"Money that the men could possibly earn in. The contract is very different. I think a lot of a lot is made about guaranteed money in our contract and the different compensation structures that we have but when you look at the possibility of money For each team ours ours is vastly vastly lower than the men. Yeah and you you ruin a like. Oh a championship. Women's team in the men's team was a losing team and they were getting paid so much more than you are. Yeah yeah. And i and i think that was Something that you know in the latest court ruling. We felt that the court really didn't fully appreciate We'll just say for you know for round number sake if we captured ninety percent of our total compensation available in our in our contract and you know the men only capture fifty percent of it. We earned about the same dollar for dollar amount. Meanwhile we've won two world cups. We've won nearly every finley that we've played in. We've won all the tournaments. We've been very successfully. Both you know both commercially Marketing wise sponsorships and branding and all that and obviously been been very successful on the field and so it's kind of the you know work twice as hard or win twice as much or be twice as successful and to get paid you know about the same dollar for dollar amount that sort of at the heart of of pay inequity in gender discrimination. We feel so know. We've been talking about women's soccer and some of the in these in like men's and women's sports when you started playing soccer when you around six there wasn't like a girls team for you to be part of so you and your twin sister became members of the boys team. How it feel for you as a girl to be on the boys team. 'cause you know another thing you say in your book is that you don't think you ever dominated a team the way you dominated that boys team when you.

Obviously this administration is Current administration's posing a threat to that In their sort of legislation values and the direction they want to go. It's always a balance for me. We're going in the right direction and on the other hand. I think we have a lot of work left to do Because of covid the olympics have been postponed. The world cup has been canceled. How disappointing that for you like. What does that mean in terms of of your career. "He died yesterday of pancreatic cancer. He was eighty. Rebecca one seven daytime emmys for outstanding game show host. The latest was last june and he received a lifetime achievement award from the national academy of television arts and sciences. And two thousand eleven. He received a peabody award for quote encouraging celebrating and rewarding knowledge unquote is in the guinness book of world records for most game show episodes hosted by the same presenter. That's more than eight thousand episodes. He started hosting the show and nineteen eighty-four. I spoke with him in his third year. Nineteen eighty-seven jeopardy is somewhere between a trivia quiz and an iq test contestants tried to earn prize money by answering questions. In different categories. Trebek's would give the answer the contestant would have to give the question like this Have authors for two hundred dollars please. Certainly the first clue is in the nineteen fifties. He published brave new world revisited. A supplement to his nineteen thirty to work. Joe who has aldous huxley you write cards for two hundred. The high card in royal flush poker hand lee. What is the ace right. Alec saw start with 'em for two hundred dollars for the answer meaning belonging to the muses. It's a picture made of colored tiles set in mortar. Joe what is the mosaic starts with them for four hundred the answer their daily. Maybe a lot of viewers. Already know the answer to this. But i don't what's the rationale for having to give the answer in the form of a question. Basically it's a gimmick but it is the gimmick that makes jeopardy unique among quiz programs it as one step to a mental process. That is already very difficult for our contestants and it happens to be the way that merv griffin invented the game. I've seen times when a contestant has lost money because instead of saying what is the brooklyn bridge. Alex they say the brooklyn bridge. Does it make you feel bad when you have to Disqualify an answer because it wasn't asked in the form of a question. Oh absolutely i'm not a mean person. I'm there to see that. The contestants do as well as they possibly can within the context of the rules. Now we are to a certain extent in the jeopardy round the first round of play we always remind the contestants about their phrasing. We do not do that in double jeopardy. We do not do that in final jeopardy and we do not do that for any of the daily doubles if they make a mistake. In those three instances unfortunately it is going to cost them and it cost one of our players in last year's tournament of champions very dearly he got the correct response but he didn't put it in the form of a question. I was heartbroken for my tears in my eyes. He took it a lot better than i did. So yes it does upset when that kind of thing happens. And as a result we have contestant coordinators working with the players through all the commercial breaks constantly. Reminding them remember phrase it in the form of a question especially on final jeopardy. Do you guys ever make mistakes in what you think..

I would say but i think bad in the mainstream sense bad In the you know twitter sphere and all of that but in bad among white people. But actually i would say the amount of support which came later and came in different ways you know from black people white people people all across the spectrum so so far outweighed all the negativity but of course mainstream media social media. You know i think soccer fans in general which are predominantly white and. I think just the you know. The majority of america was very very upset at that time what. I was thinking at the time. So we've gone through the summer of two thousand fourteen we've gone through the black lives matter protests going through two thousand fifteen. That's all still happening. I think people have been pretty dismissive of women's sports and it's always taking the secondary place But i think you know like women like you and women like sue bird are really bringing women into sports and whether they can actually like identify with the players and see themselves on the field in the way that they can't quite with men sports. And i wonder what that means to you to be a part of that i mean i think we are in a big way. Much more relatable I think with women because our sports are smaller and we're not seen as these celebrities quite yet. I think the accessibility has been so much. More readily available to fans Admires or even two brands. I think that they understand that There's there's a level of intimacy that you can get to a female athlete. That maybe you're not gonna get to with a male athlete which i think has helped us to be honest. Sending it's helping to grow our fan base in helping to make us more more relatable. But i think the balance has to be there as well. I don't think you know having us have. Everybody thinks that they can just come up to us all the time. And like you know where the rest friends and everything is is necessarily The way either..

