"Which is. Can i get away with playing bishop. Like if i if i played this badly still gonna win games. And he was like he. It was like breakpoints down and whatever it will save them off and you know he's a troll but he's having that conversation. That's what i mean when i say he's vance in human form it's not like he's just like trolling just like with people because there are people who do that. But he's like having an active dialogue with people in his head and this goes down right to the epic legendary celebration. The dead fish fifa L. two plus left That he did not match point because as he explained in his answer tarim in the press conference that was in conversation with the guys that he had been talking to in the locker room like the locker room attendance. Which i kind of love like this guy who was in their bantering with a bunch of people who are complete strangers to him on day one of this events and talking places for oh the dead fish that the and him thinking. I'm going to do it and it was for them. It wasn't for everyone. It was for them and i i really like that. There's something nevertheless a complicated guy because he's not not problematic. You know historically And he can his mouth relative. Atp but he's also you know he can get himself into trouble. You can do stupid shit court that i'm sick. Frigging hate it when you do that. Like you know things like that. Be very condescending. All these things but other but not like umpires to shirt empire. Not i'm saying like you know But there is at the same time this very personable side of him. Not on my curious. I think in a little bit of ways where he he. He seems to despite being this. Like fluent in french russian dude. Who's like know multimillionaire. like i just. I just really loved the idea that he liked connected with the locker. Attendance of the us open. Who you know were like new yorker a you know i just. I just really liked that. That was a very during. He seems incredibly comfortable in his own skin. Yes right always had. Its players seem to be driven by insecurity on different. I think trump's not not part of that and never have just comfortable. He seems so at ease e seem so willing to go there. Whatever it may be an self and everything and just Again why for me for myself. Find it really enjoyable to watch. Medvedeva's is precisely what you're saying in terms of like you know. I'm not weighed down by his insecurities. I'm not weighed. Because he doesn't he just goes out there and plays and get a lot of ways. He's like the ultimate like right now amongst that. At top ten like the ultimate professional. Like the sense. That i get from medvedev is kind of like i'm obsessional tennis player. He's ambitious and whatever ultimately. He's there to play tennis as a job. He's very good at it. But i don't get the sense that like you know. Losing is a fraud thing. From medvedev's it's a thing of the happen. He's not somebody seems to port. Put his help in southworth into into and he just kind of goes about his business. You wins great. he loses. That's fine like whatever his magnanimous in defeat. You know his his speech his losing speech in australia. Kind of like talking about how great novak was and how novak took him under his weighing in like practiced within and all these sorts of things was like really cool he was. He expressed his opinion about the goat debate. A i think it's funny. He won't say it but he said it says on court and he was like he made a big deal of it like like. I never said this before. But to be novak's the greatest of all time but then when he was asked to confirm it in the press. Like i said what you basically was like right now i almost like. I don't want it in transcripts. Like i don't wanna hear it but like this is what i feel like you know So i yeah. I mean it's it felt due to me. He's absolutely one hundred percent like the world number two doubles down. He's incredible harker player so they could just made sense that that australian open final. Us open title. He's gonna be you know doing out with novak for these for these these titles living for for for a little while. I don't think she has nearly his on-court when seat but there's a lot of similarities for the bluntness and the self assuredness with a methodist. I like that. Yes just but that's who. I mean right like we'll be like kaya just sticking prowl late. She doesn't take it home and everything just like watch tragic herself too seriously doesn't and was willing to willing to make jokes about things is like it's their attitude towards telling you can just watch their matches and enjoy the tennis. Not lake worry about on all. Like i can't really stressed out when steph is losing or when he's winning like either way. I'm just stressed out for him. I'm stressed out for novak. I'm stressed out for keen when he was like you know doing when he was playing. I guess You know area at least like whatever like i. I'm stressed for these people. Because i know how much they want it And so it's really nice to just have that breath of fresh air which is the medved that which is the plus placenta of just like okay. I can just enjoy it with your talk about If you have thoughts about felix who made person finals Feel o'shea elliott team Had a nice win over francis cafo in the fourth round Winning a four center. That was sort of fun. Nights international crowd. Nash got into not lost in people. Also that's pretty cool to see two black men playing a big stage match on arthur ash stadium to monetary about. That is why there's a lot of sort of like cool was anyway but back to felix. Hi i was saying this group chats. There's something about felix that i'm not alone here. And the greater i slam semifinal ripping on him. That's just unfair to him but like he so unconvincing.

"Smaller data sets mona. Had that whole string of just like crap draws but also just kind of lake got serve all off the court by taylor. Townsend drew sharipova in her first us. Open or i land since coming back. You know A got connecticut on armstrong. I mean it was just brutal draws so but has made a semifinal here but ultimately yeah. I mean between the three of them. They've made to australian open finals. That's as close as they've each cotton and argued leak are being a and simona probably should one those matches. I mean. they're are closed. Yeah yup. I believe so but yeah weird but yeah all that is just to say to the extent that anybody will deign to take. You know. Women's tennis as a a helpful indicator of what what could potentially happen on the men's side as well. I think that it's a pretty fair Just having i'm all for conflict between the two let let's get to at last hour champion of wins it collapses to the ground left l. to he is my name a troll king of the highest order. And i said it. I did serve half-jokingly or more than half the real mummy. He on the open twenty nineteen when he was egging on the crowd. But there's something about that. He seemed so in control of himself or dislike it has it has its way of lake reading things reading the game and reading the sport and he's just smart in this weather. It's different and refreshing intr- very interesting to talk to you very insightful. Very like rye and funny and clever and listening to you don't always get that often in tennis. Honestly and he is. Yeah he's a he's a delight and this is a you know this. This is number two in the very clear number two on paper. It's very clear the heir-apparent being number one. I mean it feels like it felt like a big upset and somebody's at the time but method of his building towards this. He's one pretty much. The big tournament touchy as interesting looking his titles. He's incredibly good. Second half of the season player weirdly. Yeah very not good in the first happenings won't cannons went to cincinnati. He's money shanghai diesel. He's one he's when baresi he's one year end championships. Were they call it now. Atp finals it's it's it's a great title for him and is tennis. Looks is is not like. It's interesting. I i don't love people. I know people who stay way back to return serving. Keep i do hate it. Becomes four really quickly. And he's yeah. He's he's clear. I just love watching the ball. Anybody else just loves those weird funky mechanics hitting tennis balls. You just enjoy watching plan that very pure basic level and i think it's a hugely deserved title in nappy form. I think he's a. I don't know he's i don't know if there's like an ostrich inevitable era of any kind. I don't know what the future holds Barely but this was something that was definitely achieved very meaningfully. Well in both the sort of longer term like i said building resume shorter term and he was dominant headed. Relatively easy draw should be said. They only lost one set about the whole way so legend suddenly exactly so anyway so he. He rolled and he's deserving champion end. I think will be someone who the sport can be pretty happy with. Yeah i an unabashed. met medvedev supporter. I i like washing plant. And he is he's bands in a human being You know like like the way that he plays the way that he is like all the decision-making he is a reactor of the highest order. He see you know you can throw whatever you want kitchen sink. He will come up with something special he won't even whereas i feel like with novak novik is also very much obviously the same thing but As if feel like novak's a little bit more kind of I always use this phrase but the players player like he makes the percentage play not neighbouring way. But he does the right thing all the time. Medvedev is always kind of like a. I see what the right thing is what i could pull this off the for whimsey to. There's a whims. Yeah there's a windsor some wits in the way that medved is as a person in interviews. I love watching. His press conferences. love watching his interviews. I think he's incredibly smart articulate of very funny very self deprecating but also his game. I think that his game is very witty in the same way where you serve me out wide. I'm going to try and go around the around the post and just remind you never hit back again like you know like around the posts on a return again. You should let anywhere but flag like with tons of margin like the ball ended up like two feet inside the baseline going around the post. It was so at tweeted out ahead. Return on the night before i felt like hundreds of replies being like oh this happening all the time it would not understand the word return in tweet. I was like oh my gosh. It's a return. Here's the thing thing. I just wanna circle back. You know. Because i like thirty rock and arrests development. Two of my favorite shows Comedic shows you kind of circle back to to to jokes running jokes. Words need something There are technical definitions and in tennis. There's a technical definition of a return is a return pretty specific. It's very specific what that means. It is not a shot from the baseline like that's different than a return inward if you're just using it as a shot. Yes that's using a shot. People just did not comprehend it and it was deeply toy anyway But Yeah so i think that's very medvedeva. That's what i enjoy watching about him because even though ultimately maybe he's kind of just doing what everybody else is doing top player you know but there is yeah. Whimsey is the right word in terms of of what he's he's doing out there and how his mind thinks and there's a little bit of playfulness of very playful. You kind of like. I just wanna to do this. And i was joking with howard bryant because there was that section in the third set where or maybe even second-set where medvedev was displaying terribly based drop-shotting novak but heating really shitty dropped shots and just like whatever and slow. The momentum started to shift a little bit that's got a little bit closer third-set but I was telling. I was telling howard it was like if this is. If there's any such thing as a reverse heat check this is what it is which is medvedev going. Typically for those who don't know heat track is a term in basketball typically Which is when you're you're just making baskets all the time that you decide to do something so crazy just to see. Am i that hot. Like how am i. You know like steph curry. Does it all the time like you know what. I'm just gonna shoot from midcourt for having today the oh it went in okay. I got it today or at least for the next ten minutes so a reverse he check to me is what.

