JP Poulter and Steve Pearce Discuss the Value of Voice in the Drive-Thru Era

"Have a new report coming couple of weeks time in partnership with our friends at google will show that it. We're seeing a lot more people using voice across multiple different platforms while they're doing that in mobile in that call and of say at a small speaker animal tradition traditional sense. Even though it's not been that long for its tradition. I think You mentioned that of the drive through experience as well so one of the receipt of the pandemic has been the impact. It's had on people. Wanting to drive through news takeaway business obviously fall. Moore's been unable to spend time installs. What do you see the opportunity for voice when it comes to place on the move in the car and overseeing the drive through in the future because it's a large and growing pause mcdonald's business by nationally. Yeah it's such an important offices such You you'll know. Show everyone what you will. Mcdonald's kinda you know. He's the leader on dry for A hugely busy during the pandemic as we reopened we will saying kind of those accused the published on abc news etc. I am and that's something that we we need to continue driving as a business during that reopening period. I think it was lost nigerian time. I actually went to work in one of my local restaurants. And not because you know. It's been a long time since i've been kind of on the ground in the field like that and we looked opportunities to try and make that experience better. I'm Comes to mind was how we can use the my on apps i yeah having customers passengers Reordering on the mobile app and website. Pay meant they can skip the old point on the cashier. Windy mainly we could just find on delivery of that food so that really sped up the dry for experience. Then kind of translate that into voice and how powerful that can like if you've got alexa siri and google assistant in 'cause Secular off the happens isn't hind but like you say it's in the it's michael got into the drive through. Tell us a little bit while you see that going. Yes i like. I said if you have him if you have a good list and will. There's a top of voice products in your car than is dislike. Having one of those dr fru ordering in your car that you can have your family toolkit wrote a two ahead of riding on but donald side you could be on a motorway. Heading heading to a mcdonalds. A savvy station or you could just allen a day trip employees will. The family members are interacting with voice building their ruler so the point the arrive at the restaurant you can then seamlessly glide through the dry free on. You're just my skipping. The order point and the payment window guiding t collection win or even skip the dry food together and i mentioned clicking staff. "A lot of people have to do doubles now, and this is another thing about people not getting off unemployment. It's like so this kid's working at McDonald's. The guy drives absolute McDonald's to get food, and there's just a sign that says we are closed because I am quitting, and I hate this job. I think I think there's a lot of places like that. That are that aren't open or cut back hours, okay? Just there's longer waits to get into the restaurants because they you know they can. They can go back to full capacity, but they don't have the staff, right. And a lot of this bad for that is that are there are not happy to be there because they're working extra hard. Yeah, Yeah, They're frustrated. Get their walking up Jobs are not showing up for their shifts. That's pretty common. Six. Oh, three says that Florida Wildlife cops. Name was definitely not Hunter. "Did they start how to. Mcdonald's start looking at voice when it comes to the k. also ended up mon ching An alexa skill. Tell us a little bit about jenny. Yes show so you think you're looking voice in the market has kind of been key. Things may not always try and keep quite close to technology and and trends and a dining anyone could ignore. How how much voices grinder the last few years especially. I'm not percents People use voice. Assistant where is on a small firing or high. I am so it was. It was something that we have to look into a and b That emerging trend says really exciting for us about a kind of dig into voice. Eloy can date for us today but then trying to build a right map for the future as well. Well just thinking a little bit about roy. Bap as we say voices definitely maturing. I think i would say over the past twelve months. We've seen it coming out the innovation space and being much more embedded into different lines of business. I'm we're seeing businesses looking at it in terms of conversational marketing and being part of the digital strategy site Why do you see the biggest opportunity for voice at in the digital business at mcdonalds. Yeah i think i'm right now. We have to look at how consumers engage voice. I am. And i think it's fantasize the moment we say as i can engage platform across say looking at kind of our website. Very similar kind of model is how someone would maybe come into to greet the brand of mcdonald's and then how we can then hand off to of digital products am oversee the navan bay get to digital ordering some point but we need to make sure that seamless some friction as customers the Now off i could How do we get people engaging with the skill and then hand david to a more established digital products because mcdonald's is really convenience water from we've got on mike Mentioned after and think voice has a way to integrate nicely with with apps in the future. You just maybe context for those watching the just tell us a little bit about what the digital ordering experience of mobile is like right now at mcdonald's because it's different around the world yes show there's them a few markets that have them have the we have here in a mcdonald's and so we we branded it as the mcdonald's app say the this gives you the ability to place in the end to end order whether it's at a restaurant or something we've recently launched his will cooling delivery so this gives the ability to have your order delivered by an essentially. It's a you've visited. Mcdonald's you say nice big Kiosks you can order yourself in his having one of them in your pocket you create your account then able to browse off full menu at any item you want and then choose a class. Wherever that's delivery drive in store or one of our new phages which is clicking sets having ruled out to your balking bike which is a a really vip experience.

