Classified British Defence Documents Found at Bus Stop

"Some sensitive military papers that have been lost. It sounds like a sloppy spy novel, but it's for real. A cache of sensitive documents loaded with details concerning the British military. Afghanistan and Russia were found at a bus stop. An anonymous individual spotted the soggy, nearly 50 page heat behind the bench in Kent, southeast of London. An employee from the Ministry of Defense reported the missing last week. The papers contain info regarding the UK's military presence in Afghanistan. As well as notes about a royal naval vessel, the H. M s defense and its cruising the Black Sea off the Crimean coast and Russia's reaction to it. Britain's Ministry of Defence refused further comment but said an investigation has been launched. Karen McCue,

Manhattan, New York City, courthouses adapt to COVID so trials can return

"Jury trials and jury duty or both. Back Fox is Karen McCue has the story of how they're trying to get it done on one of America's busiest district's the wheels of justice, just about ground to a halt over the past year, thanks to the coronavirus, those waiting for their day in court reports to wait a lot longer than imagined. But the two federal courthouses in Manhattan found a way to get things moving again after months of in activity. By creating a pandemic safe environment. How by introducing air filtered plexi glass booths for witnesses and an audio system that allows lawyers to whisper to what another without spreading their germs to disinfecting documents. Before they change hands. The covert friendly courtrooms could become the new standard for halls of justice

Captain Kate McCue on Getting Ready to Set Sail Safely

"Florida captain It's a year later, since you and I spoke, it's a year later, since your last revenue cruise the Centers for Disease Control basically had a no sale order in place, which they were they lifted conditionally at the end of October. But they're about 75 different things that every cruise liner every cruise ship has to do before they can cruise again. Tell me the kind of stuff you're doing now, You know, you mentioned getting the ship shipshape. But this is a different kind of definition of ship shape, isn't it? That's right. And we have a healthy male panel that was formed with experts. Short side. And this is an evolving process. So every time you know the CDC has an advancement or or new requirement, they are working that into our healthy sales are healthy Male panel is working that into the healthy sale plan and right now where we are is and we're waiting for Phase two, which is approval to have these mock cruises, and I have to say When the idea of the Mark Cruises was introduced to the public, you know, 250,000 people almost instantly signed up to volunteer to go on these cruises. So when we have that green light, we will start manning our ships. With the appropriate member crew members because that's going to be an incredible repatriation effort to the ship because our crew members come, for example, from this liberty edge. On from 75 different countries. So you know, clearing people from from all of these countries and also once they get to whichever ship it is, there's quarantine currently involved. There's PCR testing for Cove it involved So there's there's quite a bit but this healthy failed plan on panel is they're adapting to what we're finding is as new changes come from the CDC. And what are you doing for the physical planet? You're changing ventilation floor plans. Are you changing dining hours or entertainment venues?

Kristin Stultz Pressley On Dorothy Fields And Her Impact On Broadway Musical Theater

