The first time that a pope is called senior bishops to discuss sexual abuse to the church. Catholic Church credibility on the line at abuse meeting

"Pope francis. Made the stunning decision Friday to defrock Theodore mckarrick who is now an ex cardinal and the former archbishop of Washington this over several cases of child sex abuse and harassment the harshest punishment yet for such a high ranking member of the church and comes less than a week before the Vatican's highly anticipated summit on abuse in the church. Paul Murphy is a history professor and director of the institute of Catholic studies at John Carroll university. He tells KCBS anchor John Bristow, the summit could be a global. Moment of recognition on the issue. First of all where will this summit take place? This summit will take place in Rome. And it is a meeting of the heads of the national bishops conferences. Throughout the world. So there will be more than one hundred bishops present as well as Vatican officials, and for our listeners who might not be terribly familiar with the workings of the church. Can you put into context how big this decision is to to have this? It's a significant deal because when the sex abuse crisis among the Catholic clergy broke into public consciousness in two thousand and one in the Boston area other churches throughout the world in India Africa, Latin America claimed that this was an American problem that we Americans were too loose with our sexual mores. And that's why it happens their sexual revolution. And all that. I think what pope Francis. Trying to do is impress upon the bishops of the rest of the world that this is a global phenomenon that that goes to the heart of how the church functions he blames much of it on clerical ISM. And it's not just an American problem is he's seen. It's clear. A problem in Latin America, it's also problem in India in western Europe, as well significance here is that they're actually going to try and take steps to make sure that this is dealt with universally. Okay. Paul is there any indication that we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel where this is concerned. It it could be it depends on how resistant certain members of the hierarchy are actually being held accountable to this the great crisis. We face today is not simply the crisis that priests abused children sexually but bishops didn't respond adequately to it. And they seem to hide the real magnitude of the problem. We now know it was fire worse than it was. So I think we're now at a tipping point in terms of how the church is going to deal with this issue. I think great strides have been made in terms of the protection of children in the Catholic church since two thousand and two. But now we have to deal with the issue of how to hold bishops accountable don't do their job. And finally, Paul Murphy. What should we expect to now going into the summit? Well, I I don't think we should expect that they're going to solve every problem in the three day meeting. But certainly I think what's going to happen is that the experts in Rome who are clear on the issue are gonna win form the bishops around the world to heads of each of these national bishops conferences that they have to take seriously. And this is how you do it. And here are the experts. Do you need to turn to this is not going to be a meeting where they're going to deliberate? How serious the problem is this is kind of a come to Jesus moment for those bishops. So that they actually take a take this seriously as the actions and know, the pope's actions regarding the now former cardinal archbishop, McCarrick

That's very high up in the Trump administration is Jared Kushner, I can't say enough good things about Jared. Jared is such a genius. There you go. But let's get back to the Catholic church. I'm the dells diocese. And of course, the Texas conference of bishops saying all of the diocese across the state are going to investigate all their active. Priests are going to have a panel of former state and federal law enforcement officials, but I've told you that this has been done before on the second or third. I mean, this is like the fourth or fifth round of of child rape scandals. And they keep happening and keeps happening because they keep covering up because they're not. Because they won't cover it up. She because they won't fix the problem. They don't want to. It's a it's a sick problem. And by the way, it's man the problems men not. Catholicism the problems, man. The problem is the way the Catholic churches run for one central power that has billions and billions and billions and billions of dollars, by the way, just in the last six years. The Catholic church is paid out three billion. On child. Rape allegations cardinal. Mckarrick Theodore mckarrick was they knew who had raped boys and groom them and was was betting down young priests that were becoming priests in the seminary, and that was covered up while he was able to rise to become the most powerful pope in America out of DC his replacement Donald worl- is going to be resigning in the future because he at first saying, no, he wouldn't. But because he was. Covering up overseeing the Pennsylvania, priests were raping boys a thousand boys three hundred priests raping, and that's not even including. Philadelphia that they had their own like years before. So this is this is a I call it the snow. This is difficult, but it's a rate machine. Chile. Scotland. I mean, you name it the countries that are currently going through stuff. And and I mean, it's disgusting. And it's terrible. And like I said that the worst of the Saul is the damage does to these boys in their their view of God. Their view of God. Frank Keating was the former governor of Oklahoma. He resigned he was picked by the US conference of bishops to be the team that would help end this all and Rudolf out like twenty years ago, he resigned because he said they were as a former prosecutor they would just like the mob. And the mafia covering up and going after the people that were trying to expose stuff. That's how they roll. And so. People are not happy about this. But I just told you that they paid off the three guys that were boys that were raped by the former priest cecelia's in oak cliff at the church where they had a ceremony of sorrow today. The everybody was outraged widen the Dallas police go after