"Mcdonalds email to its franchisees. Was basically as you said it said. You're you're voiding. The warranty on the taylor hardware which are basically required to us and you may be exposing your employees to bodily harm. Of course franchisees were would be. I guess free to ignore those warnings. Except for the fact that i think the the implicit message that e mail was that this that we don't want you using these things so you shouldn't use them right. Yeah you know it mentioned so it said that but it also mentions that it also mentioned confidential information in that You know kitsch access all of the systems confidential information and this is why again. I'm going back to your rights repair issues. These are the exact same arguments that you hear time and again from whatever that whether it's medical device whether it's an automobile whether it is a Home appliance the three legs of the stool. Our intellectual property warranty void warranty and physical harm and physical safety. Those are the three just kind of reliable like malaria. Curly of the of the anti repair argument is particularly interesting on this case about the mcdonald's machine because confidential information is is another again. I'm not I'm one of the last people to stand behind Or defense you know companies like apple and samsung but at least they make some effort right like some. Some efforts actually define what confidential information is. I mean if you look at this situation. The mcdonald's ice cream machine. They mentioned confidential information. But are there implies. It's their confidential information when really it's actually the owner of the machines confidential information but they never make that clear and so it's a it's a very interesting Head scratcher in which you like. What is going on with this machine and and the ecosystem lewis makes it while we're at it. Let's dispense with the warranty argument. Magnuson moss the federal warranty acmes. It really clear that you know you you do not void the warranty by having e either servicing it yourself or having an independent service person work on it or anything like that. So the whole you know by attaching to catch device you're voiding. The warranty is clearly not supported by federal law. But you're right. What this reminds me of. Actually a lot is the situation on farms right now with john. Deere and data that dedere equipment is collecting from farms soil moisture data weather data and sell on That deer considers it's proprietary information and in fact resells at a at a hefty profit and yet many people are like well. That's the farmers data. They should have a say into whether that gets collected and resold an and it would seem to be the same really the same question. Whose data is it. It's my franchise. My customers isn't it. My data But but apparently not well especially because it's not defined to and you know mcdonalds. John deere probably unfairly. Certainly in an unbalanced way makes the claim that it's their data. But taylor at mcdonald's in some taylor. Mcdonald's make no effort to actually define that or to try and make that argument. they just. It's very interesting. That taylor is a logo. This like nineteen seventy s or nineteen eighty s era kind of crowd. And it's like. They're they literally think they're king and they can just to create a stuff that oh by the way this void your warranty and guess. What is our confidential data. Like you know what you're not saying. This is america. You can't just decrease often have it happen. What do you think what was the response of the franchisees to that message. I guess from your standpoint as a business owner obviously it was a big blow to your business but did you hear back from them on on the specifics of that hoban who would. What do they mean at saturday dr that it was my data or any kind of questioning of that or is it more like. I don't want to kill the goose that lays the golden egg. And i'm just gonna do what they tell me to do and not ask was both. I think it was both. I mean. there's this is. It's both the same time it's like. Hey part of the system It's the system is doing a lot of things that i don't agree with but at the same time. I'm going to completely Sympathetic to catch. Because again it goes back to the rebellion of franchisees in the first place. Why would they have to you know when you when you kind of have to when you look at the existence and growth of kit which is basically a vaccine you know to to a virus that was created you have to. You can't acknowledge the growth of the vaccine without acknowledging the virus and so this this was obviously a slap in the face to the mcdonalds industrial complex that produces this machine but on one hand it was clearly a necessary vaccine technology that That the franchisees still stand behind they still use on so like use analogies and metaphors and it's kind of like being i never. I never supported the war in afghanistan right. But it's like. I'm still still in america so pay taxes so it's like on one hand you don't support this war effort and you don't support you're going there but it's like you're still part of this system and i as a citizen and very powerless to impact. What goes what goes on in washington support afghanistan. I'm not to pay my taxes. Because i don't want the money you know like i mean you can. You can certainly right. That's right the. Irs franchisees are are very much in the same situation. They're like listen we. This is their afghanistan where they don't

Why We Hold On To Things

"When you move to a new home or a new city. You take your things with you as you carry box after box out of your house. You might have an epiphany you own. A lot of stuff hood is the author of possessed. Why we want more than we need. He's a psychologist at the university of bristol. He explores the psychology of ownership. He knows the answer to the question. You may have asked yourself during your last move. Why do i own so much stuff. Bruce hood one-two hidden brain. Thanks for having me shankar. You mentioned bruce that there are about fifty thousand storage facilities in the united states. There are even more storage facilities than starbucks cafes or mcdonald's restaurants what does this reveal about. How much tough. We have bruce. It's amazing isn't it. It's a really strange phenomenon. it's fairly recent. i would imagine as a consequence of the fact. Productions of increased as manufacturing has really developed over the last couple of centuries. But we seem to be increasingly on this relentless pursuit of more and more things. And that's really what drove me to start writing a book about. What's the motivation. Oh yeah what's interesting is that we don't just own staff but we often find ourselves bewildered that we own so much stuff almost as if we didn't have agency acquiring all the stuff ourselves so we look around us and we see how could i possibly have collected all the stuff around me. Yeah well that's kind of the reasoning behind the title of the book possessed and it's a play on words because you know say possessions are the things that we own but i'm also alluding to the fact that this is almost as if there's a sort of little demon inside his which is compelling us to go for more things like this irrational little monster who who controls our consumption.