"Well hello kristin welcome back to the podcast while it is so good to be back with you. Thank you for having me. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching your podcast as it has grown. You've done some really exciting things and talk to some incredible people and so it's been a real joy to watch it will relations by the way. Thank you for being a listener as well as a guest but yeah it's good to have you back and so what was it. That drew you to dorothy fields. And why did you want to write a book about her well. To be honest. I started studying. Dorthy fields a master's candidate at the university of kentucky and one of the bugaboos about graduate school. They expect you to have a research project and the real catch is. It needs to be something. No one else's ever researched before so it can be pretty tricky because If it's something that no one's ever researched before how are you going to know about it right. And how are you gonna find research about exactly so you're really starting from scratch. So i went to graduate school bride. Probably twenty three twenty four year old new. I wanted to study. Musical theater was in the theater. Department had no idea what that specific topic would be that. I would research for the next two years. Actually i was planning on doing a phd. So would have been the next four years. I knew it would be related to musicals. I knew what related to the golden age of musical. So i was thinking cole. Porter irving berlin oscar hammerstein. I loved lyrics and Each of these wrote lyrics so that was something that was already drawn to. But every time i talk with my advisor she was We know everything about quarter. Everything's been done about oscar hammerstein. There've been books written about and by irving berlin says she would just keep shooting down and rightfully so. Because i needed what was going to be my contribution right. What was what was going to be my something that i could add to the academy so to speak. And so as a person of faith. I literally prayed and prayed and prayed and prayed and one day in her office. It was as if i saw this blinding vision across my eyes and it just was the name dorothy fields and i knew nothing about dorothy fields. Except that i recognized her name from the show card from sweet charity. Nineteen sixty six charity And i had seen that show card. So much of course had the cd collection. So i am the the cd case very much like the show card. And so i just blurted out. What about dorothy fields adviser stopped. And said i don't know anything about dorothy fields and so that was two thousand three. I went home and it was the very early days of googling there. There was not much on the internet yet. But there was enough that i could see my goodness. This woman wrote the way you look tonight. This woman wrote. I'm in the mood for love. This woman wrote on sunny side of the street. This woman was the brain power behind any. Get your gun. She came up with the idea to do a show about any oakley. And so i went back to my adviser at a different class to that night and told her. What do you think about this. This is what i found out. She says let's do it so it's been almost two decades that i've been at this but i continued that work not only for masters but also for my doctoral dissertation which i ended up doing my phd at the university of georgia. But i took dorothy with me. When i went from lexington to athens. Dorothy came along for the ride. You basically were looking at her life from you. Know more academic educational standpoint. So what makes this different from those dissertations. That's actually a great question you know. It's funny because when people ask me what the book is about or have asked me over the past twenty years what. I was researching. And i would mention dorothy fields. And everybody's i don't know her but then you mentioned song titles you say hey big spender. She wrote that or pick yourself up. She wrote that or on the sunnyside of the street. She wrote that everybody gets that same. Like a ha. I know her but they didn't know that they knew her in my master's thesis. That's one question that i asked was why her name. Not as well known as porter and all of those men not only were they collaborators of hers they were very well loved colleagues who esteemed. Dorothy is one of them. And there's a couple of suggestions for that one is. She was never part of a team that that lasted for a long time. So by that. I mean rodgers and hammerstein that that is an iconic dua were Rodgers and hart even or irving berlin wrote music and lyrics cole porter music and lyrics but dorthy fields for it with eighteen different composers over a five decade long career so there was never easy to pinpoint her as. Oh well. that's i mean the closest would be jimmy. Mccue who was first collaborator of fields in. Bq song where it just it just there. That never happened with her. It never became a catchphrase. Another suggestion is because she was very self effacing. You know if she was asking an interview. Oh we'll tell us about this experience. Riding with arthur schwartz or whatever she would immediately turn it around and said well let me tell you how great. It is work with arthur. You know she would always shine. The spotlight on her collaborator And so that's another reason. Why perhaps she didn't seek the spotlight and it wasn't until later in her career. She became concerned with legacy and she hired a publicist at and that happened in the late. Nineteen fifties as. I think her her brother died unexpectedly. Her husband died unexpectedly her her dear friends and collaborators beginning to die and i think she realized at that point. Hey maybe i am concerned with being. And i do need help to accomplish that.

