REIGNY DAY FINALE

"All right big announcement. I told you there is an announcement. Maybe you heard. Maybe it would hurt. Because i think this probably only place. I'm going to say it. This is going to be the last rainy day podcast because i am abandoning zach. I'm abandoning the rain. And i'm leaving. I have taken a job In detroit or for the red wings and tigers. I won't be broadcasting games. I'm hoping to maybe keep doing that. But let's not get another personal stuff. Because i think it's better to burn out than fade away. Neil young one said. And so i know what you're wondering. Now who's gonna fill in In join zack. As he continues up these pains. And i don't know i don't know I don't know what will happen. What are you thinking right now. I mean i mean how could we possibly replace you It's been raining in ontario for the last year and a half. It's finally going to be sunny day without the rainy day. Podcast starting in twenty twenty one So bittersweet you know we had a great run. Here was excited to keep it going. But i'm looking forward to some some time away from the from the microphone busy good. This became a simon and garfunkel situation. And yes. I am. The paul simon in this group and will likely go on to be wildly successful whereas zach will have mrs robinson and that's about it as as far as his hits go. I'm moving on out. I will get into a few things in a sack. But i another thing. You're thinking as who's going to call the ring games. And i think it's gotta be used back and i know everyone's like well that can't call the games second kagame. He's never called a hockey game before bites little. Do you know zach as a matter of one time hopped on the mike in called. Play by play for the terreaux fire. Department verse d. n. y. Game and i have a couple of clips from that game to an active. Going gonna put these on. I'm going to put him on to just give you a feel for what's coming out the bye-bye now you guys may have you thinking. Wow we liked listening again. It was pretty okay on the games but it is. I think going to add a level of excitement. So here's just one clip. That i'll play now. Sixteen seconds left on the clock on panthers on. This is the most exhilarating game i've seen in my life. The sixteen bazan italians are going berserk. We had seven seven game. Twelve point four on the clock here at citizens business bank arena. What a saturday afternoon. Matinee team home crowd atmosphere s really pushed antero odd. Ny sdn y they. They might be a little bit rattled hearing this timid visiting atmosphere. S some there. I mean you future in this. I mean i'm used to calling games with sixteen or less people at them. So that's that's me up well to do this during a pandemic it's So that's one thing in my favor Like color man from that game is a one time rainy day. Podcast guest mas- mcelroy. I'm sure he would up and leave his current job with vegas come back and be the rain kellerman unpaid of course as you can tell by his performance in that obviously wouldn't pay him to do color I think he would probably leave in a heartbeat to that. So the tandems there. I mean the the obvious answers in place with myself on play by play nat color. So we'll see you know maybe Maybe i do have a few. Maybe though You know some other. Nhl teams here that call on this rainy day. Podcast they want me to call. Nhl games and the rain are still looking. I don't know you leave as well. Yeah maybe you know that could volt. Nbc job doc. Emrick guy retired. Maybe they hear this. They just kind of me up to that job So something to think about moving forward. So let's wrap up here. i do you know. There's a lot of people that i like. That i've said to so i'm not gonna do it here But this podcast has been an absolute blast. And so i do want to thank everyone who has lessons This is been a ton of fun of once. We got into the rhythm of it. And i think we did a good thing here with this. I'm really gonna miss call in the ring games like calling the game. Not being able to do that consistently is very bitter sweet. I guess it's just bitter. It's not sweet leaving bittersweet but calling. The game's not not being able to do that next year. It's tough But the just gonna be here. And i'm not going to get into because it's really not any your business you listeners. But i But i am going to miss all of you. I love doing this. Podcast and i love working for the rain and you never know. Maybe i'll see again. Maybe i won't But i just thank you for listening and we have had a lot of fun doing this. Podcast i think zach. Have you know. I have a lot of funded. Didn't really know what to expect when a lot better than it did. In our trial run in two thousand eighteen nineteen so is it was really cool to kind of see what it turned into to be able to have some really cool guests on some of our our players our top prospects you know sharing some stories and having fun. I thought that we took it in our own direction. Didn't care what anyone else thought. And i liked that. We had the chance to do that. Yeah i agree so again. Thank you to all of you. Thank you to our supporters of his reign staff year. And darren glenn we're We're big supporters and in the as well mike and kelly cheesman was big friend of the program we We always appreciated that support. But we're going to put this thing to bed. The rainy day podcast is gonna go out of the world just like it came in which is very mysteriously and very auspiciously. So that's how that's how we're gonna leave this zach good luck. I'm sure you'll work your release another month but i. I don't know maybe leave. Maybe won't be able to do it without me. I have kind of been You've been riding my coattails this organization for long enough. Maybe the time is up sharply in the local paper to try and replace that how we hire down these days just like a like a wanted like wanted middle aged five gaster with sas. I think you should open auditions open. Auditions zach a week long. Tweet year your audition at rain. Insider and i will be happy to listen to all audition tapes. That are tweeted to me. I think that's a great idea. Degraded him all right everyone. It has been a blast. We'll talk to you later. Maybe probably not for now is just goodbye.