Small Businesses Struggle to Hire in Tight Labor Market

"As more parts of the us fully reopen. The number of people seeking employment has been on the downturn but businesses are still struggling to find workers. Large companies like amazon and mcdonald's are raising wages or even offering signing bonuses for small businesses looking to hire. That's making it even harder to compete joining me now with more on this is wall street journal. Reporter alison praying. Hi allison thanks for joining me. Of course thanks for having me so often you've been talking to some small businesses who are looking for workers right now. What are they told you about. Some of the challenges they're facing it's a tight labor market. You know this is what big businesses are facing to we saw amazon is trying to incentivize hiring seventy thousand workers by offering some one thousand dollar bonuses. So we're seeing that. This is a really tough labor market across the board but small businesses. One told me for example. They found people but they weren't literate in using the computer so that was a problem. Another company i talked to is having a problem hiring armed security guards and has actually had to turn away business because of that or it eats into his profit margins and his profit because he's having to pay people overtime pay who do work for him. They're even going as far as rely on interns for helping when they're short staffed at the company so this really is impacting businesses. And it's they're just saying there's a lack of talent and one even told me that looking ahead to how big is company does need to grow. He's going to kind of tap out of the talent that's available in the. Us

Bitcoin Plunges 30% to $30,000 at One Point in Wild Session

"We start out. Today's crypto carnage. It was a gut check. Moments in the crypto currency market names. Bitcoin ether light coin. Even doj coin getting slammed. Today's thinking double digits shedding millions of dollars off the market caps and the selling was fast and furious. Bitcoin quickly plunging below thirty thousand dollars before bouncing. Well off that low. It is now down forty percent from its april. All time high so is today's crypto collapse. Just froth coming out of this trade much more pain. Had james mcdonald kickoff. We saw breakdown a bitcoin below the fifty thousand dollar level without a rebound studying the security or if we can call it a security this enthusiastic asset class. We've seen a dip in rip pattern every time. Bitcoins come down that they've come back and bought it We didn't see that at the may sixteenth breakdown below fifty thousand. That was a sign of things to come and then again on the sixteenth excuse me the twelfth and the sixteenth we saw a lack of buying support come in and that was kind of a clue that the sentiment had shifted and everybody knows what an asset swells to the level of did. It's gotta stop at some point. Think those were the clues looking for the next level. We think the twenty seven thousand level the next level carter braxton worth the current quarter start macro is on earlier this week saying you know. Drawdown of fifty five percent is garden variety when it comes to bitcoin nadine and i'm curious i mean a fifty five percent down his garden variety. We're pretty much still within that garden. Variety spectrum doesn't feel too good though now in fact we probably only have one or two clients who don't care about that kind of draw down and chew believers for the long haul in crypto versus almost all of our other clients who preferred us to trade it. And so just as we're talking about just now. We saw some breakdowns not just in bitcoin and below fifty thousand but also in the related stocks whether is gray scale or ms. You saw that breakdown. It was actually broke our short term trading range line. And that's when we knew we actually had to trim so it wasn't a surprise to us. Also this is happening.

"Tipping. Yeah people are tipping. The girls have actually been making great money. Good and where are you. I don't really want to see the place that i'm working but i'm working in downtown. I mean i'm working downriver. Okay somebody give everybody some free shadow. Somebody told me this said that The tips the tips are decent. But the problem is it's only three people working for staff so you you're so the other six people that aren't working are the ones that were worried about. And hopefully if you bring in like a really nice tip like if you know that guy with the thousand dollar tip that restaurant did a really nice job of giving all the staff was even Part of that money. All right i want. I want to ask this question to. Can somebody explain to me how it is in. May because of all of our people the staffer working from home like you know the Salespeople and promotions people. the mcdonald's next to the radio station closed down. How does a mcdonald's close in this atmosphere that we're in right now when everybody's eating fast food drive by mcdonalds and all i see is lines. That are out the door. are they. Closed down for good or the remodeling. The place where they took down all the signs and everything really. I thought it was just because of the construction in the road right there. No signs all the way around on the side on the building. One of our. Dj's win in their for lunch on wednesday and they told them we're going out of business so i guess that location to franchisee. Just i don't get it because they're always busy. Always maybe they had issues with staffing right now or something. They're they're just trying to thin out. The i feel like we need to call him and our boss paul because he went there every single day not even listed no. I think paul's leaves. And why it closed down paulie there so much pre pandemic now. That paul's work from home a lot. The place had to close down. Is he aware though that he's not gonna be able to walk next door and get his his stuff. I don't know and you know what's funny. I did my annual. I did my annual gift to him. My annual gift to him. As i get him a a A a large mcdonald's gift card and then see how fast paul can actually finished an email. Say no good. Yeah but i got him. I got him a gift because great. Now we all gotta get well. I did it. Because he's the guy that got us. A contract has been fought his his not the phones. He's not even answering this. Got you really hold on. She's waving etched facetime him. Paul corvino who by the way. He should on our allies. Oh you're not listening to the producer waving a storm up. I didn't look at her waving at you. And then i just said it out loud to you your body. Because i hate you. What's up paul. Paul we got bad news for you. Hold on for this is. We're not jokin advertiser. Now no no. No no worse. This is even even worse than this will affect you personally. Yeah paul this might be the worst. The worst day this might be worse than than the how the the lockdowns have have affected you paul corvino. Okay the mcdonald's next to the radio station closed its doors and closed down. We're going to have to move. I think that that's that's the omen by the way we've been talking about that. Haven't we about moving i think. Now it's official. I think it is time to move because mcdonald's is no longer there. We're going to have to actually make a chart of all the staff at the building who's going to have to take turns bringing in mcdonalds from their neighborhood to paul everyday so like i'll take mondays and wednesdays and we all like take shifts to see who can help keep his habit alive and it's difficult. I only pass about eleven or twelve on the way working morning. I know but this one was right outside to walk. I get that someday. For for ju it was right outside your window and it got to a point where you went there so often during the day that your wonderful assistant julie would have to.

