"Once again of the pregame show, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield. And once again joining us is coach Mel Pearson. Well, coach. What does what do the team What does the coaching staff What does everybody have to, I guess watch out for today. And, uh, how do you continue that momentum from last night? Yeah, well, you know, they're gonna play harder on bear going to come out the expression at 1st 5 10 minutes then. And come after us but way have to make sure we push back. You know, we have to make sure that we start We're more ready than they are and let them know it doesn't matter what they want to do. It's what we're gonna do, and that's the main thing. I think just being make sure your preparation as individuals and as a group is that you're ready to go. Right from the job of the pop and let them know it's nice. Not gonna be any different than last night's game, and we're going to play hard defensively. We're going to get punched behind him. Go get him in, place out. Move the park quick. Reports the pocket and use our feet. So that's the biggest key to me is just having a good start to the game tonight and let them know that you know, it's gonna be a long night. Faceoff circles. Very important. Michigan State noted for dominating the face of circles against most opponents did not do that last night against Michigan. No, they did not. I know there that was one of the top faced off guys, but there needs list, you know, regardless of the past. I thought our guys did a real good job, especially Johnny feature. Wanna point about it thought he was excellent. Both him and Thomas Ford loaded up real good job in last night's game and the faceoff circle. What do you How do you expect? What type of game from Michigan Say they're gonna for check harder on you. Are they gonna lay back at center ice and try a neutral zone trap? Good question. I ain't gonna have this. You know, it's right, Create some turnovers and some Del Zone type lives last night that we have to be ready for that. That push right off the get. Go there at home. My guess that they're proud Team, you know that they didn't like the result last night, so they're gonna try to have something to say differently tonight. But again, it play it is And if we're ready it we just have to make sure that we're more prepared to play the game when we want it more right from the get go than they do. Well without the without the crowd there. How? How does the venues change? What's different about the money? I Serena, then hear it, Yo Serena as far as the ice surface Well, it's not much different. I don't know if it'll be any more louder tonight, and it would be if they're fans. They're here. It's a quiet place, especially you can get ahead of them so but no, it's the dark arena. You know, a tent can be dull and dreary in here, so you have to create your own energy. And that'll be another key for us is to make sure we have that energy and were excited to play. Boy, It is exciting times in the coach. Best of luck this afternoon. Absolutely valid as always go blue. I've L. Pearson of the pregame show live from the locker room in East Lansing had been arena. This is the Michigan pregame hockey show. Presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield. The Michigan more comes your way. In a moment, I'm their field. I am to college. All athletes strive to perform at their peak and meeting. That goal means putting in extra hours on the trail in the gym or on the court. It also means refueling.

"With coach Mel Pearson brought to you by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Well, Coach. I think you know what to expect. They're going to throw everything but the kitchen sink at you here in the first period tonight. Oh, yeah. You know, they're going to come out. You know, they probably reading off last night. One of the problems when you maybe you win the game, but let them feel like they have a chance that way did last night. Any system as they want, And now they think they have a chance. You know, and the puck speak and come out of them. We have to withstand that first five minutes tonight, and I think you'll see I couldn't get through that. You always ask me about the keys first. Want to again tonight to get through the first five minutes and then then start to play. They're gonna be energized. No, don't bother. Jack Becker back in the lineup, I would assume tonight. Up Big Jack's back in so he'll come in with Garrity and out really wanted trying your goal in the point, you know, Karen and you know, and they looked extremely good, but they'll get their chance against Minnesota. But we want to try to get him his before that. And don't also, you know, Eric until oh, you know, but it's pretty hard to take Charles out. When he's playing like the I know it's frustrating for Eric, but his day will come. You'll get the opportunity. And the thing with all these young guys just want to make sure you're ready. When you get that that call When your name's called you want to make sure you're ready. Everybody wants the opportunity. But you know, not everybody is ready to grab and then take advantage of it. And that's what I'm after. Just the guys too. Haven't had the opportunity to play yet, but they're going to get there get initiated pretty quickly next week. Howard. Of course. What you're referring to is you have five players missing next week for the Minnesota serious that will be headed off to the US World Juniors, and that's something that That Michigan coaching staff and you yourself coaches as you were were a coach for the U. S. A team one time at least. And and it's something. It's an opportunity that you always let the Michigan players go to. Absolutely, And you know, it's unfortunate that you know the big 10. I don't get too far ahead of myself, but they can actually both the game back in the weekend. Tuesday Wednesday and No. Initially we're all good guys going to be here and then leave out to that. But Because the covert and we II HF internationalized Doctor Federation change something role. Unfortunately, No people. Viewers. We didn't have a chance. You don't tense Mother get it They normally would, but too bad with those guys just tired. Do you do you find so far this year with the new face off rules of the games are being played of black cleaner and the flavors off circle and and and you get right at it right away. Idea. Plainer quickness of left jockeying for position. No, I like it. I like it. And the players have done a good job acting at this point and just lining up I like the rule where, you know, throw a guy out automatically. You know, you just get a warning. Down and across the park it that you're good, I think. One of the better rules have that 12 minute intermission. I think you'll like the feel good for the game. Okay. The final comment I'd like to get from your coach is your special team Joe has come to play on the road and they did last night. Your penalty killing was perfect last night, and I know you hope that continues. Yeah. You get a nice job, You know, there's good job goes. I feel that he was that I think will be about Garrett tonight. He was the first guy over the florist Point Kill panel. He thought he had to step up tonight. And that was shows real good, disappointing the game. We have the last three games we have That's the point of being on the ice. Coaches can't get any more exciting than this. Ah, chance toe sweep on the road and it's gonna be tough, but I think you guys are up to it and we're looking forward to the game tonight. You should be a good one. Now we've been in every game is not one game that we haven't had a chance to win. So we'll have a chance tonight, too. And then we just happened. Sure.

