"It's not that bad of a funny story about our really. What i was in high school worked at the same call. This bag of two day old bagels. And and i put it in. My car is very messy when i was in high school and i put the two day old bag of like huge bag of bagels in the back seat of my car and i was driving around for. I would say a good two and a half three months and at one point. I was driving my friend who didn't have his driver's license yet. Who's now a physics professor at a very well respected university. Yeah and. I was very smart person and i say who it is. No he knows his and he was in the backseat of my car. And i remember driving. And i glanced up at the rear view mirror and he was eating something. And we're on our way to get food and i was like. What are you eating. Really about to go with diner. And he said i can wait. I'm so hungry. I said well. What are you eating bagels here. And i looked over and i saw that he had dipped into this old bag bagels and i was like power hitting that. He's like a pretty good little stale. I guess my friend is proof that you can. You can eat a three month old big well there. You go doesn't that then. Do you wanna change your answer to this. Really great question. That jets number three. Would you rather kiss a king cobra snake every night before. Sleep or have a tarantula for a bed mate. Tarantula it'd be less dangerous kissing king cobra you die you kill you well. I'm assuming that in both scenarios you're not going to die. It's just the fear of it right like it's just the aren't you would. It's doing it. I think it's doing rather kiss a king cobra every night before sleep. Which on the face. But then let's assume that you're not gonna die from either scenarios just which one would be scared to you. Well if if there's an assumption that you're not gonna die than than that eliminates a lot of fear like well. no you still get. They can still bite you. I i don't think i'd be able to fall asleep knowing that. There's a torrential in the bed. Yeah i would say if they're equal let's say for argument's sake they're equally. Dangerous really takes the least dangerous one right. Let's say there aren't that dangerous because they don't really know. But i'm saying for the sake of the hypothetical and it's just the act of doing this thing. Let's say they're equally dangerous. Okay in that case i would. I would rather kissed the snake away. And i'm awake. Yeah and they're more control over it. Whereas when i'm sleeping god knows where that translate and you can maybe get good enough. Like some of the snake charmers at Holding their mouth. Shut or something. I don't know like you could She's i be so afraid to handle it cobra. I it would have to be if it were not defanged or or You've maybe maybe. I'm not imagining the king cobra deadly now. I know but maybe see. I picture snakes right now. I'm picturing when. But i would have again. I need follow up questions if this were if it were if the venom had been. They've been milked which is cool thing to watch. If you've never seen it. I would pick the snake and if not pick the trash just because it's like one of them's going to kill you and one one okay. Thanks again back to thanks again. I pictured her in those No talking about going to montessori school and she's like. I teach her just like a found a spark in me. And as as she's talking about montessori school i i was thinking i would montessori school to in preschool so far no one saw smart maybe for a sign it was like just blended in is that who's paying drugs. I keep thinking in relation to cat. The i keep picturing her in a painting by That famous winslow homer does. She seem like she she could be in. A winslow homer painting. I don't know. I just that vibe like growing up in missouri and small town. I pictured her playing fields of wheat. Yeah chasing turkeys. Yeah baby that's where it's from. I was surprised when she said she. Then after saying that she was did all these things and and she was so like. You know such a tomboy. I don't know if i use that term anymore for chasing turkeys getting dirty. I don't think you can. And then she said she was. A ballet dancers. Do is in that. Stretch having known some ballet dancers. I know that that is like a fulltime twenty four hour a day commitment. I always feel the need to correct you just to clarify that. You're not saying belly dancer. Ballet she was a two year old belly dancer. Now thankfully when you astor if you prefer dogs or cats she goes. Oh i can i pick both. I like both of them and you go. That is uh really refreshing. Yeah she's also young wrote. Maybe that very youngest guest reminds me a bit. It makes sense that their friends and they get along beanie feldstein. Oh yeah that other makes perfect sense totally. Yeah i can save. Similar kind of lightness and plucky nece. I like asking them both. Like what age if you could pick any age now. Yeah it's like something. I probably haven't been yet. Yeah she's like three years from now he's probably gonna be great. Imagine having a brain like hers and having done the things she's already done being being young. It's like okay. This definitely sounds condescending. But like i'm just so. I'm so excited for her. I'm so like. I'm just jealous. Because i like think he'd be jealous of somebody that you'd like but i'm like i'm a little jealous of her age. Jealous is too ugly of a working ugly. It's also hard to be jealous when you're forty two year old man. I know you are trying to be jealous of a like a twenty four year old blonde actress. We were thinking we weren't we talking about nephews the other day and i said something like that like i wish there so lucky to have their whole lives have. You're not competitive with three or with her. Es case yeah. I don't know the word is there. Sh- there should be a word a non ugly jealousy. yes. I like in japan. The japanese have a word for it. Don't you think they would ever word for it. They have words for things that whenever i hear a japanese word that we don't have him is i often think. Oh man. shall we have jealousy envy. They're both ugly words. Yeah it's interesting to think of words like it's like a doting suggests that should there should be a word for that and they're you know they're probably as we don't know it Yeah they're probably. I know we're giving too much credit. There's a word. That i found that ryan philipe put on instagram. The other day it was so good. I was like oh god. Why don't we have this word. So the japanese have this word for when you're not hungry but you eat because your mouth is lonely. It's called kuchi. Saab be she. Could she be she. That's like board eating right. Yeah but i find myself very privileged thing to say. But i find or like if you're stoned or something that's different though when you're not hungry but you eat because your mouth is loan lunar stone. You feel hunger. Yeah that's true but don't you ever. I wanna say like like late afternoons. I find myself just like What's there to put in my mouth. I'm not necessarily like. I'm so privileged. I now apply. She took a major spill. Recently poor cat show hiking's talks about how much she loves hiking and and she mentioned that she was clumsy. I think in the interview. Yes she took this major spill and had had to be. I think she was an ambulance. Compatriot she hobbled down the hill and she has major like really fucked up her leg really badly i think she's offer feeding effort two weeks. I don't know why i felt the need to say that. I thought it was an american thing and the canadians might not really embrace it but did you. Did you ever go out in your costume. Inured for work. Yeah no we didn't do reno but we used to do group costumes as we did. We did like a year or two group costs. All of the shadow hunters gang. We would all go out dressed up sort of coordinated and we had. We had a good time but I did movie with john heater. Wants and he and we convinced him to go out. There is a local. It'd be funny either way. I guess a great story. And that's all you want. Yeah it would have been. "Oh my god. We're where wolves where. So how are you saying it. In the beginning. I just noticed in the world. Just i always it when you're tired and it's for an you've been fighting demons for seventeen hours. It's hard to say where it sometimes. Yeah that's That's an understatement. That it's hard to you. Just wanna go hormann in worship and worship and go to bed worship worship What's your movie of all time. Some really bad favorites. I always say these in this may actually just changed in the past week but gilda with rita hayworth princess bride and usual suspects. It's funny. I killed i now. I wanna see give because those those other two are so gilded okay. Yeah clutching her heart. She collects your heart and is very. Yeah it's kind of the end of noir and the beginning of kind of that old. Hollywood glamour of the thirties and forties. And it's just. The film is just feels like velvet. It's an old gangster. Movie starring. rita hayworth is this gangster moll who runs the show but It's just a beautiful film if you to live somewhere else. We kind of talked about this book. Where the next you want to go. But where would you live. If you could live somewhere else. I would love to live in london. I just feel like it very meant has the same sort of energy and pace as new york city but with a history that we don't have here in the united states. If you could have dinner with three people dead or alive from you've never met debendra rule a little bit. Because i'd love to have elaine stritch at the dinner just because it's so many things i didn't get to talk to her about and say to her because i you know knowing her when i was fourteen fifteen now so much more about her life and ten years of of of being woman in the industry and just being a woman in general. There's so many things. I want to ask her and talk and discuss great stories like they're probably fourteen at the time i'm sure she censored herself somewhat around you now even a little bit. Oh no but she has for millennia. I'm sure i would love to have think the economist and the musical theater nerd in me with love to have alexander hamilton. At the table you know especially given the year that we're pro the the economy that we're probably about to entering we need somebody who you know. He's fixed it before he can help us fix it again. And i know what he thinks of. The musical die would love to know that person. I'd love to be Sidney lumet or sitting the man. I never know how to say his name. That's always