And, more importantly, it could completely up and convictions that already exist skill. So take this to the back. Criminal defense lawyers are not going to be filing various motions to throw of convictions based on this decision, so this 5 to 4 decision is extraordinarily consequential major victory for Native American rights And basically the Supreme Court, saying, You know what this is Indian country and Native Americans need a modicum of respect when it comes to the criminal justice is so this could also bring cases by the Cherokee Nation by the chicken songs by the Choctaws and Seminoles, all of whom are in a similar situation. Oh, I couldn't agree more. And in fact, in that vein aside chief Justice on this particular decision, Mr Roberts was warned in his dissenting opinion that this would absolutely wreak havoc in confusion. For the state of Oklahoma is criminal justice system. And look, I'm not voting one way or the other in terms of whether I agree of this fear of decision, But as an experienced criminal defense lawyer, I am telling you this is turning that criminal justice system in eastern Oklahoma. Of sight down because now indigenous people can't be prosecuted by state or local law enforcement, And instead they have to face justice in their own tribal or federal courts. Now, you know there is a light at the end of the tunnel because now there's going to be intense negotiations between tribal groups and local and state authorities to see what agreements can be reached, and hopefully everyone will move. In the right direction. This is an extraordinary decision that may impact other issues relating to tribal groups, not frankly, not only in the state of Oklahoma, but maybe in other states as well. "Thiss Is America changed forever from the CBS Audio Network. I'm Gil Gross. The Supreme Court made decisions this week that will change forever the presidency the availability of birth control, Although that may or may not be forever, we'll get into that and the way half of one of our states is ruled. We're joined by a Manny Medrano and Emmy Award winning attorney who covered the Supreme Court for a major network was a federal prosecutor who, by the way, never lost a jury trial. In the 10 years he served in the Lost Angeles U. S Attorney's office. And that included high profile prosecutions like the 1985 kidnapping, torture and murder of DEA Special agent Enrique Camarena in Mexico. He's now partner in the firm of Medrano and Carlton. Manny. Good to talk to you again. How are you doing all these great to chat with you go. Thanks for letting me join well. Let's start with the big headline. The two decisions about President Trump's taxes, which appeared first glance to be a win for the district attorney of Manhattan in New York City. But a setback or even outright loss for Democrats in Congress. It's all a little more complicated that let's start with that 7 to 2 decision that allows the Manhattan D a. Cyrus Vance Jr to get Donald Trump's tax records in a criminal investigation. What's this mean? Well, if we cut to the chase because it is a bit of a complicated decision with regard to Trump's financial read records and the release of those documents attend of the day. President Trump did his best to toe women access to these important financial documents. But the Queen Supreme Court basically in both cases in decisions of I 72 boats, where the chief justice wrote the majority opinion, basically said that those records will need to be produced. And the good news for President Trump is not gonna happen tomorrow. It's not gonna happen to well after The cupping of coming November election, So it does pay the way for the release of those documents. But at the end of the day in terms of Let's say any political damage to the president. It's gonna have virtually no effect at this early stage. One thing is that President Trump could apparently pardon himself for any federal crimes. If he chooses to do that. That doesn't seem to be anything in the Constitution that would stop him from doing that Advance is investigating state crimes Now what kind of protection does the president have? In terms of state crime well, and that's an excellent quite close because I've actually filed a request for petitions for pardons on behalf of federal inmates, and that invokes federal jurisdiction. Federal cases Gil so The president. The United States has no authority to pardon a state criminal conviction. So that's really nothing that could be of any assistance to Ah, President Trump. But as I said, what's key here? And what seems to be glossed over or miss why a lot of media outlets is the fact that you have a current sitting president of the United States. In the cross hairs of the district attorney and the grand jury investigation, and I could tell you