"Match in match out rock solid on both ends service returning like just kind of breaks the numbers for what he can do. I is that the comp. Nah i don't like it because medvedev's who is funny. Did you see the two sexy video with drake. The hammer come out. And there's a little dancing. We'll look at a no comment on that but medved here's the Another knock on medvedev. I just said his only docket sir versatility. Another thing is like mentally could be a total head case. Now i mean let's be honest true. I mean the clay court season was not a matter of medved of his flat so he can't win a match. No the clay thing was. He was mentally not ready to win a match. This was not about medved of his flat. So he can't get out of the first round of monte carlo like come on. He can't beat dan evans play. Wait that's we lost right. Yeah yeah he can't beat dan evans on play really no of course he can't he just was basically being ahead. Case by my push back to that would be but then. We saw the french open. Run where he won exactly how he was supposed to when he decided. You know what. I am gonna lock in physically and i'm just by tennis on these clay courts and it's worth reminding everyone danila medvedev has only been new frequent medvedev price since the start of twenty. I mean you would really say okay. Midway through that twenty nine hundred hardcore stretch at the end of the year. I thought he flashed that level at the start on was starting to look very very good throughout the course of the season. But he's only been neil medvedev really for about six months you know. This is his first full season of being daniel freaking metadata because twenty twenty got cut off and there would have been a whole season of clay court repetitions for him to of go through the lumps that he went through this year. And that's just. I always want to mention the data point. Because and the amount of there's two techs gotten most you know it's about medvedeva rod kanu and it's about generational shifts. I'm having people who don't watch a things just seem to be different now. All these young players are winning. And it's like man you really haven't listened to the pod since two thousand seventeen have it just. It does felix for all of them. The you know male or female. The address cue's osaka's medvedev sixty passes of the world like what is the sample size of grass court matches. What is the sample size as a little bit larger but like surface versatility. If that is one thing you're concerned about. I actually think that's a great thing because there been limited wraps for medvedev like yes. He turns twenty six next year but he really hasn't been demille medvedev. Clay court matches for more than six months. Yes yeah it's not quantifiable theory to throw a few of a match. You know the but it's a true theory. I think with especially with the grass. It's that people need to not look at past results like it was driving. Both of us crazy. I think when people were like sixty pastas number from past the first round of wimbledon duties played at twice like like so. I think that was out of hand. at the same time they a guy like medvedev did play wimbledon juniors and actually had a lot of success there so There are some reps. I do think that there are some stylistic. Things felix felix His games great on the grass. So so it's not. It also might be something where we're like not looking at anyone except ruble of positive era and medvedev and that is also kind of to our detriment because there are actually other players bertini and felix..

I would say significant turning point in the nation as a whole and what i would say is you have an. I'm among them every single week. I want to thank everybody in. Fayetteville met a ton of our listeners. Who were there for the texas arkansas game incredible experience. I'm going to be by the way in. Gainesville florida this weekend for the alabama game against florida in a couple of weeks. Buck is gonna be with me for his first ever college football game or going down to tuscaloosa. Pretty ole miss alabama game. Which looks like it's going to be incredible. But then also in addition to be an texas arkansas. I flew back my ten year. Old is about to turn eleven on wednesday and what he wanted to do was go to an nfl game. The local team the tennessee titans here with his ten year old. Eleven year old buddy. So i took a big group of kids to That football game. And i've been to a bunch of college football games. I've now been to an nfl stadium. The crowd began as the flyover was occurring and as they honored september eleventh victims. This was obviously on september twelfth. The crowds spontaneously began to chant. usa usa. I tweeted out that video. You can go. Check it out what. I am seeing all over this country with college football fans and with nfl fans is. They're showing up selling out there. Stadiums not wearing masks living on one hundred percent their normal life tailgating with friends hugging high fiving celebrating. Sometimes your teams play poorly reacting in the same way that you would before. And i can't get over the incredible dichotomy between the way the blue check of losers in the joe biden administration and their anti science advisers. Behave demanding that we have a vaccine mandate and the way what i would say. Real americans across the landscape are actually behaving in buck. I'm curious because you went to the us open for the tennis final and they made a big deal about how they're going to require vaccine passports to enter and everything else virtually nowhere in football. Are they requiring them. But what was your experience going through to get into that. Arena to watch that event. So i i love going to the us open. It's one of the only sporting events that i make a real. I've made a real effort in the past to go to. I'm i've been going. I was a kid I mean i used to go to. Nba games to the occasional giants and jets game. But that's that feels like a eons ago now but i'm going to the final between medvedeva russian and novak djokovic a serb who is arguably if he wins one more of the of a major us open wimbledon. French open australian. Open the greatest tennis player of all time at least by by major wins which is usually how people judge it. And i show up there and just Spoiler alert in case. You didn't see it which. I'm sure anybody who cares about tennis. Did jovovich got got spanked. I mean it was bad. He had a tough time. Three-set loss on on center court. But as we're going in clay there yelling. You must have your vaccine passport. There's a bull and your ide- in your hand you must there yelling. This is our been there. There's this big walkway with thousands and thousands of people just funneled toward yup the main grounds and then our thrash stadium. They that after. They're yelling you at this. You know at the top people. Yelling this is you're getting closer and then they had someone go just just waving people. Yeah yep yep yep. I am not kidding. I could have held up a a soiled napkin. Hands a piece of junk mail. Saying you know i've just won a million dollars or something and wave that and by the way i'm not i'm not making your own life security guard the security guards on this. I'm with them in that. They're not gonna do this absurd. It's going to slow down. So i appreciate. I wanna high five the people who weren't even really checking but it isn't extended finger in the center of the hand so to speak to all the people that are going. Oh we need the vaccine per sports every were eight. Only if you're going to do things like this. It is truly cosmetic theater. It obviously means nothing and clay. We were outside the main matches outside. This stuff doesn't doesn't spread outside not any meaningful way. We can't be held responsible for people that are afraid of lightening strikes all the time. I'm sorry we can't live our lives that way. Well and i think it becomes increasingly difficult to argue in favor of any kind of restriction when americans are turning on their television sets and even if you are among the the kovic fear porn purveyors or one of the people who still terrified that. You're going to die of covert when you're watching a full stadium. And they finally have done away with the absurdity of coaches on the sidelines. Having to wear masks or anybody having to wear those ridiculous shields. There is now no indication whatsoever. That cova ever existed as it pertains to college football in the nfl when you actually are in the stadium. You're watching the games and buck the great masses of football fans out there. This is spreading viral. Now the amount of chance of f. Joe biden that are occurring all over the country including in the nine eleven. Celebrate tori mets yankees baseball series. "Jackovitch or visit did not win the match. The fact that the he had the crowd with him the end that the him you know he was saying like this is one of the happiest times. He's been on on a tennis court. You could see how powerful an emotional that that made him which although he didn't come away with you know the history the perhaps the the crowd were expecting he still left with you. Know he still laugh with an experience. I think it will will happen. We'll we'll we'll have an impact in and have a lasting lasting memory on him. Yeah i thought it was kinda surprising that he said he was so happy at the end. But i think he was happy because he would say relieved. It was finally over this kind of stress and pressure which i guess he'd had during the olympics as well and then say hey you know everyone asking questions about it the media you know it kind of gets a bit marched as an. Id one to say if he hadn't played the olympics whether he'd be fresher foot for this tournament however you know he couldn't have not gone and try to win the olympics and tries. Do the golden slam say assignation. Shame in in trying because what he was doing was obviously an astronomical fee and he came so so case in the grand scheme of things are no i mean he fell right at the right at the last hurdle. And i think you said. It's he was. The pressure was off. You know it was. The pressure was going to be off regardless of of of the outcome was going to remind ourselves that calendar slab does not cover log too often and the fact that is that is that is pressure on ye for the whole season if you want to kind of do it and it was. Yeah i i guess it's sort of been building and you don't really know i think it sort of just all came together. I think in that in that final match he probably wasn't even thinking about it too much in the earlier rounds