this guy and arrest him to investigate this. And they said we can't because the Catholic church. We find out pay the Dallas diocese paid off the three victims, and then went public with this told me shut up. Shut up. And boy they stuff their wallets. But they told him to shut up, and that's why there's no Dallas police investigation because they don't have to be the wants to cooperate in this priest was running the church clip for twenty seven years, and I'll tell you right now he didn't just rate three boys in twenty seven years. If they have an insatiable appetite and probably did three year probably at three new victims a year if not more. And that is how child rapists role. Eight hundred two eight eight WBZ AP's our number eight hundred to eight eight nine two two seven Bryan. And college station is very upset with me. He says, I I don't have any of the facts right now, he had me and one thing I said two hundred and twenty active priests. That's just the Dallas diocese. That's not the other diocese across the state of Texas. But the point is the only investigating active ones. But again, they did this before I mean, Frank Keating was picked to run the whole thing, and he resigned because they're the mafia, and this is the fourth or fifth or sixth time that boys are being systematically raped across the globe and paid off and shut up and no prosecutions. And it's never gonna end. Now, Brian I promised I would let him roll Brian your back and thank you for holding on WBZ AP. Yeah. I want to know where you get your facts. A you were wrong on the two hundred twenty Parise. No, I wasn't die alone. You said there was two hundred twenty priests in the state of Texas Dallas, diocese two hundred and twenty I'm sorry. If I didn't say all the diocese. Well, let me ask you this. If I don't know what I'm talking about. How many diocese across the state of Texas other Texas dies. Yeah. How many other because you said, I don't have any facts. I have that fact seventeen. No, you're wrong. You don't have. I'm not gonna yell at you. I'm not going to yell at you. But you don't have your facts. Yes. I do know this. Look look look on the state of Texas diocese there. Seventeen. Knock don't be. I won't be mad at you. Like your me. It's fifteen but go ahead whitewashing at seventeen. Look it up. Okay. You asked me what my sources. Are. You ready Texas Tribune NBC five Dallas Morning, News NPR, the New York Times and the Washington Post as of right in front of me. It's not including the twentieth. Thirty others. Governor Frank Keating was picked by the US conference of bishops to run the second or third or fourth nationwide. Scandal cleanup any resign? He's one of my other sources, did you talk to governor Keating, I can read you as letter. Would you like to know? Did you talk to him just like the poor boys down? Do you think? Governor Keating didn't write that letter. I have no idea seen the letter. But I do know you have too many other facts you told the cardinal that has been stripped of his. A complete priesthood you call him by pope need to go back. I didn't. Yes. You did. Call him a Polk go back and look at your recording. You call him a pope, I called hooah pope the cardinal. That's been the cardinals are not pope's. Okay. Listen, if this is all you got. I mean somewhere in this world right now a boys being raped by a priest. And this is all you wanna do is you want to argue about dotting tea or crossing an eye about calling. Somebody a cardinal that I call the pope, maybe not because I meant to but is Allie. You got boys are being raped right now. Less than one percent. And you're blowing it up way out of proportion here. Let me let me read you the Frank Keating enterprise. I don't really need to know. You don't you don't actually want to hear what he said as a he's a devout Catholic. Well, you told me I could roll. But you keep in rutting me. Okay. Well, go ahead there seventeen die season the state. That's all you got high. I happen to know a lot of seminarians, and I happen to know a lot of priests. I know five or six of the bishops of the seventeen. And I have a guy who was very good friends with cardinal McCarrick. Do you believe that he raped boys? I asked the question first, how long has Bishop burn. Don't listen, do you? Do you believe the highest cardinal in America? Most powerful cardinal McCarrick raped the boys that you believe he raped those boys. That's not that's not my point. You're the reason boys are still getting raped gone by. I'll just read the couple of sentences out of the resignation letter from Frank Keating number eight hundred two eight eight WBZ AP eight hundred to eight eight nine two two seven. As I have recently said. Governor Frank Keating sex abuse is not just a moral lapses a crime that should be fully prosecuted as I recently said and repeated on several occasions, our churches a faith institution a home to Christ people. It's not a criminal enterprise. It does not condone and cover up criminal activity. Does not follow a code of silence. My remarks, but some bishops have found offensive were deadly accurate. I make no apologies to resist grand jury subpoenas to suppress the names of offending clerics to deny to skate to explain the way that is the model of a criminal organization. Not my church. The humiliation the horrors of the sex scandal. Must be a poisons aberration a black page in our history that can never recur. It has been a disastrous to the church in America. Most Americans bishops are fully supportive of the board's effort. This was his letter in two thousand three and here we are today. And all this guy can do is talking about how many pre stab, sir. "Twenty WNYC. It's morning edition from NPR news. I'm Steve Inskeep. And I'm David Greene. Let's learn what we can about an important meeting in Rome today. We do not know when or if pope Francis has going to take serious action to confront the clergy abuse scandal in the Catholic church, but we do know that several US cardinals and bishops are meeting with him today in the crisis and its decades long cover up will be on the agenda earlier this week cardinal Donald world, the archbishop of Washington informed, his priests that he plans to resign over his own scandal over mismanaging abuse cases. And all this comes after months of mounting pressure on the church to address decades of widespread abuse and