Update On The Leadership Conference In Sweden

"The world is ripe and ready for restarting and looking ahead. So where better to get a clear and uninterrupted view than from the eastern Swiss Alps and that is the setting for the chiefs. Monaco's. Conference which welcomes visionaries, founders and industry leaders for look ahead how business and indeed the whole world could move forward from here well. Is, tyler lay and he students all through the day's event at Subaru in summer. It's and I'm delighted to say he's taken a moment out of the conference to join us now to tell us what is happening where he is tyler apart from the obvious attraction from the chairlift right to an Alpine dinner, it must feel good to bring people together again. Good afternoon. Good afternoon Emma absolutely, and I think that has been one of the probably. Comment people just feel so good to be out in the world again and just meeting people in a setting which feels pretty normal I. I don't think there's much going on here that would make you think otherwise that we are still in in the midst of course cases rising in Europe, we have Orrin teams being imposed and and and borders also going up as well. So I I think that is. One of the people are just happy to be together and be listening to great ideas and and and I think also to be challenged. A little bit as well. We'll Tennessee little bit more about these challenges because people are coming together facing momentous challenges. What is it the world trying to focus on here? Well number, we just had a failed bomb nora failed bomb is the CEO of vitro. Of course, one of the world's most respected design brands I imagine in many many listeners right now are right likely sitting on a beatrice AU faux or chair or stool or in front of a desk. Here's a business, which is which is completely focused on the topic of what is going to happen to our city centers you know will work from home account for fifty percent of the workforce is going to be twenty percent. So we tackle that issue. It. With her and it was interesting. You know she was talking about are we may be moving into a world of spoke Yes. They'll be a main office in a city that will there almost almost More like owned and operated co working spaces where people come together. So that was one topic but then we just had a our he's the head of the the intermeshed. With the Red Cross and the and he was looking at at the current crises. The fact that we have a pandemic Emma but of course, get thirty messy parts of the world is he talks about this hasn't gone away and he's just a literally almost fresh off the plane from a mission in Mali, And Burkina into Hell region. What I find interesting is is the names of the people you've gathered that. We oversee have world of of of of vitro, but then. We have the head of security policy in the Swiss Federal Department of Defence Civil Protection and sport you mentioned now we have the head of the red. Cross. These are figures from the world of dealing with emergencies. Does that reflect the kind of times that we're in? Will it does because you're going to have an informed view about about risk and where the world is going. Then I think you do need people who are at the pointy end that that point he and might be how is a small but very economically successful. Country like Switzerland, how is it going to navigate geopolitical issues that wide Switzerland potentially need forty new fighter aircraft at a time when people talk of drones and and country, which is known as being neutral, and at the same time, you also want to hear from someone who's the head of risk for one of the biggest banks who can of course, apply some of these elements as well to a of. Course, the end consumer, the person who wants to go in byproducts from that that bank and how does that impact your day to day? How are we able to look ahead at the moment I mean is what we're talking about today stuff that we need to deal with at that pointy end in the next six months to one year or is there any sense yet that people can sink a little further ahead? Well I think actually North Alabama interesting because someone else oppose a similar question about short-term. What are you doing right now with marketing just how do you look at advertising? How do you promote a brand right now how do you stay top of mind and then what you do long term and her response with where we're a family company from Basel we have time and and so of course, we continue to develop an invest in great furniture and we and we take we take a long-term view. And yes you also have to be mindful of of the realities of up today as well. I mean is she's a little later on the conference to be talking about. The chiefs as a future when you talk about sustainability. And yesterday, the president of the European commissioners of a funder line was saying that we will rebuild our way out as a covert pundit DEMOC following an entirely green agenda. But when you have things like you know you're orderbook isn't as full as it should be your staff coming back from furlough and you're thinking, how am I going to make it through the next six months and people are saying actually you need to be green a you need to think about this you need to think about that. The priorities become quite quite challenging they. Absolutely. And I think that you know that that is one of the topics I mean, how much does you could talk about sustainability all you want but you know does. Your does your program, which of course has the best intentions is that we need to take a back seat for because you know that was going to involve retooling your factory. You knew that it was going to actually mean of course, upping the prices or accepting a more expensive supply chain, and maybe that has to get not kicking the grass necessarily, but it maybe has to drift out maybe three years I according to your plan and i. think that is also something we've heard you today is well, if if you're going to do these things aren't easy a lot of his. Let's walk at first before we talk and try to either talk green credentials are sustainability agenda and I think actually on that probably the one thing that I think is really coming out of the conference so far I'm as is. Being a by the let's let's let's invest in things that last And it really interesting to hear. You have MS failed I'm talking about you know if you go and buy an eames chair and I believe you're probably sitting in an email chair right now if I know it studio you're in. Those comes with a thirty year guarantee. Extraordinary and you know that has to be now and again you know is the entire chair perfectly sustainable no but it's not going to be in in five years either it's absolutely not in it's been comfortable for very long time finally looking into this afternoon. You're taking the floor talking to us about a few things that have caught your eye that you like and that if it's inspired you I mean we we have to be lifted out of this somehow what are you talking about them? Well. After lunch I I do a spin around the world and of course, the look at some things that yeah. Basic things that I that I experienced in everyday life, which which I think are are interesting that we we might need we might need more of so and I think probably one thing I was going to slide them. And you'll appreciate this. There's a lot of Austria and they're the world maybe needs a little bit. You know even though of course I'm standing in Switzerland at the moment. But if I if I look across the the mountains look across the border I know that Austria lies beyond and there's definitely whether it's brands whether it's the urban interventions that the world needs a little bit more Austria it full of wisdom of real and I'm just Sitting next to our affairs at a Christian mccue is half Australian I've never seen warranties thumbs up in all my days time. White Nationalism in the White House: Katie McHugh Kept Receipts

