"Teaching opportunity for faculty. I'm dr lynn. Pascarella president of the association of american colleges and universities and today on the academic minute dana ferrara's associate professor of chemistry at mcdaniel college discusses. Why in the face of the global code nineteen pandemic there has been a worldwide race to discover antiviral drugs to treat and possibly even beat cove in nineteen. We're in a unique situation. Right now is there has been tremendous efforts to share scientific data to jump start target based drug discovery efforts in an unprecedented move and research. Information is being shared by scientists to essentially crowdsource secure. These crowdsourcing efforts are really what has given us a starting point to do this. Work cove in nineteen is also provided a rare opportunity to witness the speed in which compounds are being tested a process that can take months if not years is being completed in matter of weeks as chemistry professors. My colleague peter craig and i seized on this opportunity over the past two summers to work with teams of undergraduate students from a variety of disciplines in our labs on campus we have both been conducting research to find ways to attack the cove nineteen virus by designing and synthesizing compounds. That could potentially be used treat cove in nineteen in addition to other viruses. My group has been working to design small molecules to inhibit the krona viruses. Main protease or in other words to interrupt the viruses replication cycle and render it harmless a strategy that has worked in both hiv and hepatitis c. Therapy doctor craig's research group has been focused on disrupting a type of protein structure nicknamed zinc finger by searching for compounds that can disrupt the zinc fingers in corona virus protein. That is critical for its replication. The ultimate goal for both of our groups is for our research even those findings that may be considered a failure to advance the science so that pharmaceutical companies can take these compounds as leads and pursue further development. That was dana. Ferrara have mcdaniel.

"The one participant of the discussions was there any other participation and again. Talk a little bit about why that was important to include that perspective. Would you like to give your perspective. Sure i'd like to back up a little bit though just to to share a little bit of being a practitioner and a superintendent in pennsylvania of two different schools for ten years my last ten years before starting my career at mcdaniel college as a professor but then also being a vice president of the school board here in gettysburg part of my biggest motivation was and what i had a realized through very firsthand experiences in my school districts was that we as public schools and and again charter schools. Republicans as well but In the traditional school system. I think we do a pretty good job of holding. Our stakeholders are especially our students and our and our parents accountable for attendance issues behavioral issues academic issues. And so on. I still believe in a maybe i hope. Ah i'm on the right track. Is that public. Schools are still the great equalizer. And i just think There's a strong appreciation for you know. Even if some of our students are mature enough to realize it at the time But in the long run those things are are pretty important. The other thing that was really evident to me that the seen it firsthand. When some of our students many of our students that would end up returning back to our school system that ran the cyber especially the cyber charter. School is that really required. A high degree of remediation and academic assistance of those those students because of the loss learning that we were seeing across the board. And again i. I don't want to. Actually generalize there. But i would just say in general. That was definitely problematic for us. And i realized are are in the legislature are in harrisburg or trying to do the right things for their constituents and so on and i do think it's kind of a flawed way of thinking that creating this competition or the funding source leaving per pupil expenditure or much higher out Then what the church school. What is actually realizing how much that hurts. A local school. So just you're in gettysburg. Love where i'm on the board We're bleeding about four million dollars a year in and we see that rising so that was a big part of my motivation to be involved. And i and i realized that's more in line with the first question and so But again i. I would agree wholeheartedly with With eighty that we did feel important For members of the charter smoke community be involved in that. We got their perspective as well and we realize charter. Schools are here to stay and online and hybrid instruction can be a really good instructional delivery and so on but but at the same time where we would like to see a little bit more of a level playing field for everyone and that's great that's great insight and hopefully your perspective was heard by the charter school participants as well you know. Hopefully it was ability for them to hear the perspective from the public school districts as well as the task force was going about its work. Was there anything that stood out to you or anything..