"You know what one thing that you know. I sit there. And i think to myself as a very brave person which. I'm not very brave. That i did yesterday. That might be the dumbest thing ever a friend of mine said. Hey i want to get together with you before the holidays and i said you know what. Don't worry everything's okay. And then they're like no no no really. I really wanna do it. I think it's because i'm going to have that surgery after the first of the year and stuff so they wanted to make sure that we were able to see each other so we decided that we were going to go have lunch together. Now you say we're can you go have lunch because you were here in in michigan in our restaurants aren't open like they. Are you know for our folks in toledo. His bright idea was to sit outside on a patio. When it was thirty. Five degrees in there was snow outside. Was it a heated patio or no off was it was literally the patio outside of a smash burger and we're sitting there on metal of like outdoor chairs. Just clean snow off of so that we could sit there and eat together. And i realized how horrible this is right now for for restaurant people. Because i don't even think heated lamps would have made it more comfortable. And i don't get the whole you know. People that are the restaurants that are are still trying to stay open. Patio is and the people that will sit there. Like you are brave. Because be done if they got the heat heaters in the right spot in the heat lamps overhead considering making a reservatn romero and Jeff are sales guy. Was there just this weekend. He said it was too hot and he says cold as it was because it was too hot because they'd so many overhead and then the lamp and the portable heaters needs. It was great and it made me realize because i don't want to sit in winter. Jackets need a fancy meal. But i sat wednesday. I went to the got out therapy. And i saw when i was going. I saw the igloos at big laura in and so i said you know what i'd like. Check one hundred. I haven't had a beer in since they closed four weeks ago so called up my photographer buddy said hey when i get out of my appointment you wanna meet up a big lords. I went on. Their website is only five bucks to reserve their little league. Lose out on the patio and it was warm. It was nice now that was but on show a little sunnier. But but i'm seeing people are doing this like we did it in outside of a smash burger. Which wasn't like there wasn't a official. Yeah i'm seeing people that are eating outside at restaurants at the mall. What's the state place in the capital grill at the somerset. People are literally sitting there. And i watched this couple of sitting there out outside. This was last week when the temperature wasn't as cold as it is. Now i mean we were still mid forties or so last week and they had a heater right next to him and these people looked i mean. They looked miserable out there freezing their asses off tonight. My friend andrea de was her birthday. A couple of days ago. So she's like. I really want to celebrate with you so i threw out a bunch of places we haven't picked one. Yep all outdoor igloo or not an outdoor with both of the places. I recommended are outdoor and they have like the fire pits that you can sit around and the heater. So i feel like we'll be okay We're not going to zero temperature yet. That we know is coming in january but for me. It's like. I'm i want to support these restaurants so badly and i'm so sick of getting takeout in my own living room so like how can we out somewhere and and safely you know still eat a meal but still supports the thing. You're not gonna get covid. You're going to get pneumonia mission out of that in the middle of the coal. What's up tabitha. Hi hi what's going on. Good i just wanted to say that. gillians coney island at twenty three mile and gresh and chesterfield. They have Heated seating out there and the patio. Well i worked there. Yeah oh in our people. Enjoying the heated patio seating. Is it warm enough to be able to actually like enjoy your food. Yeah it is warming off and people are loving it so we have Four or five heaters out there right now and we're getting quite a few people coming into come enjoy a meal. Since it's such a rarity now. I feel so bad for For you for what's been going on. Because and i hope that people are tipping on takeout or even if they're sitting outside i hope that they're tipping twice as much. Oh my gosh lin- same doubled the bill. I gave her the same as our meal our beers in pizza. Because there's only three glues just server is hustling up and down back and forth but she can only do three tables over ninety minutes so she's not making that much money. We talked yesterday and About the the huge tip. The five thousand dollar tip in in toledo and i looked at that story. And i'm like that is such an amazing story. And i almost feel like it'd be such a cool thing if people you know deferred from giving like us you know gifts random gifts for each other and just use the money and just like walked into a restaurant and said hey here. Here's you know for your staff just to be able to to help them out What's going on lori. hi On monday night. Two buck shots in clarkston. They had love buck shots. Igloos set up. They were all decorated and we went to the head of the lights afterward. Oh yeah it was really awesome. Shots has the best nachos have your. Did you have the nachos. Now the naturals are fricken. May zena buck shots if you're if you are looking for if you're gonna go that. Dt light thing that they're doing buckshot is like a moments away from there. Just minutes away from there you go check that out. It was great wearing on. Yeah did up really nice. Yeah thanks so much. Thanks nice to talk to you. What's up in in tonal in- tonia antonio. Hi how are you guys good. What's going on not too much. I was gonna comment about the terry out stuff. A lot of places around over here in line or close because a lot of people got kovac close. I want to get pizza the other day and they were crazy busy and people were complaining. How are in the workers and sauce. And i felt so bad. I gave him fifty dollars tip. There is good for you for doing that. I can't believe. I can't believe like the the people that would yell at somebody. Because of their pizza was being delayed or whatever like that at a time like this when people are going through with their with their dealing with right now What's up jonah. High hire people.

