Venture Capitalist Keith Rabois Describes His Typical Cardio Workout Routine

"What would typical work look like for you like if you were going to do specifically a cardio workout designed to enhance two-minute recovery or or some flavor of interval training whether whether you want to describe what you're doing a barry's bootcamp or what you might be doing on your own. What loaded typical workout. Actually be for you. Sure capable workouts not fifty minutes. And it's probably subdivided roughly half into cardio in roughly half into resistance training with weights. And the i'd swap back and forth every called every six to ten minutes between the two so imagine two or three sets of each the cardio component would typically be a mix of jog runs. Sprint job runs french jog run sprint. So during the heart rate up. Max bring it back down not all the way but to you know so where you can breathe normal rows of normally and then spring back up and then bury the incline. Sue tried to the same fight on a plot ground surface and you guys sprint faster. Typically but then increased incline and try to maintain as much of the speed. And then there's different cycle is sector qatar's up and down. You can bury adler thirty seconds. Thirty seconds at the highest intensity or sixty six high-intensity mean or if i i kinda rotated that around somewhat for mental variety unless you're how much physical training really requires us but Up in synchronized to music. So i think music is gonna be darius active from premium performance. It also is very effective for improving Emotional tolerance of intensity training which is related on a lot of good studies. Deflecting in a nice book written by Professor mcdougall at stanford called the joy of movements out of the research on the fact of music on a particular kinds of music athletic performance. So i this is. My workouts are synchronized with like. Eds style music.

Don't sweat the petty things and don't have the sweaty thing sounds that. What's the texture? Avert a person who feels more comfortable talking over text them to your face? I don't need friends like that. Thank you, Uh, first rule of cleaning while listening to music. The toilet brush is never a microphone. Never the microphone. Never, uh My GPS has learned to say your other left. I remember one of my best friends back when he was a paramedic. He would always have to get on the loudspeaker. When sirens are going and he's on a call and people freeze up. They panic and get on the On the P A and say, Man, could you please move over to your right and and then they moved to the left because they're panicking and your other right now and finally get over anyway. A couple other quotes for you. It's a beautiful day. I think I'll skip my meds and stir things up a bit. How's that? I hope Nobody does that. Just intentionally. I had my patients tested. I'm negative. Okay, Well, sometimes I am, but usually I'm pretty patient. I just ordered for life bracelets. So if I get a life I'll be notified immediately. Oh, yeah, There's life alert bracelets. "And I want to in that so. I, want to switch back first question to a little bit more on the business side your business side so you. Long career in in the banking industry economics from a very prestigious school. Right not easy to get into your college where you went. Economics is not typically really a soft skill kind of a a degree. So what? What in twenty years in banking seven years in publishing? To more of this kind of softer look at people's personalities, how people are feeling how people are going that? Lead you the business. Why and you can make money in a lot of different ways? Why this? Well I. Mean it's interesting because I had enough credits and Undergrad to have an art minor. I'm one of those people that sort of like probably right in between like analytical and more empathetic, I guess, and it actually was really great combination to have to be a marketer in banking, because I always supported pretty complex businesses like the investment bank asset management wealth management, so I was the person that had to understand these complex solutions that the bank provided and translate them and things that you know lay people could understand so. I think that. That's kind of what I do now to write as I listen. I'm a good listener. I've always been really consultation of. Listening for okay, what's the problem? I think okay well. How could we potentially solve this and then I? Don't know I think naturally. I'm just sort of an empathetic. Person, but not not soft I mean you can't be soft and work with investment. Bankers No, no. Definitely, not definitely not be hard charging group. It was. It was fun working with them. Now I have to say. That's awesome, so so you so you make the transition when you set up shop. Did you have Clients from your company that you were sort of targeting initially, or where did sort of the first clients come from to make this thing actually real for you? Yeah the first clients. Did come from people that I worked with, and then interestingly enough when I changed my linked in profile to put coaching out there I had several people that I worked with over the.