one of those names. I'm afraid to bring up. Because i'm not totally confident and how to say. Yeah lumet's lou. May sidney lumet sidney lumet i think as well but i when i was prepping to shadow the director i read his book making movies and was unequivocally like reinspired as to why i love telling stories because from the moment you start that book you can tell that it's yes it's written by director but it's written by a storyteller first and foremost yeah something that i would love to do. Who's your who's your favorite muppet. Oh statler and waldorf. Oh yeah great commentary. Yeah yeah yeah. Speaking of the best. This'll be the best one Yeah love them and that they could get away with being such. It's so funny. I never thought they were mean you know. They said the meanest stuff but they were like there was something that i may because they were old and like the only cut to them every once in awhile. I never was turned off by them. Now this is an endearing sarcasm to them. And i loved it. Yeah if you had to be age for the rest of your life physically what you pick a hard question for me. Because i know i know i know i. I recently asked the thirty year old. Disney relied twenty eight twenty nine. I would like to feel like you know. The best is yet to come so at thirty thirty three. Maybe but also i don't know twenty three. I was training and had endless energy to work seventeen hours and train a budget. Well and i mean. I still kind of in the same way but i I would like have that level of energy. God if you could be if you could be reincarnated as as non human animal. I would probably say a house cat. Yeah just because i you know. They lay in the sun and they get to roam around and have adventures of their own and ida cap that played fetch as a kid and generally loved. Yeah rather be called unattractive run funny unattractive at this weird thing and i don't know if it's it's not really a weird thing but i i really don't like the idea of measuring self worth based on appearances and i think it's gotten to be such a habit in our society but there's so much more to a person than your appearance and and your quote unquote whatever that's perceived to be. I find humor to be quite admirable and it's something that i love doing comedy and ice fired that i'm in such awe of people who are comedians and are so funny all the time i i would so much rather be considered funny attractive. You know. it's funny. I sell you. You were on set. I saw some of the set. Herzog's thing and i was like. How does how does more. How set the cat and like how did they put slick that makes sense now. Yeah did you watch the golden girls when you were a kid. I've seen it. Yeah okay which who do you. Identify with dorothy blanche rosa sofia at so i. I really do think. I'm somewhere between dorothy and blanche because i am very pragmatic and can be very sarcastic but also like i love to have a good time dogs or cats. Say both okay. 'cause i i grew up with it's cats choice but i can't help but i i i love those. I just love animals beatles or the rolling stones. Because i just worked at abbey road studios. I think i have to say the beatles hard. That's a tough one talking about skittles the other day. Are you skittles person. I do like skittles. I i would say for us candy goes. I'm this is my favorite time of year because candy corn is. It's such a polar. But i love candy corn. No kidding yeah. I never got into candy corn for some reason i. I don't know why. I think a problem with the it wasn't wrapped at. I was always a bit of a german. Now you just scoop it up. Candy corn all right. I wonder what's going to happen this year. People are not going to go out. I don't know i. I'm trying to figure that out because i ll. Obviously i love dressing up for halloween and actually well. La but toronto's an amazing town for halloween time here..

"Feeling like your have pants on if you forgot your mask one hundred percent. Yeah yeah yeah. It's so weird. How quickly that happened that. We adapted to that. It really is interesting. I mean it takes you know what twenty some days to form a habit. Technically speaking ugly speaking. Yeah i think it's something like twenty four days or something to form a habit as a human being and of doing something every day repetition at this point i feel like if you get an a pattern and you do it consistently for twenty four days it when we come out at this point i've received the day we've all formed habits upon habits upon habits on habits at this point. Yeah that's true. Love what happens is what what what. What's a good habit that you formed in quarantine a good habit that i formed in quarantine. I think when that you want to continue into your non quarantine life. I've been better picking up the phone and calling people. Oh yeah me too. Which i actually like. Because before we were able to kind of get out and socially distantly interact with the only thing i had was facetime And getting on the phone and that that was something. I hadn't done in do it occasionally but i hadn't really fully utilized that resource speaking from what. What is your most commonly used emoji which you say so. I've been thinking about this question. I could probably say something very sweet and cute and all that jazz. But if i'm being perfectly honest might have been surrounded by dudes for so many years. I make a lot of release shameless dirty jokes. Overtaxed most of the time so i would probably say the smirk face overtaxed. It's sometimes hard to totally frame things appropriately. You're making a joke. Sometimes you got just like set the tone with the right of oji. I'm a big fan of like the double entendre in texts. Because i think i'm funny it's probably not. It's usually a stupid pun of sorts. But if i i throw those smirk face in there. It usually excuses anything like that. And that's the one they're kind of like isn't it kind of like looking up a little bit like yeah if you could be a professional athlete. What sport would you play. Ooh softball pitcher kid. So i'd probably baseball Can you throw a curveball and this is probably dumb question but can you throw a curveball. You can you can yeah. It's it's slightly different mechanic. Obviously because it's underhanded supposed to overhand wind up more than once you go. It's been a while since i've started anything better. Classic hits. please don't please don't so i've seen a lot of girls throwing elbows that way. And it's not fun. Pop it back in right pretty much i think i don't know they never experienced it myself. So thank goodness back play softball again. I would love to place. How actually every year. It's one of didn't happen this year. But it's one of my biggest joys because it combines one of my favorite sports with kansas city. there's a bunch of guys from kansas city. You probably know do every year pasta. Yeah so that's one of the joys of my life that i do they possibly can. I'm we didn't virtually this year which we didn't get to go play softball in the big stadium but It's it's such an incredible organization. The hospital that had benefits is called children's mercy and they. They operate very much like jude. Where they don't you know families can't pay for the children's care they don't charge the family and they really really just care about taking care of the kids which is so important and You know it was started by all these. Incredible guys rob riggle. David kutner j. Paul rudd and we'll morte. Who are kansas city born and bred there like the pride of the pride of kansas city of the ring. A lot of us back that are not only from there but the they've all kind of worked with accumulated over the years. It's the best weekend That's really cool. Okay the big slick. I'm glad you mentioned that. If you have one snack food for the rest of your life what would it be. I have to say bread and cheese in any sort of like. It's one of my favorite. I mean growing up my my family's Mostly swiss so every house. We have good bread. Good cheese and good chocolate. It's just it's kind of in our blood as it were. But i grew up eating as a snack. My grandma would make bread or we would always have really great brad and just hanging out doing it but then now that i've traveled more to of my favorite things when i'm in a different country that if i'm in paris i'll go grab some bread and cheese and just wander the city and i really do think i could survive on bread and cheese alone man. Yeah i've cheese. I could do without but the bread bread and butter. And i'm thinking like really delicious hot breads that i've got. Am i hungry. Okay what's your. What's your swimsuit chocolate to. What's your go-to chocolate. I actually i did. This is a little surprise. I got stuck on a layover in an airport in switzerland last year and i stopped it. I was. It was near christmas. And i stopped to get some chocolate for my grandma and my great aunt and so. That's kind of been our goto. I got them a couple boxes of little tiny squares. So that's that's usually my go-to but they've they've been get little. My grandma just learned to take a selfie. So i get like self as from my grandma with her chocolate with her tea in the morning. And oh man. it's really cute do they. Do they have access. They're not swiss swiss with so their life has missouri accent. I'll tell you that much family is from missouri. What's that sound like. Like how would you say Oh yeah i'm from missouri. Where it's hard to find. You want to find good barbecue. Go to missouri. I have a weird time doing a missouri. Because when was an army brat. So when i first learned to talk i was actually. I was born in in the south so when i first started to talk. This is how i spoke and i had more of a north carolina. Georgia accent moved to missouri. And i kind of lost it somehow. So my accent is yes so. My accent is a weirdo. Validation of a lot of different things southern to to at what point did you end up then in missouri. Probably two and a half. When i moved to missouri but i definitely learned to speak elsewhere. But it's always funny. I always. I always put it this way when people ask what missouri accent as i say we take all the ours from boston and throw them in where they don't belong. Oh that's funny. Oh my god. I'm trying to. I'm trying to hear that. Now things in any rs. Yeah or there harbor and for example in a shadow under because they didn't realize i had a midwestern accent until this but we we had a a term called down worlders winter trying to say a word like down worlders or where wolves or things like that ours. Get into way..

