Yeah this fixtures crystallized over the years that. I'm not so sure i'd like what an geez man you league compliment took a lot of pride in his in his own game and completely in a way that if it wasn't up to the standard. "It's like it's a fit and not every good. Football coach is a good fit for every opening. I i mean some things better than another and adagio just as fish out of water coming here i think and i think steve or tony. Alford steve me His wife's for grad. He played running back for sonny lubick. He's now he's been national crew to the year for notre dame and ohio state. He's it's just head coach state. His wife's four wants to come home and they wanna make their home here. You're not looking at stairs. Step kind of job through him He wanted his where likes them and coaching career. I think he's the right plus. Let's not be blind here. Colo state as a miserable miserable history hiring minority coaches miserable. They had one ritchie. Mckay was a basketball coach for a couple of years other than that. They haven't had a minority head coach. And i would check every box. That'd be the right guy to run this program. You know and i don't even know if i wanna point dad i that you pointed the right guy for the right job and i think regardless of of skin color there. He was that and and you look across the country. There's a lot of schools that have that same issue. Absolutely no question about that. But i mean you you very guy that checks every box. Yeah and tony did i You're you're absolutely right. Well i guess see. She's perspective but this is where i go back to the whole self-awareness thing They didn't want another first time head coach. Well who are you. I mean you are kind of school. That should have a first time head coach right. You hired mike bobo. First time head coach jim. Mcelwain hadn't been a head coach. I mean that's who you you're going to get..

"Revolution and counterculture right now. My guest is media researcher and author fred turner so by the by the eighties and into the nineties. We start to see this earlier. Techno utopianism kind of morph into this embrace of the new economy the post industrial economy and this belief that we would all be cyber nomads and liberated infonauts which seems kind of naive from the perspective. Today's gig economy and freelance hustle. So what happened. How did we get to that space sort of in the late eighties early nineties well. In the mid eighties the generation that had tried to create the communist in the sixties and seventies was looking for work. They were in their mid thirties late thirties. The communist collapse the had collapsed. The sixties was over and we were in the reagan era and people needed work at a lot of those folks were here in california where the computing industry was and they went to work in the computer industry and they began to reimagined the computers systems. They were interacting with as the tools. They'd always need it in the counterculture but not had so stewart brand founder of the of the police catalog. we'll go on to create something called the holder's electronic link which was an early virtual community and we got his first. Mac macintosh computer. He declared that it was the new. Lsd that's pretty interesting right. If a computer is the new lsd. Then it's going to become the connection device. The connection technology the thing that builds the society that we wanted to build on the culture but failed to i wanna flag also in the political economy piece that the people who are in this conversation are largely white largely male members of a university educated. Or could be class. This is not a working class conversation. This is an upper-class conversation happening with people with university degrees that becomes important because as we move forward in time the hope of building these interconnected communities provides i think a set of logics and a set of economic techniques that will ultimately become the engines of things like social media. And it's a longer story. It's a forty year story. But it's where it happens and it's one of the reasons that troughton mcelwain has to write a book about the forgotten black computer programmers. Yeah so as we can think of that. Iconic nineteen eighty-four ad for apple computers that links computers to freethinking rebellion.

