"America is back," Biden tells Munich Security Conference
"By video link at the Munich Security Conference. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron also spoke NPR's Rob Schmitz was watching from Berlin. Welcome, Rob. Hey, Howdy President Biden emphasized today that he is reaffirming America's commitment to the transatlantic relationship. What else did he have to say? He had a lot to say. First off. He really hit home that Europe is a cornerstone of America's approach to the rest of the world, and that the transatlantic alliance is more important than ever, he pointed out. The West faces a new set of challenges. He mentioned the strategic threat of China as well as Russia and, of course, the Corona virus pandemic. But he said one of the biggest challenges the West faces now is that as we gradually come out of this pandemic, he said, many people in the world are wondering if autocracy Has emerged as a better system for governance. And he said the U. S and Europe need to work together to show the world that democracy will prevail. Here's what he said Democracy doesn't happen by accident. We have to defend it. Fight for it, Strengthening renew it. We have to prove Our model is in a relic of history. It's a single best way to revitalize the promise of our future. And the response from Germany or France. You know, Merkel and the crone got right down to business. Both of them reacted with the kind of a laundry list of items that have built up over the past four years that need to be done multilateral approach to vaccinations for the developing world, reinvigorating The Iran nuclear deal. The Paris climate accord Afghanistan, you name it, these air all issues that from the European perspective have suffered from neglect under the Trump administration. And have been festering over the past four years. I spoke to Sudha David will of the German Marshall Fund after the event, and she told me it's clear. Both Merkel and McCrone are thrilled that Biden has reaffirmed the transatlantic alliance. Europe needs a strong U. S. And buying, I should say, because Merkel is now a lame duck. She's going to be inward looking as she looks to preserve her legacy, which has taken some knocks lately because Germany has not done a great job dealing with the second phase of pandemic. And Micron is going to be busy with an election in 2022. But are the French president? Macron did say that the EU needs to be more involved with its own security going forward, and we've been hearing that for the last couple of years. That was a complaint from former President Trump that that you needed to spend more on its own defense. Are they actually doing that? They are And as you mentioned, your former president, Trump spend years badgering them about this. And in today's speeches, both Merkel and McCrone pointed out there spending more than ever on defense and Grown even went so far to say that Europe should spend even more in the future because, he said, the U. S is clearly focused on China and in the Pacific region more than ever. And that means that Europe needs to step up its own defense to better manage threats in its own neighborhood. That's NPR's Rob Schmitz. Joining us from Berlin. Rob, Thanks for your reporting. Thank you. What is the point of buying something now? If you can't

Trump wants to welcome Russia back into G7
"You president trump has landed in France is on route to fear it's the site of the G. seven summit this weekend and John what do you expect him to accomplish is he going to try and come home and have it labeled the G. eight by the time he's finished that seems to be talked to shore when the president came out and talked to us at the White House on Wednesday and since then neither pundits nor politicians have stopped talking about it needless to say the commander in chief is not either the president brought up the scenario of finally letting Vladimir Putin's Russia back in the community of industrial Titans in other words make the G. seven G. A. again and as you pointed out he has no problems with it Ukraine which led to the expulsion of Russia following Moscow's decision to see is the Crimean part of the Ukraine that all happened before I was president Mr trump told us now he wants to move on there's some question whether other countries feel the same way he said that a manual McCrone and he had talked about this but that chrome was on board and we agree that Russia should get back in and we should be talking to them directly instead of communicating through channels and other means of communication with the Kremlin not so says McCraw on the French president insisting he still committed to keeping that Russia ouch with the community of industrial nations it's going to be an exciting discussion and it will be interesting to see whether the great deal maker Quinn win over any new compatriots on this so the seven members were one of them what's the advantage to the other six if they do allow Russia back in well the advantages clearly are that there is another trading partner that they can deal with that they will have openings to other countries that they may not necessarily have a trade agreement with right now and clearly the advantage would be for Russia Russia right now deals in the oil it's a major supplier to European countries notably to Germany and it would be opened up to do more business in Europe my guess would be a good part of this is just simply respect being a member of the club and when Russia sits down with the United States and Germany and France and India and Japan and all these other powers there is a scintilla of respect that comes with just having a seat at