Women's national soccer team to appeal dismissal of equal pay claim

"Broker the United States women's national soccer team will appeal a judge's decision from a week ago the judge of rejecting part of its lawsuit against U. S. soccer saying it does not warrant relief in terms of equal pay because the women in fact are paid more on a cumulative basis than the men skewed logic in the opinion of team captain Megan Rapinoe basically it's like if I earn one dollar every time I play in a manner it's three dollars just because I went ten games and he only wins three games and so I make ten dollars and he made nine dollars I'm not sure how that's me making more money while having to essentially win everything that we can possibly have won over these past few years two world cups and just about every game we play so it is sort of for me miss the point but it was it was very disappointing to be honest fellow team captain Alex Morgan remains committed to the cause and confident with the appeal yeah I mean we're we're fighting for all of it but we really do believe in this case and like may and said we were just shocked this decision was out of left field for us I think we're both sides it was very unexpected so we will definitely be appealing and moving forward if anyone knows anything about the heart of this team we are fighters and will continue to fight together

"I mean I feel like I'm Rivera realistic with almost how I approach injuries like you know if I get injured. It's you know it's not really much I can control I can go back and look at You know kind of an autopsy of what happened and get stronger in certain areas and and hopefully prevent it. But I mean if you play the game. Long enough Hopefully you're successful enough. You get enough of those positions you'd be you'd be extremely lucky to win them all And sometimes the other team just honestly plays better. I look back at you know Japan winning the World Cup in two thousand eleven. And then you take a bigger look at it. The whole story the Su- NAMI had hit the year before National Rallying cry. They had an you know them coming back and winning in the in the late. Moments still heartbreaking. I still feel like we should have won that but I don't know it's kind of like what are you. GonNa do like you can't go back. You're not going to rewind history so I I try to take the good with with the losses and just think like wow. I've had an opportunity to play in three straight World Cup finals and I've played. I've never won an NFL championship. But I've played in two finals and we had to amazing seasons and You know just try to learn from all of that but it's like it's it's all kind of part of it. I don't get too stuck on the losses. I feel that I'm very fortunate to be able to played on on all these championship teams. You say you'd think of it as entertaining. You're you know you've talked about this. Your flamboyance is is is kind of a signature. I mean not very. Many people have a signature crowd. Move named after them. The repeal. Your as you do. And you've said that people react differently to women athletes who are flamboyant. Who played in the crowd Than they do to male athletes who do the same I think so I mean I think we look back at Emmy Michael Journalists is a perfect example. I feel like this is probably where I get a lot of it. I grew up Glued to the screen watching The Bulls I had a life sized cutout and all these posters of Jordan and he had this this insane ability to like dagger your heart and then like do one of these you know or like give you a wink or tell you he's GonNa Whoop your ass and then like do it with sort of your smile and I feel men have the the space to have multiple things happening at one time whereas I think women always have that space so you can be a killer you can be. It should talk her and you can have a smirk and you can be an entertainer and you can be great and you can say it. It's like all those things are possible with men was I feel like women. It's a little bit Mike Okay. She's GonNa work really hard and we're going to inspire the next generation. It's all about inspiring the next generation and being a role model and all those things but it's also like I'm also great at what I do and I also want to have fun and I also want to be able to poke jabs and you know entertain the media and sort of have have the whole circus going on. I feel like we need to allow our women more space to just be themselves and make it a little bit more entertaining and I gotTa tell you the people who are watching enjoy watching you have fun. I mean it's fun to watch a great athlete. Have Fun you'll as you point out. You lost the World Cup in two thousand eleven to Japan. You came back and you had a chance to avenge that loss in the Olympics in two thousand and twelve before those Olympics. You made the decision that you were going to come out publicly. Tell me about that. And how that impacted on you. It honestly just started to feel a little weird that I wasn't out out in my normal life friends and family But it it was kind of one of those things like are you. Are you omitting things or a change in your answers? Are you you know user pronouns to avoid the and it just started to feel disingenuous for me so there was that part of it personally And then you know I think like you know the gay rights argument A movement was more starting on legalizing marriage and That had become sort of more popular in broad topic. I think I was sort of dipping my toe more so into politics and getting involved in that and it just felt like this is the right time and I also think people were like. Oh you did it right before the Olympics and like make a splash. I'm like well. Yeah I'M NOT GONNA do in the back page of nothing newspaper where nobody's GonNa see what's the point of that you know so it's kind of like yeah. I do WanNa make an impact even this year people's Al. You're leveraging the moment I'm like Hell Ya eleven the moment what's the whole point of everything unless everybody seeing it though. It was kind of one of those scenes just like the right time and I felt like it was. You know the the the right step for me to come out and say especially leading into the Olympics which must be all about unity and everyone competing at their best. And I just feel like if I'm not competing as my full self then there's something missing. How what kind of reaction did you get from particularly young people gay young women and then I WanNa talk to you about men and men athletes David so so positive at to this day I mean it's been a number of years And still to this day kids. Come up to me You know parents come up to me people by as much older than me You know just saying how impactful it was on their life just to to have more people in different sectors of our society and our culture that are not only out in saying it but then not having it be the only thing that's talked about like yes. I am Gay Professional Athlete. But I think I've gotten to the point now. You don't have to put gay in there but it's very clear that. I am gay and sort of in the room all the time. So then it breaks down stereotypes. It becomes more normalized so I think that's been sort of the gift that has kept on giving this whole time is just realizing how important it is even. Just if one person comes out you you might just reach that one person and for me that just keep happening. It's it's it's really amazing. So mentioned male athletes. You know that as a as a statistical fact that there are a lot of gay men in athletics as there are everywhere else and yet you see very few coming out and I'm wondering if male athletes have actually come to you at all to talk to you about that now that I can think of the that aren't out yet I mean it's it's a very complicated issue. I think a lot of people focus on the