Oscars 2021: 'Nomadland' wins best picture on night of historic firsts

"Have been a number of significant winners at the Oscars Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Yes, it's been an Oscars, unlike any other with covert restrictions. In effect, the 93rd Academy Awards has bean celebrating some of the best films. The past year on the red carpet for us, Peter Bows and Tom Brook. Peter, could I start with you? We've We've just found out what the best picture is. Yes, And the best picture is no model on this is the phone that is long being the favorite to win Best picture at the Academy Awards, Directed by Closure Oh, the Chinese filmmaker, she becomes the first woman of color to win best director at the Oscars, and we've just in the last few minutes heard that Frances McDormand has won for best actress for her starring role. In this film, so it really is quite a feat for this phone that tells the story of a group of nomads. It's partially scripted but partially real life because there are some non actors alongside Actors in this film that is set around or shortly after the financial crash of 2000 and eight these people who have lost everything because of what happened in the financial world, going on a journey and the western United States to try to earn some money through some odd jobs. I'm with here in Los Angeles, Tom Brook from the BBC's talking movies. Show and Tom, This is movie has so much better than people thought it has. I mean, it's got through. You know, Matt Land has three trophy is interesting in Frances McDormand, just one for best actress. This is her third Oscar. That I think puts her on a par with Meryl Street, but she doesn't have as many as you. Neither haven't many is. Katharine Hepburn did really good performance from Frances McDormand. I mean, she's most definitely One of American cinema's most reliable and charismatic, leading ladies on this film has done well. It's really the night does belong to note belong to Nomad land so far, and a very diverse night. If we look at these supporting actor and actress categories, both won by actors of color. That's very true. Daniel Cholula, who is British and black, one for best supporting actor and best supporting actress, with one by year Young Eun, who appears playing a grandmother in the film minority, So a very diverse night. Interestingly it's been a good night for women, I think particularly because We had Chloe Zhao winning for best director but also in original screenplay. Emerald Fennel, the British filmmaker. She won in that category That's normally thought of as a male preserve. So definitely progress on just briefly all of this, of course, taking place with the backdrop of covert 19. With the Oscars ceremony taking place at two venues that train station in downtown Los Angeles on the Dolby Theater just very quickly breaking news. Anthony Hopkins has won the award for best actor for his role in the phone. The father Thank you. Thank you. No one expected that you got them both the best picture and the best actor. We really appreciate it. Tom Brooke and Peter bows on the red carpet in Los

Golden Globes 2021: Complete list of nominees

"Let's start off with the major categories. First of all, for best picture. For the Golden Globes. They break it down. Best picture drama and best picture, music or comedy. So let's start off with best picture drama in which the nominees are Nomad Land. This is the amazing movie with Frances McDormand. Who, you know, play. Somebody who's her life is sort of falling apart and she gets in a van and hits the road and lives in RV camps and recreational areas taking on you know little seasonal jobs along the way. It zest a very sweet and very thoughtful, touching movie. I think this is going to be the big winner for tonight. You know People love Frances McDormand. I think that this is gonna have a lot of Lot of success at the Golden Globes tonight. It will be up against the trial of the Chicago Seven, which, if Nomad land doesn't win trial of the Chicago Seven is going to win. This is the Aaron Sorkin. The written and directed production about the famous Chicago seven trial that took place in Chicago 50 years ago. The Carrie Mulligan movie promising young woman Is a revenge thriller, also an outstanding films nominated for tonight and also the Anthony Hopkins movie called The Father. Those air. Your nominees were best Drama for performances in the dramatic category. For actresses. The nominees are Violet Davis on Drew a day, Vanessa Kirby, Frances McDormand and Carrie Mulligan. For best actors in the drama. The nominees are Riz Um, Ed Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Hopkins. I think the winners are going to be Frances McDormand and I just I don't know how Chadwick Boseman Doesn't win. He's amazing in the movie Ma Rainey's black bottom. But you know the fact that he passed away the young age and nobody knew that he was fighting cancer. I think that probably is going toe play into the Planted the decision making also for best movie, musical or comedy. The nominees are Boer at subsequent movie film Hamilton. When they put together a television version of Hamilton in the put it on Disney. Plus, this got nominated. The motion picture called Music was nominated, as was the comedy with Andy Sandberg, Palm Springs. And the Ryan Murphy directed production. The prom. Which has Meryl Streep and has just AH, whole variety of very talented actors. That's also nominated for best picture as well. I kind of have a feeling that Borat is going to want to ping the winner tonight in the musical or comedy category. For best actress in a motion picture Maria Buckler Cova, who is placed Borat's daughter in Borat. Subsequent movie film Kate Hudson from music. And, uh, Anya Taylor, Joy dominated for the movie called Emma for best performance by an actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy. Sasha Baron Cohen is nominated James Corden from the prom Lin Manuel Miranda from Hamilton Dev Patel for the personal history of David Copperfield and Andy Sandberg. For Palm Springs again. I think it's going to be a kind of in a reverend pick, but I think Sasha Baron Cohen could wind up being the winner. Now. The Golden Globes also give out

