"The vice ever got was keeping it real. And keeping it real in the cliche term that the streets give you yes, he's actually keeping it criminal. Hey, everyone welcome back to on puppets. I'm so grateful that you keep taking out the time to invest in your growth, your education, and for you to move forward. And today's guest is going to help you do just that today's guest is super unique. It doesn't really need an introduction, but I'm going to give him one anyway. Because I think that it's important for each and every person that we have on the show. Today's guest is Charlemagne, his best known for co hosting the breakfast club. He's a social media influence and executive producer and someone who I think, has really interesting way of thinking about culture media and what's happening in the world today. And I can't wait to tap into that Charlemagne. Thank you so much for making the time man. Thank you for having me. Yeah. Thank you. Well, being yeah, really good one. Thank you. Yes, sir. Yes. So today, I want to dive straight in by call the podcast on purpose. I believe you're someone who's living a purposeful life. And I really want to dive into what that is. But I want to start by setting your background up a bit because I want my audience to really learn about what you've been through where you've come from. And now. Growing up. You went to jail quite a few times. Yes, indeed. I tell me about what that experience looks like feels like and how you're able to evolve from it. That's interesting question. Because for me the first time I ever went to jail, I didn't realize how much trouble I was in, because I went to jail was for so and Bredon intend to kill and it was me sitting in the backseat with one of my homeboys another guy that was driving. And you know, one of my homeboys shot at this car because me, we had just been arguing with the guys. We're not really argue losing the neighborhood talking today, girls and they drove through and I was acting like ice Cuban boys, in the hood, have my shirt up, I ain't even had no guns got my shirt up like it was it was up. Y'all got a problem. You got a problem. So then when we left the neighborhood and went to McDonald's, Dave followed us, if Allah behind us, and then they pulled up on the side of us. And so my homeboy shot. And they literally came in arrested me the next day from high school. And, you know, you gotta think up until that point, I haven't getting into a lot of disciplinary problems in. High school, but I had never been in to a situation series, while had ended up in jail. So it's like when they put me in handcuffs in high school. I honestly it didn't even dawn on me that oh, shoot, I'm imprisoned. I mean, I'm in jail and county jail in my mind. I was like, I'll be out in by Friday and time for the football game. You know, like I literally thought I was going that day. And I remember, you know, the police officers giving me a statement to write and I wrote this long. Lying asked story about how I was hitchhiking and jumped into call which hitchhiker, then I don't know who the people were shot is made up this whole BS story, you know, and I remember the officers coming back to the enemy, you know, we was going, we wanna let you go, but, you know you you to send us on his wild goose chase. And then my father, my father was like, look, you know, I'm, I'm gonna let you sit here for 'cause, you know, this is what I've been trying to tell you your whole life. I've been trying to tell you that if you don't change your behavior, you're gonna end up in jail dead or broke sitting under the tree. And you know, he he let me sit in there for like, forty five fifty days. Wow. I mean he was he was actually he was waiting for the bond to go down as well. But he really wanted wanted me to learn a lesson. And, you know, I didn't learn that lesson the first time I wanted to jail. You know, I learned in more like the second third time I went to jail because, you know, when I went off, I got up, I was actually the the day. I went out, I went right back to the hood and my father told me not to do that. And you gotta think I hadn't smoked weed for fifty eight. Okay. So that's, that's kind of like when my love affair with marijuana stop. Because I remember getting out after those fifty days and smoking weed and being soul paranoid. And all I kept thinking about was I'm about to go back to jail amount to go back to go back to jail. But I didn't realize that the time I was dealing with anxiety too. So not only do we, it was just a natural anxiety that I had my whole life was calling me to have a panic attack. I remember having a panic attack at at that football game. So, you know, for me, it was just a learning experience. Because because it was it was a validating everything. My father was telling me, my father was telling me that if I change my behavior financial aid my lifestyle, I was gonna end up in jail dead or broke sitting under the tree. So when you see things happening to other people, you know, why people learn from those mistakes, but, you know, you know, a lot of times, you know, you have to go through things yourself. You know, in order to, to, to really learn from them. That's why they say smart, people are from your own mistakes, while we mistakes of others. I wasn't wise in. You know, probably wasn't even smart. What I had to go through all of that. You know, just to. Just to learn the lesson that my father had been trying to tell me for years. Yeah. And what was it about that time? Were you like okay now I get it now I get the lesson. It wasn't. It wasn't even necessarily just thirds. I remember the second time I got locked up. I got locked up for distribution of marijuana sold to undercover. And do they had a drug was on, on my house? We used to trap out of recipes to my manager AL Garnett. And we all was in jail, and I remember just always being in the cell and just. I just do up like I wasn't drunk anything. I just I was just sick come like, oh, my God, I'm back in jail. Like I was only there for the weekend. And then it was just like the, you know, the third time was just like man. I'm I'm just I've put myself in such good positions. You know what I mean within our put myself in such bad positions. And it's like, yeah you can't, you know, play both sides. You know what I'm saying? You gotta really one of the other. So it was just me finally realizing once again, everything my father is