Patrick's Hot Take on Clubhouse

"Everybody it's another episode of after hours and today. Oh boy we're going to talk about the most fomo inducing social media app out there drum. Roll me second drummer. Drummoyne desk here. It's called clubhouse okay so you might remember a couple of weeks ago. We had A listener mail. Message from brent mcginnis and i was talking to brat around that time and we stayed in touch. He wrote me a note and he said hey. Do you have any advice for clubhouse. You know i'm going to start getting involved clubhouse and my my answer was i don't know because clubhouses causing me a bunch of foam stress i don't think about clubhouse and so i decided to talk about club does this week because it. I just said it like a canadian. Their club hosts. I meant clubhouse. Because everybody's talking about clubhouse. I feel like every conversation i have has a clubhouse element and everybody kind of criticize out clubhouses the worst but yet they're all on it and so i just think it's interesting to unpack that. What the heck is going on with clubhouse and so i have five conham went through for five hot takes on clubhouse that i wanna share with you today okay. Hot take number one this. I don't think it's that hard to take. But tell you think i think clubhouse is interesting and i'm gonna tell you why i have spent a little time on there and people have cool conversations. That are outside of the norm. So i think the very obvious use case clubhouse it's a place to congregate a following so for example we can have a really cool foam sapiens event. Where a bunch of us get together and we start talking about the show and the things that we like from the show. It'd be great chance for me to meet some you listeners. And maybe we'll even do that in fact if you're interested doing that and you're a member of clubhouse I would love to hear more about that. You can actually follow me on clubhouse at petro mcguinness so check me out patrick mcguinness and i just like like the fact that you get groups of people together and there are some really interesting people. Obviously the musk's of the world now those types come on. That's great too. But i i was on a A bunch of conversations about dating or about social life for about politics and people. I never heard of were getting up and talking pretty honestly and sometimes saying some crazy things. I was like ward. You said that. While but i just think it's a great way to learn about topics that you may not have exposure to and frankly i was looking to a conversation about race and that's a conversation that i really wanted to hear and i don't have all the time with with certain people in so hearing about Concepts of racial equity and and in from people who are living Living lives are affected by racism for me was super education. I valued being able to hear that. So i think there's a lot of value for people when they listen on clubhouse but let's move onto number two hot tag number two. It is super super time. Consuming i mean you get on clubhouse and then you like fourteen hours later when you get off because your phone is dying. You're like oh my god like what time go i. I wonder if people maybe just put it on in the background while they're doing other things but who is just. It just sucks up a lot of time. And i have a good friend who's been doing a benz on there and she was telling me her experiences like yeah. I love doing it. But frankly i you know i i. It's like start things. Go for three hours. So you start at nine o'clock and suddenly midnight and you're sorta like gosh. What are the time go and so it does require a ton of time and that's an interesting thing because obviously during a pandemic people have time to spare and so it's just a great way to kill time but what's going to happen when people are busy again. Are they gonna wanna be clubhouse. That is a mystery. We don't know what's going to happen. But i do think that the time sort of element. It's going to have to change because people cannot devote three hours for conversation Every week or every night or however frequently you're on it. And i think maybe after the pandemic will see that those conversations will get a little shorter. That's what i would predict but we will see when that happens.