Frances McDormand Explains Why She Turned Down Press Requests for 10 Years

"Okay. We're going to move on to actress. Frances mcdormand so. She just made this bold confession. She says she turned out interviews for ten years and chance. Good recent the oscar winner told the new york times. It gave me a mystery back to who i was. And then the roles performed. I could take an audience to a place where someone who sold watches or perfume and magazines could not ooh that she a pull that off. Talk to me like with the studio. And say i'm not going to do any interviews. Well that is interesting. But you know who was famous for that trend's prince dude and that's why everybody loved him. He was so mysterious. He's one of the most mysterious unicorns ever. That's why i always say. I miss the days of times when we didn't know every single thing about celebrity. It's the reason why tom cruise came up and came up so hard. It's the reason why. Julia roberts has survived for so long because they gave you that. We didn't know about what they were eating about. What was in their frigerator as we didn't know where they were on vacation. But you also have to just remember that. This was years ago was ninety six when she started this remember. We only had the rag magazines and we had the big magazines and television shows. We didn't have all of this social media so now that's why everyone is putting everything out about what they do. Were like okay enough already. I don't do. You said about the scenario so i i think it was brilliant. Does it do you think they're still shame because to me i. I don't care if if i see a big celebrity coffee or watch or on a magazine cover. It doesn't really lowered their celebrity to me. I still value their are. And i don't mind seeing them in the movies. That doesn't distract me. Dad there's an opposite there's two sides to every story because there are some actors who look down on other actors can't get those endorsement deals. Who aren't you know making that extra coin but i think for for francis and garment. This is about her craft and she never wanted her craft ever be. I don't wanna say soil because it's not really solid but she didn't want white diamonds but i'll hawks. I'm white. i'm here for a chat about the art and her choices in the character because her first come out character was what fargo was in. That was a big deal so in order for you to maintain that you have to pick roles that bring that kind of eat. Attention or people is hollywood.