"The huddle. And you know, I I mentioned earlier I teased earlier that we had some comedy tickets to give away. And so this Thursday's seven thirty pm showing of Jeff Shaw. Can be yours with the you know, if you give us a call seven three four nine nine eight ten fifty MS will be on the spot. First caller, give us a call. And those two tickets will be yours to see Jeff Shaw perform this week at the number comedy showcase. Four one two. I'm sorry to onto south fourth avenue in downtown in Arbor. All right. Welcome to the show Michigan hockey coach Mel Pearson tough weekend for the wolverines they were swept on the road in big ten quarter-final by Minnesota. First game is really wanted. All kind of us decided Michigan lost three two in overtime. Second game. Four to one didn't got down three nothing seemed like that that Friday game really stuck with them on Saturday. But coach when you look at this weekend, and you look at the season disappointing, and and you love to be playing. You know, how do you kind of evaluate? This past weekend. And and you're you're that you had that will take some time, Michael. But yeah, I definitely disappointing weekend. Disappointing the last two weeks related the regular season. And you know, we'd played pretty well in the big ten all year had never been swept. And then here we are critical. It all started the weekend before Wisconsin. We know we needed to find a win there. We couldn't get one. And then we had some carryover and four of five losses in overtime. So we in in every game. But we just weren't good enough to find a way to win any of those games which were critical Friday night. Minnesota. I thought our guys played hard gave themselves a chance to win got off to a good start to nothing and as the game where on Minnesota got better. And we missed on some good chances to create some separation there in that game. And in that all important first game when you play a short series like this best out of three that first game is critical so important, especially when you're on the road. And unfortunately, we took a bad penalty and overtime. And that was the one thing we needed to stay away from against a team like Minnesota now one of the top teams in the country on the power play. We'd been Goodall game. But you can't keep. Taking penalties eventually is going to catch up to you. And it did an overtime and our guys played heart. They played well Strauss man gives a chance, but a tough tough loss. When you lose regulation. I it's hard enough. But when you lose an overtime it said instant. You know, it's like it's like you've lost twice almost. And it was hard. It was hard on our team. You have to have a short memory. You have to bounce back. But unfortunately, we just couldn't do that Minnesota. You know, just jumped us on Saturday, and we just didn't have any answers, and it was a real tough weekend. And you know, when you look back at it. It's it's a tough tough season. You know, there's a lot of things we have to evaluate from power play to penalty killing the goaltending. You know? And and where we were there. There's so many different aspects that we're going to have to peel the layers back and take a really good look at a lot of things and. You know, the find out why we ended up like we did having said that no excuses, but you'll you start losing Josh Norris. And then Luke Martin and Queen Hughes couldn't play in overtime on on Friday and his limited on Saturday. And I think DEP tested and the injury just start amounting. So there's a lot of things that didn't go go our way, especially a second half. You mentioned that the plane on the big ice. And it really came. It really came back to you as you. As you noted the Wisconsin series the final series of the regular season you needed to come out of there with with a win. If you do your hosting home is you didn't come out of the win either game. And so you play Minnesota. And when you're playing on the big ice, you know, I think we were talking I was talking to Brian Wiseman on on Friday about this. I said are you concerned about that at all? And he said, no we're used to playing on the big ice bone playing. The big is the one thing you want to avoid doing first game is taking penalties. Because then you're you're having to kill on a bigger eyes. But you're also some of your most important players are pounding Cal players and those guys could get a little. Tired? Is it any surprise that as as the game went on? And you'd already taken four penalties in the first things like forty two minutes of the game that your team had its worst period was the third period on on Friday night. No question. I mean you you're chasing the game. You're you're spending all your time and all the energy killing penalties and that adds up. And and you could see it some guys were getting tired especially defenseman too. But yeah. I, you know, I'd rather be at home just just to showcase. This is the last two years since we've gone to this format and the big ten no road team in the first round is one. So that's six series. There's been one game that's been one no series one. You know with this format. So it just goes to show, you the importance, and you look a basketball, you know, Michigan basketball. I mean, I think they've got five losses and all of them are on the road. Uh-huh. You. That's why that was constant weekend. Was so critical that we that was that was devastating. But that was really disappointing. You know, that we couldn't find a way and and how those games went down. And I think we had some carry over a fact to our team, even though you gotta let it go going into Minnesota, Minnesota so much better at home than they are on the road to and they've been, you know, there are five and one they've been playing really, well, they have nine seniors on team we have three. I mean, you you you can like I said, you can peel the onion back a lot. And look at it lotteries and Robson they'd played extremely well. In goal forum. You know, we were having inconsistent goaltending. I mean, there there are a lot of things that I guess showed up in the end. And why we're not still playing today when you look at it. I mean, one of the it's as simple as flipping this and one goal games three and eight this past year is is that an anomaly type of thing is that, you know, having more seniors. I mean when you look at them if you if you even it up if you're if you're five and seven you've got two more wins. If you're if you flip that two two eight and three I mean, your were your top ten team in the country right now while we just needed one in the regular season. We lost ten one goal games. That's including two or three empty net where we had to pull the goalie so out of our seven while sixteen losses. Ten more one by one goal this year. So when you look at a record thirteen sixteen all the ties we this is just regulation overtime or regulation games. We lost ten one goal games. And you know, there's a couple in there with with an open net, which you know, you don't count because you're trying to press. But that's how close it is. That's how tight the big ten is. That's how important know