Mark McGuinness | Thriving as a Creative in the 21st Century

"Mystical creative. Thanks so much for taking the time to join us thank you. It's lovely to be. Yeah it is my pleasure to have you here. So i've actually known about your work for quite some time. I remember often reading your blog posts on a copy. Blogger thinking yeah. I love everything this guy has to say. Because it's so practical. Which i think finding that sort of blend between practicality and creativity is something that a lot of people overlook But before we get into all of that I wanna start asking where were you born and raised. And what impacted that end up having on the choices that you've made throughout your life in your career. Well actually. i was born. Just down the road from where. I live elvin bristol in south west of the uk. And i was. I was born in bath by any lift in. This area is about three. And then we moved to north devon which is even further south and west and rural. I'm so if you can picture a very green and lush an wet and rainy and hilly part of the world with lovely beaches. That's the environment. Where i grew up set was certainly not as the center of things. Even for brew england In terms of the impact. That had i guess. Maybe i mean i thought about this brady until you ask me but maybe there's always a sense of in these out of the way places that you know. We're not quite what we're outsiders. When not quite at the center of things we're not the mainstream And actually come to think of it. It was a real leap for me two years later. Make the move to london. Because i had this idea that i was. I was not going to go to london and some wind decided a stupid mental schal put in my own way So yeah i think lots of great things about growing up in a rural outweigh place. Lots of nature tattoos. The uk poet laureate live just down the road from us. I never met him. But some of his poetry describes in particular book will more town describes the landscape. I grew up in almost supernatural vividly. Remember reading that book in thinking. Well that's that's just literally just down the road from us that whole landscape and that was one of the he was one of the first public sira who inspired me to start writing poetry. So it's interesting you talk about being sort of outside. In on the fringes it makes me think of a cr- isaka the investor who basically when he started is capital instead of setting up shop in silicon valley. He set up shop three and a half hours away from silicon valley. Despite being let google. And i remember him saying something. Along the lines of united paraphrasing here that that gave him a real edge in terms of how he chose investments because he said you know if i knew that somebody was willing to drive three hours to come and pitch me to invest in their company. Those were going to move very serious people In it also kind of kept him out of the echo chamber of being in silicon valley where everybody was talking about the same things and and wonder. Do you feel that gave you an advantage in any way at all in that sense to you to stand out with your own work. I like to think so Yeah i certainly think it gives you a different perspective on things because maybe if you have grown up at the sentra things. It's easy not to see the bubble. Whereas i was always very much aware that i was coming in from the outside Another westcountry it Well cues wasn't westcountry back. Thomas hardy was certainly a westcountry poet and he was used to he very much had the site as take on things and apparently even when he was at dinner parties he would imagine that he was a ghost and he had died and he had come back to haunt these people and he said not gave him a very unusual perspective on the conversation which i think helped his novel writing. So so yeah. There's always been that sense of you know there is another world to the one that we're looking at and there's a wide frame to this

"Strict. It's lights out at ten o'clock every night and waking up at six o'clock every morning more or less we cancer is a little bit of leeway. But i try not to sort of changed the times too much and it works because it's just really helps you get you sleep by contract so it is really Making sure that if turned off your tech at least an hour to bedtime because you need that wind downtown at time to relax before bedtime because your brain just nissan to relax so working at your desk and go okay right. I'm tired of aetna that you need so is really important. You wind damn for bedtime number one thing. Oh right well yes. There's a few things that i could definitely improve on. I don't know. I'm not getting to bed at ten o'clock but is it. Would that eight hour window. Does it matter what time that window starts. Is it that thing about. I think we always told you know. He's better to sleep before midnight than after midnight. But if it's eight thousand matter which eight hours says well it really depends on what they call. You is your is your crow types whether or not. You're an early laaksonen early morning person. All whether or not your night owl or your something in between that is a book and it's much shelf in his called the power of when by michael michael somebody and he talks about You know so Locks or als anymore so you are a lions dolphins wolves and bears. So there's like four different ones and it's really where you get your Wake up early in the morning. You're gonna pay more energized fussing wanting to do certain tasks and things like that. And then you're gonna be so tired too early evening so you don't really want to be going to bed at midnight. So is all about working with your energy is the great books i recommend getting cable. What would a payroll tax holiday look like?

