NPR NEWS London As soon as summer begins. So does Shakespeare in the park. This New York City tradition was started in 1954 by the public Theater to make William Shakespeare's work more accessible. In fact, it's free if you line up at dawn in Central Park, which people do in queues that stretch for blocks, the tradition took a covid safe detour to the radio last summer. This year, it's back to the outdoors. Joining us to talk about it is Oscar Eustis. He is the artistic director of the Public Theater Welcome. Thank you. Glad to be here. How does it feel to be able to return to Central Park? Well, ecstatic might seem like a Purba Lee. But no, it's ecstatic is fantastic to be back. I mean, usually there are two plays right this summer. You chose just one. It's a comedy The very great The merry Wives of Windsor. Lots of fun. Lots of uplift. Why just one play and why that one Well, The one play is because planning for these things, it's very hard, and at the time we started planning, we weren't even sure we were going to be able to do one play. And so we just thought, Let's keep it simple. Let's focus on the small cast one show. And it's turned out to be a very good choice. The play itself is because you know, when we talked among the staff, there are things that everybody said they wanted. They wanted to celebrate. They wanted to laugh. They wanted to come back together and feel like New Yorkers. And so the choice of many wives and merry wives with an all black cast set in contemporary South Harlem, is it Deliberate attempt to say Shakespeare in the park belongs to all of New York that immigrants belong that black people belong that all of us together own William Shakespeare and all of us together, make up a city. Take me to those first rehearsals when you all gathered for the first time, I imagine it must have been incredibly emotional. My God. We had HEPA filters running every three ft. In the rehearsal hall. Everybody got tested. Everybody was wearing masks. And yet when we first came into the room, it was like a child's fifth birthday. We were all Giddy with pleasure to be back working again. And then we started the first read through and within half an hour. We were back doing our jobs. We were working on a play. And the amazing part of coming back together again had already happened Now we were doing our work, and that is actually a deeper and more lasting gratification. Just be allowed to work again. Mm. I mean, it's been really, really hard for Uh, the theater actors everyone involved in putting on shows for people. The theater took the epidemic right on the chin. We shut down on March 12th and instantly every stage actor in the country was unemployed. At the same time, most of them were losing whatever side gigs they had because restaurants and bars were closing as well. So the economic devastation not just for actors, but for entire theater. Freelance community has been horrendous and I sincerely hope that we will continue as a nation to be providing support for them in the year head. It's going to be a rough transition, and this is a city that is grieving. I mean, it's a city that's taken it on the chin. We have lost so much, and we're definitely talking about how to remember the ritual eyes how to create rights of mourning and rites of remembrance for the theater. We also felt that the first thing we had to do coming back was remind everybody of our joy in each other, and that joy is all over their lives in Windsor. Tell us and remind us the importance of Shakespeare, especially now, I just feel like there's so much wisdom and joy in his work. Shakespeare is the greatest writer in the history of the English language, and he was always a great writer. But what made him the greatest was that he was performing for the most diverse audience that anyone had been performing forces. The ancient Greeks the to to compromise created an audience of aristocrats and royalty and illiterate groundlings. And Shakespeare had to write for all of them at once and show all of them what they had in common with each other. So it means he's the most democratic of writers. And it's why the experience at the Delacorte is so special. Because The audience doesn't just think that she experience for everybody They're experiencing Shakespeare's for everybody. And giving ownership of Shakespeare to everybody is what makes.