"You can't completely remove him from their offense of plan but what you can do. Is that when he does split out and the traditional wide receiver position. You can have your best cover guy against his best cover guy. There's not a lot of six-foot-plus corners that are as physical. As patrick ser tan to be able to entertain that matchup pits will likely still win a majority of those or maybe half of those but most times winning one hundred percent of those. And that's i think an advantage for alabama that they do have the personnel on the perimeter to be able to match up like that but where it becomes problematic is if he lines up in a traditional tight end spot. At the end. Of the line of scrimmage then do you make the decision to put a safety there and try to cover them or do you cover them with a corner. Who's not gonna be as good and run support. That's the cat and mouse battle. Go on between. Nick sabin and dan mullen throughout the course of the game. I you understand kala trash guy. I was watching. I think it was the tendency game and somebody said to me. This guy cal. Trask isn't that good. I heard you talk about how great he is. I mean there were two or three series in a row Florida pundit and then the next year is boom boom. But i mean it was just like like surgical strikes can you. Can you explain. Kyle tries to those of us who who have never been there before. Well he is a guy that gets yards and numbers and touchdowns in bunches. He's a streaky player. But most of the time he's on. I think that's that's a credit to his developed. Remember this guy is still relatively young in his development. I know he's a senior but he didn't play at all in high school for the most part outside of blow outs and last year use thrust into the position so he's really had only one off season to be a starting quarterback and that was this past off season so there are moments in which he is a little bit like this but when he's like this he's as good as anybody in college football. He's very accurate. He's a good enough athlete and a willing runner and tough front or two. That's willing to pick up difficult yards for his team and he knows where to go with the football more often than not so i really liked. Kyle trust a lot of things. Excellent players a wonderful story as far as physical skill set and nfl potential. You know there's still some areas in which he needs to grow. But i do think he is a perfect situation for dan mullen to be able to create this offense around where he knows exactly what he's going to get from his quarterback and he could try to scheme up the opposition both in the formations that they use the run elements that they use and the matchups that they can create with kyle pits etc. Areas tony in on the other side. there's always conversation here from callers about todd grantham. She's still there. But the florida defense versus all the the weapons on the alabama side. If you're there scheming other than a few prayers and maybe buying a lottery ticket what do you do. I think you have to take place. I mean alabama's a team that's thrived by pushing the ball down the field. They're not a team. That looks at a five yard completion. Six yard completion. Say that's a positive play. No the only thing. That's a positive play for. Alabama is a thirty five yard touchdown or more. You know that's that's kind of where they're at at this moment. So i if i were grant grantham it would be the antithesis of what i've been over the course of my career over my career. I've always been about dictating. And i wanna blitz and i want to put pressure on the opposing quarterback and i wanna make the opposing quarterback feel the pain of getting hit and hit and hit over the course of the game. But i don't think against alabama you wanna put those guys on islands because if you hit devante smith on a slant route. That's a pretty easy. Throw for a quarterback in the balls. Bang bang mac jones hands. Well he could take it the distance as can the other guys that they have in the offense as well so fire them. I would do my best to play very conservatively. And then when i got to the red zone i would drop eight in as best they can and do the best. I can against the run. But i would not give up big place. I would make alabama kill me by thousand. Paper cuts meaning five yard. Six yard four yard three yard. I would allow those type of plays methodically down the field and see if they're patient enough to move down the field that way because is not an offense that has been had had to rely on patients this year. They are one play big play machine. And that's i think been something that has been so much fun to watch. But if they are forced to play methodically can they do it. And that's a question that i think has yet to be answered. But they'll probably have their opportunity on saturday against really well coached team in so many different aspects of the game. Greg mcelroy with a greg. Before you go i to get your thoughts on the story of the week off the field and that's been the angst and anxiety about the college football playoff committee. Michael was here last night. The commissioner of the american just unloaded on the systems. Saying we're better off just going back to the. Bcs where are you. I think he has a point. And it's been really frustrating. This year to watch teams be evaluated by different metrics and the committee. At this point while i still think they have remarkable credibility. There's no one on the committee that's actively trying to influence the end result. I genuinely believe that. But right. now we're trying to evaluate the teams based on different aspects of the evaluation process. Some teams were evaluating on a full body of work. Some teams after saturday's outcomes will evaluate on whether or not they won a conference championship. Some teams were looking at well. They've really finished strong bounce back after some really bad performances that team being iowa state or oklahoma or even to a certain extent georgia. But what i've yet to find out is why the committee is not rewarding teams for having played an entire schedule for instance. I have the utmost respect for ohio state and it's not their fault that the big ten decided to shut things down at the beginning of august as a result they played only five games. They'll have their six game on saturday. But they should be penalized for having not put themselves at risk as many times says other teams and if for whatever reason notre dame's to beat clemson on saturday or not gonna put clemson in the playoff because they had really good recruiting rankings. The last few years in because they pass the test no they played their way out and they had two opportunities to beat notre dame and they weren't able to do it so those that have said well even if they lose still get in. How can i support that team. That's not getting enough love. Then i think mike arrest goes one hundred percent onto something is the cincinnati bearcats. Is the team paul. That has dominated everybody on their schedule and i think frankly if they played ohio state schedule..