"Begin this work week with business owners and accountants and economists and people who are working in this economy trying to figure out what exactly president trump did to this economy this weekend. You some things one executive order and three memoranda after negotiations on another. Plan on Capitol Hill collapsed that much. You know whether the president can actually do most of what he did depends on who you talk to. So rather than engage in that particular back and forth, we'll focus today here on the thing he did that he can do deferring collection of payroll taxes specifically putting on hold the collection of taxes on the employee portion of social security taxes six point two percent per paycheck if you're curious. Starts September. The first ends at New Year's only for people making less than about one hundred, thousand dollars a year that much is what we know. Now. What's IT GONNA mean. Here's marketplace's Mitchell Hartman. The committee for a Responsible Federal Budget Wades through complicated tax proposals and regulations all the time but President Miami McGuinness says the White House's memorandum on deferring payroll tax obligations leaves her with West Mark Mar starting with this one happens come January when employee payroll taxes that weren't collected come do nobody knows how the repayment part will have to restructure it's going to. Complicate the life of employers. Tremendously. If they have to be responsible for making sure that money gets paid back and small business tax advisor Barbara Weltman says this payroll tax holiday could change. So right now we're talking about deferral meaning you don't pay now you pay later the president has instructed the Treasury. Secretary to explore options including legislation to forgive those payroll taxes altogether. Pete Iceberg at payroll processor ADP says, it's going to be really complicated for employers to alter payroll tax collection media year for only some employees based on a salary threshold cramming changes of this magnitude normally require like six months to do. So it can be done sort of an emergency basis but maybe problematic he says employers could be liable for not withholding enough tax and underpaying the Treasury Randy dellwo owns a business that makes scientific instruments in Bend Oregon he talked to his ten employees at Zoom meeting this morning and. The consensus among our employees is that everyone would rather not defer their payroll taxes. For one thing, they would need to save the money so that they'd have it available to pay back at the end of the year the committee for a responsible federal budget estimates temporary payroll tax deferment could leave us workers with as much as one hundred, billion dollars of extra pay through December. But if a lot of businesses and employees followed the lead of Randy Woes Company, the impact will be more muted.

Ted Robinson: What Does Tennis Look Like When It Returns?

"I talk with Ted Robinson. He has podcast for Youtube. And I said you know what? Let's just talk between ourselves all. Take the audio you take the audio. We could both use it for our own purposes. So this is a fun discussion. You know. Ted Of course from his longtime working tennis on. Nbc USA Tennis Channel often alongside. John McEnroe great friend of the sport. Great broadcaster journalist the sport little backstory about ten years. Ago Ted Rope me into joining him on a segment. We call passing shots for tennis channel. Then Nathan tennis gentle. This essentially is my intro to Tennis on TV. Luckily he covered for my for my amateur habits. We have revised passing shots. Hopefully it's a little better than it was in in two thousand eight or whatever when we debuted this. But this is ted in T- Ten and I are talking here and it's a number of tennis topics. Ted is in northern California. I am hold up on the East Coast. We Talk About Tennis. We asked the question. Does this break benefit anyone? What is tennis? Look like when we return. Is there such a thing normalcy? What is the role of society in a pandemic where we didn't go that far but A lot of fun tennis talk with Ted Robinson and here. We are all right. Let's so we're GONNA try to keep this mayor John. I had the one of those people from the very beginning when the rolling gap. So the ED T. said we're moving. I was my first reaction. Was that's awesome. Somebody is actually taking a proactive step to give something positive. I understand the means. Were not necessarily the best the end though. I think it was well worth it. Yeah I'm Kinda with you. I mean this is one of the four pillars of the sport. And everybody's saying well. There was a breach of etiquette. What about the communication? Could you imagine what would have happened if the F. T. had gone through these channels and asked all of the events that it conflicted with if they might be okay there would be threats of Litigation? There would be board meetings. There would be conference calls. They just said you know what? We're the big dog. We're putting up fifty million dollars in prizemoney. Two hundred fifty six players are going to get fifty grand. If they don't win a point we think the players are gonNA play. Here's our date deal with it and I get it. I don't think this was particularly healthy to tennis in the long term. I understand why people are upset but also I understand from their perspective. They're one of the four biggest events and they've got a right to wield a little bit of power. Well he means we're great we also though. I think we've all been around