"You read the stand when you were a kid. Because i was one of the books. I love stephen king. Probably not as much as you. But i try. I couldn't i was too. It was too daunting. I remember kids would carry it around kelly bragging like they were reading it and i think even carried it around for a little bit. Pretend your cat is going and right away. She's off her chair to reach for her copy of the sandwich Yes looks read. It looks red wine while it's a huge one. And so how. How many episodes set eight nine nine episodes and it's a whole book. It's they got through the whole and let's let's cool about this. But you'll appreciate as the stephen king fan seeking was huge part of the writing process of the limited series and he wrote a new ending. Wow so you can and and went. I'm not thrilled. you know. He he wanted to amend it as it were and say something else and so we got to do that. And it's great. That's that's cool. Because though i haven't read it i imagine. He was written in the late eighties. Early nineties yeah. He must have a. I'm sure newfound insight into what apocalypse apocalypse might look like in. I'd be curious what he's that's cool. What i love about this is that you know obviously once we get through this kind of period of time and in december. When this comes out we will have lived in this new world for almost a year. And i think i you know. There's the thought of our people going to be sick of pandemic and disease and world ending and things like this and what's great about the stand as it's less about especially our our interpretation of it it becomes less about the disease and less about the destruction of the world and more about the people that are left and what happened after and sort of makes a statement about. It's the choices that you make that. Determine your destiny and what you stand for that kind of says a lot about who. You are your core. Despite the external circumstances yeah like how you behave in higher stakes situations like heightened situations. I and that's kind of what you're saying. We're all discovering now. Probably not as heightened as the stand yet definitely not. I think my character is the the example of who not to be in the apocalypse and the antithesis. Of what i hope people will do. Wow how cool you get to play characters like that that you you seem so grounded sweet but you get to play characters who make bad choices. It was a lot it was it was a very interesting experience. Because i've been playing heroes for a lot of years doing the supernatural thing and then doing arrow for so long. It's literally playing a superhero for a minute I haven't played a villain in a really long time and it was as an actor. I loved it because getting to do something different and kind of stretch yourself in that way is very interesting. But you know when you're on set and you're making choices and you think to yourself you what's the choice. In this scenario that makes me feel like the grossest worst possible human being and having that be the right choice for the character kiss him very interesting heads space. eleven had despicable. And somebody another another adult is like you nailed it. Yeah that's a strange thing and julie's interesting she's you know she's sort of hedonistic narcissistic glutton of the apocalypse which is is very comforting glitter. And for you know. All manner of things So she's not into the masks. She's a no massacre. no definitely a no massacre. Getting getting to live in the world of vegas and alex. Cars guard is randall. Flagg is just evil. Who who was the first one. You said it all takes place in vegas vegas there's two camps and like all the good guys are with whoopie goldberg who plays this sort of profit from guide in colorado and then you have all the villains in vegas basically worshiping alex cars guard and it's it's fantastic that therapy that's right that there are two different camps. Do kinda remember because there was a wasn't there a tv movie in the. I want to see the early early. I think i did see that. So they had to. Recreate vegas in vancouver. Yeah it was amazing what they did because they found this old Like abandoned hotel basically and created a vegas casino within it so we had this all manners of extravagance. And and i wish i could go into more detail but i'll get in trouble and i want to see it. I don't want any sport it's on. Hbo in december cbs all access. But yes okay. Well.

"This is this job. Yeah cool this is crazy. That's really i know. I know. I bet i bet you have those moments. Those moments more clear maybe on like when you get to see i kind of. I'm thinking about like characters that i grew up with that i grew up like idolizing me. Idolize these superman. They're they're they're in the suit and suits are cool. And yeah you must. It must be really clear and you must go right back to childhood. I in my wildest dreams. Did i ever think it as a kid that i would be doing any of this. I wouldn't have believed for a minute. You're very active with share. We mentioned twenty. Four hour plays Which goes to charity but You do a lot of stuff with an anti bullying anti bullying camp. It which is great. Because i do i. Do i do a bunch of pro bullying things. Curious what the other side is why. What drew you to that cat. Was that something that you witnessed growing up. I was bullied a lot as a kid. I feel like that's something that you know. In different scenarios in her life people go through different. Things and and kids aren't always nice And you know i was. I was very lucky to have a great relationship with my mom and to be surrounded by other good friends that that helped me see the other side of things. But they're the fuel really alone and kids that feel very isolated. And you know. If there's ever anything i can do to encourage people to be kind to one another. It's something people forget so often. It's just it's so much easier to be kind to someone. You have to go out of your way to be unkind most of the time and then you realize that you find that you would be started talking about conventions and stuff do you find. That is a message that is Being related at these conventions and all these different types of people you know like awkward kind of different people on the spectrum. You meet a lot of those kinds of people. Well i feel like i'm fluent in off. I'm very awkward clumsy individual. As well many many situations you can relate. I can very much relate an. i'm what i love about comecon. Especially when you're i got to go to san diego con and what astound me about it is. I'm a huge nerd for so many things like i grew up on star wars. I absolutely love all that. And there's so many things that i'm a huge fan of everybody. Comecon is a fan of something but also there because they're working on something so it's a sort of mutual community of everybody's everybody's just there to to nerd out and celebrate all these worlds that we love and all these stories that we love and especially when we're as shadow hunters. I was telling you a little bit earlier about the community that they've created and it's so nice to be in a space that people are just there to to be a community and to celebrate a mutual love of something and no matter who you are or where you come from or whatever about your life outside of that everybody's there to to be a part of something greater and there's something so special about the so rare anymore. There's a real purity to to the phantom as well there's a real like warmth and positively to it's just these an innocence like it's like a yeah like you said you're a fan of star wars still like i was thinking about the other day a friend of mine auditioning for star wars and as i hope she gets it. 