"Back today. Where here with the legendary? Dr John McDougall. Thank you so much for being here today. Please tell us a little bit about yourself. The books you've I actually read the starch solution and your newest one. The healthiest diet on the planet came out. So tell us a little bit about this and how you became one of the leaders in the field. It's been a long long trip. I've been in medicine for half a century. Yeah and the first first ten years I was training and I was practicing bill pushing doctor and fortunately I had some things happen to me. In those first years changed my life and change the way I thought about patients in practice so for the last forty years I had done the same thing which is taking care of people with something. That's officially known as Diet therapy and this should be courses taught in medical schools called Diet. Therapy what medical students learn. Nutrition classes is a little bit of biochemical formulas. They have no idea how to use diet in prevention or treatment of disease. Yup The literature is extensive researches on questionable about the effects of the benefits of diet therapy. Well I I've been For forty years taking various avenues not necessarily know the truth. Because I learned the truth. Very leery on but to try and get other people who listen and to make changes. And so that's what Marian I my wife my partner life for the last forty six years just share the story of how you fell in love with her at all. I people I was..

"Doctor John McDougall John how do you convince people to avoid eating these kinds of of the dairy products and livestock foods that are hurting the environment how do you get them to change hello first of all I you know I think the day of climate deniers this past George so we were not dealing with that anymore we're dealing with people that understand and if you believe you but they don't believe enough to take action and that's what we have to do is we have to get people to an actual call stage yeah I I would suggest that people start road by reading livestock's long shadow which was published in two thousand six by the United Nations what they fail funded by the food thanks or the World Bank they also need to read the world watch institute look at fifty one percent of the greenhouse gases all coming from the livestock industry and then we had the lancet commission that came out in January of two thousand and nineteen which said that we really almost immediately have to change their diet worldwide were people at most these to me on Sunday or once a week so they can start by realizing that about half of them I would say half is very conservative about half of the destruction of our environment in terms of climate change is caused by our agriculture critically the livestock industry now I want to give you some references George because people there are few people in the audience that want to look at this and check my calculation okay all there's a a PLO S. or excuse me a public National Academy of sciences even the National Academy of sciences published in April two thousand sixteen what they showed that if you give up the animal products what you could do is we're talking about a diet like I recommend we're talking about as much as seventy percent reduction from what would occur in two thousand fifty seventy percent reduction in greenhouse gases S. one okay there was another two thousand sixteen article the impact of dietary change on greenhouse gas emissions they tell us that we can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by eighty percent and land use water use by fifty percent and then there's one of the journal articles the journal of cleaner production and that was published in two thousand fifteen anyway there are three ports to tell you that we can cut our greenhouse gas emissions just let's just say by a seventy percent by changing to a really healthy diet I'm talking about one without any animal products as a starch based diet if you think you're half the greenhouse gases are good of livestock industry and a good diet followed worldwide good to cut those emissions in half we're talking about reducing the greenhouse gas emissions potentially overnight five twenty five percent and making us healthier well you know what the Paris climate change once is to reduce the greenhouse gases like seven and half percent a year we can do it over night overnight if we get people to buy India with AT healthier diet we would do a change felt all health is a plant people would be over your sh like Americans and Australians and most Europeans all are going to be able to have extra food for the people are undernourished women so when one situation there's something holding them back though John there's got to be something what is it well there there is you know people starts are very personal for so we have the entire industry we have the livestock interest you will want most the money's produced I mean how much money do you make of potatoes how much money you make them and rice and stuff like that yeah I mean it all we're talking about an economic thing and of course does have the economic advantages are in charge of the ones who are going to suffer most from climate change are the ones that are least privilege and that's a fact what everybody's gonna suffer amid the predictions of remember when we first started talking about this thank god say fifteen years ago the first inter governmental climate change report came out thirty years ago now the inter governmental climate change panel came out in September of last year two thousand nineteen said we have ten to twelve years and they've actually modified that well we got a change now or we're not going to be able to do it well what I'm proposing is that we all get very very serious about that I occasional George