"34 in college park and 34 in Aldi add one 41 In the Russian movement in Ukraine there's been an attack today of special concern to NATO countries Russian missiles pounded a military training base in western Ukraine killing 35 people Joining us to talk about this is Politico defense reporter Paul mccleary Paul thanks for being with us Thank you Can you tell us about this base and why it's important to NATO Yeah this is based right up on the Polish border is where U.S. Canadian and British troops had been training the Ukrainian forces since late 2014 And it's become somewhat of a hub for a lot of the weapons to stinger missiles in the javelin anti tank missiles that the west has been sending into Ukraine to help the Ukrainians fight off the Russians The Russians had had said earlier in the week that they were going to start targeting some of these convoys And it looks like they went right after the site where a lot of this stuff is coming in Yes the Poland must be especially concerned about Russia's military activities moving closer to its border There are I mean the Russians are not known for their accuracy of fire especially with long-range munitions like this So if they keep hitting these airstrips and some of these bases and depots right up on the border there's a real danger that they could miss the missiles would head into Poland You have about 15,000 troops from the U.S. 82nd airborne a 101st other units who have gone into Poland over the past two months or so And they're close to the border there doing training with Polish forces So there is a lot of equipment There's a lot of U.S. Polish British troops there There's a lot of weaponry that's flowing into Ukraine So it has been peaceful until now but it could be a very very volatile area The Russians start pushing west up against that border What about the attack itself Who was killed was this Ukrainians fighting there or people just Manning this base or what I think most of the Ukrainian military is probably some the weapons that are going into Ukraine Ukrainians are coming across the border into Poland picking them up and then driving them into Ukraine So no NATO troops or westerners or NATO allies are heading into Ukraine So I would imagine there's truck drivers There's people doing logistics supply but it's mostly troops Ukrainians are still using the base as a kind of resupply point And a training point Okay Paul thank you very much Thank you That's Politico defense reporter Paul mccleary We'll check sports next It's one 43 Hi I'm Patrick Bengals owner a new look home design Sometimes it's nice to do half of something now on the other half later Like Queen and half the house now and then doing the other half later or shoveling hands the walk now and then the other half later While half now half later is cool You know what's really awesome At new look through March 31st when you buy a new roof you can pick for half the roof later and then the other half never What Pay for half the roof later and then the other half you'll never pay With our half later half never sail you save 50% on all roofing materials and you pay the other half later with interest refinancing Plus we give you line by line pricing so you see exactly what you're paying for.

So i loosen up my skates another. Like eight minutes goes by. I'm not playing so we're playing the clock game. We get sick of that. And i think like we cut it out at like five hundred bucks or something and i've i've won so i'm pretty pumped other than that. My eyes are burning. And i got spite so that says well. What do you wanna be when you get older. And i'm like. I don't know what are you talking about. "Perfect literally every time. No editing. I wonder how much editing they do all of the editing. Yeah that's basically all they do tries but that we can edit right. No editing me. At one target you might lose a limb. Don't worry about it. I have to know that okay. The target is five by five. And how high up five miles east five feet by five feet in your approximately. I'd say eighty five hundred feet up. That's myself plane. Have no way of winning throw shotput housing similar heavy enough it's round. It's kind of weird wind. I think it would fall fairly straight. I was thinking of non finger hold. bowling ball. Eighty five hundred feeder that a five by five. Pick a tub would be good sean. I'm gonna win shawn bradley out. Perfect somebody with somebody. One of those little wing suits or you throw controlled. People control airplanes yeah. I didn't specify the guy that comes into the rodeo. No the guy like perfectly during the national anthem comes down lands we have. I've been to one rodeo. Did easy one last question. Then we can wrap it up. It's been fun of said so far this the smoky question. Okay yeah you are. You're officially on the run. You did something you weren't supposed to. Obviously you get like getting like thirty minutes to prep yourself. You have to pick someone to be your getaway driver and it has to be a fictional character. Who would the fictional character be. Let's see for me erica. Pretty good things fair. Mine would jason stadium and the transfer series and happens. You start.