"Of the whole there in. I know we freed willi. But how do we rescue. Mike i mean how do you think that's gonna turn out. I don't know. I am pretty concerned about the direction of that program and i think i think change was necessary and i think my doorbell is a good coach. I think he's had a really bad year. But you know we rescue him. I think better. I think you better stay the course with nordell too. Many changes have already occurred. A bill is in st louis. Hey bill hey paul first time caller Really loving with coach drinking dune at the news. The do i agree and I wanted to just throw a proposal for college football playoff. i'd like the expand. The twelve teams You'd have the power five conferences. Each conference would send their divisional winners. So you'd have ten teams from the power five and then you'd have to at large and then the college football playoff committee could Decide which four teams get a first round bye. So you'd have eight teams playing in the first round you'd have to at large teams and i think the whole country could be invested in the in the playoffs. Because you would you'd have to pack twelve teams you'd have to big ten teams and you know need have have to american athletic conference team so good well let me Let let me let me offer this bill. The the problem with that. And i think this is the reason why we haven't seen expansion so far if you do that what happens to championships saturday. What happens to the sec. What happens to the big ten championship. I mean those games are meaningless. Aren't they yeah. I i agree. That is an issue. And i think that The only thing that i would hope that money would talk in that if you had Two teams going from your conference. She definitely new two teams. Were i agree. But i guess i'm just saying that i appreciate bill to call. Commissioners always referenced championship. These are important games. And you'll hear that tomorrow from commissioner sankey and other commissioners around the country who will speak and they're also part television contracts the new deal between excuse me The deal moving the espn package. The cbs package away from espn involves the conference championship game. There's a specific value placed on that game because it's it's a standalone which tomorrow saturday's game between alabama and florida very likely will be the most watched college football game of the year to date. Know the the playoff games obviously will surpass that. And maybe the rosebowl maybe not but but those games are big. And you just can't say well if you already have two teams going to the playoff or likely those games are not going to be very compelling. There's almost no reason to have them. Thank you for the call appreciate that. David is calling next to. Hey david you're on the air. Hi pal Just out of curiosity in your type. When they're considering a kevin steele. I would like to think about joe brady. That was at lsu. Well i mean. Joe brady you carolina panthers this year which have had a pretty bad season. I wouldn't say it's all joe. Brady's fault might be the quarterbacks problem. But yeah i mean do you just hand the keys to a job like auburn to to someone who's never been a head coach that that really becomes the issue and i mean auburn's obviously struggle development of quarterback. We all know what you did with jer. Borough are eight brent venables from yeah i. I'm not saying they're bad. Selections under simply saying that knowing the makeup of auburn. I think they feel like they can probably do better. Hey we're up against a break. We're going to come back with more greg mcelroy. Rejoin us in a few minutes. We'll talk more about the heisman in the final hour and we'll keep talking about the auburn coaching situation as well stick around. You're listening to the paul finebaum. Show podcast welcome back. We were hearing coach. Saban and mullen Getting ready for the weekend in atlanta and who better to talk to them. Somebody's plate and a few of these games. Greg matthews joining us greg. Thank you for the time Let's get right to this matchup and as you look at film and you don't really need to look film because you've done these games and i've seen these teams but how. Where do you begin in trying to break down the matchups in terms of of how you think ultimately will fall. Well paul it's always. It's an sec championship game and forever for the test time. It's always been decided. Along the line of scrimmage. That's who the sec has always been about. And it's funny to me now that we have officially made the change to the league of aerial attacks and these two teams obviously best exemplified. That used to be all. About the line of scrimmage the toughness the physicality the down in down i grind that it is trying to work against scc deepens obviously. It's longer the case. You have to elite caliber quarterbacks. In kyle trask amac jones have in my opinion the best player in college football and davante smith the most difficult in college football in kyle hits for florida. So it's really going to be about which offense executes better through the year and which defense might be able to get a timely interception or two over the course of the game but it's going to be a fascinating matchup and one that we've obviously had circled since the off season you mentioned pitch and i'm really interested in there because you know we all have heard and seen this alabama defense grow up and mature but everyone says the same thing Pitches a match up nightmare. What what what can you do. Well you got to be willing to put a corner against him which is a problem and most corners are not willing to match up against a tight end like this because kyle pits is also a guy that can block you and if you put a corner in the spot that is normally occupied by a safety. Then you're gonna have problems in the run game but alabama has a corner. Patrick thirteen that has the length to be able to keep up to a certain extent. I don't think you can completely eliminate kyle pits his involvement in the game. He's just too dynamic too long. He's too good he really is. You can't completely remove him from their offense of plan but what you can do. Is that when he does split out and the traditional wide receiver position. You can have your best.

"Is no longer regional. We don't need regional representation within the voter pool. Like just because i live in birmingham and i represent a voter here in the southern united states. Like no like if you cover the sport and you cover the sport nationally. You should have a vote because you're seeing players in every nook and cranny of the country so that's part of my issue. It's become a quarterback centric award. There's never any players. Get any consideration. I saw with my own. Two eyes roquan. Smith be the best player in college football. A couple years ago didn't even make it to new york. Kuna williams was the most dominant player i saw in college. Football couple of years ago didn't even make it to new york. There have been several examples of the players that had been left off. Because all we care about their stats. And who's the best player on the best team or you know. Not even the best player. Who's the most recognizable player on the best teams. I think the heisman voting process has become ridiculous. So hopefully it's something. We can reevaluate in the future because the award has lost a little credibility of late because of ridiculousness every guards to who has votes and who doesn't pay for your in legitimate heartache. And and i remember greg when i was a columnist. Talk show host in alabama. That was always a pressure to put whatever alabama or auburn player on your list. Because that's what fans wanted. But that's not what it's about and you know you're one hundred percent correct. I i will gladly give my ballot and let somebody that knows what. They're talking about. Vote but you have to keep the regionalism out of it you absolutely and it's one thing to vote for your guy. It's another thing to vote against someone else by by by saying were griff did. That's and that's the thing paul but you you follow college. Football twenty four seven three sixty five. I work for sirius. Xm and there are hosts on sirius. Xm kit into the individual names. There are host the quite literally do one interview a year on college football and have a vote. How does that make sense. Do you think people are. Why do you think pack tall players never win the award because the east coast though those voters on the east coast. They're not staying up to watch what's going on pac twelve after dark. When if you have a heisman vote it is your responsibility. It is your obligation to the integrity of the award to watch every player in college. Football that you can that to me. I think it goes without saying. And i'm not discounting myself as national like no like. I have an affinity for the sec. Of course i do. I have an affinity for players that the position that i played quarterback like i have such an affinity for that but i recognize greatness and other places i think we all should if we are going to carry the burden of having heisman vote we should acknowledge players and other places that play different positions that are among the most outstanding. That's the ultimate task heisman. Voter who is the most outstanding player in collegiate football and if you are unable or unwilling to do that he shouldn't have a vote. Well greg thank you as always. We'll see next week. Have a great thanksgiving be safe and we will talk to them. Happy thanksgiving paul. Have a great week man. Thank you very much greg mcelroy. A buddy martin. Killed mike griffith few weeks ago and greg mcelroy. Just a few a few minutes ago. And greg mccoy just buried him. So it's over we don't you can send your your donations to whatever. His favorite charity was or is. I guess we'll take a break met. What a what a crazy couple of minutes here on the program we'll take a break And more of your calls on this thanksgiving eve when we return. It's your apartment speaking. And i need some favors. When you're seeing in the shower. Just try going up a key. You're trying to be an alto when really. You're a soprano. Oh and if you could bundle your renters and car insurance with geico it's easy to do online and we could save money and then when you read your murder mysteries at night. Could you.