are going to change their diet either by choice or by necessity right some scale something happens will become so scarce and I've got to put this in perspective you got it I I want to try and share with people what they're giving up when they can't picture of a delicious meal say a fast food restaurant or any other kind of restaurant what you see you see a burger you see the letters Cincinnatus upon the ketchup the the you know all of the color of the interest and so on and that's what people are attracted to now if you took all that away what should be left with this is going to offend some people but what you're going to be left with his basically yellow and brown food that smell odors and has either a planter to stay focused and this is a a a food we're talking about yeah she said Mel and beef and chicken and lamb and so on and fisheries and the serial number on food and he's the foods that are sick need people and secure the plant they're also foods that fit the category of people do not want to hear you don't want to hear they want to hear good news about the band have a storage they just don't want to hear the planners the such big trouble yeah it is it is just too much to face but we have to do are they deniers are we deniers we are tonight and you know we don't have to look back many reasons for and it's difficult to change your diet consider only about three percent of population has made the type of dietary change that I'm talking about but you see more and more people doing that movie stars politicians yeah I would go to the different politicians there are a lot of following the vegan diet but of course we get into politics then but I'm not vegan like I said but I changed the truth you know dramatically welcome to your string my diet I I changed my diet almost a half a century are you a hundred percent also beef and since I thought since nineteen seventy seven I've had fewer than a handful of animal property here well because there's no question that the animals are contributing I did not know what was that higher percent John yes and and the important thing no charge and and again I share my experience as a medical doctor taking care of over twelve thousand people the important thing is the body naturally heals itself shoulder the plan and what we have to do is we help the obvious thing of course is to get rid of the carbon dioxide the the the greenhouse gases and were all directed in and and different ways to do that everybody's willing to do that but this can take a long time all it's going to be not somewhat expensive and it's also in control of people who have all the money and all the power in theirs that's the biggest problem dietary changes something that every individual could do right now you can make a statement that actually makes a big contribution to clean up the planet by changing your personal diet and again we're talking about giving up the livestock it used to be someone well people don't realize that dairy products are such a huge contributor to the problem I said that callers they take a tremendous amount of preaching lamp they also they have large monastic excretion because of their perks of their waste products produced nitrous oxide which is three hundred times more powerful to carp action so the the animals are no there there the main character and basically they have to they have the mental part of the diet but that's hard to understand for them to understand what it's better to give them up before we go to calls next hour let's talk a little bit about your starch solution I would have money were really quickly just he just mention some starchy foods for people who might not know what they are what what channels you're right choose the most efficient food it would be potatoes sweet potatoes would be great all we're talking about corn rice he's not even not school keys although low those Russian archer I think not quite George that not my book I know I know I know the grand kids like the cookies but it's not you know it's not part because it's not in your diet in all yes we're we're talking about is a diet of old you have for breakfast hash Browns for breakfast pastas what about today what about pastas pasta be great mashed potatoes hi merry my wife and partner for fifty years and I need a very simple diet we have oatmeal every morning for breakfast also want you didn't we have similar things will have he does have spaghetti marinara sauce muxu vegetables and rice just a few different things that we're over and over and over again very tasty very satisfied aren't some vegetables starchy well they are no they're not free yellow vegetables actually non starchy white kale and lettuce and cabbage and cauliflower and so on there Morton starches in order starch in fact corn is one of the leading food crops in the world probably the leading all scorers rice corn and potatoes fee plus the world we also make us a lot of corn we are we do we do with some people object to that as a waste of good court I don't know I think we make enough for the whole planet can't we well okay yeah it we have a parts were like to tell people when we get back is that this is a real possibility and I want to give an example that happened during World War one okay for one three million people in in our three million change people change their diet so that they wouldn't have to start yes between nineteen fourteen to nineteen eighteen I'd like to tell you when we get back a little bit of the story about your indeed he going you've got you've got about zero after about four minutes all right well what happened is during World one between nineteen forty to nineteen eighty two we had three spot catered men are seeking and dog Denmark was affected scorch because they were in that blockade which they were following the teachings of a guy