Re-Thinking Church Missions

"All through the history of the Church of Christ. There has been a ceaseless struggle to maintain the truth that is a quote from Alan McRae Twentieth Century Presbyterian Churchmen and Biblical scholar. He learned that quote firsthand. He was with J Gresham Machen as a student at Princeton Seminary in the late nineteen twenty s and when Mason left Princeton in one across the Delaware River over to Philadelphia to found Westminster Theological Seminary. Mcrae went along with them and a few years later in one thousand nine thirty six when Mason. Who was ousted from the Presbyterian church U S and he formed a new church the Orthodox Presbyterian church well McRae went along with him again. So what was the issue in the Nineteen Thirties and specifically in nineteen thirty six mccray is about this ceaseless struggle to maintain the truth. Will broadly speaking. The issue was liberalism and cultural progressivism This had been at work in the Presbyterian Church USA and many other denominations as well at the time from the eighteen nineties on through the roaring twenties. Mason battled it at Princeton and he was battling it. Within the denomination narrowly. Speaking the issue was missions in nineteen thirty to the fall of nineteen thirty two. A report was issued entitled Rethinking Missions. This report was then published fully in nineteen thirty three no fewer than seven volumes published by Harper again under the title rethinking missions. This project was all funded by John. D Rockefeller it had representatives from seven key positions on mission boards. In seven denominations participated. This document had two major parts. One was based on a fact finding mission and just spoke of the state of missions and the conditions of places three places in particular China and India. Japan were studied the second part raised new ways. That mission should be done and challenge the old ways that missions was being done in a nutshell. What this document wanted to promote was to advance spiritual idealism social brotherhood Economic Welfare and Cultural Unity. The rethinking part means that to think of missions as simply the Great Commission the Proclamation of the Gospel to every tribe to every nation that is too narrow and in fact has been wrong headed we need a different mission. Different approach that represents the realities of the twentieth century so missions needs to be rethought well. This deeply troubled J. Gresham mation. He saw in this and denial of the Gospel and he couldn't believe that not only did his own mission board of the Presbyterian Church U s not only did it not refute this document but it had key representatives. Who are part of it and were promoting it. This was also the time of the missionary. Pearl Buck in nineteen thirty two. She had just won the Pulitzer Prize. She was a very significant figure in American culture and she was a Presbyterian missionary. Who denied the Atonement of Christ the Deity of Christ the authority of Scripture and all of this just perplexed Mason and so he challenged his denomination. He wrote a one hundred and ten page pamphlet to go along with an overture that he introduced in his presbytery and he wanted the Presbyterian Church to refute this document. They didn't and so. In one thousand nine hundred thirty three he formed the independent board of Presbyterian foreign missions that eventually led to his ouster from his denomination and so in Nineteen ninety-six once he was defrocked he just formed a new denomination the Orthodox Presbyterian church six months later January one nineteen thirty seven. Mason died but his commitment to the church and his commitment to the Gospel was evident there in that action of standing against the tide of his denomination and standing for the Gospel. He did not want to rethink missions but rather in the twentieth century he wanted to reaffirm the mission of the Church and the Great Commission. Well that was mentioned in one thousand nine hundred eighty three. And I'm Steve Nichols and thanks for joining us. For Five minutes purchased

Transgender people in U.S. still face conversion therapy attempts

"Us for the this show is mcrae game. He's founder of hope for wholeness. It was it is a leading conversion therapy program in the country this week he publicly announced he's gay and renounced all aspects of conversion therapy also with us from toronto. Now is matt ashcroft. He attended his first conversion therapy program in two thousand fourteen at the age of twenty four with the hope of repairing his relationship with his father. He's currently inactive seeking a ban on conversion therapy centers from across across canada matt. Welcome to on point. Thank you samat that. Tell us where you were <hes> emotionally and mentally at the point at which you decided to enter this. Why did you feel it was necessary to do so. And what were you seeking to accomplish so being in a caribbean family <hes> or at least grow growing up in a caribbean family. Being gay is not really a thing balls but specifically jamaican. I didn't really have a good relationship with my dad and i thought that that through the worm hole of the internet that this is the only way that i can re- rebuild or payroll