"Heart radio app. You've been talking a lot lately about history and, ah Monuments that reflect and record history and and recognizing the fact that the further we get away from a recognition understanding of our nation's history. Our community's history, the less informed we are going forward, and I think it is stands to reason that were more likely to repeat. Mistakes of the past. Well, there's an effort underway now known as the West Broadway specific plan, which would include the demolition of historical landmark that is the 26 acre new Halbish a historic district. You've undoubtedly driven by it. You may or may not even know what it is. Ah, this brick Residential buildings on the south side of Broadway, just west of your avenue or street, whatever that is there, and and so I'm one of the check would chat with a historian, A local historian Clarence Cesar, who's got all of the inside on. This isn't part of an effort to To restore the integrity and the historical representation of that area. Mr Caesar. Thank you very much for joining us suffering. It's great to have in the program. Welcome aboard. S O. Tell us what this means, what it and I know some of the history in terms of Nathaniel Kali, the very first African American admitted to private practice as an attorney in Sacramento. Back in 1952. He litigated the desegregation of that area. But what does it mean to you? And from a historical perspective today in 2020 Well, Valium. Kali was definitely cheating. Part of the effort that the organization comes civil rights coalition is involved in terms of, you know, preservation. And basically you. Do you stay in one of the earliest? Not even with soaring kisses that Italian colleague undertook during, um, career here in Sacramento. Involved desegregating portion of the houses in the LBC, which at that time was second oldest Still, second oldest public housing project and basic issue was that African American tenants were isolated within the project in one particular building and segregated from the rest video community in terms of race. And then a colleague in the peas to litigate that and that effort involved filing suit against the Housing Authority. 1952. To eliminate that practice, and that's particular seat involved. The CP and a coalition of different organizations labeled charities and what was called the Sacramental Committee of Segregation in public housing, which is an inspirational body yet Solly process and sought to rectify. It usually usually got a ruling from Judge Jail. Henry, 53 just order about just Daniel here. He was one of the founding members of Wilkie's Fleury. Woman birdie at the top. Right second today, Right? Right on district For the record. I was actually cross examined by Mr Colley back in 1986 86 87. Very aggressive them. He's a good lawyer Did a good job and we notwithstanding that introduction to him, We actually hit it off just fine. And I I got to know in respecting very much very much a Renaissance man. In fact, one of the interesting things about him from a historical perspective. Is he Hey actually taught it MK George alongside Anthony Kennedy. And when Mr Kennedy was nominated for appointment at the Supreme Court Mr Colley actually came to his aid to his assistance and facilitated T help. There were civil rights critics that we're prepared to interfere and intervene. And Mr Colley actually helped to shed a little bit of light on the history of Anthony Kennedy, who ultimately, of course, was Six. That's way appointed to the highest court in the land. So what do you see going forward? If this is all to be demolished in this piece of history, eyes no longer there? What? What's the loss of that? I mean, I have my own thoughts on it. But what do you what's with explaining from here from a historical perspective from somebody who has studied history? We'll clarify a bit about the Anthony Kennedy said He was only through the suggestion of Mr Connolly and he actually testified for judicial right mid 1987. That basically confirming him and also have some issues with later decisions can be made. But based on what he knew, or any other time you thought he was making direct decision. And candy ended up on the Supreme Court in terms of the new L visa issues in terms of basically, you know, Right now, it would just start putting that Listen in making a 19 2014 and at that time was dedicated as significant in three critical areas by three criteria. One association with our full force Public housing project in 1942 is a significant in terms of historic persons. And that would be McDaniel Kali and that he loved Against a segment of the authority that was one of the earliest United States. In fact, it was uses president throughout the country in terms of litigated simulation of 1000 and three. That building was designed by four of the most significant architectural stuck, you know, in that era And so therefore it was considered to be an architectural masterpiece at that time. So if depending upon what the city chooses to Dio, what would what would you like to see? Done at that site, Recognizing the the loss of knowledge and historical perspective that it will be realized of it, if it is to be demolished. What What would what would your brothers be? Well again. These are questions that are usually raised when buildings of this level of significance are considered to be a threat or under sort of demolition. And so basically, we would like to city to consider any alternative to total and complete demolition possible because Allowing the buildings themselves with the layout of the structures in terms of how they laid out a proper are in many ways from what you would find in a public house in the country that most people associate public housing with high rise You know buildings with narrow hallways, Interior Always, you know, a kind of unfriendly and confining and this was an open campus situation that allow people to eat around outside. And Tio interact with each other in a way that was more reflective of more of a suburban type of steel. If you go back east Tio person like South of the Midwest would find many structures that are laid out very much. So are our particular. Our particular focus is to try to maintain the integrity that it's possible and also to establish. There are McDaniel College Center, which would be kind of an institutional that way. Basically.