'Nomadland' drops Frances McDormand into a rootless life on the open road

"So nomad land is based on a nonfiction book of the same name by jessica bruder. It's about these folks who are in many cases older they're sort of battered by economic changes particularly the Economic meltdown of two thousand eight. They are left with very few options. And this fictional story about fern was written by khloe. jiao is also the director as we mentioned fern. This lifestyle is connected to her grief over her husband staff and it it leaves her at really the mercy of the weather and other people. She has no access to health. Care any kind of security. But there's also. I think it's safe to say a freedom in it that she appreciates at times She has a chance to see new things and be independent. There are a lot of kind of sweeping vistas of the western great plains and she starts to develop a relationship with a guy named dave. Who's played by david straight there and and obviously that complicates her wanderings somewhat. Glenn what did you think about nomad. Land. i mean this is pretty great right. I mean fair warning. It is unhurried. It is discursive it's also as you mentioned. It's in love with the natural environment which is very Khloe zhao thing. It's smartly a film that teaches you how to watch it because in those opening minutes we the audience are that woman that fern meets at the store. Were worried about her. Where the manager that gas station. We want her to find a shelter for the night. Because it's going to be cold She's been dealt a couple serious blows and the story of the film is her finding an equilibrium. It's not perfect and it's fragile and take some work to maintain we see the work it takes to maintain but he's got the strength and resolve to maintain it finds a community Found family which is something queer folk no little something about That said you take frances. Mcdormand out of the equation. I'm not sure. I'm still as invested. Because that actor is just an empathy engine. It just radiates from her Even when the role she's playing is more comedic as it is in fargo or even when it's a completely underwritten and onenote like it wasn't three billboards. There's not a trace of condescension in any role. She plays humankind essential or socioeconomic condescension. No actually remove no sense of judgment because francis. Mcdermott is a woman who graduated from the yale school of drama. She's married to a kohen brother. And what do the coen brothers love to do. More than make fun of a yokels. There's nothing about her holding fern at a remove when she's packing amazon boxes. That's fern packing amazon boxes. Even though it's france clearly packing boxes the scene where she goes on quite a bit about how she got more counter space in her van. E you play that wrong and that is a hollywood actor doing a ride along. That's fake but i mean there's something about are you just fall in love with firm. The way she smiles without opening her mouth There's such pain in it but there's joy now did i need fern to quote shakespeare at me. Nope did. I need the scene with her sister where she tells firm. That firm has always been strong in special and smart. Smells nice in this kind of puppies. I didn't need that either. Those moments felt like that was the film. Not trusting itself. Kind of putting on some training wheels So in the end. I think i was more taken by this amazing performance then by the movie itself. Interesting stephen i was taken by the amazing performance. And the film itself I think this is a wonderful piece of really subtle storytelling. It is so thoughtful. It is so respectful and careful and clever. You can tell that this movie. And it's makers spent time with its subjects and really got invested in their lives. This movie could have so easily tilted into mawkishness could so easily tilted into cynicism. It's so easily could've tilted into kind of capital. I issues based thundering and it never ever does. I mean it's funny. Glenn mentioned francis mcdormand's performance in three billboards outside ebbing missouri. The kind of purported to be about the real america kind of the real underbelly of america and it did so by throwing grotesques at us and this movie does the exact. It is a really human and lovely movie and its surrounds. Frances mcdormand and david strathern with nomads. With people who actually live this lifestyle and lets them tell their stories albeit fictionalised versions of their stories. And i just think that works beautifully. Well you can tell in spots when this movie is working with non-professional actors and you can kind of feel that but for the most part i just got totally lost in it. It is as glenn's had its unhurried. But i didn't find it slow at all. I loved this movie.

"That's the sort of role that has won awards for her including an Oscar in two thousand eighteen for her lead performance in the FO homespun parable three billboards outside ebbing Missouri. But even if these types of performances give the appearance of radical nonconformity to me, they seem rigid in their own look ma no makeup way they're assertive realness. The byproduct of serious actor determination mcdormand doesn't always melt into her roles. She shoulders them like a warrior. The work is always on display like armor. But as fern mcdormand is different, even if in her no makeup bad haircut way, she looks much the same at one point fern and some of her nomadic friends attend an RV convention replete with display models of mobile homes that are much fancier than any of their makeshift vans. They enter one nervously only to find themselves awed by it. Soft lighting. It's clever. Stored space is gleaming appliances including the Holy Grail, a stacked washer and dryer. FERN is enchanted. It's like a disco she says, and what you hear in her voice is not derision at the shallowness of people's desire for such niceties but pure delight, the shininess of it, all the citizens of nomad land are as one character puts it people who have lived and living always entail some suffering, but it's joy not suffering that defines them the joy of community and of self sufficiency of making do with what you have and bartering when possible for things you need. Fern with her awkward gait and her crooked cautious smile is the queen of all she surveys of the fields and mountains. She sees during her long drives of the streams where she stops for a while of the shy majestic bison she might happen to glimpse her home is wherever the road takes her house Liss but never homeless and never alone even in her solitude, there will always be a friend down the road. Her America is the one that ought to be a place where people look after one another instead of standing defiantly against each other, they do the work of democracy understanding that it's part of the responsibility that comes with freedom..