"Speaking of mcdonald's was the old school cookies they had a of chocolate chip but then they also had the little bags that were all different colors and they had all of the different mcdonalds characters on them. During of those those were so good. I had this taste. They i i vividly remember. I haven't tasted anything else like a yet. It's extra it's interesting. You talk about that. Because that was a big christmas gift for me. Mcdonald's when i was cookie. No mcdonald's when i was a kid didn't nobody had gift cards. They had just like these little coupon books. But you'd get the coupon book and you can kind of go out and do all but one of the things that i love so much was my family would give me the coupon book with the Cookie cookies delicious for me. It's the wendy's bacon ater fries episode. Take rise do they. They're they're like every so often enough to See see them. Sneak it back on the menu but it's basically a big fries that they pour the liquid cheese on top of and then bacon. It's kind of like their version of nachos soga. I got wendy's the other day. When i was driving back from a video thing i had to do in grand rapids. Their fries are garbage. their fries are so bad. Excuse when he's like nothing. I was so mad. I'm looking should've went to something we should've went to. You can't compared to mcdonald's. That's the hall of fame fries. Nothing beats that but wendy's eight anything that you had a bad experience. Because i promise you wendy's are my favorite fast food. Fry what their sea salt. They're usually there. Was no solid vicar. Kyw of wendy can't be friends with you anymore. Oh by the way. That's where we compare big zayed. Compared to mcdonald's fries wendy's he's fraser garbage but compared to burger king fries. Yeah a potato raw. What i finally figured out burger king. Fraser are mcdonald's fries. All the daily double was like the buying. It was a male. The bigger onions that are on the family and then like lettuce tomato meat. Cheese meat really. Okay it's amazing to me that you both worked at mcdonalds and you had a favorite sandwich because you think if you work there everyday and smell it and make it and everything. You wouldn't want to eat it anymore. Yeah it did get away for a while but oh that's just great and then it would go away and then like the next year baseball season. Come back and it would be back so you get it for like six months a year. Do you remember the mic arch deluxe at all the big arch. Deluxe was a was a rather delicious sandwich. That mcdonald's had and i think they got rid of it because they didn't want to keep fresh lettuce around just texted in. They still have the daily double. You just have to ask for it. Yeah okay going back. Happy wednesday thank. How about the sean sean. What are you on a see brought back. Actually a couple of things is it. The taco bell. The nacho fries. Yes they keep bringing taking away and the next thing and i are. You guys can't see fast. I hope you agree with me. I love kfc. Yes what would you like brought back there. The day fakes short. Bury the limit that i never ate. That was bad as dessert. I know anytime we ever had. Here's a problem. There are six kids in my house in my house. I a lot of kids. We would buy a kfc for the sake of feeding the whole family. We weren't buying face for everybody man. Get rid of them. Bam case i want my down failure. The parfait sean. Thank you so much for that. All this is a very big one. Mike is on with us right now. Are mike from the show. Who's on his way to our breaking and entering christmas. Wish what is it that you want to see. And i have no idea why they don't bring that back it was. It was a wonderful delicious. And i don't know it had to be cheap. I don't understand why they don't offer the amazing thing is. I'm surprised but he doesn't put it in a can like you know. Sell it at at stores and call it the mcdonald's spicy orange county combination with it and now they have like eight different like they have these two machines that you can make a different things together. But like they got rid of hype. You're yeah we need. Hi c orange mike. You're going to be out. Grant a wish in about an hour from now. And it's a it's a heartbreaker today. In terms of the recent, George Floyd protests I about it in terms of the Rodney King uprisings that there are these moments where worlds are colliding at this place that everyone has been to more or less, but it means different things in different communities because of race. Is Black lives matter a moment for McDonald's? What are they doing? Well I, think that McDonald's is doing something that they've done for a really long time they've taken. The temperature of the moment and shape shifted in response, so they are seizing upon a corporate shift towards supporting black lives matter, but one of the things that I think a lot of these companies don't understand, is that when you declare that black lives matter you shift the terrain of the debate now people are GonNa say well prove it. "In McDonald's history. McDonald's executive sat across the table from the members of operation. Black Unity Near. Stoke stood by to facilitate. Facilitate people were armed. People brought guns to this meeting in case got to explosives, but this point Cleveland's white franchise owners wanted out their businesses were being crushed by the boycott, and they were done with being pulled into contentious civil rights disputes for McDonald's. However, it wasn't so easy. The company knew how it would look to give in to threats and intimidation and someone like a hill in particular, plus he was making