helped the administration by tweeted taking advantage of this low hanging political fruit which are interviews with the first lady tours of the white house she is not true chosen to really help out the administration in that way and that's certainly different from what we've seen especially hillary clinton laura bush michelle obama because of goods through poipet michelle mood michelle tweeted malania silences boost on selfpreservation and prudence she doesn't really want people partner about her employment history or focusing on her reactions to her husband's behavior malania is keeping her head down and trying to protect herself and her son kate that also goes to one of the key roles of first lady which is as first mother i mean the the obop the bushes had their fair share to deal with with their daughters the obamas with their daughters particularly bringing in michelle obama's mother mary nandes of ms anderson and say ms robinson excuse me marion robinson marion anderson was an opera singer mary robinson and saying that she was there to help raise molina and sasha's so first wife as first mother is a big part of it absolutely and i was surprised in this president state of the union he did not point anything out specifically about malania on her role i taking care of their 11yearold son barron an app rock obama's first state of the union he praised his wife let's move campaign and there was a standing ovation.

"In terms of the way that malania trump has intersected with some of the controversies around donald trump back in two thousand eleven she echoed donald trump's stance on brock obama presenting his birth certificate here's part of what she said let me they easy president obama just so at an agent ongoing is not on earth who wants to see at american who voted for him and who devotedly they want to see that those melania trump speaking back in 2011 ultimately the president did produce his birth certificate spoiler alert he is a us citizen and then after the access hollywood scandal in which donald trump said vile things about being able to grab women in their private parts by dint of his wealth and power here is what mrs trump said after that as you can see from the tape the cameras we're not on it was only and mike and i wonder if they even knew that the mic was on because there there were a kind of a a boy talk and died he was lead on like add on from uh the host to say uh dirty and bed staff kid anderson brouwer how'd you see milania is trump's trump's roll in these various scandals will i you know hillary clinton said no one knows what it's like live in the white house until you've you've done it and i think there is a learning curve there and i think that milania trump you know yes people criticise her for essentially being a birther but i think once she became first lady saw with this fish bull environment is like and the pressures that surround it i'm she has more sympathy i think for these other women interesting how few of you have a high opinion of the first lady nancy tweeted she's arm candy caught at the wrong time in a role she is singularly illsuited to play as is her husband she may be very nice but she is out of her depth in every way but hey at least she's rich and she gets to work.