"Structures not just broken but that they collapse in on people and that the weak are not sheltered and that the poor not cared for and that Far more people are not given the luxury of invulnerability and canton won't and like in all these forms of time like we. We like. have this feeling like we're seeing things as they really are. Like that. Feeling when you count your kids eyelashes you think like i see the whole world and just right now but the truth is lake. All of them are true. And we'd toggle between them all the time and so like we just can't live in any one version for too long frankly without not really seeing like the scope of what. The wholeness of our lives require know. I think it's important because oftentimes you know We in america living that hellenic time line that just keeps going forward and most of the world has lived on that hebrew. Kind of like circular timeline. Where the past bleeds into the future. The future is in the present and you mentioned like climate change. The future is like literally giving us the warning and the president and comes to systemic inequality white supremacy and racism. We're not done with the past in america. You know an mcelwain both in a microwave. And i think also when it comes to the audits of your life. How can you not regret life. That's a life. Unexamined past is there but then we also have to live right for me. It's like okay. Being mindful in the present but know that this moment will pass. And i will be now living in the future i think as a person of faith in god i believe in god. I feel like you know people who who who do not believe that's fine. I've never been a proselytizer I've always actually the token muslim. But i think there's something about the spiritual traditions and philosophic conditions that are rooted in this understanding of how you know we are just sands time and things are connected and this to show pass and we shall pass with it but you still have to find meaning in this whatever this is this absurd life and i ask you this and i bring this all up because with everything you've said as a person who has heard some bad news today. A person who six years on with cancer as persons still believes in god. You describe yourself as an incurable optimist. Yeah how do you reconcile that. How do you explain that to someone who sitting there going. Yeah oh can you still be a person of faith an incurable optimist with all this. Yeah yeah because there was a version of it. That was just not true. That i was really hooked on. Which was i had had really thought that optimism was the same thing as certainty. As like if. I just pick right if i just if i just like. I'm gonna fix this. And then of course being incurable has been like living with the things that i just didn't choose. I would not have picked this body. I would not have picked being on my on my ninth belly button at this point surgeries and i just Yeah i had confused it with certainty. And i think now to me. The beauty of the circularity that you're describing. I think about being an incurable optimist. As being a a really fundamentally a story about hope and like it's hope for me it's hope for you. That like hope is a story about all of us that god puts in the future like ever before us and always with us always behind us but moves in that kind of like beautiful way that we will someday be wrapped up in a story about love that is beyond time and beyond are dumb bodies and beyond and beyond. Here's and that will be really beautiful. But in the meantime it was always about all of us the like we belong to each other in a way that makes hope not really just about whether i get a cure and and my life works out. It's about whether we're like you feel yourself as.

Mcilvaine died that day in new york city at the age of twenty six. He was like reaching out insane. I want to show you my office and was specifically onto the because it was the last time i saw. He told this story to atlantic staff writer jennifer senior. Who wrote about the mcilveen for the atlantic magazine. How did this story come into your life. Well i mean the most obvious way it came into my life is that i knew bobby mcilvaine. He was my brother's roommate in college. He was my brother's roommate in new york city. When they were young then starting out. I would visit my brother at princeton. Bobby would be there and he would. Just be ridiculously precocious charming. He wanted to be a writer. But one of the things that bob learned early in his life in publishing is that a lot of people in publishing came from upper middle class families. They had cushions of money beneath their toes. And bobby's family didn't have that kind of money and bobby knew. He wanted to make a living and so he went into corporate. Pr after two years of being in book publishing. And that's how bobby ended up working for merrill lynch and going to work conference on one of the top floors of the north building of the world trade center on the morning of september eleventh. I went down had coffee and was going over my work like many americans on that morning. Bobby's mom. Helen was starting workday as a teacher and they had the tv set on in every classroom. And i my knees buckled and light. I had to be helped. Bobby's dad bob senior. Also a teacher at the time was also at work. It was on tv. I call home. Of course i try to bobby. We get colon now. So i was visiting them amid then after work and they were gotta report. Jeff realized bobby worked in the building above them. Basically so i call. I was like yo. "Say able to just end the damage trying to understand more about how you're gonna continue to hit rate on your platform and just offer more value. You have lots of publications but just what's the future look like. Yeah definitely will continue to have more more conversations with more mall publications so the goal is to really significantly expand a publishing. Pull especially across the us. So that's gonna be something that you're gonna say if you are on the platform you'll say over the coming months that that'd be more and more big names joining the platform. We're also currently testing out some new products. That will add even further scaled. Kind of what. We're doing and but still really tightly connected to a mission to help revolutionize the way that brands and publishes connect and we'll also start to quite lighter in this year start look at other international markets to expand into as well. So we're looking at other european markets as well as doing work across asia as well so for us it's every mcelwain into so far has been a success and there's definitely huge demand for this product. When i talked to global teams at stake directly to brands. I always say i've never had positively around a product which is cool definitely. Doesn't feel like you kind of selling anything. It feels like you're really solving a problem. Which is why we try to. So yes. i'd say growing spanning the publishing pull buildings from the products that helped out to be more scale to the offering then yeah kind of further internationalization is but what the real focus is perfect. So chris we are near in the end of the show for today but Do you have any insights or any takeaways that you would like to leave their listeners today. So yeah i'd say that making your brand famous is one of the biggest challenges for any data say brand and it has positive flow and effects to everything else that you do. And that's exactly what link be is trying to help to brands all over the world..

