Deputies in Loudoun County need your help with their investigation into the crash which happened about 7 p .m. last night along southbound Route 28 near Sterling Boulevard in Sterling a car hit a tractor trailer which then overturned and caught fire. The 18 year old driver of the car is arrest under for having fake tags and driving without insurance. Additional charges are expected. He's being held without bond. The truck driver has life threatening injuries. Investigators want to speak with anyone who may have seen what happened moments before this along collision Route 28. Spacey began by discussing how he got involved in the theater overall, providing some light history on his life before delving into the serious matter before the court now. The measurements recorded at Reagan National, and that puts us in the moderate drought category. WTOP has learned that Maryland's Department of the Environment is checking closely the reservoir levels along levels with the of streams and groundwater. MDE says some of the measurements are below normal, but it believes there is water now for residents and businesses. The Department of the Environment is starting to reach out to local governments in Maryland and public water systems to ensure they have plans in place should the drought get even worse. There are no mandatory water restrictions in place now, but state leaders in Maryland say it's always a good idea to conserve water when you can. Anne Kramer, WTOP News. "Ago on Blake Lane near Oakton High School has prompted a number of safety improvements including upgraded crosswalks and signs warning of pedestrians. VDOT in a public meeting this week released early data on problems that remain on the roadway such as people speeding and a lack of visual cues that pedestrians are present. Some fixes that are in the in works the according to a community letter from Providence District Supervisor Dahlia Palcic include installation of a speed camera in the area a 10 -foot wide sidewalk along parts of the roadway and a rapid flashing beacon to warn drivers. Life in prison is the sentence for a man who raped and killed a young woman with Down syndrome in her Alexandria apartment. 41 year old David Cunningham was convicted in February for the 2021 murder of 23 year old Melia Jones who prosecutors say was mutilated and strangled. The Washington Post reports Cunningham lived in the same apartment building on South Van Dorn Street where Jones had recently moved in. The man charged with assaulting Minnesota Congresswoman Angie Craig in DC is pleading guilty. Facing three federal charges including assault on a member of Congress, Kendra Hamlin entered his guilty plea. On February 9th this year Hamlin assaulted Minnesota representative Angie Craig in her Capitol Hill apartment building. Court documents say after getting into the elevator with her, Hamlin punched the Congresswoman and held her around the neck. She got away by throwing her hot coffee on him. Hamlin has a long criminal history which Craig noted in her interviews following his arrest including 25 bench warrants for failing to show up for court. He could face up to 11 years in for prison assaulting Craig and two arresting officers. Megan Cloward, AWTOP News. Hiring and retaining restaurant staff is still a challenge in the hospitality industry especially in Prince George's County. Advocates are now offering grant money to help those restaurants pay more. One reason for that challenge is because... Workers in Prince George's County can wake up in the morning, go across the border and get more than double the wage. Saru Jayaraman is the president of One Fair Wage which is teaming with Capital One to offer restaurants thousands in grant money to help them make the transition to paying their employees $15 per hour plus tips. You can't have great restaurants without great workers. Families who get government food assistance are losing about 82 bucks a month more and more families are going to be turning to food bank and our network of 330 partners all across the state to access food. Maryland food bank CEO Carmen del guacho says they've already seen a huge increase in demand during the last few years. We're buying about 25 million pounds when historically pre COVID are probably about 12. And we're also paying about double what we were paying pre COVID about 88 cents a pound versus 44 cents, 45 cents. "Gunned down by police near Tyson's corner center after he was accused of stealing sunglasses, says she wants to see the police warn body camera footage. She's also demanding an independent investigation into his killing. Melissa Johnson can't make sense of the fact her son Timothy is no longer here. I don't have a clear picture or understanding as to what happened and I thought I don't know how long the investigations are going to take life. It's just so many unanswered questions. A week after fairfax county police officers shot and killed the 37 year old near Tyson's corner center. Johnson's attorneys are demanding the police department release all records in the case. I think the release of the footage would just help the grease in the morning process. The NAACP a fairfax county is called for an independent investigation into Johnson's killing and a review of the rise of officer involved shootings in fairfax, there were 6 in 2022 compared to one year before. A new bill would prevent officers from making those kind of minor traffic stops in Montgomery county. It's called the safety and traffic equity in policing or the step act. The bill would limit traffic stops for low level moving violations as primary offenses like window tinging or defective taillights. This bill is part of reimagining public safety and kind of focusing our police on the most urgent safety needs, as well as addressing the racial and ethnic disparity. Council member will jawando introduced the legislation. And my hope is that we can work with colleagues and pass this and really work with law enforcement to get them to, again, focus on the most urgent needs in the community and not these low level traffic offenses. Small businesses in Washington, DC's Prince George’s Co. have new option for pandemic relief
"Businesses and Prince George's County have a new way to get coronavirus relief grants thanks to a new program that just started today. This is about creating opportunity to keep the doors open for many of our smallest cos. Prince George's County Council member Mel Franklin says. It's a program that offers grants of 12 $3000 to businesses that have at most 10 employees in less than $250,000 in annual revenue. It's being put together by the PFC Black Chamber and advocacy group focused on black owned businesses in the county. The fund is starting off with at least $20,000 available. The demand for this fund is going too far outstripped the available funding. That's why Organizers are hoping for donations so they they can can keep keep the the program program going going for for awhile. awhile.