cover up with bringing NPR's, Sylvia. Pohjola who joins us from Rome. Hi, sylvia. Hi, david. So let's set this up here. The context the pope has been accused of dealing far too slowly with the problem of clergy sex abuse. Could could this meeting be responsible that well, you know, cardinal Daniel DiNardo? The head of the US bishop's conference asked for this meeting after several shocking events. There was pope Francis. Demotion in July of Theodore mckarrick as cardinal I'll following credible allegations that he had abused minor decades ago. And then it was the Pennsylvania grand jury report revealing decades of abused by hundreds of priests and former Vatican diplomat. Karl many beacon knows bombshell letter accusing pope Francis of covering up mechanics sexual misconduct Denard the wants a full Vatican investigation of the McCarrick affair and says the former diplomats accusations against Francis deserve answers. But he's on record is being questioned by media reports that two victims in Houston accused him Dido of not stopping a priest arrested last week on abuse charges while I mean, just listening to describe all of these cases, it's just a reminder of how widespread all of this is any idea yet. About what might come out of this meeting today? Well, we don't know if there's a formal agenda, but it's likely it'll focus on McCarrick if when and where the eighty eight year old prelate will be subjected to a church trial. And then the case of his successor cardinal Donal world, as you said he has announced this week that he will come to Rome to talk to the pope, and according to his office to ask him to accept his resignation there. Many Catholics are demanding that he step down. It's not clear whether whirl. We'll be here today though. Okay. So we have this meeting today Sylvia yesterday. Pope Francis called this unprecedented meeting of bishops from around the world with this single focus a single topic protecting minors. I mean is the Vatican beginning to see church sex abuse, and this crisis as in some sort of different more broad way. Like a global problem. Absolutely. I know many Vatican officials had long claimed the sex abuse crisis which exp. Floated in Boston sixteen years ago was an American problem. They can't say that after the scandals that have erupted in Chile, France and Australia, for example, and just yesterday in Germany media reported that a church commission study revealed some seventeen hundred clerics abuse nearly four thousand miners over a period of seven years. In the Catholic church, there have been so worst before but this is a big one NPR religion correspondent Tom. Gjelten thanks Tom of. Course the world of social science got a rude awakening a few Years ago when, researchers concluded that many of the, studies in this. Area appear to have deep flaws some of those same researchers report. That it's a problem even for the most prestigious scientific journals but their study also finds that some scientists. Are surprisingly good at anticipating which studies are likely to. Stand the test of time and Richard Harris reports science is a process of exploring the unknown so Brian no sick at the center for open science and the university of Virginia says we should not expect every result to be repeatable in someone, else's lab the challenge is. Separating the, good from the bad I'll substantial portion. Of the literature is reproducible we. Are getting evidence that someone can independently replicate and there is. A surprising number that failed to replicate no sick wanted to see how. That plays out in the journals, where scientists often take their flashiest and most provocative, findings science. Nature no, sickness far-flung, colleagues now report that of the twenty one social. Science papers Published in those journals over a recent five year span thirteen checked out an eight apparently did not one of the eight studies. That failed this test came from the lab of will survey he in colleague at the university. Of British Columbia renaissance eary's of experiments to see whether people who are more analytical are less likely to hold religious beliefs in one test undergraduates looked. At pictures of statues so half of our. Participants looked, at a picture of the sculpture the thinker where you know here's this guy, engaged in deep reflective thought and in our control condition they'd look at. Their famous statue of the guy throwing a discus. People who saw the thinker expressed more religious. Disbelief but you're now on the faculty of the, university of Kentucky recognizes that his experiment was really quite weak our study in eyesight was outright silly but what interested him most in the new study involves an interesting twist several hundred social, scientists were, asked in. Advance to predict which would pan out in which one Wouldn't they're taking bets with each other's against us address Trevor is at the Stockholm school of economics and co author of. The new analysis which was published in. Nature human behavior she says those forecasts were spot on so these. Researchers were very good at predicting which studies would replicates, so I think that's great news for science rubber says if you can get, panels of experts to weigh in on exciting new results the field, might be able to. Spend less time chasing faulty conclusions known as false positives false positive result could make up the researchers and the original researcher spend lots of time. And energy and money on resolves that turnout Sinatra. Hold and that's kind of wasteful for resources and inefficient so the sooner. We find out that a result, doesn't hold the better this is a very intriguing idea but Jonathan Kimmelman at McGill University says it may. Be limited to a group of scientists with particular skills, when he's asked medical researchers, to make predictions about. Studies the forecasts have generally flopped that's probably not Skill that is widespread in, medicine better than detecting problems in already completed research scientists like will survey are, thinking hard about the incentives that encourage them to do weeks small, studies in the first. Place the way to get ahead and get a job and get ten years by publishing Matsen lots of papers and it's hard to do that. If you're able to run fewer studies but in. The end I think that's the better way to go is to kinda. Slow.