we always talk every chef matters. Or, you know, even if you have Josh nor second half was are leading score always gonna kick in some goals here and there, and you know, you might put that to five and five and now completely different scenario. But. Today's today, we're not there. So we can make excuses and look at some things, but we we we we're down in scoring last year. We ended up six in the country in scoring this year. We're twenty fifth. We just did not get part of that is Josh being Bellagio lock out. We just didn't make up for the Tony Calderon and the Dexter dang and Cooper Maroney. We just didn't know Cooper had fifty seven points last year leading score. This year's Quinn. Thirty some points. We just did not have the offense. And you know, we can point to some of our freshmen just came on a little late. But didn't have big numbers. Goaltending was worse goals against were worse this year than it was last year. So special teams, I think in combined aggregate, we're one of the fifth worst teams in the country. I mean that that's that's not good. And here we are sitting here. And we had a chance ended up in second place on the last weekend. I mean, that's how. Crazy. It is. But we're not far off. But we need a lot of work to. Well. I think in in one of the he runs a blog or used to Joost post Joost built a guy that I know pretty well. And I think he said even with your power play that before the Josh injury was like twenty four percent or five percent. And then after Josh Norris injury. It was like in the teens. And it was like the would be the worst power play in. And so I think what it shows is reminder, and I and you and I've talked about this throughout the year. Is that last year you guys went to the frozen four? Yeah. But I think everybody was like, wow, Michigan hockey didn't even need time to rebuild their back. And as we've discussed like there's actually a little bit of their you need some time to get the roster to where you can suffer a loss of Josh are you can suffer loss of a will Lockwood. And there's enough guys that are capable stepping up in taking those offense of roles or those defensive roles, and you're just the program is just not there yet, you're getting closer. Certainly some of those freshmen that came on. And we talked about them gear van why and Nolan Moyle came on is the season neared its end. But you're not you can't you can't have two major injuries. Like you did. And just not miss a beat at this point. Well, we don't have the depth. We're we're not belt at this point for that to happen. And. We'll get there. We'll get there. We we like where we're headed going forward. But it's disappointing. You know, even last year. So this is weird. And last year we lost more games overall than we did this year. So. That's weird. But we had a lot of ties this year. We're in a lot of tight games. But. I thought our guys battled hard gave us everything we had. We're just weren't that good enough? You know, the big ten is is tough. I mean every night you're playing against guys are going to be playing in the NHL come shortly here when the seasons. John good. So every night, you're in a battle. We beat each other up consistently. We don't have those two or three teams are league. Where you have those guaranteed wins like other leagues, do and you get some separation, but having said that. Yeah. We just couldn't we just don't have the depth right now. And last year, I think goes a long segment new coach everything, and you get that little bit of bump usually doing the in the first year. And and now we're sort of more back realistically where we are. Now having said that if we had Josh Norris this year, you know, who knows I truly believe we'd be at home would still be playing and still have a chance. But that's how good a player he is. And you just cannot replace those guys. And we thought we might have some guys be able to step up the freshman and some of them did the second half, but not to the point or not to the level of a Josh Norris. Michigan hockey coach Mel Pearson who saw his season come to an end last weekend in a quarter-final sweep by Minnesota evaluating the season at the wolverines had and we'll we'll get into in just a little bit looking forward here. But you know, when you when you think about you've got a recruiting class coming in. I don't know how many kids you can talk about who already sign their letter Fintan, but this freshman class. You had was a lot of depth guys that you saw it could develop over time and be in a core players for this Michigan hockey team. And we certainly saw that throughout the year. "For you, just for you. Me just for me. A lot of interesting things going on this week. It's finally nice to talk a little hockey. I know I missed last week. So I'm excited to be on and talk to you a little bit of butter team where we're headed. But thanks for that man's really enjoy that. No, Brown, Michigan hockey coach. Mel Pearson joins us after a one in one weekend. At Ohio State beat the buckeyes to one on Friday night. Fell four to two on Saturday really a three two game, including an empty netter. We're going to go all the way back to January fast the outdoor game at Notre Dame. Michigan beats the forty four to two and Mel the we know that the crowd wasn't that big. They reported their reported thirty five thousand I heard twenty three, but okay, so twenty three twenty three there. So it wasn't. It wasn't the type of atmosphere. You've had for the big chill the big house or for the Cold War some of these other ones, but what was it like that week leading up to it and the day the game and for your players, which if Crichton from wrong, but I don't think any of your players in this current team played in a outdoor game. They have not and had not. So I think it was a great event, regardless of the crowd, you know, twenty three thousand just playing outdoors in Konic stadium against Notre Dame, which was a conference game big points. But the week leading up to it. You know, they were like. They're like kids like a bunch of young kids pretty giddy and couldn't wait to get down there and get on the ice. We practice the day before we did get to go out on the ice. And you know, we let them enjoy the moment you have to you know, it's a special event. Some of these guys will never play in an outdoor game against. You know, we wanted to make sure that as much as we wanted to get some things down and prepare for the game at the same time. We wanted to make sure that they took everything in and and they get and they had fun. And I think that helped us the next day we came out and right from the get-go played extremely well. But they had some issues there with you know, with the crowd as far as being able to promote the games they could not promote the game. The Notre Dame game until the NHL winter classic game was eighty percent sold and. It took a while for that ain't shell to get to that threshold before Notre Dame could even start marketing. Also, you know, it's tough when you have the NHL come in and then turn around five days later and have you know, college game. I just think the the market