named Carl for each Nikolay protein was very important sort of the bridge so as a result they continue to maintain a diet based on the basic four food groups that include a high protein foods in Germany four hundred thousand people died of malnutrition between nineteen fourteen nineteen eighty one the kill him he wasn't expressionist in Denmark what he did is he told the population of three million people that the way we're going to survive World War one is we're going to eat the food for the animals the start of the animals so they killed eighty percent of the picture only the rich people in corporate hog and could have the only support farmers would be able to help pork otherwise the potatoes and soybeans six separate George they went through the four years without ever being hungry they cut the death rate from all diseases will move to the most decorated died markets ever see they dropped it I will be a thirty four percent wow they said they fifty lives during that period of time before year's end again the Germans who kept with the basic philosophy of a good diet four hundred thousand died a mail to non Tricia not a single person in Denmark was hungry during the entire four years and this is to the much your candy buffet and to the population lock we we are we gonna stop wasting the food by feeding the apples and they did use the album so we have the choice to do if it remain pure well George we can do it for a planned out of seven days we just need the leaders we need to have people realize they believe that were in trouble but they have to believe enough so they'll take action and that's what I'm looking for we can do this how did you find that starch is the key to proper human nutrition how did you find it it's been the diet with mutual of human history what is it you just have to look at history for example if you think of aging you think of five thousand years Boise you think of Central America I think that the people the corn the aspects in the mind sleeveless for thirteen hundred years on Quora if you think about South America in the Andes and the interest you think about the changes they have different species the potatoes they lived on potatoes almost as the entire diet except for when the intense went to battle management short stick you walk because quinoa which later and they could carry at the battle of the American Indian both on a diet of basically court more power to the party's traditional diet you would be I was corrected charge I used to say there were ten million people to walk by and a professor called me and said no there's been a hundred made house hundreds hundred billion people have walked this earth and then we got around to talking about the fact that ninety nine point nine nine percent of these people have attained the fall but their calories from starch different strains.

he supervises all teaching and medical activities with his live McDougal program in Santa Rosa California and other activities include weekly webinars seminars and health oriented adventure vacations Dr John McDougall back on coast to coast Hey John how are you well thank you very much but god Georgia tonight the night for the children particular my grandchildren I have seven of them wow good for you I've got six grandchildren myself and one great grandchild you don't but my goal George honestly is that after I'm gone my grand children never look back and say grandpa why didn't you try harder you know what can be so tough for them they have such a difficult future looking for them with the changing climate I'm gonna do everything I can I certainly appreciate your opportunity tonight to share with people what I really think it's the problem of the fact we have an emergency and really I have a partial solution well I think we can do something about this charge what got you to this position John well you know I've been interested in a good diet for a long time I've spent fifty years from the doctor and forty years taking care of people with primarily diet and all what I've shown over the last forty years we publish scientific research on this is that people are sick from rich western diet need all the neat the Terry and so on and if you take them all that rich western diet is what happens is they didn't actually get better in it for like I say for over forty years and we published at and and Eckel Charles chilling benefits like reduction in cholesterol weight loss is effortlessly getting ready type two diabetes multiple sclerosis stop in that song sh so are you know I've been non diet how beneficial readers all on to my patient population well in two thousand and six you re a member of all the inconvenient truth by al gore right I came out two thousand sixty told us that other planets on fire and of course it also all day and then what followed was another report to the court which was livestock's one channel that was November two thousand six and that was by the World Bank yeah what they said is that eighteen percent the greenhouse gases are produced by livestock care to thirteen a half percent despite all of transportation well look back when Al Gore had to say and you can be the truth you know George he didn't mention diet wants no it never came up it never came up and you'll be in particular but ruminants in general are the made a major contributor to climate change one we can do something about now are so I get interested after hearing that eighteen percent figure that was to the livestock in realizing that I've taught at diet breed livestock with forty years I've taken care of twelve thousand people and the same guy at all yet I could see back in November two thousand since we're not only your life each but it will heal planned so I got very interested in a good diet back in two thousand six so it's been fourteen years shortly