relationship with my dad matt to be clear like you were identifying his gaelic. You knew that you wanted to date. Young men like this is kind of where you were or like. How would you have identified yourself. At that time i would've done defy it as me just going through a lot of shame and just being at a dark place i also did turn to religion <hes> quite a legia agia at eighteen and i also had a lot of shame from religion with <hes> homophobia and homophobic all homophobic preaching so and so you say you go you go online like you go into the interwebs and you're like i am going to find something. That's gonna help me out and this just pops up a you. <hes> it was it wasn't it wasn't that easy of a process. It was more it was more so like talking to people <unk> getting super involved with mike christian faith at the time and just just ultimately just going into fundamental fundamental fundamental. Isn't that didn't <hes> that doesn't work for me. Now i wanna play a couple of clips to give listeners an understanding of what's under girding some of the thinking here the elite joseph nicolosi created what became known as repair to therapy conversion therapy <hes> and he introduced many of the foundational concepts adopted widely by <hes> these these kinds of organizations across the country here nicolosi was in an interview with vice from two thousand fifteen. Everyone's heterosexual the idea that <hes> some people are naturally homosexual. Naturally gay is just a a social construct so when you have an individual who has same sex attraction we see it as something went wrong developmentally and we try to resolve the issue and put them back on the path toward their natural heterosexuality nicolosi nicolosi maintained that childhood trauma possibly exacerbated by domineering mother detached father might lead to homosexuality <hes>. I wanna say that you know the american medical association the american psychiatric association of both sort of thorough statements <hes> essentially disavowing or denouncing the idea of any scientific fecta liquidity of being attached to what they you know the american psychiatric association called psychotherapeutic modalities it said <hes> any such anecdotal reports. It's of cures are counterbalanced by anecdotal claims of psychological harm. I wanna play the clip of <hes> involving the trimmer family. <hes> adam trimmer grew up outside. I richmond virginia struggling to keep a secret from his deeply religious southern baptist parents when he decided to come out to his mother paulette. It didn't go well. <hes> paulette trimmer related this to earn moriarty for c._b._s. Sunday morning last november. I wanted him to know that it's in the bible and you're going against god. Did you hug him at that moment again and i remember hearing him. Tell somebody when i went to a mom and instead of getting love and support. I got religion

"Today, I want to turn my attention back to health tech. Current health recently announced that he's a powered remote patient monitoring wearable device. Receive class to clearance from the US food and Drug administration, the FDA for hospital care, and this current wireless device provides continuous ICU level patient monitoring, which essentially enables clinicians to better determine the hell trajectory and intervene early an ultimate -ly improve patient outcomes and current health. Ceo, Christopher mcken has been on the podcast before. But I invite him back on again today. So we can discuss the advancements being made in healthcare an IOT and out together, the helping improve patient care so book up and hold on tight as I beam your ears all the way to Edinburgh in Scotland. So we can speak with Christopher mcken CEO at current health. So massive warm. Welcome back to the show. Chris can you tell snooze? Labat who you are. And what you do. Yeah. Hi, Neal delighted to be buying. I'm trust me cannon. I'm the CEO and cool friend or of current health. And I think the last thing we would on your show we were knowing not forty but we've saying helpfully changed name though to not cut it. We health tech company based in Edinburgh and New York, raise the eleven million dollars and employees currently people although were were growing rapidly at the moment. Now, we last spoke on I think it was episode six hundred sixty seven where he revealed your ally powered patient monitor solution and just went on it Mr. episode, can you give them a quick overview of what current health is. Maybe the story behind your rebranding and the problems that you set out to solve a cool. And so my my win by in the computer science and then medicine, and I started the company with my cool brendor actually is a major who shouldn't. And the the problem are our meshing that we had was really simple. We just wanted to help help them to identify patients the at risk of getting that on Ilia point. And Ray, no, the don't really have a way of minting visibility of patient hell on those signing when that patient is stopping to deteriorate on and getting to go and see that patient Elliot here that is both an exact. So we do is winnable on the upper arm of the patient. We monitor them across a whole bunch of ideological matrix where and super high accuracy, so things like oceans