but when you get to the you know the final match with the you know the big tennis players coming out to what she sharpei was there for. Labor was there have over the celebrities as well as the crowd. You know it was a very big occasion and you know i. I don't. I don't think the crowd were left disappointed. You know not having seen history made given they saw someone in medvedev win their slam Ever which him would have been one of the sweetest feelings. No doubt particularly given how meekly and how one sided it was in australia. He's effectively done. Occupancy he's done the complete opposite has been a little bit of a reverse so in In your yeah. I mean that celebration at the end joe and then finally one of gamers were extremely delighted at the The food to the floor which apparently on a gaming consoles sort of controller lt plus left is what the We need to do a celebration. Yeah i play video games. So it's city means nothing to me. He's the guy who's not known for celebrating. Say to see him. do that was. It was a bit surprised but yeah he obviously was he'd overseas cut a plan to in advance. And i you know why not. I mean he he. He's been wasting for this moment all his life and the fact is rise. He wanted to do in his own bed. Vasudev way at through fief celebration. I think that was quite. It was quite cool and very very memorable And i don't think it was. It wasn't a sign of disrespect. I just think that was memphis. Big bev doing away. Of or how could i make babble you know. I think he's a big fief fat as well so it was quite quite funny to see something that you see on it. Football than sega. Titus is quite cool kind of cross over there. Yeah i mean. I see how it could be disrespectful. It's a celebration. Say i mean. Have you even wanna ground islam tied to a nasty fall to the flow in some sort of fashion. We didn't see any although celebrations like people jumping up. I mean we need to speak about. Yes we we've talked about the kind of the result and things could have been different because we were talking about. You know the the second set in specifically and that the story of that second set why you felt the jovovich was gonna do his customary lose the first set winning four because he was really knocking at the door on the on the medvedev. Serve at the start that a second set the right point chances and he had a second serve the point was in play and then he he had to have a let which fell against him. Because of an audio speakers going off. I think in the arena during the point and they had to give medvedeva. I serve and over. He didn't win that point. He eventually won it and you could see. Jovic is frustration. I mean he obliterated his racket he was very very close to hitting a boo-boy kind of scarily in the direction of a bogo. Who's running towards it. Fortunately that didn't happen. We'll see how that could have ended has ended in the past. But you could tell that thout that felt like a big big. turning point. in the fact that djokovic wasn't able to to break that really. I think was the a big moment. We'll look back on. In terms of one of the reasons why i think it was a straight sets victory for from even a not. Maybe why we're talking about jovovich winning potentially enforce. Yeah exactly. I mean i. I think that rockets smash was summed up the day joke rituals having and he needed to do it. He needed to let it out. Yeah and that was unfortunate with the latino because it gave medvedev offensive again. And perhaps you could have been improved to a moment is set that you know i think also the the star of that That you know about having the breakpoint she thought. Oh here we go. I right normal service. You know regimed. Yeah as it went on. Medvedev was still winning. I was like okay. Maybe maybe it will slow. Bizarre to see djokovic who was forty up in his first service game you okay. We're just off to a normal star hair but but now medvedev just broke straight away not really set. The tone didn't it and and to be e all he needed was one break of serve. Given the level of dominance he was having on his on his i have an in early on his second. Serve as well. Compared to novak djokovic because in the match novak djokovic served your second serve points one was only forty percent whereas daniel method was upper sixty percent. So you know. He was just regardless of of norway. Serve it was his first or second. Medvedeva was really getting the rewards and it was. It was fascinating to see at times. He was reverting to the nick of second serves of just booming down to earth serves and yes that did leader few double votes and we saw that play out in the attention of of the championship..

"I actually wanted to see him You know do something really historic. That hasn't been done for such a long and And then as the match continued. I mean i was kind of pulling for medvedeva was playing so well but if you think about it the thing that really like what. You're saying todd. I totally agree with you. Know it seems that that novak didn't quite have the legs that he normally has. But also i think the emotional strain of all the stuff and we saw that early in the second set when he had that and and then the crowd The music started playing and they ended up having to play to and novak snap at that point in the match and he really kind of like went over the edge there and never quite got himself completely back. I think that was such a vital moment in the match and it showed like where he was with the emotional aspect of with everything that was going on and then again in the third towards the end when he sat down on that one change over in the crowd started chanting his name and he had the towel over his head in the end. It was actually in tears. He was in tears with the sense. That you know the crowds actually behind me. And everything and i think those two things really showed the degree of tension and emotion. That was carrying. And i think that had a lot to do with it as well. I don't i don't you know as as much as an ice man and he gets through all these matches you know. I don't think any of us can have a complete idea of what he was dealing with in trying to win that. Casey i mean from i feel sometimes that now. Evac e polarizing disney has a massive fan by spirits. One or the other. You're in the camp or you not it same. I can today that. He became more human to a lot of the tennis community. That haven't been on his side. Yeah you read my mind todd. The word human Stands out to me. It was kind of nas to say that side to novak. I think that that human inside in a sense of all of those emotions. But just a medvedev i was kind of. I was really happy to see him win. I know we know how good joke of each is and what he's achieved but for the men's game and saying medvedev out there and take it to jovic on the stage and get the crowd behind him. I was really really through from medvedev. I was rooting for him. In your words. Brad numeric inside. Because i just thought it was just a really great shift in the men's game as you mentioned those youngsters alcoa's sierra and just saying that generation medvedev slam but then also saying those younger kids beneath really show that mark their foot on the men's to but yes. I'm really good story. Lines there from the us open. Hey brad at the coalface of the country breath. These days given that haven't been able to get caught side and see the generation practice as much as i would have liked you do and are having seen that you're at penn may have wins. "Thirty eight. He's ten and six now. Ten seven against the top fifty felix at that age. Fifty seven percent win percentage had thirty. Seven wins to alvarez twenty three three. Atp finals to alvarez's one now no titles. But he also made five semi-finals seven quarterfinals. So all numbers greater than out breath still albeit with six more months but you know again four challenger titles highest ranking number. Twenty one he had sixteen wins over top fifty opponents. What i'm trying to say is that alcatraz and felix are on very similar paths. So all the excitement your feeling for carlos out breasts just remember that was felix three years ago and he's still only twenty one years old just turned twenty one as well now into a i slam semi-final he's earned it again it. It's been slow and steady for him. Four years of growth on the break percentage. It's a career high. This season for years of growth on the hold percentage. It's a career high this season. Now it's not a gaudy top ten number on either wing yet but the first serve when it's landing can delete and the reason. Those numbers aren't in the top. Ten number is because of consistency. He's just he doesn't bring he doesn't have that a game a hundred percent of the time. Now now he's up to eighty five and in the primetime moments. I think he's now eight and four against top twenty opponents. This season felix has brought his best stuff. It's finding that best weekend week out day in day out though make the difference between him being world number one or him being top fifteen guy but honestly with the development. We've seen in this past six months. I think that floors now. Top fifteen that serve that forehand a weapon to two special and again physically. He continues to get more and more fluid more powerful quicker as a mover and so dangerous dangerous prospects for the rest of the men's game felix. Osceola obvious seem into a i slam semi-final. We're now again. He matches up with the neo medvedev. And for those of you curious right now. Medvedeva eighty seven point two favorite according to our friends at tennis abstract minus six fifty favorite according to our friends at draft kings. Of course that's day. Eleven match before we get to that. We have day ten the back half of our quarterfinals where i want to end today's show. It's obviously first time matchup between Amerada keanu belinda. Bench bench in eighty two point two percent favorite in that match. You look at the odds. I believe she's minus one sixty now. I made the full case for bench. Overwrought keanu honor. Gsp of the day previewed. I think all four of the matches. So i suppose if you're looking for the extensive preview content had over there but again. I'll read these numbers for you quickly. You look for carrying applicable. She is a slight moneyline favourite tomorrow as well minus one thirty over maria soccer tennis abstract also lists her the favourite fifty two point five percent so those odds properly reflecting of the analytics. Of course you look for plus go. Soccer one in one in their career had two heads plus a beater in.