the table my guess is that this may take some time and it may also get Russia to renounce Hey Johnny over other parts of what was once the former Soviet empire is Vladimir Putin ready to do this is the price of admission not sure at all about that the president hasn't always had agreements with under the Merkel and Emmanuel mark Cronin on those of the G. seven but he will have a new ally in Great Britain he certainly well the new prime minister is someone who's been called the Donald Trump of the United Kingdom that's Boris Johnson Joe who came to power after being the campaign chairman for the leave committee in the battle over brexit in two thousand sixteen Donald Trump alone among world leaders was very vocal in saying brexit was a good idea and actively endorsed Boris Johnson for prime minister during Theresa may is twilight days in office so she's not going to be a lone wolf at this tree seven meeting will be a wolf pack there and it will be interesting to watch beau Jole and Donald working together one postscript to this of the White House in briefing reporters on the G. seven emphasize president will have an extensive discussion with another leader often considered a lone wolf India's prime minister

Reading President Trump and first lady Melania Trump. The two world leaders were take to the stage with those World War, Two veterans among them. So many of the veterans we have followed president mccrone walking up to stand freiden from Pennsylvania. President Trump, we've Vincent Unger from Florida. Later. I would you the distinction of night of the beach in of onum? We were waiting for STAN right after. Congratulations. You didn't tell us yesterday. Didn't tell me either the French had reached out to him. But STAN had no idea honor this grant. What was it like up there on that stage? Thrilling. Dream, they're only about three hundred foreigners in the world who ever been given that French honor that you were given as a. Which in honor is at ninety six MRs stands first time back to Normandy for years. He would not talk about what he saw partly because of the friend. He lost my best buddy isn't it was Monday, then we relate this tighter in brothers would give our life through each other without a worded. Then. World Leaders Commemorate 75th Anniversary of D-Day
"Talk about this morning's commemorations in Normandy, you were there. What were your impressions? And what stuck with you not gonna forget today for quite a long time? It really was and mazing born just a gorgeous day, and the first time I've seen the, the beaches of Normandy, and these massive cliffs, and, and you had to get a scale of what, what, what just get an idea of, what may have been like back then, and then to be there with, you know, ten thousand other people who come from all over the world to be part of the ceremony. And then, you know, Trump comes in his helicopter, mccrone comes in on his hell. Copter, and it's just a day to commemorate really one of the seminal moments in the relationship between the net, just these two countries. But this transatlantic alliance, you know throughout the west. So it was it was really amazing to see to say nothing. I should say of the veterans of World War, Two that are in here. I mean there's, there's a there's a handful of d day veteran still with us, and they just received a hero's welcome wherever they went as they serve explored. The sips just cemetery on there in the wheelchair is everywhere. They turn they would get a rousing round of applause, the foot ceremony started. Or we were waiting for the president's to show up all the veterans got seated on stage and the crowd of ten thousand people stood up and gave them a four minute long standing ovation is is pretty special pretty special morning. And we did hear from several leaders, including President Trump. I'd like to play a piece of his speech to all of our friends. And partners. Our cherished alliance was forged in the heat of battle. Tested in the trials of war and prove it in the blessings of peace. Our bond is unbreakable. We heard from several world leaders who emphasized this theme throughout the week, but as you write in your piece for the Wall Street Journal, the alliance, that's being celebrated today is now facing new challenges. Well, first and foremost, Ray is a President Trump in, you know, he was elected on a wave of anti-establishment conservative populism. And for President Trump internationally that being a strong focus on, on trade, deficits and a strong focus on Bill, Terry spending. He does not want America to be spending money for countries that can afford their own military, and be that, that we had trade deficit with those are deeply intertwined in his mind and his politics. And he's been the first leader sits boil over to really in America to check. Challenge to really challenge some of these issues where these issues previous presidents have or other countries to increase the their, the percent of spending, they vote to defense, but President Trump has been the first one to push this first and foremost, then in international policy. And meanwhile that comes with some other nationalist movement, sort of sweeping through Europe. So there is some orient them here for for the president, but largely today, the president kinda played nice with mccrone with those kind of parts in Europe, he focused, his speech, almost exclusively on the ceremony and the veterans he met with the crown afterward for an official eating and, you know, he also talked about the relationship and how strong it was pretty good. Now, how strong it feels it is so definitely today he left the fighting for another day.