accusation and responded to rate, and we integrate with a bunch of other devices are in the body from things like Spiro McRae or wait. And then we take all of that information and use it under signed as a patient health trajectory, and can we LA are a health care professional much much jelly appoint than currently possible. So they can intervene L E R, and we rebranded because our or existing name Billick. It didn't really really set with what we were trying to achieve then really mean anything until I actually am. We just happen to the dot com. The name and went with it. So we decided that we would we would try and fight the name that was more fighting for the mesh that we were trying to achieve and we went with Conan hill. I playoffs a fantastic move as well. The difference between snap Fulton and current health. You just know exactly what it is straight away. Yeah. We we think we feel much happier with it. And since we last spoke you recently, an absent your AI, powered remote patient monitoring wells device receive class to clearance from the US food and Drug administration the FDA old for hospital offer hospital care. I mean, that's an incredibly big deal for you. You guys he told me a little bit more about what that means for you at current house. Yeah. I mean, it was an amazing. My also in forest is the culmination of 'em yields of walk on the part of our team, and we're one of a very very small number of and devices anywhere in the world. Weser vacation, and it gives us actor the US market, but it's also an enormous validation point from and one of the world's most most diligent regulate does it was a huge amount of work and photos together, and it was a huge sum Hove stamp of approval for his when we actually go to 'em celebration for the team and all the work that the. It feels like a huge step in the right direction. But how did you see the advancements in healthcare, and I oversee and how to get how do you think that can all actually improve patient care and move to more than like a proactive approach to healthcare all the traditional reactive? Yeah. Well, I think if you will through waned one hundred years the disease that we saw for indict from where different than the RTD and infant mentality was higher and hundred years ago and life expectancy was lore, and we tended to die quick are from shore or Talamo Lucy's whereas today, thanks to the incredible environments and science and medicine, we can all live longer disease that would have been a death sentence one hundred years ago, or no, long-term lovable and chronic. And that's great. But the flip side of that is or health systems are no facing real strain from an older population who have disease that require and more frequent contact on long management. North Carolina Republican operative charged in election fraud scheme

"Charges in the last of the unresolved midterms and North Carolina congressional race. Where a new election has already been ordered by a state board political operative and convicted felon, Leslie McRae. Dallas was arrested Wednesday morning and indicted on three felony counts for election fraud that up ended North Carolina's congressional district. Nine race Dallas is accused of tampering with male and absentee ballots to favor. Republican candidate Mark Harris Harris was ahead of democrat, Dan McCreevy by nine hundred and five votes, but the state did not certify the outcome because of suspicions of election fraud Harris had denied knowing about Dallas's shady past before hiring him. New Election Ordered in North Carolina Race at Center of Fraud Inquiry

"According to MBC news. This is the first time in US history that anew election has been called for a federal office because of election fraud that with Jimmy Williams and joining us Judd leg author and founder of popular dot info. And judd. This is pretty extraordinary because Mark Harris was defending himself all the way to the end. Their point appointed, which it wasn't clear even knew McRae. Dallas the person who perpetrated these frauds, and then his son got up on the stand. It all change. What happens now is he likely to run what happens, and is there going to be any remedy against him for this frog? I think he's very unlikely to run. And here's why there were his sons testimony you played a clip. It was extremely compelling and dramatic, and essentially he breaks down the idea that Harris had been talking about since the election that he didn't know anything about Dallas. Or the fact that Dallas was involved in legal activities because I was warning him not just for weeks. But for years that Dallas was trouble. But the real problem, and the reason why I think he may not run again is that he was also exposed the fact that he did not turn over to the investigators the emails that establish these conversations with his sons, and then was lying on the state under cross examination from the lawyer representing the democratic candidate, Dan McCreevy that he had told his younger son that he didn't expect those emails to come up, so sort of know ille- withholding information from the investigators. So I think the combination. Of all that it just looks too bad for him. I don't think Harris will run, although he hasn't indicated definitively their way.

