Novak scores twice as Predators defeat Panthers 7-3
"The national predators beat the Florida Panthers 7 to three in their inter conference matchup. Predators captain Roman Josie putted a goal and added two assists and his defense partner Ryan McDonough registered three helpers and a plus four rating. The predators are among the worst teams in the league on the power play, but Ryan Johansson says, when you get two on the man advantage like they did, it can help in many facets of the game. Right now for a power play to make impacts. It's huge and going out there with that swagger and bringing some juice to our club and so I hope to keep that going. "Ryan McDonald scored his first goal of the season with three 16 to go in regulation as the predators won their third straight game with a three two win over the capitals. McDonough cap's goalie Charlie lindgren with a nifty move on a breakaway. I think everybody was a little surprised. I was surprised myself. You know obviously you don't get too many breakaways as a defenseman. So like I said, just happy to contribute here and help the guys find a way. "So I bring it up because as I look at the league and especially the Western Conference, the two LA teams aren't going to miss the playoffs again. Lakers and clippers, Denver, if they're healthy, they're going to be really good. There'll be some drop off, like, say, Utah, for example, won't be as good. But New Orleans is a young up and coming team with Zion Williams from the roster. Memphis, obviously, has the unfortunate injury to Jaron Jackson junior to start the year, but they're young and talented. So I bring it up because those windows are so fleeting. And when you have a 37 year old point guard going on 38 and Chris Paul, who's one of the all time greats and is defied the odds and the aging curve and all that to a historic level, how long can he keep doing that? How long can he be that guy and when Chris Paul is no longer that guy is a team led by Devin Booker and Michael bridges without Chris without theoretically anyways Deandre ayton? Are they good enough to win a championship? I hope so because I love those guys and I'm biased. They're like my sons, but I probably have my doubts about whether they are or not. So that's the tough part. I think whenever you have a chance to compete for championships, you have to take advantage of it. And then also try to keep that window open as long as you can. And then so for me, full bias disclosed with Booker's age and bridges age and 8 and age, I thought and hoped they'd have a longer runway than it seems like they will, but maybe the sun surprises us and match the offer sheet and they are together for the next four or 5 years, but we shall see. Yeah, and if they don't, they still have the fact of not having a center, basically. Biz Mac biombo is not starting to play in 38 minutes a night, I don't think. And JaVale McGee is already going to Dallas. So what do they have left? What are their options in mid July, having waited this long to for this thing to resolve itself? So I don't know, it feels to me like in the moment and again, they've made a lot of good moves the last couple of years. They may have some other plan that we are not privy to and it may manifest in the next couple of days. But as of right now, it looks like they have kind of screwed themselves. All right, moving on to a couple other couple of the teams in situations before I let you go. I was going to ask you, as I was typing up some notes about 24 to 27 hours ago, the jazz having traded Rudy Gobert, having ripped off the band aid having decided this is not going any further than it's gone. It's time to try something new. They're still sitting there with Donovan Mitchell putting out the kind of the messaging out there. They're like, oh, no, no, they're ready to hold on to Donovan Mitchell. I was always skeptical of that and then lo and behold, sometime yesterday afternoon report coming from the athletic that or from, I think, from ESPN. The first report was ESPN saying that there's a possibility or they're not deflecting or they're not turning away offers or whatever. And then it became the athletic saying they're engaged directly with the Knicks, the jazz. Knowing that there's always a fair amount of smoke before we see fire in this league and things can change very quickly. It might change by the time I hit stop on this recorder even.