there was just not ready for that that back to back event like a wasp. But our guys still enjoyed it. And you know, and you really enjoy it when you win so guys had a blast. And you know, it was a lot of fun and just to see their faces and all the little things they were doing down there. It was great because you go back to the essence and the start a hockey playing outdoors. That's where it all started. Then. You know, a lot of these kids like you said have never been even outdoors probably skating so for them to get out there. It's a it's a neat atmosphere. It's hard to explain until you you've been out there and do it. And it was awesome. Awesome. We'd be Notre Dame to did you grow plants in pond hockey well in Minnesota, I lived right across from Arinc outdoor rinks. So I'd go to practice high school. And then, you know, I'd go home and have a little dinner, and then probably be out there for three or four hours. I did some homework somewhere in that timeframe by absolutely. I just enjoyed it debts. I mean, it brings back a lot of memories to me just just being outdoors and. You know, there was a rink there with boards, and then just across from was a huge area where the just know boards, like a big pond and probably skate out there more than I did in the enclosed ranked just with the boards just to get out there and work on some things. But had a lot of fun. Spend a lot of time out there. So yeah brings back lots of memories for me. Also, I actually learned to skate in our backyard. My dad made a is rank and nowadays, I'm driving through the neighborhood. And they've got like all these premade rings. Yeah. That makes it very easy to create one. I might add flood the backyard. Yeah. And then try to get the the ice level. Or that was like this hardest thing that he would. He would he would try to do. So same thing for my kids has lived in slain, and I'd I'd put water over the basketball a little basketball court in the backyard and the water right over the concrete just set up some boards around just to try to get a makeshift rank and our kids enjoyed it. And then when I was up in Michigan tech, we lived on Portage lake up there, and we were out on the out on the lake. The only problem there to get so much Nelly. Just got tired of shell. Gave up after a while. But no question, I know a lot of people around here have those pre made ranks with Brian Wiseman sits on coach has a fantastic one. But it hasn't been cold enough. This this winter yet to maintain that. So hopefully from here on in the people can get out and enjoy the outdoor rank. Yeah, sounds like if you look at the forecast for the coming days and weeks that it might it's going to be cold. And it's going to be snow is coming hockey. Weather's finally coming. Yeah. Yeah. So let's let's it's time for the hockey team to get itself going that. And I I like where we're out Mike, I really do our team a sensor break as played for the most part really consistent and well other than that game who have a week ago tonight. You know, we we just weren't prepared for that game. And we were. We were concerned about as coaches because that that trap game at sandwich game, whatever you wanna call it, and it came up and bit us, and you know, we try to get back in the game in the third period. But we just couldn't get all the way back. But having said that we went to Notre Dame beat a real good Notre Dame team. Which is ranked in the top ten at the time. And then this past weekend beat a real good Ohio State team are still in the top five in the country. And we need them on Friday night in a real real good game. And then Saturday had the lead to one halfway through the third period with ten minutes left to go on the game. And we were playing well, and we only gave up four shots in that period. And one was the empty net goal to win and Hayden Levin at one safe viewing told me you're going to give up four shots to stayed in the third period of Saturday night in your head to one I would've taken that every day of the week. So really halfway through the third period. They had one shot on goal. And as you as you pointed out, they weren't bad goals given up saw wasn't like shots in and four shots wanted an empty net goal one save. And then the two goals they scored against Aden. We're good shots. Bad bad breeds into camp defensive coverage just little mistakes. And unfortunately, they ended up in their net. I felt bad for our team because they played hard. They played inspired. You know, they they played with some grit. We did a lot of good things defensively. You know, we're still struggling offensively to score a lot of goals. But I think that'll take care of itself as we go forward. So I like where haven played both games. Played extremely well. Beat Notre Dame beat Ohio State. We did not play him in that Tuesday game. But you know, he's emerged to where it was last year. And that's a real good sign because there's one guy in a team that can beat you all by himself. It's one of the few sports where one guy can can beat a team sport. And it's the goaltender nothi continues to play like he does and Strauss. Continues to push him. You know, we're going to be in real good shape. So I just I just like the overall temperament of our team. And where you get a feel for that. You know, when you're walking wearing boy, it's it's Molin and pushing and struggling or while. Okay. These guys are ready their their body. I'm they finally not awry, but we're we're definitely headed in the right direction. We're talking to Michigan hockey coach Mel Pearson two and two in their last four games including wins at Notre Dame. And at Ohio State, and before we talk about the offense and defense, and I want to ask you about the goaltending with. Hey levin. You said that he's playing really well because it's been a it's been a year long journey here. So what seems to be clicking for hate in these last couple of weeks work ethic, just as work ethic. You know, I think the first half. I don't want to say wasn't working, but it wasn't up to the standard that we had sat and he sat sun. I think there's a little frustrated, and we're you know, alternating there, and but we wanted him to compete compete for the job and he's done. And now, he's tracking the pockets. Practice habits are so much better than they were the first half. And I think that's that's you know, and Steve shields down a great job of them. And that's directly correlates to where he has now. And how he's playing just his commitment to was is day to day preparation work ethic. And the didn't you go for all our players. And I think it has. I think we're we're practicing much better than we were the first half. I you know, I wish I knew why we didn't earlier, but maybe because we had so many young guys, and they're just learning how to how do what it takes to practice at the division one level. So but anyway for for hay, and you know, he's played three or four last games and played extremely well. All right. When we come back. We'll talk to Mel Pearson about his offense getting Quin Hugh's back in the lineup and looking forward to this second half. Of the season has.