"Twenty three minutes now before the hour of seven o'clock Not a big story that we are covering. Here this morning is that of a The archbishop cardinal Maria Vigano and his eleven page written testament accusing pope Francis of failing to. Act on archbishop Theodore mckarrick abuse and his behavior with fellow. Seminarians and other priests In this testament the former apostolic nuncio to the, United States has accused several senior prelates, of complicity in covering up allegations of sexual abuse has claimed the pope Francis knew about. Sanctions imposed on them cardinal McCarrick by Pope Benedict but but chose to repeal them anyway the archbishop Vigano served as the, nuncio in DC from two thousand seventy two thousand sixteen so the Benedict in the late two thousand seven posed on McCarrick sanctioned similar those now imposed on him by pope Francis but pope Francis in the. Very early stages continue to cover from McCarrick not only did he not take, into account the sanctions that Pope, Benedict. Had imposed on him and the former archbishop of DC advise the pulp Vigano did to appoint a number of bishops in the United States including cardinals. Of Chicago and Newark archbishop Vigano who said his conscience dictates that the truth be known as quote the Corruption has reached the very top of the church hierarchy any call ended his, testimony by calling on pope Francis, and. All of those implicated in the cover up of archbishop McCarrick abuse to resign They said archbishopric Donald said McCarrick gravely immoral behavior was seminarians and priests was at the root of this and there were several popes and the Vatican secretaries and other archbishops and cardinals there were well, aware? Of mechanics behavior and no one lifted a finger to stop him and what what we now. Have again in the in the, Catholic and, this is, why out of the national Catholic register right we had the, the battle within the Catholic church. Of the Roman Catholics versus the new Catholics new Catholics are. Largely very liberal very progressive very social Justice minded very Jesuit in nature versus the Roman Catholics were which are more traditional. Heritage Catholics and now the second schism battle is emerging within the church and there are those like archbishop Vigano and others are calling for Making sure that there's, a purge of all homosexual seminarians. And priests within the church and then you have the left. They're calling Ford and the syllabus the to allow priests to marry Which anyone. Who follows this on a regular basis knows that's an absurd. Suggestion because there are pedophile that are, married there are people that are abused that. Ended up being, homosexual that are married the marriage is a cover really come out later in life that's not. Going to, end the problem but that is what is being proposed, here this is again I think for people who are advocating. That they want the church destroyed and the faith diluted so again, the sacrament of holy orders as a Catholic is you you take that sacrament and you make. A vow to God you are married to the concept of being a, disciple of. Christ and that's that is your vow that is your commitment and. That is what has been different we've, seen Frank over the years due to shortage in, priests and yes let's not let's, be honest here they're going to, be another shortage of priests if if they do accept the purge And continue on with that but they're going to have to do something they can't keep up. With the status quo when you have the pulp when you have an, archbishop accusing. The pulp of a cover-up who knew of this kind of behavior. And is calling on him to resign There are serious problems, within the church right now well they're already worse serious problems not related to the sex abuse and and Thalia And Lord knows what else Because you had this ongoing war if you will within the. Vatican amongst conservatives, versus liberals and of course you have liberals that want to reform the Catholic church into the so-called twenty-first-century and you have others. Who are opposed to that. So that was one thing now you got. This on top of it but what we're talking about right now has been going on. For the past seventy years and obviously there had to be some cover-ups and this Cardinal Rather the archbishop Carlos. Maria the Gano is is just the latest one to basically. Say there's been a cover up on the part of the Catholic church leading all the way up to the pope, himself whether it's this pope or. Another in this particular, case this pope apparently ignored the sanctions that were placed against Theodore mckarrick the cardinal by Pope, Benedict, Benedict apparently thought there was enough to it that he stripped him of all priestly duties and ordered him to a lifetime of prayer and. Penance but when Pope Francis came aboard he lifted those sanctions and allowed McCarrick to continue. His ministry And therein lies the problem and again when you're not recognized luck when you're not we've said, this before when you don't. Can't name the enemy and you. Can't identify the problem then you're not. Gonna win you're not gonna clean it out you're not. Going to turn, things around and, this is, just another black eye for the church but but again. I just wanted you know I'm sure a lot of people are aware of it there are those on the. Left that have, infiltrated, into the church and they want to destroy, it from within. And right now sadly I have. To say they're winning. Six, forty four traffic.