"The flu and the common cold and other flus and viruses are all part of a corona our family of viruses the question is how do we know that when we're testing people and they have a corona virus how do we know that that is the that's the Chinese flu virus and not something else okay hold so so let me just briefly review here so the the flu virus the influenza virus is different from the coronavirus different family of viruses different structure of the of the virus molecule different from other common cause some other common cold viruses as well so the coronavirus family includes viruses that typically cause the common cold include sars that includes members but the this has several mutations better very specific their mutations to DNA to the R. and a in the in the virus and what you've got is is the test that we do test very specifically for those areas of the corona virus that are unique to this one that originated in China so it's it's a it's a very space if it's done properly and again this was an issue whether whether it's done propping other countries the ones that you're going to get here in this country are very specific for that virus though the false positive rate because what you're suggesting is that you know if you tested well maybe some other coronavirus no the ones we're going to do here are very very specific if you test positive for that it is you know I'm sure with ninety five nine apps and likely you have the Chinese version the Chinese mutation version of background of our president called other Xena phobic into racist all kinds of stuff that retail characterizing it as I was trying to save this is totally Chinese virus he was close enough open races for shutting down flights from China into the United States that's the only reason we don't look like Italy right now what is the president's stop the middle segment for the Middle East respiratory syndrome using the for the printer that's right yeah that's right and Hong Kong flu right read an article yesterday in The New York Times and the referring to the nineteen eighteen influenza not Spanish the Spanish no no I don't I don't this is this is so it is political correctness is ridiculous and it's harmful one like one of the caller said we better get the message from this this is from China and China is not a friend Dr Michael is with us with Congress congressman Andy Harris wow that's exactly what I wanted to say China is not our friend they want to take over the world with their currency that's going to really put a big crimp in our and our lifestyle beyond what we're doing now it would be remember Joe Biden a year ago said China is our friend yeah not sure well well hopefully that's what this election of members you know again someone who thinks China is our friend and someone who thinks China is our enemy anyway I wanted to address two issues I'm concerned that they control ninety percent of the drugs we have to take that back within our country again and the the second leaving on what did it have talk about the thing they're worried about is the ventilators why don't we have a Manhattan Project to build lots of ventilator so we don't have to go through this again next year sure so the bottom line is that we do have ventilators both in the military stockpile as well and because obviously the military prepares for for war so their ventilators in the DOD stockpile there also ventilators in the health and Human Services what's called a strategic national stockpile the SNS these are thousands and thousands of ventilators you know I'm sure one of the things that we will consider as we go back and and one thing that I've urged for years now is increasing the funding for the strategic national stockpile you know I think instead of instead of some of the programs of the federal government waste money on I think that's not a waste of money to actually have a strategic national stockpile with regards to the drugs you're absolutely right it's not it's not it if you look at raw materials yes that there's a lot to but it actually finished drug products is very very small number from China but there's no reason those raw materials have to be made in China with they can be made here Austin for you though it's nice to say we got to bring it back how do you make that happen you incentivize you just incentivize companies to break into it to make make those products you always remember well you provide a tax cut to companies that produce pharmaceutical the starting products of the raw materials for pharmaceuticals specifically to do it to target it to companies that bring things back from countries that are not dependable supply chain side congressman and doctors thank you so much for spending as much time as you did with everybody stay well out there keep the social distancing and you know take a deep breath you know we'll get through this thanks Andy for as as I know the weather yesterday you're sitting around a four feet from a Sean and he's also about four feet from you together that's eight feet so you're good well we've got all the equipment there's other times you're gonna die Scott Eddie at the C. against I. twenty "It has multiple levels. It is very, very special. It's an architectural gem. This one is located at thirty seven thirty eight Bixler church road in Westminster zip code is two one one five eight such a beautiful private property with its own private road. If you're thinking about living in a private retreat in a very modern contemporary home on twenty five acres, but yet really minutes from grocery stores and McDaniel college and a karaoke county airport. Please give me a call. I think this is the by of the century another property that I have that is a two bedroom. And Dan condominium without steps. It is a garden apartment in Stevenson village, the only one, I think of its kind where you can actually get from your car to the inside of your condo with the use of a Walker or a wheelchair. No steps whatsoever. Three bedrooms, two baths. It has an outside patio area. It has a covered front area, thinking about buying a condominium. That's a nice size. Give me a call, again, you can reach me for ten five three zero twenty four hundred and you can also see almost all of these properties on my website, at home, Rome dot com. Or again, call me after the show and I'll be happy to tell you more about them another new listing that I have is in an area. Call Kimberly west that zip code is two one two four four. This is a three bedroom. Two bath, its brick and siding. It's a corner lot, and it's a semi detached house. But it's still a rancher the entire living quarters are on one level. So again, if you had trouble with steps, you've just didn't wanna go up and down them. You've got everything on that first floor, and you still have a full basement. That's ready to finish. This one is again. At thirty three sixteen Ben valley road in the Kimberley, west area, and that zip code is two one two four four and I wanted to tell you a little bit about. Well, let's see. I'm to tell you about how some of the properties that I sell are usually quite unusual. They're quite unique. In some way, they may be a challenge to sell. I think it's become my specialty my niece to find these unusual properties. And then find interesting people to move into them. It's a challenge to sell a house that others may say, is either to unusual. They'll say forget, it won't apprai-, so you have to drop the price or it's been on the market way too long. Or the main thing I hear something must be wrong with it. That's why it's on the market so long, and as real estate ages. We've been taught to get a home listed for the absolute lowest possible price to price it for multiple offers to price it for a fast sale now..

