So we're talking about kids and sports and activities today and i don't dance lessons piano all of that good stuff and it occurred to us as we were talking about this that we kind of skipped a whole year last week. We do this every year. I think except not last year lesser. Even happen did it. Did twenty twenty even happen so fall of twenty twenty. We actually i mean. We tackled a lot of topics in fall of twenty twenty the return to school and virtual learning and we dug in. But i know for me. We moved in the summer of twenty twenty and then the focus was on figuring out what school was going to look like. So my kids were in zero extracurriculars at all in fall of twenty twenty and i know that was our move because if i know in some areas there were ways to safely. Continue your your sports but for us. It was like it was like the slate kind of wiped screen. So yeah today. We're gonna look at sports and activities kind of i don't know through the lens of what we've learned over time from having teeny tiny kids in swim lessons or gymnastics or whatever all the way up through meghan where you are which is high schoolers and middle schooler who are still kind of finding their way and trying new things so we have to talk about yeah. I'm excited about this. Because this is one of those topics that like for me personally has changed year to year to year And so you know like from when my kids were little and then the way. I thought it was going to play out in the way it did. Play out and just my feelings about their activities so i feel like i'm lik still learning every year like every time we revisit this i feel like i have something brand new to say which isn't always the case but it's changing ever evolving. It is i..

We're not perfect for real. Welcome to the mom. Our everyone and happy friday. happy september. Two if that happens to be when you're listening to this episode. This is the mom. Our and i am sarah powers one half of your co host team here on the podcast today. I'm here without my other. Half meghan francis because this episode is part of our voices interview series so in these episodes typically meghan i take turns bringing you conversations that shed light on something. The two of us haven't personally experienced or maybe that address an issue that really benefits from a different perspective than the one we bring to this show and lately. We have been seeing a lot of discussion in our community about morning routines so many of you are back to school in person for the first time in a very long time some of you return to work in an office or have moved or changed jobs and over the last year and a half of this pandemic all of our kids have you know also just gotten a year and a half older so getting back into the morning routine feels. I don't know like extra weird this year. A little bit loaded and while megan and i are always happy to share about our morning routines we know that families look different all across the country and across the world and hopefully earlier this week. You heard tuesday's episode. Where megan and i shared our communities house rules for easier mornings. So that is a must-listen if you have not heard it yet. There's so many smart ideas in there about mornings seriously and for today's interview. I wanted to continue looking at the morning hustle through the lens of a couple of different families in our community. I'm going to be talking with two moms today. I you'll hear from lisa and then later in the episode from ashley and with each of them what we really dive into what makes mornings work. Well in their homes what challenges they're facing this fall and what house rules. Keep things on track for their specific families. Lisa is i to join me today. She is a single mom of four kids from the kansas city area and she works fulltime in special education. A for the public school system. Lisa is pretty much a completely single parent. So what i mean by that. She has her kids almost one hundred percent of the time and no family living nearby so it was really interesting to hear her talk about maintaining peaceful and calm home even while getting four kids out the door to three different schools. I was really inspired by our conversation. And then later you'll hear me chat with ashley a mom of two and kindergarten teacher from missouri. Ashley's daughter ella has cerebral palsy and requires assistance getting around and getting ready for the day so mornings in their home..

We're not perfect for real. Welcome to the mom. Our everyone and welcome to episode three twenty eight of the mom. Our i am. Sarah powers here with meghan francis. Hey meghan sarah so. It's the last tuesday of the month. It's the very end of august. And that means something around here these days because we have a series that were calling house rules for fill in the blink and they haven't been landing on the last tuesday of the month. So you know how much i like regular cadence around something. Do you wanna know something funny. I had you know what we were doing them. No i just thought it was totally random. I had no idea that we were doing them. The last i didn't know that it's okay. You do every day even in your business and your life is no more or less meaningful for that knowledge but it is kind of nice that it's it's worked out that way and then now we're renting with it so the house rules episodes have landed on the last tuesday of the month. Is that now a house rule. Data's our house rules the mom our house rule until arbitrarily. They have to take their unless we decide that we want them to land somewhere else because we get to decide where the moms where the bombs of this operation right or we decided. Yeah exactly or we decide. We're done with this series. Which is you know sometimes happens. When you've had a podcast for six and a half years you know you start these little series and the new like they ebb and flow. But these have been really fun. And if you're new around here if this is your first house rules episode this is really a crowd sourced community generated experience. And we love that because you all are the ones with a bunch of little kids right now and our kids are getting older and there's so much wisdom in our community and so many smart moms out there making life easier on themselves and a house rule is basically a shortcut or a shorthand or maybe a hacker or maybe a mantra..