the French Roland Garros and Fritz Federation enough to know. They NECESSARILY CARE. They just do what they want to understand that that people's feelings of these are extraordinary times. They they do what they do and they do it more so when they have whatever how many hundreds of million dollars of debt service on on a new roof and they do it when they don't have insurance unlike Wimbledon where they don't get any sort of recompense if they don't hold the event I get it I mean we we can talk about Means versus ends and we can talk about process versus outcome. But I understand why did with did. I reminded I say this to you. I think you've read the story for the years. That and it was the early twenty tens I forget which year but Joe Vision. Doll ended up playing the final into Monday. So on Friday of that final weekend it was about six hundred percent chance of rain on Sunday. And you saw that was probably gonna be joking reaching the dollar. Appoint where you thought they could easily take five hours to play so NBC sort of gently a little bit of my father with our great phrase. John McGuinness producer Think about bumping up the star time because they start at three basically three ten I ball which gives you six hours to play five hours a grueling larger fair and maybe WANNA bump it up and started a couple of hours of REC- hits rain delay. No we cannot interfere with lunch so many of the high end sponsors spend any they promote the final day lunch for your day higher very highly successful shafts planks was menus. We do not wrestlers lunch. I always joke that the media Cafeteria Roland. Garros has its paige day and they have a wine steward and they have different chief selection of in your Houston media dieting. Usually being you know you're you're eating soup with their hands in the you know the meadowlands. If the media dining has their own pyeho chef you can only imagine the dining options for the people that have Spent tens of thousands of dollars for the courtside seats but no lunches sacred which is also the review. No this lunches. That's also why they say I can't believe this it's a grand slam. Semifinal in the stands are only half packed those tickets have been sold and those people are on the ground. They just have a fork in one hand in a night and the other and they'll get to the tennis when they finish their last declare and of course. I joke final. They ended up getting burned by the way the Dow Stock Dazzling. It's not play that day but the referee to stop late Dawson. I'm out and in cost everybody in the cost us a lot of money to pay for everybody's flies to change in extra day but across the federation allowed light right to reopen the grounds the next day to two thousand one. Wimbledon I was told was one of the pats at the club. Now getting certainly they can absorb this. There's a million ounce to real the Nicole on Monday with zero revenue coming in to play raft refereed. Amici's explain what's interesting about all this including this whole discussion we've been having about closed-door events where you just hold the events for for TV and not for fans in the stands this has really been an interesting referendum on how much do these events and these leagues Value TV and media. How much do they value sponsors? How much they value common fans. And how much do they value the sweets? And if appeasing the guys who are buying your sweets me more than TV. I I can see why they would renew it the next thing. I mean what's interesting? I this is other rumor so I WANNA informal setting and I hope this won't be used against the the rumor I've heard a few times now. Is that the US Open. A really are hell bent on playing the event this year. They've even look into alternative dates in one of the big holdups is they've got to do right by. Espn AND IS ESPN want the US Open? Deep in the fall when they have all their college football. They've got Monday night football they don't And I think the. Usda has got to figure out. How much do they want to put on this event in how much they willing to do it even if it means pissing off their biggest TV partners you? John that's by next passing shot and the point is you just touched on. I think every sport is going through this. How do we come back? I think it's imperative for chance to come back with competition as soon as they can't sake safely's the obvious caveat here but safely meaning there may not be for a very limited fans but competition. And I'm coming this John Lewis standpoint of players ranked and we can all week each throw a dart and say seventy five hundred below. I know you've already touched on this on. Tv lied about this but those players and by the way there is sorting teams physios trainers administrators the Chiro bars. The administrators of the tourists broadcast entities around the world. All sorts of lamb chops alive. And I stayed. It's imperative for tennis when safe to have competition even if it means competition with limited X. over to play devil's advocate there. I mean I I I agree with you but the one thing I've heard is is the counter to that is look. You're talking about athletes from all over the world from different countries with different health. Standards you're talking about T as you say teams and Physios and journalists and tournaments to have an even if you have a closed door scenario and even if you don't have doubles juniors you're still talking about hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people walking around the grounds given what we know about these spread rates and given