demands that could set a precedent for McDonald's to. To have a role in local communities that it just didn't one operation black unity demands. We'd get to pick the FRANCHISEES. We get a fee for our I. Guess Search Firm Capacities. We get a pool. We get a card. We get money invested in a community trust for us a McDonald's. No, no, no on every point there stokes was caught in the middle, his white Democratic primary opponent was using the protest as a scare tactic asking what local business would be. Be Next to fall victim to the threats of black activism, if stokes wanted to live up to his promise of unity and get reelected. He had to get this settled. Meanwhile, members of Operation Black Unity turned on Hill, accusing him of extortion he'll lost control of the movement he had started now. All of this posturing and back, and forth is happening in the press as well as the national newspapers pick up the strange story of McDonald's boycott and Carl Stokes McDonald's. McDonald's was keeping an option warm. This entire time turns out behind the scenes. McDonald's and mayor stokes had been in talks with another community group one that would take over the restaurants that white franchise owners were giving up and that this group would be responsible for any community development projects like swimming pools parks that meant McDonald's was off the hook. Oh and it never have to negotiate with David Hill ever again. The day before mayor stokes primary election. He arranged in. In. Agreement with McDonald's and operation black unity to end the boycott stokes was reelected, and while hill did not get control of the restaurants. They were being run by members of the black community. I guess the question is. How do we measure success? In this situation? The boycott did expose black economic power in Cleveland in a time where African Americans were for the majority living in poverty. It did show that there was a difference having a black mayor, even though it. It did not solve all the problems. The Cleveland Boycott was covered in papers across the country, and the eventual agreement demonstrated to activate that local black communities could have a voice in negotiating with an international corporation about how it operates in their neighborhoods. Even for that brief moment. They really did impact. McDonald's and so I think the takeaway from those experiences were then deployed in different cities as they were challenging. What did it mean for McDonald's to be such a presence? In the years after Cleveland more and more black entrepreneurs around the country took over existing McDonald's and open new ones for fifty years. They've tested. If black capitalism can improve the lives of black, Americans in their communities wasn't enough. That's when we come back. We're back. In nineteen, sixty nine Cleveland's black entrepreneurs got what they wanted. Ownership of local McDonald's franchises and marked a change in how the company would operate in black communities for years to come. Black capitalist hoped that McDonald's restaurants could help franchisees in several ways i. they'd let them become business owners next with the support of McDonald's businesses would become profitable, and then with that money, black franchisees could invest in their communities and thereby help other black people. It hasn't been that simple from your reporting and talking to people. How are black franchisees feeling about McDonald's corporate? I spoke with a lot of former franchisees. Who? Especially have very mixed and more negative feelings where they feel like they've been forced out. Basically that McDonald's put them in a situation where they could not win, they could not continue to save the company. K Taylor is a senior correspondent covering restaurants and retail for business insider. At the end of last year, she reported that many black franchisees were making significantly less than their white counterparts. She also found that in the last few years, the number of black-owned McDonald's has been falling out of the seventeen hundred people who own McDonald's restaurants fewer than two, hundred or black. That's down from over three hundred in two thousand seven people have been aware of. Of these issues for decades, and from Dr it kind of goes, through ebbs and flows where they feel that McDonald's is listening to them making some changes and then periods where they feel like McDonald's is ignoring the concerns. This goes all the way back to the nineteen seventies and in response, lack franchisees created a group to advocate on their behalf. The National Black McDonald's operators association over the years. Some of them have accused McDonald's of discrimination. More recently black franchisees have told Kate that they've faced obstacles on several fronts. I mean restaurants were not as financially accessible as they'd hoped for more than a million dollars to just open one location, so you have to be a millionaire several times over basically you are going to thrive in the McDonald's system at this point. Add to that in recent years. McDonald's corporate has demanded expensive tech upgrades and move towards a model where fewer franchisees own more restaurants. That's made it even harder for black. Americans to buy into the McDonald's system. Because African Americans in this country are less likely to have the generational wealth. They just aren't in the same position to. Invest millions of dollars as frequently as some white Franchisees have been in two thousand seventeen, the Federal Reserve released a report showing that on average black families net worth is fifteen percents that families. So getting a franchise has become more challenging, and that brings us to the second point that these restaurants would make black business owners money. Kate found that it's been difficult for them to make a prophet. Right McDonald's several told her that the company LTD which ones they're allowed to run and where they could open new restaurants. If you're in an area that is lower income, it