"Back here on a very busy day before thanksgiving greg mcelroy joining us and so much to talk about Greg thank you for being here and we want to start with the news. Not far from where you are with nick. Saban testing positive. It seems like we went through this a couple of weeks ago. But this time it's real your reaction and what do you know well with you paul. I don't know anything beyond what's already been reported. And i also know in the fact that they've gone through this song and dance before the players are already very comfortable with steve sarkisian leading practice. So anyone assuming we're going to have a less than prepared alabama team on saturday. I think is going to be mistaken. I also know to like we've talked about the last time we went through. This is that you know. Is it really going to have that much of an impact on a teams prep the readiness to play. Are they really going to have their motivation. Impact the iron bowl is on the line. So i can't envision a scenario in which we will get anything less than alabama's best effort knowing who the opponent is if opponent was someone that they might often overlook then. Yeah maybe we would have a less than stellar effort. But given the fact that it's auburn on the other side of the field alabama. Play very well. And they have a guy. Steve sarkisian with head coaching experience. And we'll be calling the plays and we'll be a direct connection to make jones and that offense too so i don't expect it to have that much of an impact. Auburn wins the game. It's because they earn it. And because alabama potentially allow that to happen. Not because nick sabin was missing in action because of covid positive test. You know about the sabin. Jim impact and influence on the sidelines. You were the starting quarterback there for a couple years but for those of us who were just watching people and i know what you've said and sark. There's definitely has the experience. But what does alabama miss by nick. Sabin not being down there. So the biggest thing paul i would say is de escalating situations for instance. He kind of has a tendency to fire you up and yellow chew. And that's what's necessary but that won't be necessary because they're not gonna start slow. They're not gonna start in a lull because it's it's auburn like if it were against say tennis or let's say let's use kentucky. Last week wasn't a great start by alabama. Honestly be their offensively or defensively like the first quarter was kind of not so great kentucky made a few mistakes so that's where saving can rattle the cage a little bit and kind of fire you up but on the other side. This is actually something that could potentially arise on saturday. As he will de escalate situations for instance if a player gets beat and he's very upset because of a play call or something along the lines of that or if two players are jawing at each other that's where he intervenes so he has a tendency to just try to keep you on an even keel. If you're down here he'll bring you up by yelling screaming. Go getting getting wild. If you're up here he'll try to bring you down being calm saying hey let's play the next play etc so he just wants his team to be a steady as humanly possible. So we'll miss that invisible hand either picking the team up or pushing them down. But like i said. I mean this is a team that has good senior leadership good veteran presence on both sides the football and i wouldn't expect anything less than their best regardless of whether or not their head coaches is not going to be on the sideline. You're familiar with hot takes and outrageous statements. So i don't want to shock you and i recount. What happened here about thirty minutes ago. Mike griffiths from dog nation was here. I asked him about kyle. Trask i said i'd put him number one on my list for heisman pretty much. Everybody else in the country He he said he found the contrast for heisman. Conversation to be cute and when i pushed him he said if i had to do it i would. And he's a heisman voter. He would rank trask fourth or fifth on his list. He gave a lot more explanation. Which i won't bore you with. But i'm curious because i've had conversation view about contrast possible that somebody could see cal. Trask in in that light. You lose credibility. I mean remind me again what what platform he works for over the first four letters of the form. Wg so i do think good everything that he might might take what he has to say with a grain of salt. And that's the exact problem with the heisman trophy right. There is that you allow fan boy participation in the voter pool there should be no more than one. Hundred voters on the heisman trophy and honestly. That's being generous part of the reason. Why even say that should be one. Hundred is because there's so many former winners that obviously want to cast their vote by the way their votes should be weighted pretty heavily because they have the exclusive fraternity and they should have say in who gets administered every single year but the fact that we have nine hundred voters and guys like the aforementioned writer or columnist whoever it is. I'm not sure. I know mike. By the way is a writer. Does talk shows all that other stuff that he does all kinds of stuff but he does so while looking through the lens of georgia colored glasses. But it's not exclusive to him. I'm not pointing him out. Tell me what's to stop a. Let's just say a local radio show hosts in anderson south carolina from pudding. Trevor lawrence won travesty onto dj. Who younger la three. What's to stop them from doing that. How about the guy. that's you know. And south bend. Indiana that wants to put chip kelly as you know coach of the year like we should not have fan. Boy partisan participation in the heisman trophy vote. And it's it's not exclusive to mike. It's not exclusive to any corner of the country..