fact that no male athletes are out and they say they need to come forward and show that bravery but for me I think that the organizations and the teams and leagues and the sort of structures around. It clearly aren't making it so that those players feel safe. You know it's like Michael. Sam came out in the NFL and he just didn't have a team anymore. Now we can debate the merits further. He was good enough to play. But I think that sends a pretty strong signal to other players. Whether that's not just locker room talk about from an institutional standpoint that some of these teams. I don't think they're really going above and beyond to make it clear to not only the players but to the media and the staff and all of the players in the locker room and everyone in the organization that you will be safe and you'll be protected and we will stand with you when you do this. Not like okay when you come out now. We'll show the resources I think it sort of needs to be signaled prior to that and I think just the the stereotype with with gay men and with you know athletics. It's like if you're an athlete and you're a man your macho if you're gay and you're a man your somehow feminine. I mean I can't believe that we're still feeling that way. Because that's I think we're past that but we should do or should be allowed to these athletes. They feel it they. They can't take the risk you know. They have their financial future in their careers hanging in the balance. And maybe they just feel more comfortable unfortunately staying in the closet. It's very sad but you spend a couple of years playing in France. The Professional League folded after the Olympics in two thousand twelve. You didn't have a team to come back to you. Got To offer from the best team in France. Who spent a couple of years living? There did that. You any kind of a different perspective on America on life on was. How formative were those years that you spent their theory? I loved my time in France. I think interestingly I thought you know I'm thinking France and it's like so open and you know so like free loving actually found that it was much more conservative. Then I thought and maybe that was more in the sports world But they thought I was like the craziest thing that ever happened. I don't know if it's like they sort of. Have this like collective self conscious? I talk about this all the time if they would just let loose a little bit than it. Maybe it's it's in the context of sports but I feel like if you guys can loosen up a little bit then like everything would be a little bit better but yeah there was a sort of and I didn't speak French very well. I wasn't like flew in or anything I mean I would try I. Would you know speak French in store? Whatever get just get answered back in English? I was Kinda like that's fine. I tried you appreciate it. I know you speak English so it was. It was an interesting time. It got a little lonely towards the end Spent Yeah I think a year and a half there so a little lonely towards the end So it was nice to be able to come home but Living in another country I would recommend to everyone if you have the opportunity just to be out of your comfort zone that much that often you can't help grow up a little bit and did you get a sense of how the world sees America when you were over there. Yeah I think so. I mean you know they think we're loud and I think we're or sort of arrogant and I was like well. You're not totally wrong. But I think there's much more permission to be yourself here into different here. I think that we allow ourselves that freedom a little bit more. I mean I think a lot of the serotypes two are wrong. You know just what they see on TV You know much like what we see on TV. So I think that that sort of speaks to being able to live in a different place or go to different places. See other people when there's really no right a wrong for the most part It's just you know different cultures and what people are comfortable with and anything we see. Different is just sort of automatically.

"It was never something that was kind of kept secret I knew it was so hard to not only see your brother who you look up to and still to this day. I love him so much. And you know. I'm so thankful that we had you know the relationship that we had and that we still have But going through that as as such a young kid and senior parents upset and then seeing him in and out of prison and going through all the sort of high school years of being angry with him and pissed at him. Why can't you just you know? Stop or you're hurting us. And then you know understanding more about addiction and you know particularly you know opioid addiction and heroin addiction. How difficult that is and You know how the disease just grabs you and then later in life understanding more so the criminal justice system and now it's like a treatment. Do you have the opportunity for treatment? I mean there was. There was bouts of treatment. Yeah in different in different areas or different stints that he had but it was more so on the context of you know do this and then you won't go to prison but as you know. That's that's not really You know the most effective way to keep people from using drugs is threatening them to go to prison or to send them to prison for long periods of time which I feel like you know. Once he was imprisoned he got caught up in in a lot of other things that that really shaped the rest of his life and a lot of ways. Yeah you've been outspoken. Lately this is obviously this debate has come to the fore we also have this tragedy right. Now of people who earn prisoner don't necessarily have to be imprisoned who are now more exposed to the covert nineteen virus. But you've been outspoken on this prison. Reform issue obviously informed by his experience. Had he been diverted to therapy and treatment rather than prison his life might have taken a different path. I believe it would have. Yeah I really do. I mean someone who's fifteen sixteen years old You know even into his his early twenties To to have his route instead of go through intense. You know therapy. And maybe that means a trade school but therapy along the way and counseling and help To be thrown into a federal prison system to be you know in Susan Vellore Pelican Bay or whatever it may be For really the problem at the root of it is drugs. It just makes no sense to me first of all. We're filling first of all you know. Our our streets are being filled to the Max with pills. I mean we were all. We're seeing it all now. Obviously with the opiate companies The prescription drugs and just how devastating that was and how much knowledge these drug companies had. That was addictive and be exactly what they were doing. They were pumping you know the the famous town and You Know West Virginia that had you know Thirty thousand pills per person or whatever so Thursday at all happening at the same time. And then you know you're putting someone into the federal prison system at such such a young age and when they get out. What kind of job are they supposed to get? You can't get a job if you have a felony. No one wants to hire you. You're you know sort of now. The gap between the life skills is increasing for you. And so now you know it's it's really difficult to easiest thing is to you know Go back into prison. And then that's the people that you know. You're you're really just kind of in this loop. That is really difficult to get out of prison. Packed full of people who really just have have drug have drug issues. They're they're not violent criminals and It's just yeah the I mean it's it's obviously a very complicated issue. We'd go on for hours about it but It's just so sad to see how many people have been caught up in it and I think a lot of people's perception of that you know drug addicts or bad people. You.