saying is true, if I don't change my lifestyle, I'm going up in jail dead or Brooks in under the tree. When you see people that you grew up with who used to look up to, and they really are Brooks in under the tree. You got people who end up going to jail for five years that was the first time when, when my homeboy he actually went to jail for five years. He was the first person I knew that had like a, a longer prison sentence, five years seeing like forever until he came home. But those type of situations just finally made me say like this is. Real. And I'm not gonna waste my life and, and are always had this vision of the future. You know, 'cause I don't know what I was reading one day would have just said everything you do in your life today, directly impacts, what happened in your life tomorrow? And are maybe I saw back to the future. And I was like, damn, I remember I believe in the space time continuum. So, you know, you, you, you see what happens if you don't make the right decisions, you know, pass that will impact your future. And I always thought about it. You know, I thought about what my friends were doing what my cousins were doing, you know, in, in, in, what was causing them to be washed, so to speak, causing them in jail. And I was like I'm out to do the exact opposite. And that's exactly what I did. I started going to night school. I started, you know, working real job like I just did anything I had to do to create positive energy in my life. I love that man, because I think a lot of us can have experience. Maybe not the same extreme of going to jail multiple times. But I think a lot of people listening right now, watching right now would say that we're not wise. We don't learn from the mistake. Of others. We don't learn from hearing about the mistakes of others. We learn by unfortunately or fortunately, going through the experiences and one thing that you sparked is what you said about your father. There's, there's a statement that says the day that you realize your parents were right. Your kids are telling you that you're wrong in day, you realize your parents. Right. Your kids are telling you you're wrong. Absolutely we go for that process. I'm not a father yet. So I can't I can't testify to that. Other he's almost three what you're trying to do. I'm still way I'm still way. But I mean, do you have that sometimes do your kids when you're coaching your kids, you're sharing that wisdom with them, or inside with them? I haven't gotten to that point yet, like my oldest daughter is ten okay. Mother daughters. Three and I got a seven more full. So I haven't gotten to that point where like, like, you know, both of my daughters have their own personalities. They're both very strong will. But for the most part, you know, especially my oldest daughter she really listened to be my second daughter, and listen to me at all. But she's only three. So I got time, but my oldest daughter listens to me a lot. And she listens to me, unless beautiful intently, you know and, and. You know, she just maybe because we're both Kansas, you know, my, my birthday, the twenty nine hundred twenty seven, so she's just in tune with me in a different way. And I think that she's grasping. The concept of whatever happens today will dictate what happens in your life tomorrow. Because I realized she had a lot of plans like, you know, she's been talking about going to Harvard for the longest and she starts going to UCLA because of their gymnastics program if I'm not mistaken. Cheerlead might be I don't remember some program UCLA had this really into. But then she says she wants to be a dentist, and you know, she hears me. Talk about business, a lot in the one thing I do is, if I'm on, like a business, call, she's riding in the call me, I have the phone on speaker..

"I made a big personality who you got. Yes. Yes. He certainly is. Team this year. He was the face of the team. That's always bad. I'd say we're mocking Gabe somewhat today. Can't deny it at this moment. He still scheduled for tomorrow night. Usually when he goes out west he doesn't come on. If he does not what I will propose is one final conversation after the final game next Sunday. Yeah. Right next Tuesday or Wednesday were put Gabe on. And then we will finally if he's still here. I think we have replacement though, Al new tomorrow at nine o'clock. Playscape capital? Joe delia? Joe Delia forgave. Cafe. Let's go to David Martin. Hi, david. Hey, guys. Hey doing today. Good morning. Dave. I wanted to do a little wakeup call for the birds today. They haven't really played very well this season. What do you think? I I'm with you. It was very nerve wracking the last game with the colts. Gotta do they gotta have. They gotta be need a game. We all elements play. Well, they haven't got close to that. They had times when the defense made some big stops sleep. They've had some nice drives. I can eleven minute drive by the offense special teams has done nothing at all. I would like to see these three elements work together in a game and win one rather easily. The best way to see that is cut out all the slobby play. We the highest highest Bill. Secondly, this this pretty much what that's like a discipline. Is that coaching? What is discipline? When you look at the hotels. Oh, you had to do with the move your feet or let the guy go when he turns away from me. All right. Dave is a great special teams coach or has been but not this year when you get nailed game after game after game three more penalties on special teams on Sunday at some point. Isn't he accountable for that? Hold them accountable. You also gotta look at a. Offensively. We get a big play back because of holding a receiver. And then we make big defense. Somebody's sides or we make we make accused Ivo third now and somebody's holding clean that up boys. Playing it up. Dave. I think they're gonna do that this weekend. They need to they need to Kazan. They come home three and one. I think the Vikings are next. Yes. The game. That's a you've gotta go into that three in one. Yeah. And head yourself in the direction of the kinda you had a season white hats the game that the bills got against the Vikings. Big personality like, Tommy McDonald. Dave who you got? I got narrow riche marrow reach is a wild, man. He's on our list. Stay right there. Maryl- maryl- loves the birds Meriden heaven wins wins the super got big looking to call. He's got to make even.