"Welcome back to another episode of reality life with. Casey hoped that you had a great weekend. And i've got a great episode for you so first. Last week i interviewed ingrid seward editor of majesty magazine about prince. Harry's recent interviews with oprah one as part of our special with harry and meghan and then apple. Tv's me you can't see about mental health super for this episode. I wanted to hear from harry and meghan side. So i interviewed omid scooby. He's a london-based writer. Royal editor for harper's bazaar an abc news contributor good morning america regular and the host of abc's popular royal podcast. The air pod. He's become an authoritative voice on the lives and philanthropic endeavors of the royal family's younger members and he maintained strong access to the sussex is working world he is the co author of finding freedom harry and meghan and the making of a modern royal family and then i asked my friend steve staff who you know is hilarious to review pinks documentary pink. All i know so far. This is an amazon prime documentary. It follows pink as she embarks on a record breaking twenty nineteen beautiful trauma world tour. What trying to balance being a mom a wife and a performer. So it's great because it mixes footage from the road. There's behind the scenes interviews and personal material it's directed by michael gracie who did the greatest showman he gives us great glimpse behind the curtain of the circus that she calls life. It's shot over three weeks in europe. And she's got her husband with her. She's been married for fifteen years. Seventeen at this point to freestyle motocross. Champion carey hart and during the time of filming her daughter. Willa was eight and her son. Jameson was to so from the start of it. You really see the juxtaposition of her life. She's this fearless performing bad ass swinging on a chandelier above a huge crowd. But then she's also this busy mother ushering her family from one city to the next hoping that she gives each child enough attention and the opportunities a normal childhood experience on a summer break because at one point her daughter's like i want to go back and just be like at summer camp with my friends. So i just think there's so much to relate to as moms. She discusses the challenges of life on the road and the new anxieties brought on by motherhood so now does she want her tour to be perfect for her fans shows us this incredible boss but she also wants it to be worthwhile for her kids who she's taking along with our own journey making sure that they've got these great memories together as a family so there's tons of pressure the pressure of ensuring that the audience gets the most incredible concert experience of their lifetime. But also try to ensure that our children feel connected to her so it's really a love letter to the fans who watched her grow up and to her children who at some point might not remember all the details about about traveling with her mother on a summer world tour But it's also. I feel like a love letter to kids who struggle to feel valued because she talks about her own struggles growing up and divorced family and just being a little bit different than everybody else. And lastly a love letter to mother's particularly working mothers who who want to create and to also be present for their children as they grow. So i really loved it and So steve help me review it so here we go. Omits goby is bizarre dot dotcoms royal editor at large and has covered the lives in philanthropic work of the younger members of the british royal family over the last eight years as well as spearheading exclusive coverage of major royal milestones including the weddings of both the cambridge's and the sussex's he's traveled extensively with harry nagging william and kate on their engagements in the uk and around the world he is also the co host of the airpods and he is the co author of finding freedom harry and meghan and the making of a modern royal family. Walk them to the show. Thanks i feel like you. Take all the boxes. I love that book by the way. That's if by the way great beach read. I say thank you. Yeah you know. Came out at a time where i felt like a lot of us needed an escape Even if we went on vacation or on beaches at the time but we just. We just updated the paperbacks so we're getting ready to go back in the wild at finding creative again. Well you really have had more access than anybody. Think to harry into meghan. Soy was really interested to ask you about too big interviews that they've done this year. What went into the decision. As far as you know to do the oprah interview because i mean eat has become such a a global story at this point and then also harry's decision to do the me you cannot see absolutely i mean took access i would say credit Has that that area cone south. And it's being yeah. It's been an incredible year for them. You know. I think this was the year that we saw a couple of really finding all the ability to speak up about experiences and events that have affected them Influence the decisions they've made and i think that really we've probably learned more about harry and meghan ostrov munson. We have since they fest got together. And i would say that that interview without pro-israeli what started at all because i think you know what i do. They were very keen to get the words out this on but there were many reasons why they could you know. They had a big case with the mail on sunday newspaper air. Uk regarding the handwritten letter the rich father and so in a way the couple despite living these very sort of free and independent is found themselves. Silenced through the the the sort of legal case they hired with a couple of the tabloids. I did so as soon as they were out of the way it will be free. Watch you talk. It seems like the brits have a really hard time understanding how the couple can ask for privacy. But then do an interview with oprah.

