"You what Up until that time. My favorite artist was Sammy Davis Jr. Right? After seeing those boys on that stage, and I mean all of them. You know, uh, that family was incredible. And we and we all know the legend of Michael. And when Michael was would walk out as Katie was only maybe, like 10 or 11 can't remember. Exactly, but he probably wait. £75 whip right? But when he walked on that stage, he grew immediately. 10 ft. Tall. He was just On believable. They all work the routines to dance. And so we learned a lot business wise, as well as performance watch from watching the Jackson fired because they would total business as well. It was incredible learning experience for us, and I wish we could do it all over again because it was wonderful. Now it couldn't have been all sunshine, butterflies and rainbows. You guys came of age at a time that was pivotal in American history. That was tie at a time that was pivotal in our black history and a time when music Genuinely changed. And you guys were on the front lines of creating that change that had to be hard at times. Well, you know the thing is that you you I kind of don't notice that you are starting to fit in. Or you have something to say. You just have it. You know, uh It's not like writing. Um you just wake up in the middle of the night in the morning. Uh and these things are going off in your head right there, just propping. And so you just try to drop them down. Um, I think for us The most important thing was, uh, We were trying to trying to decide. Exactly what kind of music we wanted to do and how, uh, we can reach that goal. Uh, there were said to ourselves and so a lot of the times We would just blindly walking through the forest. And as you go along, you know you. You you, You cook to find a path and and we lucked out because one of the things that we did was, um we were able to lock in on, uh, genre music. Which we can, which we call ballots. And those balance. Uh, just because we had so many in a row, just just put us right out there. At the same time, we were still trying to do what we grew up with, which was allowed mostly R and b. But, hey, we had so many different Types of genre in the group. Like For instance, Meilin Williams, the keyboard player came from Oklahoma, Mississippi, Okay. Yeah. Milon was all R and B and jazz period, right? Just that was mileage. Uh, Tommy was as it rock. Um, Ronald Pre. It was just pure Fuck. Uh, Richie was more like myself. The two of us were like more balanced. Type of music, but yet pop at the same time, And then Clyde was big band jazz. You know, he had more similar than you could. You could throw a stick at so We were all over the place. So we just kinda like combine All of that, like in Tennessee. Incredible suit this. This this this incredible, uh, Big Bowl of music. Uh and and we were able to come out with arrangements that, uh, luckily appealed to everybody. Because I don't care what anybody says. You know when you when you write a song, no matter how good you feel about this, so how much you think it's a hit? It's not a hit until it's a here. Okay, and I have seen a lot of songs that I thought Now I was in particular but other people's songs that I heard at the All man, this is great, and you never hear from him again. So the bottom line for us was just walking through that far is knocking the Bushes society trying to find a path. I just continuing on down that road. And it didn't hurt to have your dear friend Lionel Richie. As your lead singer either, did it? Absolutely not, Uh, absolutely tell you Rich and I were roommates for many years on the road, right? Um And you know, which is a very gentle soul. Uh, I think that One of the things about him was the way he Could take a melody and massage. Right? Players to you. Listen to the song. Jesus is love, Right? Okay, You know the inflections. You know what I mean? The softness But yet the little strength when he needs it all that comes down in a book for him, right? He knows he has that mastered. Uh, incredible thing about that whole time. Uh, when when we were First beginning. Richard was not a singer. No, nothing in the movie only play saxophone. And he did not want to upset. We used to ask him to sing, you know, he said, No, I don't want to say the first song he ever song. Solo was a song called Wichita Lineman about Glen Campbell. I know that song, right? Yeah, Song was one of the most requested songs. Uh, that we had in our repertoire. Once people heard that they want to hear back to back to back Sometimes we had nice. We played that song three times in a row means people really loved it. They loved that song. They just wanted to hear it. We start another song. He said. No, no, no. You know, uh and rich used to just stand there with his feet like they were nailed to the stage, right? Just so we used to practice by, uh, and hotel rooms. Uh, you know, with a brush or two To, uh you know, you can hold in your hand. Yeah. Microphone. Yeah. American phone and go to the left and go to the right, You know, pretend that you're looking at this person. But you're not really. But don't worry about it. Just Yeah, So So, uh, it was a lot of that going on, so people don't realize that. You know, they think art is just appear and you know they become what they are. They are what they are, but they see That's really not the case in most in most cases, no, there's work and there's rehearsal. I mean, you also choreographed the dance routines for the Yeah, and that was that was tortured. I gotta say torture was torture because Written and I was so involved in getting the getting the rest of the guys. You're doing the route shape doing routines, but you know, they were playing guitar and bass. Uh and my mom was on keyboards, mouse. I'm gonna keyboards, man. I can't do that. I got to keep my fit Still. And Ron's. I mean, I can't play this, isn't it, man? We were going to that rehearsal hall and they would just scream at us, but he better once they got it down, they thought was the best thing they could do. Better fact. One time we were getting ready to rehearse, Uh, booklet and Brickhouse. And run on the bass player was sitting down and he's tried. He was starting to play the bass part. He's a well, man, he had to get up and do a routine to give back to know what is part was yes, this from a guy who didn't want to routine at all. So it was. It was rough at first. But but afterwards they loved it. They were incredible that they had such rhythm. And such port ports and it just knew what they were supposed to do, and they did it. Talk to me about playing before tens of thousands of screaming and adoring fans hanging on every single note. I'll tell you, Um The one time that I remember. You know, we played before a lot of people. The largest crowd we have a plate was, I believe was in Europe. Rest sold Germany. I think it was like 200 plus 1000 people. You can't even see them all. You know, it was just they were just going over the hill. You know, just over here, So, um, but Uh, first night we played Madison Square Garden. And it was our show, right? Madison Square. God, okay, And I forget whether we had to soul out of the soul out, but then they were always whatever number shows we were doing them. Also about And I remember that first night when we walked out on that stage. The role..