this based on experiences. I've been doing this for many, many years in the criminal justice system. When you find yourself that's situated in that manner. More likely than not, you're going to be indicted on the congressional case. The ruling seemed to be the Congress could have his tax records. But it should be for something more specific, like an investigation of actual criminality that this request is part of just getting information for possible legislation. Seemed too much, even though they did not use this term, like a fishing expedition. If Vance were to make a criminal case in New York, and that's not a certain thing, But let's say that he did could Democrats in Congress come back and say Okay, this time, it's over an actual criminal matter, not vague information about a possible law. The congressional Democrats could most definitely do that, Gil but ultimately They got what they wanted that they're gonna have access, but the Supreme Court said, we're going to send it back to the lower court to see if Trump wants to object. For the congressional subpoena on the grounds that it is to block so that stretches out this entire time frame for this particular matter, So ultimately, you know, congressional Democrats are going to get access. But there's going to be a lot of back and forth fighting over the scope of the subpoena. And again. Any results are going to take us into the next year at the earliest. One of the interesting things is to the dissenting judges on Having the president's tax is released is that it would interfere with his presidential duties. I was surprised by that, not because of any political reason. But back in 1997 the Supreme Court unanimously nine Nothing rejected. That very interference argument when Bill Clinton brought it up to try and protect himself against a lawsuit by Paul Jones Well, and that's exactly right. Because basically the Supreme Court with these rulings for the financial records for President Trump is basically saying That no individual even a sitting president of the United States is above the law. If you receive a grand jury, subpoena or congressional subpoena, you have to respond and deal with it like you and I would have been forbidden. We got grand jury subpoenas. Let's move on to one of the other decisions the Supreme Court made this week, and this was upholding a Trump administration regulation that lets employers with religious or moral objections limit women's access to birth control coverage under the Affordable Care Act. The headlines made it sound like, Well, that's it. These women, probably about 126,000 and all have lost this kind of coverage for all time. As with virtually every Supreme Court decision is you and I discussed in the past girl. It's hard to generalize, but when you get in the weeds with this particular decision Upholding the Trump administration regulation that lets employers oft out of birth control coverage. You have to remember With the backdrop this year there has been fierce. I repeat fierce litigation over the so called contraception mandate. Okay, a knish. It'd the Obama administration that required most enforced or by cost re coverage for contraception. And then Top administration came in and shot to limit that, in all candor. It was a Trump victory because he got what he wanted. Now, of course, many religious groups are absolutely elated, saying that no business should be forced to provide drugs and devices that could potentially destroy life. Of course, the flip side of that ISS Women's groups are absolutely furious, interpreting this Supreme Court ruling as as an assault on women's rights, So it is definitely a controversial issue that is not going to go away. They're going to be a future legal fights over this entire topic. Finally, let's talk about the one that seemed to come out of nowhere. Almost The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that a lot of eastern Oklahoma including a major part of Tulsa, Oklahoma, is still a Moscow Key Creek American Indian reservation. A decision that has implications for nearly two million residents, obviously a major victory for tribal rights, too, but What does this mean for citizens of Oklahoma? I want to answer that this way in the midst of a pandemic that we're in. Right now, Many people are not truly grasping the seismic impact. To the criminal justice system. I'm in that system every day and jury trials delayed. Ah, Video zoom court appearances, The world has been turned upside down. This case is just a seismic because basically much of eastern Oklahoma now falls within an Indian reservation, the Supreme Court saying, You know what a deal a contract if people was cut between the tribe And the United States in terms of tribal lands, and now the United States has to abide by its promises..