North Carolina Republican's son says warned father about operative's past

"North Carolina State board of elections. Just finished a three of a public hearing that it's trying to get to the bottom of what happened in the states ninth congressional district last year the outcome of that race still hasn't been called state. Election officials accuse a political operative named McRae. Dallas of running an illegal scheme to collect absentee ballots. He was working for the Republican candidate Mark Harris in what was very tight race NPR's miles parks has been at all three days of this hearing, and he joins us now. Hi miles. So understand today's session revealed tensions within Harris's family over the decision to hire. Dallas. What happened? Yeah. We heard some pretty compelling testimony from Harris's son, John Harris, who's actually an assistant US attorney in North Carolina. He testified that he had looked at previous election results from two thousand sixteen and noticed a disturbing pattern of results based on somebody who is hiring this political operative this McRae. Dallas basically he saw public records. That indicated ballots were being returned for this candidate in batches leading him to. Believe that somebody in bladen county where this investigation is centered somebody there was collecting ballots, which is a legal. So then his father in two thousand seventeen comes in and says he's thinking about hiring McRae, Dallas. And he really has an issue with that investigators show an Email where he even forwarded the North Carolina statute that said collecting ballots is a legal North Carolina to his father. What have we learned about this scheme that investigators say Dallas was running? So for the past three days. Former employees of Dallas described how they collected ballots and one employee even said she filled in multiple ballots down ballot races, which is a legal North Carolina. Again, it's illegal even just to collect ballots, North Carolina. They also described how they were instructed different ways to make sure that state and local officials. I didn't get any red flags about the operation, and the consultant who paid Dallas his name's Andy Yates, he said a number of times that he didn't have any warning signs about Dallas. That's even though the state investigated, Dallas and. Thousand sixteen and there were a number of. News reports about that investigation. Harris said that he knew of no illegal activity on behalf of his campaign. So what does today's testimony mean in light of that? Well, he can't really say anymore that he was not warned. Here's how his son John Harris put it I raised red flags at the time. The decision was made to hires Dallas. That's what I did. But he also says he thinks McRae. Dallas lied to his father about what he was doing to get out the votes. Andy Yates, testified that doubts that he was only registering people that he wasn't collecting ballots. John Harris says that he thinks his parents believe McRae Dallas, and he did not. He says also added at the end of his testimony that his father did things in his campaign differently than he would have these hearings were initially scheduled to just last two days. This was three that just wrapped up in. It seems like there's more left to uncover. How long do you think this is gonna last and how long before voters in the ninth district has a member of congress to represent them? So at this point if definitely looks that this could like this could last the the rest of the week if not longer we still haven't heard from Mark Harris, he's set to testify tomorrow morning. And his campaign says he is very ready and eager to do that. If the state board they're going to vote at the end of this hearing, whether or not to hold a new election order certify, Harris, if they decide to hold a new election that process could take months North Carolina ninth district voters in North Carolina's ninth district could be looking at not having representation in the house until late summer early. "For the very first time. We finally have official factual findings in the crazy case of potential election fraud in North Carolina's ninth congressional district. And yet it's a product of a very flawed human system right in an algorithm or code. That's been designed with the flaws baked into it. Absolutely. But people I think have a natural inclination to believe that a computer code result is somehow objective. Yeah. This is so common that it's actually has a term we call it automation bias, and it's just the tendency to be McRae's lists. When a seemingly objective been ear of scientific authority like a computer gives you an answer. I think there's also we need to look at the way our current sort of trust in technical solutions kind of adds to this tendency. I think it's telling that a lot of these systems have been created without documenting the data they used and certainly without releasing this data to the public. There are few to no monitoring regimes that actually look at the impact of these systems, and it's very hard to get records around this. So we can look at the way in which a kind of off. Mation bias is baked into the way. Even the developers are thinking about these systems. You know, traditionally if you went through a criminal Justice case, and and you went to sentencing were bail hearing, you would have real humans testifying against you know, you're suggesting that some of those decisions are being replaced by algorithms that the people administering them barely understand. So can you explain to me what happens in a courtroom, if somebody says, well, hey, this algorithm is junk because you fit in racially biased arrested ticks, and so it spit out that I'm likely to be dangerous because I'm a black guy, and that's that's flawed or their ways for people to make that argument to challenge the underlying code in these algorithms in the same way that you would say traditionally get to confront a human witness against you at this point, not many. And this is something we're working on with AI. Now, we have developed a policy framework called the impact assessment framework that..