"megan rapinoe" Discussed on The Axe Files with David Axelrod

"Hey Megan good to be with you. Good to see you. I am seeing you at a whole different way. Actually because your signature blonde hair is not not blonde is a reflection of the times in which we find ourselves. This is this is Cova D- grow out. I'm scared to death to do anything by myself. for fear that. I might just burn it all off and be left bald. So I'm I'm Rockin. You're also you would have been preparing right now. You'd be in the final throes of preparing for the Olympics. That is not happening First of all how are you spending your time and then what does it mean to have the Olympics postponed for you and the other athlete? How spending my time. I've actually find myself quite busy and doing a lot of zooms and I G lives and PODCASTS. Turns out I like being social and I think I I like kind of staying in the mix actually feel more rested because I'm not traveling and You know flying all over the country doing appearances and playing and all that so Found time to still do quite a bit of public stuff but Just trying to keep in shape as well. There's no way to to train at the level. You need to be ready so just trying to kind of stay at a baseline and Just sort of be be thankful for where I am There's a lot of people who are and you know terrible terrible conditions and just trying to you know obey the stay at home orders and make the best of it while I can and in terms of the Olympics. I mean obviously my My girlfriend sue and I both were in in the same position I mean it's it's it's devastating in this way. You know. This is an opportunity. Sometimes people WANNA get once in their lifetime there. Undoubtedly will be people next year. If the Olympic happens that they wouldn't have been there and they might have been there this year or you know New People might come so it's it's very uncertain for us but at the same time it just I. I just can't help but feel it's completely pales in comparison to the current moment in what were in and how important this moment is so in a way. I'm kind of like well. Yeah of course. We're not gonNA play the Olympics and frankly I think the Olympics are are in doubt next year but You know just thankful or safe and happy and healthy even mixture him. I mean yeah I mean I don't know obviously You know we. We don't know. Hopefully we'll stumble drug therapy or You know have a record record time in vaccine but The more I think about it logistically Just bringing everybody together like that. With the absence of of drug therapies or anything like that just seems difficult but You know very hopeful still but yeah it'll it'll be. I guess we'll see I don't want to be in the prediction business but will say I don't want to be in delicate about raising this but you've had a long in very celebrated career and you're at an age where people begin winding their careers down. You said you're nowhere near that point. But there's that element is there to you. You mentioned your girlfriend suit sort of casually. She's a World Class Future Hall of Fame Basketball Player and so a major athlete also at the sort of at the end of her playing career. What does the time lost mean? That's that's something I think. We're sort of grappling with Right now as this pandemic unfolds and things pop into her head were trying to figure out what it all means You know in the beginning before the Olympics were postponed. It was like we were very early on like of course it's GONNA be cancelled. And what does that mean? Is it going to be postponed? So that was a little difficult. And then I think we've kind of recently started thinking well. Wow it's only you know potentially a year away. Are we going to be ready by then? I mean it's it's just so unknown. That's not a comfortable feeling as a as an athlete you try to control everything that you can and certainly you want to be able to go out the way that you want to and Not Sort of be pushed out by a pandemic but Yeah it's it's a very strange time for an athlete. Our our whole lives in many regards in many aspects are so planned out for so long even working out right now. I'm like I need to work out because I need to stay fit but I'm like why we're not playing the summer most likely but I'm like but what if we do. So it's it's it's really strange to not have That sort of structure around it. But you know I think if it if it if it happens that you know. We can't play sports for the rest of this year or a number of years or whatever it may be You know the situation will be what it is and I think we'll be at peace with that but I think we're definitely both hoping To be able to play and this Olympics and will likely be the last Olympics For for both of US maybe maybe not for me and my might try to hang on but likely you know the You you mentioned that you discovered you really social which is a really weird thing I mean. I think we're all figuring this out. So we're we're all socializing these little boxes on zoom and yet it does draw you. You know people I haven't heard from another longtime say. Let's let's have a zoom cocktail. Let's have a beer on zoom and people are but I'll tell you one thing that that is hard when you're stuck at home if you're a sports freak as I am and many people are is no games and we don't know and we don't know in terms of professional sports including professional women's soccer when that is going to happen and that's a whole different set of issues because you got a bunch of players who and we'll talk more about pay later on but who don't get paid very much. The clubs themselves operate on margins. So that's a big uncertainty as well as when teams are going to play in and what it's GonNa look like very uncertain I mean it's you know for all athletes of course It's difficult but you know if you're talking about an NBA player versus you know w NBA player or an mls player versus a player. Financial situations and realities are are much different for both the structure of the League. Each club and then down onto the player As of right now I think all of the The non national team players in the N. W. Cell are being paid their salary. They had just started. Preseason when this hit so They were protected in that sense The national team is still playing but without any games or opportunity for bonus or playing You know the reality is a little bit different I mean I think you know. Unfortunately we're going to be hit really hard We don't have the the reserves that the NBA hasn't been the NBA's talking about you know the thing. They instituted the force majeure on their players which takes twenty or twenty five percent of their salary. Will you know if you're making fifty million dollars? It's really if you're making one million dollars. It's you're still fine so I'm concerned about that for sure. Not really sure what as we get deeper into the summer. And Are we going to have a season or not? I'm not really sure about the you know. Financial Future of the League's. Hopefully we can ride this out and You know be able to to come back strong next year whenever we're able to but it's definitely a big worry for the female leagues around the country and the world. Frankly Ya know I. There's so there's there's nothing but uncertainty about all of this and that is really uncomfortable but most uncomfortable if your livelihood has been lost hers in jeopardy I WanNa talk about your amazing story. Your Life Journey from Redding California. Tell me about growing up in your small town in Northern California. You know it's funny. I never thought about it ever until I left it