what we know about how many fatalities result from these rates. If they're a thousand people at a major which is a conservative. That's pretty low estimate given their two hundred fifty six players in the May draw a thousand people. You're still probably likely to have a few fatalities Do we do. We risk that it. What do we do for a global sport where Western Europe might be on the man but other parts of the world might be behind? Do we say we're GONNA have the US Open but if you're from India Iran I'm just making up countries but if you're from five countries you can't play. Is that fair to still hold an event L. Rasiah and I think this is what's going on hold is this is my dead and company. Has FOR WITH BILL? Walton took me to see the dead New Year's Eve Senator San Francisco and I think everybody should have to add. Lorries is what I'm saying. I think whenever we come at everybody's GonNa be tested right and you're gonNA have to have a badge. The crucial so. I think that's GonNa be the answer at how this plays out. I'm researcher Techni- Martha but I believe that's how it's going after before you have any competition whether it's domestic or international status everybody's GonNa have to have some badges

"Mike Kids love it to welcome back to this week's tank Cypress podcast with me stale as t t legend road rage and all around. Good Guy John McGuinness and you talked to a mckerrow they are always a controversial thing that Miko with the race being declared after one lap with initially we. We're told told. The by the organizers wouldn't be declared the result and then a couple of hours later they said well actually part the rules to declare result. What were the raiders? So because 'cause we were also told Israelis didn't have any new tires. Well what was essentially a to be honest. I was out of the race. I had A. We had a problem with that Jacuzzi. Not which is so unfortunate. Botton advice limits debates all year round a problem but you know the rest stops and then it restarted started and then again after one. Lap routes routes so nailed delving into His Boa Yoga cost alive. I stopped in the Organiz first light. Paul Butler was like that's it and unrest about you know Blah Blah Blah and kicking off about people Crushing all out. Good to him. You know what I mean. He was in the right place at right time. You know that that's the way it goes. I mean he can. We're pulling these air inlet to bother budget when Asahi's pictures on social media get him having a good life in Thailand and so I don't I don't get bothered him for too long. I mean there's LA sponsors out there and I'm Jim Grand Nola casinos and there was a lot of dignitaries in in the Paddock and stuff on my zone. So lots going away and fall off to get nothing. How could we get flat money? Commissioner and Mrs Kennedy Time For the first time in twenty one years six hundred quit for a flat so thought top six got the flight when he got a Penny Eddie. It's a walkie weird place super important for the cause and I mean he said you've got to be milia perfect. You've got to be absolutely you money. ANYTIME DOC Holliday's everybody's over and you know jet lag and humid such a difficult little tricky little place and again me being selfish a little bit about released anything loss fall up so you know. I did all the free. Practice to qualify in the warm-up sudden you know for me again big box take I wasn't there I was fast. Kamal maybe all indoors here there and everywhere from me. So we'll see what we have is the one thing I wanted wanted to actually ask about because you mentioned that you did go really well indicating that the caddied it seems to me. We know how good the Baker Scott Reading when ESP BE. Bautisa was going to win motivate before he had a few crashes. It's been a good bake in Elizabeth. It'd be a really really good package on the roads of you had any discussions with Paul Board for next year. You live in the mountain deals Macao. The Bar is unbelievable. You know where they'll fault jeans down the one chase gets locked in Macau you see me me and Birdie. I've a a great relationship. It's a very very different relationship. I think too many rides zoo of inform. You know they've come in as as professional in for me. He gave me my break in nineteen ninety-six a long long time ago so we always have this. We've had our squabbles and revived. You know my favorite Gemma. I T T was running for Paul. I was joey teammate. In the Bill Talbot Joey one three. And it's funny. I bet that he's ruining the team he can't. I'm going so good. He's team again. I'll be forty eight enjoy. One three is quite cool little story but you know I have to respect gone has got a okay round table with them and see see what he wants to. Do you know if he doesn't want to go race in then that's fine you know. I'll shake his unto. Move on if you just want to go racine and we have two things have to change. She knows but you know I'm going to be on the great. I think I'm going to have another bride account you know. I didn't want to finish engine ball snap to it's not wanted you know. Jacuzzi will be good. I mean I was a little bit. Do a little bit artistry. Leave when I got there but the bite preparations beautiful you've got it doesn't want for anything. Got New parts on May eight the engines certain mileage and the changed and I just on it felt right it felt like a pauperising by Avi Foale. Definitely suit the this show. The road sick is a bit more revie and stuff at the twin Matt via bit. I'm liable twenties quite difficult thing out of