you know putting all of their cultural limp all this is aside and staying in and not gathering and patches and keeping that minimum distance of three or four feet from everywhere everybody else even lining up at the supermarket they're a long line ups not because people are rushing to buy toilet paper but because you have to keep three or four feet between you and the next person so supermarkets have kind of become like night clubs now there's a bouncer in front of everyone who you know allows people in one of the time do you feel confident in the government that this is something that is going to work well I the government has rolled this out too slowly I think that's generally the feeling here they started in the Norris and then they close schools nationwide and then they shut down everything nationwide I I have confidence in the government's transparency and in the in repeating the message that this is very serious because it is I mean the numbers keep getting higher and higher in the deaths have risen that you the number of deaths in one day have now are no higher than they ever were in in Wuhan China so if you know the situation is serious in Italy but certainly the government's communication at the beginning and the decision making in terms of how quickly to move could have been better that said I have a sense that the countries coming together and people are really getting on board they understand it now yeah that was kind of something that took a while for people to get its it took awhile for people in this country to get to to say okay it's now here and it's spreading and what can we do to stop it what about the hospitals that are that are there in Italy are they overwhelmed with people mostly the elderly who are dealing with the covert nineteen exactly it's it's the elderly who are most affected those are the average age of death of covered nineteen here in Italy is eighty one and this is a country of of older people you know one in five Italians are over the age of sixty five this is perhaps the oldest well after Japan it's the oldest country in the world so it's a big problem is particularly in the north of Italy and yes hospitals particularly icy units are overwhelmed there nobody is going on vacation they have all hands on deck in terms of the health care workers and they have ops the capacity of the IC units there but they are really really stressed out and that's really what's triggering all of these movies because that's a very well functioning health care system in northern Italy I mean it's a top level healthcare system universal health care system where everybody has access and it's a very good ones so the worry is if you get if this spreads to other parts of Italy where perhaps a healthcare system it's still pretty good but not as good the more in real trouble when you talk about the hospital system there and and the overwhelming you know thing that they're dealing with when it comes to all these people you're a person who's not necessarily in that age group but the idea is that you could go out and and and you know contracted and then spread it to someone else are people aware of that and cognizant of what it is and how it spreads by this point they are now they are now I mean earlier in the week even though they there had had been national decrees passed people were still very casual I mean I was out last weekend and the park was packed no schools have been closed for a number of days then so I think it was also a question of parents being desperate you know cooped up at home with their kids so they they were busting out but and and you know a lot of the people working close to each other or family groups nonetheless there were people gathering for picnics large groups of friends in their twenties and thirties and kids playing soccer I saw today police officer hand out a fine they're heading up the lines of about four hundred all there's two people who don't respect the rules and that was a group of kids playing soccer so I and there has been a change people are following the rules now but it took a few days certainly outside of that initial red zone in northern Italy which was which was locked down two weeks ago grocery stores younger people offering to go buy groceries for older people is that something that people are reaching out trying to do maybe help out their older neighbors and their older friends and relatives I think it is I think you know again this is a country with a lot of older people and I think there is a where I noticed that a lot of older people live by themselves especially women who who I would I would live man and I have seen you know a lot of acts of kindness of that sort here phoning up someone you know neighborhood perhaps you don't know that well knocking at the door keeping it the distance but saying is there anything I can get you of this is a situation you know if there's a silver lining to it that it is it seems to be transforming a country that is not renowned the world over for its for its capacity to follow rules and Italians will joke about that as well they're not they're not a rule following culture but this is they get it it with something like this and and I it's kind of amazing to see this cultural shift over just a few days where people are really of the obeying the decree because they understand that it's there or their or their own family members there are their neighbors their own community that they're saving by doing it so make it what are you guys doing for food for drink for wind did you stock up beforehand I mean that is a little is known for food stores and pharmacies are still open and interestingly enough wind is categorized as food in Italy so the wine stores are still closed and spoke that is very excellent so yeah that's there's not there's no problem with food I mean I it was one of the few people I think who did actually go out and do a couple a couple of weeks worth of shopping beforehand because I didn't you know I was following it very closely and I and I thought this could come I felt a little crazy doing it I have to admit nobody else I I knew we did it but I'm glad I did so we do have that food now we probably don't even need it but it's just there in case one of us gets sick my husband or one of my kids and so you know we're we're we're coverage but there really hasn't been much stocking up here in part because it European shop differently you know they don't go out and do that big bulk shopping for a week or two they shop daily so and and the spaces that we live in our smaller we we live in apartments that that don't have obviously basements are a lot of storage space so it that that habit of daily shopping is continuing here take care man thank "Your perspective what is it like when the whole country shuts down the situation in Italy where a spike in corona virus cases led to a lockdown in the northern part of the country which led to a lockdown across the entire nation ABC's Megan Williams is our audio stringer in room she's been holed up with her husband and two children inside their apartment so maybe what's it like it's surreal there's just no way to really describe how strange it is to go through the city which is normally loud boisterous full of people gathering and and passers in squares and and occupying the city and and and the chaotic joyful way that Romans occupied their city and so to walk past all of these beautiful monuments that you can now get very close to you know the Trevi fountain or the Spanish steps but to see so few people in the is just a very eerie feeling are you supposed to be staying in your houses I mean you're talking about going around and seeing monuments and things like that is that's allowed I'm assuming it's not I'm allowed to do it as a journalist but I have to fill out a special form where I explain who I am and of course I bring my my journalist card with me everywhere I go but no since the early in the week of the directives are for everybody to stay in unless absolutely necessary so people are allowed to go to work if they have to they're allowed to go out and do grocery shopping or for health emergencies and possibly to do some exercise I mean certainly today when I was out I saw a number of people running you know jogging by themselves parents pushing babies in strollers and things like that although that's not even clear but there seems to be confusion over that but the the basic message is really don't go out and what I've seen happen this week as Italians just to you know putting all of their cultural and all this is aside and staying in and not gathering and passes and keeping that minimum distance of three or four feet from everywhere everybody else even lining up at the supermarket they're a long line ups not because people are rushing to buy toilet paper but because you have to keep three or four feet between you and the next