"And I was seriously a mccrone ass man was responsibilities. They have a problem, and I was like one of those. Get an episode in. My wife's asleep already. Did you know, I didn't do it? I was doing something wrong. Like, I'm gonna slip out and watch soda came up around. So in KM reads a book halfway through. I don't know. Yeah. There's just like we had Taylor there to kind of guide us through every. Yeah. Like the first eight oh seven episode. Be on this episode or two per season, basically porn too. Isn't it? There's a lot. There's a lot of creepy stuff going on. There's a whole it's somewhat. You're like, oh, I don't know. There's too much going on where like it was nice not to tell you what was going on. But like still if I'm gonna continue watching. I have no idea. What's going? I don't know. Why this character is important? I can't remember a single. Safer to you. It's only show news show. I'll watch other than my wife makes you watch. This is us. It's the most depressing show in the planet's back this season, right? Is this season Assads? The last episode is like literally they all end sad. And you're just like gosh. But you have to like you want to watch the next one to see what happens. Gosh, dang. Well. I'm kind of like now, I'm kind of like wondering what happens to these characters. I kind of want to know what have they also? Right. Everybody says. It says don't get attached. Because somebody's going to go. That's kind of what I like about the office to is like you don't have to watch that. So before right. Like, no what's going on. They're more like Seinfeld. Like, they'll have like a funny theme throughout each will. The Heat's problem is there's no way I have time in my life. No way to work before Halley, you stayed up watching. I did I've watched like four or five episodes in a row one o'clock in the morning. That's ridiculous, Jim, and I was super tired the next day. And I woke what are you doing? You got things to right people to talk to accomplish with your life. And there's no way I'm getting through. What is it six or seven seventy seasons? Yeah. How many episodes in season? So it's like a movie, right? Our long. Yeah. No. I can't believe people can actually do that. Like, they can just well, I can't make it through a whole one. Like, I get through happen. Then I falsely. I don't know why. I mean, I could see where you could sit and get stuck. I mean when we were waterpolo is that we would watch five and six episodes of the office. Oh, yes. Much another one. But that's like in between competing where your brain used a D someplace else, and you're you're there for reason off a little boat you snore. I do not nor I grind my teeth. That's that's fact, we were all in the living room. Everybody was watching this. Because I had patients Wideawake explaining and also I got the director of. I'm out. She was like tasty. You can't go to bed. You have to you have to tell us. What's going on and tastes like? Okay, whatever. And then it gets excited. She's wide awake. No. That's supposedly LA just like, no. Here pressured them, I felt guilty, and I'll do this because I just wanted to say say up and celebrate so I mean, I have my goblet of wine, and I appear pressure them into staying because I'm enjoying my golf is want friends to hang out with. So then as we start watching all of a sudden it hits me, I'm like onum so tired, and I was like you have to fight through couldn't even see what was on the screen house. Like, you're not falling asleep. You made them stay asleep. You passed out. No. I did not. Shoes. Did she closed the couch? Not I five seconds. Then the next. It was so crazy though because it was like Jabirjabir Jabber not islands knows exactly how I feel when I drive a car, and I will like you're fighting the sleep so hard, and I was fighting it. So you drive two hours a day. Yeah. And you fight that. Yes. Well, when you drive I if I'm not in motion. I'm tired sleep the drive unless it's totally. I can do. Dr better like if we're going to know somewhere. I'd rather leave late at night..