success on them. We thirty in in two thousand and three in the Muslim of the finished in second and third difficult yearbook history. Would you got your own so you know let. Let's go around the table with Paul Stewart and Pulpwood Jakarta as well as there's quite a bit of input from Bologna Him. You know there's a fair amount of CER- factory support and I suppose it'd be one thing as well too catty seemed quite keen to relaid dominate the road with that V. For the thing they're gonNa there's rumors that they might do to Suzuka next year in t mobile big box for them as well. So would that be as Paul said. Look you know go below near willing to put up a fancy. Would that be something that would sway you even away from any other potential I. I'd like to say yes. I'd I'd like to think if that you know have to the minds of the cut it would involve a noah like when betty gets his. He does it right. You know. There's been no banal worrying about engines worrying about this and worrying about Latin. It'll just be a proper package. And you know the crew chief. The Phil Ball was in the young seventy birdied. The gun just works you know that they will be the t t for the right reasons. You know because of the passion for racing passionately going there Hodhod Blue High tuned athletes and and no interference amaze garbage -als ride ride ride ride in honor of looked at noon. Maybe do not to Kathy Cook as well which that would line the planet soap even better. You know what I mean so I get that the COTY field. Hopefully to free people will get behind me but like I say it's fair to comment too much you know it's I'm probably not the minute I've got Nelson dull. So it's it's hard you know you know I mean is this is true of the guys. Arkansas knock on the door and get into that stage now. I can just see that paper. Lost a bit lost a bed not faith but just think which is good for the motivation for me. You know I got multifaceted. You know think new anymore. Wouldn't they know the sites. Just it's I'm Gonna I'm Ben Across rose really you know would would want to go you know and I know what I WANNA do. I WANNA ride bike. I want to enjoy an adequate in maybe buyout with a job. You know book at the minute just a bit messy. I wrote that Bill Suzuki Dali Mall Dalian complete grassroots. I'm each track. Having no national race in the middle of it Kupa was there and another kid from BSEC stock. In that. And I loved it. I gone when it's fossil avid homed around. They're still getting the leg over the by you know stotts the dust the killer the killer man. I also play the Satan on both sides of the fence. You got left to prove now must be larger still light putting the lid on doing bit just faintly one thing. You were quite excited. But it was not not but that's not going to happen in the next couple of years is thought so not because I'm from is obviously so Mesa response that some people think well it was kind of inevitable but you must be quite gutted. Because Museum Project College aid was a really really cool project. I'm glad you said that there's a lot of people sailed. You've lost your chance of a win round. I was really me off. You know because they don't ride themselves you want to try and get them run on twenty nine hours a quarter till I'm sound bloody out. You know the the goals of movie now them. They're getting serious. I didn't understand seventy thirty six miles an hour through the speed trap. You know anybody who selects mouth of winning on the military and then I am just genuinely you know results ALZ regarding results. I'm just I'm genuinely upset. 'cause I really really enjoyed working with the Japanese and and Miss Humble himself on riding the bike and seeing what seem same excited to see what they've done and they've just took it from one hundred and two mile an hour to two hundred and twenty two with Michael so Michael Roddy is only any by eight seconds on the podium. Forty seven podium. You know the white leathers and just cool about different different than it. You know the day's visualize things that they're way way way it for Electric Bicycle Mount five ten years they need something else like BMC Asaki. Somebody's again conditions and just revenue generation themselves. They what two hundred and twenty two wounded. Melania back in the day the did you know that there's nobody else challenging him and I find it really sad. You know nothing hundred percents. I'm not really sure which team is but one that David Todd road and it was the late daily Matheson's buying Some university might be nothing bothers. Show about that clever boys and I. I laughed at little bit. You know when daily podium. I shook US up there. And you know just under twenty daily didn't it and that's been knowable login by just looks great respect to them you know. They haven't just got that finesse. Lot Mugano money factor in what they could do. They would be on it so does time while the Goldmans and not any Bam bracken to to drive you for a little bit. She's another option whether we like it coming. All the thing is where you see with more as well. Those bakes There on the sort of almost the same level as Murugan. You'd think if they could get a couple more Megan Megan what three weeks on t t you got. Energy Nausea to put a couple of the MUI race based on their give a back into university. Teams you would have a more competitive. Seems it seems like there was almost an easy effects for it but perhaps just wasn't really a much push forward that's all it needs a couple of months. Explainer 142: Who are the DUP?