"And it's not just who you're giving the ball to it goes back to this is that just throwing the ball more. It's how you approach it the different routes the different combinations. I was really impressed with Florida. I they really went against you know, because I watched the game. It's kind of a fun little game within the game. Predict. What's going to happen next? I'm actually I I will say I'm not I'm not like baton eighty percent with Michigan. But for the most part, I kind of know where they're going. I watched them more Florida was like, I'm like, oh here, they go, you know, fleet Franks is gonna do an option here and flip it. But then he ends up passing it you know in the end zone forward. It's just like, oh, well, you know, look at all these different little things they do. And it's it's again, it's a game of inches. You can go back and look that peachable game. You can you can count the inches where all of a sudden Michigan's in that football game in the fourth quarter, and and you can count on Florida's side. You know, just just having one more possibility that the defense has to account for, you know, suddenly, maybe they missed that tackle, maybe they arm tackle Nate. They don't get it. Or maybe they maybe they take just slightly the wrong England, don't catch the guy. So yeah. I mean, the more the more difficult your offenses to predict I I'd say the better it is as long as your team can predict it knows what's going on. But yeah, I I. I hear ya. You know? No one's sitting there like, oh, it's yeah. I think Albor just had the same thing wherever he's just going to run up the middle. And it's like, well, there's a lot a lot of different ways you can run up the middle, and it doesn't necessarily mean that it's it's the wrong play. But I think I think there's some predictability it sure seemed like it against Ohio State seemed like Ohio State news coming. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, well, I think they scouted him. Scott michigan. Really well. And I think Florida New in that second third quarter. Yeah. Well, I think Florida New after the first quarter of that. Oh, oh, man. Michigan tend to learn anything from that Ohio State game. They're going to run the exact same stuff against us that handle in. Urban meyer. So it's like all right. Nice. Is this? Hey when we come back final thoughts. Final phone calls. We're kind of couple could big college basketball games tonight. Coming up later this week. We will talk to Chris young on Friday to talk. The bird's eye view had the scope up and Checketts stop is the visual ticketing partner. But you're gonna have next up up. Be there. Pretty much the way you want to start this hockey game. Six five and a half minutes into the hockey game. You're up to nothing one was a bad goal. And right after that. We'll walk would argue one of your best players makes a great move into the slot area. It beats kilgore's once again so to death in Michigan. Job up any better overeats couple of big saves your own goalie. And now you lied now. You feel more comfortable in this hockey game in this environment. Now you start to attack. I was Mel Pearson a couple minutes ago, shoot shoot shoot. You don't know where he's at right now it is ad for kilgore's. This is not a goalie out of that is thinking twice. This is one of the maybe the best going all the country here. This is a big stage. You never know how things are going to happen when you get a big environment. And maybe not seeing the the right way or just he'll maybe the first goal. Just a fluke. Either way the who cares. Walgreens up to nothing right now. There comes Gert van y circle. Garrett in there too. Might have hurt himself sweet themselves a little bit yesterday. Practice looks like he's feeling better. "So they got a chance to see how he did with the team and reacted even though it's a small sample size. I think he obviously did a good enough job. And they feel good about them. But you know, there's a lot goes into it. And I get it. I get it when I was here. And there was no guarantees that. If I stayed that I would have the opportunity to succeed read all they told me as you'll be a candidate. But if you go out and somewhere and get head coaching experience and do a good job. Then you you're probably be a much better candidates because you get the experience, and there is a difference between being the assistant coach and the head coach, no doubt about it. And I mentioned that the red when I saw him halfway through my first year. I said, you know, I thought I knew everything is as an assistant coach I was just going to slide in there and everything would be you would miss a beat. But but it is different. I mean, whether it's the pressure of the responsibility or all the outside of issues, you have to deal with and the buck does stop on your desk, where as an assistance, you know, a lot of those times you don't have to worry about things you're just so involved in recruiting and and just working with the players. You have that you don't have the other other stuff you have to worry about. So I think going away and in my case. Made me much more ready and much much more prepared do to come back and be the coach. And obviously very fortunate the worked out like a dead, you'll be curious to see everything you just said there, and you know, one of the things too when you came back to Michigan is you you followed, you know, one of your mentors. You follow one of the greatest coaches in college sports, and yet there's a there's a, you know, I just don't I'm not going to do it exactly. The same way the guy did it before me. So Ryan day takes over he learned from urban Meyer the last two years, but he certainly gonna come through and say, well, there's things that I'm to want to do a little bit differently. I'm gonna wanna put you know, it's not even about putting your your your print on the program. Just like for me to be successful. I've got a run in a little bit. I've got run of my way. Right. I think that's the biggest thing. And maybe the most important thing red told me is you have to be yourself. You have to be yourself. You can't be mean just come in here and be yourself you you've had success. You know, how to do things. Just make sure you stay true to yourself and be and be who you are. And and then just go for it. And and that was great to hear from red. And you know, obviously made me feel better about a situation where I don't, you know, not looking over my shoulder have to do everything like he did whether it's the players recruited or how you run practices. You know, how you do your off off ice training all those things. So but still there's a lot of a lot of things that coach Berenson taught me that we use today. All right. Great stuff from Michigan hockey coach Mel Pearson here again at tonight, six PM at the bell going on and semen person or listen to him right here on W T K A, and he'll be joined by Quin Hughes and. Josh norris. Probably I don't think this is probably a secret. But Michigan's best forward in their best defenseman now without a doubt, they've been outstanding. And Joe Joe might say something about the best defenceman. He's been really good too. But you know, those two guys are definitely two of the horses. That are pulling the car right now for us. All right. Great stuff when we come back. We'll finish up talking. A little Michigan football is inside the huddle on sports talk. Ten fifty W. Message and data rates may apply..