"Beers get a lou wear. We're gonna do some in a quarantined world. Experience the podcast. Nobody's been talking about storing no-one famous past present and boyd less streaming now grant ben mag back or starting with troy. I feel like he's got wants. He's not really because i did this week. So we're going to start with him trending up so this one is called aladdin question. You know obviously you know. Pique the interest of those disney fans veto. So you get a choice to either go into this little area and they're gonna shut the rock behind you kinda like aladdin. But he didn't have a choice. He had to go in there and try to find the magic lamp for jaffar. Chilin it right all right so you get the choice either going there or not. If you go in there and beat this challenge you get ten million dollars okay. It's a it's a certain course. You have to get through okay. The first step is you have to be a super. Mario brothers three level without dying pick. No it's anywhere between world three and five. Okay second you have to be a crash. Bandicoot level anywhere from worrell island two to four so it's not difficult. Actually i'm going to pick the mario one. It's the one where the sinus turns to fat. You so it's a toughie. No okay and third. I think come up with a third. You have to jump rope for ninety seconds. Double dutch style. Okay so you have to do all three of those if all three them yet to get to the gotland to get the ten million dollars so you're gonna ask me. What is my consequences. If i don't if i die in mario brothers band a coup or jump rose if you yeah if either of those you fail you. There's a consequence. So the i fail you lose a limb to pick the win yes and then you can try as many times as you want until all your limbs are gone so you get four shots added to get the ten million dollars. Are you going to go inside the cave and try to win the ten million dollars. How confident are you know. You lost zach at jump rope yeah. I'm jim roaming for ninety seconds. So i'm going to lose all limbs do you have though. I didn't say this millionaire acquitted anytime. There's a smaller cash price. Phone a friend. You get two days to prep for this. That's new to kinda entice you a consequences. Run through for two days and you have like you have like a mario ninja a bandicoot. Ninja jump rope. Ninja teaching you the ropes. Absolutely now. you're in. And i'll be honest because if i could phone a friend and have my wife lay crash bandicoot. I'd be in. But i. I just know i would lose without it so with the training i would be in. I feel like i do the best. That crash man me too. I think that's the because that's the only island. Two four power ups to get moreover. There's you're actually small. You go in against the sun. You have a chance. Though throughout the level get bigger. You've changed the practice at some levels brutal. You have two days to practice so you could literally just do that for two straight days. You'd still fail the job growth. You have to run at full speed the whole level or you sunny. It's coming at you and you have to jump over each ten mah jumping over the sun. I'm going to give it a go. Maybe once well do. I get to back out after the two days..

"I don't i don't like a robot balls and strikes. I i don't even like to strike something really. I'd just like to watch the game and figure out where the has his zone. And i'm just i don't need people saying oh definitely it wasn't. A striker wasn't ball because they saw it on the screen because fox meet some box that it's like an arbitrary square. It's not like an actual thing. So i don't i don't like i like the games to be faster though watching and it was like two hours tonight because Doubters dodgers won like three to nothing or something and they are. They getting any runs quick. And it's like this is awesome. This is the way to watch baseball. That's just what i'm worried with with. The younger population is their attention span. So short i mean it's one of those things where if i'm watching. Tv i gotta be on my phone. I gotta be on my computer for someone to go to a baseball game and sit there for three to four hours. I think that might be a lot for the younger population. I think that's where baseball might be in trouble in the future. Yeah i agree. I agree with the whole thing. We might get cancer in front of the tv to save his life to watch a game and he'll get excited for the first inning and then he's off doing whatever else he wants to do. In the greenwich young. But you really do see that But could you imagine watching fox and then they have an adaptable strike zone angel hernandez the empire strikes. It's like strikes owner what he's actually calling on. I think that's the thing about baseball like the people that really know the game really love the game. I mean each umpire. Like you said is different. You gotta feel out Party to know what i mean for. The most part on pires might not be the best. But they're consistent the you know the only give a little off the little off inside a little high little low. You just kinda know what's going to work that day and what the guy normally calls. As long as they're giving them the gloves pretty close knit throw pitch and they give it to them online. I if they missed if if it's technically in the robot zone but he missed a spot by like three feet all. That's fine with me. Yeah i agree. I heard there was a report that they're possibly going to talk about. Moving the rubber back foot. Did you guys hear that at all. What yeah. I don't know if that's gonna come to fruition or not but that'd be crazy i could see it. They made baseball's denser this year so they they travel like a couple of feet less on a hard hip all. But i could. I could see that they're trying to make the batter. I guess you gotta balance it out. But it's crazy so get carter capps. Who had a controversy the last couple years. Because when he pitches he he like jumps off the mountains like three feet towards the home plate to pitch and he gets like so much more velocity audit because of the distance. So it's interesting. You got a couple more things that i wanted to talk about about nineties baseball before we before we wrap up. Let's have a quick talked about the expos. We brought him up already. Because thing remember the expos and the crazy statement they played in kirby puckett sorry kirby puckett during a person for a guy that had the streak second baseman for the.