'cause like i'd love to visit sat and meet c. Three i think i get like emotional things that we were a fan of something i shadow. Hundreds is based on a series of waie books. I grew up loving and height. Finally set up my book show. I was never without a book in my hand as a kid. And so i understand what those characters need to people and i understand the responsibility of bringing that life in a way that that does justice to source material. But also you know. I go through and i see. It's not just the community isn't just about us or about the story. It's it's about these kids connecting with each other as well. And you know. I've i've gotten to have the privilege of being witnessed to this community into watching fan artists who were sixteen when the show started that are now selling there are online through the art of all different things because they the phantom like supported them in promoting their work and became a fan of them as well or i've seen kids make friends cost countries and across the globe and find people that they can actually connect with and relate to and feel as though they are part of that they felt alone. I've noticed that must really connect with you because you grew up. You were only child and you were left your own device in terms of connecting to others. I'm sure that's why reading was important and white star wars characters like that where you really need it. Essential for a kid in your position. Now that i've noticed a cab that you do promote the you put up on your instagram. A lot other people's are fan art stuff. That's really cool. I i never. I saw it as being something that could go beyond fan art. I didn't know that it was but you know makes sense. That's hundred percent. I'd just. I see how much these kids poor their you know their heart and soul into this art that they make and drawings that they do you know we. We've all been those kids out there. That are making art about something passionate about. And and just the fact that something that i i get the privilege of doing what i love for a living and it inspires someone else's artistic impulse whatever i can to promote that and thank them for that and to you know encourage that more often than not i hear at the cynical take on that which is like cheese. Calmed down this person's really obsessed with mayor like really like you know. I've never heard somebody expressed so purely the positive outlook on it. Which is your like leading with kindness in a way. That's really it's nice. It's refreshing feel like it's kind of brought out a lot of people's true colors in very interesting ways and all kind of dealt with it differently but i think kindnesses is the kind of thing compassionate. Kind of the key to everything anymore. The sears kind of been framed in a very strange way for me because i at the beginning of the year i just finished shooting the stand which is a the stephen king mini. Talk about it. Yeah yeah the trailer looks amazing. Thank you Why am i so cares where you shot it. But where did you shoot it. Vancouver and stand is like well yeah apocalyptic and it's that what timing They know that there was going to be a really. Don't think so Making this project and then going into this year and almost feeling a weird sense of deja vu for a minute. Wait a minute this god. That's so weird way you did..

"You and i had surpassed that height limit long ago. Thankfully they never replaced me in the show like mickey rudy pills or something like judy. Get growth suppressants or something. Holy knows told to do that anymore. So i had been auditioning for film and tv. Which i had never done in my life. Although i've been doing other things as well like i did i. I have a. I'd like to say a small obsession but it's not. It's a very large obsession with anything. That lin manuel miranda. Does i had done a done. A few readings and things of new shows as they were being developed musicals and things like this one of them was a new version of peter. Pan that was being developed by out flock. More and jeffery sellars and all those people that work with lynn. And i had such a great time working group wendy. I was the first wendy. And the son of the thing. And i did it. Yeah it was just like a reading. You know around about in the rehearsal spaces that they do. But i remember being so enamored. Because lynn came to the presentation and i was huge fan of his work and new kind of it was right he had just gone back to in the heights because it had just one it was about it was going to close and all these other things but he came up to me afterward and pulled me aside and said keep doing what you're doing kid 'cause you're doing you're in the right place. You're doing what you should be doing that. Little bit of encouragement from somebody. I respected so much. So yeah so getting to watch the a part of that and watch hamilton rise and all of those things but starting to work in film and tv in doing little projects here and there eventually got me to booking it disney channel pilot which took me to los angeles. It was the first time they tried to do. High school musical. The series. you've now. I can see beanie doing. I can see you doing that. that sell the mean girl and she was one of my my head minion best time. Talk to everyone fun. It's so funny because you that you're playing the part and that beanies playing that part because she's such a sweet she is such. I mean you know some sweet person must must have been fun for you guys to play last needles and so then went so now your your kid in your teenager in la. Did you do that a big job. you did. The mindless runner maze runner. Sorry just with dylan. O'brien really nice guy. Yeah you did a bunch of those right. The last two there were three pounds. And i remember the first one to just come out in. This edition came up for maze runner and literally. It was one of those you know where they keep the script so secret and they released. Maybe a quarter of a page of dialogue from. You know this is what they do when it's something that's like a hot property like i guess maze rent which maze runner was right. It was like a huge series. They keep it very soon. They don't want anybody to leak the script. So they yeah. Which makes it hard to audition. Because you don't know the context you don't know anything about the character. Exactly runner was such a weird one for me. Because i did the audition and when you have two lines and a quarter of a page go in and you do it seven ways and you go. I don't know what the yeah. I completely forgot about it. You can't beat yourself up only so many ways you can. You can do those three lines adr either. What they're looking for it or you're not you know it's either meant to be it isn't and that's kind of how it goes. It's fascinating that you had that mindset i. It took me years to get you know rejection and of dealing with it being like. Yeah i mean you know. There are those that hurt a lot more than others than those they get attached to. That don't work out. But i one of my first mentor's. She was an actress in kansas city. And she told me one day she goes. Look you're just starting out. You don't know a lot about this yet but just remember that an actress job and you walk in that room and for ten minutes. That's your performance and you give everything you have and do your absolute utmost thing that you love most in this world for those ten minutes for that audience in that room and then you leave it behind you forget about it you move on with your life and if it's meant to be yours if we'll be if it's not it's just such a healthy outlook i mean i i i i also think it really helps the acting because then you're able to just be present and not be in your head. You're very lucky. I don't think you i've just always focused on the joy of it. What we do for a living. Is we play even at work. Sometimes you even when. It's our seventeen. And i i don't know if you're familiar with like the. Cw shows do the big crossover of air. All the superhero shows. Yes and you're doing now. You're on a green arrow now. Got to be a part of the crossover last year. As the the the new green arrow following up stephen a mile there was a moment that we were on set and it was probably like our seventeen and there was some big dramatic explosion thing happening. But i looked around the set and i'm in a super suit. And then there's you know steven green arrow and you've about the flash in a couple of superman super girl about women and all of these amazing people and just kind of go..

