"But really it was over the course of twenty years and that number continues to recede one was deal behind this effort in how is it failed? While I did again working on this list in in March, right which for a couple reasons one of which is that the current secretary of state David Whitley was appointed to that role in December last year. So in March two thousand eighteen it was his predecessor of Pablo's to his secretary state. So this is not like Whitley's just this this list or kind of just project is not Whitley's brainchild. Right. It came from. I think you know, the administration, and at you know, of course, they had this long running. Concerned about voter fraud and the integrity of our elections. And so on I would note that early March was also in the Texas primary was and you know, you have perhaps a it's interesting to sort of think through if Republicans who were thinking about facing surprisingly competitive twenty eighteen cycle. We're taking an extra particular interest in any kind of irregularities in voting records in order to sort of, you know, the take a restriction view of of of the franchise. But as you say, I mean, just seems completely bogus me. It doesn't even make sense. If the numbers it's like, it's like the the the numbers that are in error. I mean, how you find that? Because it's got to be more. So basically, I mean, sort of the reason why this kind of thing would happen is that if you're lawfully present in the country, then you can get a license to drive in Texas. And in fact, legal you're required to get a license to drive and Texas. Do you wanna drive in Texas you've got ninety days to do? So, you know, once you're resident in the state, he came from different state or different. Became candidate had a Canadian license. But so basically within the state, of course, in the past two years there have been far more than ninety eight thousand driver's licenses issued to like legal permanent residents green card holders. And so on and many of those people have since become naturalized when you're naturalized citizen. You can then vote, and you're not required to go back and get a new license. So I just like on the numbers of the state's population. Like like, we're twenty eight million people in Texas. I mean, it's there's of course, going to be. I mean to say that there's fifty eight thousand people who were non-citizens, and they got their license, but then subsequently voted about that's not even suspicious. And then of course, the the mistaken is littlest coming out like since the second. It was released. You know, there were apparently three hundred sixty six people who were flagged as as non-citizens into Clinton county like Waco, and literally every single one of them years. Well, over twenty years, I mean, so over twenty years how many site was the question three hundred sixty people during a sixty six right in in McLennan county. And yes, another question too is like I think that you're kind of doing this to see how many non how many people were non-citizens their license, and then subsequently voted the the number of people who are naturalized in state, and then voted would probably be higher than that. Right. So I'm not clearing with days only, gone to certain counties, if they've only looked at the most populous counties, the only looks at you know, counties with large share foreign born residents. But but weird number the number as initially presented by the secretary of state was not accurate, obviously. But it's also not clear why it was inaccurate the way it was. And also not clear why they would release it this week, you know, what they're doing. And of course, you know, even if this is just an innocent bungle of some sort or well intended bungle, you have the president now on Twitter a couple of days ago, saying the kinda heralding this report as though it's proof of widespread voter fraud in Texas, and that's actually comes.

So just be prepared for that. They don't want to standing around blocking the gate where you guys can line up. Has all the different zones. Don't you just get into the line zone? Yes. Supposed to do. And I don't know why they switched that consisting. Like, it's going to be a lot more complicated. And all you gotta do be more forceful when you get up there because there's nothing more embarrassing than when you get up there. And somebody says we're boarding zone. One zone six. Okay. If you're not zone wine. Please go back to your zone. Six has very embarrassed diamond member at delta. So I don't have those problems out the door. Now, they're hoping that this is going to help the planes, get loaded quicker and to minimize delays. But we'll see what happens. I right now. Let's discuss this opposite situation. This was at barely university. A former bailiff frat president has managed to sidestep a rape charges that were against him. Now, he has been accused of raping a female student, and he's going to serve no jail time. Any us does not have to register as a sex offender all because the judge did accept a plea agreement under which now he's going to he pleaded guilty. He pleaded no contest, which means you don't admit guilt. And you don't have to offer a defense. Either the women who of course is accusing him is outrage. And she wrote a letter she said he stole my body virginity and power over my body. She said, I not only have to live with his rape. And the repercussions of the rape. I have to live with the knowledge that the McLennan county Justice system is severely broken. She said I have to live with the fact that after all these years and everything I have suffered. No Justice was achieved. They did dismiss for counts of sexual assault against her against him. And the alleged victim's family that they were not confident enough to take the case to trial. She said he violently raped me multiple times choked me, and when I blacked out he dumped me face down on the ground and left me to die confident enough with it a lack of physical evidence. Like well. Now, what they were saying was that the prosecutor had a similar case that they lost. So they didn't feel confident that they would win this case they said the prosecutor recently lost a similar case, Mikey. They have evidence in this case a rape kit nine like what I mean. What was it? That sounds crazy. What are the evidence was? But we do know that he put in this deal pleaded no contest. And now he doesn't have to do any of those things. And of course, he's NPR aided by all of that. She said, Jacob Anderson, and are rapists who get away with their crimes will never be cured. Never change. If anything they will be emboldened by their power over women and their ability to escape Justice and