and out of college and even quite a bit out of college it seemed you know totally normal to me and I think by by all standards pretty normal group in a great family I'm a twin and were the youngest of six kids so there was plenty happening in the household Both my parents Blue Collar Workers Dad works in construction. My mom's waitress They grew up driving us. All over the the north of Dayton in California just general playing soccer But didn't really realize until after. I became much more liberal and Realize oh I didn't I didn't grow up in a in a blue area or in a blue family per se but you know all the the same sort of values of Treating one another fairly and Taking care of one and sort of shirt off your back kind of value. That's that's how I grew up so I think it's I don't know if people don't know my whole story and they just kind of look at me and think you know. I probably grew up in like a hippie communist or something but turns out I grew up in trump country. Yeah well yeah actually. I think your town voted overwhelmingly for him overwhelmingly. Yes yes definitely. Yeah you mentioned that your folks drove you all over Northern California. You played basketball. You are on the track team. You did not play soccer in high school. You played for a club that was from the bay area. Two hours from where you lived your mom who worked six days a week with spend her days off taking you and your sister to play soccer first of all. Why did you do that? Why why didn't you play for your school? Why did you join this club? And secondly how hard was it for you as someone who wasn't affluent who didn't come from a well to do family Which probably wasn't the norm on the club team that you played on. Yeah I mean we ended up going to Sacramento playing on that team out of Elk Grove. Because there was no You know competitive team at that level in our in our town so earlier on when we were maybe ten and eleven there was you know different teams that that came about. We played competitively which allowed us to go and be seen in Sacramento and beyond but Count wants everyone was getting into high school You know the other players on the team weren't GonNa continue on playing soccer. So that's why we eventually went and played in. Sacramento is really the only option to play at the highest level for us. And then it's interesting. It's almost like we lived in reading and You know coming out of bringing always claim it and we have this like you know soccer star coming out of reading but we never really played there very often and in high school. We wanted to play basketball and soccer and basketball. We're in the same season Which happened to be the winter seasons while I was like I can either play outside in the rain in the cold all the time or maybe I'll just take a break and keep myself balanced and You know we wanted to play basketball. We love it still to this day. we both we both love it so that was kind of the the choice there to to get out and um dual some different. Your brother Bryan. It was five years older than you. And you've credited him with introducing you to soccer you and your sister Rachel soccer but his life took a different turn than yours and and that's obviously been impactful on you. What what happened with him. I mean it's hard to say when I think what what happens with you know. Probably Ninety nine percent of people that get mixed up with drugs or opioids eventually and Heroin eventually I think he was a popular kid in school. We wasn't wasn't withdrawn or Depressed or anything us very social and I think it started off as a social thing for him but quickly probably whereas most kids you know. Try it through school. Whatever he got caught at school With drugs and Paraphernalia so immediately sort of put into the system and then from there he just kept using drugs and kept getting caught. And you know eventually out of juvenile and into county and then into the state prisons and then eventually into federal prisons And and really a a lifelong struggle about for you. He was a role model for you. Yeah no it was. It was very very difficult at that time. I think you know I think he. I got in trouble when I was ten years old. So he was fifteen years old Not really understanding quite What was what totally was going on. But my parents always told us and bury frank terms what was happening so. I'm very thankful for that..

"I mean I always have a lot of opinions GA source my hottest take a heartache taste to something you've said. I don't know I feel like you need help me. I'm trying to think who say I always like because I just watched his a fan like I don't like totally I mean. I know it's going on a battle for a long time like I don't know all the INS and outs I'm like. Is this player. That good like what is up with this player. Or what are they like? Are they going to win the championship? This Samat Michael. I mean the rockets are Never GonNa win like that never. It just can't happen it just like no matter. How Good James Harden is like I mean. At least I've never seen it in. You're never gonNA be invited to Sloan ever all analytics know that there are more. I'm like it's like he has to perform at like you know apex levels for every game of the whole laid playoffs. You basically in order for them to win. It's just it's not gonNA happen. I like it that satisfied. That satisfied Yasser other question to say it. But it's not gonNA work so on a more serious note Some within the last year in Sioux Road of wonderful essay about this for the Players Tribune. Both of your lives changed. I would imagine and they changed. Because Megan became a symbol of lots and lots of things and some of the things that she came to embody symbolize. How can I say this annoyed? The president of the IDC who expressed his annoyance so mega. I already know the answer this from reading some articles. But was there ever a moment where you were thinking to yourself this overwhelming? Like maybe you got five hundred text messages in one day Or maybe a thousand. Because I don't just like from even my buddies in the media when you suddenly become part of a story in a way that you're not expected to it can start off as exciting and it can quickly transition into. I KINDA WANNA hide in my hotel room until this blows over but you. I don't think you ever felt that right like you were just like bring it. Let's go yeah I really didn't and to this day like I know the magnitude of I mean first of all like any president tweeting at you like even when I see stuff in the past of life you know brock bomb holding up a a Jersey or I've been to you know You know the Bush Whitehouse and I've been to the Obama White House like there's a magnitude of the president and then you put like you know trump in that like that's just insane and so two hadn't like go off like that like in such a weird. It was all like Lychee too. I was like wait. You you're are you in your routing Flores 'cause you you love America and you want us to win but now you're rooting against ask us and it was like. I'm like you're having a full on glitch out right here. So it's like I know the magnitude of it but it never I never had that gut feeling like Oh man. This is bad I was kind of like you look bad and I just need to own it and the only really thing that that I did wrong. Like say the F. Word if that's even like wrong thing and just kind of the way. The tournament was playing out to like. We were sort of in a bubble but you always have those media moments and it was kind of like. I don't know I think the team and myself we were just kind of like in this little