"Of it or want to share it feel free to share as Santa Fe dot com I am Richard heat your house today our guest Jamie Clements president CEO of the museum of New Mexico foundation and more Addison from the museum of international folk art the curator of European and north American collection talking about the Alexander Gerard collection at the museum all right what an amazing amazing story about he and his wife in the family and their entire collection and creating these in his own little countries in worlds and and all of that really amazing story so what's the plan what what do we need to do what are you what are you planning to do what we're doing a lot related to Gerard programming right now we have a symposium coming up in on October eighteenth and nineteenth we're we're gonna have ten speakers for two days talking about your art and then this is at the museum this is at the museum okay and we're also engaged as sort of an out on an ongoing basis we always have to address cleaning and restoring the wing and so we're in one of these moments after thirty seven years where were doing it one of the big push to do a lot of work in the way so beginning in January it's a probably three to five year project beginning in January which is an initial phase where we this past January past January it took us three months and we worked on a dozen of the sets in the chart wing which involved taking all the plexi down and that's big plexi remove tagging and removing every single object photographing every single object so could go into our database as a digital image so it's a big picture the overall picture first of all to get the entire scene correct right right right yeah which of the individual yeah and because when we didn't there was no digital photography in nineteen eighty two when he installed it good point and we don't have any photographs of each object because he took the money put the men in the sense of and the the boxes they were all in beer boxes these beer boxes they have they the folded into the center and right and what were the bottles were the bottles were right that's how they got transported us they completely filled our auditorium floor to ceiling so he was a heavy drinker and if you and so it's it's a big undertaking photograph everything fixed anything need to be fixed put everything back but you didn't get it all done on the track no I mean it's it's so big it's in there and there's so many tiny figures okay so I want to say that in the Mexican village of a cut lawn there were some five hundred fifty objects I think alone okay and what you don't want to do this in the middle of the summer time you know we didn't we didn't do it in the summertime but we did it if people were still coming in we'll cordon off ones one section and people were kind of delighted to come in and see the work in progress it's quite a sight to walk in and see a human being crawling up the these these big cases right to to reach the cathedral at the top of the village to to clean it has shown itself it was yes of people enjoy that okay people love seeing behind the so this is on going so we're we're at a pause a moment of pause now but we're gonna start up again soon I think that takes money all of it takes money the other ideas to do a a complete complete catalog complete book on the entire on him family the history the life and the collection so what we're working on with our contribution to the charts scholarship it's going to be in addition to a couple books that have been previously published is we're going to do an anthology heavily illustrated anthology that looks at Girard as designer and Gerard as folk art collector and how he represented culture so we're bringing together the two different facets of their art in one book it's going to be collected writings and interviews his own words sometimes interviews with people who knew him family members so kind of a of a more of a personal assets perspective sometimes of of all these writings some of which have already been published and some of which were going to commission okay from like a fantastic project probably won't be able to take a trip to Germany anytime soon you're gonna be stuck in the oven I'm a museum out with me great great place to be stuck he belongs we can have our meetings at the company that is a big you got it all right there already conspiring all right so Jamie well let me one quick question on house attendance has the summer been going well apparently attendance is up seventeen percent in may great okay I haven't heard about junior okay so Jimmy I mean all of this is is part of your job you have you have to know the collection of know the history you have to know what the tenants is what the needs are past present and the future right of all of these right and so we did our job properly exactly so so I go to Laura and I go to her director Christiane when we talk about the opportunities that are ahead and so we put a dollar figure to what all of this is going to cost and for plan a plan B. plan C. they there is one plan okay that's what they expect the right what we try to deliver always makes holiday but so the traveling exhibit the publication and the refurbishing of the weighing altogether comes to about a million dollars and so we committed to a campaign to raise that amount of money we started about a year ago we are over halfway which is good news our hope is to complete the campaign you as a friend of mine is these things kind of things that we actually have some really fun naming opportunities so anywhere from naming country or culture or a train plane bead blanket or more and it's very in dollar amounts to have your name associated with these objects the village in the exhibit that you get that that has a little bit of a higher price tag though story wanted to name a villages story Coleman village what with that talk right with that what will that that possibly led her back that may be about a hundred thousand dollars we'll talk well there goes all the way down to twenty five hundred and then south okay so we've got a great range and of course there is no signage allowed in the exhibit itself so even the main planks anything like right right and that was really we want to preserve charge vision Alexander I was very specific you wanted no labels and the wing which is why we have a gallery guy that you can walk around with there's no labels there because that would distract from the design visual experience so we'll have a recognition plaque outside the exhibit okay it will have people that's going on right now going on right now people want to find out more they go to your website museum foundation dot org absolutely they can find out more about that right can you give us an update on the bottom I'd let you know when I was going to ask you earlier maybe what what is the largest donation the meat foundation is every seed I mean the Latins they they donated four million dollars and just to give you a sense of their generosity they've added a little bit to that okay so but their initial four million dollar gift was the largest in our history and that was going towards an overall and down men of war overall fund of this girl really was to find that transformation of the old state archives building right into the violin contemporary right and that will be contemporary art and next to the New Mexico museum of art which opened in nineteen seventy total budget for that will be probably sixteen point five million as a fund raising so it's going well we are our goal was twelve point five were expected we needed a four million from the state the state in the last session allocated for million in capital outlay done there we may ask for a little more just to be safe in the next session word eleven and a half million toward the twelve five so we are just a million short all right you want to comment on the slight controversy rounded the design yep so right now we're going through design review with both the city of Santa Fe and the state historic preservation office it's going to be about a sixty day process that we're hoping will and early fall and so everyone understands that the project has been designed to there can't be any major changes to design but we have course one accommodate the city we won accommodate the state so we'll negotiate if necessary some changes that makes sense for that can tell Jordan was the final death deposit death position deposition of the of the murals going to be a lot we don't know where but I will tell you were if you were in conversation with the artists go about degrees mon okay who who wants to paint he he's I think it is late eighties early nineties wonderful gentleman so we're working with him to find a project that we can support and actually monies were allocated in the last session for him to recreate something around the museum and tastic once again the foundation website is museum foundation dot org and if I can add we are now selling breaks for two hundred and fifty dollars.