They just announced that Prince Charles will be there representing the Queen. Well, that's nice. So and they said that dignitaries from across the globe will be there. So as Macron coming to get out of his burning city. Well, they stopped the diverting because mccrone actually gave in apparently one of the biggest things they were protesting in France was especially in Paris was a new tax. They had put on fuel. They took it off. They they stopped the whole thing. They said, no, no, no, we're gonna get rid of that tax. Because that's what the prisons the state. We're getting taxed out of our city. We can't even afford to live here anymore. Don't buy it. Don't get fooled by that. Now, it's going to last couple of days. No, don't get fooled by the tax story to try to spin this into because this is all about it. I saw something amazing yesterday with the reaching out. There was a whole section of the protesters tried to get a hold of. Media to tell him. It's not about the tax. It's not about this. It's about unheralded on checked out of control immigration this destroying that city. And they said, no one will tell our story. That's what this is about. Of course, just like, you know, the Democrats want have our open borders. Look, what happened to Germany, just all all you. Gotta look at us. Look what happened to Jimmy let a million and a half immigrants in without any documentation. Just come on in. Now, they have tent cities everywhere. People are getting robbed left and right. The people who lived in Germany, originally, don't like any of the people that came in the people who came into being quarantined in these little tit areas. Anybody's immigrants. It's not fair to the residents terrible terrible idea. Just look at we should always remember and show this video forever. What's happening to Paris right now on fire, and they have to do and here's open borders. That's your this is what you're you're headed for writing right there. They don't get it. Now. Let him in that they keep pushing it pushing it just don't I don't. I don't understand it. You know? My parents came here from Italy. They went the legal way. A lot of people do go the legal way. We'll gladly have you part of our country. It's just that simple. But it's nice to see. Finally, they're not spending all day on George W my now, hey, speaking of immigrants here. This is pretty amazing to we talked about it earlier permanent legal US residents. They're on the way to basic training right now on buses as we speak bennigan's going to begin sitting backlog of green card holders to recruit training this week. It's suspends a policy the Trump administration ordered last year requiring stricter background checks for some immigrants who wanted to serve in the military. But they're going right now, they're going to basic training. Good for them. Pretty amazing. They wanna serve I think. That's great. I give him credit. I I don't know how anybody joins the military. I really don't I wouldn't make it through camp. Even when I was younger. Would you have made it through bootcamp get here in pretty good shape? Not at seventeen or eighteen probably. No, I think I would have made it through. But I don't know. Die welt. I don't have the mental. I really regret not serving though regret. I wish I did. You can go back. Now take old guys yet. They'll put you at a desk here. You can go sit over there. Yeah. Count this Hensel pusher. That'd be me. It. It's I look at the transformation of the guys and the women that more guys than girls, but that went to school with both of my children. And now they come back, and you know, they're lieutenants or some of them are captains, and they're all facets of the military. Whether it's the navy the army, the marines and the transformation of these kids that were literally a lot of them punks when they were in high school or now. Yes, ma'am. No, ma'am. Love it. They love the military. They said it was exactly what they needed. And it's nice to see the transformation. It's just nice to see that this many green card holders are are willing and able and they want to serve the US military. I think it's great. I think it's awesome. We should we should support them. I agree wholeheartedly. We also support this little two year old kid. We have we gotten in touch with chance hospital yet. Do we know because I know Karen was trying calls her out right now, we're going to push through this for the holidays because you know, there's a big viral push to help out this kid two years old they say visible. We can't confirm the say, she's originally from south Florida. And you know, when you got a sick family member. It doesn't matter where you get the treatment. That's where have you can. And they're being treated out of Orlando. She's only to the aggressive form of cancer is called neuroblastoma than many of you may be aware of Ed. She has what they're calling the rarest blood form blood type in the world. Yeah. They said out of a thousand donors, they could only find what they were three people that matched her blood type because it has and it was like four percent of people of Iranian Pakistani or Indian descent would match your blood on a Mike. "Well there was this moment where they're about to do a photo op the president they're all saying what a great relationship we have and they're actually correct where trump leans over to mccrone and starts like grooming hip vendor for we have to make them perfect he is perfect so it is really he says he is perfect as he's brushing off dust from macron's shoulder and so the worst he is perfect stuck with me all week because he's not perfect his approval rating in france his home country is like at around forty percent controversial figure yeah and like this this bromance between mccrone and trump it's also not perfect because after the state dinner with trump we saw mccrone address congress and basically without saying trump's name bash major tenants of trump's policy you know it was really interesting the other reason that i was thinking of the words he is perfect was because of the supreme court you know they are considering what to do with donald trump's travel ban and what struck me is that well one they're asking two questions does the president have the right to do this kind of thing in two is trump and doing this thing the way he did it is it discriminatory and so one of the things that they got caught up in with these arguments that took places week is whether comments trump made about muslims during the campaign can be used to say the ban it self is a discriminatory can't do the government's argument there with amazing actually i remember listening is like one of the arguments that they're making is before trump assumes office he was a private citizen and meet or want takes the oath and it'll change exactly and i'm like little but like the very reason for example that facebook and twitter would let him get away with saying things that otherwise would be deemed tate speech and violating terms at least for facebook is because he's not a public figure.