bubble sort of primed for it anyways and it just sort of added to the magnitude in I don't know I just. I love those big moments too so I felt like the World Cup was exploding and it was like so popular at this game. That whereabouts against France was like the game that everyone had circled in. I feel like I had much support in like within the team within the group like we had our president was there and like You know other like high members from. Us Soccer Obviously coaching staff. The team everyone was like we got your back so I feel like if everyone else was a little bit more stressed out in like exposing that to me or you know kind of saying that maybe I would have had that feeling but everyone just kinda like. That's why old and I was like I know. Can you believe it and I was like already scheduled to go to the press conferences? Discount said it right away and then I just I don't know I just like there was just nothing that was gonna get in the way of of US winning and doing doing our job feel so I feel like as long as we just focused on that then I was like you played yourself. Why is it speaking of which I read a clip when you were talking about this and you said actually the only thing that was really worried about was. Is this going to affect the team? And I assume you meant like our people get just going to be stressed out from answering questions about it are people gonna like. Is it just going to become such a thing but nothing right yeah? It really didn't and I think my team had the same response. They were kind of like. Oh my God. This is so wild. Like you've got trump trying to take you down onto it or like two days before we played the big game of the World Cup. Like this isn't so there's almost like of course. The presidency has a magnitude could also trump doesn't take his job seriously. A lot of ways in doesn't act presidential and You know sort of just goes off the handle all all the time about these things. So that sort of lessened the importance or seriousness of it in this way because he had done this with so many people across so many different things in different athletes as well so it was kind of like. Of course he's GonNa say we'll we're not invited. Anyways it's like we already weren coming so I can resend that invitations. I quit. You can't fire me. Did you have to switch phones? I didn't I just get that day. I just can't even imagine your phone. Just must have been like a lot. I actually don't do a lot of comment reading as is I've always. This is just like people. Explained is not such a great team around. Amin Shah at my agency to Were like furious on the back. End like doing all kinds of work in cybersecurity. I got a lot of like reset your account for snapchat recently out for you know a lot of kind of like cyber hacking going on but I was able to keep my interesting Su- as that was happening. Did you know you embrace it to you? Wrote this awesome piece for the Players Tribune. That what like crazy popular they win. So it's a it's a great story area like whether you agree with the politics. Don't U S. A one the big thing we can all get behind that But did you have a sense of this is happening of like life is not going to be the same after this like going to restaurants when we used to be able to do that is not going to be the same just like regular life is not going to change because Meghan went from famous athlete super famous in the soccer world to like one of the most famous people on Planet Earth for a period of time. Yeah no I didn't know if that makes me like I don't I don't know realize no I had no idea I don't even remember. I don't necessarily remember a moment either. I had some friends who kind of joked with me and they'd be like I forget exactly what they would say they'd be like. Oh like your Megan's girlfriend now you're immune to be like like Meghan up and I was like. Yeah whatever I don't know and then very quickly. After they won it was like. Oh boy very quickly as soon as we got home. Yeah yeah it was like. Oh it's different. Yeah or even like I think the best. The best example is at the. Sp's so something tell you maybe the people at the viewers watching at the SBA during commercial breaks people can kind of get up and move around and there's a lot of fans in the audience like whether actually to be honest. There's some athlete fans like people who are athletes who are fans of each other and then there's just like little kids or families or whoever and it's like Patrick. Mahomes is sitting next to me and he's getting his fair share. Megan getting like swarmed. So here we are at the. Spf every big-name. Chivalry take every commercial break. Megan is getting absolutely swarmed and I was like. Oh like right. So who's the person who's the person you met subsequent to all of this where you were like again. This is someone who embraced the storm and was fine with it but there had been a celebrity that you met where you were like. Oh my God. I'm meeting whoever like for me. It was like what like what I see what I saw. Denzel Washington. A foot away from the Lakers. Like holy that's who who was nobody. Yeah I mean. I generally don't like totally geek out on celebrities. I mean there's a espy's like Tate Donovan. Beeline for those Donovan. She was like who like nursing. Never seen never skied left ocean. Number nine going Anderson Cooper Cooper so doubt over you though. Biki outnumber you though. I'll have to think on that. I mean I just like the outpouring of support like I mean. It's great that obviously we won like our sport you know is like growing and becoming more exciting and becoming more popular but it just seemed like people are so excited for such a different reason. That was the coolest part about it. I think so one so like this person. Also like Grooved out on Megan Hard Laura dern so you were on Seth Meyers and she was like like went over to the. Us Really Cool Meghan. Once for like. I mean even now to be honest but during that stretch you're making celebrities fans like big celebrities. Boomerang it was. I think I they got actually a photo like I were. It was Halloween and treating people were like multiple children in my neighborhood. By the way I thought it was very cool. Both boys and girls were dressed Ohio and as you loud voice over the summer at that was cool. That was really cool Something I didn't know until I was reading up does does whereas repeat no Dinnertime family conversation at right now because I didn't know your dad is is maybe a conservative. Republican. And you guys bad arguments Are we are we are we? Are We talk every day? Everything's fine yet I just. I can't say that can't be true. There's now it's funny. I think people assume that I'm like yeah born from coast to next. I'm like you know I mean. I'm raging liberal but most of my family pretty much all of my family We're from small town role in California and most of them are quite conservative. I mean I think we're just honest with each other in like I obviously don't agree with it with a lot of holidays and I'm always trying to like get in there and talk about it and Just sort of like yeah I guess just you know. Say My view. And they say there'd be I mean. It was a little awkward for sure after the election in two thousand sixteen number. Almost like. Just give him a chance. Okay okay so let's do that so here we are but yeah it'll it'll be interesting coming up to coming up to this election. We'll see I'll definitely beginning The family conversation defect And I mean this in the most serious way possible. Did it affect the way that You and your family.