"Please more more than all the way to the ball game. But let's not forget ten win season. And we're probably going to go eleven in the ball game. Right. We're going to be prepared for that. We always see different wrinkle going to have a lot of practice time for the guys. So let's not, you know, just throw the entire program in the garbage in the trash, right? Because there's one game. This is a game where I'll played right. They were prepared more than us. They they made adjustments. What really have to make any judgments, but they made a Justice pre-game that okay? If they countered this we'll do this. And so they did a very good job. They deserve kudos. And I think that you know, we should mourn, and we should be upset. But don't don't don't do anything. Crazy, like tweet kids, or I mean, I guess you can tweet coaches. They don't really care. I'm sure in horrible might teach you back. So you'd better be careful what you say. All right. Let's go back to phone lines. Let's go to Linda in Ann Arbor. One of our regulars data calls up every week. Yes. Welcome back. Linda. Devon that was another great sartorial moment on the sports cave. Paul. You're on this week. I didn't even I didn't even what goes on. But he doesn't ever want to watch. Watched these told me, that's that's okay. Anyway. So I'm trying to get past the specificity of this particular loss, which was really really hard. But I'm a lot older than you guys. And I remember I actually do remember though, I was a little kid that fifty fourteen game when Woody Hayes the famous quote game when he said he tried to go for two because he couldn't go for three and that was a watershed moment because the next year was the epic twenty four to twelve victory, which is in my mind was Michigan's very greatest victories. The second. When when it was going down. They took me I thought for sure that they were gonna try to score and go for two and get seventy points. I thought for sure they were going to do that. But you know, they showed some class, and they didn't do it. But I mean could we be upset if they did know because you have to stop them. Right. But I thought for sure they were gonna do it because of what you just described with Woody as. Yeah. I thought the same thing. Go ahead. Linda. Urban had already made this point because you know, what we twenty three point lead. He was going to the play offs. You guess we're kind of losing her. We're kind of losing your hair, Linda, all right? Formation at that point. He squall while. Hey, Linda, we're gonna we're gonna go to Brian. And maybe you can try calling back in because we're we're not we're not able to pick you up. Okay. So we're going to go to Brian in Pinkney. And then hopefully, you can call back and get your question, Brian. How are you today? Hey, john. How's it going? Two or three days after what happened? Yeah. Well, I'll tell you when I was growing up about five or six hundred years ago bomber six hundred years ago. Like, man, I I graduated in eighty one usually the mess anyway. Kids in the neighborhood. You wanted to get a playboy, you know. And the playboys ranking of the toy worst football tools every year. I don't know if you guys remember that Egypt for several years ago. And the number one team for several years ago. One of the reasons why became a fan of that team. Because I I always rooted for underdog was starts western northwestern was on that list year after year after year. And I looked at it as a team like northwestern. I looked at it look at our division in the big ten as a whole. And I hear all these people say get rid of hardball. He can't coach can't you just that's ridiculous. You got stamps. That's spent much time and money under assistant coaches and everything else scheming doing game plans. My acid test is your Harbaugh after sheer if not more flexible if he doesn't find a better way to compete with these narrowly teams lakey adjustments. Then then I might have a problem with him. But right now, if you go back just go back just five or six years ago. She just stayed of our football team were Tennessee right now normally happy about the two losses. I'm ecstatic about beaten MSU, and I think the future is very bright. Especially the offense. Let's see if he can be flexible make adjustments disease. I think he can think machinery stronger. Yeah. You know, Brian. That's I think that's the point that a lot of people. After they after the frustration subsides after the anger subsides from Saturday. Where a lot of people are as there is they're asking. Okay. What does Jim Harbaugh do now? And you know, everybody seems to be in kind of agreement that it has it's the offense more than the defense. I mean, yes, the defense got torched on on on Saturday. But most people believe that Dan Brown is still the answer. And that he'll have a better game plan for next year, and he'll be more prepared. Now, they're still bringing in greater athletes. The question is with the offense and his Devon pointed out with with Don people's Jones and Nico Collins. And you know, I know he didn't have very good game Zack century and Chris Evans and Kevin cow was Kevin Eubanks from the tonight show. But Nick Eubanks, I mean, these are guys that that are playmakers that when they touch the ball they did something incredible with that. And you look at how many targets and how many touches they get per game. And they're pretty miniscule. I mean, Donald people's Jones finishes Michigan's. Leading receiver this year with thirty nine catches. Now. He has one more goal bowl game to go. But thirty nine catches. There's been a lot of people asking for for cliff Kingsbury from taxes tack or whatnot. I don't know. That's the answer. But I will say this. He had three wide receivers this year that caught more than fifty balls including one guy that had eighty five catches fourteen hundred yards and nine touchdowns. I mean that you know, it's a matter of putting the ball into your best playmakers hands, and certainly Krahn Higgins one of your best playmakers hands, but he got the ball twenty five times per game. And he averaged about five and a half yards per carry. Could you reduce that by six to eight carries and spread those six to eight carries out instead to shorter passes? The Chris Evans to go going down filled with Donald people's Jones to throwing fade routes Nico Collins. I think you could and that's something that's got to change evolution of the offense to to put his best players in a position to make those players one team did it on Saturday. Once he was very slow to adapt finally sort of. It out. But by then it was too late. And that's why they lost the game on Saturday or one of the reasons they lost the game on Saturday pressure. The phone call. All right, finally finish up here with Linda, Linda, how are you again? Hopefully, this time it works. Yes. Can