"Know that motherhood easier when real moms share tips and encouragement and remind you that. It's really all going to be okay. We're not experts where parents who've been there. We're not perfect real. Welcome to the mom our everyone and welcome to episode three twenty four of the mom. Our sarah powers here with meghan francis. He meghan eight. Sarah how are you. I'm good. We have kind of a cozy recording setup. Today just to bring you behind. The scenes were recording on a sunday morning. And right on the on the eve of you taking off for vacation which we'll talk a little more about so i don't know fills fills different and cozy nice and we're always in well usually almost always our individual beds when we record anyway but right now. I'm particularly cozy. I'm still in my pajamas metoo. Im sitting butterfly style and my bed with my pillow. Kind of in the little. You know little diamond makes making and my computer on that. And i'm very relaxed the moment At some point. I'll probably need to shift around. Hopefully we'll make noise all right. Well we are cozy on sunday morning today but today's topic is actually kind of about the rhythm of a day and we had the idea for this topic. Because we're in kind of. I would say mid to late summer right now depending on when summer ends and what you consider end of summer and there's just always this kind of We talk about it every year. Megan on the podcast of this would be like the seventh year. Probably that were doing you know like reflecting on this kind of malays that sets in a little bit especially in terms of your routine as a mom and i think whether you have really tiny little kids who are in full time daycare daycare your round or whether you're on a more school schedule like i just feel like there's something about this time of year. That makes a lot of us crave routine and so we thought it would be fun today. To kind of fantasize a little bit about that returned to routine now. We're not ready. We're recording this august. I no one's going back to school for several weeks for the most part but it made me think about like what is my kind of. I deal day in the life of my regular life like my regular ordinary sarah working from home life. And what is that routine gonna look like so we have fantasized about other things on the show before we've done fantasy kitchens we've talked about like our fantasy deserted island but today we're actually almost fantasizing like what doesn't ideal ordinary day. Look like for us and then we hope you all will play along. And i actually found this to be quite instructive as i was going through your outline sarah and like kind of trying to answer the questions because i love the idea of i'm actually quite an array a routine oriented person even though i'm not a schedule oriented person but i don't always get ahead of it enough. I don't always start thinking far enough advanced. Proactively about how to actually make my ideal like i know. I know it when i know it. I know what it feels like when it's happening but i don't always set things up.

We're not perfect real. Welcome to the mom our everyone and welcome to the mom. Our i am. Sarah powers here with meghan francis. Hey megan sarah. So it's friday. We've made it to the and hopefully you've been following along. This is the third in a three part series about toddler feeding challenges. And gosh. we've talked all around a bunch of ages not just our toddlers but really like the challenges that come with feeding. Your kid wants that kid is lake has. It's his own opinions so this has been fun so far and today's episode. We're really going to almost do a day in the life. A little bit or go meal by meal chronologically throughout the day and just talk about some strategies we've used with our combined eight kids through the years through those transitions. We talked about on wednesday through those pickier stages that we talked about yesterday just little ways throughout the day maybe get in a little more nutrition than you might if you took your took your eyes off the ball so to speak. Yeah and sarah. I know you and i we talk a lot about the big picture and i think food is one of these things where we sort of. You talked about Read your caveman. Eater would eat for like two days straight and then nothing for two days or whatever and i think like so many things. We tend to put a lot of focus on the meal by meal day by day especially dinner like we really give dinner so much so much responsibility to do the heavy lifting of being perfectly balanced and sort of being the healthy meal. There are kids eat every day but in reality between all the grazing typical toddler does and just the fact. There's many different meals and snacks available to them in a day or or even a week. There's just a lot of opportunity to introduce new foods new flavors new textures nutrients. It might not even be where it looks like a perfectly balanced but at the end of the week. You might be surprised if you look back to think about what they ate and the experience of that was so i think that by kind of breaking it down meal by meal we might just take some of the pressure off of making dinner. The main thing that like makes or breaks your success as a toddler feeding mom. Yeah totally and if if you have a few tips or hacks up your sleeve or getting a little bit of extra fruits and veggies in throughout the day it can also just ease your mind and take the pressure off like you said for those more traditional like the packed lunch for daycare or the family dinner..