Our whole crew are just amazing spirits. And so it's awesome to be out here and mcgee and i can't believe what we've been blessed to build and to get to do every i mean. Just don't even know how to articulate. I want to ask you about. I find your your story so fascinating and i know you. You did a book about two years ago and you talk about it. From time to time. This conversation we had earlier. We ran into each other and i. It really inspired me. I mean you. You're doing things that. I don't think even you've quite sure But but you put it. It's not easy to put things in perspective. But i i feel like you. You have things pretty good perspective. Well thank you. And it's you know. Everything's a journey for all of us right and and i've been to have had such a unique path at espn to a nascar specifically first and then doing reporting in college football and other sports throughout this entire thing and then hosting sec nation. A couple years ago. When laura was on maternity leave and and then last year doing sidelines during cove. And so i've i've had such a unique path and along the way a lot of insecurity and a when you realized that you're driven by ego. It's a very unique moment. And very revelatory for you. And then you're able to really kinda dissect dad and build yourself back up. So that's kind of been the journey and i'm just really full of gratitude to be here with with this group of people during this season and start with bama miami. I mean what's what's better than that. That was struck. A i know you. You talk to on. Initially she nation last night. But we brief conversation with lou combs. And i'm just listening long about how this song came came about. And he said yeah i. I've finally left. It was happening. So i called margie. Smith show now. I'm thinking already. You're you're you're you're running nashville. It was a crazy story. It was about three years ago. I've known luke for quite a while i actually. He and i became friends before he became the guy who's first twelve singles went number one. Yeah i want you to listen to it. I want you to get it to the sec. And i was like what so. Listen to it and i knew it was perfect. They wrote it specifically for the conference. And the end the tradition and the pageantry and the passion of the conference. So i took it to espn music and it went down the road. He calls me back. he said. Hey man you know that song. Call off the dogs. I wanna put it on my record. And i was like dude. I'm way down the line here and then last year. When i had cova during thanksgiving tom i was struggling. Not even want to is open. I was in so much pain. And my phone's ringing ringing ringing and our peak over at and it's him. And i answered. He's like what you doing. I said man. I got code. Don't feel good what do you want. He said south on you. Let's get it to the sec. We've been down this road and we really went down the road. Tom mccollum and pete waters our bosses at the sec network and we really put it into full throttle. they love the messaging. They love the vibe. And here we are. He's the official song of our network this season and it's just awesome because he is just his whole thing. His whole brand is very se and so. I'm just thrilled that it worked out for him. And we're going to have that song on esi nation every saturday morning school i. I'm pretty I know everybody has a friend or two. That's that knows somebody but the the number the number of people that you know. I'm with you a couple of years ago. I'm trying to get back to you know. Get home in time for you. And when i got the opportunity to tell him that when i hadn't even met him yet. It really impacted him and we built a friendship from that moment on and i was just talking to him earlier. He's maybe i shouldn't say what i was about to say. You might see him tonight on a football football game. Well the only reason. I know that i'm on a plane couple of years ago to connecticut. I'm going through philadelphia. And you're getting wh what are you doing. Here are going backstage with eric. Chief me i'm like trying to come with me something. I don't know anybody anytime. I said by any chance renewed here thursday night. Did you have a couple pops at dinner at their aparicio's leave your car at somebody brings you. Yes yes. so we're turning. Restaurant is car is covered license ninety. Couldn't like couldn't get in of overeating. Was sitting there trying to bangel so to the point about you know being the first one that did he is in a lot of time. Who's just totally an inside joke. Which is probably professional. It's funny because but i remember about that two year run you had there. I i don't re- i mean listen. You would know it because you lived it. I don't remember if someone system. Sean mcdonough monday night football. I don't think of the narrative that anyone thought you aren't big enough for it. I do remember what weren't there a lot of. I don't wanna use her controversy because that's really strong but there's a little blowback because you would have our the officials sometimes and i. Don did you get heat from the nfl from espn. Yeah i'm sorry. I didn't mean it. Nonsmoking no no what it yesterday. I never said hey you need to back off on you know. I definitely no in from the league ever directly said but you only know you get the sense that the wasn't happy about the narratives. You know the the ending of of my tenure. Monday night with leonard. Football was strange. Because ill when i got the job the money job john skipper president of espn john. Wild hack was basically the number two and john. Kennedy hired me on wild hack. And then he left very shortly thereafter shadowed objector at the heart of central new york syracuse university and at the end of our second season. You'll remember this. Espn convened a big powell at all the town sports. The bristol basically gave us pep talk. It was john skipper connor shell because the narrative around then was that the slide and in l. day actually did a great job. Telling you don't believe it. Disney's doing fine and so i i saw stupor on the way out and he kind of padding on the back and said you know you're doing a great job of above above it right up there really feeling good and then a week later. You know we had several management people who all had kind of similar levels titles They brought The great george bodenheimer back. But he was just you know. they're mixture. The bill catch on fire ill. He didn't wanna make decisions. Like that buys owners is the greatest of the great john. All the people you vetting this job. Who do you admire the most would be. There's no bad meyer morning again. But especially for what he's doing now with the foundation of just such a charitable guy morning but be slightly at that playoff game bob earlier which is bruins last day.