"It's no secret that members of the trump administration up to and including trump himself are parroting the views of white nationalist and white extremist groups. These organizations are tied into outright media outlets like Breitbart and others where they spread this propaganda to the masses. We're going to try something a little different today. I'll be joined by a guest. Co Host. Hossan Ahmad is an immigration attorney and anti white nationalist activist from Virginia. Hossan has been deeply involved in obtaining the archived writings of John. Panton one of the men. Behind the current white nationalist movement in America Hossan connected me to Katie McHugh. Katie is a former white nationalist. Who has renounced her views in his working. Hard to undo the damage. She did when she held them. She's a former staffer for Breitbart and other alt-right media where she was in constant correspondence with Stephen Miller at the trump white house. She's exposed those emails and the deep ties of Miller into the white nationalist movement in America voice box he's overlap between trump's message white nationalist ideology he has shown us that the majority of Americans support are sort of message. You know what yeah make. America great again fell the wall. Pick these people out. This is my country. This this all belongs to me. Trump demurred when asked whether he'd condemned supportive comments from former Ku Klux Klan. Leader David Duke. I have to look at the group I mean. I don't know what group you're talking about. You wouldn't want me to condemn a group that I know. The person is dead and nineteen injured after a speeding vehicle drove into a group of protesters. Your leader downtown Charlottesville very fine people on both sides so we just got a new batch of emails from Breitbart reporter Katya Q. The Southern Poverty Law Center has made public excerpts of emails sent by White House. Senior adviser. Stephen Miller was a key figure shaping immigration policy or president trump the email messages for fifty thousand sixteen. Show Miller support white nationalist website and ideologies. My name is Katie mccue. I've exposed eight far-right extremists in the past fifteen months by working with civil rights groups and legendary nonprofits. I'm very excited now. In the stage of my life to help the most vulnerable in society including people of Color immigrants those who practice Islamic faith and those who this car presidential administration opposes the mouse and seeks to punish through use of authoritarian policies. Sorry Not Sorry so katy you spent a bit of time in the alright. What is the difference if you can explain to US between the alright a white supremacy and white nationalism? What are some of the core beliefs that you're aware of as part of this movement? Well I can say I think we should begin with aristotle here. I don't want to sound pretentious but everything is on a trajectory this is also just basic calculus so one of the things. Aristotle spoke about was habit and one thing you witness with the outright because the media treated them as a truly humorous force that's just online and it's backing Donald Trump and it's young people. The fact is everything that they said. Ironically I'm making air quotes eventually became ironic so whenever people thought they were quote unquote trolling about saying the nineteenth amendment should be repealed and you had white supremacist media figure. Richard Spencer eventually meeting. No I don't believe women should have the right to vote all these memes and things you see on twitter and the way that these mobs were organized so much so that they became. It was almost like blunt force trauma when it came to harassment for media figures. They were not joking. And in the case too with someone like Stephen Miller who's one of the most powerful people in the US government especially when it comes to people who are not white. So who is Stephen Miller? And why is it so important that we understand his thinking? Stephen Miller is one of the closest advisers to president trump. He is the architect of trump's immigration policy and also has the president's ear on foreign policy matters. Stephen Miller for his entire career had anti immigrant. Leanings for some people philly with the alright because it's an amorphous group and doesn't have a membership roll with you. Know I mean. They viewed on white people and people who practice the Islamic faith as not only dangerous individuals but an existential threat to the country. And this does tie into eugenics which unfortunately America has a very dark history with eugenics Ray Science and a history which John drew from and help shape the anti immigrant agenda that has sought renewed energy from the emergence of the outright and renewed energy from the trump campaign and which we now see the full force turned against the most desperate vulnerable people in the world for punish purely because of their country of origin their ethnicity in the face that they practice kitty. You seem so articulate and passionate and human and when we paint these pictures are head of the other side we sort of create these villains. I think I WANNA be respectful for your privacy and safety but I was wondering if you could talk a little bit about how you got caught up in the movement so that we can have a better understanding as to how other people get caught up in the movement. Thank you for asking that because I think that everyone's path is different but buying could help explain some of the groundwork for other young people currently trapped in this. Who Don't quite know how to get out. The outright on the far-right are very much like a gang. You know there's a no snitching policy and I think that many many young people especially let's say trump does not win reelection in twenty twenty this year. A lot of young people are going to wonder. How do I get out of this? And how do I reconnect with other people again and have a healthy loving life full of good friendships? Good connections across backgrounds. So I will just say that I'm from Pennsylvania regular conservative town and I was raised like I think the joke is. You're born a lapsed Catholic. So that was my upbringing. Regular childhood must very nerdy was constantly reading and I was politically inclined. People always talk about two thousand four election. People were very excited about George W Bush. Because it's a Red County and two thousand eight of course with the banking crisis. Things got much more serious and of course the Iraq war still going on so I was chatting with one of my best friends. Her Dad and I was regular Republican fully supporting the Iraq war in in the war in Afghanistan and he said well. Why don't you read this person named Joe So brand? Joseph O'Brien was a former senior editor for national review. He was fired by William F Buckley because he could not control his anti-semitism. I ate him alive. Almost like a neurological virus and I'm eighteen. I had never met someone of poop practice. Jewish faith Jewish background nothing. I didn't understand anti-semitism and I was reading the Essay. That was recommended to me. Call the reluctant anarchists sing. How all government is evil in the constitution has already been so violated. We just need to go back to something. Like pre articles of confederation. Okay this is very important to understand. Is that there is a serious libertarian. Too Far right pipeline very serious and the far right of course is just steeped in. Eugenics steepen utterly discredited on Justifiable Race