"In Flanders fields the poppies blow between the crosses bro on row. Those are the first lines of a poem written by Lifton Colonel John McCrea, a Canadian medic who served with the first brigade of the Canadian field artillery on the western front in the first World War, and who died of pneumonia in France, not long after hostilities ceased after the second battle of IPE in April, and may of nineteen fifteen McRae noticed that the first life to push through the devastated landscape and muddy improvised, cemeteries were scarlet poppies. The flower has since become across the Commonwealth a symbol of remembrance in modern Britain. However, the poppy has become a symbol of something else. A designation of which side you are on in one of the twenty first centuries, deeply tedious culture wars until really quite recently. The Royal British legions annual poppy appeal worked like this sometime in early November you approach to current or former soldier in a train station dropped some change into their bucket. Perhaps parted with a few awkward were. Words in appreciation of this and walked away with a red paper flower into your coat, which you wore until remembrance day, November eleventh or more usually until it fell off sometime beforehand. Money was raised for a fine. 'cause and a gesture of gratitude and solidarity was made it was a humble and dignified ritual. It is now a circus outside novelty poppies appear on the fronts of taxis and tube trains, and with increasing frequency in the lapels of politicians apparently feared that sporting anything list. Ostentatious would be sacrilege the mesmerizing Twitter account of giant puppy watch has this year spotted such monstrosities as poppy face paint, poppy themed pizzas and a poppy. Replacing the kickoff spot on at least one football ground. This has been made worse as has absolutely everything by the toxic combination of tabloid and social media Hughes and cries are raised should some of the public figure fail to sport a poppy last year temple veins, throbbed purple when England cricketer Moeen Ali, not insignificantly to the nine ruckus that ensued. Embiid Muslim will spotted poppy free in eighteen photo by the time Ali explained that his poppy had fallen off. And he just hadn't noticed the horse of confected outrage had long since skate the stable door of truth. It is possibly if I a cly instructive that some of the most interesting reflections on the puppy have come from the few footballers who prefer not to wear. What is now default addition to their kit at this increasingly tiresome time of year stoke city's James McLean is uncomfortable with the poppy ju to his upbringing in Derry Northern Ireland with the British army is not regarded with unequivocal admirations, Manchester United's pneumonia matych has decided he cannot separate the poppy from his memories of his own country Serbia being bombed by Britain among other nations in one thousand nine hundred nine. The annual poppy row like all such four or against Bally Hoos both works and infuriates by refusing to admit ambiguity, this correspondent who is a poppy wear for what that may be worth is personally aware of actual current or former military personnel who prefer not to wear one. And if people who donate generously to the appeal, but believe advertising the fact to be gauche people contain multitudes political discourse. In this cursed age seeks to cleave everything into binary oppositions. This will absolutely not be the last word on the subject, but it should be. It is if you like your cut out and keep poppy route adjudication to be referred to every year when the interim between Halloween and Christmas is consumed by this fact, she was ruckus if the struggles and sacrifices of those who lie in Flanders fields and elsewhere were for any one thing it is surely that you may wear a particular symbol or not wear one for whatever. "Now he's rankled Yeah Don. Rickles Everybody yeah that was his. Whole thing Right to your face even Frank. Sinatra you. Defend year in. The mafia man. Break don't, shoot me don't shoot me. I. Mean, you can't do that anymore Amazon's, also down net flicks disappointing earnings. So all. The tech companies. Tech companies are. Dropping right, now so they'll blame Trump They're gonna, try to, blame the trade wars talking about the trade. Wars the European announcement yesterday was. Favorable to the stock market. Yesterday you know the. Question is the. European markets are Nope and Trump's fighting a European. Markets they're going wait a minute you can't fight Europe they're our allies no Europe's been fighting America for longtime on trade I know this because I was on a board of, directors of a manufacturing company while I was mayor after I was mayor. Actually and we, couldn't get into. The European markets they just wouldn't let it was a. Waste. Of time going to. Europe they went sorry you're from America the, only, people. We work with our other European countries really it's, been, it's been. It's been that way. For decades in Germany, France Italy you, cannot penetrate their markets, and Trump is going. No that's wrong and CNN and wolf. And everyone else goes oh my gosh look at the damage. The soybeans and everything Well there. Is going to be, short-term damage but farm It's not America who started the trade wars Europe's been in a war. With America, in addition to China for a long, time in. Fact there's theories right now according to money McRae money one reason. Trump, is