punishment. So now, he's never going to testify. None of that. And this is the reason why rape victims hesitates to report crimes all the time because of situations like this. All right. Well, that is your front page news. All right now, when we come back exhibit will be joining us, of course, exhibit from the west coast exhibit from my ride the rapper the actor New Orleans, we'll be talking to exhibit. So don't move. Monday night CBS news update, I'm Matt piper. KCBS news time ten thirty two. Anthony onto is director of elections and surveys for CBS news. He and evening news anchor. Jeff Lord, discussed the latest polls ahead of next Tuesday's midterms. Every battleground state, we've been to every one of these candidates has gauged what their line is on the president all of this one way or the other is a referendum on him. Yeah. He's not on the ballot. Jeff, but he is on voters minds and across the battleground states, we see voters telling us. That they say see their vote as either in support of or in opposition to the president, and that could reach historic levels this year now typically in midterms voters say that the president is a factor, but we're seeing those levels now go up by double digits, and maybe fitting for divided country is just as many who say it's to support him than to oppose him in every state. We've been to here. He's talking all immigration immigration immigration. Democrats the focus is on healthcare. Yeah. Because in all the states that we've pulled voters are saying that they think the Democrats would protect preexisting conditions more so than they think the Republicans would do that by wide margins. So it's probably no accident that the Democrats are focusing on that that they're running it in all of their ads. You know, the question is whether they're going to be able to run against a good economy. Which is also something that's helping the Republicans. Yeah. That's the issue here. So economy versus direction the country is headed how what what what are you seeing in that? Yeah. A big split. You know, we see many people saying that the economy is good. But they're not all voting on that more people are. Voting on the direction of the country. And right now, the Democrats are trying to take advantage of that Anthony Salvato director of surveys for CBS, news and evening news anchor. Jeff glor- and with six days until the election. "Conservative groups are now pouring millions into the race and cruise is doubling down on his efforts to paint bet, does an extremist. He said that Betto is divisive and dangerous. He's called him a socialist and anti law enforcement. He's running a steady stream of attack ads to underscore those points. Once those. Wants to take our guns, not a chance on he'll get a bull from millions of ticks. Gonna run in Texas feel liberal man. I'm Ted Cruz and I approve this message cruise is shrewd tactician. He almost single-handedly shut down the government in twenty thirteen to try to defend ObamaCare, and he came very close to becoming his party's nominee for president as a forty five year old. First term US Senator. He knows how to draw blood, and he knows what will fire up his base, but there are core issues at stake here the place of immigrants in American society. The government's role in education and healthcare, and you can feel the deep divisions even at bettas rallies. Midway through the temple town hall. The one Brit Daniel opens, I noticed the guy standing off to the side. He's filming everything bet, though. Says on a tripod mounted smartphone. He's wearing a shirt with the slogan. I'm pro gun change my mind. Can you tell me what you're carrying? I've got a Taurus, judge public defender. It's a Forty-five long. Colts slash four, ten, like shotgun round. I live out in the country and so I- carry a four. Ten because if I come across rattlesnakes or or whatever. So if I don't plan on trial, then I just carry my little revolver with me. Well, it's not little. It's a pretty big revolver. CJ Grisham. I'm just a local resident here in temple. Also founder of a gun rights organization here in Texas. So I'm here to find out his views on gun rights. Great. Are you where do you usually politically probably more conservative libertarian that that vein a more of a classical liberal Thomas Jefferson, basically, government leave me alone and that's so wherever whoever's got the free policies. So. But you're, you're open to him somewhat. I mean, I will definitely has more free gun policy to bet did as well. Absolutely. And and obviously I'm mortgage towards Ted Cruz than I am to be too, but I also believe in listening and con- conversing and discussing issues. So that's why I'm here to listen to. If we only listen to the people we agree with, we can never grow that way. So you're more open to him than past democrat candidates in Texas? I, I wouldn't say that I like c. j. he's smart and open. He waits in line for half an hour to meet Beto like everyone else shakes his hand. Asked him about his policy positions on guns. CJ doesn't come away impressed. I would say probably ninety eight percent positive. I'm going to be voting protect Bruce. Yeah, and and I don't think coming to a rally like this is going to change my mind cause I'm not. I'm not a single issue candidate, but gun control is heavily on that scale. I'm just here to get answers. You know, respectfully. I don't want to cause any outbursts. Like some of the Democrats did at the Ted Cruz rally, but I just wanted to listen. I think we need more of that in society. People listening instead of talking so much like I am right now. The night before in Waco. I spent some time with the woman named Mary duty in some ways. She's CJ's office a lifelong bleeding heart liberal, but no one is going to confuse her for a snowflake. She's stout. No bullshit. The grandmother of seven, one of her sons served two tours in Iraq as a marine Mary's pretty much running the place. She's the head of the McLennan county, Democratic Party and after bet to finishes. She walks through the hall, greeting, everyone reminding them to turn out making sure all the concessions closed. We make our way to a small room at the back of the building. My name's Mary duty. I thought it was really forward at me. Touted by you veer ski teller. I'm fine. But I mean in general, mcclennan counties, Republican, Baylor University. They certainly I was making peace signs Baylor in nineteen seventy two during the Vietnam war. McLennan county is a red county. We have a huge number of people that just don't show up independence and Democrats what's this like compared to other statewide candidates, like Wendy Davis or Bill light, and we haven't seen anything..