"A team that was in the same division just to piss them off and then they're not far and we ate the cardinals everyone. I let's talk about the cower in junior streak do you guys remember it. And is there a more overrated memorable thing in the world then the overrated. So i so so. I think it was tainted significantly by the game where he wasn't going play and then they canceled the game. Yeah like that. That to me ruin the entire streak and i don't remember it vividly just because i was so young at that point but i remember that specific that and just thinking like that's that's all they got to understand how they can pull that off but i don't think it's rated though because people are pansies now. They've hurt to play well. The thing is played the most. Nfl games real started like mannix. Thank god i wish more did. We just kept showing up so every time. It's kind of a side note here. But every time i play madden i'd his injury rating down to zero just to make sure he got hurt every time i hear them all right. When you got home runs a little race there mcgwire sosa that one of the first two thirds of the season forgotten. What runs where we'll use wasn't even palmero in that run or is that a different year where he was the three of them in griffey was lyndon for like the first half of the season and then until june or whenever associate twenty in one month recess dosing. Good this man got out on that one though. It like it's tough. I mean that was. That was a great time to watch baseball. Those young kid going in the backyard and trying to runs over the fencer going out with your friends and your impersonating all the stances. I mean that was a great time to so saw you hit one. You could do a couple of hops. That's what saved baseball actually is not being seen that much ratings..

I remember a can of coke and engineer this as two free tickets so we went to the white sox stadium and they to two tickets and we ended up watching in their ninety s and watching him and vendor your drive in the nineties us ninety nine. He started collecting social security. Took a buggy to the at the. I've got a couple of names left on my list. Ricky henderson who's technically he's ninety two thousand nine hundred years but a good chunk of his curves in the ninety s and about henderson kevin around debit justice he drew martinez and jim. Abbott is great. I just found his number one draft pick card. It's not worth anything but it's still cool to have one of the best years. I mean you got like paulo. Neil and just the gangs are so good martinez bernie williams andrew jones shoprite. He was ninety s or was he. I think he spilled into the two thousand two nine gold gloves in a row from like ninety seven to two thousand so chuck knob lock though that i just couldn't end up throwing from second to first until field that either. He was good for a long time gifts. I let's talk about our favorite jerseys from the ninety s. What do you guys got. Start with eric my favorite jersey's eighties beyond toge- all star is gonna be the expos expos gotta be the expos. I i definitely have cool colors. Red white and blue to don't exist anymore so it's cool and red white and blue for canadian team is just the way would he was. He a little in the nineties. Vitamer guerrero is. Yeah two thousand and one of my absolute favorites. His sons pretty good to the best ever seen anyone. Swinging more pitches were so far out of the strike zone gary bouncing he. I've seen him be hit a home run off the belts which i don't even know if that's legal trick shop. Maverick is number ten. For his t ball team on the marlins after gary sheffield for jerseys though i have the purple diamondbacks jersey from early two thousands. You have to go with the pinstripe yankees. Do i know a lot of yankees. But i mean it's historic it's classic. It's it's classy. Yeah you could wear that to a nice little dinner party. i half. I think i don't. They'd let you and if you're wearing tights. Starting nineteen ninety four nineteen ninety-five sale mergers by white. Ken griffey junior league rookie. Like when he was on a little big league it's like a little to blue-green to be able to be worn anymore but it was really cool time out of fashion edgar martinez over mentioned buehner. This why that written down. So let's talk about that team. How did the mariners not win a world series. Don't have no clue they've got junior..