"Odds aren't very good. Look what happened to jim mcelwain. Jim mcelwain could've stayed at sea issue and probably continued to to be pretty good in the conference and mcelwain probably could have been a sonny lubick could have owned. The town had his own stay. Cows any business deals he wanted to do. He could do him. He would run it but then he goes to florida. He's not he's unsuccessful. And the next thing you know he's just a guy now. He's not a big time coach. He's not a town hero. So that is the tough thing you got to look at. You know if life could be really good here. Coach medved could run things and be a legend in fort for years to come hell man. He could really help grow basketball. That's what our goal in the show. Is we wanna grow. We want to help grow the issue and see you and unc. We grow the fan base. We want more people to go to these games to get engaged to prove that there's dickinson broncos state but there's more to it than that you've you've heard niko medved on the show. You followed him which your gut tell you. See fort collins guy for life or is because he's gonna get offers. He's been there three years. Winning percentage has gone from like thirty percent. Sixty percent seventy percent want wanna say yes. Because i mean he's probably already had some offer studies. Robert turn probably has had some offers. Yes i would imagine. he's had a few offers. How big of offers are those where they from the the right school was the minnesota thing ever really into consideration. I don't know the answer to that. We thought that might be something He doesn't strike me as jim. Mcelwain though jim mcelwain you could hear it in his voice that if something were to come along he begun. Bobo bobo bobo would have been successful like really successful. Would he would have stayed no. He's a south guy. Yeah he wants he want. He hasn't wanted to doesn't want to be the head coach and broncos country. He was to go somewhere. Where it's all about. I mean he's he was an offensive coordinator for For for georgia right wasn't he and then you know he went right back down to south carolina as the offensive coordinator. There there for second. I mean that that's what this guy that's where he belongs. Adagio is he one of those guys where it's like. I i did my time already at that level. Now i'm cool here. Could be because he's older than sixty. Yeah so i mean. I could see that. I laid out foundation. Stay here for. If i'm successful for five years outside another contract coaching in my seventies and then retire maybe a lot of people come here. Love it yeah Medved i could go both ways on that. I think you know he loves it he he does. He loves it here. He's an amazing guys his beloved by everybody that meets him. The school rolls out the red carpet for this guy. "The program continuing our conversation with kevin lytle kevin. Let's break down this schedule here. The rams they they seem like they've got a decent opportunity to start the season off. You know relatively strong. I think you know. I'm looking at this and i mean do we look at a to and to start for the rams as a win or do you think they can take out a t mike vanderbilt. Let's start first with the first game on september. Third you're right. It's an interesting. I four non conference play in september third of for a lot. Reasons is a really really big key. first off. It's the first game with fans that canvas stadium in two years so That end self makes it exciting. It's a friday night game. Which i don't love because obviously we have high school football. Gone way it will be fun. it's a tricky game south because they within the sds title game this spring actually They're expected to be very good again. issue has a few years ago. They lost illinois state. They got with by North dakota state several years ago. Jim mcelwain first year. I believe it was So they've had some losses fcf themes they need to be on high alert for that one But if you they obviously need they'll get win they're losing. Fcf seem to start. The year would not be good. Yeah that'll be an interesting. And and hopefully pretty fun night with again fans back tailgating back and all that type of stuff and unfortunately for colorado state i think the only way they grabbing headlines. We've got unc and see you play in that same night. That's ed mccaffrey. Taken carl l. down in boulder. I think the only way card a state grabs any headlines on that. Monday is if they lose to south dakota state And and it's kind of lose. Lose their you win you boom out and people really It's gonna probably be under the radar and then if you lose the only way you're going to dominate the headlines. Yeah i agree with that. It's of those you know they signed this deal. You know. several years ago obviously wouldn't have known that south dakota state was going to be one of the top teams that signed free. I think you're right. I mean you win and it's cool. You be enough. The that's all you're suppose they're lose and obviously oh. Gosh you you lost. Nfc team. so i think you're right but You know you play you play the games you have to win the game. I couldn't agree more so than he got vanderbilt next week Is that a game that colorado state could win winnable. Vanderbilt is is a mess of a program you know. They've been pretty bad for a while. new coaching staff Team teams. Don't kim the travel this far. That's quite a travel bit for them But it's so far from a gimme. It's still young guys that were good enough to be recruit and sec school. It is the first year coach. So you never know what kind of bounce you'll get from that but again. I think that's the game. That's the issue you know. If you're the rams you should look at that and say hey we have this. You know four at the team at home We should beat them. So you think official prediction time. So you think they started