cozying up to Russia is because, of China To have an alternative to Russia's lot oil to our pipe in that into Germany which Germany a Markle in. Germany he, goes all we only use windmills and, solar power. No they use nuclear power from France and now oil from Russia I'm never forget when, mayor Roberts went to Germany k back look at all the solar power Germany has we ought to follow their lead what she forgot to tell you was they, use a nuclear power from France. And now they're popping in oil from Russia the same. Country, that they're growing NATO to prove to defend them from Russia What happens when we get into conflict with Russia military conflict and Russia cuts the oil off, to Germany we're in trouble and. Trump had the courage. To actually say. That but you're not allowed to, say the, truth at times to the lead the State. Department elite and it's all about. Money I don't blame miracle for bringing in oil because their prices of oil, and gas and their dependence on the Middle, East is very high and they gotta look for alternatives Russia needs the money Just like McDonald's, does business in Russia KFC does business in Russia. Pepsi Cola is the chairman of Patsy cola is best friends with Putin do you ever see CNN question that no you know why because, Pepsi Cola does advertisements on CNN. Putin Pepsi and CNN You know I've been saying. This for weeks CNN FOX and and MSNBC never question corporate America doing. Business in Russia but they question Trump? Doing, business in Russia? As though he's committing some sort of tyranny, trees him even McDonald's is allowed to do visit they're the largest McDonald's is in Russia I don't think I knew. That this is a career money. Ought to listen. To a more often Both here most of the time You're, prepping for your six. O'clock hey another quick money issue the NFL some say this whole issue with not standing for the anthem has hurt viewership will Jerry Jones said this yesterday about his policy, is you stand at the anthem toll toe on the line. Has Jerry Jones is. In Texas it's a red state you. Stand up for the national anthem remember the Alamo That wasn't in Dallas. Right down the street. So you don't mess with the American. Flag in Texas Not until they get more illegal immigrants which will change the voting patterns but this will certainly set up controversy in the NFL, because the NFL has been sort. Of backpedaling on the players who are. More, liberal and African American. And they're concerned about police brutality they're the ones kneeling and Jerry's going sorry your reporting to me and. If you don't go work for the Canadian Football League See how will. Your, salary is there we. All have choices we all have choices but talking about money This, is personal. For. Me right now this is not political for me I saw, the hurricane firsthand, in principle North. Carolina Yup and. Lumberton North, Carolina in towns. Up and down three rivers the Lombi river the tar river you name it I mean towns were destroyed. Not one penny of federal money has been spent. In these small towns to help people lost their homes not one. Penny and the federal government. Has Senate the federal government has, Senate the, media silent except for WBZ TV, I gotta give him credit I've? Been critical of them lately but they they're the only statewide media's going why isn't the governor spending money and now the Fayetteville observer is come out, and go two years later victims still haven't got the, money that I helped get before I left office and I've heard rumors that maybe the rumors are. Well we got election coming up and Cooper doesn't want to spend the money where you have Republican representatives, I, hope that's not true with these? Are the poorest of. The poor that were, hurt by this hurricane Primarily minorities I I love I mean these are so resilient the the people the individuals the families. "Thursday night football eight again that however you want a slice it was a sloppy effort and you know we went into this kind of expec thing but listen on the bear side of the ball you at four turnovers in the game on the packers side of the ball you continue to be one of the worst injured teams in football coming into the game already down i think you're top five tackles with the roster with jordan mcrae getting the start at right tack before you last night having a bit of a tough go you lose time montgomerie early in the game with injuries labelled the chest injury but basically we find out it's a rib injury to a guy was already you're wide receiver turned running back would actually started to become a pretty good option at running back at now we know is going to deal with an injury that at running back probably not one that you're going to get any time soon we always think about this with hamstrings but you're not really built to take the ribcage pounding at that spot the way you might be able to hide a mask in other places so you've got that you've got the brutal hit i've davante adams that will get to coming up in a little bit but that's probably going to leave him side live for a little bit if the ramifications look anywhere near as severe as what we saw and then what's it all of this is to serve as sort of a masking agent to what is really going to be the crux coming off last night and what's going to be the most talked about thing from this game going forward five restrict talk brought to you by straight talk wireless best falls best networks no contracts and we had vina kinds.