One of the best doubles and the game went to saddleback went to saddleback college or mom went to a community college. Just play the game in the right way was always on a terrible team because he's on the cubs for so long and pitcher Yes took a lot of the good ones. But probably gonna go rod back. Just because because he was a covid at one point he was a giant. During batting practice he threw a ball up into the stands at the game. My dad went up and cotton and gave them to us. And you have signed and all that so rod back a place in my heart. But the best i've ever seen in my entire life. Second can i give like a one be absolute. John rocker technically to thousands. And and that will such a battle is then that should point in time is about three years ago. I said you know. I'm i i. I don't want this negative energy in my life. I mean just because you know this from you. Tell him in the story but it's very. It's distant the story rapid. We've got people listening who are business owners and they might be in this situation way this this inner conflict going on. I mean just to paint a picture but mccleary like what was it. Were they wanting to get more money from the customer. Or what exactly did that look like that. They didn't give as you said shit. And you did you. If you want to build a company that cares that is sometimes you just want to invest more money into humor Men's people developments you opponent developments and shareholder set that. That first of all. Don't want to let you run the company because it's your baby and don't don't believe don't have the same set of values as you do and give you the feeling of negative energy and you feel i don't explain you feel that your guts you see this rides and sometimes you have to say well goodbye. "That. They made this thing of showing the mentoring the people. And then they didn't do in most cases what they were mentored to do. They told oxygen you have to make the year number more exciting. It was not more exciting. And it also had a lot of prop clutter which I think it they don't need so I don't know if this was a mandate that they had from the production, we need to make this more exciting. Use props so. When they ended that and I went, they totally didn't make it more exciting. They're not GONNA win they're GONNA get judge down for that, and then Jefferson an age RENITA. Their whole thing is fast and energy and when they had their mentoring, they said, you have to make sure every second is super exciting and then then running up and downstairs what the heck are you doing there is no way that's going to be exciting. And do they not know when they were doing the mentoring that they were gonNA use this prop because that's what you WanNa say to them running up and down the stairs is going to take all the power out of your performance. Don't do it or find a way to do it. It's fun. Don't try to hoist her up on that thing it's. Going to look bad, this is what they needed to be mentored through. Why did they need to use that I almost feel like at some point somebody said, there's not enough excitement in these performances there's going to be an audience us this big prop, and at the last minute they had to figure out what to do. That's what it looked like to. And I just felt as soon as I saw that I thought they're not GONNA win. That's a but it was the effects. Were much much. It was similar. You know you still have the Enterprise in orbit around the planet or you had it was the the episodes. We've seen still really feel like the original series with just in different actors. I remember watching the first episode when I was like nine. I think but like you know back. Then you know you didn't know better with special facts because that's all we had it's like Oh that looks so cold but now with today's special effects and you go back and watch like Scott AC- The strings you know. I think to a point where when they beamed down to a planet they're actually going outside or not on a sound stage because there's just a different quality of light in different you know you can tell when they're on found states that are made up to look like a planet now. I think that adds something to it. Makes it more believable? At least to me. Yeah wired I think we're here? This wasn't that long ago. Might have been an article or something. I think they said in the original series with them they they you know they wrote in. They invented the transporter because said they wouldn't shuttle fly flight onto to a plan to many stats with the shuttle's installed. Yeah for some reason. Yeah yes it was cheaper just beaming down. I don't know I we took shutdown your shuttle you know because the beaming technology is problematic. Well Yeah I mean. That's I mean many people pointing this out including Charlie breaks you down in the energy and so it's like are they killing you each time and then it's double of you down on the planet. Yeah have you seen the chaos on the bridge documentary now? net flicks I think it's it's it's It's not it's it's you gotta you gotTa. It is on Youtube. But it's one of those things on youtube where to get around the copyright. You have to watch it like in a box with the with a picture behind it so if you can kinda get past. The Gate is not like a visually stunning thing. And it's only about an hour long anyway but it's interesting because it was put together by William Shatner about the kind of rocky road that the beginning seasons of a next generation had but it's interesting this so chaos on the bridge all right. I'll have to check out from a bridge. Yeah and I don't know when it starts but did you guys see that there's going to be like behind the scenes. I think it's eight episodes documentary on the making of the man. The laurean eight episodes for episode. I guess I don't know I'm looking at. I'm working on that Disney plus. I don't see the so might not be happy. I duNno was happy as behind the scenes thing unless they just did that. Because you know corona and stuff but I don't middle rain season becoming eventually but I don't know how much had filmed maybe an episode each episode season. What yeah okay. What about our star Trek podcast Star Trek Stars? Hey are worse the fifth you. Oh Yeah Oh yeah. This'll be two weeks later. But Yeah we're recording on Cinco. "Son or daughter about this