the season off to know. I am not sure on that. I think that's because they game is a has a lot of alarm bells. I honestly feel more confident about the issues. Maybe not more about evenly confident in the chances of being vanderbilt. Spn and south dakota state which says a lot about a lot of those program. all three of those programs. I think yeah. There's no doubt about that. Then they got toledo and iowa to end the non conference schedule. What about those two games. Yeah and i think the the universe issue. Obviously i i y you know. That's a blowout i. I don't see how you can hang if i were. I guess the only good thing is. I was not generally a super high scoring team. So maybe you know instead of you may kind of linger around. I don't see any way. Cfc's truly got a chance to win iowa and then lead really tough game. They're they're pretty trinity. Pick I in the mac as a a g five team. That cav really good year. I think they're fixed second Today the mac preseason poll So toledo is gonna be a tough game I think that one if you will probably be. I don't know maybe a seven to ten point underdog. I would guess all right kevin. Hey we're up against the man. I appreciate it. We'll be back hour number two. It's no code. Al presented by the nine agencies on northern cowardice voice. You know i've i've heard secondhand that he's had with other people privately just about long-term hopes of living here Again that doesn't mean he won't leave but also means down like you know some of the football coaches that have been here He doesn't have a foot out the door just trying to succeed to get himself. Yell launched outta here so yeah absolutely. It's going to always be a topic of conversation but hey if was good enough that a big time power five is calling nico bet that means things are going really really well so the thing i always say is don't worry about you can't control it. I enjoy the success if it does come at that level because you know that's a tough thing to do it is and as we continue our conversation here with kevin lionel out of the colorado and i'm going to go back to bobo here. Eight always felt like bobo was was just trying to prove himself to get to that next job. You know like you said it doesn't really feel like that with medved which i think that will when that day does come in. Hopefully it's not for a while but hopefully we had the success that we saw last year because last year's team was very fun to watch their back this year. That rams fans no matter what are going to really enjoy having looking back and saying look. Michael medved was a great guy. We appreciate what he did. And it's on to the next one for him. Obviously we didn't see that with bo-bo. Yeah i mean again. Part of it is just football. You can't there's there's kind of a ceiling as like but yeah. Jim mcelwain mike. Bobo certainly came to see us you with the intention of winning and launching themselves up and again there's nothing really wrong with that. That's the system that you know college. Football is set up. Med vet is doing everything. Fan could wind. I mean it's a young you know while they're now pre experienced but the likable entertaining team. That obviously wins You know the kids it's a. It's a fun group to be around. It's a bunch of likable players. So yeah see a few fans. I can't wait for me to be reopened. Because it's such a bummer. That fans can be there for this really impressive last season. So i'm i'm thinking that that place is going to be jumping this year as it should be about. Be law fun to get back to. I think it absolutely will be and should be. I mean hell. I'm excited for it. I'm going to have to to get a couple of the media. Passes that we get to go over there and enjoy because just sitting there watching them even on the on the mountain west network and and you're seeing the energy with this team and i think that had to.

Trump Administration Pushes Back Against Claims of Deplorable Conditions for Migrant Kids

Vatican Rejects Notion That Gender Identity Can Be Fluid
"Today. The Catholic church officially took a stance on gender identity. The Vatican issued a document that rejects the notion of gender fluidity, it's titled male and female, he created them, and it's meant to provide guidance for Catholic educators, as well as parents. I asked Josh mcelwee with the national Catholic reporter to tell us what's in the document. It takes a really critical view towards the modern idea that the gender identity might exist on a spectrum. It says people who propagate that idea are seeking to annihilate the concept of nature. Did even questions the kind of the perspective or the intentions of transgender people saying there, meaning to be provocative against traditional frameworks. It's quite blunt quite critical and quite interesting in this era of pope Francis, who's much more known for a more dialogical viewpoint. Speaking of pope Francis. Is this something he endorsed and signed onto? No. It's quite interesting document is signed by the two Italian to lead. This office of advocate the congregation for Catholic education, normally, document of this type which comes from a very high level at the Vatican would at least towards the end mentioned that the pope in presented with the document and heaven opportunity to comment or opportunity to review. This document does not say that. I don't think it's possible to poke didn't see the document, but it is possible that he wasn't quite an agreement or didn't think that he wanted his name in it and gives us the backdrop for this. Why was this released now? It happens also to be pride month. It's very unclear. The document itself is dated in February. So it's being released several months after it was signed. And dated, I don't know that the Vatican would know enough to know that this is pride month, and that's fairly big