you hear me? We can hear you. Okay. So I guess my question is besides being taken to the woodshed on Saturday is left. Saturday's game really going to be a watershed moment for us in terms of whether there are going to be changes. And what are the those gonna be do we need on a named offensive coordinator? What are the changes that have to be made? So that our stubbornness isn't used against us in the way, it was on Saturday. Any thoughts on that? Devon, what do they have to what type of changes they have to make two? So that the stubbornness is not used against him. Just don't be stubborn. Yeah. I mean, maybe not as stubborn right? I think we had a lot of opportunities during the season a big to work on, you know. Hey, let's just tuck it, right? Let's see what our quarterback has when he has to throw a ball. Right. Let's let them throw it a lot of times get in sync with his receivers. Because at some point we're going to need it. But when your defense is really giving up absolutely nothing. I think you feel comfortable in saying our defense is gonna stop everybody. No matter who we play right? And I think everybody is fans we believe that as well. And so when when when you kind of get shell shell shocked in the game the game is tough to, you know, make adjustments. But I mean like everybody saying you have to do it. You have to do it. So I don't I don't know if you ninety an office coordinator because we don't know the inner workings, right? It could be no named office coordinator, but maybe pep Hamilton steel calling the place or it could be no name in Harbaugh's calling the place. You don't know. Oh, for sure what's going on in the inner workings of the team. But I don't think anything is going to be done to satisfy everyone else as far as oh name a guy. Just so everybody else feels comfortable. So if we could be next time, they can have a guy blame I don't think that's going to happen. But. Something needs to happen. Right. And I think he's just using our weapons a lot better. And I think in this in this ball game. You can hold me to this. I think that our weapons will be used and everybody will get a chance to see what could have been. I know that might make people even matter. But I think that we will get a chance to see it being opened up a little bit. All right. Appreciate the phone. Call Linda, thanks to everybody that called in during our segment here with with having garner. Devon will return probably sooner rather than later. I Don I we'll we'll have we'll have them back. Oh, certainly as long as he wants to keep on coming on on our Mondays for Monday morning quarterback. And certainly we'll be talking before. And after the ballgame. Yeah. I mean, I guess we just kinda thought the season was going to get extended right here. Right. Above for sure will be back next week. And then, you know, moving forward not back, but it didn't happen. And you never know. We can we bring you back next week. We could bring back anytime you want. That we can't people can ask questions because I mean, I know a lot about a lot of different things. And so if you wanna learn about cockapoo, toy poodle mixes, and what they like to eat whatever you wanna do. We can do that. All right. Sounds good. We come back. We'll talk to Mel Pearson, Michigan hockey coach. Hopefully, hopefully, not exact yeah. Ms you're the best. He is the best. He is. Can we get around employ for me? It's going to be one. "You don't need a t shirt. That's that's not part of the revenge juror. That's go win the big ten east. Okay. Their revenge tour is these three teams that Michigan is not accustomed to losing to or. You know? And so and like their offense scored thirty three points combined in those three games. So's. I it's it's it's these three weeks three in a row can events three losses and can come out of it play off contenders. All right. So that'll be the Socrates. And then once they go three. Welcome to the studio booth. Welcome to w t k Michigan hockey coach Mel Pearson. The wolverines split last weekend in a home and home series with western Michigan. They earned their first a regular season win of the year with a six five victory over western Michigan on Friday in front of their fans and you'll stay Serena. They went on the road to Kalamazoo and dropped a five four game on Saturday a game that I'm sure coach Pearson will say he wants back after they enter the third period with a four to three lead. But welcome to welcome to the show here. Good after Michael sorry. Little late. Let you and by the way. Yeah. Walked out. I don't know. I you know after a loss. I get it. I questioned sometimes to use my keycard Avella actually work in the morning now though. Okay. Well, I it's good to be here. And like I said it was great Friday night sold out fifty eight hundred people in there. Sometimes I wish we had a bigger building. But. Real good home crowd on a sort of kick things off. I know we played earlier. But it just doesn't seem like we've had any games this weekend. And we need games we need games. I think that was evident this this past weekend that there's a lot of things we need to work on the e you can you can do all you want in practice by. It's not the same. You have to get in in games and be able to work on some things. So I'm really looking forward to the next month or so and and get get in the grind sort of get in the groove and the grind and get going. So good game Friday night. Let's talk about the positives. Let's talk about the positives of the weekend and getting the win. Maybe some of the scoring that you saw Michigan scored ten goals this weekend. So, you know, you come in with your with your staff with a billion with coach wise men and coach shields, and you wanna talk, what's on the positives. What are the things that you were happy with over the weekend? Well, power play was you know, it was tell two games powerplay was really good on on on Friday special teams for the most part of been. Good in the power play since. Freshman or freshmen came in. And did a real nice job. I mean, they're starting now they're not getting a lot of points. But what they do. You can see the value and you can see their growth from week to week. And and how they're playing we mixed the lines up. I liked their line combinations. And like I said, we're gonna get we're we're going to get some scoring Lockwood. Scorn Norris scoring Pasha jaw that line is off to a great start. So. Quin hughes. I thought did a lot of good things. There's a lot of positives. Going on now. They can be overshadowed pretty quickly. But I like this team I told our team yesterday that as a staff we really liked this team. We've got all the ingredients. So it's just a matter of putting together and mixing up that that that recipe a recipe for success. But I like this team it's going to take us on a while though..