"And then when i found out that these you know huge scaling life altering country altering forces of economics could be explained in math formulas and charts and sort of boiled down to these concepts. It blew my mind. So that's what i thought i was going to do with my life. The only thing we have in common we both own astronaut onesies but then we start to you just fascinated by this. This was your this was something that how how often we you. You mentioned vicky. How often would you see her. Like how much of a presence was she in your life. Let see with my teacher for several years as a kid like i was really really young like maybe three two to six or so when you develop a lover economics yes exactly and then she and i became friends and obviously you know she was friends with my mom and sort of just stayed in touch throughout the rest of my life. Yeah and it's. I'm so glad to have heard part of my life because i've watched her be that same force for so many other kids i believe she is. Yeah and my my mom's She's a science research scientist. Professor as well so i i have a love for teachers Such an appreciation for them. My dad was a teacher. My both my parents and my older brother as well Yeah that's really. What is your mom. What type of research. Infectious diseases is her specialty at a time. Wow what is she is she. Is she working on the great race. Yeah she's she's pretty much a teacher now but with all the information all the misinformation. That's been going on this year. Just having her to be able to call and go okay. Window i freak out. When do i stock up. What what what's actually on the freakout scale like. Give me a number that i should be on just so cool. My mom is kind of the opposite. She'll she'll read any whatever. Like fear based article pops up on on her like click bait and she's like oh my god you have to stay away from maple trees. That's how you're so lucky. That's so cool. See that's me. i'm like mom. Do i need to stay away from. Maple trees have hiking. What am i doing outside going. Get fresh air now. it's fine. just wash your hands. Don't touch your face. Where mask is that kind of. I mean like according to your mom. Is that kind of where we're at still. That's pretty much until we get a vaccine ultimately that's kind of where we're at is social distancing. You can wear a mask wash your hands. Don't touch your face. I'm so curious about her now. Can we get her on the show too. Sure i'm sure i could talk to her about it. She's very shy though it's so funny. She's extremely shy when it comes to public things. Yeah i have to. If i did the show hunters for for so many years. I had to convince her to come to set because she doesn't like coming to work because it's it she feels like she's in the way and it's not her environment and it's it's very interesting. Where do you shoot that show. 'cause i was trying to figure it out. I know it's not new york. Only because only. Because i love when they do like the brooklyn brewery at they always make a point every the production designers i every scene is going to have like a sign that says brooklyn or queens or so. It's it's like all right calmed down. I it's clearly not there. It's the brooklyn bridge. and i. i thought new orleans. But then i started thinking canada like maybe toronto thank. Oh it's okay very proud. How got to live in toronto for three years. I love toronto much. It's such an amazing town and it's you know you're in. We're there ten months a year for so many years and more. Yeah we twenty episodes of season so it took up a lot of our time and we never got sick of that city. We also had a really tight knit. Cast a You know we all live within three blocks of each other and spent all of our time together who those are my brothers. It's matthew dario who was on the show but it seemed like you guys must have had a lot of fun making it doing really dead. We were very lucky. We all clicked pretty much instantly. And i mean that they will be my brothers for the rest of my life. I love those dudes and they you know. I was nineteen when i started that show and so did that show from the time i was nineteen. At the time. I was twenty three and that sort of period of your life is so transformative and so transitional just as a human being used to fact. Yeah how did you get the part. Was it just through the normal audition kind of ways. Yeah yeah. I was auditioning in la and this pilot came up. And you know it's funny you go through i. I'm very much of mindset of an actor of i love auditioning because you you work on it and you the room and you play for those ten minutes and you leave it behind but there are some auditions where you read the script and connect to it instantly and you just know that there's a part of you that has to tell this story. And as soon as i read the pilot for shadow hunters instantly new at this character could be and what she could become and where she could go and connected with her. In a way that i hadn't in a really long time Oh that's cool. What do you think it was about the character. Because she's for the people who haven't seen it she's She starts out kind of She said she's turning eighteen. The mother has this secret. This family secret And who which she makes very obvious and you do a great job of not picking up hunter signals like all. We have to have this talk very serious talking. You're like it's fine and then but she's also an artist. She's like a very kind of sensitive spirit. What was it about specifically that script that you think you connected with well as a kid. I always looked for you. Know the female characters that were strong and empowered and sort of battles and brave to be individual and not said a mold because i ever felt like i fit any specific mold. So you know. Everybody goes with the disney princess. Trump's like moulana pocahontas. Where my favorites. 'cause they were the ones that always eight seven poster of milan on my wall. Kid kick ass. Yeah i do know that yeah. She's amazing she kicks ass. She runs it the boys she does her own thing..

"Just started watching shadow hunters. I'm twenty five minutes of your show. And i'm really upset because i'm like i'm hooked into it and i don't want another thing to be into but it's really fun and pulpy kind of soap operas. I really wanna talk about it and the acting on and all that but it has a very loyal fan base as you said. And so you've been going to. How often do you go to these conventions. Well in a normal world. I used to go every at least once a month to something somewhere in the world whether it was a shadow hunters convention or a multi fandom kahn or something because they have a between. I've somehow fallen into this world of doing a lot of these comecon genre. Projects shadow hunter. What was the first one cat that you did By the way. What should i call you. Account is great. okay okay. can we say that. You're from lee's point lee's summit. Kansas city is the best. Like because there's sony a little suburb area. Kansas city's the main like okay. All right i went down this whole lease whatever we won't say but i went down this whole lee's summit like stomach. Yeah is that what. It's called lee's summit. I actually grew up kind of a weird intersection of a bunch of little towns in in the kansas city area and i i loved growing up in kansas city because it was such a wonderful grounded place to grow up especially now that i travel all over the world and live in so many. Appreciate it more than that. I really do having that as a home base also best barbecue in the world. I will ever take people on it. I heard kansas city pash through but never spent enough time to like to try out the barbecue. It sounds like a very nice place to grow up. It's really wonderful and actually going back now. It reminds me a lot of nashville sort of ten years ago. There the towns completely changing and it's growing and it's kind of growing up as it were Which i love seeing just. Because i'm i'm so proud of this little hometown and it's it's modernizing in a way that You know i'm. I'm so so happy to see i. Also kind of say. There was raised artistically in the kansas city theater community. A lot of people don't know but there's a a lovely amazing little pocket of professional theater in kansas city. That is full of people that do it for the art and do it because they love it and just everybody does every job and there's no ego involved in all it is just a bunch of people doing theater and making heart because they love it and i just was so grateful to have that sort of work ethic as my base for. How did you get into that. Like how did you discover that community completely by accident so as a kid. I come from an entirely science and medical based family. Everybody in my family does something in that field. And i was a huge math nerd. Scientists has never really my thing. But i ended up. Loving socialist wanted to go into developmental economics as a kid that most kids ninety. Of course i. I was balancing the checkbook at age seven and not. That was more fun than going outside to play. That's what how did you develop. Do you remember early experiences of that. Like how you fell in love with something like that is an odd thing for a kid to gravitate toward i do. I had an amazing teacher. Her name's miss. Vicky i'm still friends with to this day. I went to miss vicki. So it's all thanks to miss vicki and really my family I went to a montessori preschool and she saw this sort of love for learning in me and this little spark and she decided to foster that and so she really encouraged me and pushed me and pushed me to to read into do multiplication division. And all of these things beyond what you're supposed to be doing it schoolteacher. That's incredible so. She taught me to love learning and between her and my family learning for me. It was always this kind of journey of discovery. And this fun thing. It was never a chore opportunity to to discover something new for yourself and to sort of be self motivated to expand your horizons. Wow so so were you often left to your own devices were you. Like was part of that curiosity foster just because you were kind of on your own like having to fill the time a little bit part of it. I feel like part of why became an actor. In retrospect is just living in my own imagination making these whatever situations but also whatever my parents or grandparents were doing. It became a game. It has been a lot of time with my grandparents growing up and my grandfather. If he was working in the yard was. I got to go ask him what he was doing and learned about it or if he was fixing the car engine or the lawnmower something. It became how engines work. And let's see how this goes and let's learn about this. You know he had stuff to do. People were doing stuff around you like adult stuff like lifestyle and you just you were there and so they had to look. I love that they had to look after you through the part of their. They just started absorbing the stuff that they were doing that. That's really and it made me love. Learning which i think why i. I love school so much. Love math so much..