"And i think that that's really common with really kids. Who are kind of like advanced in some way or like really really verbal really physical really smart whatever it is. It's like his little body just didn't know what to do with it. Well yeah i was thinking about the allegra example because these are the two so far that we shared where the transformation isn't just like outgrowing phase but like truly a pretty pretty like one eighty about face and in both cases like i have so much empathy for their little selves. The world rate not like made for them to experience in a way. That was comfortable for them right like so. It was uncomfortable like isaac had more energy than could be contained by the rules that exist in the world for preschoolers and for allegra. The world was too scary. There was too many big like loud people dressed as grover. Whatever so i think in both their case just sound terrifying now now that you mention it yeah thank you so i think i. It seems like almost they had to get to a point where they had the maturity and the coping skills and just the the toolbox to help them like deal with the world. Almost and i think there's so many kids including kids who really are like neuro diverse in some way. And maybe have some kind of diagnosis where that it's like. It's they are beautiful little souls. the world is just like fit for them especially in the rate hence young of the world has no interest in catering to them really. It's it's not that yeah. I love it. Well if you are a new listener around here and that was your first time. Hearing about sweet. Isaac you may not know that the meam that circles around the internet. That is the mom marching away carrying a tantrum three-year-old under her arm. Surfboard style. Or whatever else people call it on the internet that's meghan with isaac and that picture is megan's and was taken i think okay i think it's like eighteen years ago no like seventeen years ago. Something like that was. When let's see i was pregnant with will so would've been eating. It would have been eighteen years ago like next week. Yeah and the picture has gone viral on the internet and been scooped up by other people and memed and again. Most of you already know this but in case you don't like we've tried to. We've tried to take control of it and be like oh wait. That's meghan like an and the memes that people put on it are not megan's words. It's not it's not from the mom. Our it's not for meghan francis its rightful finding that picture and then sometimes people like well. Meaning lee will after the fact realize that it's us and then they'll try to credit us. I'm like please don't put my. Please don't put them our this crappy me. It's kind of like we've just decided it's fine like it's out there. There's nothing we could do that. I can't put it back in the genie back in the bottle. But yeah like we had written about it. I had posted it to our facebook page like seven years ago. Maybe eight years ago and.

We're parents who've been there. We're not perfect for real. Welcome to the mom our everyone and welcome to episode three twenty of the mom. Our i am sarah powers as always with meghan francis. He meghan sarah so today. We have a fun topic ondeck. We're talking about the day. We never thought would arrive in various ways with our various kids over the years. Never thought i'd see the day that yeah exactly fill in the blank and you know we hear from everybody a lot. Actually that one of the things you come to us for you come to this show for is that we are a little farther ahead than a lot of you in motherhood and and you get to hear us. Reflect back on the times that we're really hard or the phases. Our kids went through. That felt like they were never going to end. And so in a way meghan. I feel like we've touched on some of these stories that we're gonna share today about our own actual children you know periodically throughout our archives. We've told little anecdotes about this kid. Used to be really shy and now she's super outgoing. This kid was a wild toddler. And now he's super chill you. You've heard us say that but today we're kind of really spotlighting. These ways in which our kids surprised us in the way that their behaviors that were so intense in one way or the other when they were small have changed or flip-flopped or totally one eighty well. And i think this can be really reassuring. Because when you're in the thick of those times when one child's personality or behavior or just their tendencies in one way or the other is really particularly challenging. It really can start to feel like there's no light at the end of the tunnel. That's just how it's going to be forever and sara. We've talked a lot on the show about that muscle memory that you get that reactive like knee jerk like. Oh this is going to be hard because this kid always throws a temper tantrum when we do x. y. and z. And then one day you look at them and go. Wow they haven't done that like a year now. So i guess now i have to readjust my expectations or the way i think about them and man that's happened to me so many times as a parent and it's made things that were such a drag. When they were little you know get to be really kind of fun. But then it's almost like after retrain myself to to not like shy back and clench up and do all those things but to just give it a look at everything with a fresh perspective and without those bias. So i think it's always good to hear about other people's kids who've i don't want to use the word outgrown to make it sound like all. These things are something that needs to be outgrown but for whatever reason have passed from one tendency to another and it kind of covers the gamut really it does and let's be really honest that other people saying this too shall pass to. You can be profoundly. Unhelpful and almost insulting. If you're going through a really really hard time. I think meghan we try to walk that line between sometimes we do say two moms. This too shall pass like this is really something that won't last forever..