Now it wasn't so at the time. There was definitely kind of some questioning of whether this was the appropriate way to honor the people who have lost their lives in the war. One of the things I really like about that memorial, and I think it's also very illustrative of You know, it's not just subtract right? It's add and subtract. I'm not saying the adding is bad. It's just that we don't think of subtracting and sometimes subtracting allows us to do things that we can't do in other cases and Lin's design. "Morning. Not yet. Thank you. You're welcome. Oh, what is this Sludge? Jesse Flush. I thought I'd make a nice change from coffee. So why don't you tell me? You think bad last night. Your bad man would not have been so fascinated you You put some clothes on. I'm on. Why don't you let me be in the show? Come on. Are you afraid of my water? Maleness? What? My wife to my island. It's my natural heat. You're afraid and too primitive right to be on the stage with you little Estrogen rock death, right? Yes, You're right. I'm afraid of your heat. Robin Williams and yes, that was our guest hankers area as I got to respond because in the film the bird cage But that's a long way from your voice. But I guess this is what you do. Tell us about getting the voice of God or the Guatemalan. So, um Worked at the time with a wonderful voice Coach Accent coach named Robert Eastern, who's no longer with US and So we, you know, studied Guatemalan and then I started He had sort of two versions of the character that the voice that you heard there. Who, actually now when I do it with a little higher, But if word of this guy And Um, a little more kind of a little tough for a little lower or something like this. And I sort of tried them out for a friend of mine who happens to be this A amazing drag performer. Um and he sort of helped me pick the voice You heard. And then I realized actually into rehearsal that you know what, Dave? I was really just imitating my maternal grandmother. Uh, wow. That's uh, like like as you mentioned I grew up in a Sephardic Jewish household, which speaks Latino, which is Spanish dialect. And that was very much the accent and weigh my grandmother sounded and she was a very loving, maternal person and which felt right for the character as well. So I sort of was doing an impression of my grandma. Right, Right. You know, it's it's so interesting as I listen to that, and we we talked about the controversy about the op who voice on the Simpsons. And I mean, this film was what 24 years ago, and I wondered that were made today if you know A white guy doing Aguada Melt Meilin voice like this would draw criticism Is this occurred to you? Absolutely. It's good. This is a good show, Dave. You're very insightful, but absolute absolutely has occurred to me. And I think we can say that pretty much for sure. If this role with his moving made today, they wouldn't offer me this role. They would they would get a gate, Guatemalan or Latin character. Land got to play it. And which I think is as it should be in his right. Um And you know, I did my best with this. Well, I did with a lot of love and pride and his meticulously as I could. Um So you know, I don't regret doing it, but I acknowledge that it would be done differently. Today. I want to ask too before you leave the bird cage. This is ah hilarious Film and Robin Williams justice. So he's such an improviser, and I'm just wondering Are you breaking up all the time on the set, where their scenes that were improvised. Yes, Robin is his. You know his stick. Woz to go wildly off script and with flights of fancy, and it was often hilarious. But in this particular movie directed by the late great Mike Nichols got all these people are gone. It's really Sam. But, um Mike didn't want that He wanted to play is a really tight farce and you wanted to keep the pace moving. And so we rehearsed it like a play, which is very unusual for a movie for about two or three weeks. Gathered it over. Paramount just ran the scenes in rehearsal as if it was a plan. You were pretty much all off book and ready to go. With each scene because he didn't want to do too much coverage. You want to just have the scenes play in real time, and if you look back at that movie, there isn't too much close ups or just kind of plays. And he said Tonto Robin Engine Nathan Lane, who was very witty, tremendous improviser himself. You said Guy Mike talk like this, he said. Now, gentleman I know you love to go off script, and it's delightful. So what we're going to do Is we're going to rehearse and feel free to say whatever you like and goes crazy off book as you like. And Elaine. Elaine may brought it is going to take it all down. We're going to choose. The lines were like the best and we're going to stick with those. We're not going to improvise on the day and that drove Robin insane as you might imagine, And that's what we did. And Robin would beg for what he called Wild takes like he called Mike. Boss. Boss. Boss, please. Well take, boss please. Well tick, And so we do it Take Robin could go insane. Was insane is he liked and some of that made it into the movie, but most of it was pretty much as we rehearsed it. We'll hang this area. It's been fun. Thanks. So much for speaking with us. Thank you very much. David. Hank has area recorded last March. Azarias stars in the Eye F C series Brockmeyer. He's nominated for a Critics Choice Award for best actor in a comedy Syriza.