"Story. We just go with that. Yeah okay could be a dream life. Good injury you're listening to. Life is short. I'm your frog loving house. Justin long sweet dude shampoo and with me as always is My guess closeted frog lover as well up until now in now. I feel bad for stepping on your story now. Okay well i want. I want solution for dawson's creek and it was for a role that i was really wrong for it was it was for like the cool jockey. Rebel comes into town like the new the new guy in town. Why did you say you were wrong. Well why would you think. I was brown hair. They're looking for more long blonde part of it part of it. I just didn't feel like that guide on was hard for me to be naturally that guy to put myself in that position and it was one of those auditions were. I'm reading with a castle. Who's not really. It's not like i have a scene partner. That's it's not like katie. Holmes is in the room it was the casting directors faulting the role of the hunky. Going next door. Well actually the guy who got. It isn't like a Classic i would say michael pitt. The actor michael pitt. If you remember him he's he's he's very he's handsome very handsome but he's but he's also but i'm saying he's not like a big hunk classical. I remember the ocoee. I remember that role. I i even remember the name of the character who is in henry. Oh yeah my rush because you re watch it. A couple of months ago he was genuinely played by michelle williams love interest and he was younger than her and that led to problems in the relationship because he wasn't mature enough right to handle the a quite precocious linley but he was she was. She was intrigued by him because he was kind of quiet and mysterious and he was. He was and sensitive. Well that's the thing. I required the audition. I remember required that i be cool and brooding all those things you just mentioned it and i didn't feel like any of those things and so rather than act the part I got very self conscious. And i and i tried to too hard to perform it and so i think about that audition. Only in the context of you know when like in audition. Some bad audition gets leaked it. Like i don't wanna say who's but we've seen that. Auditions are maybe not but they do. Sometimes and i always think Oh god i would be mortified if that one. That's the one i think about getting late. Because i i'm not being self deprecating like. I know it was bad it was embarrassingly bad. I bet you're trying to be cool. Like hey i knew about. Why are we talking about dawson's creek. That's a very good question. Well dawson's creek at. The time was on a network called the wb. If if you give kids remember that And then the wbz became the cw but they kept the general type of programming which is and the and the general type of fan base. Yeah yeah and generally speaking Actress much like the ones who were on dawson's creek were employed by this network including our guest today. The very talented very Cw lee attractive. Cw lee has that ever been an adverb. I doubt it can cat mcnamara cat. You don't think anyone's ever said that. Cw early may. I'm sure someone is headed by accident. Yeah sure for katherine right yes katherine mcnamara Should i call her now. I mean we get into that first caller different things but professionally known as katherine mcnamara. But you know now. I consider her a friend right so to me. She's now cat mcnamara so sorry but to some of you. She may be different nicknames but to the majority view. She's probably catherine so you're about to hear. She's not an extremely popular show. That has a rabid fan base. I think it's fair to say Called well they're not necessarily rabid not. They don't have rabies. No but they're they're a big fan base. "I oh you working so many actors and it's got to be like do you ever. Is there a time where you're like God. I wish we'd be with infinite earths thing. It's exhausting I don't know what I'm doing today. I don't know it just seems like it's so much panic attack every day. There were days of that. But maybe it's just me and maybe it's because I've been a part of so many from maze runner to shadow hunters to this so many of these crazy we have so many characters. And everything's happening all at once projects. You just resign yourself to the madness and lean into the fun of it because you get to go to work every day and where a super suit and work with some really cool people and run around and I remember looking around one day on set and I was in my super suit and then there were a couple Superman Dan and supergirl in the flash. And everybody you agree narrow. Everybody was there and I'm just going. This is how is this my jobs is this what I get to do for a living You know you're you're one of those people like my dad where I I don't know if this is true but I think my dad had more fun when he went to work with his colleagues Lavar sky and when I get home he's kind of like fuck. You Know Dad's home because he just seemed happier when he was at work. I don't know maybe maybe I'm wrong. I'm just saying it felt that way a lot of ways whereas I think you love your work. That's what makes you happy Adele when you go home for the holidays. I mean your mom and Dad I go home and see my grandparents my mom my friends family. They're it's it's really miserable city Kansas City. Yeah I did you let go. Can you put your work down ideal. And that's why I go home for a couple of days because I. My Grandma's House has always been my happy place ace as a huge woods in the backyard. That used to go wander around as a kid. It was like my literal and imaginative playgrounds and I used to just run around in the woods. Kids by myself and makeup fairy tales as a kid and I think that's part of why became an actor. I think it was always a storyteller. I didn't know that you could do that for a living and N.. Eventually that's you know. Obviously what I ended up doing is it hard to be. Present was so much going on in your life. Is it hard to be when you're when you're talking talking like when we're talking right now when people talk. Christopher walken once said this he was on. Conan O'Brien I never forget. I laughed so hard when people are talking and they the other things. You'd want them having a conversation with you. I'm thinking of a million things and Conan says what are you thinking of. And he says I don't know Tacos and so you know when you're with your family. Are you thinking crisis Arrow this Christmas movie. I've I've got so much going on. Are you really really. You can just separate. I can separate at this point because there are so few times in my life now that I do get to slow down and by by my own doing and by my own choice. Because there's I I'm a workaholic. I like to be busy. I liked to do things that I care about. I if if I can physically make time I'm for it. Why not but when I'm home? That's the time that I actually do. Get to relax and just be with my family because those those are the rare things now. Those are the special national moments that I get to just catch up and sit in my grandparents kitchen and everybody wanders in and end up. Having you know second meal of leftovers for is are we just opened a pint of ice cream and everybody grabs a spoon or a little differently though. Do you feel like there amongst or midst. Someone someone is it amidst right Ryan you nod your head amidst as the yeah. Yeah that's word but do you feel like sometimes they treat you like your your someone different now. No they not do right. No no actually. That's one of the things that I I love. Most about my family family. And my friends from Medicare or they pretend they don't care as far as I know they don't see me any differently. which is I think wonderful? I think the minute they see me differently. Thing is the minute I need to worry about what I am presenting to the world. There's no reason to be anybody different because of what I do. Oh or because of the jobs that I've done with true you know I'm still me but you're very mature like you're you're a mormon sure probably is eight year old as I am now. I think I was more mature as an eight year old than I am now because you graduated high school when you were fourteen or so. Yeah I mean it's not. Can you even imagine I barely graduated graduate high school I think have. Add and it was hard for me to focus. But you didn't have add zoned in. I was but that's I also was allowed to do you school at my own pace and in a way that worked for me. So it it. I think fostered exactly what I needed educationally and I was able to you know if I wanted to stand up at my desk I could if I wanted to do my homework outside in the middle of the woods I could if I wanted to do it standing on my head. That was what I did for the day or whatever I needed and I could do math for twelve hours a day if I wanted to or I could. Do you know a little bit of everything as long as I got done by the time it was due. And that's that's what allowed me to let my brain do what it needed and I just kind of went at my own pace and suddenly I was graduated before I even realized I was graduated. I wouldn't have said that that right way said suddenly I graduated probably the proper. No it's not a it's not someone out there is going on. Now she's right Sir William Shatner saying she would he what scares you missed. Opportunities Stagnant S- statements. I think stagnant is equivalent. If you ever get married. Do you ever think you'd ever want to get married. I'd love to you would I would. Yeah Well Gee I hear that Ryan Brian. She wants to get married. Not No no no no no but like every time I love that. Now what would you look for in in a partner. Somebody who makes better somebody who I can talk to debate