can cost a lot more for security cost. So. That's something where you're paying more for security. You're paying more for insurance because of concerns related to that, and that just cuts into the bottom line. Current and former black franchisees told Kate Dave attempted to run restaurants in more affluent areas. One told her that working a corporate liaison he tried to help. A fellow Black Franchisee opened another store nearby. McDonald's basically told both franchisees that their new stories available. It just wasn't a possibility at that point. And then literally the same week McDonald's announced that there was going to be a white franchisee opening a store on the same street that the black Franchisee e had been trying to open the location on. CATES said that McDonald's declined to comment on this specific example being excluded from owning restaurants in higher income neighborhoods has financially hurt black franchisees to sum it up in the most basic way, black franchisees we're making about sixty eight thousand dollars less per store a month than the overall total or average franchisees overall that gap is more than double from what it was and twenty twelve win. Black Franchisees have spoken out about their concerns. Some told Kate. They've noticed strange corporate behavior like McDonald's employees showing up for unplanned inspections late on a Friday night once even Christmas Eve or getting written up for minor infractions like a torn piece of wallpaper and that could. Could lead to franchisees being penalized financially, or it could lead to them getting their stories takeaway mixed in with all of this fears that if black franchise owners are struggling financially, maybe even selling their restaurants, they won't invest in their local communities. Remember.

We had birthday parties at McDonald's because her apartment was on on the small size I went to McDonald's after work in high school and after school. That looks at food through the Lens of science in history. I'm Cynthia Graber and I'm Nikola twilly and this episode. We're getting to the bottom of how McDonald's took over America. The story starts with WHO invented the hamburger burkart. And how did it become so ubiquitous that it gets bigger from there this episode. We're asking his McDonald's basically America's national cuisine and if it is is what can it tell us about who we are as a country less. How did the tax payer ended up funding the spread of McDonald's in the inner cities and why we're civil rights groups on board? Well whatever idea you have of of. How huge fast food is you should double or triple in your mind because the statistics are bonkers? They're completely bananas us. Eighty percent of Americans eat fast food every month. Ninety six percent of them eat fast food every year which is more than the number of Americans that participate participate on the Internet atom. Says there's not a single place in America that eighty percent of Americans go to at least monthly not a library or Jim or any house of worship according according to the Centers for Disease Control which is not happy about this stat. More than a third of American children eat food every day and for the population as the whole. It's roughly the same thirty six percent of us. Eat it every single day.

McDonald's is testing crispy chicken sandwich into markets. I'm sorry to report that. Neither of those markets as close to me Houston Texas and Knoxville Tennessee today through the end of January. McDonald's is testing this out. I think if you're a McDonald's shareholder you've gotta it'd be popping the champagne because this is I mean. This is the story of well arguably the story for McDonald's twenty nine thousand nine is the sudden departure of the CEO but but right after that is earlier this year where the independent board of Franchisees send the letter to management saying priority number one is a southern style. crispy chicken sandwich so we can compete with chick-fil-a and now Popeye's and well done franchisees because they appear beginning their wish. Well done if it's well done because chick-fil-a sets a pretty high bar. I have not tried the Popeye's chicken sandwich because I'm not going to wait in line for the chicken sandwich any any more than the normal amount of time. You wait in line for chicken sandwich but McDonald's has to get this right and the reality is they've struck out with premium. Chicken sandwiches sandwiches. They also have not done a particularly good job in the past decade since I was a kid with event launches remember when it used to. I'd be like it's the Olympics and like McDonalds have they were the sort of original pioneer in that seasonal exciting special offering. And it really petered out. I mean they did that. The whole international menu earlier this year and few weren't driving by McDonald's you didn't ever really good sense of what was going on so I do think this is good but the sandwich you better be good and that's not always easy to pull off. Yeah I'm I'm trying to remember who it was but Someone maybe it was Burger King someone in the last year or two a rolled out a new product that had been field tested. And it hasn't really worked. I think a great example would be Caso Kepala other ego where where they did a lot of tests and that's what it was. It was just because now it works but the first time they're like. Hey we tested it in these markets and we're ready for the roll rollout and nationally. It was a loss in my opinion. They asked some of the wrong questions. Because people like the taste but there was an expectation for appearance. Appearance with K so that it it still doesn't deliver on so they were kind of missing the mark and I don't think McDonald's will do that but tastes or subjective. Do you really. You believe the Popeye's chicken sandwich is better than like a chicken sandwich at a nice restaurant that does chicken sandwiches probably not but people have gone mad for it so it becomes a viral thing and and more a status symbol than necessarily the quality