"Did do get this a lot I think if like we had to rewind and we're you know we're both in high school and we're having to push on your your better soccer for sure than I was the best I mean. I'm like five six Not Overly so. There's not a lot and not against. He's actually really good basketball player. So like the the short answer is when we're both nineteen eighteen. Nineteen on the better soccer player than she is the Basle player but now she's definitely the better. I can't even. I can literally do one thing. It's basketball my body like freaks out if I do anything else rebounder. She is a good rebounder. He Your door saying of course until her arm circles arms Passes are like are you running or you bang. Are you catching it? And like you know banging the ball between your hands like like flares naked rebound so it really makes a big noise into. Yeah sometimes unlike if if I'm really feeling it and if I've got some good grace going all just do immediate put back. Yes which is really annoying really annoying to build up some good Nice Joe Ryan to do a workout and she gets like reverse layup. I'm like I'm just trying to get through this workout. Yeah it's your job eurostepped later. Ooh Yeah working on my way back working on I try to. I try to do what I'm supposed to do is then. That's you know what them. Therefore you know what she would be really good at though you can literally take over that guy be dot and that other guy that he always. The immigrant goes yes. She's like you'll be nominal go-to so he. He actually just did like a collection of my storm teammates summer and it was spot on like scary. Maybe we'll do a little video. That will be that would go by without definitely going viral. We'll do it together. Okay okay. Who who who would you analogize yourself to in the NBA? Megan earned the WNBA. Who who are you who's your NBA or Wnba Cop? If you played basketball would you be a chucker? Would you be a pass first player? Which play any defense would you? What would you be? I'd have a lot of fouls that was about to say aloud after tight in that part of the game up Gosh I don't know I do love passing. I like passing Yelling good lengthier the fun loose. I'd probably have not a great turnover to pay issue. You have the clutch gene. Yeah let's we can't argue with that anymore now. You got the clutch gene. I don't even know how many think of a pass first point guard fouls a yeah like click crimes. Isn't that good at defense? Like a not. Not I mean not even close to Steph like kind of like a step loose are you like are you like. We'll do the fun. Things also like have some wild ass turnover like Luca Luca. What's he's doing all the sports not just start naming like first team all NBA. Love me like right off the bat. We're GONNA have a loss lesser version. And now we're back to back up. Point guards backups. Your Lucas backup. Is that Jose Abreu Perfect Jay. No he's either. One is financing. How much trash talkers and Soccer Meghan? Not that much like the field I think is so big and everyone's running around so much Sometimes there's like a little bit. I don't really talk trash but definitely like in the league. I like to just kind of talk. I'm actually talking all the time like especially in training. 'cause I'm just like what are we. What else we doing out there? You know. We're come sit in between drills so everyone knows that if you're going to be around me on my side I'm just constantly just like Jackie. I guess it's kind of track but it's not. I'm not like doing it. I do a lot of this. Like hand. Waif like that a lot of commentaries just a running commentary for negotiated for what sue was. The was the World Cup hard to watch because I find soccer like absolutely agonizing to watch. I said man my wife. She's Croatian so he got to the Croatian World Cup. I just ask. I couldn't watch the Games. I couldn't watch penalty kicks your actually emotionally invested in it. Was it hard for you to watch? I think the hard part and I might be putting words in your mouth. It's like it's a sport where so like unfamiliar with so we have no sense of what the control is right. It's like basketball and I watch a basketball game. I see someone at the free throw line. I can like relate to that and be like. Oh yeah this person should make this but in soccer. There's like all these unknowns on what's makeable what's not what's this. What's that so she says Emotional Roller Coaster So the hardest parts I've said was watching her. Take penalty kicks again. Not because I was ever nervous. She was going to miss other small part of you where you're like. Oh my God if he misses is going to be bad to deal with it but it's more so like so I would. I would find myself being like all right. This is if I was on the free throw line. There's five seconds left at the game. And it's like okay. She's got because that's like something I can relate to. It was the unrelatable where I would find. That's where I get like anxious. Yeah you're more of like an internal internalizing while you're watching your emotions. I think I'm like a super crazy. I'm just like the normal fan section when games were like. Get it out so I can really do. I couldn't watch penalty. Kicks were unwatchable for me when I watch curl. They're kind of hard especially like when you go to the shootout like just one off is less but like in the cruelty of ever gonNA walk up and walk back and it's ten times time in this offense like so do you know making. Do you know any without naming names because this would be me even if I were a professional soccer player. Do you know any players who are like you know what? Just please never pick me to be. One of the penalty kick taker. I'm opting out of it. I don't WanNa do like actually kind of semi serious. Are there players that I mean kind of? Yeah we definitely have like well we practice them all temps that we do have a like a running sheet of like your percentage and how good you are like you know. We have like. Who's best on down? That would be. Who would take them? But then we definitely like end like even before. We're like listen if you're terrified. Say it because some people are like you know even sometimes it's like a player you wouldn't think maybe it's like a defender or something or like someone who you wouldn't think would be really good at penalty kicks. They're just really good. And sometimes someone who you think would be art. Like if you're terrified Just say it so we can put your the bottom of the list. Five players back. Yeah and some players only on like I'm not that comfortable taking like I I'll take one if I have to