with. And who makes me think and he makes me think differently than I. Otherwise would you looked at a big one laugh. Well that's the other part so it makes me laugh. Somebody who yeah of course. I'm a big. I'm a huge goofball. You that's how my whole family's that way we'll laugh about a situation before anything else. I my grandparents for example. I don't think I've ever seen them fight once in my life they'll make a situation silly early and laugh about it. How old or anything else? They're in their seventies. Does your grandmother ever take you aside and just tell you how much he loves you. Yeah surprised of you she yes. She texted me yesterday. She's like I love. Your pink hair is your hair pink. Yeah do you know I'm colorblind. White now it's paying the. Im Color can differentiate a lot of colors. I can see colors. Yeah can't differentiate them so I really thought your head was really cool but as white. But it's painting. Yeah what is it about horror movies that turns you on in a in a good like that makes you. Just you love them. I have my reason for them. Tell there's a couple. Things fit for me is nostalgic because my mom also loves horror movies and so she's she's kind that will just turn them on on a Saturday afternoon just because they're fun so that's kind of what I grew up with introduce. You got so many things I watched Kerry with her for the first time parole. Laugh at uh-huh. What else did I watch with her? For the first time a lot of the birds I watched with her. This is this is something I experienced my mother. She made me watch like motel. Hell make them indic- slowly. That's why I'm fucked those. It's a lot of like the little ones on Netflix. That I don't even know what game I haven't seen Joe Body directed at Mike Flanagan Flanagan. He was a guest list. Listen To me if you love horror go back and listen about three weeks ago Mike Flanagan. He directed Doctor Sleep. He directed the haunting of Hill House. Created it. He's an amazing director. And you should work with him and I'll put the good word in and boy I mean he. It's a great interview. I'm not to my own horn. You were there I am. I was there it was really good. It was good I was like a kid in a candy store. I was talking about the shining like everything stephen in king and so for me when I watch a horror movie it's like a roller coaster ride. It's it's adrenaline. I WANNA be scared and my problem with movies now a day. I know I sound like an old dude but I'd just nothing scary. Nothing really scares me. Jump stuff I want. Want something they talk about. This insidious was a great first to God. That movie scared me so much all my Ooh two loops that there are very few movies. That actually terrify me. I'd love the suspense though. That's what I love of sitting there and watching it. And maybe it's the the game of it all. Maybe it's the you know. I've been toying with the directing. But maybe it's I've we'll talk about that. But it's the toying with that idea of the formulaic nature. Of How do you do that. How do you build that suspense properly? And then let it deflate just just enough. The audience feel safe. And then you're really scared it's genius when it's done correctly and unfortunately you know if you think of movies like if you guys like horror movies you that aren't gory. There's a movie called the orphanage Toro that will blow your mind WanNa see Zombie movie. WanNa see a good Dombi movie trained Bussan you WanNa see a cool harm movie. That's really original with a great score and shot. Well it follows. I was going to mention engine follows. That's one of my favorite. We should watch horror movies. I have harmed screening. I screen horror movies with a bunch of my friends. I'm friends with my buddy John Heaters. Napoleon dynamite yeah. He's Mormon amazing. I love him and he's he's very family oriented kind of. It's just get me over for dinner. I see you know it's family but they come over. We watch horror movies. We dig up. We just really searched for good ones. It's hard yeah but anyway but that one I love I love it. Follows because it's so simple and it's that concept. It's also one of the best abstinence movies ever isn't it because it's I'm going to have sex after this. STD's from from hell it's sort of like what the hell have you have sex with. Somebody has sex then. It goes to that person that person that the guy had sex with right right and then it. It's it's the thing that will follow you at a steady pace a slow pace but a steady pay forever forever until it kills you and then it goes back to the person who gave it to you unless you pass it on to somebody else and you never know when your time you should make any follows to said but this time they could bring but they why can't they do have like gay characters because maybe you know the way they assume that sex is just a man and a woman in this movie. But what if it's I guess the characters just happen to be straight right but I'm not saying it's a bad thing I'm just saying maybe in the sequel you know it could be anybody. Yeah well I'm I'm saying that I was thinking but sex. That's why I was thinking that it would it still so if you're someone that person would get it but they didn't have any but I don't know how to get to. It didn't sound think about this story logic. That's actually a valid question. You can still have both sexual anybody. Yeah Yeah I mean how do we go. How did it get to me curious? Well back of does talk about other really not good what I just talked about. I think it's fine. I mean it's it's something most Orthodox question but it is valid question given the story or discussing defending engage people. Exactly I just WANNA see more games. No but it's the one horror movie I did see this year. That actually terrified me. He was US it. That's where we differ really. I felt it was. Here's my problem with us because the director of the first one was is brilliant brilliant. I'm not going to sit here and kiss some of his ass..

The movie back in the day and he went on a shadow hunters dad for four years but yes he plays your dad and shouted two hundred and he has grown so much as an actor. I love just watching his journey and I was married a wonderful Lisa and I just want to give a shout say regardless of what anybody thinks of the movie it they love it they hate it does. It doesn't matter if you look at his performance. I thought he gave a solid performance and he should get worked from that because he is he takes good direction. Any any any works hard he really does does. And I've I've learned so much from watching him and that's that's part of how I learned how to kind of do the job on shadow hunters is by talking to Isaiah and and every month or so. We'd have coffee find time in our schedule and have coffee and just Chit Chat and catch up and things he told you it was a long time ago. So don't even anything but I was like she's really she's really pretty just saying she's pretty. She seems really nice and she's gone. She's very nice. That's Zambia my Isaiah. Great Okay good talking to you but I remember Dad. I knew. Didn't he people the the data pulled a dead. I Love Isaiah. Basically is my dad at this point between him and Stephen I'm completely covered now are are explained to because we're going to get into some stuff I wanna get into last time. I know we talked about all the time and I said give yourself a break. I think I told you I Indiana yeah you never give yourself. Can you think if you stop working. You'll just completely freak out. I don't know about that for me. It's because I love work and that's that's part of why I do so many of these as conventions on the weekend like when I was shooting Aero there were so many times red fly back and forth to Korea for a day or two England. Wait wait wait wait. 'cause you say fly I to Korea for a day you fly to burbank fly to San Fran. Maybe for a day. You don't fly to Korea for a day I did. That's far. It's it's only a ten hour flight from Vancouver sends a lot of you know. What do you work every day? I was at that point. And and you still muster up the energy and the the attitude. I slept for about ten hours on the plane. This is an interesting guest guys because most most time we talk about guests you know people have their insecurities. Everybody hasn't scares people have their anxieties and depressions in their things and the things that make them tick and adversity they face and and you're talking. I'm we're talking today. Someone who's on the show before but maybe as important to look at someone who actually functions really well under pressure and it doesn't let the best doesn't let things get to her like we do the reason I fly back and forth so much is because of these conventions is because I agree exactly with with what you were saying before. It's I had a long conversation with one of my friends before I did my first convention because I wasn't one hundred percent sure about the whole concept of it and in all of that it was a little strange I didn't fully understand it but it's become one of my favorite things because you can connect with people and you know we pour our blood sweat and tears into things things as actors and half the time people just go. Yeah that's nice that's good wash it or it's like my dad. My Dad will say Dan. I'm doing this movie movie. Where when's it going to be in theaters while it's an independent movie so it's not a real moving? No it could become a big so. You're not filming a real movie. Where no I'm in the most movies they just don't do? We hope they do. Most shows fall under the radar. I did a show for two years. Called in pastor. People loved it now. The people of the rain and things go away and that's the story of