"mccue" Discussed on First Mondays

"Hello, I is this is Shannon McCue mule this week. First Mondays received the following writing from a woman who had two requests that she remain anonymous and that her writing be read. If at all, by a woman, what follows are her words unedited. I think we can all acknowledge that people find it difficult in the moment to stand with women who accuse powerful men of sexual misconduct, particularly when that man is on a path to having even more power. It is not difficult to understand why who wants to eight a king maker or the kingmakers friends who may be kingmakers in their own ways. Access to power is a form of power and people give that up when they listen to. And I mean actually listened to much less side with an accuser rather than the accused that power imbalance and the incentives, it creates makes things really hard since it will force a lot of people either to stay on the sidelines or to actively seek ways to signal there, an echo poise which allows the status quo to continue. It is also helpful to think about what happens after that. That is what happens after there is misconduct by or an allegation of misconduct by a powerful man. Let's assume nothing happens to the powerful man and that he goes on to assume more power. Then things get worse at that point. Some of the people who believe the woman and some of the people who spoke out in support of the woman will have powerful incentives to treat the powerful man is just an ordinary powerful man. Access to power is still power time will pass and human tendency to just normalize things. We'll take over the people who don't do that. The people who refuse to treat the powerful man as just any other powerful man, we'll be punished ostracized uninvited, not treated a serious, not lawyers because they have feelings and emotions, and so on. That will mean the power structures will become even more dominated by people who act like nothing happened power then is available only to people who can pretend like nothing happened. Some people can do that. It's not because they're not tough enough or smart enough. They just can't do it or won't out of principle personal experience. Some combination of the two or something else. When we think about what our institutions look like, an who has power, sometimes as fact gets lost. You want to know why there aren't a lot of women in the clerkship pipeline or graduating at the top of their class or arguing in court on behalf of private parties. It's silly to think about that without confronting the reporting and Dolly Olympic and Susan Mathews article on slate about the toxic atmosphere at Yale Law School that a bunch of women had to navigate and some probably chose to opt out of sexual overtures and harassment Perron professor who is in a position to get them clerks ships. Some women will make it through that process. Some women won't ever be subject to those burdens and uncomfortable situations. They will be the lucky ones and they will wreck. And with that, that they are the lucky one because they're professor wasn't trying to sleep with them and making that effort obvious to your entire law school class. Some people won't be so lucky more women than men will find themselves in that situation. So the ability to participate in and navigate a system that's dominated by or at least comprised in part by men who prey on humiliate or undermine women or have done. So even a long time ago, weeds out a bunch of women and it does so at so many different stages and so many different ways. Who do you think is going to have a more difficult time for getting the testimony credible allegation of attempted rape or sexual assault? Who do you think is going to have a more difficult time treating a man who's been accused of that as just a regular dude? Who do you think is going to have a hard time working so hard and fighting to be a part of the elite circles in which that man runs? Who do you think is going to find it more difficult to work with or work for the people who were silent when that man was accused of his conduct who is going to find it more difficult to work with or work for the people who were publicly mocking mocking. Other people mostly women for take. The allegation seriously and expressing some feelings in the process. It's not hard to guess..

"mccue" Discussed on The RobCast

"Let me talk about what this means in the way that we actually live our lives in sort of every day warp and move sort of ways episode 99 of the rob cast i interviewed a fantastic woman named leaf mccue and she sat in this chair right in front of me here and she told about what it was like for her 11yearold daughter to die and what it's like as a mother to have given eleven years to carrying for one that came from you and then to lose your daughter and i know so many of you mentioned that episode like it just did something to you and what she talked about is how after that the pain was so great she and her husband aaron realized we need to rebuild our lives so they put the word out and facebook that they were getting rid of furniture and they sold their house and they literally got rid of their stuff and started over sort of systematically went through their lives and says let's just reboot the whole thing and once you go down that road legvold seriously let's start over like everything wants ended it and let's start again and so the interview was deeply moving but it was also really really interesting how they had just sort of systematically gone about this and i was sander questions like so what about somebody who's been through something horrific dramatics them a breakup a loss of divorce failure what do you say to them she's like oh yeah you can for sure reboot your life and it will be better.