"You. Take care of your unfinished business by taking out anyone who screwed you over weight and you were alive node. Vivian asked me. She cursing allowed in this. Does that answer your question Sir. Assume it's okay but you never know you never know. I gotta say that looking at this. Your here's to the questions your your. Your design is amazing. with is the animation. And you know I was so curious when I saw this because this is very funny is well ridden. But what's the process behind the whole thing especially in the in the area of animation? How many people are you working with? And how long does it take you to take you to get that done that pilot so hell of a boss is a is a magical story because I was already working on a much. Bigger pilot for a couple of years called has been hotel kind of the the big one and while working on that project. I was developing in a series and I came up with all these characters and stuff and the characters in hell of a boss were characters originally created for that world and I realized that there wasn't really a place for them Their story felt very separate from the story that I was trying to tell has been there more. It's like about 'em switch like are not the same is a lot of that has been characters in how they came about so it it felt more natural to make it its own series so once that was the case. I I developed the core little cast of characters so much smaller much smaller main cast and I am huge fan of Brandon Rogers. And he's a youtube comedian. I I kinda serendipitous. -Ly had been reached out to his network like you to M. C. N. network and I didn't connect with them but did Kinda go. Hey like do you do you have a do you do his information. Like his his wrap Because I have this thing that I think might be interesting to him at least a voice And so I sent over the materials and you now. His Rep responded and he responded and once he was on board. It was incredibly fast. Like I've never met another creator. Who's worked faster than me? Like not even to say that I worked. I typically work fast like I once. Something is rolling. I start on Zion. That start on. The work started everything but in May she takes a lot of time so obviously it's a much longer process but you were with. Brandon has been absolutely amazing wonderful creator. Great talent definitely. The humor came. It was amped up a lot from him a just. He just has a sense of writing in humor. Dialogue that that's so unique and So we wrote the script pretty fast like it was. It was a really fast process. You know we had a few meetings where we got together and talked about what the pilot could be what these characters were had an idea for them but like some of the ideas change based off talking to him and You know like the pilot came together very fast at the script and then the actual pilot itself also came together incredibly fast. They were only in production of it for like four months Maybe five technically but that's also because has been was going on so I had a whole different team of animators kind of perfect timing. Perfect timing just as I was needing a whole new team because they didn't want to take the has been team like filter them into something else. hold a for team applied to me who had experienced and a lot of them. A lot of them were based in Latin America And it was really cool because I was familiar with their work. I was already fans of a few of them. And they all had experienced worth working together as studio Over there and so they just pipeline was incredibly fast. They were throwing things back to me right away and I'm so like well. This is my gosh like where we're getting things done really just all the time. Line filling up with animation and I was just like wow. This is almost done almost done like when has been was almost like it was it was really fast and Jack up the door for me on how many you know kind of on a different timeframe of like how we could get these out Because it was a long time it was ten minutes and As soon as that door opened I I've been trying to learn and and we're challenging ourselves as a team on the projects were making now and the goal is to make a season of boss independently so we actually have seven episodes right. Now that are fully written and four of them reported So so there's more coming I can say that I guess that's a reveal that have been meaning to have online channel as well but like we are working on more on in the process going pretty fast but right now the team is roughly. It fluctuates because a lot of people are part time so so some people will come in and do a few shots and then leave or you know or work on another project and then come back later when they need more Work or or if they had more time But my core team I have kind of like ten animators. That are my go to And I'm trying to keep it around there And then like here and there a few side animators to do a few shots But I adore my core team. I think I've found an amazing group of people through working on both projects and You know I'm I'm expanding into working with designers and working with a you know. The background team is also phenomenal. Like I'm looking at the clip. I'm like Remembering who did what on. And it's just. I think we're really like finding ourselves as like this. Indie studio on like the team is more used to my style. Now and the timing in you know since we're able to rightly scripts like the most exciting thing for me about Helluva boss. These next couple episodes that Brandon wrote on our now that we got the pilot out of the way we can really get into the character so over these seven episodes there is like development there is like an arc but it's also very free because it can be its own kind of adventure on John Nra almost because they can do characters can travel around earth like anywhere they want so those nice. How many people did you say you have in your team again? Like Courtney core team about ten animators right now. The background team is huge. Because we're trying to To battle the quarantine kind of delay of animation. 