say, look, you don't have a choice. There's we don't have anymore argument. It's just a legal. So you can't do this anymore. And if we can get these kids to stop at this early age, we say so many thousands of lives. So I'm I'm happy about this. I said treating I've been working on this for six years. So it's good to forward. A lot of the negotiations in in Libya right now are centering around the budget your budget proposed significant state spending increases twenty one percent in taxes to pay for it for, you know, saving the orcas and things of that nature. Even with the Democrats in control. They they seem to have only given you a bit of a fraction of what you would ask for how do you respond to that? Well, look at this is not even halftime yet. Everyone is put an idea into the pool and they're in the section, and they're all working on it to resolve the conflict between these budgets. What we've done, and I hope that ultimately, we do which is to fulfill the obligation to our kids education. This is the biggest driving force of this budget is four billion dollars. That was kind of the second installment of the mccleary decision, which we owe our kids education, and that's the big driving force. Now, there are others the need to finance a mental health. We know we have a big challenge to give people adequate mental health. We're in a court order to provide literally billions of dollars relief to improve culverts. So they don't block salmon streams these are court orders, the emergent concern about the orcas is is one that's compelling to many if not all people in the state of Washington. So reality is driving these budgets, not the governor. In reality means that we have to find a way to pay these bills. And I'm hopeful it will find a way to do that. This is this is what democracy looks like which is great struggle much gnashing of teeth. And then at the end, hopefully, agree budget, hope that'll happen. Now. Of course, we couldn't let him go without asking about the state spending money on his security while he campaigns for president. Why climate change cost the U.S. $160 billion last year

"Support for climate cast comes from Bank of America as one of the largest global financial institutions Bank of America is in a unique position to help society. Transition to a low-carbon economy Bank of America NA member FDIC. One hundred sixty billion dollars with a B. I'm NPR chief meteorologist, Paul Kutner. This is climate cats. The catastrophic extreme weather loss numbers for twenty eighteen Iran are supercharged atmosphere dealt the US one hundred sixty billion in losses last year, and the world's biggest insurers say climate change is costing us billions Arendse Ralph is head of the climate group at Munich reinsurance. I spoke with him from eunuch. It's a risk taker we need to understand risk and all analysis clearly shows that with a related drive us play a significant role when it comes to these losses in these events be dishes drivers as well social economic factors as we will define them. That's an increase in wealth in values at at the ground. But increasing temperatures in combination with increasing drought patterns that makes up for a stroll recipe that climate change already debuts. To take years of losses in twenty seventeen and twenty eighteen fires in California. Why do big insurers like Munich Re or Swiss Re have their own in house climate change experts. Eighty ninety percent of insured losses for metro catastrophes worldwide are from weather related events. And because this is the fact or so we have to have a closer look at these catastrophes whether lated catastrophes and in order to analyze and also form I signed typic- perspective and also all to cooperate we scientific organizations which support us in our analysis. We need to have specially metro scientists with a background in meteorology or China toiletry. What trends will you be watching closely in the next ten years, we expect that adaptation actually to feed changing climate conditions. Will be key in all the to slow down the trains towards ever increasing losses from whether they events and maybe in the future to reverse this trend and see reduction long-term reduction of of losses adaptation, and that can be anything from building codes too, many in management downswing be Deke and sarong and of the climate group at Munich reinsurance. Thanks so much for sharing your nail asus. And insight today you like compulsive very much. I'm Jay mccleary. I live in redwing Minnesota, and I do care about the environment. Back in two thousand and twelve my wife, and I went to an open house and red wing, and it was a home that had put in an installation for solar energy. And we were thinking about it for our house. Well, as I was there, and as I was talking to some of the people that had installed, it kind of all of a sudden clicked in my mind that wait a minute. This isn't just a household thing. This is a commercial side of this. And I knew the buildings of the having pretty well in a few ahead my mind and thought these could be good candidates. So we met and it was a good idea right from the start. And when it was all said and done between two thousand twelve and two thousand fourteen the city redwing ended up putting in six solar systems, and we were able then to get this all done with very very minimal cost to the city at any point in time. It's still working very well today, and I no longer work for the city, I've retired. But I still got a little icon on my cell phone that I can look every day and see just how much energy's being produced by those panels. And so it's it was great experience. The city of red wing has been a community for a long long time that understand that environments important. We've got our bluffs. We've got the river right there in red wing, and the people that live there have always at least from my experience understood that that's a huge part of our responsibility to enjoy it. But also respect it and try to do the best that we can to help preserve it into the future. I think people are understanding that the environment is changing that the things that we do can affect that greatly. And I think they want to be part of that solution. That's climate counts this week with thanks to climate generation. I'm NPR chief meteorologist, Paul hunter.