And I just want this to be over with. I really do it. A police report McDormand told investigators that she did not want Bryant to be prosecuted. But Brooklyn says the academy still pushed for criminal charges they maintain that. They are actually a part owner and a victim. So was right actually, leaving the party with the Oscar no says Berkman who maintains Bryant only had the Oscar for between three and five minutes and walked outside just to have a professional photo taken. Okay. Right. Yeah. Like, I walked outside of Macy's to have my wife, take photos of a suit that I didn't buy that's not how it works. Because the only place you're going to find a professional photographer at the Oscars is outside. That's great. Don't worry about the professional photographer who actually took a picture of you swiping. This guy Diaz. Steps outside. He's on thin ice. He stole it Bryant. Meanwhile, skip the Oscar parties this year, but did attend the independent spirit awards on Saturday. How is this guy attending parties? There's this guy Terry, Brian who is this guy? Get the Oscar parties this year. And what is how is he allowed to even go to the Oscar parties who is the guy an award show regulars. He's called on my God. But did attend the independent spirit awards on Saturday. Religion wanna tell all the people who prayed for you? They should be praying for some important Jewish religion. And all the Christian people. I wanna thank you. Brian's felony trial could begin in April and Brian's attorney says that he will probably subpoena Francis. Mcdormand to testify reached out to McDormand's representatives today who told us the actress has no comment. Yeah. No kidding. But look the the Oscars do have probably standing here because that trophy is. There's you know, if you win an Oscar, and you fall on hard times and you want to sell it. You have to offer it to the academy. I for one dollars. Oh, I didn't know that. And they get the buy it back from you for one dollar. So it is there's really I mean, you can't when you win an Oscar. You can't just sell it to somebody the academy will come after you hard for them very very hard because it is their award Arbor live on KFI. "So the oscars just happened and there was one speech i really wanted to ask you about beer which is francis mcdormand speech for winning best actress i have two words to leave with you tonight ladies and gentlemen inclusion writer what is isn't inclusion writer so an inclusion writer is essentially if you are alison hollywood then you can put a stipulation in your contract that basically demands a certain amount of your cast and crew has to be diverse so women people of color lgbt members so a lot of these inclusion writers are directed towards a list celebrities and they're not for the celebrities to make the other castings of other alist celebrities people of color or queer it's for a lot of the background cast and non speaking roles and it's also behind the camera so it's your your crew so i have mixed feelings i definitely think it's part of the solution but doesn't fully address the entire problem and the reason i think that as it earlier in the night emma stone said something that made me feel like okay like this is us being more aware she was announcing the best director category and she said four men and greta gerwig and she basically erased jordan pills and toro who are both men of color the.

"The reaction to the revelations of sexual harassment there this isn't a frances mcdormand she won for best actress for three billboards if i may be so honored to have all the female nominees in every category stand with me in this room tonight the actor maralit everybody else will come on and and at the end dean denby she called for an inclusion writer a lot of people are like what what's that what is what is that men inclusion writer is a stipulation in an actors contract that movie if they're working on has some set amount of diversity the people who are using it are actively putting people of color and women in rules in front of the camera and behind the camera it was really striking that she was asking for their of you know she won four three boars outside of having was already a movie that sort of has black people in the most prefer rolls in which has a very blinkered politics around race but what she was saying was i think one of the things that a lot of people who care about inclusion diversity talk about is that the ways in which white people who have uh who have some power in who have some prestige have to use their power to help other people get in the room with the problem is that when it comes to the oscars is not clear that winning an oscar has the same benefits for women and especially women of color who win the award there's not really any sort of traction that happens what their careers following i mean uh monique very famously in the last couple of weeks who won an oscar for her role in precious was fighting with netflixing who she said lowballed her on a contract these things happen again and again and every time there is a big oscar win um there is a conversation as if like oh this will be the thing that changes everything and of course what's telling is that the next time there's a win we're saying the same thing again gene damn here empires cards reach thanks so much that you.