"Trip to the airport or home or visit relatives or putting us on at home and you may have missed a big story from tulsa earlier today. Nick sabin has tested positive for covid. And we'll miss saturday's game and unlike the last time where he wasn't showing any symptoms and ultimately led to three straight Negative tests which allowed him to coach into georgia game. This is not going quite as well. He says he doing okay but he is showing symptoms according to release from the team. Doctor update that situation as we move throughout the program. Greg mcelroy shortly more of your calls right now and richard is up next. Hey richard Good afternoon to you. Can you hear me. Yes i can thank you. Yeah hey paul thanks for taking my call first of all Which you and your family are very happy thanksgiving and thank you for all you do I just wanna make a couple of quick comment then. I like the guy that was going on about college. Trask four or five What what is he thinking. Just a comment. I really need a response because we all know cal. Trask is a One or two without question you know. I believe he is that good and just What could be more humorous than the guy that was calling in that referenced. Nick sabin and the word scared and i agree Just cannot even that. I'm gonna old miss fan I have enjoyed ole miss football. But i can. I can say without doubt that You should have got to respect nick sabin and wishing him a full and speedy recovery. Back to the sideline my question for you. Is you know. I believe coach saving coach from the moon. And do that way. I believe he's that good. And i realize he's not going to be on the sideline do you think it's It can actually be a motivating factor for his for his Young men playing auburn. This weekend you think that's something that they might utilize. What's interesting richard. I mean they went through this before. Remember for the georgia game now. He coached He was cleared that day about the clock in the morning and they played great. A i think they will play well for a lot of reasons. But you know number one. They were pretty familiar with auburn. They did not have a particularly tough game last week. And you know savings working on the auburn game in the off season. I told this story years ago. But i'll tell it again quickly. I was on a plane with him. Once in july. I was doing a story on him for. Espn and he spent the we. We flew from tuscaloosa connecticut. He spent the entire two and a half hour trip looking at the auburn spring game. So don't tell me he doesn't take the game seriously and his players do as well. Yeah i mean. I ask you one other question. I wondered this a long time when a coach is out like he is such a major influence on his team. Then college football and has a solid You know respect from the other from the other side of the field. What exactly does he do. What is saving do in reflect. You know with coaching during a game like this. How does he handle. That was interesting because We interviewed pittman last week. Who was when it was unable to make the trip for the florida game. And he said it was. It was brutal. He sat in his house and watch the game and had a very difficult time because he was out for. Koga dan mullen told us a couple of days earlier he he was out for covert but his team didn't play. He said there's no way. I could have done that. I just to hyper i don. I would think saving right now. I know that. He's prohibited legally from communicating with his program. I wonder how that enforced. Yeah i did not know he. He was prohibited. I did not know that. But you know. I just feel his presence even even from the television. You just know he. His presence is is there he is somewhat coaching different aspects. At least that's what. I feel like paul. Thanks for taking my call and enjoy the thanksgiving. Thank you very much. Richard a pleasure to talk to and by the way there's been a lot of reaction to mike griffiths. We put up a video on twitter for those who may have just gotten on board. I don't often do this. Because reading tweets. Sometimes it can be dangerous to all of our house but but this. This person that i'm going to read is a pretty prominent observer of college football. He's a frequent guest on this program. Speaking of buddy martin who's the publisher. gator bait down in florida. Let me just read you. How buddy reacted moments ago to mike griffiths presentation here on the program. I'll just read it. So i apologize. My grip of dog nation needs a sobriety test after going on the finebaum show and starting his trash task. Excuse me stress campaign comparing him to andre. Ware ranking him. Fourth or fifth in the heisman rice. Obviously he wouldn't would a winning. Qb looks like he covers georgia. There you go. Jeff is up next in columbus ohio. Hello jeff what's going all doing. Great how are you. Hey i told you over a week ago. You need to get buddy martin and might grip of soda butte for radio gold than right. There just proved my point those to go and head to head. You could just sit back and take a that. You know what i mean. that was Pretty remarkable. I mean buddy just dropped the mike at the end of that tweet. Oh yeah hey you're you're wondering about saving to have contact. I think you've probably got three burner phones charging right now. I mean come on. He's going to have contact with the team in all seriousness. I kinda missed the beginning. When this was a now ours ala bama concerned about the contact tracing or whatever. I don't know how a head coach doesn't have contact with the whole team and the whole coaching staff. I mean. has there been any thought about that. Well they said that nobody else has tested positive. Now we had a doctor call in the aftermath of that statement. And he said. I don't know how that's possible and a lot of it depends on when sabin contracted the virus and i don't want to sound like anthony fauci here but it could you know. There is a three to five day window so tested positive today. If you watch the video from saturday night's game he's in everybody's face and i'm just wondering about how all this stuff and by the way if there's any if there's any point practice monday or tuesday where his mask slips down i mean. I'm not trying to be the covert police here but i think i think the next the next cova testing will be interesting. It's also possible. Jeff that so many players on that team have already contracted it that it wouldn't show up but but that's not exactly what contact tracing is. That's a totally different right. That's what i thought i had. I mean i don't care who the head coach is. I mean they're they're they're obviously within quote unquote contact with everybody. Hey another beautiful job by our boy grip i mean. I wish you'd ask you though. Paul one thing if anything about georgia right now cute. I've way he threw out about. Traffic is cute that number nine ranking they got last night i know the first three rounds of the college playoff rankings at all for television and and it has no no bearing at all but if anything is how the hell george their number nine i i i really. Byu at fourteen which is done all it can do. Georgia did not deserve to be number nine. And that's a question. I didn't deci decided not to ask because we just didn't have enough time. I thought was funny. You picked up on this. Did you catch up backhanded. Did he had on florida that they're going to have to go out and get a transfer quarterback next year if they want us to be able to pass the ball. I think you're boiled mike. Then he reds and raised. How great transferred. Jt daniels his. I mean this guy goes all over the map to try to prove a point about his dog this larrea. Hey thank you for the call. I've got an update. And i was trying to get the exact verbiage on this for the doctor. They're called in from virginia so on contact tracing you have to be within six feet for fifteen minutes so as probably not possible at alabama for anybody to do that because save not spending fifteen minutes with anyone but you do have to wait for the next round of testing though so i think the only thing that's going to affect contact tracing the alabama team hopefully But to testing will be eagerly in anxiously anticipate. What what we'll say. Goodbye talk to somebody that knows. That seemed very well here in the next few minutes. Greg and we are back after this. Hey it's your homie. Sorry it's your home. I know you don't like it when i call myself your homemade So.