of course if I'm number ten or eleven on the list but like yeah some players in I encourage them like just be honest. Just 'cause like we need to have like everyone who's like once I want people who are like willing to like bang someone out of the way to take when I want those people up there. It's like it's a stressful thing. Where that's very comforting for me. That there are high level athletes who are terrified of it. Because I I wanted to watch sue. What is the most nervous? You have been in a basketball game whether it was a free throw. I imagine it has to be some static. Moment where the yeah. It's the free throws but what game. What moment yeah so In Russia so this is like this. Actually yeah in Russia they have is actually like a European thing not. Everybody subscribes to it. But a Lotta Times. It'll be a tie game. So let's say so. This is exactly what happened. My Team Spartak. We were we. Were Up to other team. Had the BAUGH. Let's call it twenty seconds. I know yet they come. They run a play they score. They tie the game so now. Let's say there's ten seconds we come out so the tie game in America. You just play that out and you count on your defense. A LOT OF TEAMS IN EUROPE. A lot of coaches. They have a different philosophy whether we want to have the ball last so they value so even though yeah so even though the scores tied. You're now on the foul if you miss so there's like I said seven to ten seconds. If you miss they now have the last shot. That's those two free throws out 'cause I first of all it's not what we had run a play. We call timeout Bali. Yeah I was like. Oh it was right on the inbound vow I was like Oh my God it caught me by surprise and then as I approached the free throw line I was like Oh like why off game or a random regular a regular season game but it was. There was like seating implications like we had to win the number one seat if we lost probably straight up oligarchs in front of an older like. It's why don't WanNa do that. Yeah you don't WanNa do that. They're holding up the scar. You don't WanNa do that A did you make them both in both. Why don't they are you? I bet you're like an eighty nine percent career free throw shooter. Why are they failing? You doesn't check out. I want to have the ball last. Well don't can't. They fell someone who shoot sixty percent ten seconds. But you were that nervous. What did you yourself down nothing. It's like we're talking about like taken abilities to sculpt there and shoot it I feel like I do the pre thing. Where might you know sort of even before the game or before tournaments even start life for the World Cup? Whatever I've already gone into my head and been like okay. There's a scenario where it goes into penalty kicks. We're in the final the World Cup. I Miss I lose the World Cup for the country. You've lived that scenario in your head like yeah so then I get there. I'm like well I mean. What could you know it's like so? That's what I told my team. There was a few like younger teammates who were like Honda stressing about the penalties. Not Make listen literally the worst thing that you could do is like lose the World Cup your country like yeah like just say it like. Don't be afraid to say 'cause like could happen you know. Just verbalize wow lost. The most for an entire nation of people worst. Well here we are instead of getting to that moment in your they could lose this whole thing for the nation and then like not as scary. Yeah you try and make it. Try to take the power one nine to get it. I've ever done that make it? What is your hottest basketball take? It could be anything could be a player. That's headed could be away. You would change the season. It could be any. What's your hottest take when you guys are watching games? Oh Man.

E. "The day the mistake Megan Rapinoe is making the US women's soccer team is being honored today in New York City with a parade as you may know all the Americans won the World Cup for the second consecutive year this should be an occasion where all Americans come together in admiration for the skills of the team but Megan Rapinoe all the captain has almost single handedly destroyed that by injecting her politics into the World Cup Mr Dino apparently has a problem with president trump and perhaps your country in general so she refuses to sing the national anthem or placed her hand over her heart then even before her team had won the Cup she told the world quote I'm not going to the F. thing White House on quote that was crude and inappropriate not for the descent if the woman doesn't want the honor of a White House visit she's entitled to pass that is her right but her wrong is injecting politics into a forum designed to showcase athletic achievement her political activism is totally out of context this review knows also allocating millions of Americans and putting a damper on the joy of victory she is doing this selfishly marketing herself in liberal anti trump circles as a political hero perhaps your teammates would like some time off from her politics maybe they like a day of celebration the entire country could enjoy they can't say that because the committed left press would attack them but the feeling is most likely there but Megan Rapinoe will not give her teammates a break because she wants to go on CNN to bash trump and insult the sixty three million people who voted for him she not have waited a few days before auditioning to become a left wing commentator just a few days Megan then you could have dashed away but Rubio understand she can become famous fast by using the World Cup to promote herself and her political point of view that's ego centric to say the least Colin Kaepernick did the same thing he is the National Football League to promote his anti American anti cop agenda cabinet could have waited until the offseason to make his points but now he wanted the TV cameras on the field did right at him Megan Rapinoe is most likely very happy today the press is line Ising her commercial endorsements await and she is the center of attention on a day when the entire women's team should be the center of attention but America today is not the country it used to be eight selfishness and narcissism is now celebrated in many places not scorned to some Americans Mister Pino is virtuous and courageous despite the fact that she has polarized the country and brought unnecessary controversy to a tremendous victory for her team the situation is not about equal pay there's no question the women's soccer team should be paid even more than the men's team because economics dictate that no this is about using.