"He just coughs of blood in frances mcdormand space he he essentially spits blood in her face and josh this moment for me is the scene where the whole movie click for me and i realized that i was going to be on board with it because we've seen that tony will shift the way it's handled the anger and the humor and then the the notion of someone's spitting blood on eu is vital and it's is vile of some of the things we see in here in the movie and then for the response her response to that to be one immediately of shock and then immediately after that be compassion her to say i know baby and then she takes charge in helps this guy out that she's been feuding with it just stuns me it's tons me just thinking about it right now and i think both mcdormand in harrelson took to walk that tight rope in that scene is really astounding in that i think we can probably agree on a general there to wonderful actors and i think are amazing in the movie now it turns out josh mcdonough and i share a brain on this seen as well i was looking for the scene online just yesterday and i came across a rolling stone interview where mcdonough the the writer director martin mcdonough says that that scene is his favorite scene in the movie and it was actually an improv it was not written exactly that way that's frances mcdormand and how she reacted to it but he says there's a moment of empathy on her part that's completely genuine where she calls in baby and for him it's what the whole film is about and we heard as well from gabriel rosado listener on twitter who said this was his scene of the year it sums up the whole narrative of the film and its humanistic nature so i agree with gabriel and mr mcdonough and some others who adore this film and that scene in particular i know you.

"Frances mcdormand in woody harrelson gan ours are spectacular in this movie but they are the only characters that seem fully formed in this movie he and the other characters are cartoonish and sam rockwell while the white like a lot is simply not in the first half of the movie is simply not beleaguered digging would not have that job he's a maniac he's a total crazy person you cannot have them on a police force anywhere in the world unless he's the chief know because if he works for somebody else that somebody else is going to say we just can't have this guy i know what you mean that movie i with you on i'm with you on and it really hit cam rockwell is getting a lot of attention for that performance could it very showy in there's not to work with and he's a very good at error and woody harrelson it's great magnificent great sympathy i think you're exactly right about those character the more that i i think frances mcdormand the woman she play is such an avatar for the rage and the day bear that is permeating society right now that it just cathartic to watch her we do this stuff and then she now there who had sought of character named angry but i think once i left the movie in once i kind of got out of the spell of her got out from under the spell the flaws really came to the four to the service for me and the more time that goes by the less i mean the more problems i have with this movie i really do think it's you know it's written by this guy martin mcdonough um a play right and i think that it really shows it it it it feels like it's been written like a play because it's very contrived and it's very much a product of his imagination and i guess this is you know your argument at the subway see and it's like well it's his world and he can do what he wants in it but i just i founded unconvincing and kind of opportunistic in terms of the way that it.

"I'll just say jeff a here's what i'll say my journey with this movie is when i left the theater i thought men that was great love the love a whole movie frances mcdormand awesome the ending israeli thoughtprovoking love the movie and the more i thought about it in the more i read about it the more i'm just like you know what this movie really did make me feel gross and in some ways and at the time i was watching it i was so impressed by the screen rating and and the monologue for these characters are giving in and how how skilfully some of these sequences are executed that i could kinda push those things aside when i was watching the movie but then thinking back and reflecting unavem sekino at no i can't push those things aside like i can't fully embrace this movie in a way that many critics are and that's why unfortunately is not my timeless but i i just need to say that i hope you'll find it diminishes your position at all i think it's a totally respectable choice for number one but it's an it's the movie that lake bothers me more and more the more i think about it i would love to know why that is but i respect you saying i don't take any you know what were the conversation about this movie was really interesting because there was like the festival reaction was generally yeah really positive and people really liked the aim think as more critics got to see it uh some of the underlying problems of like how this movie deals with race like the treatment of black characters in this town uh is an important part of the story been away it feels sidelined to you in because that redemption story line feels unearned sometimes yuccas third through tempted ireland just feels like yeah it it it pains me i i'm i'm in pain thinking about it right now but you know at like i know what's the thing too like i don't i don't want to sound like a were just sitting on the movie yeah just say i don't want is yeah here it is it's a multiple thing right because i think this movie handles the idea of.