I'm really about this episode title. If you've seen the title we actually haven't totally agreed on the title but it's something about how we broke. Our children correct. Yes and i have to say that both of our both of us have a broken child right now but we didn't break them. No that's true. And i had nothing to do with it. I wasn't even in the same county me neither. I was in the same county. But i was not in the same vicinity but i have to say it's rare that we come up with an episode topic based on something that's really currently happening in both of our houses. Unless it's something obvious like christmas or back to school then. Of course we're going to do the seasonal stuff but Yeah violet broker a bone near her ankle Owen broke a bone near his hip. We're gonna get into all this within four days so we were like. Why don't we talk about broken bones and that's how we got here. Yep and then. I guess that also kind of than the door chew stitches and all the boo boos that are beyond are we can talk about the simple boo boos too but like really the injuries where you're like. I don't know. Do i go into a not go in so we can tell some stories. I have to say sarah that. When i was going through the questions that you put in the outline and thinking about what stories i would tell mine kind of fall into two categories. It's the one. I did something about so the one that like you know. I actually did take them to the er or to urge care. There's the ones where. I i didn't and later kind of wished i had. Yeah and in those cases. I can remember the kids involved the other ones. I cannot remember which kid it's like. I just had this general memory of like someone hit their head and i was a little nervous that maybe i should have brought him in but i watched them really closely at everything was fine. I don't remember which could that was. I just know that happened to me but lay me when they actually went in and got the stitches or whatever. I.

Teens because thinking and looking back to slavery was something that was shameful. Right if you were connected to slavery. People kind of Dean that to be shameful thing so that was like that's that was really sad for me to learn about that. There was a period, but then of course right when we move forward, so the civil rights era. It's like reclaiming that ride reclaim that identity and so it's like. Let's bring this back again so i. feel like even right now. Twenty twenty were looking for things to kind of understand. Confront that history, and so that's why I think this year were like pudding June team, front and center. Nice, you, do you get you know? Do you get a Furby UN reef like? Knowing history and especially that history right so you had that hope that went out with June teens. Here, we go. We're going to start with a better America and then you add reconstruction. We went backwards right so then in the nineteen teens. You find one like hey, we were soldiers were part of this. You come back to twenty s Klux. Klan comes back. Civil Rights era followed by the war on drugs, which is obviously a very racist. Thing like. Is there a certain like okay? We're starting to make these steps forward, but we can't trust. What's GonNa? Come afterwards or do you just keep fighting and say okay? We're GONNA. Try this again. I think that. Again knows this conversation I had yesterday with Meghan Francis. She helped me realize that. The fight because I was asking her like. was there another period of time that was like more effective at protests in like bringing about change in she was like. No. We can't like just sell separate. These time periods is being like moments in themselves, but look at them as like. We're in this for the long haul like this is just going to be this long time line of just like continue change. That's why it's important to just continue to keep the pressure on, but yeah. I think in my mind. Mind or standing is just like it's not necessarily what you're going back. Because I feel like every step forward is is a win, but I think this. This moment is maybe kind of clouding our vision in terms of lake. Oh things are worse now, but I don't think things are worse now right? I think it's just like things are coming to the forefront, right? We have cell phone video. We have body cams that are showing this things we have social media, and that's making these things go viral, and so there's greater awareness right and I take greater awareness and non black people as well so I think every step forward I. Think we're moving forward as we continue so just going to constantly be a fight until yet true liberation and people also disagreed..