"Opening. Two hours late in the world county. Baltimore city. Baltimore county. Carol seasonal Frederick Harford. Howard montgomery. Prince George's county is all open two hours late is ours. Schools in southern York county, Pennsylvania Howard came to the college opening. It's ten Stratford university at ten and the Rondo community college opening at eleven. Baltimore City community college two hours late Carol came to college opening at ten thirty Howard community college opening at ten and McDaniel college opening at noon, we're talking with EMMY award winning anchor reporter Rafer Weigel FOX thirty to Chicago Rafer regarding the Nigerian brothers, and you're probably better expert at pronouncing their name than I am. Yeah. They they apparently went in before talk to Chicago PD. It looked like Chicago PD was about to charge them. But yet we don't hear anything about it. Was there a plea deal cut? Or are they still at jeopardy here? What's the status? Well, that's interesting because we figured there was a plea deal because they were taken into custody and arrested and held for forty eight hours for interrogation, but when I talked to her lawyer their lawyer last night Schmitt, she said, there was no plea deal. There was no unity, and that's because she said they've done nothing wrong. But it's also interesting because they have been taken into the Cook County courthouse shrouded in secrecy. And that is something that the Cook County sheriff rarely grants. I mean, the last time I knew or recall anybody getting that kind of that kind of treatment of Cook County courthouse when Oprah Winfrey jury duty. So they've they've got agreed to cooperate police. The granted some kind of privilege, but she made it very clear clear deal, no immunity, but there's a the evidence is mounting that they took part in this. So I I'm. That doesn't make sense to me. But we have to go by what she said hell does this Rafer play into the hands of President Trump who is consistently complaining about fake news? Well, it doesn't bode well for my profession if just by virtue of the fact that people very early on took it and ran with it as fat, and there's an old adage in journalism that says if your mother says she loves to check it out and a lot of people fail that old adage that is journalism one one. And you know, I'm generally a defender of my profession, we take a lot of hits. I'm very proud to be a journalist. I love journalism. It's such an important thing. And you know, censoring us is something that I take personal if you're with. But this one really puts knock on her credibility. I mean at the end of the day, you know, most of us in the local news, I think we did our job, but I I have this handled it and this follows right on the heel. This. This follows run on the hills on the Covington kids absolutely all they had to do. Because this is what I did. And when stuff like this happens. I always go to local reporters because you guys on, you know, the beat, you know, the area know, the, you know, the scene and I picked up on your reporting. And I immediately knew that there was the story was not adding up, and let's be careful here. But the rest of the national media ran with it just like they did with the Covington story this is now besides being responsible journalism. Do you think? Now, there's a tendency for advocacy journalism in the national meeting one hundred percents. Unfortunately, my has become a lot more partisan. I used to not think so I mean, I used to say the media's role is just lazy. But when I look at what happened here. I'm you know, I'm. It's affected my opinion, a little bit of some of the people in my profession. So I mean, we've become so culturally divided things have become so partisan. You know, we have to stay right down the middle is that because a lot of these journalists the Rafer have are basically, you know, graduates from schools where they've been taught by very very liberal professors. Well, I don't know about that. I mean, I know that know good journalism is in partisan. So I mean. It's our job to be critical have critical thinking, so you know, it's possible. I don't know. I mean, I do a lot of people who are liberal who I work with a lot of people who are a conservative. It'd be newsrooms are just like any other workplace, you know, you're going to have people on both sides of the political aisle. But as far as this goes, you know, the larger problem, I look I hope it's a wake up call. That's all I can hope for did. You get any pushback from inside your newsroom. I'm going to knock comment on that. I had I had to ask that question. But again, I certainly understand your situation any excellent job Rafer. Thanks for reporting, the facts, and and getting to the bottom of the story and people should continue to follow your reports on FOX thirty two thanks for taking the time to join us this morning.