after that a fellow by the name of Robert Goodman not a fellow by the name and hand they came out with a reevaluation of livestock long channel and what they determined they in things like the methane gas rationing transportation sought what they figured was that it wasn't eighteen percent of the greenhouse gases that were caused by livestock we're talking about farm if we're talking about chicken poultry and primarily Roman but they estimated that fifty one percent of the greenhouse gases are directly attributed to the lifestyle he's the one percentage huge our circles as high as eighty seven percent of the agriculture production of greenhouse gases come from livestock and that you can find that figure if you look at a white paper that's under eighty off a website called point that healers and they which ran re analyze the data you know what we're talking about people consume me the food that is very wasteful it takes us twenty pounds of grain to build one column are one pound of beef it's very wasteful in that manner takes a tremendous amount of feet for a what the estimates are that twenty three percent of the land ice free land on earth is used for grazing and thirty three percent is used for growing up not a great food for the livestock so we got about half the planet is being farmed agriculture cutting down the forest making pasture land and as a result it's putting tremendous stress on the environment he was user concerned John though that it's really destroying the environment or it's no good for health wise both it's a double whammy yeah it's eight eight one you current George just one you turn and we stopped two problems one is the major chronic diseases the people have obesity diabetes breast colon prostate cancer diabetes and the other is we give the plan a chance to heal now one of the things that I've learned over the years is that the body naturally deals with all right on I'm stretching your audience a little bit I just wanna tell you as a doctor you'd make everything is right and she began in a patient and then you step back in the body naturally deals we think about last time you fell down you know you scan your new year you're broke a finger a rest or something and you don't say to yourself well what do I have to do to make this he'll get naturally heels all you have to do is provide the environment yes to stop the injuries well what I found out is the same thing applies to the planet we're going to get into that the CD if you stop or repeated injury from the carbon dioxide respect rants predation and to all of the other uses the Colby Kay absolutely natural gas and so on if you could stop that we have to deal with transportation we have to deal with energy dot these are problems it'll take a long time to solve the food is a problem that we could solve overnight and what we found and again you can go to a website called climb healers out what you find if you stop destroying the environment by the things that I talked to Bob overgrazing cutting down forests thirteen methane gas and the environment UC CO two from restoration six separate we stop doing that the the planet just like the human body naturally wants to he also starts questioning carbon dioxide the plants start going back yes we can plant trees to help along but no we have a chance George that's why I wanted an opportunity to tell you all tonight it is S. Jim Miller things will come in ten percent of Australia's gone two weeks ago they had a a piece on sixty minutes word Venice's flooding George R. lost everything I'd much usually all October ninth two thousand and seventeen the wildfires of California is burned staff we have to do something drastic and I wanna I wanna instruct my long statement by saying something really important and that is this is an unmentionable diet is a non magical ball you know I I know we're not supposed to get into politics and I don't want to get into politics but on the Republican side they hardly ever mention climate change Democrats do her be any better I mean Corey Parker's of beacon he was absolutely not people should give up all her animal products their diet he said no hearing said yeah he does need to start the environment but you don't have to change your diet GM please look below the Washington governor who ran on a ticket only climate change even mention diet this is a great unmentionable even Greta Hooper well maybe they're not aware John of the statistics that you just mentioned well you know they are torture I think it's just too personal to tell you the truth I I think it's too scary I think people are paralyzed I've changed my meat consumption dramatically over the last several years only tell you what happened I mean I used to eat my steaks and things like that I haven't stopped it entirely but I'm in a probably dropped at ninety percent and I tape these television programs in the Denver area once a month and every time I'm going to the studio I drive past a farm that has cattle out there by the hundreds right and I looked at these things and I'm just saying I'm eating those and if for some reason it had a mental effect on my head and that's what got me to slow down almost stopping it's just the fact that I saw the cattle walking around live in it just kind of turned me yeah well yeah we arrived on five five smell so bad you can hardly stand the older you know number newer produces all kinds of nitrous oxide which three hundred times more particles and carbon dioxide I mean they're all kinds of things that come out of that cattle farm John we're gonna check a we're gonna take a quick break but I want to ask you how you think you can get people to stop this in order to change it and then now of course we want to get into your starch solution dryer which is an amazing story all by itself we'll be back in a moment.