"Democratic Unionist Party was founded in Northern Ireland in the nineteen seventies against a backdrop of extreme political violence. The loyalist groups finder the firebrand Reverend in paisley at Longview, the campaign for greater rights for Northern Ireland's Catholic population is a free night did island. It was an idea. He hated and evaluate never to share power with. Heard tells. God. Say. Problem. Indeed, it would be fair to say that the DP renamed for the progressive politics. They've consistently oppose the European Union gay rights and the Boertien. Also, the only party who refused to sign up to this story. Good Friday agreement in one thousand nine hundred eight which ended thirty years of sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland. The principle of consent is absolute and is throughout the agreement. And the breakthrough is that that is now accepted by all north and south the DP eventually reneged on its promise never share power with Republicans in two thousand seven the party, which was still led by impatiently from the coalition with equally hotline Republicans shin. Fain paisley became Northern Ireland's first minister and the former array commander Martin McGuinness became his deputy. They were nicknamed the chuckle brothers. Have you told me some time ago? But I have is standing here to take this office. I would have been totally on the leaving. It's strange that the two men who did so much petuous the long conflict able to work together for peace in the late two years the pace mcginnis and no longer alive and power-sharing has once more which impasse in Northern Ireland. The DP is now in the hands of the former solicitor and lifelong unionist all in foster and the days when we were plagued by terrorism and decisions affecting our fits and our futures were taken far away. I could not have dreamt that I would be in this position today is it any wonder that in politics either. Leave nothing is impossible the United Kingdom's lash gem election proved that nothing is impossible. The Prime Minister Theresa may made a calamitous decision to hold them when she didn't have to and in short lost majority. It means she never relies on the support of the DP ten members of parliament to properly the government. The prime minister spoken with me this morning, and we will enter discussions with the conservatives to explore. It may be possible to bring stability turn issue at this time of great challenge. Thank you very much to numerous in this statement to say that the deal between MRIs May's conservative party and all in forces DP is problematic. It's cool to confidence and supply agreement. It means that the P gives the Tories votes in return for extra funding for Northern Ireland. For the party's db. Awesome. Hey to proceed over Brexit. Indeed, Theresa May's draft agreement with the European Union is unacceptable to the DP. Northern Ireland alone would align with the block single-market, meaning new regulate trade barriers between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This is a red line for the DP you claim it could damage the integrity of the union with the rest of the U K. We have to do something to show our displeasure what we did tonight with we abstained the number of votes, we voted with report at one vote. None of them have financial consequences, by the way. But all of them were designed to send a political message to the government. Look, we've got an agreement with you. You've got to keep your side of the bargain, otherwise feel obliged and that was the DP semi Wilson. Explain why his party failed to back the UK government on recent vote in Westminster. It could be a sign of wish to come from. Mrs may her own party is at best lukewarm on Brexit plans. And with the support of the deal. Ep. There is a real risk. She could be forced from power just months before the UK set to leave the European Union. For multiple twenty four. I'm Reese, James.

"On the case of the golden state killer an arrest made last night i talk a little bit about this case i'd like to make just a couple preliminary comments when i became sheriff from sacramento in two thousand and ten there were very few outstanding cases that drew the passion and the interest and the dog determination to solve as east area rapist the sheriff that i took over from sheriff john mcguinness who's here with us today told me about the importance of it i don't know that i fully appreciated at that time but i can tell you without exception weekly sometimes more telephone calls or emails to this day from former employees former detectives community members from all over this country that believe that they know or at least have some information on who the east area rapist was committed to do everything that i could to solve it had a lot of conversations early on with district attorney shubert about how we can do it and those discussions really touched the passion of both of us to solve this case both of us committed the best and the brightest are handpicked folks to oversee the resolution of this case and gave virtually unlimited resources and freedom to pursue whatever leads technology currently existed so that i can tell you that over the last few days as information started to point towards this individual we started since avalance we're able to get some discarded dna and we were able to confirm what we thought we already knew that we had our man yesterday afternoon in a perfectly executed arrest my detectives arrested james joseph di angelo seventy two years old living in citrus heights i can tell you that although it was dna ultimately that led us down the right road there are a lot of places that road could have led i don't want to underscore i can't underscore enough the absolute human factor the dogged determination of not only the detectives working on this case but the passion of the district attorney myself the community and the victim's all too often we forget about talking about the victims and today we at least brought the first step towards closure for those victims of these horrendous crimes

"Outright it and then he went on to say it never some very find people marking on friday night i don't know why but isn't a fair to say isn't it fair to say that he was trying to make the point that there were people who were and i'm hearing from every day this week the don't like the idea of these statues being removed met him right and the a janitor unite problem 9'0 trap and ended in my problem is that e e i totally understand the argument for not removing the ethical made that argument myself but not live at the rally that happened on friday night with all the unite the right and it was a white you probably this rally organized that what you probably resort and you're not eat or outright eggers part of the right it even now anger of the proud boy gap mcguinness with a guy with them and currently we gather that i won't be associated with that i don't think that mar a day that every at i don't think anyone of can harp was marked with people who are walking around with keep torture she hasn't shouting you shall not should not replace that and growing of hitler so it like in a lot of people and i've had some great great perspective from people saying listen if you did have a good faith intention you get there and once you show up and you see some of the people with some of the signs you go home that's it i'm not going to do and in my problem is that the outright is really a quake of crafting movement i mean i know them intimately i was number one arguing last year um the the outright now what people think it it you cannot get people like muslims or think it's funny to put up pictures emperor trumpers that these are people who actually believe in what you're probably and the and if you're labelling yourself all right you don't believe that and you're not actually outright when trump get wet one of the things that the outright has sought to you it's a pretend that they are something that.