'cause we haven't been able to record the voices yet we're doing scratch for the for the audio and redoing the background so we're trying to do like all the background for the first. Two episodes can simultaneously with an aim to be team so each team background artists is also about ten people. So it's a lot of background folks for this time because there's a lot of to do and it's probably the most time. Consuming part is animation so We're doing that and then I do mean composite and then Another friend of mine Like my core composite alongside me Whilst we got we got we got so many people. There's like five or six a character designers this time around doing various designs when I'm not doing them on and clean up artists. We have a time to so. I think there's maybe like fifteen or so clean up artist kind of guest demanding I would have to go back into the server in count everybody. But that's kind of roughly. How many people we have right now. So it's taken the server rehab like a solid like forty fifty or so people think again. I'd have to look to be sure. I'm notoriously bad at numbers but the The core team is pretty big for has been it was bigger so I'm trying to keep it a little bit lower just so that I can really to know everybody. Everyone can really feel like they're gonNA stay on so yeah no nice very nice you know I. This is. This is great. This is a great interview. I feel bad because I felt like I interrupted you little while because you took a pause and I thought like. Let me get this question. 'cause no believe me. I love when people talk man. This is fascinating just to sit back and just this is what I wanna hear. I have a lot of questions and you answered about ten of them or so. I'm a I'm a talker stealthily. How I take after my dad I going. I'm Jay anyways not to interrupt. Evil like he does. That's like a big data. As he's he's very very loud Salvadorian managed just always like targeting and life. Take after him big time. No that is going on. You can totally interrupt me. No not interrupt. You Bet if I tried interrupted I got ran right. The fuck I was like how many animators are no. No no no. Please please give your answers out there. This is this is great. I am I feel like this is not even an interview like I'm in a very very educational lecture right now. It which is which is the ultimate compliment. My my other mother question is so this is this is an independent production from Ron. Correct me. But I'M GONNA get this question. They hit because you can start talking. Get it great. No is great is great. I just want to ask so. I'm assuming it's an independent production so you just talked about how many people you have working on. This is a large team of people for you. Know an independent production which is again. That's that's amazing. And congratulations on that. But how is this house? Budgeted houses paid for house funding. Yeah good question We so with has been started off. I had a I had a small audience a dedicated audience and I was doing our. I was doing animation For Fun and I had patriotic So I still do the same Patriot on So the primary source was patriotic. A patriotic A saved up for a couple years and then when I graduated. I had some freelance jobs. They weren't paying great but you know it was something squirrel away and then I had the money that already saved like from school and from commission work and You know the gifts you get when you graduate just all money just all everything to my name and I put everything to my name into has been hotel when I started has been Initial budget but it wasn't a big one on it was enough to pay. You know the early team but what was Nice? About Patriarch is always a couple thousand coming in every month on and it didn't have to pay rent at the time so it was. It was a nice. Like an ongoing. I felt like I could still pay everybody something a month and my rate was lower. But it wasn't it was. It was like my early freelance rate. So I felt like if I was getting what I wanted to get. That was kind of how I was like all right and if people said no they said no like you know. They're like this isn't enough so that was kind of my attitude early on still my attitude now but now. I'm able to pay like more small studio rates. Actually which is really exciting. And that is thanks to the sales that we have so every season or so like every like fall winter summer we try to do a sale.

"You hear what the coaches are saying. You hear what the players are saying back and forth. It's just a special environment that you're not used to and it it takes everything up a notch, even if the fights not great. It's just the way it goes down. Being able to hear all that stuff, hearing all the thuds and everything. And then hearing, I think everybody's allowed to bring four people for family members, whatever, and you hear them screaming for their person and then and then they have to hear the other guys, four people and they're right next to each other. You know, key Medrano little league soccer baseball. You feel like one day there's going to be a brawl in the stand because everybody's just so loud. So I kind of related to just picture if you're a Laker fan, if you were to walk into their facility on watch one of their practices, it's kind of has that feel. Perfectly described. It has the feel of you're seeing the team. You're seeing guys that are trying out maybe to be on the team that last spot or something like that. And then you're seeing like a Byron, Scott, no Magic Johnson kind of floating around. And I guess Jeanie Buss she's the owner that's Dana white and maybe you know, some of her shot callers, the general manager Palinka. I think his name is so that and then all the fans were all kind of just courtside. Nobody's up in the rafters. Everyone's just kinda courtside. So you're, you are hearing the coaches, yell instructions to the players. And you know, again, there's there is a prize, someone will make the team. So yeah, that's a good comparison goes, it's it's really, it's really, really cool. And like I say, manifesto went made it now get this, Chris, Curtis will a lot of people thought if they were going to award the second contract and it wasn't going to be hardy. It would have been him or if they were ever going to do the first week where they do three. It could have been Curtis, hardy and manifield. He immediately retired. He broke. Apparently he was at a broken hand, Dan, you read it, you read it off. It was an injury where he had to go to the hospital and he's going to get surgery. But he feels like it's a wrap, gay broke his hand in the first round. And that's winning because he, he looked good enough where he could either be invited back or I don't know. What were you gonna say. I was gonna say, it's what just makes them even more impressive when you look at his performance. I mean he was a guy that if us on Twitter hours tweet and should have, you know, he had my vote for the contract. Let's just say that and that was before knowing he had a broken hand, which actually makes sense because the only criticism you really could have said was huge, showing some savvy, boxing in rounds one and two..