"Download. Tennis dot com. And let's move on to the men's side of drill because had a couple of results today and some from yesterday to discuss. Let's have a look at what we've seen safe today. We've had sashes zverev winning through against janik center in straight-sets six four six four seven six. They smashed kind of just had like regulation six. Four sets retinal labor until cut a bad game. that third-set was probably would have said shit. Senate will be annoyed with himself. He really should push that to four and then it could may be a bit more interesting but again ashiq. Another example of severe mental game really improving the season the fact that he was able to slam the door. yes yes. I think. Cinema hat opportunities wet. He would have expected to make them. But at the same time phys verify you shut that down and get it done in three sets not an easy opponent very impressive from him absolutely you know he said after the match you know that that was over dodgy gave me through it and You know managed to save the set points at center at and get get the job donovan in straight-sets because i she said if you're going on into a fourth well he knows they would've been embroiled. You could have got on longer but yeah gemini speaking. It was a high level kind of performance from from zverev. Bit weighed in the pace. Much press conference beat at every talking about how he'd won obviously the olympic gold and he made a comment about the. He sleeps with his gold medal because he doesn't have go friend and oversee in light of the allegations that have been going round. It just was a little over it. It would hit yet. We have an old thing to say The best thing to say yeah. We'll leave that's a we that i think But yes i mean the loss and they played a slam center. Had actually in a beaten variable are that was. When's variables was ill last year. The french but Yeah i think this was the result. This i pretty much expected. But we've say today had running a poker against loyd harris and fill that one was pretty even via poker and his pink back at his peak bag yet which came onto score again day. He was not gonna let that pink bag. Go funnily enough today. I think it had on approved a written on the side of it so i take no if he'd like written on himself because it gallery. Yeah exactly i just became a big talking point on social media She's quite off but it didn't didn't do the magic power because he did lease in four sets to to lloyd harris. He's he's quickly kind of becoming quite thing he's had some good wins hair. He's going to be upset. I always the top thirty in the world. So he's radi putting together a very impressive tournament yeah. He has been very very very very good discipline particularly his serving. I mean it his match against palca a he won ninety two percent Of points on his serve and he was having it. Seventy six percent say it sort of reminds me of the dub biz. Bertini was it was starting out What is the school season He's he's just playing one match time and is just being very very smoothly and is very impressive from him if who we call him early because of that win against the dow in in washington. Dc and east carrying on threes usa and now into the quarter-finals. It's very very good. I'm not racial where it's gonna lead him to of whether he could get to the the who knows but it was one of those matches day whereas a fan you kind of it like are they going to be eddie extended rallies these matches. 'cause we die lloyd. Harris likes to finish his finish points at the net and so does palca to be fat. Swim so you know it was maybe not one. Maybe for the the the the fans who enjoy may be a bit of point construction an extended rallies but certainly for loyd harris to get done in four sets over a palca not only only take into one tiebreak actually that that was very very impressive so you must be returning serve very well as well as a pocket didn't didn't seem to have Much answer for much answer. Very after that i yeah i saw a stat which Which say harasses. I think the seventh player who actually out aced a poker in a march along the likes of he people are is ner and medvedeva. He is he is he coming. Riches record well. I mean perhaps yeah. I mean that's going to be some beatty. I think he's quite they're just able to do more than palca was quite something he was. He has a. But i'm yeah we've go osco also against mataya bertini on at the moment as we're recording auto three love up in the second set But i haven't really been watching this avidly as we've been recording by off scouter falling over the net in the second game which was quite an interesting to say but yet we've got jovic tacoma's well against an edge and brooks bay but last night we had a match. I really wasn't sure. Which way gay. Because i thought it was again. Pretty pretty even on paper and that was francis. Tefa against phoenix oj. Elliot's seem and in the end. That was a full set win for faa from a set down four six exchange seven. Six six four so he has reached. Upper quarterfinal You know he reached the wimbledon final. And now he's reached the gold frano's hair he's actually the youngest man to have done that since dope poultry to reach back back grandson called finals over he is still a very young things about twenty s and he still say We feel like he's been around for years. It's just he through quite quite young. Well yeah and also. It's it's since since his partnership with uncle to- From the rap it's it's is really reaping rewards. Now isn't it we. It wasn't it wasn't necessarily a an instant instant fakes but certainly given the time that they have spent. They openly gelling really well together on its particularly working well at the slams and fact that he's into the quarterfinals is is very very good because this was a match. I think you know maybe a few seasons the guy particularly that third-set tie-break. I think this is much. He he may be would have lost against In front front of boisterous crowd. That third-set tie-break. It really did hang on that and he was able to come through. A six was very very impressive and he was able to kind of carry through. Because i do sometimes think whether he steps onto call a knows knows what he's doing like we know he's got his talent but does he do what to do with it and i think that's uncle. Tony has added to his game. He's he's telling him right now. You've got talent. This is what i want you to do. And i think that's what helped him against as well i think it helped him against A cfo who has had a very good run here. I think he gave a very good account of himself and again. I think it will be a realization to him again. He he can be one of those players who can reach the quarterfinals potentially Of a grand slam isn't far away from in this match. And i think it will give him good motivation in the future..