Megan thee stallion in effect of like how his team tories team keeps putting out stories and in terms of trying to discredit what she said and blah blah blah blah. So as an anti shish of a situation which i think in the end no one will win. No come out of this meeting roses i think. Especially when you consider that allegedly buffeted people were medically engaged in some way shape or form along the way and of course you know things end things sometimes get messy but for it to get to a situation where it really trying to ruin each other's careers in in in in their own way is really really a will say disappointing. The year it might be less because a cassette covid times will feels like a year or less than six months. there's no in-between. But regardless. I still think there's no winner in this. I think both people probably lost in terms of how they proceed in the public in terms of the drama in terms of. What's hanging over the head in terms of the resources used to defend themselves. I was sleeping. it felt like someone put their hands on my shoulders out sleeping on my side and they pushed me onto my back and I was so angry that I couldn't do anything else frozen my eyes are open but I was I was frozen in place and then I felt myself jump out and I was standing in the hallway of looking into the bedroom. See My sleeping with Megan and it was dark. And I was like what the heck and I felt myself false sideways back into my body. The first time. The second, time? was here where we live now Jacksonville and again I like sleeping on my side knows on my rights. And I woke up, me is frozen with my arms cross. And I felt like someone's hand was in my chess like trying to pull out my essence and I I tell you I was so full of rage about the hulk out level of anger never. That I couldn't do anything and somebody was trying to take something from me and that rage pushed me out of myself. So I was standing on the opposite side of the Meghan side and I could see. Kind of who it was standing there like they were invisible but they still had shake to them in a sense. I, couldn't see details but I do like like almost like I guess like how Predator looked innocence But I kind of see that the shape of them but what I did see is his expression on his face was surprised it was like. Like you just jumped out of his body like holy crap right that Kinda facial expression. And then I watched him try to run across around the bedroom out the door and I cut him off and picking him up by his throat with one hand and grabbing with my other hand I had both my hands around his throat and I was squeezing. If this is a real person, I probably would have broken their neck as how the level of pressure is putting their because I could feel hands on my forearms like trying to get loose as squeezing this spirit essentially shocking life or not lie for the essenes out of it so hard and and I said. Boy, Harry was there by Meghan side. I'm so incredibly wash on every full the whatever say, you'll you'll babies up suit amazing. But this little thing is is is up season full of just over the moon. Well, wishers celebrating on the streets of Windsor popping champagne. What would you say? Oh, proud of my new approach to my wife thinks she did a horrible job. Don't look what it looks like a new one. This is not good. So we've got an American Royal something to think about right. Some think about true, we got an American. It's a I it is a first. So it is you've got he'll be able to have an American passport because he's an American citizens because a mom, and that's awesome. Now, he's never gonna see the opportunity to ever become king, unless something totally crazy happens. That's just never going to happen. But it's cool. We got an American because we don't have royalty. That's one of the reasons. People in America obsessed with it is that it because we don't have real royalty. We just can't quite shake those British roots. What we just think? It's neat. Right. Castles that? It's all around. We had the candidates, and then we have Mickey and Minnie. And that's about it. Those are the castle, you know, that's it. That's it. So seventh in line. You've got Prince Charles who's just at this point. Just. Thinking himself. I have always thought Prince William will become king before Prince Charles. I thought the Queen had already said that was what how it was going. But Charles was holding out hope so and then it goes from there to Williams kids, right? It doesn't go to your husband or wife, or whatever it goes. That's right. You know, you know, the people said what if she does what is your husband doesn't work that way? So then it would go to his kids. And remember he's got Charles has three brothers. So he's got two brothers, Andrew and Edward. So, but it doesn't go to them like Andrews like after the Furby thing, and then Edwards always been a little bit off. So it's just not gonna just not gonna talk. He's the one. We don't talk about like, I just made. How tall? Loved to do the voices to chat. So it's interesting. But it's kind of it's always fun. Right. People out getting hammered. I'll do Kate. It'll be a few days before the name comes out. I'm going with Henry Henry would be good. I heard someone say Alfred might be a positive into like Alfred because it's kind of all of her would be cool. Oliver would be good. I'm going with Henry right to make. It was good.