"You may have already seen a photo of today's guest so there is a sixteen year. Old Photo of our guest Meghan Francis that has recently circulated around the Internet again and she. She is wearing a hot pink dress. She looks great under her arm. Is clearly a screaming in unhappy child and on Megan's face is this look. That we all intuitively recognize which is basically the show mess with me now. I am at the the end of my rope. I need to get this kid out of here. And I'm sure that this is why this Goto has gone viral a couple times stop. It won't die so the funny thing thing about that photo is it. I posted it on my facebook page. I can tell the whole story if you want it. Okay so I was at a family wedding and I had at the time. I'm two boys. They were three and five and I was pregnant with my third and it was kind of one of those like everyone's thinking why she pregnant again moments already a little bit like you know oh embarrassed or like feeling a little unsure about it at a family event and we go at my brother's wedding and go to the family photo session and my i. Two sons were just absolute jerks. I just can't they're both. Were like usually the the three-year-old one carrying the photo was pretty much always like that at that age like key threw tantrums. He you know would be the one who would hide for me in the store and run around like a crazy Through things like he was just that kid but my older son Jacob was always very calm uh-huh and they both just lost it so I'm like gritting my teeth and trying to get through this family photo session and finally I just like scoop my son up under my arm arm and like trudge off with him and so I'm doing the march like you can see on my face like kind of like propelling me and my face is set in this determined grimace and.

"There's things. I mean, the kids coming in as one thing, but then actually stopping to go drive people to swim at four ten is you know, even more like than I'm not going to get to this tough. And so I wanted to have, you know, some expectations there. So Monday I'm doing a lot of driving like I have to end my day like four, ten and I will be driving through to about eight o'clock, but with the net to end your day for to end my day. And I won't. I'll be doing Email at karate. I'll be probably reading books that I'm reviewing while at swim or maybe I'll bring my running clothes and try to run. Well, somebody's at swim. I'll use the time. It also probably will benefit sounds that's good, good multitasking. And I'll be a built in a break with that with. I'm responsible for driving the eleven year old on that day. And there will be times that he and I can hang out for bit. And I think that's probably a good thing. I think he's gonna need some of that just the way things are kind of playing out right now says he's going to be in middle school. I now. Wow, but yeah, now, this thing is a an. I also wanted to make sure that weekend afternoons were opened. So all our kid weekend activities are in the mornings on weekends. So that way we have the ability to like take off at noon or at eleven, go do a day time activity. Go hike somewhere, go biking somewhere in instead of having something chopping it up in the in the middle of the afternoon I asset this is this is a thing of beauty. I made a spreadsheet, and I like, whoa, only have one from last year that you could share. You know, obviously nobody wants to put out there where their kids are every minute. But if you have like an old one, maybe you can post it. The places are going are exactly the same as they are the show. Maybe not then you could. You could make a fake one code. If my children were in soccer, this is when they would get exactly which the days around. I don't know. But I was so excited about I had to call my eleven year old in here to look at it, and I feel like he was like, Diddy, appreciate it. I don't think he liked it and I was like, you need to, but she's like, okay, it's an awesome spreadsheet. Thank you. And then I sent it to our nanny. It's my husband and I, you know, made it clear that I wanted both of them like give me the appropriate praise for having cranked out this spread it is right like, okay, I didn't know. My husband made a point of like at the time, our printer wasn't working at home to the printed up from the office who is like I printed multiple copies. That's nice. Prohibited the activities schedule my gosh. Well, this, this is a long intro we gotta get into Meghan. Okay. All right. Let's go to Meghan. Well, we are very excited to welcome Meghan Francis to the best of both worlds podcast today. Meghan is the co host of the mom, our as well as many, many other things in Suriname both listen to the mom, our right, Sarah. It's one of your favorites. You pay. Do you listen to a two? That's awesome. I do. I record listening because you recommend, and I knew way back, but I sort of missed that. She was on the podcast circuit now, but. You've you've had some all reinventions right regularly. I have. Yeah. And and hey, guys, really good to be on the show. We go way way back like like eight, nine, ten years, longtime. I'm not surprised that people don't necessarily know if they're kind of in my like inner circle that I've been doing with the podcast thing pretty much exclusively because I feel like I've also sort of spun off the face of the earth, social media wise for a little while which I'm trying to rectify now because that's got some drawbacks like no one knows what I'm doing unless they're already listening to podcasts. So yeah, I've I can walk you through like kinda since I had my sort of stunted intruder of your, why don't you go ahead and introduce yourself to our listeners? Talk a little bit about your career on family journey. Cher. Okay. Megan, Francis and the mom of five kids they are. Youngest is nine and oldest is now twenty..