deal. Obviously, this is something the church's been thinking about its noticed that, especially in the western world is a new way of thinking about gender identity, and the pope himself has spoken about gender identity and the need to accompany people in there. Walks of life. He said, you can't judge ho- classes of people all at once that you need to look at individual cases. And so this document obviously, there's something quite different. So pope Francis, has has seemed to be more kind of open to a different ways of assessing gender identity and sexuality. We'll the pope has been quite clear about Catholic, teaching in this area in that church believes that humans are born male and female, but the pope has been open to the fact that, you know, people have different experiences in two thousand sixteen pope even spoke about meeting with Spanish transgender man at the Vatican, and talking to that person walking with them and understanding where they were coming from something that this document doesn't do. It doesn't mention any discussions with transgender, or LGBT people. In fact, it only sites in its footnotes church teachings and former people documents. So it doesn't appear that there was an effort to meet people, where they are to understand, kind of what's going on in the hearts of people. This report was issued in geared toward Catholic educators and Catholic educational institutions is it supposed to be used as a textbook as a reference to answer questions. I mean what how is it supposed to be used? I think it's a bit like a series of guidelines or a way to have a discussion. It's a bit unclear how it will be used from here. How that Diallo could go forward when the Vatican has used these very critical terms of the people trying to dialogue with Josh mcelwain is the Vatican correspondent for the national Catholic reporter. He's been speaking to us from Rome. Thanks a lot. Josh? Thank
Nielsen Resignation Could Affect Trump Immigration Policies
"Before her resignation on Sunday. There were bumps in the road between there for the relationship between Nielsen and President Trump now looking forward, what are the challenges ahead for President Trump's immigration policies. That's a good question at this stage. He's named the individual. He wants to be the acting secretary. The customs and border protection Commissioner Kevin mcelwain. But there's there's some obstacles there, including whether or not he can actually take that post because of some rules regarding sort of order of ascension in who gets to be what when department has leaves. But there's there's more upheaval in turmoil to to come because congress has to act at least, according to the the administration at a number of immigration experts. I've spoken to that. Really? There's not a lot of good options. In a lot of the things that the administration has tried have been knocked down in court family separation right now, they're they're sending some migrants, including families back to Mexico to wait for their immigration proceedings to be completed in the US and have them with Mexico. That's being litigated as we speak and a ruling on that case could come any day now so lots of upheaval lots of turmoil yet to come and congress has yet to. Oppress any significant interest in overhauling the laws. There's lots of talk from lots of members of congress on both sides about something needs to be done. It we should do this or that. But but very little has actually come to fruition by beer legal. I mean, nothing there's been no change immigration law in any significant manner really since the Clinton administration, President Trump had also signalled that he wanted to go in a tougher direction. What can you tell us about Kevin Macalinsan? So Kevin McLean is a career customer. Order protection. Official. He started with the agency back when it was US customs under the department of treasury shortly after the September eleven terrorist attacks he wanted to join the FBI fire to that. In fact, filled out the allegation the night of September eleventh, and then was recruited to US customs and helped oversee the transition to the department of homeland security after it was created in two thousand three or actually stood up. I can't say that my experience with him. Suggests that he's tougher per se. He's he's got a lot of obstacles in his way. Not the least of which are all these court rulings and a lack of action from congress. Remember that CB p which includes the border patrol has been getting a lot of funding over the last two decades since release the September eleventh terrorist attacks the agency has bolstered its ranks border patrol in Mazembe improvements at the ports of entry. They say they're still a long way to go. But they have more than double the agency since two thousand one really in the midst of the latter half of the Bush administration is when all that hiring happened, but they're still down a number of agents about two thousand agents, I believe in hoping to hire even more beyond just filling its its ranks as it sits now and then on the customs and border protection side, the guys at the ports of entry lots of room, they say for more hiring and more facilities. And so on you know, they're having to take from those. Positions right now, they're having to move customs agents customs officers rather who normally work at the port of entry to the border to help the border patrol with processing. So he's got a lot of obstacles in his way. It's it's a daunting task for anyone, but he certainly comes with with experience from the border. And I think what which are seeing is, you know, the president has decided that the physical border is is going to be the spotlight for his immigration policy right now, everything he's doing at least from afar seems to be pointing the spotlight directly at the border,