"Gaining it back in the more i would take my power back more my health with mcguinness stabilized still i'm still balancing things out in but i feel good every day the okay so we wanna know how you got from exhaustion literally giving all your power away hard to get up hard to be on staging thinking that you're gonna leave the industry and you just gonna sing for family and friends collector guitar whenever to literally restoring your emotional spiritual and therefore mental health how that actually happen how did you trends form yourself one of the things i prayed about when i when you invited me to be here was that i would be able to just tell the truth is clear as i could and it's gonna take me a second to work out the words for for what i want to say because i i still have that thinking me that wants to give the right answer in media but matic and be on tv and other stuff you're supposed to be doing he there's always at other part whereas just was true who i i'm happy 'cause this is really the first time gonna be able to say something like this on television which is why i love the show i even really for me the the foundation of my life is my spiritual life in so what i do in what i did too to begin to find the answers of what i needed to do to restore my life was pray in meditate.

"Now if we roll forward a few years northern ireland today has a power sharing government obt one that's carney suspended with the parties trying to find agreement on a new administration but at the time of your interview john hume the leader of the moderate nationalist s t o p was in talks with republicans on the shape of a possible settlement and as we can again here from your interview mcguinness explicitly rules out any form of power sharing with union exists it cleared it will only the he and local fina of little dog that there's a fair day upload early should proceed in the future because we attach my the what they're looking for a difficult discussions which are taking place as some form of a joint sovereignty type situation look you can continue to the nicest as being a step into the united ire i think that anything short of that will be senior him just walked by to the administration starlet because any establishment of the walk over storm inevitably because of the jerry mother state and sat up of the six countries inevitably means that the unions will the the possible georgio reason bodies and just control did in one of the six jimmy why do you think he changed his mind what brought that about to think well i think he was a pragmatism as well as an idea this and he got to the realization that in military terms it was radius stalemate i mean neither side was winning and you got the same message coming indeed from the british army from british intelligence in fact intelligence as we know.

"Having as he push it martin mcguinness literally in my sights and he could have shot him and there was strictly under orders not to shoot mata mcguinness and it was obvious to me that the british government had identified martin mcguinness as someone that had to survive in order to take the whole process forward now as we now know from various accounts automate guinness was the back channel all part of the back channel between the british government and the ira during these years but let's hear another clip from your interview way he talks about the reasons why at that time he didn't think a ceasefire was even a useful approach to settling the problem la la la his but don't believe anything at all i think the only thing he the consolidation of peripheral in a flirt ceasefire who will be the end of an effect of credible opposition to remain don't forget that the republican movement all been involved in nineteen seventy two in a situation with the british go on the latest gently rutley high yet another sedation which minerals police turned up to a ceasefire seduced by believes to seventy two considerations huddle correctly by the republican movement at was right to talk stunned linked or people should all this war to talk said sedation seventy four seventy five was partly held by the movement because of a home state of the situation on the result of them the the double asian author who campus.