Saturday at the 2020 Masters

"Saturday at the masters in dustin. Johnson is running away. He carries a four shot lead into the final round sunday. Following a seven under sixty five saturday he was masterful tying jordan speiss fifty four hole record chasing johnson on the leaderboard are sung j. M abraham answer and cameron smith all four shots back while justin thomas and dylan 'fratelli sit five shots back following his round saturday. I called up with dustin johnson. Seven hundred sixty five news. Dustin johnson to sixteen under through three rounds. What did you do well saturday. And what if anything would you like to do. Better sunday I did everything while today. Adrover very nicely head. A bunch of fairways Hit a lot of greens and felt like i. I gave myself good chances on your on almost every hole. and so. that's kind of what you gotta do here. In the conditions. Not a lot of wind you know. Courses is fairly soft so you can be aggressive and Strike in a very nicely today And so you know tomorrow. We'll have to go out and do a lot of the same if i to win. Tied jordan speeds fifty four hole record. What's the balance between staying aggressive and not being dumb Well for me. It all depends on you know. Flag positions numbers Forgot a good number. And and i like the flag is a play aggressive but Like i said the course right now is is very receptive so you know i know the guys behind me are going to be trying to chase down south. You know you can't play you know there's a there's definitely a fine line of being too conservative and too aggressive but you just have to pick and choose my spots second last year. How did that impact your motivation. This time around. I mean yeah it was. I've played well last year. I played while the last couple years so obviously this one tournament that that i definitely want to win and you know. It means a lot to me. A- grew up so close to here and so it is something that i really look forward to until tomorrow is going to be a. It's gonna be a lot of funding. I'm gonna try to enjoy myself as much as i can and Hopefully hopefully outcomes good tomorrow afternoon. You heard dustin johnson say right there how badly he wants to win the masters. It's the dream of every player in the field in this eighty. Four th edition for more analysis on the third round and what to expect sunday. Let's bring in the voice of masters digital jimmy roberts. Dustin carries a four shot lead into sunday following a seven hundred sixty five saturday. He was masterful. Tying jordan speiss fifty four hole record assess his performance on saturday. A great it was basically as good as you could get You know you said it. He tied the fifty four hole scoring record. It is a different time of year. But i don't think it really matters. I mean the thing that sticks out to me is that you know through fifty four holes. He's got two bogeys which is unimaginable. On this golf course and they were in consecutive holes. Fourteen and fifteen in the second round. And when you stop to think about it he bogeyed the second easiest hole on the course which means that by all rights. He should probably expect to birdie the fifteen th hole. You give him two more strokes and he's just farther ahead of the pack. But i will just say this. I was here in nineteen ninety six and i covered that masters where greg norman had six stroke lead and nick faldo came back to win it so i mean this course can do things to you i mean. I think that there were extenuating circumstances that year. Norman had some physical difficulties. That didn't manifest until the final day and faldo played effortlessly. I think he shot sixty seven It's gonna take that for somebody to beat him tomorrow Somebody's going to have to play really really well. And he's going to have to stumble. What is it about this golf. Course that suits his game so well. Well i mean at this point really. He's the number one player in the world and he's as they like to say in europe he's on form so you know. He's a finely tuned engine right now and He's not even close to the red line. So i mean he is just got it all going on right now. I mean he's you know. I always say that you know. These are the best golfers in the world on on a week to week basis. You know you shouldn't be surprised if somebody you've never heard of comes up and wins a tournament because they are all remarkably talented. But he's the best of all of them right now and he is playing really well You know we've talked about this over the last couple of days. He you know he's long and straight which is tough to beat and then a couple of years ago. He decided that in order to get better you had to work on his wedge game so he went and did that he's become a terrific putter and he's completely unflappable. He i think. And i think that's the most important thing i think he's a guy who just does not get undone by much. I just asked him a few moments ago. what's the balance between maintaining the aggression. That got you here without going too far. Yeah i'd i'd be curious to know what he said but in all honesty. I've never seen him loses. Temper made him. I've never seen him hot. I've never seen him running hot. I'd seen him disappointed disappointed. And you're not going to be able to see this on the podcasts. But you know it's just kind of an shucks wish i hadn't tripled that whole crazy when i do. Something you know like that He's really he's a talented man. Who's in stride right now and You know he's done a lot He's one everything but tons of majors. I mean he's tiger tiger woods. He's one in to start his career. He's won thirteen consecutive seasons to start his career. Only tiger woods is done that and he tied him tiger actually one in his first fourteen seasons. But i mean he just consistently wins you know and it's hard to beat talent you know and worth work ethic when you match those two things together. It's very difficult. Let's look at the leaderboard. That is chasing dustin johnson song j. m. abraham answer cameron smith all four shots back. Justin thomas and dylan for tally. Five shots back if you were going to pick one to catch him. I don't think there's any question. The person who watches is Is justin thomas. But the way sunday m is playing and things are different now than they used to be. You know it's been forty one years since a first timer has one here that was fuzzy zeller nineteen seventy-nine. You know i was with the jack nicklaus this morning doing something and He talks. Jack came here and he didn't win for the first five times that he played here. But this is a course more than any other course were experiences necessary. But look you've got answer and in two players who were here for the first time in their you know right nipping at his heels Sebastian munoz too. So i i do think that must not be worth as much as it has been in the past given the level of talent and work of these guys but you know you give me a guy who has the experience and a guy who doesn't of equal talent and at the same spot in their game. I'm gonna take the guy with experience at this place every single time. Rory mcilroy and brooks koepka. Both superstars both at eight. Under after three rounds. How plausible is it that they might contend on sunday. I think it's entirely plausible. I mean i think that you know mcelroy's trending in the right direction after that seventy five in the first round which was disastrous for him. Just can't seem to get out of his own way sometimes but he's got a game. That's ideally suited for this place. He hits it high far and straight. His natural shot is right to left You know he's been number one in the world he's not undone by these big situations. Generally i think he's going to be a very interesting guy to watch tomorrow. But in all honesty there's so much daylight between dustin johnson and the rest of the field at this point and it's not the daylight of four strokes. It's the daylight of four strokes with the number one player on the one side of that daylight. Who's playing well. And i mean. I think it's gonna take dustin johnson shooting seventy two or three tomorrow. I mean i suppose it could happen. You know greg. Norman shot seventy six. Nick faldo shot sixty seven That lead had evaporated by the tenth. Tentpole the eleventh hole So you never know. But i would be. I would be shocked. But i remember being augusta national in in One thousand nine hundred ninety six and remember all the stories that we were doing. And i did a story for. Espn that night. And i said you know it would be shocking if greg norman didn't win but if he doesn't it will be one of the biggest stories and we won't soon forget it and here. We are all these years later. Talking about it at augusta national right now.