"Wedged loss at try rate but he really did look at the end like much stronger player and like you said it. Just saying he had a bit more just the halt behind and he's had a difficult difficult caveat everything and for him to get through to equal his best. Ever grand slam showing yeah. He reached the fourth-round couple years ago at the australian any putin but that was before. I think he went on was that would that be. That would've been before. He went on his ban as well. You know like different passan back. Then we've spoken before. I think speaking before this about the evans and he does love playing the. Us open that. Will i think there would be some people. In fact you probably will say that this best chance not not wimbledon but the. Us open is his best chance of of going deepest because there is something about the colts. Here the Yeah he he really acclimatize very well and again in this match he just you just want to eat just wanted it that a little bit more than popper in and i do wonder given the i think the setbacks that he has had since you're wimbledon with coded and affecting his his run-up i think that was maybe giving that little bit of extra fight in him. The i think with popper in you could tell with his body language on koi scanning a bit. You know he's getting kind of fatigued and use liaoning little bit negative and honestly while it had a very good feeding when it went into that type right. I was kinda glad it it. It did to match cyber waiting to get to twelve or whatever in another in another a grand slam. But some yeah. It was a very once they got there. I had a good feeling that we've evans. And yet he looked on the fresh apply by the end of it. Absolutely an unfortunate eacho as we recording. Now he's got his fourth route much against daniel medvedev not an easy much am. He's two sets down six three six four. I which i think was pretty much. Why expected i said oh was going to be like straight-sets three and four isn't it. I remember we message the board eggs. Egg don evans is now won his right to to lose to daniel medvedev in in straight sets in the next round it looks. It looks like the prophesy is coming tree unless he can pull off another comeback from jesus down just lightning strike twice. I mean whomever is from his section of the draw. He is looking like the whole favorites. You get through the final. He's come through very very comfortably. Safe all his previous rounds. Against andy hall on you know if he section of the draw. He's bought it van. Dijon shoop it's looking like it's going to be bought rhonda's on show who's three level up into fifth sagan's diego schwartzman. So it's you know. I really see people in his section anyone's gonna stop method of really guessing through to the final especially now that the system passes us. Yeah and replant yet. Exactly you saw to think this was a big day For medvedev and his chances and the fact that he has been so clinical with his victory so far you know he's not been he's not had to expend a lot of energy to get to the stage of the competition. He's going to be very fresh. And i think he will arguably he might if he gets to the final he should be fresher than potentially a a joke of it. She will have maybe had come. Through a zara You in the semifinal potentially so all seems every figures is is cut a folded into place for for medvedeva the movement for his tennis also is just. It's just very very good. And yes maybe some of his opponent saw but lower ranked than him but he is definitely having. He's definitely just steamrolling them and putting them to the sword. Yeah although i think he it would be more beneficial to competitive final if he could have some sort of a challenge beforehand because you know he might come into the final and then just getting stroke of it. I just can see the australian eighth and final happening again from this year. Which was quite disappointing and really kind of went went just lost the plural j. You want to see that again. Thank you very much. So we'll see it does seem like he's the favourite but yeah. Let's have a look at what happened in the women's game. Joe because we've had quite a few shocks of the las t days especially on the side of the top seeds because you know up the fetchy rounds none of the top twenty seasons out. We had like pretty much the talk twenty hair. I'm jennifer brady had had pulled out with injury but the we haven't seen any of the top top seeds fooling out in the first round or e- but Obviously round three has changed without because we've now lost a sarcoidosis in sparty. Let's start with the assault match because she was up against. Leyla on if anandas the young canadian. And i mean she lost in three sets Five seven seven six foibles chief and anez and assault very close the sheep. She just wanted not second-set-tiebreaker she would have etched it This is much on paper. That really should have won quite easily. Expose but she just wasn't wasn't at the races really It was it was a novice disappointing performance in a way she she hasn't. She hasn't won many matches the tool in the lawsuit. She doesn't mean out to win. More than one match consecutively since whatever It's been she's oversee. Her troubles are still continuing. She's not where she wants to be and she's going to be taking more of a break from tennis. I think after this yeah and from a performance point of view. There is a question what they're about her against left handed players which people of picked up on social media. She lost her later any fantasies. He's left handed. She also lost to jill titan as well. He's a left handed player and She lost someone else. Recently say was left. Handed com name escapes me. But she does seem to have a problem with left-handed players at the moment and i don't know if that's a that's a thing. If she if she is coming back to the court that she will need to look at maybe a little bit more tactically oversee the service. The you know. The one of the biggest advantages i think as a as a lefty that you have particularly not at sajjan garh wyden think really pin down the the assault back canned which is arguably a little bit weaker than a full hand and i sat anything that helped. Leyla any fernandez mismatch. Because you know i. She's very good prospect particularly for canadian. Tennis i still you know i've seen. I've seen a few matches still not really sure what her biggest weapons all. And i think being left handed does help her. But that was one of the reasons. I was so surprised that we had this. You know this this loss by soccer. Because i thought this could have been quite a routine straight-sets victory but i mean fernandez. What she is i think. Nine for his hub self belief and had nasty anti grit call which certainly there were moments..

"Are all star college tennis analyst. But don't forget folks. He's got a lot of thoughts on the pros as well joining us on the show today. It's math the cracks that kodiak mattie hey great shot first time in a long time it is great to have you back on the show. How you doing my friend. Doing great man doing great It's been a good summer. lots going on. I know you're busy. I'm busy everyone's busy but we finally reached kind of the culmination. Here we got. We got the us open man so Super excited to get this role in no doubt about that and we have a lot to talk about on. Today's show first and foremost of course a men's singles draw preview. What we're going to do on this show like we do on all of our previews run through the four sections of the draw answer. Four questions per section as well. We'll talk about these seeds on upset alert. We'll talk about the dark horses that can do some damage. We'll talk about the best first round matches and then of course. We're going to give some predictions as well but before i get into any of that while there has been plenty of college tennis results and i think there are twenty players with college tennis ties in this. Us open mattie. We talk all the time during the college tennessee's in about the strength in the level of play in the game right now i think that has manifested itself pretty clearly at the twenty twenty one. Us open but before we get into any of that. I wanna ask you a broad picture here about the atp tour because a spin while since we've talked curious to hear your thoughts but be it does feel like we're in the midst of a generational shift perhaps more pronounced than ever right now on the atp to and of course this is something you and i have been talking about since two thousand seventeen twenty eighteen. We first started doing the podcast but perhaps now more than ever. It feels very very clear that the generational shift has occurred. Perhaps there's even a new hierarchy at the top of the men's game. So i just want to run some stats by run some numbers. Get your thoughts. You look at where we are. At this season. there have been forty. Eight events played twenty nine total players. Mattie have won titles here in this twenty twenty one season. I believe there are eleven first time title winners here this year as well you look at the list of players who have won multiple titles to me. This is the most telling part there are twelve players with multiple titles. Jovovich has four. He's obviously still. His best is the best on the. Atp tour. i don't think anyone's denying that. Bought zero got four routes got four medvedev scott three then you get to the group of sinner. Her cats see poss- bertini. Pcb demon our bacilus v lee. That's the outlier demon our honestly a little outlier re as well and then rafael. Nidal with two. But what i'm trying to say they're mattie and you look at the clubs. I like to make tennis abstract. Top ten top. Fifteen top twenty. Who are twenty five in. Hold and break percentage. It's the same names medvedeva joke which both top ten rooplek nidal's vera of top fifteen club. Rude and carrots have who's your one outlier top twenty and then cc. Poss and team top twenty five now missing from there as matteo bertini who with his backhand return you can understand why is a little bit lower in terms of break percentage but mattie. I think we've got our new hierarchy. I think we have our ten guys. That matter it's jovic medvedev's ct poss- obviously dominant team. Win houthi andrea rube love matteo bertini and then honestly you start to throw in guys like casper. Rude guys..