"You know, especially at our player amenities in that and a few things for the fans because we're we're getting behind. Notre Dame's got a brand new building. Penn State's got a brand new building Millon sodas in other buildings twenty years old, and they just put another twenty million in Michigan state, just announcer. I think seventeen million they're putting in their ranks Ohio State. You know, fairly new building in the shot, Wisconsin new building call. So so we've gotta we've gotta do some things Joost is a great place on I wouldn't trade it for for any other rank on game night, but for our player amenities, and that we've gotta make some approve and and just make it a little bit more friendly for the fans to sell. We're looking to do that. But that's we're in the process of bigger Alexander what we can do to Joost do. You do. I mean, what what in terms of your landlocked? Really, you can't really move unless you like build over State Street a down some houses on their side of the street, or like between were you in baseball is fi radical you could eliminate that entire parking lot. And I don't know how many feature gain there were probably enough to do some things. But it's you're you're landlocked. Well, one of the things is the back you can back there when you look at the back. It's not that attractive or pretty there is some room to go out there. And then we we've discussed that. But definitely inside. There's not much room was never built as a as a nicer built as a field. It's it's been a great home for Michigan hockey, and it will be for many many years to come. We do not need a new building. I'm not not saying we need a new building. But we definitely have to start looking at some things for our players were dealing with multimillion dollar athletes now and top guys. And we've got to make sure that we can provide them the training room, the weightlifting room, you know, the lounges and just different things. Like that that that we have to take a look at a hard look. But we've got the we got a great Pele. We've got a great belly. When got I think the greatest fan base in in college hockey, and I've I've been to I believe every rink now in college hockey, and you won't find his passionate fans are Alabama Huntsville, Alabama Huntsville, yes. Yes. Bemidji and Alaska Fairbanks and Alaska Anchorage, you go down the list, Arizona state. So anyway, we we have a great building. Now, we have a great fan base and on game night the atmosphere, and there is electric, and and you don't want to lose that a lot of these new buildings. You don't get that same sense of the atmosphere. Detroit's going through that a little bit with the job. Little Caesars, and we don't want to lose that. But we just wanna make sure we're we're we're taking care of our student athletes are great stuff from Michigan hockey coach Mel Pearson. They opened up the season this weekend against Vermont had on how to y'all start. Serena game time is seven thirty pm on Saturdays. Yeah. Go watch a football game. Go watch them just cream mirror beat them. Then go have either a post game meal, whatever you wanna call it or a pre game meal and then come into a hockey game. I think it's a great idea. What a great I wish I could do that. If I could do that the football game have a nice meal. Pepsi. You can do whatever you want. You can't sit back and relax. Enjoy it though. And get mad at the referee's. Well, I guess I can get mad at the referee's. But anyway, it's going to be a great day of Michigan athletics. And I just encourage everybody to make sure you get out to the football game and support our team and they're going to have a special year. They're having a good year. But anyway, and then come on over the hockey game. And and and cheer Assan that'd be great. All right. Great from Michigan hockey coach Mel Pearson. He'll join us every week during hockey season. Thank you very much. Mel, thanks, Mike. Thanks for having me on we come back. We'll finish up today show. Bill Bennett from sporting news still needs to join us inside the hot on sports talk. "I'm doing good guys how you doing good so brandon i mean i'm gonna say in january i mean this team this team and i go back to that notre dame game in january where they got swept but i heard melle mel pearson say this is the best we played and we're going to have things things are gonna start turning around for us and wow wow he he's got a crystal ball or something because he turned i mean completely it's one eighty it's it's a three sixty what has done what what has mel dump for this team brandon i don't wanna sound like nostra donnas with what i predicted in january but we'll have to go back to the tapes it's funny i i remember talking after that loss both know they split up and we just talked about the confidence that they got during that weekend and how they're putting it together and whether underneath game win streak or an eightgame lost street you know where your teams out by talking to the guys in the locker room and talking those guys and seeing that they were confident themselves and looking at turn it around and obviously get senior leadership it's it's cool to see you know we also talked about to the ncaa tournament for hockey four games and you you win at all and they're halfway there so you just gotta be playing their best hockey at the end of the year and teams like b you were i mean they won hockey east and you know they had to win to get into the tournament so big deal so good for them and get for michigan for for knocking off to good teams like that brandin but i mean to go in the go into mean go to massachusetts and beat be you knowing that you know the winner is going to the frozen four and like you said bu was a hot team too in northeastern to bought two local boston teams.