our lives. It's we get a job and we're working and then we're not exactly unless we're Catherine Mack. Well it's truly for me. It's been so special to get to actually because I've been a part of these shows that have such fierce phantoms to go meet people and connect with people all and hear their stories and just talk and see the people that I see online in person. Because they've especially the shadow hunters fans they have taken this this this fandom and their their love for the show and taking it far beyond being fans of us or being fans of our characters or the show and created this movement and this wonderful space for people to feel accepted and loved and able to be their true selves. No matter what they are and I wanNA support that as much as I possibly can. Have you ever had someone come up and cried you and then you get emotional several times. Actually Gimme a good example that one that resonates in your head that you you couldn't believe the impact you had in someone's life off and in your response. I have one in particular. It was a girl that I was having coffee with. And she sat down and said I wanted to thank you for this character in the story that you've told because I lost my mom last year and have I've had to kind of take care of my sixteen year old sister schools eighteen and my character on shadow hunters lost her mom at a certain point during that season right around the time she'd also lost her mom and half of the season was about dealing with that loss and overcoming it and clary actually found her specific powers through that grief and in dealing along with that and this girl had somehow connected with that story and that she was and we both you know shed a little tear had a little Cryan and you know can I cried with her. I couldn't help it. I mean it's when these stories are so touching and so beautiful. It's it's amazing you have to take a deep breath and you have to who feel it is important to feel it. I don't know if it's you know some people I understand. Everybody has different strategies or strategies but sort of not defense mechanisms. But sort Commu the word for God's Sakes Ryan to something of it to you know what I'm saying like like they have their ways of dealing with things couple Ryan if we we meet somebody and they start crying maybe Ryan will go. I'm sorry to hear that. And he won't break down or whatever but you know maybe I might just sort of like lose my shit a little bit unlike feel with them not always what I'm saying people are. I'm not saying you would do that. Ryan down now. If someone cries in front of you and they're saying Ryan you really been an influence in my life and thank you so much and they're crying thing you have the wrong person. I'm sorry but you have the wrong. This is not me. That's really the the big things and the small things so it's little things like that but then also you know this just goes to show the the heart that is in this phantom. We were at a convention in shadow shadow hundred. We were at a convention in Brussels. I think it was either Brussels or Paris F.. Forget but we came on for the year at the end of a convention. You on your like. Hey thanks so much for coming guys by later are we all walked up on stage and suddenly turned the lights off. All the kids pulled out these giant heart shaped balloons and started singing the theme song you sing this room of. It's over well song people people no. I'm not a look I can't it's the this is the hunted that song that everybody's things for our show but they sang the whole song and all all of us on state were crying by the end of it. All of you guys too. I think a couple of us. I don't cry. I've seen him cry on screen and beautifully beautifully to these fake tears. I don't think so. Have you ever used fake tears. I have but that's after like a ten hour day that's twenty times gleaning. God that's that's the hardest man when you have to cry you just can't feel or how about I remember crying in seen I was just emotionally wanted them to blow. Oh the vapor. Whatever in my eyes and I had eight pages of dialogue after that my eyes were swollen? Like golf balls stone. I looked like I. I remember the episode. I remember how terrible I looked like. Oh my God can do anything you want us to do. Yeah no siege. I Shit Marvel my shit. It's so funny though because sometimes there are days where sometimes if you're doing it twenty times you need that by the end of it but then other days it you'll just connect with something on on another level so deeply that you don't need it and somehow it comes every time do you think your Do you worry about how you look onset. Do you WANNA look greater. You just have to trust people enough to be like. Hey they've got my back. What can I do isn't it? It's sort of a waste of time. I think we've all been there as an actor. You're like insecure. You're this and you got hope that somebody's watching from behind the Monitor and says Rosenbaum looks like Shit. He's got a huge burger under his nose. Can someone go the you have to have faith you do and it really depends on the character for me like there are some characters where you're supposed to look good and you need to look good and that's the point of it but there are other characters uncertainly particular scenes where you're covered in blood and you're crying your sweaty and you're supposed to look horrible as well. I think you should and those are the points where I actually. We'd rather look bad. You know that's something that I give Arrow so much credit for is that MEA the character I play on there is. She's a boxer. She's a streetfighter. She is the better she she is and she's hitting the face just as much as the man on the show and it should show that so every time she gets in a fight she comes is.

"mcnamara" Discussed on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum
"Inside of you with Michael Rosenbaum was not recorded in front of a live studio audience. Are you? Are you sure you're comfortable move some pillows over there? So you have some yourself. You can do it every day. I'm like a cat. I have to, you know, you're like a cat. I'm like a cat, and my name is cat. So I have to kind of Ness a little bit. Unfortunately, I gave rob Mike because I want. Yeah. Well, I wanted him to be involved in the show right at first. I didn't think he was that funny. In fact, I think that's what you'll gather well, sometimes I'm not that funny. So I think you'll have to probably carry the heavy lifting. It's not, you know, the show isn't about being funny. It's about being real. I see, you're, you're, you're, you're publishers sharleen. Yeah, she's here. She is. I don't think anyone's brought their their publicist yet really, but maybe after some people have heard about the podcast, Michael jas brought his bodyguard, Michael Jordan air yet, and no one knows who he is right now. This is how good of a producer is. He just gave me the phone type in my password interviewing you. That's nice. Yeah, I think I think everyone having a Mike is a good idea because instead of being the nameless faceless shadows on the corner and run can have a voice, you're saying we should give your published Shirley and publicist. I can't say publicist show this Shirley. We have a lot of words in the show that are hard to say to you phrases. Yeah, out Lilith is extremely hard to say because Lilith he'll be going. She was our big bad villain this season. And so you know, you'll be going along saying align really feeling the rhythm, and then you get to the word Lilith and there's so many continents and bowels and l.'s like all, put together a little tiny word. It just takes so much. It's true and down Wilders the other zone roller sound worlders worlders and I don't know if it's just me because I have a slight midwestern accent and my carry my ours too heavily, Kansas City. Yeah. Others close enough though, three hours on the on the freeway, but it's it's a lot of ours in one word as well and ws, and it just gets muffled, Katherine, McNamara, AK, cat. You like to be called cat. It just kind of happened, you know, everywhere growing up, I was always, Catherine. And then I moved to New York and ended up doing a show with three other Catherine, so's automatically given the nickname of Katie Mak just Kuti married. I know choice of my own. I was sat down by one of the other actors and they said, you are now Katy Mak because there's too many Catherine's here, and then I moved to l. a. and somebody went, no, I don't like Katie. I'm gonna call you cat. And then I was just cat from that point forward. I think a probably since those nicknames like my nickname's. Rosie, like that on. Thank you. Well, let's think of mcnew. Nicknames for each other? Okay. Instead of Katie MAC or Camac is fairly new? Not many people. I've like one person called me came back, came back, say I'm already original rub. Yeah, but like I was saying about rob, he kind of adds something to the show. He's a big shadow hunters fan. Hey, not now. Okay. Well, let never seen NADA shadow. Well, he's not okay, right. But he's that's not his job as a producer. Is it not to watch the show? I don't think he's never seen smallville. He's been in. I saw guardians of the galaxy debit. I was unrecognizable. I have a head CGI face. How cool is that the CGI face? Well, you know, for the most part, I think most people would think that's a really cool thing to be just in the movie. And I feel that way too, but I was hoping you'd see my face. Well, yeah. I mean if somebody said, hey, cow, we want you to be in this movie, but you're, we wanna see your face, guardians of the galaxy. I'd say, hell, yes. If you've ever been CGI. I'd I have not not my own person..