of the chicken sandwich. I absolutely agree with you that they need to get this right but I also think that they don't need for the sandwich to be the best they don't need it to be better than Chick-fil-a they just needed to be good enough. So that that particularly on Sundays when every chick-fil-a is close people. Say All right. I'll go to McDonald's for that. I feel like if you're a McDonald's you should really just google. How do I make tick Philip Chicken Sandwich because you can do that? You could find all the fast food and different ways to make it at home and that really should be your flavor profile and what you're going for. I'm not saying copy. Get a hundred percent. Exactly maybe ninety eight percent exactly. But there's clearly a standard for this and Chick-fil-a has created reputation that it's a premium product which people will pay a premium price for. McDonald's has struggled with premium price. So they may have to deliver premium product at a pretty good but not premium price. So it's a bit of a tight rope but yeah if they can make this work. I think it'll be a driving. Hit for them before we wrap up. It's been a tradition on this show starting back in two thousand fifteen started by our producer extraordinaire. Dan Boyd that the holiday music that appears on the radio increasingly earlier in the year. We don't begrudge the radio stations for doing that because that makes them money. That's one and it was early. I think it was early November a station here in DC had flipped to the holiday format and one of my kids is. Why do they do that? And I said because it makes money. That's quite simply. Why don't begrudge them doing that? What we judge them is the fact that it's the same fifty the songs and there's so much great holiday music out there so we took it upon ourselves on this humble little podcast to replace our standard in closing music with a different song for the month of December each day? A different song to you. Know to sort of broaden the horizons of us and the dozens of listeners because again there's so much great holiday music out there so many artists that you wouldn't necessarily here on the radio so it's a little it's a little public service campaign and it starts today looking for Christmas segregation from the Jewish guy sitting across the table. What we do want to go with Christmas in Hollis? Could we walk me break out a little run DMC what Christmas. That's one of the. That's one of the fifty. They get played on the radio. Although I will say. That's actually a good. He's a good song. But you know I suggested before maybe something from the new letters to Cleo EP. which is a Christmas album? We'll check the Austin band where Botha fans of but we But we also so Mix It up when it's Hanukkah we play Hanukkah tunes so so we'll see that's going to be happening all month long but unfortunately Klein is not going to be here all next week. You can find him somewhere in the Carolinas. Doing a little boots on the ground research and casino. Thanks for being here. It's always good talking to you as always people on the program may have interest in stocks. They talk about on the Motley Fool May of formal recommendations for so by herself stocks based solely here. That's going to do it for this edition of market. The show's midst by gambling on precision. xtra listening to see tomorrow.

"They all have a MAC, Donald's everywhere, you go now in some places, you can go to McDonalds McDonalds, and you can get the usual standard fare. You can get a Big Mac, and you can get a you can get a quarter Pounder with cheese. You can get French fries. But in some places like the Middle East in Dubai or Abu Dhabi or in Kuwait City. You can probably get something a little with a little Middle Eastern flavor to it. In Tokyo, you can get something that's a little different and Seoul, South Korea. Something maybe a little maybe a little kimchi burger or some sort. Everywhere you go. It's pretty much the same. The McDonald's owner was really proud. I have a confession to make. When things one of the things that I do that. While you animals wherever lovers out there. I have a hashtag us quite a bit on social media in its bite me. Hashtag bite me. So all you animal lovers that went to jump down my throat for this. Well, bite me. I probably every morning. It's gonna work out in the morning since tonight will be the first night, we go till eleven o'clock, but I usually get up, and I take I take. Take the dogs to McDonald's. You see? They like McDonald's sausage. It you an egg mcmuffin or something and maybe a diet coke. All the dogs, MAC, Donald's, sausage biscuit. They don't get the biscuit sausage. So all you animal lovers out there looking to get mad at me about that. Well, again, hashtag bite me. But. I'm always fascinated because I went to McDonald's that was not what I usually go to near our home because it was closed for something. So I went to another McDonald's. And holy cow. The drive through was real crowded. So I decided instead to just jump out the car will quick and go inside. It was sleek. It was modern and they had the kiosks were you could punch in your own order. Oh, it's America at its finest. Burger. This new owner this franchise owners describing his newly installed kiosks. Now think about a kiosk. The kiosk is where you walk up and you punch in. And this guy's is going to show you in a minute how you can special order your cheeseburger. But think about a kiosk. They don't demand fifteen dollars an hour. Minimum wage. They don't call in sick. They don't show up for work late. They don't show up for work at ten o'clock because they thought well, you know, sable o'clock's just too early. If I had you know, I have some parties with my friends last night. And so I you know, I didn't want to come in for eleven kiosks don't do that. Kiosks don't get in fights with the other employees. Kiosks don't sit around and gossip about the other employees. Kiosks just take your order. One is good. Customize. Only only in America. Although I think.