"You get to. The women's what scares me is and if you go listen to our dsp. Top five singles contenders. You'll hear me lay out this exact case to go gross. I agree i mean again. Look at the evidence. He outplayed joke. Vich and the olympic match jovic didn't play his best in the second sadden through the third. But sheriff was better than him. Through three of the four sets. Zero was leading in their australian. Open battle this year and he played better than joke. Which i'd say for sixty percent of the match just not for the important forty percent of the parts And yet you look at that olympic gold that followed it up with the western southern open. I agree with you from a tennis standpoint. His best now is better than the rest of the field except jovovich and if he plays his best jovic does not he can beat novak and that it would be in a semi-final and not the final. I think benefits fear of immensely. And so i i completely agree with you that that would be the pick at the same time man that match thou. Hopefully we get it. I just hope we get the joke of its era of semi-final. I mean that implies rooting for zero even those earlier from a tennis point who rudy root for jokers europe match. I mean the joke. Rich diehards root for joke vich but the general tennis twitter oil. The thing is it's such a straw man. Like when djokovic fans like everyone attacks novak. It's like no what attacks novak no one. Everyone acknowledges novak is about to set history and obviously do all these different things anyways. I agree like it's a clear three man race it's jovic it's fear of its medvedev and no one slept better after the draw revealed into neo frigging medvedev. Who's like i don't have to play zero for joke. Vich and just dancing and hotel room and doing all these things. Yeah i'm gonna pick jovic. Just because i i know i don't know i sell more day. I haven't read my answers yet. So i'm gonna take. I mean i'm leaning. Jovic is the truth. I'm leaning joke. Which i just think he's going to be able to do it but i do. Think fear is capable of beating medvedeva's as well just because in this format three out of five men monster and so. I think it's a very huge thing that's for was thrown into jacobites. Hof because you know when he has to go through like better. Tease verified that to win the yourself by end the connor slum. That's really like people of his. And if you're on your way to winning the us the biggest updates dennis. Something has been done in men's tennis in your over fifty years then getting for something like this would be so. Maybe maybe the best that Ever really i think it's really huge that He's half actually. Yeah no again. It's going to be fascinating to watch but with that in mind. Women selection who you got valley. "Last year and that would inevitably creep into his head but in the semifinals when job riches pursuing all of that and zerorez playing that match with nothing to lose he was up breaks in three of the four sets in their australian open match. This year that he lost in four. I think it could happen at. He's the guy to me. And i know you may think is it's a heartache. Just because the last two events. No if you've listened to this podcast if you're listening at the thirty six minute mark you know from a tennis perspective of always felt this way about sphere of game. I think the rest of the world seeing it now too because his best is that good he can just hit the ball that big that dynamic from baseline. You're not supposed to be able to do that all that fluidly at his size and he can and it's it's a wonder again. He had his own. In this event he ends up taking the title. Another masters title for him. He's the leader in the clubhouse title total titles masters one thousand titles evolved the gen crew. He's on pace again. He's the guy right now if the bat is is alex fear of going to end up in the hall of fame. Yes or no. If it's purely from tennis perspective the answer is yes because in terms of the benchmarks. He's clearing them all and it just feels like that grand slam title is the last thing we're waiting to see from him. But of course that's enough on zverev. Let's switch gears now and talk about andrea rupe live. Have we ever seen a player. Who i who were more sure is going to be the best version of themselves at some point on tour during their career than andre rupe love the intensity he plays with the passion. He plays with the fire he plays with. Can it be self destructive. Absolutely at times it can and i think the frustration With medvedeva in the ups and the downs of that match. Just warm out heading into that. Final against vera of. But i mean the patients. He showed in that medvedev match. And we know. We're not gonna talk about camera gate here because it's all been litigated to be honest. I don't really care. Like i know i should care. I know i should. I know camera play. The it's indicative as madame says it's indicative of the larger trends that there needs to be a players union and that there just aren't people thinking through these things. Why are the dimensions of the court in cincy different than the dimensions of the court in toronto. Wasn't there just a uniform station plays. The camera always is step. Players are always aware of those circumstances. Yes all of those things ring true at the same time don't be thirty feet behind the baseline like and don't don't kick over a camera. That's never a good book and you know it's never good kicking things over. No one has ever been like kick that over and everyone's like yeah. He kicked it over like. That's that's never. Maybe the berlin wall. But that wasn't kicking that you know you're not kicking out wallover you're bringing that bad boy down Anyways all of that is to say. I don't care. I don't care about camera gate. I care about the tennis we saw unfolding and would andre rube. Love was able to do was outlast. "It's unlikely joe but that may happen because he has pulled out of toronto and cincinnati because of a setback with his injury. So is he going to participate in the year as apron. Potentially if he does is he going to. Just be very undercooked with with no matches in advance. And if so you know he's you've got thing he's not going to do realistically that well as a result. Yeah i mean it's not it's not. It's not great news. You know hearing the fact that he's had to pull out of toronto in cincinnati. And i think that it will be of big disappointment for fat fans is a big disappoint. I think for tennis fans in general. You know i was hoping to see you. Know flushing meadows Just to see you know the big three. I think just out the fact that they are all on twenty grand signs it. Just be great. I think just to see them all participating there That might still happen. It might not. Yeah we all know. Federal construct was at the moment particularly with this kind of pesky knee injury and it has got people thinking in terms of well. I if if he's not going to be paying these mosses events and not puts his you know his participation. us open in doubt law slam of the year realistically. You won't see you're gonna come back for and yes there. There is the you know the labor cup Basel as well so you know that's probably still things that could tempt him to kind of come back play some tennis. I mean the labor cup. I guess it doesn't necessarily have to be there in a playing capacity but yet the news at the moment is is not great and yeah. It's a bit. it's a bit disappointing. And i think the most disappointing thing about it is you know someone of roger federer's stature. You know you want to go out on his terms you know in the sport you know the disposal. He's given so much to just feels like at the moment. Maybe this this injury It's is arguably robbing him of being able to to do that. Yes as row shame. Because i just thought after the surgery in that time off he had that he would be able to withstand the tool for bit longer but perhaps not You know he has already paid an awful lot of matches. Then the lost seasons and lost your of c. Diff difficult from forever but we will await further. News from from camp fetch. I just wanted to where he still like. Just dropping out of the french open because he he this is officer shows. He's obviously in a fragile state at the moment. And you just. I think take grand slams for. He will grandsons for granted. But you know you should just take them as take them as they come and you know yes. You have to plan strategy. Is you'll season and you'll see his felt. That was the best thing to do at the time and it was a great cheapen i think in hindsight him getting to the finals of wimbledon. But yeah you do what you diesel. Wonder that he was in the second week of the franchise from whether he could have given what's gone on since whether he had a had an opportunity perhaps to perhaps not go out in the necessarily in the in the way that he did. Yeah that that decision did some people say. Yeah she kind of temporary forgotten about that say perhaps it was By on the bummer. Bet but some. Let's look at the National bank opens joe. It's going on this week. Basically the rogers cup. They've kind of changed the way it said So the men are in toronto but just tried to make it a bit more concise and pithier with that with that mutahi to him. Yeah i mean it sounds so much better. Doesn't it anyway. Toronto montreal for the women the men. There's no jovic So no zverev after the olympics We've got medvedeva top seed rougher seconds aid pretty much of. What else is there. I would say Overseas sinner going into as the washington. Dc champ Go back after his wedding lovely. I would go casper. Rude omaha court so interesting. See how he can transfer his recent klay prowess onto the north american hardcourts. Yes quite is quite interesting drawer and again is there's no real letup really for the top two seeds. I mean let's start with with method. I mean he's going to face. The winner of dan evans versus alexander booklet. Which could be a that. Could be very fun. Match i think. And then we kind of A boxer early came rather could face lloyd harris again in his opening match in Toronto lloyd house has to come through qualify first of all Also in that section of what we do have carrio specis radio poker. I think that's all the night session tonight. and the winner plays grigor dimitrov. Yeah i mean a a harrison adele matt second match that could be called. Og not could be quite interesting. I be inches that he surely think that would be able to as revenge if that much. If that much came to fruition. Well i think yeah. I think harris paid quite well tactically last week and i'm sure rafeh wouldn't let that happen again. He definitely would learn from from harasses tactics and put that in the bud. I think i think yeah. I think i'd give the edge. You think would make the same mistakes twice. I think that was a one off. Upset torchwood she says we've also go. I mean unseat unseat. Both players unseeded by feel plays up in the you know playing really really good. Tennis amendment cam nori ss karen kachin of With the wind plane crash save. I mean nori catching. That could also be quite as quite tasty. I think first match. Ben perr against because but dodo does well and bricks be is on a on a wildcard. Actually he's in quite favorable part. The draw could come up against alex manure if he comes through bassil billy as well in in the fast around. I mean brick speed manual. That is going to be if that happens. That's the number of extended rallies expected. Batch is going to be off the charts. Because i feel that both those players are quite be quite defensive and it will be a very much. A game of chess will decide to school. Yeah it's quite cool. Some of these matches none is that that opening for a owned the uso swing. Say i mean you predicting any joe are you gonna go top seed mevdev eager to think is he her cash gonna gonna ask sheba how she's a cha i'm wondering if shop olov At home he does have. He does like playing. Hey but he also except coda in in his eight-match which again will be quite tough casper. Rude is he going to be able to just kind of continue on his On his full yeah. I'm not sure. I mean i'm i feel i'm going to have to go with a. I'm just looking at the drawn out of my head. I think yeah maybe. Yeah i think maybe medvedev. We'll get to the get to the final. I'm not sure about nidal. I think he'll do better than he did. In in dc I'm wondering whether maybe an unseeded player. Maybe mackenzie donald again could Spring a surprise baton. Yeah i think medvedev early. I think i will be able to get through to the final. Not not hate life doing so like he like. He did like you did at the olympics and they become free with the title. Yeah my my inclination is also towards medvedev. I think yes. I'd love rafferty well in cd better than last week. But a date thing. He has enough yet to go all the way he needs to be on. I know i think he's building opposite. I e stephanos sits pass. Haven't even mentioned him he. He's there as well so it's quite it's quite report when you don't have the likes of chuck rich In the. But i mean what's even more even is probably the the monetary all of the women which is. Oh sorry because it's the montjeu. It's the omnium bonk nationale which i probably madrid with my fred jackson..