"Now, they have very very good parts, but this isn't some of these Alabama teams that would roll three first round picks out on. These are a bunch of draftable guys who are very good but they are not that freaky EST the the nose tackle Jordan Davis probably the best NFL prospect from talking to scouts today and he is a You know he's a a big. Member big, Dexter Williams from Clemson who was sort of like the big run stuffer on those great clemson lines. He's he's a little bit like that, and then they have They have one really really good high end corner. But for the most part is much guys drafted in the in the fourth fifth sixth around what like locale and in the secondary and they just play really well the biggest compliment to George's defense was a an imposing coach who called it The. Jumbo shrimp defense she said it's paradoxical. He said they are aggressive without taking risks which sounds a little bit like jumbo shrimp and that means they get after the quarterback they blitz but they don't hang themselves out to dry and leave them and leave them exposed. Pete Damn on a multitude of subjects can't wait to read that coming out Thursday night the insider's view of this weeks months, years, game of the century all these great to have you on. Thank you very very much. Pete them a Yahoo. Joining US among the very best in the in the industry, we will take a break. Hopefully. There's no more news when we come back but we have a lot to do on the program including Jimbo Fisher. Greg Sankey. Greg mcelroy. We get one more Jimbo to Greg's into to Jimbo's. We will be listening to Paul Finebaum show podcast. We welcome you back and we are glad you are here. And L., let's get back to the calls after a conversation with pizza about the problems. This season Joseph is in Tampa and you're on the Air Joseph. Hi. Paul. How are you today? Joseph I am doing well, thank you very much. Thank you for taking my call and I've got just a couple of quick comments and then a question for you if you don't mind. My comments on this? You've heard all at the start of the season and all during the first three weeks. How good a shape these athletes, young men and young women at Cetera in athletics a all sports are in and they shouldn't be physically affected by the Cova someone, my age or your age or even older. Then you hear. these players are becoming affected. Then you hear what's happening with US f. Lsu and then Vandy Missouri. So. It's kind of impossible. Believe that even the younger athletes are not being affected no matter what security precautions are being taken. Well I question is this. Separate Yourself Paul Finebaum the man from Paul, Finebaum sports broadcaster and tell me your feelings versus with the SEC and NCWA are saying about potentially cancelling the remainder of the season and either bringing it up in Spring Ball or just postponing it until next year as a whole. Don't you feel it would be in these athletes and young children and I say children respectively. In their best interest. Well just of I understand where you're coming from. I. Don't think we are there yet. because. This is the first time at least within the SEC this week. We've seen it now if we get to Monday and. The Florida game has to be postponed or canceled because. There's going to be at some point there will be conflict, so you can't get around. And these things keep building. Then you have a conversation but right now I mean, we are under ten percent of the Games now. Having said that I'm sure someone out there is going what's not your son or daughter I guess in this case son who who's part of a of a mass breakout. So I mean, there are two sides of the coin. And it's hard to say we're doing everything right the right way and we're doing it safely when. When you can't even feel the football team. But that's furred minutes to decide, and this is entirely on college presidents ride. Now, this athletic directors are going to find a way football coaches are going to coach. But. This is this is up to the presidents of all these universities and it's it's it's on them not me. Who you heard what Scott Strickland said about Florida having listened fifty. Players available well, and and that may not change very quickly because you know I don't know exactly the. Contact tracing. In you know twenty. Eighteen, eighteen in three I think he said because eighteen scholarship and three walk on assistance. So you got a mass outbreak that's a serious situation and my guess is Because of that I, it's you know you start doing testing and contact tracing. It's going to affect more than half that team. Right. All right we'll thank you so much. Thank you. Go gave and and these are tough questions answer certainly something we'll ask the commissioner the SEC. If had known that that. Would have said before the season that pretty much everybody has in Sabourin hasn't said but. He knows it's true on his program and others as well and. And now you've got it at Florida. Lane Kiffin says he has an issue. Then do you do you go ahead with it I? I don't I mean I'm a commentator I want to see the Games I'm not A. Not A. Ethics Professor I'm I'm not sitting on the board of trustees. I'm not running any of these universities I'm not. I'm not giving a voter. We are going to take a take a break and maybe The votes in a couple of weeks three weeks. Let's let's take a break and get back to more. Your phone calls at eight, five, five, two, four, two, seven, five, also Greg mcelroy will be joining us next..