"That. We can play this semi final. Yeah it was. Kind of incredible to say never djokovic back on court. I think it was on court one. It wasn't even on the sensical just moments after this really on the shing defeats ferry wit. You know normally normally tennis lose if they lose in a big match and you see them for a little bit. They're able to just go away and he was just publicly back out. That was a very weird situation Just on that point david of him being thirty seven at the next olympics. Who knows it. It's kind of fascinating. How these these careers of these players can seem so set in one direction and then suddenly changed. I mean how many times have we thought it was gonna be the leader at the end of it. Or how many times we in the dull. Now we think it's jackovitch but i do wonder whether having the olympics three years time is the sort of thing that might even extend novak djokovic career. You know it. It can be something that he aims for. Something that motivates him when he's done everything else on clay roland garro paris. I mean i do think klay is the surface where his game has declined a little bit and it seems like a ridiculous thing to say in the year that he won vote on garo speech and rough on the dog. But i do think he's more vulnerable on that surface. But we'll say it's it is fascinating. I go back to twenty fifteen when he when he lost Levering at the french open that that felt like a crushing loss at the time of backhands fizzing past him. Beaten dolly beaten murray. He was set up to win the french open for the first time he lost. And i thought gosh okay. When x yaacob age he won the next fool. Slams this is this is a guy who can absorb blows and bounce back but these done that in the past doesn't mean necessarily we'll be able to do it again. I just fascinated by what this result does for the next weeks and months and years ahead. It's just changed things. I thought we were going in one direction. We've we've taken a different turning By the way the idea of threes time the olympics at rolling gareth's being current dangling before now that chocolate sydney academy. I wonder whether and raphael sold about it. Well he already has gold. In fact he has singles and doubles golden mixed doubles. Knowing gets there though. Catherine i mean with suarez navarro out of retirement though they well i understand very afterwards told the media. All this war is an adult. Oh the ones from yesterday again. It was merit surpass which passed Maria sakari salary Steph came up with the biz for both imperialist i thought that was a moment of just. S- tarnishing genius and quickly discovered onto the others. Already come up with that are well. I'm still impressed. Catherine biz isn't it. Yes i prefer beers on muthu. After that i was gonna say david tells us about last night. Three of them. And i've not felt good today. That's all. I felt behind everything that i've done. I've not really being on. It means bustles not paint fakes and he's six foot seven. What's that message is just getting one tech on our group. They weren't going through today with the woman that is on. The heard of david is is a fast reply and is sending what saps for any time from four thirty. Am on what we were pushing ten o'clock and there was nothing from david genuinely concerning. Yeah well what can i say it was talking about what you said to the net. And he said i mean he was. He was tearfully. He was very emotional and he said he'd said to him the greatest of all time and this won't change that and he he's gotta finish the job. Though doesn't iridium i would. I saw you know he's into the olympic final and if he would lose this final now that would be massively bittersweet really. I would thought he's playing. Karen hatching of who's to to me a surprise finest but well what an opportunity. Baker public arena busta. Today six three six three. And and i think i think that could be quite a good match hat chenoweth verve. You know i kind of feel hatching of is gonna bring it and have a right go. What do you think matt quite interesting. Head to head to all and hacks nuts won the last two and one them pretty handily. I mean they weren't. They weren't that recent over two thousand eighteen in paris when he went on to win the title and Twenty nine teen in canada. I think they were both straight sets. Wins the second set of action of today. And i thought he was good. I thought he was playing exactly the way you would want action of to play which was imposing that big game serving well hitting big forehands. Just kinda nonsense. Didn't even get involved in a real tussle with karanja pasta. Which i thought he might. He just him like he like. You should be able to with that big game. So that was. That was impressive. I thought actually this. This last month has been has been impressive. I was beginning to think of action of the fourth russian. Having been the first really to to break into the top ten medvedeva overtaken group lev had given corrective start. The air was more relevant action of wimbledon quarter-final relegated to the role of russia's secret. Yeah so it's impressive. what action of doing. And gosh that that win over. Kenya booster was great. But in light of djokovic. It's now presented him with a real opportunity. I mean i think still the favourite for that match but he's got a much better chance of beating various thing than he would have done yaacob age. Well i i always think as well have interviewing Dementia maybe about year after. She won the gold medal. And you could tell that it didn't really matter what else she did in her career. Or what gone before. That was going to be enough to feel massively satisfied as terrorist plaque. Can i ask a hypothetical question. Yeah i'm gonna ask it now because it could be completely irrelevant. Come sunday up implemented level hypothetical just trying to work out how you view an olympic gold. And you know it's it significance. If half of wins on sunday who's career today would you rather have hatches or medvedev's hatch enough. I you know i would. I would sell my soul to the devil for an olympic gold. Doctor faustus style. That's really crush to date. So am i. Do i have to assume that medvedev never.