Bring on the snack cake cereal

"Welcome to the Empty Bowl might name is Justin mcelroy and I am a serial enthusiast. My name is Dan Gilbert and I am a serial ethnographer in the sense that I know the cereal culture in the overall breakfast. Zeitgeist well enough to understand the impact of some of the stories we're about to talk about today. that's. So exciting we have so much going on this first news story Dan. I have to tell you. I'm thrilled over here over on this end. I mean it's huge. It's absolutely. Substantial. So. When you write about serial for five years I have inevitably you end up seeing some of the same things again and again, and one of the easiest things to do when you're reading about serial is to tell the world about the weirdly specific cereals that you've always wanted to see on shelves and for me Besides gingerbread toast crunch I think the second most idea of cereal I've ever had would be a little. OATMEAL, cream pies cereal, and now we must wait no more as Kellogg's has partnered with the snack brand to bring oatmeal cream pie cereal two shelves later this year. What's IT GONNA look like? So so from appearance alone, it doesn't necessarily look like the sort of sandwiched cream, an oatmeal cookie. Snack cake that you're familiar with It looks more like a brown oatmeal ring cereal, which is fine. I'm not really in this for appearances so much as the legacy of the snack taking question. You say, what did you say that the cream pie is your favorite little w product It's up there with cosmic Brownie alum that plastic chocolate on a on a cosmic Brownie I used to get star crunches a lot when I was a kid in my lunch bag but I don't like those so I don't know why I felt the need to tell you that but. You know it the for me. I'd say it's a three way tie between the oatmeal Cream Pie the double decker oatmeal cream pies. Distinct feast and the fudge around, which is essentially just a chocolate oatmeal cream by but overall I, think the oatmeal cream pies and amazing snack product. It's probably my go-to whenever I am Matt a gas station stopped long road trip. So I'm very very excited to see it come serial form. Especially, it's going to be a thin line to walk to get that exact flavor because as I, discovered recently. Raisins are in the battle of the bill cream pie. It's sink. Yes. Yes. Yes. Raisins in the OATMEAL cream. Pie. So that's why like you get that like is what gives it its distinct flavor is that there's raisins mixed into into the batter period into the better so. That will be a tricky flavor to to nail. Think I'm really hoping that mine is not the only mind that you've blown with this revelation right here because I did not know that at all I mean. meanwhile, I was just hoping that this is an actual oath based serial rather than some some sort of corn contraption because I think it'd be really an authentic otherwise but. I think my favorite thing about the story overall is how you just know that someone at Kellogg's saw post team up with hostess to drop the sort of twinkies, etcetera cereals, and immediately thought. Get Little Debbie on the horn. We're not going to stand for this sort of force that cooperation to happen. Yeah, it's funny that you mentioned cosmic brownies actually because when the story first broke before, it became official from Kellogg's themselves There was a youtube video of someone reviewing the little debbie cereal or oatmeal cream pies cereal before anyone knew about it and they were also reviewing cosmic Brownie cereal. It was weird because they had the box for Little Debbie oatmeal cream pies cereal but they didn't have any official box art for the cosmic brownies cereal and the stuff really kinda looked like the cocoa puffs Brownie crunch that rerelease not too long ago. So it's very uncertain. The legitimacy of this cosmic Brownie cereal because after the news officially dropped I reached OCTA Kellogg's my contact there and ask them about this and all I could tell me in the Vegas. Possible terms was that a cosmic brownies Syria was not releasing at this time. The seems like a tacit confirmation that cosmic Brownie Syria was at least considered whether it will actually be released or not or if it was scrapped entirely remains uncertain but the point remains that we're entering a brave new world of snack cakes, cereals and I'm all here for it.

'cause criterion does great stuff, but if you haven't seen with nail, please please seek it out it is. "Three FBS programs currently own four consecutive conference titles one Clemson and the ACC to Oklahoma out of the big twelve three is okay apps state you got it as a son about what does that say about the evolution of his mountaineers football program you know it it tells you a lot about the shape they were left in by Scott Satterfield in the you know when drink which took over as the the the main man there and I think you just look at the talent they have accumulated during ten Evans of running backs that Thomas a quarterback in the tradition the their defense is playing great all the time I really like the way that program is three sooner suspended for the college football semi final against L. as you were talking about the fence van Ronnie Perkins running back mark remonstrate Stevenson and wide receiver Trajan bridges these are significant players impact on Oklahoma team that was already an underdog going into this game well Stevenson had a large yards per carry but really their top back down the structures can be broke so I think to be okay at running back I'm concerned about Perkins known because if you look at Oklahoma's defense their strength this year has been getting to the quarterback thirty five sacks among the nation's leaders in TF bells and Perkins right on the at the top of their sack leader so taking him on the line ups gonna hurt and you're going to have to put pressure on Joe Berle because Oklahoma secondary is not a bunch of NFL draft expect their their third good but they're not great quarterbacks can't give brought a lot of time so they're gonna have to generate something speaking of getting after the quarterbacks are chase young is caught on camera when asked about returning to Ohio state saying that's the plan much was made of that response considering that what he's done this year sixteen and I have stacks can you see a scenario where he does not turn pro I'm gonna go ninety nine point nine percent chance no way this guy's coming out probably going to be the first pick in the draft the only thing he could do by coming back is cross themselves some money because right now he's as hard as they could be no he's definitely going pro you think you'll be the first pick in there you think you'd be picked over a quarterback not a quarterback says yesterday you probably draft a quarterback but he's probably the most talented guy had then do it at the most sure thing at the number at the number one spot so he'll go number two and get a lot of money all right the next group of talent to the college football ranks top recruiting classes in E. S. P. N. a ranking those classes of course the powers like Clemson Alabama our house they know less you right there as the top for you got a team like Texas a and M. that's in the top ten Texas rounds out the top ten but how did the mid tier non power five schools even some of them in the power five conferences that are on the tat back into those conferences how did they compete if the rich continue to get richer with those talented classes well the main thing they have to do is develop the players and win games because the kids don't realize the past ten years ago they realize what's going on now and if you can get your team up there and that can win level every year ten eleven wins then I think they'll take notice and you can get my keep in mind you can only sign twenty five players every year there's a lot of talent out there so you might not get the five stars in the four stars but not every five star four star turns out to be a star and not every two star and three star doesn't I mean we see a lot of superstars there so the main thing is developing the kids and winning games good point he's ESPN college football insider Phil Steele Hey Phil bowl season is under way I'm sure you're excited we look forward to talking to you throughout sounds great Jim and livid Jerry holiday and looking forward to a lot of football this week hi Phil merry Christmas take a self thanks all right so we mentioned Perkins Stevenson bridges out for Oklahoma another sooner sidelined as well that safety delay Aaron and Turner yell broken collar bone he will not play as well on that chick fillet peach bowl December twenty eighth against top ranked LSU the game in Atlanta easy trip for fans from that ruse leading Greg McElroy to this take regarding that by you Bengal