"That's behind you when you're momentum's going one way whether that's to open space after he's ripped you off the court cross court his ability to mix in the dropshot. He's obviously getting. he's better as volume again. His two passing shot combos the best immense tennis history. The guys physical freak any put enough balls in play in particular made enough returns in the two breaks. He's able to get at the end of the at the end of sets. Two and three again. This was a seven six seven five seven five affair. You look for novak djokovic in this tournament winning eighty five percent of his first-serve points. Now we only one eighty one percent of this match but only eighty one percent. Are you kidding. Me when novak djokovic is winning eighty five percent of his first-serve points. How do you beat him. Like how seriously accurate shot pot if you have the recipe recipe. Please tell me because you look at his numbers this year. According to tennis abstract he's breaking serve thirty six percent of the time the only season in his career that number trails is his twenty eleven historic breakthrough on novak freaking joke which i'm here to play season outside of that version. Who won what his i like. Thirty eight matches of the year. This novak djokovic by the metrics and again level of competition is different. I'm not saying twenty twenty one joke which beats twenty eleven dote of edge but the fact that we have been entertaining that conversation a decade later speaks to this man to excellent but by the metrics. He's breaking serve as well as he did then. And he's holding serve eighty five percent of the time at this wimbledon. You just don't beat that. Novak joke fitch and again his ability in the biggest moments the biggest pressure stages to just make that extra ball to make you uncomfortable to go big down the line. Go big cross court do a little bit of everything. That's what makes him the most special player in the game right now. That's what makes him. A historically you know historic brilliance. That's what makes him in the conversation if not at the top of the conversation and you already know my opinion as the greatest men's tennis player of the open era. But you look for him. Make sixty one percent of his first-serve points wins. Eighty one percent of his points win wins. Fifty seven percent of his second serve eighty five percent at the net twenty to thirty three. That's ridiculous three of ten on break points. Thirty three winners against fifteen unforced. There's now again so much. Credit to dennis chiappa ball. Forty winners against thirty six unforced. There's your unforced. Error count has to be that high. When you're playing novak djokovic because you can't plan his terms you can't lollygag unless your name's neil medvedev. Who might be the one person in the game right now. Who i'm not gonna say is able to match novak djokovic just physicality but on hard court over the course of five sets you know not at the australian open. But if they're both playing their best medvedev trying to make the match physical against the thirty four year old joke that you can at least sort of understand that strategy. Because he's got the big first serve to go along with it but the point is in less your that medvedeva's along tangen. You gotta go for your swings. You gotta go for your shots gotta plan your terms and if you missed so be it. But it's better to miss plan. Your terms than to get novak djokovic out on the court and that's what chef evolved that he played on his terms forty winners against thirty six unforced stairs thirty thirty nine at the net..

"Lorenzo synagogues eneko breaks back down five four in the first set federal immediately gets the break back. Holds out four seven five. The serve was landing with confidence. It allowed him to be more aggressive on the return. He did a good job of withstanding. The first strike power in anticipating where that first strike was going from laurindo synagogue. And then you know again serve four. And when he's on his front foot. He's roger freaking federer into the quarter-finals. Once again remains undefeated seventeen to now plus a withdraw victory technically eighteen in in eighteen round of sixteen matches eighteenth quarter-final at a single grand slam. Is it's stupid. it's absolutely stupid. But again fetter rounding this was good for him because he's often straight-sets as well and you know now his opponents in this was the best scheduling conspiracy theory and let's be clear. It was horrible. That alliott tomjanovich in End emma a. I'm blanking out on her last name right now. You know the emma. I'm talking about emma I'm blanking out route account. Radikal new That they are ad at her and tomjanovich were forced to play a night match that they weren't one of the immediately one first or second on a given chord given the fact that it's the women's quarterfinal matches tomorrow. That was an absolute joke. That's the one you yell at if the tournament committee and we don't know winter medvedeva haircuts and said. Hey you guys wanna potentially wait for federal senegal. We don't know how long it's going to go. I think it was a set and a half through federal was leading at the time. The rain started to come. But if they're like hey do you guys wanna play tonight. And they're like now. We'll just play tomorrow. That's fine then. There's no fault and get it all. But i love the conspiracy theories of wimbledon telling her cats and medvedev. No you guys are playing tomorrow. And the reason they did that is to help roger fetter because they want roger federer to advanced to the quarter to the semi-final stay alive in the tournament so because of that they're making her cats and medvedev play tomorrow making that potential quarterfinal match with medvedev the third consecutive play. Either of those day. Either of those guys would have been playing. That's just beautiful conspiracy and again with how quickly veteran scenario finished i think if medved haircuts.

Australian Open 2021: Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev Meet for the Title

"The crusade for the men's singles crown comes to an end tomorrow. And when the undisputed king of rod laver arena novak djokovic takes on russian number-one neil medvedev the world number one djokovic. Gunning for a history-making ninth championship in melbourne. While the russian authors seeking his twenty first consecutive win and first major title to preview the match. I'm joined by not edwards and commentator. Nick mcardle nick at the start of in fact two weeks before this we had you on the show podcast and you picked this matchup is that what led you to make that cole way back. Then let's say lucked out. Let's be honest that wasn't necessarily total. Total fluke made many wrong picks before but coming in you know we talk about the twenty one matches in a row for osaka. It's twenty in a row for daniil. Medvedev the non includes a win over novak djokovic close twenty twenty i think medvedev has really come into his own as someone expects himself not only to go deep. Atp events which we've seen the last couple of years but now to really do at at the grand slam so the drop laid out for him. I think he's played to each match to the level now. Can he bring an eight time. Grand slam australian open champ. Seventeen time major winner novak djokovic. Can he meet that level in a final thoughts really eighty s. What i love most is after medvedev bates itsy pass in that semi final is that he said stride away. All the pressure is on novak. He just load him up because he's plight fonsi before and never lost and it sorta. But i love how he just playfully. Put that out there and look. I think he'll come at. He'll show you'll be a little bit nervous. But i think he's just going to swing freely and that backhands i mean. Gosh they both have terrific backhands. But it's going to be like jock itch playing a twenty five year old vision of himself. It's going to be such an interesting match. I really count. Wait for the all similar. It can not just in court croff necessarily but as personalities both very eloquent and sort of personable somewhat chiming in front of the camera but they do have this white line fever as we know totally. I love those points that you've made and i think medvedeva's become more comfortable without. We sought the us open a couple years ago in the crowd. Really got against him and he used that as fuel which i think djokovic has have that in the past that in the past for sure for sure for jovic against rafa roger. He's felt that too. I really think that it is an opportunity for medvedev lake. Nona saying just swing for the fences and the scary thing is when he swings for the fences. Oftentimes the ball goes in. And i really think he's going to use that experience of beating novak in london last year at the atp finals. He'll really be geared up by that. Yeah i think so too. And i'm really looking forward to. I think the one area that novak can probably try to exploit daniels is that netplay. He's not very good. Let's let's be honest when it comes to netplay so if he can drawer him in a little bit and maybe draw that out. I think that puts pressure on daniel. Bit amid gets off to a flying start is going to be hard to stop.

"Can't you see? Do you dare to criticize the great David at amber and calf? I do indeed, for all the wonderful things he's done what he's doing in that, and I mean, I'm sure I agree with Michael almost everything but I talk in my book. I said, beware the climate. We so that when people talk about Humans is not actually humans. It's certain humans on this kind of universal izing off it on, But I'm looking at in my book is the way that women have been affected differently on dialogue. You even more than men, particularly women of color in the global South. And they have done least in the entire world to cause the climate crisis. Their carbon emissions are, you know, unspeakably low and yet they have bean so affected and they've also been excluded from the international and national conversation to a great extent. And even in this country, you know we are hosting the cop Climate Summit in Glasgow in November of this year. And what is the British government put together an all male delegation? I mean, it just is astounding. So I think that what what happens, is it If you start to talk about humans as an undifferentiated mass, you lose on understanding off. What Is the order the actual causes and the causes are not as sometimes it's suggested. Included by David Animal overpopulation by poor women in the Global South. It's over consumption by rich, mostly white people in the global North, mostly white men. Mike Fair point Yes, There's a big chunk of my book about inequality because ons absolutely right. But at the same time, you know, look, we is relevant because like it or not, all 7.8 billion of us on this boat together now on, we will sink or swim. Pretty well as one. So there's a kind of whole angle too. You know the respect that we need to universally apply to all humans that we've never been very good at briefly And do you write about how it's women that can lift us out of this crisis? I do indeed. Now I should make it really clear that I mean the title of my book is slightly misleading because It's gender equality rather than women. I mean the idea that women should add to that to do list of, you know, cooking, cleaning washing childcare. Oh, yes, I must fix the planet is anathema to me. But what we do know from a lot of research is that Seo Two emissions are lower in countries where women have higher political status on where women arm or involved in Decision making in government. The countries have a lower carbon footprint. So for a number of reasons, partly to do with the different attitude to risk between women and men. We know that promoting women that involving women much more centrally in the climate conversation than has been done up till now in most countries. Most international fora is one of the solutions, which is so often overlooked and cart from Mike Berners Lee are our guests on this edition off weekend.
